- 0:02This is an unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:11episodes three sixty three through three sixty five. Chopper is furious, hogbacks,
- 0:18evil medical practices, oars, roars, come out, straw Hat Crew,
- 0:24and Lufy is the enemy the Ultimate Zombie versus the straw Hat Crew. In
- 0:32these episodes, Chopper decides that he is going to lay a smack down,
- 0:37but he really doesn't get to do as much as I was hoping. And
- 0:43as far as Lufy facing off with the whole straw Hat crew, it's mostly
- 0:48sangy because everybody else is just collateral damage. Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome
- 1:15to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to the
- 1:19One Piece crew for commissioning this episode. I really like, I do not
- 1:26know what to expect going forward, because there have been a couple of jukes
- 1:30to the left with the way things have gone, and yet I have been
- 1:34able to predict certain stuff. So I'm really interested to see like the direction
- 1:41that we go in for certain things. I was really I'm gonna talk about
- 1:49like some favorite moments real quick, you guys. My number one favorite moment
- 1:53in all of this was oos up making the same assumption that I did.
- 2:00We have a moment when Ores is sicked on the one piece crew, and
- 2:06the way Hogback has managed him or not Maria Maria has managed him is he
- 2:12has taped the wanted posters to Ores' forearm so that he can reference them and
- 2:19to figure out who he needs to target. And I was also thinking that
- 2:27maybe the fact that Sangie's poster is not an actual photo would slow him down,
- 2:34but I failed to think through the way that Lufy seems to perceive human
- 2:42beings in a completely like inaccurate way. You guys, there's a there is
- 2:46a an snl skits. Y'all. Remember this story about a fresco of Jesus
- 2:54in an Italian church and this old lady claims to be like a professional restorer
- 3:02or at least to be experienced, if not a professional, and they allowed
- 3:07her to restore this like ancient fresco that was like six hundred years old,
- 3:17and she made it into this bizarre like I can't even think of like an
- 3:29adequate word. There's something like almost dolliesque about how horrifying the face became after
- 3:38she handled it. And then she demanded to be paid after like ruining this
- 3:45priceless work of religious art, she was like, okay, you owe me
- 3:50like seven hundred dollars. So anyway, there is an SNL skit where Kate
- 3:54McKinnon pretends to be that woman and they establish over the course of the skit
- 4:03that she just doesn't see human beings right, and that's why she painted him
- 4:09that way, because that's how she sees him. And she starts to describe
- 4:12Seth or not Seth mcfarlums and Seth whatever his name is, the host of
- 4:16their weekend Update, and she is describing him in these bizarre terms, and
- 4:25eventually he's like, Okay, you just don't see people, right, That's
- 4:28what's going on here. And this is what Lufy is experiencing, I think.
- 4:35And it's not even like I would argue that despite the fact that he
- 4:42cannot see their physical characteristics at all. Clearly, the fact that Lufy was
- 4:49able to like recognize Zoro in a way inside the zombie that has Zoro in
- 4:56it, and the fact that he's able to recognize Sean you hear from this
- 5:00like kind of shitty cartoonist drawing almost makes me want to be like, maybe
- 5:05Lufy sees more clearly than all of us. Maybe he can see like right
- 5:10to the heart of a person, maybe he can seem like an essence more
- 5:14and that the physical just doesn't matter to him the way that it gets us
- 5:18all hung up. You know, he's free of that. He's elevated.
- 5:21There is something about Lufy that has moved on to the next plane of consciousness
- 5:29and he has become more enlightened and can see us for who we are instead
- 5:34of what we look like. Do I think that's actually true? Yes?
- 5:40I do. I have chosen to think that, So that's going to be
- 5:45what I go with from now on. Guys, is that Lufy just fucking
- 5:47sees correctly somehow, And if you can prove me wrong, be my guests.
- 5:55But I will not listen to you because this is what I've decided.
- 5:59So anyway, that moment where he says like, this looks just like you,
- 6:03honestly, when he's looking from the poster to Sanji, I was kind
- 6:06of like, that poster's pretty close, like I don't know if that's going
- 6:12to hold him back, And then he says it looks just like you,
- 6:15and I was like, oh my god, I fucking should have known,
- 6:18and then there is a moment that I was sort of surprised by because I
- 6:23thought that this was going to be an issue for other reasons, and this
- 6:28is that he looks at the poster of Usap, who is the Soghi King
- 6:35in this poster. He has his mask on. And what I was thinking
- 6:41was that Oars would leave Usap alone because Usap doesn't have the mask on when
- 6:47he's confronting Oars. But it seems like Oars does recognize that Usap is the
- 6:56same guy, which begs the question how he can tell when Lufy himself couldn't
- 7:02tell. That was the only thing that I was sort of like, I
- 7:05want him to be unable to discover that Usup is Sniper King the same way
- 7:13that Lufy was like, for some reason, completely blind to that fact.
- 7:18And there's no moment of consideration. When he's looking at his forearm and chasing
- 7:25Usup, he sees the so and he just keeps like chasing him, and
- 7:29there's no moment of is that the same guy questioning to himself? You know,
- 7:33because he talks to himself a lot and sort of second guesses many things.
- 7:39And I thought that was what we were going to have, would be
- 7:41like some moment of him realizing, oh, I'm chasing a wrong guy.
- 7:45But that never seems to happen, and I kind of wish it did,
- 7:48because if it were to free up Usop at least from the list of people
- 7:57that he thinks he has to target, then maybe usup could have a moment
- 8:01here where he is able to like step in and I don't know that,
- 8:05you know, he can necessarily take on ors, but he might be able
- 8:11to fly under the radar a little bit more and get something done because he's
- 8:16not being zeroed in on the same way. But anyway, that is not
- 8:22how that goes. So let's start things off with Chopper is furious and we
- 8:28get this whole like storyline. Oh my god, you guys, I just
- 8:31started playing the video on Funimation and why is it playing an AD? I
- 8:39pay the premium service fee and I have an AD that shouldn't be happening.
