Transcript
- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonigal.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: Tristan, it is the off season, my friend.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: It is, but it's also Fiesta season.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: So I am uh celebrating our San Antonio roots with a glass of ranch water with some Texas sodal in there, with some big swig sparkling water instead.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: And I'm just enjoying life, man.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: It's it's a good the summer is here.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: We're getting wet in the water.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: That's uh good phrasing.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: And uh just uh here we are in the off season, man.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: This is where we're gonna have to like really stretch our creative minds.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: So welcome ever, everybody.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: I can't wait to go jump in the pool and just get wet in the water, my friend.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: I'm doing high brain stuff on this episode.
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: Well, you guys knew this coming in.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: You knew that you're losing brain cells by listening to us, but it is officially the offseason, so get ready to lose even more of those brain cells.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: But if you do follow us on Twitter, we kind of outline what our plan is for the offseason.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: Um, it's kind of eight, we're going eight straight weeks here, breaking down a lot of tech football stuff.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: We're gonna go by positions.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: So we're gonna start with quarterback this episode, go down running back, uh, wide receiver, tight end, offensive line, defensive backs, linebackers, defensive line, and then ending off with special teams.
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: And that's gonna kind of break down our next eight weeks on this talk on Talking Tech Pod.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: So uh man, we're excited to get the most famous position in football started off in this episode, but we are gonna get to that here later.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: We had a couple things that we wanted to touch on beforehand, just some basketball stuff, uh, especially with one wit on this past week on the Twitter sphere with our good pal uh college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman was giving us a ton of crap.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, giving well, and we gave him crap.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: He responded with giving us crap.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: So uh basically, if you don't know Jeff Goodman, he works for uh what is it?
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: The athletic, yeah, stadium.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: He's not even the athletic.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: He's he works with stadium, he's a college basketball insider analyst who uh uh let's just say has a has a firm love for a former Texas Tech basketball coach.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: Um, and basically uh we just started crap with him, and he doesn't he hasn't really reported on news that has happened with Texas Tech in terms of uh players that are transferring to tech, basically any of the good stuff, he's not really reporting it, but then as soon as Chris Beard does something, he reports it, you know, and says Texas is gonna be a top five school going into next season.
- 3:23SPEAKER_05: Um so as we do as Texas Tech fans, we respond and we get upset and we get mad at Jeff Goodman, and uh it was just a whole thing this weekend, man.
- 3:35SPEAKER_04: It was so crazy that we entered his he has a list of power ranking of craziest fans online.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: So obviously, he just gave us a badge of honor and you didn't even know it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: So we we we take pride in being those kinds of fans.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: It was it was quite the spectacle, but I'll I'll I was with you for the most part.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: I was like, y'all, you're just feeding the alligator, and he's just gonna keep chomping.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: So I'm surprised, I'm really surprised that he kept going for it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: I really thought since he's just this journalist, you know, he's a blue check mark, that he'll still just digging in, like just he wanted to antagonize us more and more and more.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: I guess that gets maybe him and his website more attention, but I was just surprised to see that have a uh a sports journalist like that.
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: That's how he's made his living.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, as as uh uh a guy who's followed Jeff Goodman for a good while now, he loves when fan bases get pissed off at him and he loves interacting with the people that are upset at his takes and everything like that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: He will go back and forth no matter who you are if you disagree with him.
- 4:37SPEAKER_05: So, my advice to you tech fans is to not really give Jeff Goodman the time of day.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: He is uh he loves when other fan bases get mad at him and he will stick to his guns and you know, power to him, whatever.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: Uh, we love what Mark Adams is building at Texas Tech.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: Whatever Jeff Goodman says, it does not matter to me, uh, because it doesn't really matter.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, that's all I'll say on it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: I was, you know, everybody was getting pissed off at it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: We just kind of kept out of it for the most part.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: We did one tweet, and it was just like, hey, uh, don't give them the time of day.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: The good news is these these uh hot takes journalist guys, they're not our coaches and they're not our players, guys.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: So it's it will not reflect on our coach what they say about us, and plus we're looking at way too early rankings and stuff.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: So we all know the classic line when a season starts is preseason rankings are BS.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: So don't even worry about it, y'all.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: If you're just having fun with it, great.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: But other than that, don't take it too seriously.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, honestly, just don't.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: He's uh I mean, follow it, and people have been getting mad at Rostin too.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: I actually still like John Rostin.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: I think he actually is legit and and actually thinks about everybody and doesn't have doesn't play favorites.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: Jeff Goodman clearly plays favorites.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: I think Rostin has just missed on a couple of our transfer news.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: I don't think he's out to like get us or anything like that.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm with you too, because as soon as we announced that uh Adams was our head coach, he had him on his podcast, like uh within the next couple days.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I really don't think he's he's out to get tech at all either.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: He he really does seem like a true neutral, he doesn't seem to play favorites, and I I really like that.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: And it's just he's gonna have to report on UT too, it's just his job.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: So that's a that's a I'm not gonna take it too seriously.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: Rosteen is a dude who just loves college basketball.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, I've never seen a guy love college basketball more than this dude loves college basketball.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: My man was put on this planet during this timeline to do so, like that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: His existence literally doesn't have a place in all of human civilization until now.
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: Like, I can't see him doing literally anything else with his life.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: I've never seen a man so obsessed with one sport.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: I I can't wait for game seven of the NBA finals, and John Rostin's gonna report that uh Robert Morris is going to play UTEP in a non-conference game and be extremely happy that he's reporting at that time, at that moment.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: It's great.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: I love I love his passion.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: I don't have a problem with Rothstein either.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: It's just obvious, but obviously, Jeff is just out to antagonize people.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's just one of those guys, he's just one of those hot tech journalists.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: So moving on, we have uh scheduling news for Texas Tech basketball as well.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: The uh the matchups for the Big 12 SEC challenge just came out today, in fact.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: And Texas Tech got a good pull.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: We got Mississippi State coming to Lubbock on, I believe it's late January.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: I didn't get the actual date.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: I think it's like the 29th of January, something like that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_05: Um, but a yearly challenge that the Big 12 and SEC has done.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, we've had some really good matchups in the past, really good games.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: I think we're five and three overall in this challenge.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: So uh big pull with Mississippi State.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: They're actually going to be a pretty decent team this year, despite some of the past years.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, well, and and Mississippi State's been in and out of the tournament, you know, the past few years.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: But um, the thing with this team is they have they've been very, very active in the transfer portal, just like we have, but they've gotten some big time dudes as well.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: Garrison Brooks coming from North Carolina, transferring to Mississippi State, Rocket Watts, who was a starter the past few years, with Michigan State coming over, and then DJ Jeffries from Memphis also coming over, a good young player.
- 8:18SPEAKER_05: So Mississippi State is gonna be rock solid next season.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: That makes SEC team number two on the all out of conference list there.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: So uh the Adams family is not afraid of the challenge.
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: I like to see that.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm looking forward to it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: And I think all of Lubbock, Texas, is like, yo, is Mike Leach gonna buy a plane ticket?
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: That would be great.
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: If Mike would be awesome, if Mike Leach shows up at the game, it would be unbelievable, dude.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: And I mean, I I would be hyped to see him at the game, and I and he would most definitely get a standing oh.
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: That's what I was about to say.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: Ask you'd think he would get a standing ovation, and I think he would.
- 8:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude, no way.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: Everybody loves him here still.
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, the whole you know, pirate curse, you know, whatever you could talk about.
- 9:04SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're not big believers of the pirate curse on this podcast.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm not gonna say it doesn't make sense, and I'm I'm gonna, you know, blame somebody for believing in said curse, but I would like to see Michael Leach back in Lubbock.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: He brought us some great times.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's one of the most beloved college football coaches that we've had here at the university, and uh just a stupid falling out shouldn't change that, you know.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, and I just want to see the reaction, like what we get, like the footage we get out of him being in Lubbock again for something like that.
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: I think it would just be really funny, but uh that that'd be cool.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: And it sounds like a fun matchup.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: And uh we've done really well in the SEC Big 12 challenge, so we got to carry our way for the conference and obviously make some big news for uh our new coaching staff.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: We gotta show guys like Jeff that we are the real deal.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: You know, this this isn't a coach Beard team, this is a Texas tech team, you know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: Well, and it's and it's good because you brought this up earlier.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: But this non-conference schedule is shaving up to be the best we've had even when Beard was here.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, we're uh so far we have Gonzaga, who is going to be a projected top five team, probably top two team in the league.
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: Always good, Mississippi State now, Providence, and then Tennessee as well.
- 10:18SPEAKER_05: That we haven't actually said on this podcast.
- 10:20SPEAKER_05: If you didn't get the news, we are playing Tennessee in a non-conference game this season.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: They just came off a great year, they are always solid in basketball, especially the last few years.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: So playing these names is just so big for us because these games are gonna be nationally televised.
- 10:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, the primetime slot, especially for these non-conference games, you know.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're getting tested.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: We're we're not backing down.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: This uh coach Adams isn't acting like this is uh we gotta, you know, make sure our young guys or new guys play against lesser competition to get warmed up and all that.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: No, no, he's throwing our guys into the frying pan, and I love that.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: I think that just shows the attitude the locker room has, what the coaching staff has, that they're ready for it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: That this isn't a joke, that this isn't just a a soft landing from a fallout, that this is just business as usual.
- 11:10SPEAKER_05: You can't you can't be afraid of playing a Gonzaga, man.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: You just can't.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: You you should want that challenge, and I think this team, Mark Adams, all these guys on the roster want that challenge to play what is going to be probably the number one team at the time.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, Gonzaga's coming in with uh it arguably the best recruiting class, maybe of all time.
- 11:29SPEAKER_05: I think they have like three or four of the top 15 or 20 guys coming into this year's roster.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: True Timmy is coming back.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, they just have a really loaded team, uh, as they do every year.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: It's Gonzaga.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, they haven't seen a Mark Adams defense, though.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: It's true, it's true.
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: And we are one and oh against Gonzaga in the last five years, might I add, in the NCAA tournament.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: So uh let's make it two and oh, baby.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think this uh pod is a big fan of granny uh grandpa uh Adams or our West Texas granddad.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, man.
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: If you're not a fan of Mark Adams, stop listening right now.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: So, but let's move on to the meat of this episode and what the meat of the next few episodes is gonna be, which we are talking tech football off season, getting prepared.
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: So, throughout the next few weeks, we are going to do two different segments for each episode based on the positional groups in uh football.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: So, we're gonna break down our roster, our guys at their specific position versus the Big 12.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: So, today we're gonna talk about Big 12 quarterbacks plus our quarterback, and then our next segment, we're gonna break down the top five Texas Tech all-timers at each position.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: So, in this episode, we will talk about the top five Texas Tech quarterbacks of all time, which was very, very hard to come up with, by the way.
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: I felt like I was studying for a final, it was so hard.
- 13:02SPEAKER_05: I don't know, like I didn't think it was gonna be that difficult, but going through down the research, you're just like, where do I put at that four and five?
