Latest / The Slippery Slope / When a Royal Commission Can’t Recognise Antisemitism

- 0:00So we're living in a time where truth isn't just ignored, it's
- 0:05treated like a threat. Governments, agencies and
- 0:09institutions that once claimed to protect us now seem more
- 0:14interested in protecting themselves.
- 0:17And when truth becomes becomes inconvenient, they don't correct
- 0:22the lies, they double down on them.
- 0:26And nowhere is that clearer than what we just witnessed in
- 0:30Australia's Royal Commission into anti Semitism, where a
- 0:36witness openly questioned Israel's right to exist and
- 0:41whether it is even a legitimate state.
- 0:45I'm Jay Fallon and this is the Slippery Slope podcast. down.
- 0:59So the witness was Rita Jabri Markwell.
- 1:03She's a solicitor and policy advisor for the Australian
- 1:07Muslim Advocacy Network. She presented A dehumanisation
- 1:12framework designed to classify hate speech.
- 1:16So under her model, speech directed at governments,
- 1:21militaries and political ideologies, they're protected,
- 1:26but speech targeting people based on race or religion
- 1:31breaches the framework. But during cross examination,
- 1:36the conversation exposed something, something far, far,
- 1:41far deeper. So Commissioner Virginia Bell
- 1:45asked asked her, Asked Markwell directly.
- 1:48Would you accept that there is a legitimacy, a legitimacy to the
- 1:53existence of the state of Israel?
- 1:56So Markwell's response was this, she says.
- 1:59I don't think I have a view particularly on the time of that
- 2:04declaration. Now remember when Israel was was
- 2:08reformed in 1948, the very next day, all of their Muslim
- 2:13neighbours, they've made this declaration that they were going
- 2:17to utterly destroy Israel. They lost the war, but you know,
- 2:22if, if the war and all the subsequent wars had have panned
- 2:25out for all these Muslim nations, they keep declaring
- 2:28they're going to destroy Israel. If it had a declare, if it had
- 2:30panned out for them, she'd have a completely different point of
- 2:33view. But they've lost every, every
- 2:36battle, virtually everything that their goals of utterly
- 2:42destroying Israel have never worked out.
- 2:44So therefore, she doesn't have a view particularly on the time of
- 2:47that declaration. But she goes on to say, but I
- 2:50don't think that any state that relies on unlawful occupation
- 2:55and apartheid and genocide could be said to be a legitimate state
- 3:00with that sink in. Like I said, if all those Muslim
- 3:04countries had won the war and had white Israel out and they
- 3:08were looking to utterly annihilate Israel, then their
- 3:12point of view would be completely different.
- 3:15Then she follows up with there needs to be serious thought as
- 3:20to how we fulfil every human's human rights in that region.
- 3:27This is not a neutral legal opinion, OK?
- 3:32This is a denial of Israel's legitimacy inside a royal
- 3:38Commission which is designed to investigate anti semitism.
- 3:45So you've got to look at what the UN has their claims for
- 3:51genocide. In September 2025, a UN
- 3:54Commission of inquiry found that genocide was occurring in Gaza.
- 4:00The allegation of genocide is rejected by Israel.
- 4:05The the issue is that activist interpretations are they were
- 4:10presented as established fact, while Israel's position is
- 4:16treated as relevant. And once you label a nation as
- 4:20genocidal, you've already justified denying its right to
- 4:26existence, its right to exist. So Zionism is defined by the
- 4:34Anti Defamation League. It is a movement of self
- 4:39determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their
- 4:44ancestral homeland of Israel. OK, so Councillor Nicholas
- 4:50Bender put to Markwell that her interpretation of Zionism would
- 4:54mean she viewed all Zionists as violent extremists.
- 4:59She rejected the suggestion, but her own language made the
- 5:03implication unavoidable. So she was also taken to an
- 5:09article by Maya Klein, who was a student, who said that she was
- 5:14kicked out of university accommodation because she was a
- 5:18Zionist. So Markwell's response was this,
- 5:22She says I was moved by her values, client's values of peace
- 5:26and coexistence. But when she talked about
- 5:29Zionism, she's moved by her peace and talk of peace and
- 5:34coexistence as long as it's what she wanted to hear.
- 5:37But as soon as she talked about Zionism, remember Zionism,
- 5:41Israel's right to exist, can't have the right to exist.
