- 1:38Speaker 8: Welcome to the Writer's Roundtable with Rusty Burson, Robert Cessna,
- 1:43Speaker 8: and your host, Chip Howard. The Writer's Roundtable is brought
- 1:47Speaker 8: to you by Intec and First Financial Bank.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Hey, it's us. Rusty's here. Cease is here. It is
- 1:57Speaker 5: game week. And I say this every year, man. Once
- 2:02Speaker 5: game week hits, it goes quick. It takes forever to
- 2:06Speaker 5: get here. There's all this anticipation. And then, man, after
- 2:11Speaker 5: you kick off Saturday night, this season goes in a hurry.
- 2:17Speaker 9: And quicker this year with only one bye. You know,
- 2:18Speaker 9: last year was the two byes.
- 2:20Speaker 5: One bye.
- 2:20Speaker 9: Last year was a little bit. I like that two byes.
- 2:23Speaker 5: You're playing a directional game in October and not in
- 2:25Speaker 5: November this year. True. That's true, too. With the Citadel coming.
- 2:32Speaker 5: And it's... I don't know. We've said this before. I
- 2:38Speaker 5: don't know if we'll be able to tell much about
- 2:42Speaker 5: this 2016 on Saturday. You always want to see a
- 2:47Speaker 5: clean game, right? Not a lot of penalties, especially pre-snap penalties,
- 2:53Speaker 5: holding big plays called back. You'd like to see a
- 2:58Speaker 5: clean game if possible. Again, it's the first game, but
- 3:02Speaker 5: That's kind of what I look for. You don't want
- 3:07Speaker 5: to see your quarterback's jersey dirty after this game. That's
- 3:12Speaker 5: another thing I'd look for.
- 3:14Speaker 9: I look for Marcel Reed to complete at least 75%
- 3:19Speaker 9: of his passes because that's one area that he has
- 3:22Speaker 9: to get better at. I liked the one thing. Elko
- 3:28Speaker 9: said that stood out to me, he divides the season
- 3:31Speaker 9: in quarters. And I kind of like that because three games,
- 3:36Speaker 9: getting back to what you said, after three games, I
- 3:39Speaker 9: think you will have an indication where A & M' s at.
- 3:42Speaker 9: They play, the first team obviously should kill, I don't
- 3:46Speaker 9: care if Missouri State did go to a ball game
- 3:48Speaker 9: last year.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Their conference useless.
- 3:50Speaker 9: So A & M physically and everything's got to be
- 3:53Speaker 9: so much better. Then you play an Arizona State team,
- 3:57Speaker 9: which you're playing a Big 12 team.
- 3:59Speaker 5: So I'll be interested to see after three games where
- 4:01Speaker 5: A & M' s at.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Well, I want to see Marcel Reed play a complete
- 4:04Speaker 4: game for as long as he's in there because, quite frankly,
- 4:06Speaker 4: I haven't seen him play a complete game since the
- 4:08Speaker 4: Missouri game of last year. I mean, he didn't play
- 4:10Speaker 4: a complete game against South Carolina.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 4:13Speaker 4: He certainly, I didn't think he was very good against Sanford.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I mean, at all.
- 4:17Speaker 5: I don't remember that.
- 4:19Speaker 4: He was not good.
- 4:19Speaker 5: He was not crisp at all. I believe it.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I mean, he just came out and just was like
- 4:23Speaker 4: all over the place. Didn't play that well against Texas.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And certainly, I mean, wasn't great against Miami. So, it's
- 4:29Speaker 4: been a long time since I've seen him come out
- 4:32Speaker 4: and really impress me. And maybe, I don't remember the
- 4:35Speaker 4: Missouri game in particular. I remember how impressive he was
- 4:37Speaker 4: against LSU, but that's been a long time ago.
- 4:40Speaker 9: Well, the Missouri game, what I remember, and everybody asked me, Cessna,
- 4:44Speaker 9: you were there, and I said, you know what's in
- 4:46Speaker 9: my mind after so many years? What I remember most
- 4:49Speaker 9: about Missouri, I thought A & M should have taken
- 4:52Speaker 9: care of a team when it started sticking quarterback quicker.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Even though I know they were on the road.
- 4:56Speaker 9: That stuck out to me because I remember Brooks had
- 4:59Speaker 9: to have an interception, if I'm not mistaken, whatever. But
- 5:01Speaker 9: you bring up a good point. When you're playing a
- 5:03Speaker 9: team like this, Everybody swears, and I believe it too,
- 5:08Speaker 9: reads the leader of this team. So your leader should
- 5:10Speaker 9: go out there, take care of business. In two and
- 5:13Speaker 9: a half quarters, he should be signing autographs.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Not missing wide-open throws.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And that's what he did way too often later in
- 5:19Speaker 4: the season. That's what bothered me against Sanford because I
- 5:23Speaker 4: was like, well, he's missing the wide-open throws. I mean,
- 5:26Speaker 4: it's like, this is Sanford. And so, you know, again,
- 5:29Speaker 4: this is Missouri State, so I want to see him very,
- 5:31Speaker 4: very sharp.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, and the other side of that equation is, do
- 5:40Speaker 5: you want to just be basic against this kind of team?
- 5:45Speaker 4: I think you should, Chip.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I mean, I want to see him be basic and
- 5:49Speaker 4: be really solid.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Yeah. But I would say the same thing, would you not,
- 5:54Speaker 5: about let's see how this offensive line performs against lesser competition.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:02Speaker 5: And make no mistake, everybody's got a dude or two.
- 6:05Speaker 5: But when you play a team like this, you're playing
- 6:08Speaker 5: a dude or two. You're not playing, you know, 10
- 6:11Speaker 5: or 12 or 15 dudes.
- 6:13Speaker 9: You're playing a DQ dude.
- 6:14Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. So I want to see the offensive line, again,
- 6:20Speaker 5: be clean, open holes, protect. You know, those are the
- 6:25Speaker 5: kinds of things I kind of look for.
- 6:27Speaker 9: And you're playing at home. So there shouldn't be a
- 6:29Speaker 9: busted play. You shouldn't look up and there's some guy
- 6:32Speaker 9: out there 15 yards on a down and out. Nobody's
- 6:34Speaker 9: within six yards of him. You shouldn't have that.
- 6:37Speaker 5: I get it.
- 6:38Speaker 9: You're playing new people, but everybody's jacked, and you're playing
- 6:42Speaker 9: at home. You're playing at home, so you have the advantage.
- 6:45Speaker 9: It's a night game. Everybody's going to be jacked up.
- 6:48Speaker 9: I get it. If you're the fans, you should be.
- 6:52Speaker 9: It seems like it's been a long time since Miami.
- 6:55Speaker 9: I don't care if you're a writer.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:58Speaker 9: If you're on, you know, you're talking about it every day.
- 7:01Speaker 9: It's been a long time since that was an agonizing
- 7:05Speaker 9: game because they couldn't score.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Right. It was just a.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Well, you know, the wind, the conditions were all crazy
- 7:12Speaker 4: in that game. But still, it's just... was just such frustration.