- 8:46This is the first time that's happened. I'm disgusted. Anyway, So this
- 8:52storyline with you know what's going on with Oh my god, you guys,
- 9:00it's doing it again. It's asking me like to choose my AD experience.
- 9:07What the fuck you guys, I pay for this. Oh oh, I'm
- 9:15not logged in, okay, Jesus Christ. I was logged in when I
- 9:20was watching the show from this exact same browser window an hour ago. But
- 9:24I guess if you just want to be a fucking piece of shit, which
- 9:28they clearly love being, I am really over Funimation, y'all. I know
- 9:33everybody's lamenting the fact that they're about to be pulled into crunchy roll, and
- 9:37I'm sure there are downsides to that, but is crunchy roll worse than this?
- 9:41Because I feel like that would be a tough thing to do. I'm
- 9:46sorry everybody who's come to listen to one piece and not to listen to me
- 9:48bitch about Funimation, but you know, things are things. I don't plan
- 9:56on certain things either, and what are we going to do? So anyway,
- 10:01this, uh, the whole episode centers around the confrontation between our little
- 10:11crew, but mostly Chopper with doctor Hogback and with the story of Chin Chinjr.
- 10:20Whose name I always start to get wrong. And this is about what
- 10:28I was sort of expecting. I'll be honest, but I was thinking that
- 10:35it might even be worse than it turned out to be. So I will
- 10:39give a little bit of leeway on this. It's uh, let's see.
- 10:43Florian says, Oh, I thought someone in the discord said it was on
- 10:48Hulu now too. Yeah it is, but I tested it out and I
- 10:52had forgotten that Hulu does this. But it loses its spot when I'm trying
- 10:56to watch it during a recording, and it will the screen will go black,
- 11:01and then when I start to press play again, if I pause it,
- 11:05it won't pick up where I left off. It'll like go back to
- 11:07the beginning. So as much as Hulu is better for viewing on my television,
- 11:11it is not better for recording. So I'm sticking with crunchy roll and
- 11:16just watching sitting at my computer, which is not my favorite, but sometimes
- 11:20you just gotta do what you gotta do. Gus says, crunchy Roll is
- 11:24much better. I'm glad Funimation is getting pulled in. Yeah. I really
- 11:28hope that, like, because they I keep being told that it's happening and
- 11:31that there's soon going to be one unit, but it's been two years since
- 11:35I was assured of that and that has not yet materialized. So pick up
- 11:39the pace crunchy Roll all right anyway, So I hope I'm saying her name
- 11:48right, guys, because I feel like I keep getting it wrong. Shinjury
- 11:52is that you say her name. The storyline with her is about as basic
- 12:01as it looked like it was gonna be from the moment they stumble onto that
- 12:07secret room, and I was a little disappointed that it was as straightforward as
- 12:13it looked, because I was like thinking there might be some kind of more
- 12:18of a twist or something. And you guys know that I was sort of
- 12:22thinking that it was probably like the perverts room, the Absalom's room, because
- 12:26he is such a peeping tom. But I also should have realized that despite
- 12:31the fact that he's a major purv, there's no indicator that he is interested
- 12:35in going after her. He is full throated going after Nami. So why
- 12:41would he be so worshipful and not really like pay her the time of day
- 12:46when he's around her all the time, you know. So it just the
- 12:52room that they stumbled onto that had all of the like photos of Shinjury when
- 12:58she was alive as an actress, and all of the different the articles about
- 13:07the accident and everything. That room belongs to doctor Hogback, who was like
- 13:13obsessed with her and evidently she was like a really sweet person as well,
- 13:22which I found genuinely funny that he Sindry, Sindry, thank you, Florian.
- 13:31I found it really funny that doctor Hogback even bothers to talk about her
- 13:33being a good person, because he genuinely doesn't seem to really get any He
- 13:43doesn't seem to understand what being a good person even is or care. Based
- 13:46on the conversation that he has with Chopper, Chopper is just like you know,
- 13:54he laughs at Chopper and calls him idealistic and naive even all of this
- 14:00stuff. But then he's like, Sindury was so good and sweet and generous
- 14:05and kind, And I was like, and why would you care about any
- 14:09of that? You just don't seem to give a shit about like morality,
- 14:15so I don't feel like you'd value that. And then I started to realize
- 14:20that I think I'm supposed to. So this is something that's really insidious,
- 14:28and I am going to address it here, and I will fully admit that
- 14:33I don't know for a fact this is the case, but I need to
- 14:37just put it out there because it was in my brain and made me suspicious.
- 14:41So what I had sort of thought might have happened was that Sindury's accident
- 14:50wasn't an accident, and that we would find out that Hogback had actually killed
- 14:56her explicitly so that he couldn't make her to a zombie. And it seems
- 15:03like that's not the case. It seems like it was a genuine accident,
- 15:05and he finds out about it and decides to take matters into his own hands,
- 15:09and Chopper very rightfully is like, consent much, No, okay.