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: I don't have any idea.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: No, it but what's really cool about this exercise is I get to look into archives of Texas tech that I've never seen before.
- 13:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, I mean, I mean, we're young men, we're only 25.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: We only know what's with what we've really seen, so it's really cool like digging through these black and white images and seeing some of the stars of the past, you know.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: We didn't get to a power five top Texas program yesterday, you know.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: It it took a lot of guys before us to make it happen, so it's really cool looking at all these awesome dudes for sure.
- 13:41SPEAKER_05: And so we're gonna try to give our best top five.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: Uh I like Tristan mentioned, we are on the younger side of things, so we weren't there for a lot of these guys.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: So we're just kind of basing what we can off stats, articles, all that kind of stuff.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: So uh general perception.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: Roast us if you want to.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: Well, that's fine, we can take it.
- 14:00SPEAKER_05: But I think most of us will have a consensus top three when it comes to it.
- 14:04SPEAKER_05: But we're gonna get to that after we talk about Tyler Shuck and the incoming Big 12 quarterback.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: So let's get into that, dude.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, Tyler Shuck, man, is going to be the presumed starting quarterback at Texas Tech.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: Still a little debate on that, I guess, maybe, but it seems like most Texas Tech fans have come to a decision that Tyler Shuck is gonna be the guy.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: I'm pretty sure like every media outlet outlet that's like remotely close to Texas Tech is saying he's the guy.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: So uh like like we just spoke about last week that uh Doug Campbell's Texas football put him at Texas preseason number one quarterback in the state.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: So if if those guys think he's starting, I'm I feel really good about starting.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: And if those guys think he's gonna be number one in the entire state, a state known for good quarterback play, I think we feel pretty good about going into the segment.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: So let's let's get it started.
- 14:58SPEAKER_05: I kind of broke this down in tiers of the Big 12 quarterbacks.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: So uh it's not fair to put Tyler Shuck.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: I I think he's going to have a really good season.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: This is uh, you know, I think he is a really good quarterback.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: I think he had a really weird situation last season with Oregon, and he still performed.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: So, you know, he may not have been as elite as he could have been last season with Oregon, and it got progressively worse as the season went on.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: Kind of a mental battle there, uh, with always having his backup quarterback kind of inching to take that starting spot, and the coaches not really believing him fully.
- 15:33SPEAKER_05: So I'm gonna put him in my tier two, but my tier one and everybody's tier one clearly is gonna be Spencer Rattler and Brock Purdy.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, they those two guys are the top dogs coming in, the top returners, Heisman favorites, uh, you know, really good teams as well.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, Tristan, go ahead with what you have to say about Rattler and Purdy.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: No, zero argument there.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Uh the tier one is it if that's that's an easy staple to right there.
- 16:01SPEAKER_04: Those are the two favorites to be in the Big 12 championship.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: Those two are gonna be looking at playoff spots, maybe.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: So uh no argument there.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: Um, what I was just about to ask you as we start comparing Shuck to everybody else is you know, like like Spencer Rattler, he's got NFL hopes.
- 16:17SPEAKER_04: Um, do you think Shuck is trying to just pound it for one season?
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: He's only a sophomore.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: Do you think he's trying to build up NFL stock right now in the season?
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: Well, obviously is he is, but do you think he's going in with a mindset that he's gonna do this one season with Texas Tech and then enter the the uh NFL draft?
- 16:36SPEAKER_05: I think he's a guy that's gonna play it by ear.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: I don't think he's coming in right here and saying a one and done and that's it.
- 16:43SPEAKER_05: I think he's gonna see how the season goes.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: You know, he's coming in into the program at the at a good time.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: He's still got to play spring ball, he got to participate in some of that.
- 16:52SPEAKER_05: He's got all of summer to train with the team, and then he's gonna see how the season goes.
- 16:55SPEAKER_05: Obviously, if we don't have a good season, you know, he's not gonna have a lot of a lot of hope going into the NFL draft, being one of the top guys.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: But if he does have all this hype going into the year, Texas Tech has an unbelievable year, something you know, ridiculous, 9-10 wins or something that we're not expecting.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: I I this is all hypothetical.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: I'm not predicting.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: I like that hypothetical.
- 17:14SPEAKER_05: I do too.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: But but I will say Tyler Shuck's gonna play by year.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: He's not gonna just he's not gonna say, listen, I'm here for one year and then I'm out no matter what.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: I he's gonna he's gonna say, Hey, I'm gonna give him my all, you know, I'm gonna try to perform in a in a sunny cumby system as well as I can.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: And if Texas Tech performs and I'm getting love, then yeah, I don't blame him for going to the draft.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: But that's that's way far in the future.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: It's so hard to predict right now because it's such an unknown, to be honest.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I just the reason why I ask is the first guy that comes to mind whenever we're talking about a guy like this is Mac McClung.
- 17:48SPEAKER_04: Is you know, Mac McClung, I think, really did come in with NBA aspirations out of the gate.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: So um, and he looks like he's gonna be giving his best here.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: He has got lots of G League looks and all that, right?
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: So, but uh we're not talking about basketball right now.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh uh so I'm glad to hear that your take is he's just gonna play it by ear because obviously I'd like to keep a sophomore longer than one year.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: And I mean, if we're you know, if if we're hoping we want him to stay as long as he can and be, you know, an all-time great Texas Tech quarterback, you know, but all these guys have NFL dreams and you need to chase them.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: We're we're looking at that with Terrence Shannon right now, which by the way, I think is like about 95 to 5% chance he goes and stays in the NBA draft.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: Uh just with him going into the combine and everything, it's it's it's looking like he's he's gonna be gone, which is fine.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Good luck, TJ.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: But back to Tyler Shuck, he is such a good and solid player.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: He has so many different skills.
- 18:49SPEAKER_05: He can run the ball, he can throw the ball a bunch.
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, he can throw it long, he can throw quick passes short up the middle.
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: Um, what I like to see was when Oregon was winning a lot last season, and last year was a wacky year.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: Like we can't.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: Especially in the pack, especially in the pack, they played what, seven games or something.
- 19:05SPEAKER_05: They were the last to agree to play.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: It was kind of it was so rushed, everything like that.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: But when Oregon was winning at the beginning of the year, um, they they ran a style of offense under their OC that really involved the running backs as well.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: And Shuck thrived in that.
- 19:23SPEAKER_05: So, with what Wells has been trying to do at Texas Tech is really get a balanced offense.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: You know, it's not so much air raid, throw the ball a million times a game, it's getting guys like Sir Roderick Thompson, uh, guys like Taj Brooks involved in the offense throughout the the style and the pace to set the pace of the game.
- 19:43SPEAKER_05: And that's where I think Tyler Shuck thrives.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: And so I think if we have the running backs to do it, and I think Matt Wells wants to still run that style of offense just because he has Sonny Cumbie coming in here doesn't mean we're gonna be throwing the ball a million times a game, going back to what we were in the 2000s, you know what I'm saying?
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, TCU, these if you've been watching TCU these past few seasons and you have to, we play them, they don't throw it a million times, so that's that's not that's not their game plan.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: So um, but I do think we're gonna be seeing more deep passing this season than last season.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: I think uh you know, Matt Wells keeps alluding to, you know, obviously the every what everybody keeps asking when it brings Cumby on is are we going back to air raid?
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: And what his o his response is always we're going to become more air raid like, but we're not gonna lean into it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: So, but I think Sudden Gumby's a smart guy, and I think he's he knows that these running backs are awesome.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: So I think he's gonna use his weapons.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: I think you're you're you're you're pretty on with your with your take about what the offseason's uh the offseason, the offense is gonna look like.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: So I I I hope we could put him in that situation where he does do these things you're talking about.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: And just running through some stats from his last season in Oregon.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: I know we keep saying he didn't have a great year, he still had a pretty solid year in terms of pac-12 quarterbacks.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: He was second in the Pac-12 in passing yards in 2020, he was second in pac-12 in touchdowns, he was first in QB rating amongst Pac-12 quarterbacks.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: Oregon won the Pac-12 with Tyler Shuck at the quarterback position.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: So this dude has proven that he can be a winner.
- 21:20SPEAKER_05: So it's it's not really a matter of can he produce, it's just a matter of is this the right system for him?
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: Can he get him the other guys involved in right?
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: Can the O-line protect him for long enough to throw the ball?
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: So a lot of factors are gonna remain uh with Tyler Shuck going into this year.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: Look, I mean, Tyler Shuck was a darling in the transfer portal.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: So Matt Wells probably sold him a situation that he really believes in, which is great.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: That makes me feel really good about what we're gonna be looking at with the off with the offense.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: So um I I I do feel good about this.
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: You know, I were talking about this before the pod.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: We hope this is more.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: More of a coaching not believing in the player than the player just not having the right stuff.
- 22:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: I I just it was a mental game that Tyler Shook was battling, along with having to compete on the field with Oregon.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: They were kind of, you know, he was having to live up to a lot of hype.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: A lot of people were, you know, really hyping him up as the Justin Herbert successor, going to be the next guy at Oregon.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: And that's a lot to live up to.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: And especially without a spring training, having to be rushed into a football season that you weren't prepared to play.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: A lot of factors went into that.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: So uh kind of back to the Big 12, though.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: I want to talk about this because Rattler and Purdy are clearly the top tier of quarterbacks returning.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: They're getting Heisman favorites, everything that we just said.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: But what I will put in tier two is Tyler Shuck, along with Oklahoma State Spencer Sanders and Skylar Thompson of Kansas State.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: Before he got hurt last season, Skylar Thompson was playing great, had an awesome season, was uh doing well, and he actually got hurt in the Texas Tech game last year.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: But I would put those three in the next tier of quarterbacks for the Big 12.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: I agree with that.
- 23:09SPEAKER_04: And one thing you know about Kansas State is they're gonna be at least decent at literally everything.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: So uh that that's a good comparison.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: And what I like about that group is Tyler could absolutely be the best of those two, so out of those two.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: So um, I I feel really great about that kind of company he's in.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: Oklahoma State had a good season last year.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: Obviously, they fell short a little bit of their expectations, but I mean my Mike Gundy's put together great teams, and he obviously has to have a good quarterback to do so.
- 23:37SPEAKER_04: Um, and who knows what K-State's gonna look like this year, but I like I like these comparisons, and what I I think we'd be happy with tier two, but I but I'm hoping and thinking that's his floor because I think this guy can really break out, and so does the NFL scouts.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: They all think that this guy could be a top QB prospect in this in this upcoming draft.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, or or next upcoming draft, you know, y'all know what I mean.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: Um, so there's a lot riding on him.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: He has a whole coaching staff riding on him.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: Um, so and I I like the recruiting momentum we have, and I'm really hoping that this guy's kind of set up to be the guy before Baron Morton.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: So I I I like these comparisons, and I do think they're realistic as well.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: And then uh, you know, the other Big 12 quarterbacks, I'm gonna put in tier three, right below the Shuck Thompson Sanders uh little squad up there.
