- 0:09Speaker 1: What's going on? Everybody?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome in to another episode of the Checko Daily. Andrew
- 0:14Speaker 2: decheco here Eagles beat reporter friendsidethebirds dot Com. I want
- 0:19Speaker 2: to get some housekeeping items out of the way, and
- 0:22Speaker 2: then today's podcast is going to be about three undrafted
- 0:26Speaker 2: free agents that, in my estimation before having seen them
- 0:29Speaker 2: take a snap, have the best chance to make the
- 0:33Speaker 2: Eagles fifty three man roster. But this goes back to
- 0:37Speaker 2: Friday's transaction. To no surprise, the Eagles use their international
- 0:42Speaker 2: player pathway exemption on rookie defensive linemen who r Bernard,
- 0:47Speaker 2: so he'll be protected.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And that means that Joshua.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Weiru, the other eligible ipp player from Kenya, does in
- 0:58Speaker 2: fact count against the eagles ninety man roster, so if
- 1:03Speaker 2: he doesn't make it, he'll be subjected to waivers. And
- 1:06Speaker 2: that is sort of something to put a bow on that,
- 1:10Speaker 2: because I know that there were some who were curious
- 1:12Speaker 2: about that. And the Eagles also made a small roster
- 1:18Speaker 2: move on Tuesday. They waved injured rookie defensive back Tucker
- 1:26Speaker 2: Large out of Washington State. Began his career at South
- 1:29Speaker 2: Dakota State, and he would have had Uphill climb to
- 1:34Speaker 2: make the roster, but he will be waved injured. I
- 1:37Speaker 2: did see him standing by the team, not participating in
- 1:42Speaker 2: the warm ups, and I zoomed in and it was
- 1:45Speaker 2: number thirty seven that would be Tucker Large.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So it would appear that he was dealing with something
- 1:53Speaker 1: even before the practice.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I'm not certain about that, but they signed linebacker Isaiah
- 1:58Speaker 2: King out of Idaho, productive tackler. He'll be in contention
- 2:04Speaker 2: with Deontay Lawson and Chance Campbell for what could be
- 2:08Speaker 2: a fifth and final spot in the linebacking pecking order
- 2:11Speaker 2: on the fifty three.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We'll have to see about that.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But Isaiah King was among the players who participated in
- 2:20Speaker 2: the rookie mini camp on a tryout basis, so good
- 2:23Speaker 2: story there. He was able to earn his ticket to
- 2:27Speaker 2: the ninety man roster and get to training camp. The
- 2:31Speaker 2: Eagles are a team that gives tryout players a good opportunity,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and I look back to twenty twenty four. Cornerback Sean
- 2:38Speaker 2: Stevens out of Farris State had a productive rookie Mini
- 2:42Speaker 2: camp and was signed to the ninety man roster last season.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Last spring, it was wide receiver Giles Jackson from Washington
- 2:53Speaker 2: he stood out and was able to land a contract
- 2:58Speaker 2: out of that, and then this year Isaiah King becomes
- 3:00Speaker 2: the third player in as many years. The Eagles will
- 3:03Speaker 2: give opportunities to players if you warrant the game day elevation,
- 3:11Speaker 2: if you're on the practice squad, if you're in training camp,
- 3:14Speaker 2: if you're at bottom of the roster, guy you earn
- 3:17Speaker 2: those reps and you have to make your mark during
- 3:19Speaker 2: the developmental period and in rookie mini camp, they give
- 3:23Speaker 2: tryout players a fair opportunity, and it just so happened
- 3:27Speaker 2: they had a roster spot available, unfortunately for Tucker Largs
- 3:30Speaker 2: who was injured, and Isaiah King is the newest member
- 3:34Speaker 2: of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles also announce some front
- 3:40Speaker 2: office maneuvering today, and we'll put that into context here.