- 15:16But the thing that I had also considered was that he was actively rejected by
- 15:24her, and that she was going to be maybe not like an incredible model
- 15:33of morality and every feminine virtue. Maybe she was gorgeous and he grew obsessed
- 15:39with her, and then he met her and she kind of was awful to
- 15:43him, and he was an in cell and decided that because she was awful
- 15:48to him, he was going to do what he needed to to make her
- 15:50pay, and that he would then enslave her in this weird way as revenge
- 16:00for her rejection. And it's interesting because the fact that she is already engaged
- 16:07to somebody when he wants to propose to her, he doesn't really present it
- 16:11as her being like as so many guys would have just like, oh,
- 16:18she wouldn't give me a chance. He was very much approaching it in the
- 16:22story like somebody got there before me. You know. However, so often
- 16:30and this is a real unfortunate thing, and I feel like we're finally starting
- 16:33to get away from it a little bit, but it's definitely still prevalent in
- 16:38stories where a woman is victimized by a guy. So often, in order
- 16:48to like sympathize with her, we have to make her otherwise like a perfect
- 16:56human being, or else the audience will start to wonder if maybe she deserves
- 17:00the way she's being treated. And so a part of me wondered if there
- 17:04was any inkling for Oda of like, I'll make her less than perfect,
- 17:11and maybe he's like, you know, doing this out of a little bit
- 17:15of revenge on her. And then he realized, like, oh, people
- 17:18might not see how monstrous a thing this is that he has done because they
- 17:26think she's a bitch, which is one hundred percent what happens. Like so
- 17:30many women out there who are actual victims are seen otherwise as being not great
- 17:37human beings, and so everybody just decides it's impossible that they were a victim
- 17:42at all. Either they were the perpetrator themselves and they're turning this around and
- 17:47just straight up lying, or they somehow invited this and they're getting what they
- 17:52get because they invited it, and they are getting what they deserve. And
- 17:59I mean, Amber Heard is a primary one for me, and I am
- 18:02going to go to my grave saying Amber Heard might not be a great person,
- 18:07but she was abused and Johnny Depp is a fucking piece of shit.
- 18:11And you can just quote me for a million years on that, and I
- 18:14will literally never take it back. And it is disgusting how effective his smear
- 18:21campaign was on her, because so many people need a female victim to be
- 18:27like perfectly pure in order for her to qualify as a victim at all.
- 18:33So I was sort of expecting a storyline that was like a little bit more
- 18:38revenge on his part instead of like wish fulfillment, which is what this seems
- 18:42to be. And then I started to be like, but there he's portraying
- 18:48her as just such a great person, and I was like, oh man,
- 18:52maybe that's because like some folks might not have sympathized as hard. I
- 18:56don't know. Again, I don't know that that's the thing. I just
- 19:00sort of it made me sort of stop and realize that that may be true,
- 19:06you know, especially based on like a primary target audience for this show
- 19:12would be a lot of like younger men who, unfortunately a lot of the
- 19:18times media has taught that girls don't give nice guys a chance, and because
- 19:23they don't, they deserve what they get, you know what I'm saying.
- 19:30So anyway, I'm glad that it wasn't revenge, but there is something about
- 19:34the fact that she was just a saint that I was like, I guess,
- 19:38okay, you know, like let's let's move it along here. And
- 19:42then we have this moment of the hut Back does this like inredibly fetishy thing
- 19:56where he proves his power over her by making her get on hands and knees
- 20:03and lick the floor, which is like a huge humiliation tactic and like a
- 20:08big kink thing, and it just felt so like this show, you guys,
- 20:14it is really filthy sometimes without being you know what I'm saying. And
- 20:19it just goes on and on, like there's multiple scenes and she is still
- 20:23licking the floor in the middle of the scene and we cut to her occasionally
- 20:26still doing it, and I appreciate that it's being done in a manner that
- 20:33is like meant to be appalling and get Chopper like so fired up, but
- 20:38also just the way it's done, like you know there And this really reminded
- 20:48me of The Dollhouse. Have you guys seen Dollhouse? The TV show?
- 20:55It was a Joss Whedon show, and it's the kind of show that I
- 20:57bet, if I were to go back can watch didn't age well at all,
- 21:02but at the time it felt genius. And the whole idea behind it
- 21:12is that you can, instead of going to jail for like a longer sentence,
- 21:19you can forfeit your agency over your body and allow them to upbload other
- 21:26consciousnesses into your body and basically send you on missions where they like use your
- 21:33body for recon or assassination attempts or just spywork or whatever, and that means
- 21:41a dramatically shortened sentence and you get back like your consciousness gets just put on
- 21:49a shelf for a little while your body is used for whatever, and then
- 21:53once it's done, your consciousness gets put back into your body and you have
- 21:56no memory of the things that you did while they had control over you.
- 22:02And it's like initially created as this sort of you know, program for military
- 22:11use, and of course winds up getting like co opted in this extremely gross
- 22:15way for sex work that is not consensual. Like these women are not aware
- 22:22that's going to be part of what they are their bodies are used for.
- 22:26And there is a guy who is He basically like puts a particular woman in
- 22:32their path because she won't sleep with them and he wants her, so he
- 22:38makes sure that she winds up in a position where she has to take this
- 22:41deal and then he sleeps with her repeatedly, and like they he winds up
- 22:52like taking photos so that when her consciousness is put back, he can torment
- 22:56her with the fact that she did something she would never have done. And
- 23:00this just really really reminded me of that. And it's a weird like despite
- 23:07the fact that Sindri hates him so much and is frequently talking about how much
- 23:11she hates him, there isn't as much like attempting to be like Coupily with
- 23:22her from Doctor Hogback as I would have expected based on the way he felt
- 23:26about her. I was thinking that he might be more like Absalom than with
- 23:32Nami than he is, but he's pretty much letting her be his assistant and
- 23:37he's bummed that she doesn't like him and always talk shit about him. But
- 23:41it's not the kind of like bummed of romantic rejection. It just kind of
- 23:48feels like you're being really disrespectful and mean for no reason. What the hell?
- 23:52And I'm really grateful, to be honest, that we don't have another
- 24:02dude being extremely like gropy with a woman who is unconsenting, because we really
- 24:08only need like none of that, and we already have one, which is
- 24:12more than I want, So having two of them is overkill in that department.