- 24:37SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna put Max Duggan and uh uh Jarrett Dagey from West Virginia.
- 24:43SPEAKER_05: Worst Daggy.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: Worst Daggy by far.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: But uh these two guys, I mean, Duggan's kind of a one-trick pony.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: He runs the ball a lot and he can't really throw he's pretty good at it, yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: And he's good at it.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, TCU is solid.
- 24:56SPEAKER_05: They're they're probably gonna be solid.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: Duggan had some great games, he had some multiple three, four rushing touchdown games last season, so that's just the style quarterback that he is, and that's what we're seeing more of in terms of like Lamar Jackson, guys.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Quarterbacks that could just take off and run.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: And Sam Ellinger was the same kind of way with UT last year.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: So uh him and Dagey, though, uh Dage was just not great last season.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: He he showed some flashes and he's still young.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: It looks like West Virginia is gonna roll with him.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, I we could very much see a quarterback change midseason with that.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, but that was kind of the tier three that I put in terms of Big 12 quarterbacks, is Duggan and Dagey.
- 25:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I I I agree with all your tiers you're breaking down here.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: And then after that, it's a huge question mark because we just flat out don't know who the quarterback's gonna be, what they're gonna look like.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: Um, so that this this is good.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: I like I'm I'm comfortable with committing to second tier in the Big 12.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: And this is this is the Big 12, y'all.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is the typically a very quarterback-oriented conference.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: There have been some amazing names coming through it, and I hope that Tyler Shuck is part of that prestige history and all that, but more importantly, I hope he gets us back to what Texas Tech is known for for elite quarterback play and just elite quarterback to wide receiver chemistry.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: So those unknowns that you did mention are UT and Baylor.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: We don't, I mean, there's a there's a QB battle, kinda I and well, okay, yeah.
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: Kansas is I put Kansas in tier five.
- 26:32SPEAKER_05: Tier uh dear, dear below the unknowns, tier, dear god, tier.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: Oh, yikes.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Uh the yikes tier is Kansas, and right above that is the unknowns, which are UT is gonna either put out Casey Thompson or Hudson card, not sure yet.
- 26:49SPEAKER_05: Probably gonna be Thompson.
- 26:50SPEAKER_05: I think he's the favorite right now.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then Baylor's either between Bahannon or Xeno.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, a lot of people like Zeno within the Baylor Faithful, but Bahannon's experience.
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: So we'll see how that ends up.
- 27:02SPEAKER_05: We can't really give a lot of analysis since none of these guys have really played before.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: So uh they could very well enter the tier one, two, or three.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: We don't know.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Hey, don't worry.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: Once uh UT beats a G5 team, uh the media will be saying he's the return of McCoy, whoever it is.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: So yeah, McCoy, the next Ellinger.
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, geez.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: But yeah, man, I think I think that's a good little tier list.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: We're gonna try to do that with uh the incoming in in the next coming weeks, you know, with the running backs and the receivers and all the other positions as well.
- 27:33SPEAKER_05: But uh Tyler Shuck, man, this it's gonna be exciting.
- 27:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm high on Tyler Shuck.
- 27:38SPEAKER_05: I actually think he's gonna be really good next season.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, me too, man.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: Fine my final thoughts on it is I think we have a lot of secret, sneaky sauce brewing in uh the Texas Tech locker room.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: And the thing is, is he's the injector.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: If he isn't good, I don't know if the secret sauce does what it's made to do.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Because I think the steak the secret sauce is made to surprise, and if he's not there to deliver said sauce, I don't think the surprise gets to happen.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: My my dad fries a turkey every Thanksgiving, and he injects this jalapeno butter into it.
- 28:13SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, it's fantastic.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Tyler Shuck is the jalapeno butter in your in your fried turkey.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: You're gonna hear around that's gonna hang around for a few episodes, but yeah, man, we're we're excited for Tyler Shuck.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, speaking of Texas Tech quarterbacks, we may as well get into our top five all-time Texas Tech quarterbacks.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: This is the most famous position in college football.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: It is the most, uh, it's just the you need a guy who's good on this end to compete in in college football.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: So uh breaking down this top five, like we mentioned earlier, was very hard.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: Very hard.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: It's hard when you haven't watched the old, old guys and the guys that had an impact that necessarily doesn't show on the stat sheet, but led to wins and led to uh just fan support, you know, that kind of stuff.
- 29:08SPEAKER_05: So uh don't blame us too hard for maybe missing on a couple of these, uh, especially number five and number four.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Can I can I ask you like a pre-question to this?
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Is Texas Tech more known for the quarterback position or the wide receiver position?
- 29:24SPEAKER_05: I I mean, I could name more probably the the common college football slash football fan would probably know more wide receivers that came from Texas Tech than quarterbacks.
- 29:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, after I well, and we won't spoil it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: We're not gonna spoil the guys that are on this list because we're just about to break them down.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: But uh, I I think we're more if you're talking about like what's your more position you at Texas Tech, it's probably wide receiver.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I probably have to agree with that.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 29:54SPEAKER_05: So Tristan, you want to give me your uh your number five?
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, all right.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: Well, I hope this plot doesn't lose too much credibility.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: Not that there's a ton to begin with.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: I just poured another uh Texas Sotal to numb numb the dumbness out of my brain here.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: Are you saying sodal?
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Sotal, Texas Sotal.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: It's not it's not like Texas soda, it's Texas Sotal, or it's it's it's S-O-T-O-L.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: It's it's soda door, it's phenomenal.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: It's like a mezcal.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: It's really good.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Okay, good for you.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: All right, anyway.
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: Wait, wait a throw up the vibe.
- 30:29SPEAKER_04: Okay, y'all.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: So I I'm 25 years old.
- 30:32SPEAKER_04: I can say I've only really been an active fan of Texas Tech for what, 13 years?
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: So whenever I talk about this list, my quarterback memory begins at Seth Diggy.
- 30:46SPEAKER_04: So to give you an idea of where my frame of reference can go, that's it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: So I'm uh all I know is Big 12 Texas Tech, but I did my best to dig through the oldies.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: Um, so I'm gonna start there.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm gonna start with Rodney Allison.
- 31:03SPEAKER_04: He's an oldie, he's out of the Southwest Conference, and the reason why I did that is the guy was succeeding when Texas Tech just wasn't.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: Um, apparently we were not very good during his timeline, and but he managed to become MVP of the Southwest Conference and ended up tying for a Southwest Conference championship.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: So he he really helped elevate the program in because we were so new, new to this whole power conference deal.
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: We were just accepted into the Southwest Conference, so we made a loud noise with him.
- 31:36SPEAKER_04: So I decided to give number five, uh, you know, since that's pretty uncontroversial to put somebody there to an old guy.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go with Rodney Allison.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Good for you for putting an old guy.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: I put like one old guy on this list.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, I I have a few in the honorable mentions, but I just I just didn't know.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: It's so hard when you when you weren't there and when you didn't experience what they brought to the table.
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: It was such a different game back then.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: You know, you'll look at stats from back then, you'll be like, okay, this guy threw seven interceptions and nine touchdowns through the whole season.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we should have we should have prefaced this.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: We should have prefaced this saying that today's game caters to the quarterback in a different way than it did back then.
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: But yeah, man, I mean, I I'm not gonna blame you for your pick.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: Obviously, if he's if he's a a conference champion at Texas Tech, you know, he deserves to be pretty high on this list.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: So my number five, I I did it.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: I put BJ Simmons.
- 32:32SPEAKER_05: Uh you did it?
- 32:33SPEAKER_05: I did it, I did it.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: Uh one season and he's on here.
- 32:38SPEAKER_05: Well, listen, this is my reasoning.
- 32:40SPEAKER_05: Uh one year as a starter, 52 touchdowns in the 2003 season alone.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: He went eight and five in that season.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: He he only started one season and he's ninth all-time in passing yards at Texas Tech.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: He is first in all-time single season passing yards at Texas Tech, and he threw he holds three of the top 10 highest single-game passing yardages in Texas Tech history, including one where he threw 661 yards against Ole Miss in 2003.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: He and and really it's not it's not his fault that he only started one year, he was behind Cliff Kingsbury for two of those years.
- 33:26SPEAKER_05: So I'm not gonna I'm not gonna fault him for just having been behind Cliff Kingsbury, who surprise, surprise, is gonna show up later on in this list.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: So I had to put him top five because that is one of the most outrageous seasons of college football ever.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: That is absolutely bonkers to be all time yards leader in Texas Tech history, top 10 in one season.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: That is unbelievable.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: That is true unfiltered raw Mike Leach football.
- 34:03SPEAKER_05: Hey, BJ, you're gonna throw that shit 50 times this game every single week.
- 34:11SPEAKER_05: Okay, like uh it's just so impressive what he did in that 03 season that I had to put him on the list.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: I know that's gonna be controversial.
- 34:19SPEAKER_05: I know a lot of people are gonna say, hey, he only played one year.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: How can he be in your top five?
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: But you know, uh that's one season was one of the most impressive and probably the most impressive in Texas Tech quarterback history.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then I'm gonna give it honorable mentions.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: I put him in honorable mentions to BJ because and the guy's like a huge fan to this day, and like this that guy's bleed scarlet and black.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: He's he's all over anything, Texas Tech, where he can.
- 34:43SPEAKER_04: So huge props to him.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: And obviously, playing a great season, even if it was just one.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: Um, it's crazy.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: It says a lot to be an all-time great out of one season.
- 34:54SPEAKER_04: So that's that's not a bad pick, man.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: It's just it's just a wild pick for one season.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: It is, it is, and I'm I'm you know, I'm probably wrong on it.
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: Granted, this was very hard to put number five and number four.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, number five and number four, I feel like could absolutely be shifted around with our listeners.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: I'm sure some of our older listeners, especially, would be able to tell us more about the past there.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: Because I I went with I went ahead and did another Southwest conference with number four because number three is where it gets uh number three is where it gets real.
- 35:22SPEAKER_04: Like that's where we can really start discussing it.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: With number four, I put Billy Joel, uh Billy Joe Tolliver.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: Did I say it right that time?
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: You said it right that time.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: Hell yeah.
- 35:31SPEAKER_04: Well, he was an all-southwest conference quarterback, he did great in the 80s, and uh just I mean, I like I said, I wanted to give love to the old guys because it just felt wrong to do all 2000 century guys.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I I I couldn't tell you too much about his game, but the guy got a lot of hype on any article I could read about him.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: And just looking back at his his stats, they're great, especially in the time where quarter packs weren't the center of attention like they are now when it comes to yards.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: So just I had to give him a nod, and he had a he went to the NFL and all that, which is which isn't that common for a uh for a Texas Tech quarterback.
- 36:07SPEAKER_04: So I had to give him a nod, and that's my last Southwest conference nod.
- 36:11SPEAKER_05: That's also who I put in number four, and you have to look at his professional career because he did have an 11-year professional career after Texas Tech.