- 3:48Speaker 2: They announced some changes to the football operations scatting and
- 3:51Speaker 2: sports Medicine and Performance departments. Football Operations, Adam Berry becomes
- 3:56Speaker 2: the assistant general manager. He replaces Alec Hallaby, who is
- 4:01Speaker 2: leaving for external opportunities after being with the team for
- 4:04Speaker 2: seventeen years.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Began as an intern.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Really respect alex path to the NFL and up through
- 4:12Speaker 2: the ranks. Hard working individual and brilliant, brilliant mind. Dan
- 4:18Speaker 2: Ryan is the Senior Director of Team Operations, Matt Leo,
- 4:22Speaker 2: Director of Player Engagement. I want to circle back on
- 4:24Speaker 2: Matt Leo in a moment. Grant Writer, Director of Football Administration,
- 4:29Speaker 2: Zachary Stever, Director of Football Research and Strategy, Zach Drapin
- 4:34Speaker 2: Assistant Director of Personnel Strategy, Isabelle Pantel senior quantitative quantitative.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Analyst, Marlon Sanders video manager.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And then they have two new hires Clara Montenegro de
- 4:50Speaker 2: Burke player personnel and football operations coordinator and Samantha Harvey
- 4:55Speaker 2: video assistant. Additions to scouting that are notable Joe Douglas
- 5:00Speaker 2: Senior VP of Player Personnel, Phil bay A, VP of
- 5:04Speaker 2: Player Personnel, Alan Walking, VP of Football Operations and Strategic Initiatives.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And a new hire that I find to be particularly
- 5:14Speaker 2: fascinating is Mike mccagning mccagnan personnel executive if you may
- 5:20Speaker 2: remember him as a one time general manager with the
- 5:23Speaker 2: New York Jets from twenty fifteen to I believe twenty nineteen.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So those are some of the front office maneuvers from today,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and I wanted to circle back on Matt Leo, Because
- 5:38Speaker 2: Matt Leo has had a really really interesting journey to
- 5:42Speaker 2: get to coaching. Remember back in twenty twenty through twenty
- 5:47Speaker 2: twenty two, he was a defensive end for the Eagles
- 5:49Speaker 2: via the International Player Pathway program. He was on the
- 5:52Speaker 2: practice squad all of those years. Then in twenty twenty three,
- 5:56Speaker 2: after he leaves football, he's a defensive and football op
- 6:00Speaker 2: operations assistant with the Eagles, And in twenty twenty four
- 6:03Speaker 2: and twenty twenty five he was a player development assistant
- 6:06Speaker 2: key in that area along with Connor barw When both
- 6:09Speaker 2: of those names deserve a lot of credit for what
- 6:12Speaker 2: they've done behind the scenes, bringing a lot of young
- 6:14Speaker 2: players along. And then in twenty twenty six, matt Leo
- 6:18Speaker 2: becomes the director of player Engagement. By all accounts, well
- 6:23Speaker 2: well deserved and a really good story for Matt Leo,
- 6:27Speaker 2: but also for those who work above him to develop
- 6:30Speaker 2: the coaches under there and prepare them for greater opportunities.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I think really speaks volumes of the Eagles organization. So
- 6:40Speaker 2: looking at the undrafted free agents, I go back to
- 6:45Speaker 2: two thousand and one when the Eagles kept players who
- 6:48Speaker 2: you probably aren't going to remember in safety Terrace Carrol
- 6:51Speaker 2: Terrence Carroll from Oregon State and cornerback Daryl Crutchfield out
- 6:55Speaker 2: of Clemson. This is no notes for me right now.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I am just wired to remember these things. I cover
- 7:01Speaker 2: the team and I try to make sure that I
- 7:03Speaker 2: have every angle covered here. But I do remember both
- 7:08Speaker 2: of those players. In two thousand and two, there was
- 7:12Speaker 2: Justin Ina, the linebacker out at BYU, and Artist Hicks,
- 7:16Speaker 2: the offensive lineman who ended up starting for the Eagles
- 7:19Speaker 2: down the line. He started in Super Bowl thirty nine,
- 7:21Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, at guard and he ended up
- 7:25Speaker 2: going to the Vikings. I believe after that in two
- 7:27Speaker 2: thousand and three, that might be the best undrafted free
- 7:31Speaker 2: agent class, or it really speaks to the shaped Eagles
- 7:34Speaker 2: roster was.
- 7:34Speaker 1: In back then.
- 7:35Speaker 2: But you had Roderick Hould the cornerback out of Auburn.
- 7:38Speaker 2: You had defensive tackle Sam Rayburn out of drawing a
- 7:42Speaker 2: blank here, but you had Alonzo Ephram who was a
- 7:47Speaker 2: center at Alabama. You had wide receiver Greg Lewis who
- 7:54Speaker 2: was the wide receiver from Illinois.
- 7:56Speaker 1: He played with.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Aaron moorehead and Brandon Lloyd there.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And Reno Mahe.