- 24:19But because the storyline is still what it is, whether or not he's
- 24:25overtly like assaulting her, it's still so clearly assault what he's done to her
- 24:36so far anyway, that it hardly matters, you know. And this conversation
- 24:42I found really fascinating because he's like talking about all of this and Chopper is
- 24:49he says, because you know, you guys, when we got to this
- 24:52island and Chopper was having dinner and he was talking to doctor Hogback and still
- 24:57very much idolizing this guy, Chopper, I was like so confused, because
- 25:03it seemed very obvious to me that Hogback was the one responsible for the zombies,
- 25:07and Chopper just seemed to have no problem with that, And I was
- 25:11like, what is your deal, Chopper, Like, I know you're not
- 25:14a fool, Like sometimes you're a fool. Okay, I take that back,
- 25:17my bad, but like, this does seem like something you should have
- 25:21put two and two together. And it turns out he had put two and
- 25:25two together. But in Chopper's mind, the attempt to reanimate people these were
- 25:37this was like a worthy goal if it were to be used for the sake
- 25:42of the loved ones who lost somebody, or for the sake of a person
- 25:48who maybe died unexpectedly and had something to tell people and didn't get a chance.
- 25:55And so Chopper was like rooting for him in his research because he thought
- 26:02he knew what Hogback was like striving for and was willing to sort of be
- 26:07open minded about what he had to do to achieve this, even though other
- 26:12doctors clearly had a problem with it. And it's unclear to me if they
- 26:18had a problem, because they knew quite well exactly what Hogback was up to.
- 26:22And I'm going to guess that or if they just had a you know,
- 26:29feeling about the taboo of raising the dead, which would also be perfectly
- 26:32valid for the record, But what Chopper has discovered is that this guy just
- 26:38wants to basically like rule the world and be the master of all of these
- 26:45like mindless undead creatures. And Chopper very rightfully in my mind, Hogback keeps
- 26:55talking about how he has given them a second life, and Chopper is like,
- 27:00they're not alive. They're not alive. What do you mean they don't
- 27:06have any free will, Like, this doesn't count as life. They are
- 27:10enslaved to you, that's not being alive. And I was like, thank
- 27:15you, Chopper, yes you have. You have articulated this really well.
- 27:21And this all sort of for me got crystallized a little bit in this.
- 27:30So there's the moment where Hobacks like telling them how he reanimated um Sindry and
- 27:37he brings her back to life with the shadow obviously, which means that her
- 27:41personality is like not the same, and he says something like, but she
- 27:48was still beautiful, and frankly, that was all that mattered to me.
- 27:52So when they when he issues the order to Sindri to attack, I can
- 28:00kill them. She winds up getting like gripped up. First, Chopper like
- 28:06charges in and is holding her back, and then Robin chimes in and is
- 28:12helping out Chopper by handing him some salt so that they can attempt to get
- 28:18Sindury freed from this body. But then what Hogback says, and this chilled
- 28:29me to the bone, you guys, is it doesn't matter, Sindury,
- 28:37keep fighting them, even if they purify you. I'll just get another shadow.
- 28:42It doesn't matter. And that, more than anything else, really drove
- 28:49home for me how little who she is is any kind of factor for him.
- 28:56It is literally just about her body walking around and that is all he
- 29:03cares about. And whether or not anything of her remains is just told.
- 29:11It's not even secondary. It's simply not a factor. And the idea that
- 29:18like she could go through all of this, her body, go through all
- 29:21of this over and over again, while he continues to just take shadows and
- 29:26constantly bring her back and bring her back, that is grim you guys.
- 29:32Even in Dollhouse, if you died, you died, that was it.
- 29:36The body was still a regular human body. Yeah, they had much more
- 29:40advanced healing techniques. Because of the technology for the whole setup to begin with,
- 29:45so it was a lot harder to get killed, but the human body
- 29:48still would break beyond a certain point. And because Sindury is undead, I
- 29:56don't even know if I want to say undead, that like it's it's something
- 30:00it's not. But her body can just be like used ad nauseum. And
- 30:08that's so upsetting, Like I don't know. That really got to me.
- 30:15And the look on Sindri's face. We have more than one moment where Sindri
- 30:22is being ordered to kill them and she's having trouble moving, And there's one
- 30:26point right before she has trouble moving that we see all of these seemed to
- 30:32be like memories flickering through her head and it's sort of like part of her
- 30:37is still in there and trying to fight back. And then she says she
- 30:42sort of breaks out of this frozen moment and she's like, I'll kill I'll
- 30:48kill them both. And the way that Chopper and Robin here that is her
- 30:56saying that she's going to kill them, I am I'm not convinced that was
- 31:00what she was saying. Kill them both could mean Maria and Hogback, you
- 31:07know, it could be absalom and and Hogback. I kind of thought maybe
- 31:15it was. She had been able to like get clear for a second,
- 31:19but Robin misinterpreted it and stopped her, thinking that Sindrew was about to come
- 31:25after her and Chopper. I'm not sure if that's true or not. But
- 31:30Cindrey keeps fighting back, and there is another point at which she starts smiling,
- 31:36and it's like the first expression that she has made that isn't this like
- 31:41deadpan, soulless look. And that is the moment that everybody really is starting
- 31:47to be like, oh shit. But she doesn't succeed in breaking out from
- 31:53his control completely. In this section of episodes, it's been more than one
- 32:00attempt, but none of them have been successful. And Chopper, for his
- 32:07part, he like goes goes after Hogback, and he is just like,
- 32:19I really enjoyed this. Says something about how I don't respect you as a
- 32:23doctor anymore because I don't even see you as a doctor. Frankly, that's
- 32:30not even who you are anymore. Like you have so crossed the line that
- 32:35of course you're just a fucking madman who is enslaving people, and you do
- 32:43not deserve the title of doctor, to which Hogback is like, well,
- 32:47fuck you, I'm going to do what I do, and that means I'm
- 32:51going to turn you into a zombie, and then you are going to work
- 32:55for me, and you are going to be so happy to work for like
- 33:00the best and most genius doctor that ever lived. And he keeps on talking
- 33:04about how he is a genius and everybody else should be worshiping him, and
- 33:12I love, love, love when Chopper expresses his like the hope that he
- 33:21had originally of maybe we're helping people bring their loved ones back so that they
- 33:25could talk for like one last time, we get this bit from Hogback where
- 33:34he's like, helping people, I'm not a fucking chump, dude. I
- 33:39mean I have tried that. And do you know how relentless it is.