- 36:20SPEAKER_05: He was controversial, or not controversial, but uh despite what I said about BJ Simmons, uh, this guy also gets a little boost for being a four-year starter at Texas Tech.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, played during you know some of the Southwest conference years, uh, led to some, you know, he didn't have the best record, probably pretty mediocre throughout his entire uh career at Texas Tech, but left at the time when he left, he was the all-time leader in passing yards at Texas Tech.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: So gotta give him a shout out.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: He was also my number four.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: Wow, it sounds like we're gonna enter our agreement zone.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I wonder if we're gonna ride the ingredient zone.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: So well, I don't know.
- 36:58SPEAKER_05: You told me one and two may be different, and I feel like you know who I have, one and two, but uh let's go, let's go to three.
- 37:05SPEAKER_05: We both have what Cliff Kingsbury is Cliff Kingsbury, yeah.
- 37:09SPEAKER_05: Cliff Kingsbury is both of our number threes, second in career passing yards at Texas Tex, second in career touchdowns, overall wins.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: I thought this was one of the best stats that he did.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: The overall wins of the team increased every single year he was here, so it was, I think, six wins to seven wins to seven wins to nine wins.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, it just he just kept winning and kept getting better.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Cliff was an all-time great quarterback at Texas Tech.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: What's really cool about Cliff is he was the dawn, he was the dawn of a new era, not just in at Texas Tech, but for college football.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: Like they changed college football forever.
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: Um, that was whenever we really started just slinging it.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: That was Mike Leech's first years, and that was whenever the air raid hit the college football world like a sack of bricks.
- 37:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's really cool to include him, and also it's really cool to include him because of how successful he's been since he's graduated.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, the guy got to come back and coach his alma mater, and then he got now he's a head coach at an NFL team.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: That's incredible.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I I love that we have an alumni who not only played for the team but got to go and do all that.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, that just makes putting him at number three even easier, even with his career.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: That sounds a lot better, what you said than what the actual story is.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: As we all know with Cliff Kingsbury, uh, you know, obviously it's a failure at what he did coaching at Texas Tech.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, but where he is now and the innovative coach that he is today, I do agree with you in terms of, you know, he's gonna do good things at Arizona.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: He's uh, you know, his first couple of years, he's had a very young team, but I think he is a real contender and a lot of people love him.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, in the media, other coaches.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: I do, I still like Cliff Kingsbury.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: He's just not, I mean, it's just hard to get past what happened to Tech during his time here.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: And and it's it's so hard to see what he did when we had Patrick Mahomes and not be at least a little upset.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: I know, I I I feel where you're coming from with that that negativity, but at the same time, I always say I don't think it was a bad hire.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: I just don't think he's the right kind of guy for a college football coach.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: I think those you can separate those two things.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: And he's an alum, and he had an amazing season as a player, and he still represents the Scarlet and Black with a lot of class and pride.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: So he's never been controversial, it's never been embarrassing to say that he's an alum.
- 39:30SPEAKER_04: And I not every head coach is going to be good.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: That's just a fact of the game.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: So um, but he'll always have his his time as a ball player, and he'll always have his time as a head coach, whether it was good or not.
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: Two things can be true.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: We can still love Cliff, and firing him was also the right thing.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: I agree.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: Two things, two things can be true here.
- 39:49SPEAKER_05: So let's move on.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: Cliff was both of our number threes.
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what's your number two?
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: All right, so this is where it gets controversial, isn't it?
- 39:58SPEAKER_04: I guess.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: All right, we'll see what happens.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: Number two, I'm sure I'm gonna upset some listeners as well.
- 40:05SPEAKER_04: Graham Harrell.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, I can't believe you did it.
- 40:08SPEAKER_04: I did, oh, I knew this would happen.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: Well, let me explain.
- 40:16SPEAKER_04: Well, I guess you can he since he's also he's your number one, isn't he?
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: Yes, he's my he's he's most people's number one.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: All right, let's talk.
- 40:24SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about Graham Harold then.
- 40:25SPEAKER_05: So let's talk about Graham Harrell.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: Why can you not put him at number two?
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, I mean, and I'm not, I mean, like you can put him as number one too.
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: See, this is this is more of like an A1A and one B, honestly, for me.
- 40:38SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: I know that's a cop-out, but this this guy is on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 40:44SPEAKER_04: He has the most legendary game of all time at Texas Tech University, and he was you at the time he was the highest uh rated recruited out of high school, high quarterback out of high school we've ever had.
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: And then he goes and just tears at the F up and wins a Big 12 uh South Division and everything.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: And now he's an offense coordinator at USC.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: And the guy is just an amazing player and alum for Texas Tech.
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: But I had to put him at number two for a reason we can get to.
- 41:13SPEAKER_05: Okay, let's break down Graham Harrell.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: All-time leader in passing yards at Texas Tech, highest completion percentage in Texas Tech history, while also having the most passing attempts in Texas Tech history.
- 41:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, second and third in all time in single season yards and touchdowns, first in passing touchdowns in Texas Tech history, four separate six touchdown performances, and the most important factor that puts him above Patrick Mahomes is the 37 and 14 overall record at Texas Tech University.
- 41:49SPEAKER_05: The wins put him over, and the stats are damn near the same in terms of Patrick Mahomes and Graham Harrell.
- 41:57SPEAKER_05: You I can understand putting Patrick Mahomes above Graham Harrell if you're taking into account their pro careers.
- 42:05SPEAKER_05: I can understand that, and the overall influence that player has had on what the football community as a whole.
- 42:14SPEAKER_05: But in terms of Texas Tech quarterbacks, I just don't think there's any way you can put Patrick Mahomes above Graham Harrell.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: It was a golden age with Graham Harrell.
- 42:23SPEAKER_04: He was he was on top of the mountain, man.
- 42:25SPEAKER_04: Like that was that was the highest we've been since.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: We've been chasing that high since.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: And I'm not trying to knock him at all.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: I just think his only problem on this list is that we also had Patrick Mahomes come to the school, is all that's my only thing with it, you know.
- 42:40SPEAKER_04: And um, an amazing career and all that, but again, it's we're on a really long conference championship drought as well.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: As amazing he was, we still didn't win a conference championship.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: I know it's a controversial topic because um we could have been in the Big 12 championship, but they pit put OU instead.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: But um I'm not trying to knock on Graham here at all.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: I'm just saying, like, it's he's one of the all-time greats and golden age of all time.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: But I unfortunately he's just not Patrick Mahomes, is my final point with it.
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: I was I was watching a video on YouTube, and it's a cool video.
- 43:17SPEAKER_05: It look up like the Big 12 uh South title race 2008 and go look it up because it's a really cool video.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: It breaks down tech the Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas kind of battle for that Big 12 South title.
- 43:31SPEAKER_05: Um, and we all got the title, by the way.
- 43:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: But what it does show is like clips from like ESPN and stuff as the season's going on.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: So you're seeing Sports Center guys talk about Texas Tech as the number two team in the country after we beat Texas, possibly playing Alabama in the national championship.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: That we never got with Patrick Mahomes.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: And this is we've said this before, this is totally not.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Patrick Mahomes to blame on this.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's it's 100% on the recruiting and the defense that we had during Patrick Mahomes' era.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, another kind of headbutt that we would have is, or maybe that some people would have, is switch the two on their teams and would they still be as good as they were?
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: You know, like put Graham Harrel, put Graham Harrell on the Patrick Mahomes teams and put Patrick Mahomes on the Graham Harrel teams, and how would they do?
- 44:29SPEAKER_05: Sheesh.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: That makes me sad thinking about it.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: It it does, and it's a really fun debate and really like uh crazy to think about Patrick Mahomes throwing to Michael Crabtree and doing all that kind of stuff.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: But uh just in terms of reality, bringing it back, uh there's just no way that I can put Patrick Mahomes above Graham Harold.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: There's just no way.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: I think we're in a situation where there's not a correct answer for either of the two.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: Because I mean, once we start talking about Patrick Mahomes, I mean we'll be like, okay, yeah, that's that's a fair argument as well.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: So um you and I always say, like, if if Matt Wells doesn't do what he does, I would like Graham Harold to be looked at as a head coach, especially if he does well with USC.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: So um that we love him and he's a legend, and I bet we'll be throwing him in the ring of honor very, very soon.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: And I think I think the four years also kind of boosts Graham Harrell a little bit more.
- 45:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, Patrick Mahomes only started two years while he was here.
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, but those two years were fantastic.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: Let's just go into Patrick Mahomes right now because you had him number one.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: He is my number two on all-time Texas Tech quarterbacks, third in career passing yards at Texas Tech, third in career touchdowns.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: If he played that extra year that he had, he most definitely would have probably been the all-time leader in both of those categories.
- 45:48SPEAKER_05: We have to take that into account.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: Um, and then who can forget 819 total yards against Oklahoma in 2016.
- 45:57SPEAKER_05: And if that game doesn't define the entire Patrick Mahomes era at Texas Tech, I don't know what does.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: Because putting up that ridiculous of stats in a college football game and still losing is ultimate Texas Tech football the last 10 years.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: So um, man, and and the thing, the thing that puts him above Cliff Kingsbury, even for me, is NFL legend in the making.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: He's going to be uh, you know, if his career goes as it should, uh, as it's going, he's gonna probably be the greatest of all time.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: You know, Tom Brady's a tough one to top, he really is.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: He's playing, he's 43 right now, and he just won a Super Bowl.
- 46:33SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, I'm not gonna say he's gonna be the GOAT right now, but he is definitely in the making to be.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: I I think I what I was kind of thinking about today, whenever I was thinking about this list, is what the Tom Brady Patrick Mahomes discussion is probably going to be is like the LeBron Michael Jordan conversation.
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like that's what it's kind of shaping up to look like.
- 46:55SPEAKER_04: Um, so that's which is awesome.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, because there's again another thing where it's like there's really no right answer between those two.
- 47:02SPEAKER_05: There is so there's that's such a that's such a fun debate to have.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: Like, I know people get sick of it and whatever.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: If you're from if you grew up in the era and watch Michael Jordan play, you're gonna say Michael Jordan's gonna be number one.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: If you grew up in our era and never got to really see Michael Jordan play, and you only saw LeBron, of course you're gonna say LeBron.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, I understand that.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm a Jordan guy and I'm younger, but I'm I'm kind of an outlier.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: But back to that, yes, I totally agree that the Brady Mahomes argument is probably gonna go down like the Jordan Braun argument.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, especially if Patrick Mahomes doesn't win as many rings as Tom Brady does, and that's just it's just a really, really, really tall order.
- 47:39SPEAKER_04: The man's in his 40s and he's still doing it.
- 47:42SPEAKER_04: It's bonkers.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: Um, freak of nature.
- 47:46SPEAKER_04: But all right, so this is why Patrick Mahomes is number one to me.
- 47:49SPEAKER_04: Um, the conversation was who's the greatest quarterback to ever go to Texas Tech?