- 7:17Speaker 4: You know, it's just like three points, and there were
- 7:20Speaker 4: so many points left on the board, and it's just
- 7:22Speaker 4: like the memory I have is Reed throwing into the
- 7:25Speaker 4: end zone and getting it picked there at the end.
- 7:27Speaker 4: You know, that's what sticks out.
- 7:29Speaker 5: I mean, you look at the schedule, and the back
- 7:32Speaker 5: end certainly has challenges, but you look at the front
- 7:38Speaker 5: end of the schedule, and you've got, Missouri State, Arizona State, Kentucky,
- 7:43Speaker 5: all at home. I mean, that's 3-0. It has to be. Yeah,
- 7:48Speaker 5: that's what I'm saying.
- 7:49Speaker 9: A clean 3-0.
- 7:51Speaker 5: A clean 3-0. Then you go to LSU. We don't
- 7:56Speaker 5: even know if LSU is going to be a member
- 7:57Speaker 5: of this conference by the time you get there.
- 8:01Speaker 9: By then, Kiffin could be in two different teams.
- 8:03Speaker 5: They may be playing an independent schedule by then. He
- 8:06Speaker 5: might be in the NFL.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I heard Joe Milton got cut by the Cowboys today,
- 8:09Speaker 4: and they picked him up at LSU.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Did Joe Milton get cut?
- 8:13Speaker 4: He did get cut, yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Wow, okay. I don't even know who the second-team quarterback is.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I don't really care.
- 8:19Speaker 9: Billy Cannon was still alive. I think Lane would go
- 8:23Speaker 9: try to get him.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Well, so after the trip to LSU, you get Arkansas
- 8:29Speaker 5: at home. So– There is a very real possibility you
- 8:35Speaker 5: can be 5-0 going to Missouri, which is always underrated
- 8:42Speaker 5: and always problematic for a lot of teams. A &
- 8:45Speaker 5: M' s done pretty well against Missouri over the years.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but there's been some tough trips to Missouri, too.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 8:52Speaker 5: There have been a lot of tough trips. Gary Pickle
- 8:53Speaker 5: was there, though, coaching me. True.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I guess the one that sticks out in my mind
- 8:58Speaker 4: was Johnny Manziel where Missouri just beat up on a
- 9:01Speaker 4: wounded Manziel.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yeah. And they took no prisoners. It was a cold night.
- 9:05Speaker 9: It was an ugly night.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 10: It was.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Missouri is just so non-glamorous to go to. You know,
- 9:12Speaker 4: it's hard to get up for games like that.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 4: I mean, any time you look over there, I mean,
- 9:18Speaker 4: those rocks in the end zone, they're kind of intimidating.
- 9:20Speaker 9: Well, I'm hopeful that all these new renovations, because I've
- 9:25Speaker 9: gone there a few times with my cohorts. We get
- 9:27Speaker 9: there early enough. A lot of times you sit up
- 9:29Speaker 9: there in the back and you look down, and I
- 9:32Speaker 9: feel like I'm at a high school game. I just
- 9:34Speaker 9: don't feel like I'm at a– you know, SEC just
- 9:37Speaker 9: reeks of, oh, man, you go to Auburn, you go
- 9:40Speaker 9: to Alabama, you go to LSU.
- 9:41Speaker 5: You know, this is where it's at.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And Missouri just reeks.
- 9:45Speaker 5: You're right. You look at those rocks and you go like, wow,
- 9:49Speaker 5: how much did it cost them? They always go into
- 9:51Speaker 5: the season like as a ghost, like not mentioned.
- 9:56Speaker 11: 25th, 26th.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Undervalued.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Sometimes it takes a fifth down to beat them. though.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Going way back.
- 10:03Speaker 5: We've got listeners that have no idea what you're talking about.
- 10:07Speaker 4: You're right.
- 10:08Speaker 5: That was a good one. I mentioned yesterday at church
- 10:12Speaker 5: John Denver, and I had to look at these students
- 10:14Speaker 5: that are there, and I'm going, you don't know who
- 10:16Speaker 5: that is. I know you've never heard.
- 10:19Speaker 9: Of this person.
- 10:22Speaker 5: You've never heard of this person before. I'm making all
- 10:25Speaker 5: these references.
- 10:26Speaker 4: He sang the West Virginia fight song.
- 10:28Speaker 5: That's right, the West Virginia fight song. But starting with
- 10:33Speaker 5: Missouri on the 10th, you have at Alabama, you have
- 10:36Speaker 5: at South Carolina, you've got Tennessee at home, which I
- 10:40Speaker 5: have no idea what they're going to be. You have
- 10:43Speaker 5: at Oklahoma, which has an amazing home record over the years,
- 10:46Speaker 5: even when they haven't been good. And they should be very.
- 10:51Speaker 4: I've had some nightmarish experiences there in Norman.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Were you at 77-0?
- 10:55Speaker 4: I was at 77-0.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Congratulations.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I had to write a positive story on that one, too.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Did you?
- 11:01Speaker 4: No, it was not very positive.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Just checking. I hope you didn't get your credentials revoked
- 11:08Speaker 5: like that, like Mac Engel of the Star-Telegram did.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Reggie McNeil threw deep to Terrence Murphy on the first
- 11:14Speaker 4: play of the game. And it was incomplete.
- 11:16Speaker 5: Almost caught it.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And it was the closest the Aggies came to crossing
- 11:21Speaker 4: midfield all day long. I mean, kid you not.
- 11:24Speaker 5: It was ugly.
- 11:25Speaker 4: It was ugly.
- 11:25Speaker 9: I've had several trips to Oklahoma as I tried to
- 11:28Speaker 9: find my parking spot. I just hope I had one
- 11:30Speaker 9: because they kept moving you and you're out in the field.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Alabama, I think, was the farthest I've ever been away
- 11:36Speaker 5: at a stadium. Oklahoma, they love their... That's before A
- 11:39Speaker 5: & M started moving us farther and farther away from
- 11:41Speaker 5: the stadium. But Alabama was definitely the farthest I've ever been.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I needed to take a bus to get to the
- 11:49Speaker 5: stadium from where they put me. There's a few of
- 11:51Speaker 5: them like that.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Back to your point, OU's a tough place to play.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Missouri's tough. It is. Like I said, even in these
- 11:58Speaker 5: days where they haven't, you know, the post-bop stoops era,
- 12:01Speaker 5: if you look at their home schedule, it's really impressive.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I liked it when Schnellenberger and Blake were there. That
- 12:08Speaker 4: was better.
- 12:08Speaker 5: When John Blake was there, I would pay to get
- 12:12Speaker 5: John Blake back as the head coach at Oklahoma.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Well, you know, Schnellenberger, they were going to write novels
- 12:18Speaker 4: about his career at Oklahoma. The things that stick in
- 12:22Speaker 4: my head, I have no idea.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Okay, have I told you my Schnellenberger story?