- 33:45Everybody was bringing me their sister, their daughter, their brother, their loved
- 33:51ones. I just got so tired of it. It was endless, and
- 33:57they just wind all the time. And honestly, as much as this was
- 34:01fucked up, I could not help but laugh a little bit, because I
- 34:07mean, I bet it was endless. You know, if you're somebody that
- 34:10can bring people back from the dead and you're the only one who's figured out
- 34:15how to do it in the world. Imagine how long that fucking wait list
- 34:21is. I love the concept actually of there being somebody who's like a necromancer
- 34:27for hire, but they have a wait list that's like seven years out.
- 34:31So people have to find a way to preserve the body because they like this
- 34:37person can do it, but you have to wait a really long time,
- 34:42and you have to put down a hell of a down payment to hold your
- 34:45spot anyway, So yeah, he just doesn't want to do this. And
- 34:52there's a comic that came out and I think it was written by Elliott Kaylin,
- 34:57who is who used to be a writer for The Daily Show, and
- 35:00he's on the podcast The Flophouse, and there's this guy who has figured out
- 35:06how to utilize a certain type of science to turn human beings into dinosaurs.
- 35:13And there's a bit of dialogue where he's talking to somebody who's like, you
- 35:16figured out how to do something incredible, and you could be out here curing
- 35:20cancer, and the mad scientist replies, I don't want to kill cure cancer.
- 35:25I want to turn people into dinosaurs. And that's really the energy here.
- 35:30He's just like I don't want to help people. I want an army
- 35:32of undead slaves. I feel like I'm being very clear. It's weird that
- 35:37you keep coming back to the me helping people think, because that's super not
- 35:42what I'm about. Gus says. I think Hogback told them when they first
- 35:47got to the mansion that the zombies are naturally occurring on the island. Oh
- 35:52really, Oh I didn't remember that, Gus. That he said, okay,
- 35:57and that he's researching them to bring people back from the dead. You
- 36:00know what, Okay, I vaguely remember that now that he was he was
- 36:05sort of trying to suggest that it was like a phenomenon of the soil here
- 36:09or something. I think I vaguely remember that. Okay, Yeah, that
- 36:14makes sense. So yeah, we have multiple moments of you know, Chopper
- 36:22attempting to attack I love this when he attacks Hogback and he's like, I'm
- 36:30fighting for my captain, who doesn't need to have like zombie slaves in order
- 36:35to make people do what he says. And then we have Robin who uses
- 36:40piernifflers and just rises him up on hundreds it seems like pairs of feet into
- 36:51the air. It's it's Chopper on his own feet, like his feet are
- 36:58being multiplied below him, and Chopper is holding him in like a bear hug
- 37:04so that he's up hundreds of feet above the floor. And then Chopper says,
- 37:10Chopper souplex, and we see him like bend backward, but we don't
- 37:17get to see like the full impact of the thing. We just see this
- 37:24the backward bend. We cut to Lufy for a second, and then when
- 37:30we cut back into the room, we go away to fucking Oars because of
- 37:34course we do. Chopper is just standing next to Robin and there is like
- 37:42a crater in the floor from Oars busting the tower up. So the suplex,
- 37:51I guess, got interrupted. But I was a little bit bummed because
- 37:55I really wanted to see Chopper get to suplex this guy, and I just
- 38:00wanted to, you know, like this dude deserves it, and I would
- 38:04not I would have enjoyed getting the sea Chopper do his thing, but instead
- 38:10it all gets foiled, and I was like, or is his ruining everybody's
- 38:20day? He is just out here fucking the whole game up for everybody.
- 38:27And Chopper had just managed to like jump off to the side and get onto
- 38:31the floor, but he almost goes down through the like hole in the ground
- 38:37the floor that's you know, high enough up that he'd probably been pretty injured
- 38:43if he landed, and hogback falls on the other side and he gets trapped
- 38:50by a piece of falling debris. So I'm really curious if he is gonna
- 38:54stay trapped and they're gonna come back to him eventually and he's still gonna be
- 38:58there just like waiting for them, or if he's going to find a way
- 39:02out and like become a fucking hassle again. But either way, it's time
- 39:08to talk about wars. This guy, truly what a pain in the ass.