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: And it's Patrick Mahomes.
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: It's the guy, the guy is regarded as the greatest quarterback in the NFL right now.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: Well, now that's a phrasing thing right there, because I I put it as top five Texas Tech quarterbacks of all time.
- 48:10SPEAKER_04: So yeah, that's that's what I mean.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: But uh, you're right, but which is kind of more of an interpretation thing.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: Like the guy will always be because here's the other thing is why the reason why I put Pat as number one is he will always be the best quarterback we've literally ever had.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: I I'm I'm a huge Texas Tech fan, but I'm also a big Patrick Mahomes fan, and I literally don't think that we'll ever get a quarterback is on that it will ever be on the same level.
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying we'll ever be good or have a good quarterback ever again.
- 48:38SPEAKER_04: I just think we had a we had what was called a generational talent, and we'll literally never get a player as good as him ever again.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: That's not a knock on tech.
- 48:46SPEAKER_04: Like, no, hardly any school can ever say that.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: That's the it's Texas Tech and Michigan that can say that because they've had Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: And we all know how good he was at tech, too.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: Like tech fans knew how good he was.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: It's just the NFL world didn't before he hit the scene.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: So that was my my thinking of it was the guy's just an unbelievable talent, an unmatched talent.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: And I don't know, I just couldn't justify putting Graham Harrell as good as he was over what could be possibly the greatest of all-time quarterback ever.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: It's true, the stats would say otherwise, but I even think if Michigan, if a Michigan podcast would have this argument, they would absolutely probably put two, three, four quarterbacks over Tom Brady because he didn't perform at Michigan the way that he's performing post-Michigan.
- 49:38SPEAKER_05: And I think that's the argument here is kind of like is it a quarterback debate or is it a Texas Tech debate?
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm saying?
- 49:45SPEAKER_04: So they that kind of I can just bring that back to what you were saying earlier.
- 49:49SPEAKER_04: Is it the team or the quarterback?
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Because I think I do think Patrick Mahomes a better quarterback than that.
- 49:55SPEAKER_05: And that's another that's another argument of this.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: That's that's why these are so hard to make because there's so many different factors, and no one should blame anybody for putting you know somebody over the other.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: You can disagree, and you can even disagree with us.
- 50:07SPEAKER_05: You could have whoever on this list that you maybe you have a personal connection to, and they just brought you into Texas Tech football, and you thought, hey, they had an impact on me more so than any of these old guys or any of these whatever had.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: So I'm gonna put them in my personal top five.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: So we're not gonna blame anybody for what their top five is.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: You know, you do you, but um, yeah, in my opinion, I would put Graham Harrell above Patrick Mahomes.
- 50:31SPEAKER_05: In your opinion, you're gonna put Pat above Graham Harrell.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: There's no right answer, there's no wrong answer.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: I I think Patrick Mahomes is and will always be the best athlete to ever come out of Texas Tech.
- 50:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that's and that's not a controversial opinion.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: I I agree 100% with that.
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: And I think that's that I think that's why that's that makes sense.
- 50:50SPEAKER_04: I I struggled.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: I thought I was gonna put Pat at two at first and put Graham at first, but then I was really thinking about it as like greatest quarterback to ever go through the school, and it has to be Patrick Mahomes.
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: I get you.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: No, um power to you, man.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: We're gonna agree to disagree on this one.
- 51:05SPEAKER_04: Before we move on, can I please ask you what you think would happen if you put Patrick Mahomes on that 2008 team?
- 51:13SPEAKER_05: National champions.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: There's no argument, there's zero argument.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: Are you kidding me?
- 51:18SPEAKER_05: There's no argument.
- 51:19SPEAKER_05: Bram Harrell was an amazing quarterback, but he wasn't the talent that Patrick Mahomes is.
- 51:25SPEAKER_05: You put him throwing to Michael freaking Cradtree.
- 51:28SPEAKER_05: Are you kidding?
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: Dude, no one stands a chance.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: Nobody, no, I mean, I would just love to see Patrick Mahomes in a Mike Leach air raid system.
- 51:38SPEAKER_05: Just see that boy yeet it out 85 yards four times a game.
- 51:42SPEAKER_05: Bro, did we not see that with Cliff?
- 51:44SPEAKER_05: We we kind of did, but Mike Leach was a whole new level.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're right, you're right.
- 51:49SPEAKER_05: That was a whole new level.
- 51:50SPEAKER_04: That was that was straight orthodox air raid.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: Cliff was obviously the more new version that implements other aspects, but yeah.
- 51:59SPEAKER_05: And I mean, that's another good thing for Cliff is he's so innovative.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: He's I mean, he's doing something with Arizona right now that he's trying to be a very innovative, innovative head coach and trying to implement new stuff that nobody's ever seen before.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: So power to Cliff.
- 52:13SPEAKER_05: You know, we again we always root for Cliff.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: We are not anti-Cliff on this podcast.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: We just we just want to express the two things can be true when it comes to him for sure.
- 52:23SPEAKER_04: And uh, it's it's still a controversy amongst the fan base that maybe we fired him too early.
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: A lot of BD guys think we fired him too early, but uh guys like us too think it was about time.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: He had enough time, he had he had more than enough time and he just did not produce, and that's he had the greatest quarterback to ever step on campus, and he couldn't get it done, and he couldn't get it done.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: He just uh recruit uh did you just agree he'll number one?
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: No, no, no, no, in terms of most talented, yes, he is number one, but no, and Texas Tech all-time quarterbacks Barry Merrill's number one, but let's let's do some honorable mentions because I wrote a few down.
- 52:58SPEAKER_05: Robert Hall, old guy, Joe Barnes, old guy.
- 53:03SPEAKER_05: Uh I had to put them in.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: They're old.
- 53:07SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: They had an impact, they won some games for Texas Tech.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm sorry to the older listeners.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, we are younger.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, I also put Sonny Gumby for his one year, and because he's our offensive corner.
- 53:19SPEAKER_05: That's all I was thinking of the same thing.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: You gotta give our boy a shout-out.
- 53:22SPEAKER_05: Gotta give Sonny Cumbe around.
- 53:23SPEAKER_04: The guy, the guy was backing up Cliff and BJ.
- 53:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah, it's it's not his fault he did one year when you're backing those guys up.
- 53:30SPEAKER_05: And he had a great year, he beat Aaron Rodgers in the ball game.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: So shouts out to Sonny Cumbee for that good, good year.
- 53:37SPEAKER_05: And then this one's for your brother.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: This one's for Austin McGonagall.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: Seth Dagey.
- 53:42SPEAKER_05: That's why I opened up with it.
- 53:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: You had to say it early.
- 53:46SPEAKER_05: I'm saying it now.
- 53:47SPEAKER_05: He had to be on my honorable mentions.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: He had a great career at Texas Tech, by the way.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, one of the one of the greatest upsets in Texas Tech football history going up and beating number, I think number four or number five, West Virginia at the time.
- 54:00SPEAKER_05: Who was at that game?
- 54:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, we were all, I think, uh we were at that game always.
- 54:04SPEAKER_05: We were at that game, yeah.
- 54:05SPEAKER_05: When we were juniors in high school, we were at that game.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was an unbelievable.
- 54:09SPEAKER_05: That was my first ever tech game.
- 54:11SPEAKER_05: That was my first ever Texas Tech game, and it was only downhill from there.
- 54:15SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, Raider Land.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 54:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm with you though.
- 54:21SPEAKER_04: I gave that I wanted to give that shout out for my brother as well because anytime we talk about Texas Tech quarterbacks, he always brings up he always brings up his quarterback during his college time, Seth Dagey.
- 54:31SPEAKER_04: And that guy, I watched that guy a ton.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: You know, I we went to a lot of tech games while I was in high school, and he was always the QB.
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: And it just you always have a special place in my heart, too.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: And the guy was a stud.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: He played really well, he's much better than his younger brother.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: Jarrett, why didn't you come to tech and why weren't you better?
- 54:48SPEAKER_05: I just don't understand.
- 54:49SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm actually okay with you not coming to tech because you haven't been uh but uh I had one more question before we move on to you, sir.
- 54:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, where where was Jed Duffy on your list?
- 55:02SPEAKER_04: Jed Duffy was at number zero.
- 55:05SPEAKER_05: He was above Patrick Mahomes, above absolutely Jed Duffy talents.
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: Okay, respond to us on Twitter.
- 55:12SPEAKER_05: Was Jed Duffy the greatest Texas Tech quarterback of all time, please.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, it's kind of crazy.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: Like that guy had a lot of hype when we recruited him.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: It just unfortunately things just didn't really translate to the college game too well for him.
- 55:27SPEAKER_04: He wasn't a bad quarterback, like he wasn't like we were talking about Davis Webb, who great Texas Tech ambassador, not so great player on the field, at least in Cliff's system.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: But you know, the the W's did not come, but neither did it for Patrick either, but just even less so.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: So you're saying Jed Duffy would be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time had he had his shot.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: If he was on the 08 team, double national champions.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: How would Jed Duffy do on the 08?
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: That's the real question.
- 55:59SPEAKER_05: No, I I like greatest quarterback name of all time.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: I'll give you that.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Very Texas Tech, Jet Duffy.
- 56:07SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 56:08SPEAKER_05: I wanted him to be good so bad, but he just wasn't.
- 56:11SPEAKER_04: I want every football team to be good so bad, name it.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Uh all right.
- 56:16SPEAKER_05: My new number one is Tyler Shuck, new greatest Texas Tech quarterback of all time.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, no, but for real, good luck to Tyler.
- 56:25SPEAKER_05: Let's get him in the top five.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: Next coming coming around, maybe when we do this next time, let's have Tyler Shuck in the top five.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying.
- 56:33SPEAKER_04: I really hope the legacy's restored, man.
- 56:35SPEAKER_04: Because Patrick Mahomes was like he he didn't it didn't take that long for him to follow really good quarterbacks.
- 56:43SPEAKER_04: Now it's been a while.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: Pat was the last one where you go, like, wow, that guy could ball out.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: So it's it because before Pat, you know, you could you could argue that Seth was a baller, and then before that was you know, Graham was a baller, and it didn't take that long between quarterbacks, and it's just Tex Tech is such a quarterback-oriented school.
- 57:00SPEAKER_04: So I'm really hoping we can get back to our old ways where we got a guy that we can depend on in the pocket there.
- 57:07SPEAKER_04: So uh I have a lot of a lot of a lot of high hopes for him, and it's cool to have a former Oregon duck on there, too, if I'm being honest.
- 57:14SPEAKER_04: So I just I'm ready for I'm ready for some success, man.
- 57:17SPEAKER_04: I'm ready for some W's, and I think he can guide us to them.
- 57:20SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 57:21SPEAKER_05: All power to you, Tyler.
- 57:23SPEAKER_05: Let's get it.
- 57:24SPEAKER_05: So we are gonna move on to our final segment before we do song of the week.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: Tristan, you brought this on to me.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, three sports-related questions that we're just gonna do quick fire back and forth, probably string up some convo.