- 12:25Speaker 4: No, please do.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Okay, so when I was calling University of Houston football
- 12:32Speaker 5: back in the early 80s, They played at the old
- 12:35Speaker 5: Orange Bowl, and Howard Schnellenberger was the head coach. And
- 12:39Speaker 5: this was when the Vare was running wild and Coach
- 12:43Speaker 5: Yeoman was pretty good.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:44Speaker 5: He was winning conference championships.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Yeah, they came in the first year and won the conference.
- 12:48Speaker 5: I mean, they were pretty good. Yeah. So flew down
- 12:51Speaker 5: to Miami, and Miami wasn't far removed from voting to
- 12:56Speaker 5: keep football and not end football, right? Remember those days?
- 13:00Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Now, this was... This was post-Texas being named number one
- 13:07Speaker 5: on the cover of Sports Illustrated and going to Miami
- 13:10Speaker 5: and getting beat when Miami was just awful. This was
- 13:14Speaker 5: after that. But they had just hired Howard Schnellenberger as
- 13:19Speaker 5: the head coach. Had the tweed jacket on, smoking the pipe,
- 13:23Speaker 5: was a Bear Bryant wannabe, had that deep, gravelly voice.
- 13:28Speaker 10: And....
- 13:30Speaker 5: So I go tape a pregame little interview with him.
- 13:37Speaker 5: That was on the Friday night before the game at
- 13:39Speaker 5: the Orange Bowl in his office. Get there on Saturday.
- 13:44Speaker 5: And I'm thinking it's a night game. And I'm looking
- 13:48Speaker 5: around and I'm going, good gosh, this team has some talent.
- 13:56Speaker 5: They had a freshman quarterback whose name was Jim Kelly.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I've heard of him.
- 14:02Speaker 5: They beat down Houston that night and three years later
- 14:05Speaker 5: won the national championship with that group of guys.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Was that like Danny Davis kind of Houston?
- 14:11Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they were. Houston was good. Yes,
- 14:14Speaker 5: they were. They were good. And they went to Miami
- 14:16Speaker 5: and got their butt whipped that night.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I remember when they first came in the Southwest Conference.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, okay, you know, we'll see what
- 14:22Speaker 4: they got now. And they came in and they won
- 14:24Speaker 4: the conference right away. I mean, they didn't waste any time.
- 14:28Speaker 9: I got to go up to play a couple Oklahoma
- 14:31Speaker 9: media golf tournaments when Howlin' Schnellenberger and John Blake were there.
- 14:35Speaker 5: And that was.
- 14:36Speaker 4: You know, the thing I remember most about Schnellenberger is
- 14:39Speaker 4: that his wife had, you know, this is timely because
- 14:44Speaker 4: she had Dolly Parton style. Like, she dressed like Dolly Parton.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Yes, she did.
- 14:50Speaker 4: She didn't have her voice and obviously everything else, but
- 14:53Speaker 4: she had... Her outfits were unforgettable.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Who are you talking about?
- 14:57Speaker 4: Schnellenberger's wife.
- 14:58Speaker 12: Really?
- 14:58Speaker 4: Oh, she had the most memorable outfit. Again, it was
- 15:01Speaker 4: like Dolly Parton style.
- 15:03Speaker 11: Wow.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yeah. No kidding.
- 15:05Speaker 11: Okay.
- 15:06Speaker 4: It was something else.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Apparently I missed her during that stretch of time I
- 15:10Speaker 5: was in Miami.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Well, when he was at OU, he kind of flaunted
- 15:13Speaker 4: her around because he didn't want to talk about football.
- 15:16Speaker 4: It was so bad.
- 15:17Speaker 9: Well, I remember he, you know, we go up there,
- 15:21Speaker 9: most of the coaches would play one or two holes
- 15:23Speaker 9: with all the, uh, riders in Oklahoma media golf tournament
- 15:27Speaker 9: in their day was, was quite a event to go to. And, uh,
- 15:31Speaker 9: Howard Schnellenberger, he just stayed in the clubhouse, and so
- 15:34Speaker 9: he gave out the awards, I remember, at the end.
- 15:38Speaker 9: And I won for straightest drive.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Nice, nice. That is crazy. That's the first time you've
- 15:47Speaker 5: ever done that.
- 15:48Speaker 9: You don't have to worry about it. It wasn't hitting well.
- 15:50Speaker 9: It wasn't hitting long, but it landed right on that line,
- 15:53Speaker 9: and it was pretty funny. He was had a little bit.
- 16:00Speaker 5: That little bear?
- 16:01Speaker 9: Yeah, and I don't think he even made it through
- 16:04Speaker 9: all the awards. I think he had to retire for
- 16:06Speaker 9: not feeling well. And then John Blake was great. You know,
- 16:10Speaker 9: you can wonder, you know why Oklahoma got rid of
- 16:13Speaker 9: those guys? Because just talking to the media people up
- 16:15Speaker 9: there when you play that tournament, how mad they were.
- 16:18Speaker 9: John Blake went out and said, welcome to everybody, whatever.
- 16:21Speaker 9: I had no idea what he said. I mean, he
- 16:23Speaker 9: was just up there, and he was sober. I mean,
- 16:26Speaker 9: you know, it was like.
- 16:27Speaker 5: But those– people in Oklahoma and people in Alabama, they
- 16:31Speaker 5: don't take losing. They're not going to lose. No.
- 16:34Speaker 11: No.
- 16:35Speaker 5: And it's talking to those people. They're not going to lose.
- 16:37Speaker 4: So I'm– And Alabama may lose more this year.
- 16:41Speaker 5: They might with a new quarterback. I'm still not sold
- 16:46Speaker 5: on Brent Venables as a head coach.
- 16:48Speaker 9: I'm with you, but their defense is really, really good.
- 16:51Speaker 5: I'm not saying that. He's a great defensive coach. He's
- 16:55Speaker 5: been an elite-level defensive coach for 30 years.
- 16:59Speaker 9: I guarantee you, all the Oklahoma people are with you.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Most of the fans are with you. I don't know.
- 17:03Speaker 5: If he's a head coach. I'm with you. And I'm
- 17:05Speaker 5: still not sold on his quarterback. Healthy, unhealthy, bad thumb,
- 17:12Speaker 5: good thumb. I'm with you. I'm not sold on his quarterback.
- 17:15Speaker 9: But they're a perfect example of what's called summer hype. Suddenly,
- 17:19Speaker 9: Mateer's got his thumb. Suddenly, he's got the golden thumb.
- 17:24Speaker 9: He can raise flowers.
- 17:25Speaker 5: He can do anything. So we'll see. I'm not sold
- 17:28Speaker 5: on him.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Is that a green thumb or a golden thumb?
- 17:31Speaker 5: Green thumb, whatever, yeah. I was having this conversation.
- 17:34Speaker 4: My Neal Sperry goes like that.