- 39:17Everybody is sort of figuring out that this is the one the zombie that
- 39:23has Lufy's shadow in it, and he is using the posters like I mentioned,
- 39:32to like locate who he needs to And this entire bit with Sanji is
- 39:42actually really funny to me because he is punching at Sanji in a way that
- 39:51all of our friends who are sort of off to the side watching this fight,
- 39:55they all think Sanji is complete lee pounded into paste, like there is
- 40:02no doubt in any of their minds that that's it. That's a rap on
- 40:08Sanji, and then it turns out that Ors is just like blindly punching blindly
- 40:17feels a little strong, but he is not doing any damage whatsoever. Sanji
- 40:23is just dodging him repeatedly, and I was kind of thinking, oh,
- 40:30is Sanji going to be able to just dance circles around him. There's even
- 40:35a moment as everybody realizes that Sanji is still alive, where we go over
- 40:39to Zoro, who looks like pleased to see that Sanji is holding his own,
- 40:45which I just have to mention because you know, as we see him
- 40:50and Zoro get along so poorly that even their shadows are fighting, which is
- 40:54hilarious. And once Sanji sort of seems to feel like, okay, I've
- 41:06been dodging him. I really don't have anything to worry about, that is
- 41:09when it feels like Ors really begins to like pull it out and do his
- 41:15shit, and Sanji starts to be like, oh, okay, it seems
- 41:21like the zombie is actually kind of badass. Oh brother, what am I
- 41:24gonna do? And he's like able to dodge for the most part, but
- 41:31it's a lot of there's there. It's more desperate dodging. It had been
- 41:39kind of effortless seeming, and this time it's really like, oh God,
- 41:44oh God, until finally Ors manages to connect with him and gets him like
- 41:52he's holding him by his body upside down and says something about how he's gonna
- 42:00squash him, and Maria's like instructions to Oars was capture them and put them
- 42:07on their ship. But if you accidentally, like kill one, that's not
- 42:10that big a deal. And so this whole thing is like the moment where
- 42:22he's holding Sanji upside down, it seems like basically Ores has given up on
- 42:30the I'm gonna keep you alive thing and is purely out here going, okay,
- 42:35I'm gonna squash you into paste. That's what's about to happen. And
- 42:40it gets interrupted by us Up, of all people, and you guys,
- 42:50I really can't with the fact that it takes so much salt to deal with
- 42:52this dude. I'm so bummed. Us Up gets a full shot of I
- 42:59think like three or four balls of salt into Oars his mouth. It's like
- 43:07a lot, and Oars just gulps and looks at him and nothing happens,
- 43:15and I can't tell whether or not the salt they give him is cumulative,
- 43:21Like I have to assume if they give him three and then they give him
- 43:28another three later, it's as if they gave him six at once. I'm
- 43:31hoping, and not that they have to give him all the salt at the
- 43:35exact same time or else it doesn't do anything, like is it being metabolized?
- 43:39I guess that's my main question. But I was just so upset because
- 43:45Usap is really proud of himself, feeling like, Okay, I did the
- 43:49thing, and it doesn't do anything, and they're all just staring waiting for
- 43:55the salt to like, you know, activate I guess they think that they've
- 44:01won it's the end of the game, and it doesn't go that way,
- 44:06and I was just like, this is super unfair. So the other thing
- 44:15is that everybody around who is watching this fight is intimidated by or is his
- 44:23size. But they're like, well, eventually it's going to be my turn
- 44:27to need to like try myself against this dude. So it seems like Frankie
- 44:31and Zoro especially are prepared to eventually have to step forward, but the way
- 44:38that they each go down, like eventually Sanji gets knocked out, Zoro gets
- 44:46knocked out. Frankie he tries one of his like torpedo things and that shit
- 44:53just he dodges it. Or is this like a lot faster and more agile
- 45:00than they expect for something his size? And I have got to agree with
- 45:04Frankie on this one. That just seems super unfair. It really seems like
- 45:07that's the price you pay for being enormous is agility. You just aren't allowed
- 45:13to move as fast because you're extremely humongous, and that's just part of the
- 45:17package. And the fact that he is fast and quick and has these like
- 45:22reflexes when he's also bigger than the building just doesn't really seem quite fair.
- 45:32But yeah, so the fight with all of them I'm gonna like back away
- 45:37from because, like I said, it basically ends with absolutely everybody knocked out.
- 45:44Let's talk about let's you guys. So there's there's this whole thing going
- 45:54on with Hilden is that I know you guys have told me this literally every
- 46:00time, and I will never remember and I'm so sorry, but y'all know
- 46:05the little Cereal mascot. He is flying around trying to find Maria because he
- 46:13wants to warn Maria about how Oars is out of control, which I was
- 46:17like, it's weird to me that you aren't aware that that's part of the
- 46:22plan is to like let him be out of control for a minute, because
- 46:24that's going to happen. And he seems to be pretty much like if we
- 46:31like even if it is part of the deal that zombies have their own personality
- 46:37retained a little bit and then eventually they become completely compliant, that's unwell and
- 46:45good, but that's assuming that he doesn't destroy the entire island by the time
- 46:49that happens. So you get the vibe that he is attempting to report this
- 46:53because he's thinking that the damage is about to be sort of beyond repair.
- 47:00And he goes looking a few different places for Maria. So one of the
- 47:06places that he shows up is Absalom's wedding, second attempt at this wedding,
- 47:15and we get a pretty good bit, you guys, the whole Like so
- 47:22Absalom, we have another bit of him attempting to kiss Nami, and the
- 47:30way that this goes is again very like slow and tons of build up,
- 47:37and he is interrupted by Hilden who flies in and of course lands in the
- 47:45exact spot where Absalom's lips are gonna go, so Absalom winds up kissing him
- 47:51instead, which results in Hilden calling him a pervert degenerate, which I am
- 47:59not a fan of the implied homophobia here, but I think that's correct for
- 48:04Absalom just for the record, And there is a pretty like there's something about
- 48:12the voice actor for Hilden and the way that they're having him voiced that is
- 48:19so endearing to me, And I think it's the fact that Hilden seems to
- 48:22basically be a pretty competent person who is in some bad situations that can't be
- 48:29helped, but he is genuinely like doing his best. Because when he comes
- 48:34in and interrupts the kiss, and of course Absalom is super pissed and then
- 48:39asks, Okay, well, why the fuck are you here, Hilden tries
- 48:45to be like, well, I've been looking for Maria and I thought maybe
- 48:47he was here. And there's like a brief pause before I's like, well,
- 48:52do you fucking see him here? And Hilden just goes, no,
- 48:59I don't. Maybe he's somewhere else. Then yeah, he probably is,
- 49:06Like there's the way he responds, He's not even really defensive, He's just
- 49:10like, yeah, I wasn't really thinking fully. I'm sorry about that.