- 57:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, Tristan, what's your first question, man?
- 57:39SPEAKER_04: I got the first fun one.
- 57:40SPEAKER_04: I put this in the Guns Up Nation slack.
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, flat or bevel?
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Double T.
- 57:45SPEAKER_05: Big Bevel guy over here.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: Um, I I've had this opinion for a long time, and it applies to basically every sports program.
- 57:54SPEAKER_05: Um, the throwback stuff is great.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: You need to embrace the throwback stuff.
- 58:00SPEAKER_05: You do not need to make your throwback stuff your main thing or your alternate stuff your main thing at Iowa State.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: Listen, I love the blackout uniforms that Iowa State does.
- 58:14SPEAKER_05: They don't need to be full-time uniforms, you don't need to bust those out five times a year.
- 58:19SPEAKER_05: What makes it special is when you do it that one or two games a year, like what Texas Tech does with their throwback uniforms.
- 58:26SPEAKER_05: I'm a little worried Texas Tech is kind of moving in in the direction to where they're gonna wear them four or five times a year.
- 58:32SPEAKER_05: They don't need to do that.
- 58:33SPEAKER_05: Bust them out once or twice a year for a big game.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: Do that.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: Be but I love the old school, the flat double T.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: I think it's iconic.
- 58:41SPEAKER_05: I think it you know it it has a lot of history behind it, but it does not need to be our main logo.
- 58:48SPEAKER_04: That's a good take.
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: It just I I agree with you, especially if I'm like like I'm buying like a polo, I want the bevel, you know.
- 58:55SPEAKER_05: If I'm you want like three bevel uh polos, and you want one flat double T polo, yeah.
- 59:04SPEAKER_04: That that's that's what I mean.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: And it's I'm a little bit of a hypocrite because I say that like my favorite outfit that we wear now is the white throwback helmet.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: I with the stars on it.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: Um and you know why you say that?
- 59:16SPEAKER_05: It's because it's special, it's because we don't bust it out that often.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: When it comes out, it just is that special.
- 59:23SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 59:23SPEAKER_04: So I I'm with you.
- 59:25SPEAKER_04: I I like the bevel, it's a modern take.
- 59:27SPEAKER_04: And then maybe in like 40 years, Texas Tech will uh introduce a new one.
- 59:31SPEAKER_04: And it's just yeah, this happens with schools, they just introduce new uh icons, it just helps keep the the content fresh.
- 59:37SPEAKER_04: So I do like I do like the bevel and I do like the throwback, and I'm glad that they implement them both in all sports.
- 59:44SPEAKER_05: No doubt, no doubt.
- 59:45SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, overall, I'm gonna say bevel because that is that's what we have now.
- 59:50SPEAKER_05: It's it's still a great logo, by the way.
- 59:52SPEAKER_05: It's not like some crappy logo that's some, yeah.
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: It really, I mean, I don't know if it gets too much hate, but it just gets it gets like some people just really live and die by the flat double T, and that's you know, whatever.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_05: If you were if you lived in that era, I guess you have that nostalgia feel or whatever, but um just I love it for the throwbacks, only busted out once or twice a year.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the the flat looks old, and another another thing with the flat is it doesn't show all the school colors.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: What's cool about the bevel is it shows all three school colors.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: It shows the scarlet, it shows the black, and it shows the white.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_04: The flat doesn't do that, and I think that's kind of what's kind of cool about the bevel.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_05: That's a that's a good opinion that I didn't think of.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_05: Good on you for doing that.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_05: So, all right, so after after bevel double T.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_05: My first question.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: It's just a light one to start.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_05: Uh favorite concession snack at a sporting event.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: Great question.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_05: Easy answer.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: Wow, okay.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_04: So and so and and okay, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Can we how hungry am I?
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: If I'm just looking to put like top off my pretty cool belly, it's peanuts.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_05: But if if if it's I'm actually say you're medium hungry, okay, hot dog.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you're choosing hot dog, that's your that's your go-to.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, hot hot dogs at sporting events in America is like peanut butter and jelly.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's fair.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: Hey, I'm not gonna argue with you.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_05: That I I love a good hot dog.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_05: I eat hot dogs probably more than the average human should eat hot dogs, but they're especially great at sporting events.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: I will agree with you.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: Mine is, of course, the soft pretzel.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_05: Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a I'm a big pretzel guy.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_05: I love them.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_04: Can I ask a follow-up question to that?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_04: Mustard or cheese?
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: Both.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: If I'm if I if I have the choice, I would get both.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_05: But I think I'll say cheese.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_05: I think it's like a spicy grainy mustard.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_05: No, see, that makes me it's like yellow mustard or no.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_04: What oh, wow, wow, huge disagreement.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, okay.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_05: That's I mean, you know, a big, big, classy guy with his whole uh grainy brown mustard, whatever.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_05: Get your gray coupon and get out.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_05: But no, I'm a I'm a Heinz yellow mustard guy.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_04: Well, I I know you.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_04: You no man in the world loves pretzels as much as you do.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_04: Like, that's your go-to snack, even when we're in college.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: Like, we're drinking three keystones, like pretzels are being busted out.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and I'm going through a whole thing of butter snaps one night.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_05: I I can't control myself, to be honest.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_05: But at a sporting event, I it's just instant.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_05: As soon as I walk into the arena or stadium, I crave a pretzel.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: It's just what it's what happens.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_05: The soft pretzel is the superior stadium snack in my eyes.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_04: It's a good call.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_04: No, no one, no one hates the soft pretzel, and it's one of those things that can you can really only get at a sporting event.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_04: Kind of like with the hot dog, it only feels like right when you're uh at a sporting event, or it's like the fourth of July.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_04: So it's it's very rare.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_04: Those things feel truly right.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_05: So that was my first quick fire.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_05: What's your number two?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: So this next one was inspired by the Rob Bros show with uh Ryan Hyantz, the Raider Land.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_04: The other day I was listening to them, they're on at 11 a uh 11 a.m.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_04: in Central Time.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_04: Um, every once in a while when I'm working, I throw them on for some live tech stuff.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_04: And their question of the day was, is Lubbock a college town?
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_04: Yes, I agree.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_04: But see, here here's here's the argument with uh with with Ryan.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_04: There were the the the argument Ryan provided was it's too big to be a college town, which I kind of get in a traditional sense, but if you're in Lubbock, Texas, you know you're in the same town as Texas Tech.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_05: When you go to local restaurants, how many how I guess I guess here's the real question on if it's a college town or not.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_05: If your local restaurants outside of like a 10 mile radius of the university are putting up Texas Tech flags or putting up university flags, it's a college town.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_05: Am I right?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: Do you agree with that?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, 100%.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: Uh, because like I actually texted in.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_04: Like my my argument was the most distinctive thing about Lubbock, Texas, is that it's home to Texas Tech University.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_04: And I think that alone makes it a college town.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_04: And that's and that's not a hit on Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_04: I love Tech Lubbock, Texas, and I do think it's more than just a college town.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_04: Um, but it is a college town.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech is the show, it's what the city built itself around to the size it is today.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_04: Um, I understand the population argument, but the but where's the threshold?
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_04: Because when we start looking about looking at college towns around Texas, you think about the major ones, you think about Lubbock, you think about Waco, you think about college station, all of them have more than 100,000 people.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_04: So then what is a college town if that's the case?
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, that's not a good argument because that only applies to Texas.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: Texas is so freaking massive.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: We have so many people that live in this state.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_05: Yes, of course, our college towns are even gonna have a hundred thousand plus people.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_05: That's just what it is, you know.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_05: Like Lawrence, Kansas, of course, it's not gonna have as many people because it's in freaking Kansas, you know?
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_04: So it it it just it's it's kind of a it's kind of one of those things, it's where you know you know.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like it's in uh Andy Staples of the Athletic.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_04: Whenever he did an article, uh Rob Ro pointed this out, was whenever he did an article of best places to eat uh at each college town in America, and his criteria was less than 500,000 people.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_04: I kind of understood that.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_04: That kind of makes sense.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, okay, but it's uh it's not.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm going through the same thing right now.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_05: I'm living in Baton Rouge, and Baton Rouge is The capital of Louisiana.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_05: It is where the state capital is.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_05: It is a pretty big city.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_05: Baton Rouge is a college town.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_05: It is.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_05: It lives and breathes LSU down here.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_05: You won't talk to a single person that does not give it give a crap about LSU.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_05: That's what to me defines a college town.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: If you talk to any local in Lubbock, they'll know about Texas Tech.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_05: You talk to any local in Baton Rouge, they will know about LSU.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: That's what defines a college town to me.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I I have to agree.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_04: And I I think I think you're on point with that point.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_04: It's just again, it kind of comes back to the one of the things is where if you know, you know.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_04: So, and I don't think Lubbock, Texas, would be what it is without Texas Tech.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_04: And I think that's has something to say about it too.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_04: I think Texas, I think Texas Tech, I think Lubbock would be more like an Amarillo or more like a Midland if Texas Tech wasn't there.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_04: And Lubbock's big much bigger than both of those cities.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_05: So, yeah, no doubt.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_05: No, I agree.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_05: And we're both saying Lubbock is a college town because it is.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_04: And we're we have a different perspective because we only went there as students.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_04: We didn't live there, live there.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_04: So, but it it's a college town.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_04: Everyone knows it's a college town.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_05: When everybody prepares for traffic on game day, that's when you know it's a college town.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_05: You know, like Austin, Texas, not a college town.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: Lubbock, Texas, college town.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_04: That's Fort Worth, not a college town.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_05: Fort Worth is definitely not a college town.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, like even Waco is kind of on the brink for me, but I think it it is a college town.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_05: Baylor to me just isn't that big of a university, big of a following.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_05: Uh it so that makes it a little tougher.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_05: I will still say that Waco's probably a college town, probably the crappiest college town in all of Texas.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: But you know, that's a hot take.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_04: Um, because I I think it's a part of a broader discussion, you know.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_04: That's always a thing, you know.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_04: Obviously, Lubbock and Wake are always brought up, but um, as worst college town in Texas, I mean for some reason college stations never ever brought up.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_04: Like, literally, all that town is is AM.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_04: Like, it's just it's like, can you anyway?
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_04: Like, what about like Denton or Prairie View or well, in terms of fun, no, Denton's not that fun.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_05: It's just like it's close to Dallas.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: That's what's cool about Denton.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like so that that's that's that's my point.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_04: It's like, so you know, is Waco really the worst?
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_04: If if Baylor's the biggest show in town, you know, that's that's kind of always my argument.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_05: Well, because think about what goes on in the town itself.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_05: What goes on in Waco?
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_05: Nothing.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_05: What goes on in Lubbock?
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: A lot of cool bar scenes, great country music, you know, all that good stuff.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_05: Baylor's just got or Waco's just got Baylor, and you know, that's all right.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_06: Small university, yeah.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_05: Small university, there's not a big following, you know, in terms of like, you know, the other schools in Texas.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_05: So uh we're getting off topic.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_05: US college town, Lubbock is absolutely a college town.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_05: My second question is funniest fan interaction at the Jones.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: What was the funny?