- 17:37Speaker 5: He had a red thumb last year. Neal Sperry reference, man.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I like that. He had a red thumb last year because...
- 17:43Speaker 5: It wasn't good. I had this conversation with Dusty today.
- 17:50Speaker 5: The one thing Coach Leach always said is, what do
- 17:55Speaker 5: you look for? His number one and only answer was accuracy.
- 18:00Speaker 5: If he's not accurate, I can't use him. If he is,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I can teach him everything else. But if he's not accurate,
- 18:08Speaker 5: I can't use him.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah, because Keith Berry didn't have a huge arm.
- 18:11Speaker 9: A lot of Leach's quarterbacks didn't, but they were out.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Most of them didn't. They didn't go to the NFL.
- 18:17Speaker 5: The reason I had this conversation is I was talking
- 18:23Speaker 5: about Arch Manning, and I'm not convinced that Arch Manning
- 18:29Speaker 5: is an accurate passer. Now, I understand the first half
- 18:33Speaker 5: of the season, he's running for his life. We have
- 18:36Speaker 5: seen A & M quarterbacks who were quick on the
- 18:39Speaker 5: trigger because they were having to get rid of the
- 18:42Speaker 5: ball as soon as it was snapped before. We've seen
- 18:45Speaker 5: all of that, and I understand that part of it.
- 18:51Speaker 5: If I'm a Texas fan, my concern would be, Yes,
- 18:56Speaker 5: he can throw the ball 40 yards down the field
- 18:58Speaker 5: and zip it between two defenders and make a beautiful throw.
- 19:02Speaker 5: And on the next one, on a 10-yard out route,
- 19:05Speaker 5: he'll bounce it at a guy's feet. And I know
- 19:09Speaker 5: all quarterbacks aren't 100%. I get that. But that would
- 19:15Speaker 5: concern me about that and leads me to Marcel.
- 19:20Speaker 11: Marcel.
- 19:21Speaker 5: I've seen some inconsistencies. They're rusty. That's what Rusty said. Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 4: That's my issue with him is, like, can he be,
- 19:29Speaker 4: can he hit?
- 19:30Speaker 5: Can he hit an open receiver down the field?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Can he hit the 12-yard pass?
- 19:34Speaker 5: Either the 12-yard out, or can he hit a 30-yard
- 19:37Speaker 5: slant when there's no one around?
- 19:40Speaker 4: We've seen him hit that quite a bit.
- 19:42Speaker 11: We have.
- 19:43Speaker 4: But what concerns me is that you can't hit the
- 19:46Speaker 4: 12-yard curl. That's what just really.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Got to hit. that. You've got to.
- 19:51Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 5: And you've got to move the chains.
- 19:53Speaker 4: And against South Carolina, he was just gunslinging, and he
- 19:56Speaker 4: had to because they were so far down.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:59Speaker 4: And he made some really nice passes in the corner
- 20:01Speaker 4: end zone.
- 20:01Speaker 5: He did.
- 20:02Speaker 4: But, you know, again, I go back to Texas, and
- 20:04Speaker 4: some of his decisions were just terrible.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Okay, take Miami out of it because of the conditions.
- 20:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 4: But Texas, that game, he just came out in the
- 20:13Speaker 4: second half and looked so inept.
- 20:15Speaker 5: I think I've said this to Rusty before, but you
- 20:17Speaker 5: need to let that game go.
- 20:22Speaker 4: It's a new season. We've only got this small context, man.
- 20:29Speaker 4: We can go back to 2011 if you tell me
- 20:31Speaker 4: to let it go.
- 20:32Speaker 5: It's a new season.
- 20:34Speaker 9: Here's the deal. Both you guys are right. Sometimes we.
- 20:39Speaker 5: We almost talk too much. Take A & M Texas
- 20:41Speaker 5: last year, A & M Texas this year.
- 20:43Speaker 9: Okay, who's going to be able to run the ball?
- 20:45Speaker 9: You talked about Texas sucked last year. They didn't have
- 20:47Speaker 9: any linemen. A & M had great linemen.
- 20:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Right there. Who had the down? Right.
- 20:51Speaker 9: And then who had the better quarterback? I'm with both
- 20:53Speaker 9: you guys. Manning struggled at times. Reed struggled at times.
- 20:57Speaker 4: In that game, Manning was better.
- 20:59Speaker 5: He was.
- 20:59Speaker 9: In that game, but overall for the season, A &
- 21:01Speaker 9: M' s offensive line and Reed was better than Texas' offensive
- 21:05Speaker 9: line and Manning.
- 21:06Speaker 5: And you can probably say whoever's better in that this
- 21:08Speaker 5: year might win it.
- 21:09Speaker 4: But what Manning did so well in that game is
- 21:11Speaker 4: use his legs.
- 21:12Speaker 11: Yes.
- 21:12Speaker 4: And that's what Marcel did.
- 21:14Speaker 5: I think we're going to see that more from Marcel
- 21:16Speaker 5: this year with home and wickets. And if we do,
- 21:18Speaker 5: I think it's going to benefit him. He has hinted wickets.
- 21:24Speaker 5: He's been available. More bootleg. More rollouts. More movement from
- 21:28Speaker 5: the pocket. That's good. Get the quarterback out, right? Don't
- 21:31Speaker 5: make him a pocket passer. I like that.
- 21:34Speaker 11: I do, too.
- 21:34Speaker 9: Because when Manning– Decided to go. They were a big place.
- 21:37Speaker 9: You even go back to two years ago when he
- 21:39Speaker 9: had the touchdown run. I mean, he made the right call.
- 21:42Speaker 9: He ran the ball. And sometimes you're watching up there
- 21:45Speaker 9: and you go like, run, Marcel.
- 21:48Speaker 5: Why isn't he running?
- 21:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think Manning has the more upside in
- 21:53Speaker 4: terms of the pure passer than Marcel does. We'll see.
- 21:57Speaker 4: I mean, he has to prove it. But, I mean,
- 22:00Speaker 4: we were talking about this. Louie and I were talking
- 22:01Speaker 4: about this the other day. If you're picking a quarterback,
- 22:05Speaker 4: number one in the NFL, out of this year's class,
- 22:09Speaker 4: there are some pretty good ones. There are. But based
- 22:15Speaker 4: on how much improvement he made, I'm really curious to
- 22:18Speaker 4: see what Manning does this year.
- 22:20Speaker 5: I've seen some current lists. Rusty, that have him as
- 22:25Speaker 5: the top guy. I've also seen lists that have him
- 22:28Speaker 5: like as the five or the six guy. Yeah, me too. Right?
- 22:31Speaker 9: Coleman's going to be a great addition to him. And
- 22:33Speaker 9: you touched on it, Chip. I am very interested to
- 22:36Speaker 9: see what Wiggins is.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Going to do.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Honestly, if you ask me too, I've got to check
- 22:43Speaker 4: out what Hoover's going to do at Indiana. That's a
- 22:46Speaker 4: good point. Because what Mendoza did last year, coming from
- 22:50Speaker 4: where he had been And I watched TCU this last week,
- 22:53Speaker 4: and that quarterback didn't look very good at all.