- 49:15I drank my dumb bitch juice this morning, and nah, this is my
- 49:19bad, and I'll be on my way. And there's something about how sort
- 49:22of like he immediately caves that is really really funny to me, because this
- 49:29is exactly how I would be I busted and then be like, oh my
- 49:31god, I'm so sorry. Oh my god, I'm so sorry to interrupt.
- 49:35That is so embarrassing. So he leaves there, and he runs across
- 49:40the zombie Zoro and Sangi, who are fighting, and I sort of skipped
- 49:47over this bit, but they are fighting in front of doctor Hogback, who
- 49:53is like, make sure you kill the others, and they of course initially
- 50:01begin to attack Robin and Chopper, and then they start to like get in
- 50:08each other's way during the fight as they do, and the zombie is like,
- 50:16hey, watch a man, you almost hit me with the strike.
- 50:21Well maybe if you weren't in my way, they would be over allready,
- 50:24And eventually they realize that they can choose to interpret Hogbacks order, which is
- 50:32kill the others as killing each other, and he tries to take his order
- 50:39back once he realizes that they're like choosing to interpret it this way, and
- 50:45Robin just wraps him up and stops him from being able to speak so that
- 50:51he can't take it back. And then she sets him up to be like,
- 50:57if we were zombies, you could probably just tell us to like jump
- 51:00out a window or something. And she lets him loose just long enough for
- 51:06him to say, like, I would just tell you jump out the window
- 51:09and end it all. And of course these two hear him say that and
- 51:15are like, can do boss, and they jump out the window. Now,
- 51:21this is the only thing that I consistently get annoyed with with this show,
- 51:25and it is something that is so slight that I'm sure anyone else would
- 51:30be like, get over it. And I recognize that, and I want
- 51:37to, but it's distracting. And that is how completely arbitrary it is whether
- 51:45a certain height will kill you to fall from or not. And this is
- 51:50ties in with the whole Like everybody is so impressed that cocrew could basically fly,
- 51:57but everybody is six hundred feet in the air performing these karate moves also,
- 52:04and I get that it wants to be like fun to watch and super
- 52:07dramatic, and that's all well and good, but that means that you sacrifice
- 52:12the moments that are actually meant to be impressive, like him jumping from building
- 52:16to building with me just going like that's basically what everybody in the series seems
- 52:23to be able to do anyway, if they have any fighting ability, it's
- 52:27like they can basically fly. And this bit where the two of them jump
- 52:35out the window, they fall a long way, And there had been a
- 52:42bit when Zoro is fighting Oars where Oars like chucks him into the air and
- 52:50Zoro is so high up that I think it's Chopper who's like, there is
- 52:54no way he falls from that height and doesn't die, And I'm looking at
- 52:59it like, yeah, but he could just not though, because the show
- 53:06is just real fast and loose with what's actually dangerous and what's not. So
- 53:12like the two zombie Zoro and Sangies, they land and are perfectly fine,
- 53:22And I get the zombies are meant to be like resilient, but there's a
- 53:25difference between like this cut didn't kill me because I don't bleed and I hit
- 53:34the ground from like six hundred feet in the air and didn't break a bone
- 53:38or splatter or anything. They're so perfectly fine that when Hilden stumbles on them
- 53:47again, they are back to fighting each other, and he has to be
- 53:52like, guys, this isn't this isn't the bit like, and he tries
- 53:55to get them to tell him what order they were given because he suspects that
- 54:00they are going about it the wrong way. But they tell him what the
- 54:06order was, which is kill the others and then go immediately back to like
- 54:10passionately fighting, and he's sort of like, all right, you know what,
- 54:15I gotta move on. I don't have time for this, and he
- 54:16leaves them to it. So I guess they fell all that way. I'm
- 54:22thinking when they're ordered to jump out the window that it's going to turn out
- 54:27they smash themselves up and their shadows go right back into Sanji and Zoro,
- 54:35And I did think that was weird because like, part of the fun of
- 54:37this I thought was going to be them fighting their shadow selves. So I
- 54:43was sort of taken aback, like, oh, are we just going to
- 54:45like skip that for them? Maybe it's just Loofy fighting his shadow self that's
- 54:51supposed to be sort of the set piece, but it seems like we wanted
- 54:55to have our cake and eat it too, and have them jump out this
- 54:58window and fall forever. Like it's really emphasized how high up this is,
- 55:05but then be absolutely perfectly fine. And like I said, the irony of
- 55:09it being sort of juxtaposed with Zoro falling and it being really tense and he
- 55:15has to be caught by Robin. I can't get that invested in the falls
- 55:22being dangerous anymore because it just seems like if you're meant to survive, then
- 55:28it won't be like it's a big fall at all. And I should mention
- 55:32that the way that Robin catches Zoro is she uses the you know, appearance
- 55:37of hands and make this makes this like giant net around him that sort of
- 55:43closes like in a teardrop shape, and it was so creepy, you Like,
- 55:50I understand that this is functionally helpful, of course, but there is
- 55:55something about it that is so off putting. Oh my god. I think
- 56:00it's a combo of like thinking about how warm and soft it would be because
- 56:06it's all body parts, which like that sounds pleasant on the surface, but
- 56:13when you really think about it, there's something so unnatural about it, and
- 56:21also the fact that like when you see it animated, it looks really ugly,
- 56:27like, you know, it's all of this tan, fleshy color,
- 56:31and it's the shape of like hands repeated can be kind of freaky. And
- 56:39overall, as much as I appreciate that she can fly for very short distances
- 56:45by making tons of arms and she can make a net to catch him,
- 56:50there's another part of me that it's like, you know, don't you know,
- 56:52I don't want to see it. Stop it. But anyway, so
- 56:59the thing with Hildon, he like goes on, and there's this really funny
- 57:05moment, at least to me, where he finally does catch up to Maria
- 57:12and it's like I wanted to tell you about this problem because you know,
- 57:16or is this really out of control? And Maria is basically like, wow,
- 57:23that sounds like a pretty big problem. I guess you're gonna have to
- 57:28figure it out. And Hildon is like, I'm gonna what And Maria is
- 57:34like, yep, you got this buddy bite and basically like completely bails and
- 57:39leaves him holding the bag and I I don't know why, but it's Maria's
- 57:46whole thing with Lufy in these episodes, which I haven't talked about at all,
- 57:51and I'm like out of time, but I will briefly touch on it.
