- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about labels and how we like to give
- 0:34labels to pretty much everything.
- 0:36We will talk about things that are good or bad or you know, I'm
- 0:40feeling down, I'm feeling up. We talk about how we have, you
- 0:45know, dysfunction in our lives and we label everything.
- 0:48We are just our clothes are constantly labels.
- 0:51We purchase things by labels. We are label driven creatures
- 0:56and the question is what benefits do we get from that?
- 1:00And are we choosing empowering labels as opposed to
- 1:03disempowering labels? So if you start to think about
- 1:06how these things show up in your life and you how you label
- 1:11yourself, like I even do it with the chickens.
- 1:13I will say, OK, I've got some chickens that are generally very
- 1:18happy hens, and then I've got some that are kind of grumpy
- 1:20hens and they're all just hens. And I look at this and I create
- 1:24a label for them. And then I will say, Oh well,
- 1:26she can't be. And this really shows up in the
- 1:28spring. For those of you who are regular
- 1:30followers, I have some chickens who are not allowed to sit on
- 1:34eggs to become moms because they have proven Marilyn is one of
- 1:39them. Miss Marilyn Monroe.
- 1:41She is a beautiful chicken and she got broody and she wanted to
- 1:44sit on eggs and I let her do it two years ago and she was a
- 1:48terrible mother. She basically hatched out her
- 1:51eggs and within a week and a half, two weeks, they usually
- 1:54spend probably a good two months with the chicks while they make
- 2:00sure that they're OK and they teach them how to do everything.
- 2:03Not Marilyn Monroe. She ditched her chicks in about
- 2:06a week and a half. They were too small.
- 2:08One of them got taken by a hawk because she wasn't taking care
- 2:11of it and I didn't realize how bad she was yet and she just
- 2:15would take off and leave them. So in fact, Delilah, those of
- 2:19you who are regular followers, Delilah is one of those chicks.
- 2:23And Delilah is very independent. And I would never let her sit on
- 2:28eggs either, just based on the fact that she is like Marilyn
- 2:31and we cannot have that happening.
- 2:34And so I have labeled her an unfit mother.
- 2:37And I mean it when I say it. She is an unfit mother.
- 2:40I have others that I label. Oh, well, she's such a sweetie
- 2:43and she's got such a great personality.
- 2:46And we could say these are genuinely true observations, but
- 2:49they are labels. And I'm very conscientious of
- 2:52putting labels on people because once you start doing that or on
- 2:56chickens or on dogs or anything else, well, we, we start living
- 3:01into that as well as we start creating more and more and more
- 3:05of those situations. And before you know it, we're
- 3:07disqualifying whether or not we want something, we want to try
- 3:10it. Like I might say, I hate peas,
- 3:13which is a fact in life. But the truth is, I don't hate
- 3:17all peas. I just hate certain kinds of
- 3:19peas. But I, I did not know that
- 3:22because for much of my life I labeled it as peas suck.
- 3:26I hate peas and I wouldn't even try them.
- 3:29So I am very aware of how these labels affect me.
- 3:34And I wanted to bring this up to you because I think it's I think
- 3:37it's something that we have to often address in ourselves and
- 3:41take inventory on like how many labels do I have for myself?
- 3:45If I had to describe myself, how would I do it?
- 3:48So if you take this little exercise and you sit down and
- 3:50you say I am going to have to describe myself to people that
- 3:55don't know me, let's pretend I'm going to go for an interview
- 3:59somewhere, whatever it is to be, you know, added to some club or
- 4:03whatever, make something up. But I'm going to sit down and
- 4:05I'm going to have to give myself because the rules are I give
- 4:08myself 20 labels. And what would those labels be?
- 4:14And how hard is of an exercise is this to do?
- 4:17Well, I'll tell you, it's very hard because as we sit and we
- 4:20look and we start to think about these labels on ourselves, we
- 4:24have to say, OK, this is hard. I have a hard time with this
- 4:29particular exercise. What am I thinking about myself?
- 4:33And I know when I do this and I check in with it a lot because
- 4:37I've especially categorically, if I divide it out and I say,
- 4:40well, how would I do this if I was just talking about me as a
- 4:42mom or me as a life partner or me as a coach or me as a trainer
- 4:50or a creative, and I did this exercise for each one of my
- 4:54categories, How would I describe myself?
- 4:56What are the labels that I put on myself?
- 4:58Are they all empowering? And when you do this exercise,
- 5:02here's the crazy part. Most people sit and try, they
- 5:05struggle because they want to do it all positive.
- 5:07And I'm saying, well, I'm just saying, what would you say?
- 5:11And inherently you want to say all positive things, but that's
- 5:14not what's true in your head. A lot of negative things come
- 5:18up. So when you do the exercise the
- 5:19first time you do it, do it as a brain dump where you're just
- 5:23saying, what is the truth Now nobody else has to see this but
- 5:26you. So do the exercise just as a
- 5:28brain dump to see what am I truly thinking of myself?
- 5:32And then you can go back and say, OK, now I want to convert
- 5:34this into positives. And this is what I choose to
- 5:36believe and I'm going to work on this moving forward.
- 5:39But it's a very enlightening exercise.
- 5:41So go do your label exercise, figure out what you think and I
- 5:46will see you at guys tomorrow. Hope you have a very blessed
- 5:49day. Bye.