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_05: What was the funniest thing that you saw happen at the Jones during a tech football game?
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_04: Clay getting kicked out.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_04: Clay getting kicked out was hilarious.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_04: He got kicked out twice, and I can't really remember why he was getting kicked out.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_04: Like, honestly, I just I don't remember why clut clay kept getting kicked out.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_04: For reference, clay is one of our best friends.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_04: We went to every game with him.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, whenever he got whenever the like he just got yeeted out of the game.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_04: That was the funniest.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_04: Like, because it was just funny because it was happening with clay, but like, I just I don't remember why it was happening.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_05: It got, I think the first time it happened because he yelled, and the security guard thought, listen, we were all intoxicated when we were at the game.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: This is not just clay, this is everybody.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_05: What a drunk student at the Texas Tech game.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_05: I know who to thunk, but yeah, no, I think the first so the first time he got kicked out was because I think he was yelling or something.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_05: He got kicked out, he somehow made his way back in.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_05: I don't know how he did it, and then I remember we were I was over talking to a group of friends kind of by where the student gate is, and I listen, I'm stumbling too, so he's not alone on this.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: We were all stuck.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_04: Like I said, I can't remember what was really happening with Clay.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_05: We go over and I'm just talking in our little circle group of friends.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_05: Clay comes stumbling over, and he's like, you know, he's not like uh you know, like falling over, but he's you know, a little herky jerky back and forth, comes up and goes, What's up, guys?
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_05: And then as soon as he says that, security guy comes behind him and goes, Sir, have you been drinking?
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: And we say no, Clay.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_05: Clay's like, Yeah, and then he gets escorted out again.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_05: So shouts out to Clay.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he's not the first, but he is one of many to get kicked out of the Jones twice in one game.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_04: Can I do an honorable mention?
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_04: Do it this past game we went to at bail with uh with Baylor at Tech when the stadium was empty, and we were clearly like the loudest guys in this like empty ass stadium, and we're like tech for the love of god, because the whole the whole game was a struggle, and we were all like just like falling over from the embarrassment of the game, and it's like that was fun because and funny because I there's no situation where the Jones will ever be that empty again on a football game day.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it'll just it was just funny having that whole stadium to ourselves, essentially.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was, and you're a loud person, yeah.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_05: So very loud, so especially when I drink.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_05: When you say something, the people hear it, and the people were 100% behind us.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_04: They're supporting our our emotion for sure.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_05: I think my favorite uh, and and I have a multitude of these from the Jones during our time at tech, but our freshman year sticks out to me.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, we were not good, we were uh, I think we won't yeah, no, no, no, we no no no.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_05: This is funniest fan interactions at the Jones.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_05: This isn't best times at the Jones.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_05: So uh this was one of the first times we threw tortillas and we went all out.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, we froze them the night before.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_05: We bit holes in the middle, we drew on them, we drew on them, we drew stupid stuff that we won't say on the pod.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we brought them and they were still kind of solid at when we got into the stadium.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_05: And I managed first tortilla I ever threw at a tech game.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_05: I threw it and it managed to go right in between the scrum of the kickoff when everybody was all piled up, and I felt so proud of myself.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_05: But what was the icing on top of the cake was when a UT uh player picked it up and took a bite out of it.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_05: And you we all know as Texas Tech fans where we put those tortillas when we're going into the game because they're technically not allowed into the stadium.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_05: So, of course, we put them in our backside over there.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_05: So, you know, everybody was screaming profanities, it was a great time.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_05: UT players eating uh tortillas that were sitting in a uh weird uh part of the body, I will say.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, so shout out to that guy.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_05: I can't remember who it was on UT in 2014, but that would that always sticks out to me as one of the best times.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_04: That was a great memory.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_04: We're like the most popular guys in the section, us like dweeby little guys, and we had all these tortillas.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_04: We're like, hey, y'all want these tortillas we wrote on, and each one would say something different.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it was a great time, man.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_04: That was a good one.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_04: That's a good one, man.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_05: That was the one and only time we went through that much effort just to throw tortillas.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_04: After that, you know, I was on the lacrosse team.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_04: I would just give them to the freshman and be like, hey, this is your job to sneak these in.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a you sneak them in.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_05: If you get caught, you get caught.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: Whatever.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: It is what it is.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_05: But all right, man, go with your last question.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_04: All right, so this one I was gonna introduce kind of like a fun segment.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna bring up each time.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_04: All right, so a good off-season topic always and forever is Big 12 expansion.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_04: So my this this segment is called Yeah, drink.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_04: All right, here quick.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_04: Big 12 buy or pass.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_04: So you're gonna buy this team into the Big 12, you're gonna pass on them.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_05: We're we're just doing what, one a week, or what are we doing?
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm just doing one team a week.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_04: So we can sit here and talk about it.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_04: So, are you buying or passing on what is probably the most disgust team to enter the Big 12, the University of Central Florida?
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_05: At this point, with the 12th team playoff coming, I am absolutely letting UCF into the Big 12.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_05: You're buying?
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_05: I'm buying.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_05: I'm absolutely for it.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, UCF, a fantastic football program over the last few years.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: Uh Gus Malzon, former Auburn coach, is now their coach.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, they are in Florida, which is a big recruiting hotbed, somewhere that I would be okay with the Big 12 expanding to and getting Orlando, Florida.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_05: Well, just Florida in general.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_05: You just I mean, if you get like if you say you get like Tulsa, you can claim Oklahoma as some of your recruiting territory.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_05: Just like that.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_05: Well, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_05: Like Tulsa's a bad example, but UCF has been so good, and Orlando is, you know, a big city.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_05: It's got a lot of people, a lot of good players coming from that area.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_05: So Flor adding Florida as a recruiting bed to the Big 12.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_05: This is the exact reason that the SEC added AM so they could get some of Texas in the SEC.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_05: I would like some of Florida in the Big 12 if we're just going full expansion.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, sure.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_04: I think there's a big difference between adding AM and adding UCF.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_04: AM is a storied program, they're very old, they have a huge fan base, they have a huge alumni base, they're pro they're proven goods as much as I hate them.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_04: Um, UCF is not.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_04: What's intriguing about UCF is that they're the purest sleeping giant out there.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_04: They're very they're a fun what could be.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_04: AM was never a what could be.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_04: They were they're AM.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_04: Um but UCF is a what could be.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_04: They're the largest school in Florida, population-wise, student population-wise, and their fan base has been rabid since they've hit success.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_04: And I want fans that care, and they look like they care because what's fun about UCF fans is they have a huge chip on their shoulder, kind of like Houston Cougars, where they're the best G5 team in the state, and they think that they could absolutely run with and beat the P5 teams in the state.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_04: And what's cool about that is I think they could too.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_04: I think you throw us, I think if you slap a Big 12 logo onto UCF, one they're recruiting, which is already awesome.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_04: They're beating us in recruiting, they're getting four stars and three stars.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_04: Um, that that uh that automatically gets easier for them, and they get to hold themselves to the same level as Florida, Florida State, Miami, uh conference-wise.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_04: And I think that immediately breeds a new rivalry with all the schools there because they just get to be like, hey, schedule us, schedule us.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_04: You won't schedule us, they're already doing that, but it gets like it gets way louder once they join a P5.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_04: And I think that kind of breeds a huge disruption within Florida, and I think the Big 12 could absolutely do that.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_04: Like, I think that that's a cool prospect to introduce a Heartland conference into this renegade team that's out in Florida.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_05: That's a great so you're buying.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_04: I'm buying.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_04: I I I I would buy UCF because what's gonna be fun about these whenever I go through the teams each week, I'm gonna do it every every every week during the offseason with my three questions.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_04: Is that every once in a while there'll be a hard one where it's like I don't know whether to buy or pass, but I decided with this one because it's one of the biggest ones that's always brought up, and I think I think you buy because um I think their only drawback is I don't know if their facilities, stadiums, and all there, that all that is there, but see that can improve.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_05: It can, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_05: Like what you said earlier about the fan base being where it is right now, the school population, the alumni base, all that stuff's there.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_05: The the you know, recent success is there.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_05: What you look for when you're looking at Big 12 expansion and who you want to invite to the conference is what can get better and what you can see turning into a possibly powerhouse, you know.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_05: So I think I think UCF is an absolute buy at this point, for sure.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_04: And a lot of people are like some some kind of fringe people are saying that UCF doesn't gain anything by being the Big 12 because now that the playoff is likely going to expand, UCF has a really great shot of being there, and I agree.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_04: But what people don't realize is that there's an enormous money and respect difference between the American and Big 12, and no school in the right mind turns down all of that cash and all that respect just for an easier path to the playoff.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_04: Because the long-term decision is obviously going to be towards the money and the security, because UCF isn't going to be making the playoff every year, nobody is, unless you're the four programs we always talk about.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_04: So I think it it no no golden night fan is turning down a big nine, big 12 invite because your paycheck jumps 30 million dollars.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_05: And the and the paycheck also helps increase other sports as bingo.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_05: It's not just football, it's about your basketball team gets a boost from playing Kansas and Texas and Texas Tech and all these good teams every single year in the best basketball conference.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_05: You know, baseball can come running in with a great into the great Big 12 conference.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, you have to as an athletic director, you have to think about the other sports, and it's not just about football, you know.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_04: Right, right, yeah, right.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_04: And you as the basketball guy is UCF's basketball good enough to think about it?
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_05: It's had some years, like it's definitely had some years.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_05: They took uh Duke with Zion to the last minute, you know.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_05: It was it was one miss tip in away from upsetting Duke and going to the Elite Eight that one year.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_05: So UCF has the ability to put together some good teams, you know, they're in an NBA city, to be honest.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_05: You know, that's another part of it, too.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_04: So um is that not another drawback though, that they're in a city with these professional teams?
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_04: Because in the Big 12, you you have exclusively teams that don't share an area with a professional team, and that's a part of being a college team.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_05: Does that UCF Orlando?
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_05: The Orlando Magic don't have the draw that the Lakers do.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_05: It just it not, you know, I think Florida Panthers.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_05: Uh Florida Panthers, no hockey team.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, yeah, no, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_05: Just saying like that doesn't football team.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_05: The Magic don't bring in the same thing that a if I would agree with you if it was like an LA or or a Houston or you know, a Dallas or something like that, but uh Orlando, not the same in that regard.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_04: Right, I agree with you.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_04: I I I I would buy it.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_04: The reason why I brought this up also is like uh one of my favorite Big 12 podcasts, Harlan College Sports, hosted by Pete Mundo.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_04: He he released his latest episode uh that he would buy UCF.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, and I think a lot of people would get behind that.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_04: It's a the only problem is it's a road trip as of all road trips, just like West Virginia is.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_04: But you know, it's it's the modern era.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_04: I don't know how much geography matters anymore as much as we'd like it to.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_05: At this point, you're either taken from the from the pack or you're going far.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, what do you think?