- 22:57Speaker 5: He was terrible.
- 22:59Speaker 4: He made some bad decisions, and TCU just kind of
- 23:01Speaker 4: gave that ball away.
- 23:01Speaker 5: I said in the first hour, I'm anxious to see
- 23:04Speaker 5: Cignetti and his staff with Josh Hooper. That's a good point.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Yeah, my point is that. Because what they did with Mendoza.
- 23:12Speaker 9: Because it gets back to what you said.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Because Hoover made a lot of great plays. He also
- 23:16Speaker 4: threw a lot of interceptions.
- 23:17Speaker 5: He did. A lot of interceptions. And Signetti won't put
- 23:20Speaker 5: up with that. No, he won't.
- 23:21Speaker 9: You knew Mike Leach was going to have a quarterback.
- 23:23Speaker 5: No matter who. Always. Always.
- 23:25Speaker 9: And I'm interested to see what Signetti does as well because.
- 23:29Speaker 5: If he turns Josh Hoover into half of what Mendoza was,
- 23:32Speaker 5: he's going to be good again.
- 23:34Speaker 9: You better look out then. If that guy can do that,
- 23:35Speaker 9: he's going to get quarterbacks there to go all the time.
- 23:37Speaker 5: No doubt.
- 23:38Speaker 4: He's going to be the quarterback whisperer.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just saw a thing that Reese
- 23:43Speaker 5: Davis did with all these coaches.
- 23:46Speaker 9: He went to Lubbock.
- 23:48Speaker 5: He went to Florida State. He went to Ole Miss.
- 23:52Speaker 5: And he went to Indiana with Cignetti. And they're watching film.
- 23:57Speaker 5: And Cignetti's like, look, I don't golf. I don't fish.
- 24:03Speaker 5: He went through all the hobbies that some coaches might
- 24:06Speaker 5: or might not have. He said, this is what I do.
- 24:08Speaker 5: He goes, I watch film. He goes, that's all I
- 24:12Speaker 5: do is I watch film. And you know what? I
- 24:16Speaker 5: believe him. I believe him.
- 24:18Speaker 9: Hey, you guys, I just watched like a quarter and
- 24:20Speaker 9: a half of the TCU game. Did they ever show
- 24:22Speaker 9: Belichick's girlfriend?
- 24:23Speaker 4: No, I didn't see it.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I don't think they ever did.
- 24:26Speaker 9: It's like when you watch Dallas Cowboys, how many times
- 24:28Speaker 9: they show Jerry.
- 24:29Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 24:29Speaker 9: I always liked those things, you know.
- 24:32Speaker 4: But to go back to the quarterbacks, we had this
- 24:34Speaker 4: discussion the other day. If you're ranking the SEC quarterbacks,
- 24:38Speaker 4: is it Manning or is it Chambliss?
- 24:40Speaker 5: I love looking at those ratings. I'm with you.
- 24:43Speaker 9: It's pretty hard when you're looking at 16 quarterbacks.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I mean, to me, those two quarterbacks stand out heading
- 24:49Speaker 4: into the year.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:51Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Who do you have? So, Chambliss doesn't have the size
- 24:58Speaker 5: that NFL thinks they need. Now, that's changed over the years.
- 25:02Speaker 4: We're talking about college, right?
- 25:03Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:03Speaker 5: We're talking about college. I'm a huge Chambliss guy.
- 25:06Speaker 9: I'd put Chambliss number one if I was doing it.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're drafting NFL, I'd probably pick Manning. But
- 25:12Speaker 4: if you're drafting for a college quarterback, I'd take Chambliss
- 25:14Speaker 4: right now. I think he's farther around than what he.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Did last year. No doubt. Yeah. And he's played longer,
- 25:20Speaker 5: I guess. He's played a long time, yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Anything else, I mean, Lenore Sellers, who knows what we're
- 25:25Speaker 4: going to get there, right?
- 25:27Speaker 5: Yeah, and his name hasn't been mentioned at all. Remember
- 25:30Speaker 5: last year at this time, he was a Heisman Trophy candidate, right?
- 25:34Speaker 5: So that's going to be interesting because he needs to
- 25:37Speaker 5: be that for... For them to be successful. For them
- 25:42Speaker 5: to be decent, right?
- 25:43Speaker 9: Put a lot of money in him coming back, I'm sure.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and then Gunnar Stockton. I mean, what do we
- 25:47Speaker 4: expect from him?
- 25:48Speaker 5: Well, I think Gunnar Stockton is pretty good. And Gunnar
- 25:52Speaker 5: Stockton has a lot of help around him. Yes, he does. Right? Yes,
- 25:55Speaker 5: he does. I mean, a lot of help around him.
- 25:57Speaker 5: In the booth and on the field. I'm on record.
- 26:00Speaker 5: I picked Georgia to win the league again. And, you know, I...
- 26:04Speaker 5: We'll just see.
- 26:05Speaker 4: And with LSU, I don't know what we're going to
- 26:07Speaker 4: get with Sam Leavitt. I don't know what we're going
- 26:09Speaker 4: to get with LSU in general either. I mean, it's
- 26:11Speaker 4: just going to be who knows what Lane's got up
- 26:15Speaker 4: his sleeve, right?
- 26:17Speaker 9: Well, Lane has a little bit of Mike Leach in
- 26:21Speaker 9: him that he usually has a good offense. He usually
- 26:23Speaker 9: finds a way to put points on the board, whether
- 26:26Speaker 9: it's a running quarterback or a throwing quarterback. Look what
- 26:29Speaker 9: he did with Dart. You look what he did even
- 26:32Speaker 9: though he's a Florida Atlantic. He's got to move the football.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Yeah, you know he is.
- 26:37Speaker 9: And, you know, he's so much better for LSU than
- 26:41Speaker 9: Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly was just a horrible fit. And
- 26:47Speaker 9: you look at the players he's brought in around his quarterback.
- 26:52Speaker 9: He did their offensive line.
- 26:54Speaker 5: You expect them to be good offensively. Expect them to
- 26:56Speaker 5: be good.
- 26:57Speaker 9: And I can't tell. if A & M is a
- 26:59Speaker 9: break catching them early or not. I think, you know,
- 27:02Speaker 9: September 26th is kind of early. You don't have that.
- 27:06Speaker 9: They'll be coming off that.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Ole Miss game. They'll have that early. So we're going
- 27:11Speaker 5: to take a break. I want to talk about this
- 27:13Speaker 5: whole situation, which is I don't understand because I'm not
- 27:16Speaker 5: an attorney. I don't either. Thursday, everybody's in court on Thursday.
- 27:21Speaker 5: And apparently it's going to be up to one judge.
- 27:23Speaker 5: to decide where we go from here in college football.
- 27:26Speaker 5: I mean, that's the way I... For now. For now.