- 8:00Speaker 2: The running back slash wide receiver out of BYU and
- 8:05Speaker 2: Quentin Michael of course, who ended up starting for the
- 8:07Speaker 2: Eagles down the line there at safety. Was a really
- 8:10Speaker 2: really underrated player and hit really hard, carved his nition
- 8:15Speaker 2: special teams initially, but he was probably the best example,
- 8:20Speaker 2: one of the better examples that I can recall in
- 8:22Speaker 2: Eagles history as far as undrafted free agents go. Then
- 8:25Speaker 2: there's other players that you're not going to remember, Like
- 8:28Speaker 2: in two thousand and five there was a safety named
- 8:30Speaker 2: Jeremy Thornberg, and I believe that was the same year
- 8:34Speaker 2: that Steven Spock the tight end hung on. There's other
- 8:39Speaker 2: examples that are escaping me, but you look at wise
- 8:44Speaker 2: we fast forward things to recent years with the Eagles.
- 8:47Speaker 2: In twenty twenty one, you had Jack Stole. In twenty
- 8:52Speaker 2: twenty two, you had Reed Blankenship and Josh job. In
- 8:56Speaker 2: twenty twenty five you had Darius Cooper. In twenty twenty
- 9:03Speaker 2: three you had Eli Rix the corner. And so the
- 9:07Speaker 2: Eagles have a rich history of really finding these gems
- 9:11Speaker 2: that slip through the cracks. For whatever reason, they're left
- 9:16Speaker 2: out on the outside looking in after the draft, and
- 9:19Speaker 2: the Eagles see a lot of value.
- 9:20Speaker 1: They leave no stone unturned.
- 9:22Speaker 2: They bring them in and they much like I said
- 9:24Speaker 2: about the tryout players, they give undrafted rookies an opportunity.
- 9:29Speaker 2: There's the developmental period at the end of training camp
- 9:32Speaker 2: practices that those players and rookies are really they handle
- 9:38Speaker 2: all of those snaps because they don't get a ton
- 9:40Speaker 2: of reps in training camp.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That's kind of how that works.
- 9:43Speaker 2: But they give them opportunities in the preseason and they
- 9:46Speaker 2: base every they take everything into account, and then it's
- 9:49Speaker 2: up to those players who reps are really sporadic when
- 9:52Speaker 2: you're that far down the depth chart to take advantage
- 9:55Speaker 2: of it. And last season last summer, Darius Cooper did
- 9:59Speaker 2: just that.
- 10:00Speaker 1: He made seemingly a play.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Every day and certainly earned his way onto the Eagles roster.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But let's look at this group, and this is going
- 10:09Speaker 2: to be a hard roster to crack, as you saw
- 10:12Speaker 2: me go through or you heard me go through my
- 10:15Speaker 2: way too early Eagles fifty three man roster projection, So
- 10:19Speaker 2: I mean, spots are at a premium here.
- 10:21Speaker 1: But the Eagles have proven over the years.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I think maybe twenty twenty was the only year where
- 10:27Speaker 2: not a single undrafted free agent made the Eagles fifty.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Three man roster.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So the history and the numbers and the data would
- 10:36Speaker 2: support the notion that some of these guys are going
- 10:39Speaker 2: to have a really good shot. One of them would
- 10:41Speaker 2: appear to be a shoe in. But as I kind
- 10:45Speaker 2: of went through my fifty three man roster, doesn't necessarily
- 10:47Speaker 2: mean that he would make the initial fifty three man roster.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And I'm talking about.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Long snapper Rocco Underwood, who headlines this list. He had
- 10:56Speaker 2: a very productive and active career at the University of Florida,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and the Eagles don't have a long snapper on the
- 11:04Speaker 2: roster right now. They did not resign Charlie Hewlett cal
- 11:08Speaker 2: Ottamitas is with the Pittsburgh Steelers. There were other names
- 11:11Speaker 2: that could have been available in free agency that the
- 11:13Speaker 2: Eagles opted not to pursue. They were poking around some
- 11:17Speaker 2: of the impending draftees. In terms of Spencer Triplett from
- 11:23Speaker 2: UNC Garrison, I'm john a blank on his last name,
- 11:29Speaker 2: but he was at He's from BYU, and I know
- 11:32Speaker 2: Michael Clay was there. And then you had Tyler Grzanski
- 11:37Speaker 2: from Penn State, who the Eagles had at their local
- 11:39Speaker 2: pro day. So there were a number of names of
- 11:42Speaker 2: long snappers enough to suggest that they might be trying
- 11:45Speaker 2: to go younger there more cost effective, and they tend
- 11:49Speaker 2: to look at whenever they get a long snapper, they
- 11:51Speaker 2: tend to have a pretty lengthy career Mike Bartrump, John Dorenboss,
- 11:56Speaker 2: Rick Lovado, and getting a young player like that, not
- 11:59Speaker 2: only are they going to be cost controlled when you're
- 12:01Speaker 2: looking at how the roster is going to shape up,
- 12:05Speaker 2: but they also project out to have a longer career
- 12:09Speaker 2: and you provide a little bit more stability there.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Roco Underwood is a player that he appeared in fifty
- 12:16Speaker 2: games for Florida. He was a mainstay on their special
- 12:19Speaker 2: teams units. Good size at six three two thirty one,
- 12:23Speaker 2: which would bode well when you have to get down
- 12:25Speaker 2: the field and make tackles. He won the twenty twenty
- 12:28Speaker 2: four Patrick Mentley Award and he qualified as a semi
- 12:30Speaker 2: finalist last year. He totaled one hundred and three snaps
- 12:35Speaker 2: in twenty twenty five, fifty two on punk coverage and
- 12:38Speaker 2: another fifty one on field goals and extra points. Rocco
- 12:41Speaker 2: Underwood would be one player that I would imagine has
- 12:45Speaker 2: a better than average shot at sticking. Now, the Eagles
- 12:48Speaker 2: could also opt to go with no long snapper on
- 12:52Speaker 2: their initial fifty three and bank on getting Roco Underwood
- 12:55Speaker 2: on the practice squad and elevating him and then making
- 12:58Speaker 2: that decision after the elevations expire, which is after three games.