- 5:46So when she talked about that, I found that difficult because
- 5:50when I consider Zionism, this is Markwell speaking, when I
- 5:53consider Zionism as the Jewish national ideology which led to
- 5:58the creation of Israel in very violent circumstances, violent
- 6:02circumstances, you know, the Germans, the Nazis trying to
- 6:06kill, actually attempting genocide on the Jewish people,
- 6:12That was the violent circumstances which led to the
- 6:16recreation of Israel. She goes on to say all of that
- 6:19doesn't seem consistent with any, with the positive values
- 6:24that she was talking about that Klein was talking about.
- 6:28I haven't yet heard a Zionist explain to me how they
- 6:32incorporate Palestinians, Palestinian human dignity and
- 6:37human rights into the ideological framework.
- 6:41This is the problem. Zionism, the Jewish right to
- 6:44self determination is treated as inherently incompatible with
- 6:49human rights. That is not that's not analysis,
- 6:53that is that's ideological hostility.
- 6:58And it's all this right for this need for them to incorporate
- 7:05Palestinian human dignity. And yet the nation of Egypt,
- 7:11which also borders, you know, has control and in the past has
- 7:16had control over the Palestinian state, The same expectations
- 7:21isn't placed on the nation of Egypt, even though they are also
- 7:25a Muslim nation. And the Palestinians would very
- 7:30easily, you would think, be able to integrate into Egypt.
- 7:35But for some reason, those expectations aren't put on
- 7:38Egypt. No, it's all put on Israel.
- 7:42It's all up to little tiny Israel.
- 7:46A royal Commission into anti semitism is now platforming
- 7:51arguments that deny the legitimacy of the Jewish state,
- 7:57redefine Zionism as extremism and elevate activist narratives
- 8:04as fact. This is what happens when truth
- 8:08when truth becomes politically inconvenient, institutions start
- 8:13treating lies as valid perspectives.
- 8:18So a couple of scriptures that I've quoted that I have quoted
- 8:21before 1 Isaiah 5914 says that truth has stumbled in the
- 8:26streets and honesty cannot enter.
- 8:30This is what's happening in Australia.
- 8:32Truth has stumbled and lies are being welcomed into official
- 8:37enquiries. And John 320 says everyone who
- 8:40does evil hates the light. The light exposes hatred.
- 8:45But institutions today avoid the light because it forces them to
- 8:50confront uncomfortable truths, uncomfortable realities.
- 8:56So if if we've got a royal, a royal Commission and it cannot
- 9:02recognise anti semitism when it's staring them in the face in
- 9:08the shape of Markwell, then what hope does the average citizen
- 9:13have? This is how our society slides.
- 9:18This is how all societies slide. Not through sudden violence, but
- 9:22through the slow normalisation of lies.
- 9:27Once you start questioning Israel's right to exist and
- 9:32ignoring all the other facts surrounding it, ignoring all the
- 9:37other failures of the Muslim nations that surround Israel,
- 9:42ignoring all of their actions and then questioning Israel's
- 9:47right to exist. But you're not critiquing
- 9:49policy. You're not critiquing any of the
- 9:52other Muslim nations that have been at fault and that have
- 9:56attacked and constantly try to absolutely annihilate and wipe
- 10:01out Israel, but all you want to do is attack the existence of
- 10:04the Jewish homeland. That's not activism, that's
- 10:09hatred. That is anti Semitism and it's
- 10:13staring them in the face and they cannot even see it because
- 10:17they've embraced the lies. Markwell's embraced the lies,
- 10:22they've embraced Markwell. They embrace the lies and they
- 10:25double down on it. Truth.
- 10:28Truth should not be. It is not optional and it should
- 10:32never be optional. Truth is not subjective and
- 10:36truth is not a threat unless you're committed to the lie.
- 10:44Truth is not a threat unless you're committed to the lie.
- 10:48So when institutions start entertaining the idea that
- 10:52Israel might not be a legitimate state, they're not analysing
- 10:58anti semitism, they're enabling it.
- 11:06And that's the slippery slope that we're on.
- 11:09All this obviously is just my opinion.
- 11:11Let me know what you think. I'm Jay Fallon and thanks for
- 11:14listening to the Slippery Slope Podcast.
- 11:16They just. Feel the desire