- 27:28Speaker 5: All right, we'll take a break. Writer's Roundtable is brought

- 31:03Speaker 5: Back Samantha Black, thanks for being with us on this Monday.
- 31:08Speaker 5: Brought to you by Intec and First Financial Bank. Rusty
- 31:11Speaker 5: Burson is here. Robert Sesson is here. You mentioned you
- 31:14Speaker 5: didn't watch a lot of which game was it? The
- 31:17Speaker 5: TCU game. You didn't see a lot of that. TCU
- 31:21Speaker 5: is going to be begging people to come to their
- 31:25Speaker 5: games and giving credentials away to everybody after this weekend.
- 31:29Speaker 4: It's a bad weekend for TCU.
- 31:30Speaker 5: It was a really, really bad weekend for Sonny Dykes.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Bad look for everything in the football program. Bad look.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Really terrible. Really terrible.
- 31:38Speaker 4: It's that whole media thing.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Yeah, we're enemies. We're horrible.
- 31:42Speaker 4: The pettiness of it.
- 31:44Speaker 9: I thought those days were over.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Did you watch?
- 31:47Speaker 4: I didn't even know the Fort Worth Star-Telgram existed. That's
- 31:49Speaker 4: the thing.
- 31:50Speaker 5: That's not good. No. Don't tell Mike Engel that. We
- 31:55Speaker 5: print the Fort Worth Star-Telgram. You do? Yeah, three times
- 31:58Speaker 5: a week.
- 32:00Speaker 4: And they ship it up to Fort Worth?
- 32:02Speaker 5: Y'all print it?
- 32:03Speaker 9: We print it here, and they're going to take it back.
- 32:07Speaker 11: Wow.
- 32:07Speaker 5: Did you watch football? I watched a little bit of
- 32:09Speaker 5: the Memphis game. So that was the best game, I think.
- 32:12Speaker 5: I went to bed, unfortunately.
- 32:14Speaker 4: I watched TCU North Carolina.
- 32:15Speaker 5: That was about it.
- 32:16Speaker 4: That was about it.
- 32:16Speaker 5: Did you watch Florida State? Just a wee little bit.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Not really good. No, they didn't look good when I
- 32:21Speaker 5: saw them. Not good for Mike Norvell. The problem at
- 32:24Speaker 5: Florida State is, number one, even before the season, the
- 32:27Speaker 5: reason he's still there, they don't have the money. They
- 32:29Speaker 5: spent a ton of money, and I didn't know this,
- 32:33Speaker 5: redoing all the players' games. They have a huge, brand-new,
- 32:38Speaker 5: state-of-the-art players facility, right? So they don't have the money
- 32:42Speaker 5: right now to fire him. Florida State did not look good.
- 32:46Speaker 5: They host SMU Saturday. They better be really much better
- 32:51Speaker 5: or they'll get their butts beat on Saturday by SMU. Second, USC,
- 32:58Speaker 5: Lincoln Riley on the hot seat hired Gary Patterson for defense.
- 33:03Speaker 5: I'm a big Gary Patterson fan, especially as a defensive coach.
- 33:07Speaker 5: They gave up 28 to San Jose State on Saturday. Offensively,
- 33:12Speaker 5: they got dudes everywhere. They look like an NFL team.
- 33:17Speaker 5: They have athletes defensively, but they look like at least Saturday,
- 33:22Speaker 5: the same old USC defense that has gotten Lincoln Riley
- 33:26Speaker 5: in trouble before.
- 33:27Speaker 4: I watched a little bit of that. I was kind
- 33:29Speaker 4: of flipping back between that, North Carolina State and Virginia.
- 33:32Speaker 5: And North Carolina State looked terrible.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Yeah, they did.
- 33:35Speaker 9: I watched a little bit of that game. Enough to
- 33:36Speaker 9: say I'm not going to watch anymore.
- 33:37Speaker 5: North Carolina State, some people were like dark horse picks
- 33:41Speaker 5: to win a lot of games this year. And I'm
- 33:43Speaker 5: just going, well, maybe they will. I don't think so.
- 33:47Speaker 5: They didn't look very good.
- 33:48Speaker 4: The ACC, boy, I'm not sure who's there.
- 33:51Speaker 5: Miami.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Yeah, obviously Miami.
- 33:54Speaker 9: What I don't like about USC when it all comes
- 33:57Speaker 9: down to it is Lincoln Riley hasn't really proved to
- 33:59Speaker 9: me he can do it, and I don't like their
- 34:01Speaker 9: travel in the Big Ten. That eventually, I think, comes
- 34:04Speaker 9: back to bite them in the butt if they even
- 34:06Speaker 9: get close. When you're out there kind of by yourself,
- 34:10Speaker 9: I think them and Oregon, that's a tough fit.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I just turned that game on and I was like,
- 34:16Speaker 4: oh my gosh, what a beautiful setting.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Which one?
- 34:20Speaker 11: USC.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but it was hot.
- 34:21Speaker 5: Really hot.
- 34:26Speaker 4: It looked like Hawaii almost.
- 34:28Speaker 5: It was so bright out there. Yes.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Those colors.
- 34:31Speaker 5: The grass was so good. There was an announced crowd
- 34:35Speaker 5: in the Coliseum of 51,400. It looked like the old
- 34:39Speaker 5: basketball announced crowds here. Rita Rita. Yeah, Rita Rita. Yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 5: when there was actually 15. And today, they're sending out basically, hey,
- 34:49Speaker 5: thanks for the fans that were there and It was
- 34:52Speaker 5: really hot. You hate those kind of notes. Oh, man.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I don't think you're doing yourself any good when you
- 34:59Speaker 5: acknowledge the fact that no one's coming to your games.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Here is the statement. We understand the factors that impacted
- 35:08Speaker 5: Saturday's attendance. We have high expectations at a premier home
- 35:14Speaker 5: schedule this season. We know the competitive advantage an electric
- 35:20Speaker 5: Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. That was back in
- 35:24Speaker 5: Reggie Bush's days. I don't think Will Ferrell was on
- 35:28Speaker 5: the sidelines for this game. We thank our fans who
- 35:32Speaker 5: showed up Saturday.
- 35:33Speaker 4: What about Snoop Dogg?
- 35:34Speaker 5: I don't think the Snoop was there. And look forward
- 35:37Speaker 5: to seeing increased attendance the rest of this season. What
- 35:41Speaker 5: kind of statement is that?
- 35:43Speaker 4: That's horrible.
- 35:45Speaker 5: You just ignore that. It's like TCU taking away the credentials.
- 35:51Speaker 5: That's so stupid. You can't win that.
- 35:55Speaker 9: PR. Sometimes you always wonder who is.
- 35:58Speaker 5: Running the show. Somebody's getting paid a lot of money
- 36:01Speaker 5: to put this out because they have to react to
- 36:06Speaker 5: social media. Because all over social media there's pictures of
- 36:11Speaker 5: a two-thirds empty coliseum with with this top 20 team
- 36:15Speaker 5: play right everywhere and people and of course mostly they're
- 36:20Speaker 5: not their own fans there are other people's fans that
- 36:23Speaker 5: are making these snarky con you know comments it's like
- 36:27Speaker 5: let it go don't respond that's.
