Latest / Wpfavs - Your favourite WordPress news / Native AI in WordPress: No MCP, No Middleware
Transcript
- 0:13So Benjamin Intal, he, he posted this demo of a new experiment called Ahentic AI
- 0:17workspace.
- 0:19And, and someone literally gave it the most vague prompt, like,
- 0:22hey, swap these two book covers on the live store.
- 0:26And without any external MCP servers, no external middleware,
- 0:29just native WordPress APIs, it, it figured out the WooCommerce product IDs,
- 0:35went into the page, and performed the visual swap right there in the browser.
- 0:39Wait, no external MCP servers at all?
- 0:41Just, just straight browser to WordPress core APIs?
- 0:44Yeah, exactly.
- 0:45Benjamin Intal built it using pure WordPress APIs.
- 0:48And, and what makes that so fascinating is the architecture split we are seeing
- 0:52right now.
- 0:53On one side, you have CLI tools like Novamira CLI connecting things like Claude Code
- 0:58or Codex CLI through raw terminal shell commands on the server.
- 1:02On the other side, you have Ahentic operating natively in the browser through the
- 1:06new WordPress Abilities APIs.
- 1:09That, that distinction between raw server terminal execution and browser state
- 1:14manipulation is massive!
- 1:16Because if an AI agent tries to do raw database insertions on the server side,
- 1:21what happens?
- 1:22You open the block editor the next morning and boom, every single block gives you
- 1:27that terrifying invalid block, attempt block recovery warning.
- 1:30Oh yeah, block validation errors!
- 1:32Because raw SQL edits completely bypass Gutenberg's client side JavaScript rendering
- 1:36pipeline and parsing rules.
- 1:38Exactly.
- 1:39I mean, I, I tested some terminal workflows last week, and I have to tell you,
- 1:43running raw CLI SQL commands through an AI agent gave me complete,
- 1:47pure anxiety.
- 1:49You are essentially handing a super intelligent bot a direct line to your database
- 1:53tables.
- 1:54But when an agent operates through native WordPress Connector permissions and
- 1:58Abilities APIs inside the admin UI, it respects the hook hierarchy,
- 2:03it respects user capability checks, and it updates block states without corrupting
- 2:07the content structure.
- 2:09It is the difference between letting a mechanic dismantle your engine while you are
- 2:13driving down the highway versus having them use the dashboard controls!
- 2:16And, and when you look at how fragile the traditional plugin ecosystem currently is,
- 2:21this native API approach changes everything.
- 2:24Look at the data from the WP Goldmine analysis that came out recently.
- 2:28Twenty four percent of plugins in the ten thousand to one hundred thousand active
- 2:32install band have not been updated in over two years!
- 2:35Twenty four percent?
- 2:36That is over twelve hundred popular plugins sitting completely abandoned with real
- 2:40users on live sites.
- 2:42Twelve hundred and nine plugins, to be precise.
- 2:44And even in the one hundred thousand to one million active install band,
- 2:48ten point two percent are abandoned.
- 2:50We are talking about everyday utility plugins, like basic layout blocks,
- 2:54downgrade managers, simple bulk editors.
- 2:57And this is why native core APIs like the WordPress Connector API and the Abilities
- 3:02API are going to trigger a massive collapse in utility plugins.
- 3:08Why would a site builder install fifteen unmaintained single purpose utility plugins
- 3:13for bulk edits, meta tag adjustments, or custom field tweaks,
- 3:18when a single native AI workspace can hook into core APIs and execute all those
- 3:22tasks safely?
- 3:24Right, instead of hunting down a random bulk editing plugin that was abandoned in
- 3:28twenty twenty four, you just ask the native site agent to run a bulk update through
- 3:32authenticated core schema endpoints.
- 3:35Think about what that does to agency retainers!
- 3:38For the last decade, agencies charged clients five hundred dollars a month mostly to
- 3:43click update on twenty five plugins and manually tweak settings pages.
- 3:47That model is dead.
- 3:49The new agency retainer is all about architecture: configuring structured AI agent
- 3:53permissions, defining security boundaries, and setting up clean endpoint schemas so
- 3:58autonomous systems can manage the site safely.
- 4:00It completely shifts what site builders need to learn right now.
- 4:04For fifteen years, developer value meant building elaborate,
- 4:07custom admin settings pages with endless toggles and dropdowns for human eyes.
- 4:13Now, developer value is publishing clean, self-describing, agent-readable API
- 4:18definitions that an AI can read and invoke.
- 4:21It really turns the whole design pattern on its head.
- 4:24You build for machine execution first, with human permission guardrails,
- 4:28rather than building fancy visual controls for repetitive human clicking.
- 4:32Exactly.
- 4:33The user interface becomes conversational and programmatic,
- 4:37while the backend becomes a tightly regulated set of capabilities.
- 4:40That is the actual future of WordPress development.