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_05: Or American or Mount West.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, or Houston, I guess.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_05: But yeah, well, that'll be another day.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_05: Okay, that'll be another day, but we'll get we'll get into that another day.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna give you my final question right here.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's it's it's a controversial topic, and it was more of a hot topic when we were kind of up and coming in basketball, but court storming.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_05: How often does a team courtstorm, you know, when like so when we were like a fringe tournament team and we would courtstorm when we beat a we were an unranked team for you know 10 years or whatever, and we finally consistently are beating like the 11 and the 15 and everything, and we're beating and we're court storming after we beat the 15th ranked team in the nation.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_05: Is that okay?
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_04: Okay, I think as much as it can get the students involved into the game, into the atmosphere, it's good.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_04: I because um I think that's like a huge memory jump for students at uh at their college sporting events.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_04: I think rushing the field and rushing the court is the pinnacle of the student fan of experience.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so yes, I think if you're upsetting a really good team, I don't see why you don't court rush.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't like this pretentious you're a good team now, so you can't rush the court anymore attitude because it's still a big deal and it's still fun.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_04: It's still because you get to go down there and jump around with the players, like it's it's nuts.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_04: It's you can't top it as a fan experience, like at all.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like no matter what.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_04: Like that is the pinnacle of the fan experience.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_05: I'm very pro-court storming.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_05: When when it becomes dicey to me, is when it's out of a top out of the top 10, basically.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_05: When you're beating a team, you're an unranked team, and you beat a team that is ranked, but they're not in the top 10.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_05: That's where I kind of draw the line.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_05: Well, and and listen, I you know, when we were terrible at basketball for so many years, and we finally beat a number 11 Iowa State, and we are the rowdy crowd that we are at Texas Tech, of course we're gonna court storm.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna blame you know the students for wanting to storm the court and get on the court for for winning a big game for the first time in nine years or whatever.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_05: But uh now that we are at the spot that we are at, I would not say that court storming is ideal if we're beating a number 15 team in the nation.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_04: All right, but what if we're not ranked?
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_04: What if we're behind that number 15 team?
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_04: Is that still fair?
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_05: Not at the point that we are with our with our program.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_05: No, I now I would say something different back in 2013, but not now.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_05: Not not to the point where we have gotten so much success and we are consistently in the top 25.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_05: There's no reason we should be court storming at a at a 15th ranked team, even if we are unranked.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_04: All right, follow-up question.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_04: Rivals.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_04: All right, let's say we're unranked when Chris Beard's UT comes into town and they're top 25.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_04: Yes, that's different.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_04: Chris Beard changes the game.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_04: Chris Beard, I so does UT change the game in general?
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think UT in general changes the game.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_05: Even you know, even if Chris Beard didn't go.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_05: I uh I don't know.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_05: UT hits different.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_05: UT hits different than those other uh those other teams, just because yeah, and I guess Kansas, but even Kansas, we don't have the rivalry that we do with UT.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I you're right.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_04: I just mean like you're beating a blue blood and you're unranked or something like that.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_05: But um, I guess I guess it depends.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_05: I guess you know, it's it's kind of a uh uh take it by take it by game basis or whatever.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, if if at this point, you know, start next season, we're gonna start unranked, we're not gonna be a top 25 pre-ranked team.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_05: And if we upset somebody that is 15 or something, I would not expect our fan base to rush the court.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't expect them to do it either, but I'm not gonna be one of those guys that says stop doing it, we look like fools, or something like that.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_04: I think as long as the students are having fun, because that's what matters, that's what makes the atmosphere.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_04: If the students are rowdy, the whole arena will get rowdy.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_04: So it's it's it's I just want the students in it as much as they can and making the memories that they can.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_04: They only have four years there.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_04: The only time you and I ever got to experience something like that was in basketball.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_04: Where were we just this unranked Tubby Smith team upsetting guys every once in a while?
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_04: That was the only time you and I ever got to experience court rushing because the football team never let us rush the field.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_04: We were in high school when the last time we saw the football team rush the field, which wasn't fair, you know.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_04: So I was always very upset that we never got to do that.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_04: So um, that's just it's just one of those student memories you'll never forget.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_04: So I remember doing it against Iowa State.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_04: I remember rushing the court against West Virginia, we were rushing the court against OU.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_04: We just I'm all for students getting that.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_05: That OU rush was probably the greatest winning, winning moment that we experienced at Texas Tech, no doubt.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_05: I mean, just the overall experience of beating number three OU with Buddy Healed and everything like that in the USA when we did not have you know the team that we have now.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_05: It's just it's it was an awesome feeling, and it's something that we're always gonna remember.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_05: Rushing the court is something awesome.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_05: And yeah, I totally agree with you.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_05: People that are pretentious about the whole thing, chill out a little bit, you know, take it easy.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_05: Let the students let the students have a good time.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_04: We're we're Texas Tech, we're not Duke.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_04: Okay, relax.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_04: You know, this this is still new to us.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_04: Um, and especially whenever you're upsetting a team you really hate like OU, and that's just like that's why Toddy will always have a really special place in my heart.
- 1:27:09SPEAKER_04: Like he made the best sports memory of in at Texas Tech in my mind, you know.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that he totally traveled, uh, by the way.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_05: Hey, before the end buzzer, hey, we already won the thing, so we can say whatever we want.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_05: But uh when he picked up the ball at the end after OU missed that tip in to win the game, and he picked the ball and just started running with it.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_05: Fantastic, greatest moment ever.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_04: It's a great photograph, though.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it is.
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_04: Whatever Toddy's like running away from the line, like it's a great photograph.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_05: The people that don't know Toddy is Tatra Gaucher, of course.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sorry guys, but uh that that the what's cool about that is like that season was like the dawn, the dawn of Texas Tech being greater than it ever was on the on the hardwood court.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_05: That's something we can always say is that we were there what during the Texas Tech basketball rejuvenation, you know.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_05: Um if if there we can call it a region.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, during during the I don't even know the the dawn of Texas Tech basketball.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_05: We were there.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_05: We were there.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_05: We were the birds.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_04: We've reached levels we've never ever seen before.
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_05: So yeah but we had we had I mean we had good teams before that but that's for that's for another pod.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk about we it's a long off season we have a lot of stuff to talk about but let's finish off this longer pod.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_04: This was offseason episode number one but we're gonna go to song of the week tristan you had a theme for song of the week I did Steve and I were from Military City we're from Alamo City we're from the river city from San Antonio South Texas we're South Texas boys um it's fiesta time so we decided we'd uh celebrate our roots and do a Spanish song where the lyrics are exclusively in Spanish.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_05: Well no we didn't agree to that hold on we didn't agree we didn't agree to the lyrics being exclusively in Spanish oh you got the ultimate text mex then if you're blending it you're right fine man that's what San Antonio is it's exactly it is it is so I'm gonna do we're gonna do the blend so we're gonna do a Spanish oriented songs and it's just it's gonna be a lot of fun because it's just I like the theme songs of the week so Steven you want to kick it off i oh I'll go first this time yeah let's do the change of face it took it took till episode 46 for me to go first on song of the week that's fine I will start with my song of the week and listen Tristan is already a repeated artist we've been over this multiple times oh my gosh multiple times Christmas totally counts he also repeated though this is not an asterisk I am actually repeating artists I have done the Los Only Boys before but when Tristan brought this to me I said there is no other artist I need to name other than the Los Only Boys talking about a Fiesta song of the week these guys are were they're a San Angelo band but they really embrace San Antonio culture they are always there they are there post Spurs games I've seen them at Spurs games they embrace the city and the culture the the Mexican influence that the city provides my song of the week is a cover from the Los Only Boys it is born on the bayou by Los Lonely Boys and I I you know bayou you don't associate with San Antonio but I am in the bayou right now so this song kind of brings stuff back to me it brings San Antonio back to me a little bit with the Los Only Boys uh the song originally recorded by the Credence Clearwater revival but this song is so great man it's just a rock jam rock anthem it's awesome it brings you know Mexican culture is such a big part of San Antonio big part of the city everything that I grew up in so everything the Los Only Boys puts out rocky vibes I just love it man that was born on the by you by the Los Only Boys by you born on the by you that's where I'm from and that's what I say I mean y'all he he's Steven Rodriguez so that's it some people won't believe it but I am I knew the uh lost lonely boys I knew it and and what's fun about that pick is you kind of blend the West Texas with uh you know our college days with our our childhood days in South Texas so it's a great blend great Texas group man so good one I love celebrating the most underrated city in the whole state which I fully believe no doubt um and uh so with this one I'm gonna go with it's a it's you know if you're gonna pigeonhole them it's gonna be a country rock band they're an American country rock band they're called the Mavericks they're they have they're not exactly new to the game they've been around for a long time but their last album was completely in Spanish it's called the Mavericks in Espanol and I encourage all of you especially you Steven Rodriguez to listen to this album song to song because they're unskippable and some of the prettiest music I've ever heard in my life um it's it's just beautiful song to song but the song I'm gonna recommend out of all of them to get y'all hooked on it is Resudros Resudros this is this is the italian the Irish American of Spanish you'll get it one of these days resur Resurdros okay we'll put the title in the description for for all of you that don't understand that I love the song I'm ashamed because you know being being from San Antonio that I can't just reserdros Reserdos Reservos there we go nailed it right there first time but uh yeah so that that's that's my song for y'all and I do recommend y'all listen to the album and it's just it's a phenomenal through and through and this song is just a banger.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_05: Nuestros caminos separará llegó a su pios recuerdos se vive that was that was a good song of the week i'm I'm glad you brought on that theme because I am missing San Antonio I'm missing uh Fiesta which is normally not this time of year but because of COVID they they thought hey let's throw a whole bunch of people in downtown San Antonio in June and let everybody and let everybody sweat it out but uh seriously my parents were at Niosa last night they had a great time uh so you know everybody that has a chance to go to a Fiesta event in San Antonio I would encourage it it is a fantastic time 100% no arguments from me man all right man let's end it off like we do every episode with a few plugs you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter Tristan is at Tristy Mick I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez follow the pod on Twitter that it's at talking tech pod we give y'all updates on what's happening with the podcast we give y'all just everything we can we try to be funny if you like our stuff great if not you know we're still gonna say it anyway you can follow our songs of the week playlist it is on Spotify and Apple Music we'll link that on Twitter send us your mailbag please send us mailbag questions we this is the off season we need to start coming up with some stuff uh we're gonna try to get some interviews lined up for y'all soon but uh in the meantime please send us your mailbag questions send us whatever you want about Texas Tech about sports about whatever you want uh and that is you can send it to our Gmail talkingtechpod at gmail.com but we're gonna end it off like always always wreck em tech wreck em tech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun I love the game of basketball but also love West Texas and I love Steven and Tristan I'm extremely proud well I don't know where we go from here I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down this just doesn't get any better than this.