- 13:03Speaker 2: You may remember that they had Charlie Hewitt on the
- 13:06Speaker 2: practice squad late in the season that are able to
- 13:08Speaker 2: kind of do some roster gymnastics, So it's not out
- 13:10Speaker 2: of the realm with possibility, but right now, all things equal,
- 13:13Speaker 2: I think Roca Underwood leads this UDFA class with the
- 13:17Speaker 2: best chances of sticking. Linebacker Deonte Lawson is another player
- 13:22Speaker 2: that I've mentioned, and I actually had him on my
- 13:24Speaker 2: way too early fifty three man roster as the fifth
- 13:28Speaker 2: and final linebacker. Look, he's twenty three, started forty one
- 13:31Speaker 2: games at Alabama fifteen last season. I thought he was
- 13:36Speaker 2: a Day three selection all day long. I was shocked,
- 13:39Speaker 2: frankly that he wasn't picked. Now, he did have the
- 13:42Speaker 2: ACL injury in twenty twenty four, he did battle some
- 13:46Speaker 2: nagging injuries during his career at Alabama, and he's undersized
- 13:49Speaker 2: at two twenty six, so perhaps that factored in a
- 13:52Speaker 2: little bit. But when you look at starting forty one
- 13:54Speaker 2: games at a premiere program in Alabama, you have athleticism.
- 13:59Speaker 1: The movement is I would say.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's something that I believe will lend itself to being
- 14:07Speaker 2: a preseason standout. And while he doesn't have necessarily the
- 14:11Speaker 2: sideline of sideline range, he does move well in space.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Then you look at his season that he had.
- 14:17Speaker 2: He was a second team All SEC selection in twenty
- 14:20Speaker 2: twenty five, eighty nine tackles, four and a half for loss,
- 14:23Speaker 2: a second a half, four passes defended, and a pair
- 14:26Speaker 2: of force fumbles. So I think with him it comes
- 14:29Speaker 2: down to injury and maybe he was sort of knocked
- 14:32Speaker 2: a little bit on his size. But I think that
- 14:34Speaker 2: there's a world in which the Eagles could be compelled
- 14:37Speaker 2: to carry five linebackers as long as one of those.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Players really emerges.
- 14:43Speaker 2: And Chance Campbell, it's been documented that he was a
- 14:46Speaker 2: key player on the scout team. I mentioned in the
- 14:50Speaker 2: podcast on Tuesday that he's a player that you're going
- 14:53Speaker 2: to want to highlight during training camp. And Isaiah King undrafted,
- 14:58Speaker 2: a guy who I mentioned was signed off of a
- 15:01Speaker 2: rookie tryout. He was a productive player in college. You
- 15:04Speaker 2: can never count out anyone in these scenarios. Chandler Martin,
- 15:09Speaker 2: they signed to a two year deal. He has a
- 15:11Speaker 2: little bit of NFL experience, so if any of those
- 15:14Speaker 2: players are able to jump out, I could see the
- 15:17Speaker 2: Eagles keeping five linebackers.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 15:24Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 15:26Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 15:31Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 15:35Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 15:38Speaker 3: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 15:47Speaker 3: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 15:50Speaker 3: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 15:54Speaker 3: at the fairest prices, so whether you're stocking up for
- 15:57Speaker 3: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrate the big win,

- 16:04Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 16:09Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Camedn Apothecary Top Quality Cannabis
- 16:14Speaker 3: great prices and an experience made for Philly fans twenty one.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And then.