- 36:29Speaker 9: The problem is what's going to be the fort worth
- 36:32Speaker 9: deal just let it go it's good you know.
- 36:35Speaker 5: The fact that you do it and then you You
- 36:37Speaker 5: compound your mistake. Even though you.
- 36:39Speaker 9: Saw we were horrible, let me explain why we weren't horrible.
- 36:43Speaker 5: I tell you, I tweeted out that I'm beginning to
- 36:47Speaker 5: think that this locker room incident is a reflection of
- 36:52Speaker 5: deeper issues within that program. At TCU?
- 36:55Speaker 10: Yes.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Now, maybe not. Maybe it's first game. And remember last
- 37:00Speaker 5: year was Iowa State and Kansas State. That was an
- 37:03Speaker 5: even uglier game. And it turned out both those teams
- 37:05Speaker 5: were bad last year, right?
- 37:06Speaker 4: Yes, right.
- 37:07Speaker 5: And I think both the teams are bad this year.
- 37:10Speaker 4: A little bit better than they were last year. A
- 37:12Speaker 4: little better than last year.
- 37:13Speaker 5: They look like a junior high team. Right. This year,
- 37:16Speaker 5: they look much better. No question. But is TCU better
- 37:19Speaker 5: or are they worse? Sonny is getting lit up right now.
- 37:23Speaker 9: Well, he just got a contract extension.
- 37:25Speaker 5: He just got a contract extension. Why did you do that?
- 37:28Speaker 5: Why did you give him an extension? Yeah, exactly. Why
- 37:30Speaker 5: did you? Afraid of losing him? They just gave... Brent Venables,
- 37:36Speaker 5: a huge contract extension.
- 37:38Speaker 10: Really?
- 37:39Speaker 5: Huge.
- 37:39Speaker 9: I always want to go, who's going to hire him?
- 37:41Speaker 5: And I'm going, why? He was already signed for the
- 37:46Speaker 5: next four years, I think. And now they extended that
- 37:49Speaker 5: like three years at $ 10 million plus. And I'm going, why?
- 37:52Speaker 9: He's not going to leave.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Where's he going? I don't know.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Is Bill Byrne the AD there?
- 38:00Speaker 5: Here's the deal is... I'm sorry, man. Jimbo Fisher didn't
- 38:03Speaker 5: go to LSU. A & M kept him from going.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Well, Fran didn't go to Notre Dame.
- 38:08Speaker 5: Notre Dame.
- 38:09Speaker 11: Oh, man.
- 38:09Speaker 5: I don't know why these schools... But they never called either. No,
- 38:12Speaker 5: they didn't.
- 38:12Speaker 9: I don't know why they do it. That just drives
- 38:15Speaker 9: me crazy.
- 38:16Speaker 5: Because, like I said... I'll be the first to admit,
- 38:20Speaker 5: if OU is in the top five and they're in
- 38:22Speaker 5: the playoffs again and they win a couple of playoff games,
- 38:25Speaker 5: I'll say, okay, he's got this thing turned around, right?
- 38:29Speaker 5: Good on him. But I got to see it. And
- 38:32Speaker 5: I ain't going to give him three years at $ 35
- 38:35Speaker 5: million extra upon what he already has. I want to
- 38:39Speaker 5: see it. They get one year and they get that.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Just think.
- 38:42Speaker 5: I don't get it.
- 38:43Speaker 9: If you got one more week for every good show,
- 38:45Speaker 9: you'd be on the 3,000 show.
- 38:47Speaker 5: I mean, holy cow. I will say again, I try
- 38:50Speaker 5: my best to do one good show a week. And
- 38:53Speaker 5: sometimes it happens.
- 38:55Speaker 9: You should be a football coach.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Today ain't it.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Oh, come on, man.
- 38:59Speaker 5: No, it's not your fault. Because of us. It's not
- 39:01Speaker 5: your fault. Usually it's the best day of the week.
- 39:04Speaker 5: And we go like, does people notice that? You know,
- 39:08Speaker 5: it's like, okay, when Sherman— I'll tell you when they
- 39:10Speaker 5: notice it, Cease. When the football tickets go up 33%. Exactly.
- 39:16Speaker 5: That's when they notice it.
- 39:17Speaker 9: Everybody— I keep looking at people's salaries, and everybody's basically making
- 39:21Speaker 9: $ 10 million to $ 13 million.
- 39:22Speaker 5: That's right. That's the going rate.
- 39:23Speaker 9: And I'm saying, like, you guys all can't win.
- 39:26Speaker 5: And by the way, I don't have a problem with
- 39:29Speaker 5: what they make. It's just like I don't have a
- 39:31Speaker 5: problem with what the players make. We're in America. You
- 39:33Speaker 5: can make what you want to make. God bless you.
- 39:35Speaker 5: But if I'm the athletic director, I'm going to be
- 39:37Speaker 5: a little bit more careful than that. At least I
- 39:40Speaker 5: will be.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Well, there's no doubt. I mean, A & M gave
- 39:43Speaker 4: way too many extensions to way too many coaches. After, like,
- 39:47Speaker 4: one good season. Like, they gave the extension to someone.
- 39:49Speaker 5: Everybody gets excited. Yeah, it's just, like, it's ridiculous. I mean,
- 39:53Speaker 5: let's see it proven out. See, did not Elko get, like,
- 40:00Speaker 5: a raise? Elko got a raise after a small extension.
- 40:04Speaker 5: And there it was.
- 40:05Speaker 9: Everyone was worried about Penn State. And I go, like,
- 40:08Speaker 9: to myself, he's not going to Penn State. And people go, oh,
- 40:11Speaker 9: you don't know that. He could have gone.
- 40:13Speaker 5: And I go.
- 40:15Speaker 9: Okay, I mean.
- 40:16Speaker 4: Well, and they gave Bucky McMillan a bump, too, because,
- 40:18Speaker 4: I mean, obviously he.
- 40:20Speaker 5: Did really well. I'm more for that than the football side.
- 40:24Speaker 5: I'm going back to what you said. It's not that
- 40:26Speaker 5: I don't grudge anybody.
- 40:28Speaker 9: But as soon as A & M.
- 40:30Speaker 5: Football coach wins, they want to give him more money.
- 40:32Speaker 5: A season.
- 40:33Speaker 9: And then, let's be honest, what does Elko come out
- 40:36Speaker 9: and say? We need to have good back-to-back seasons to.
- 40:39Speaker 5: Prove who we are.
- 40:40Speaker 9: So even he's saying... Basically, I need to have good
- 40:44Speaker 9: back-to-back season, which is true. He knows that. But no
- 40:46Speaker 9: one's going to turn money away. If somebody comes in,
- 40:49Speaker 9: Ben Downs comes in, hey, Chip, we want to sign
- 40:51Speaker 9: you for 50 years.