- 57:54Maria is out here bragging to Lufy about how he has this all under
- 58:00control, but then when it comes to his own underling, he's just like,
- 58:04I'm not doing that, and I was just like, man, this
- 58:07emphasizes for me how Hilden his middle management and just like he is competent and
- 58:14that's why this shit happens to him. This is the danger of being good
- 58:17at your job, is that if you're too good and prove that you can
- 58:21like rise to the challenge over and over again, they will just fucking screw
- 58:24you because they know you will always get it done. And that is the
- 58:30ugly side of having a work ethic. So anyway, Hilden continues to be
- 58:37like a weird dark horse favorite for me, I just really enjoy his character.
- 58:42He is so adorable looking like his just his whole look, and then
- 58:47the vibe that he has in this section specifically of just like being a dude
- 58:52who's trying to do his duty. He's doing his best, he's trying to
- 58:55get information out there and just continuously like running into brick walls and the job
- 59:02being so thankless. I was just like, man, I really feel you
- 59:06on this, buddy. I'm super glad to be out of that kind of
- 59:08place. Florian says, I love Maria. He is such a boss,
- 59:14like a boss at a real job. I mean exactly exactly. So briefly
- 59:21the fight with Maria and Lufy, if I can even call it that,
- 59:24it's Maria's shadow, you know, but Lufy is like chasing after Maria at
- 59:30the start of these three episodes and is really disgusted at the fact that Oars
- 59:37is coming and Maria is fleeing, and is like, you're meant to be
- 59:42here with like facing off with me, and the fact that you're trying to
- 59:47flee is dishonorable. And then he sees Oars and you can see how like
- 59:54impressed Lufy is despite himself, and he says some thing about how you don't
- 1:00:01have to listen to this guy. You know, you're you could do whatever
- 1:00:07you want. But the bond between Maria and Or's is like starting to strengthen,
- 1:00:15So there's a moment where it seems like maybe he may get through,
- 1:00:21but then Maria is like Hey, I've given you some photos of people that
- 1:00:24you need to handle for me, and or is basically Zero's in right on
- 1:00:30that, and I love He looks at the poster of Lufy and then looks
- 1:00:35at Lufy and it's like I found one. I don't know why that cracked
- 1:00:39me up so bad. So then we have like Lufy avoiding him and trying
- 1:00:45to track down Maria, who is continuing to just try and like sideline,
- 1:00:51Lufy using his shadow, and we have another like bat attack which Lufy uses
- 1:00:58gum gum gatling and it's successful this time, when last time it didn't work
- 1:01:02at all. Actually, I say that I'm realizing now it wasn't that it
- 1:01:07didn't work last time against the bats. Last time he tried to use it
- 1:01:13against Maria, and Maria used his shadow to create a bunch of little shields
- 1:01:17against it, and that kept him from getting hit. So I guess the
- 1:01:21bats are a lot more susceptible to it. But yeah, he, like
- 1:01:25Maria, sicks his bats on Lufy and then is like, find me when
- 1:01:30you're done, and he runs off again, and Lufy takes care of them
- 1:01:35pretty quickly and then turns and begins running after him, and that's most of
- 1:01:42the episode is him just like trying to chase down Maria and force a fight
- 1:01:45to happen that isn't likely to happen until a bit later because Ores is wreaking
- 1:01:51absolute havoc right now, and I can't decide if Lufy's going to like fight
- 1:01:55Maria while he still doesn't have a shadow, if he's going to figure out
- 1:02:00a way to get through to Oars and maybe turn Oars to his own side.
- 1:02:04I don't really see how that happens. But I don't know how this
- 1:02:07works. There's also the possibility of like getting more salt together I don't know
- 1:02:10how much of it they have, or just getting him to like drink seawater
- 1:02:16or eat a salted fish, literally anything salt that could be it. There's
- 1:02:23a part of me that's like feels like that's so easy that I'd rather not
- 1:02:29go that way, But another part of me is like, well, that's
- 1:02:32easy. It sounds easy, but would it be And also imagine like you
- 1:02:37manage to purify him when he's in the middle of the crowd, and then
- 1:02:42this giant creature just begins to fall. That's like a building collapsing, like
- 1:02:49worse than a building collapsing. They really better pick their moment from when they're
- 1:02:54going to try and purify him if they do. Anyway, Okay, I
- 1:03:00gotta wrap up, but thank you guys all so much for listening for hanging
- 1:03:07out with me. This was a really fun section. I'm extremely interested in
- 1:03:12what happens to Sindri, especially because she's in there somewhere and I want her
- 1:03:19to get free. And I'm really hoping she's the one who's going to be
- 1:03:21able to exact revenge on Hogback because she deserves it. Especially all right,
- 1:03:25everybody, until next time to the Loom. Motherfucker's That was an Unspoiled Network podcast.