- 16:21Speaker 2: The final player I wanted to talk about was tight
- 16:25Speaker 2: end dayclon Wright. And I'm sure that that is of
- 16:28Speaker 2: no surprise to listeners of this podcast, because well, I
- 16:31Speaker 2: had him making my way to early fifty three man
- 16:36Speaker 2: roster as the fourth tight end. And look, this is
- 16:40Speaker 2: a player that, again I had a six round grade on.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I was shocked that he slipped through the cracks and
- 16:47Speaker 2: didn't hear his name called.
- 16:49Speaker 1: But I mean, this is a player that was really
- 16:52Speaker 1: explosive last season at Ole Miss.
- 16:55Speaker 2: He had thirty nine catches for six hundred and thirty
- 16:58Speaker 2: five yards and five touchdowns, a second team All SEC selection.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Good size at six four two forty six, toughness and
- 17:06Speaker 2: versatility really stands out when you watched Old Miss last season.
- 17:10Speaker 2: He does have a vertical element and dynamic qualities. It's
- 17:14Speaker 2: twenty two years old, good ball skills. Not necessarily the
- 17:18Speaker 2: best blocker in the world, but he can certainly do it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: He's capable.
- 17:22Speaker 2: And when you factor all of that into the mix here, well,
- 17:28Speaker 2: I mean, would you want to keep a Johnny munt
- 17:31Speaker 2: Over a DAYK one? Right if Daikwon Wright has a
- 17:34Speaker 2: solid preseason, and he was already a Day three consideration.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I mean, he was widely viewed.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I should say as a Day three option, you're fresh
- 17:45Speaker 2: off the draft. You're only months removed by the time
- 17:47Speaker 2: you have to make your roster decisions.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So all it takes is a team.
- 17:51Speaker 2: That was a little higher on him, maybe than some others,
- 17:54Speaker 2: to put a waiver claim in. And as a young
- 17:57Speaker 2: player with developmental qualities, I think that he would provide
- 18:01Speaker 2: more value than a Johnny Munt. Johnny Munt is an
- 18:04Speaker 2: older player, one dimensional player, very affective blocker. But are
- 18:08Speaker 2: there going to be teams clamoring for Johnny Munt if
- 18:11Speaker 2: the Eagles part ways with him, and could you get
- 18:14Speaker 2: him on the practice squad and elevate him and then
- 18:16Speaker 2: figure out your plan moving forward after those.
- 18:21Speaker 1: After you've reached the limit on those elevations.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I mean, I think you'd lean towards keeping the younger player,
- 18:27Speaker 2: but he has to go out there and obviously earn it.
- 18:30Speaker 2: We haven't seen him take a snap yet, But I'm
- 18:32Speaker 2: going off solely college production and projected upside. I would
- 18:36Speaker 2: say that day Kwon Wright has a good shot because
- 18:40Speaker 2: besides Dallas Goddard and Eli Stowers. I had Cameron Loto
- 18:45Speaker 2: as another tight end making the roster. There's not a
- 18:48Speaker 2: lot of definitive answers or players that you look at
- 18:52Speaker 2: and say they are locks besides Dallas godd Or and
- 18:55Speaker 2: Eli Stowers, so day Kwon Wright could have a good
- 18:58Speaker 2: opportunity to elbow his way into the roster consideration. I
- 19:04Speaker 2: like talking about these off the beaten path stories of
- 19:07Speaker 2: Eagles in years past and going through the undrafted free
- 19:11Speaker 2: agent going through the list and trying to identify players.
- 19:16Speaker 1: That I believe had or have a.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Better than average shot, or you can see a path.
- 19:21Speaker 2: You don't necessarily have to squint to see it. But
- 19:25Speaker 2: it's interesting and relevant because the Eagles, as I outlined,
- 19:29Speaker 2: they do take a lot of shots and give undrafted
- 19:34Speaker 2: players equal opportunity to play their way into a roster spot.
- 19:40Speaker 2: And maybe not every place is like that around the NFL.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Obviously I wouldn't know I cover the Eagles, but presumably
- 19:47Speaker 2: not every place gives undrafted players the same opportunity as
- 19:51Speaker 2: draft picks and free agent additions, but the Eagles do,
- 19:54Speaker 2: and they have a couple names on this list that
- 19:56Speaker 2: I find to be particularly intriguing, which prompted me to
- 19:59Speaker 2: do this.
- 20:00Speaker 1: But with that, I leave you with that, and that's
- 20:03Speaker 1: gonna do it.
- 20:04Speaker 2: For this edition of The Checko Daily, I'm Andrew Decheco
- 20:08Speaker 2: and I'll catch you all on the next one.