- 40:52Speaker 5: You're going to die here. I wish Ben knew I
- 40:54Speaker 5: had a show. I might be better off. We'll take
- 40:57Speaker 5: a break. We'll come back.
- 40:59Speaker 9: He was out at the USC game one weekend.
- 41:01Speaker 5: No, no one was. We're brought to you by Intec

- 42:19Speaker 13: Ending the grueling six-game road trip on somewhat of a
- 42:21Speaker 13: high note following last night's win over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4.
- 42:25Speaker 4: The 1-1 pitch, and that ball is hit hard to
- 42:26Speaker 4: deep left.
- 42:27Speaker 10: Churrio going back, it's over his head, off the track,
- 42:29Speaker 10: and it rolls up over the wall. Looked like it
- 42:32Speaker 10: was going to bounce back into the field of play,
- 42:34Speaker 10: but it actually rolled over the wall and out. It's
- 42:37Speaker 10: an automatic double for Duran that scores two, and the
- 42:40Speaker 10: Rangers have their first lead today, and their first lead
- 42:43Speaker 10: of the series, 4-2.
- 42:45Speaker 13: This season's Rangers' most valuable player, Ezekiel Durant, knocked in
- 42:48Speaker 13: three runs going 205 from the plate with a home run.
- 42:51Speaker 13: Starter Kumar Rucker struggled as he hit the 80-plus pitch
- 42:54Speaker 13: mark in just three innings, allowing four hits, two runs,
- 42:56Speaker 13: and four walks despite the seven strikeouts. Tonight they begin
- 42:59Speaker 13: a seven-game homestand that features the Athletics and the Tampa
- 43:02Speaker 13: Bay Rays. First pitch at the Globe is set for 7.05
- 43:05Speaker 13: with Jacob DeGrom on the bump versus Gage Jump. With
- 43:08Speaker 13: your Texas Rangers report, I'm Kevin Walker.

- 43:37Speaker 5: In College Station. Brazos Running Company. It's a song reportedly
- 43:53Speaker 5: written in Austin, Texas, when Jimmy Buffett and Jerry Jeff
- 43:56Speaker 5: Walker were hanging around together. Welcome back. Robert Sesson is here.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Rusty Burson is here. This LSU Situation Boys Thursday will
- 44:06Speaker 5: be the next court battle. And Ross Dellinger, who.
- 44:12Speaker 9: Ross is really good.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Pretty good reporter, right? Has his finger on the pulse.
- 44:16Speaker 5: He's got his sources. Ross is a hard worker. He
- 44:19Speaker 5: quotes a conference member representative. He didn't say if it's
- 44:25Speaker 5: a president, a chancellor, a spokesperson. He didn't say. But
- 44:28Speaker 5: it's not a janitor. It's an interesting quote. There are
- 44:32Speaker 5: plenty of other schools. This is an SEC school official.
- 44:37Speaker 5: There are plenty of other schools who will take their place,
- 44:41Speaker 5: meaning LSU. Is that the threat we've come to?
- 44:46Speaker 11: No.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I mean, there are, and Dellinger had already said, there
- 44:51Speaker 5: are high-level talks about some serious stuff going on within
- 44:55Speaker 5: this league right now. Okay? SEC school executives are exploring
- 45:01Speaker 5: extreme measures, says Dellinger, to address LSU plans to add
- 45:06Speaker 5: former pro players, including boycotting competition. That's not going to work.
- 45:13Speaker 5: We've already seen the Texas Tech thing. There are... ESPN
- 45:18Speaker 5: controls all the TV. So they're not doing away with that.
- 45:23Speaker 5: They're not taking A & M and LSU off TV
- 45:25Speaker 5: in three weeks. Original radio. Sanctioning the schools with probation
- 45:31Speaker 5: or expulsion and filing a federal legal challenge, which is
- 45:37Speaker 5: going to happen either way on the decision Thursday. So
- 45:45Speaker 5: it's going to be And Elko said it last week.
- 45:49Speaker 5: Drakewood said it this week. He called it a clown show.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Elko said it's ridiculous last Thursday that we're two days
- 45:58Speaker 5: from starting the football season and we don't know what
- 46:01Speaker 5: the rules are, right?
- 46:03Speaker 9: Well, once again, you read all that stuff. I go
- 46:06Speaker 9: back to when they come out and they said, okay,
- 46:08Speaker 9: they're going to do five years, let everybody have five
- 46:11Speaker 9: years of eligibility. Okay, you had to know what about
- 46:15Speaker 9: the retro? You can't come in here and say, like,
- 46:19Speaker 9: we're going to give everybody in this room $ 10, 000 extra.
- 46:23Speaker 9: What about the guys last week who was just in here? Oh,
- 46:26Speaker 9: that doesn't include them. It just includes you guys. Whenever
- 46:29Speaker 9: you do something like that, unless you've got everything tied down,
- 46:33Speaker 9: there's always going to be somebody have a lawsuit that,
- 46:37Speaker 9: you know, you should have done it differently.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's ridiculous. Every week there's something new. Let's go
- 46:45Speaker 4: play the games.
- 46:46Speaker 5: So Kiffin reportedly says, and I don't believe this, that
- 46:52Speaker 5: I checked with the other players because that's been the thing.
- 46:56Speaker 5: Other coaches have said, look, you've got guys that have
- 46:59Speaker 5: been grinding in this heat now for six weeks. And
- 47:02Speaker 5: you're going to tell them we're bringing in an NFL
- 47:05Speaker 5: player at your position?
- 47:07Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 47:09Speaker 9: That's not good for the locker room.
- 47:10Speaker 4: It's not good for morale.
- 47:13Speaker 5: And they're getting paid how much versus me? It's going
- 47:15Speaker 5: to get back.
- 47:16Speaker 9: That's why colleges don't want out what these players are making.
- 47:19Speaker 9: Because you don't want to be out like, okay, how
- 47:21Speaker 9: much is, for example, how much is.
- 47:23Speaker 5: A & M' s?
- 47:24Speaker 9: A place kicker that transferred, how much is he making
- 47:26Speaker 9: versus a freshman that came in?
- 47:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 9: Once again, people don't want to out there what people
- 47:30Speaker 9: are making because suddenly they're going to look, well, hey,
- 47:33Speaker 9: he's making more than that guy.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Well, it goes back to like you get a scholarship player.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Back in the old day, you get a scholarship player
- 47:38Speaker 4: the chance before the walk-on because you'd invest money in that.
- 47:41Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 47:42Speaker 4: So if you've invested this much money in the kicker,
- 47:45Speaker 4: you've got to give him the first opportunity versus the freshman.
- 47:48Speaker 9: And the running back that was on scholarship, you're always
- 47:51Speaker 9: sliding him money underneath the table. And so if he
- 47:53Speaker 9: doesn't produce, you're really losing double. And right now, I
- 47:57Speaker 9: get it. Money is out there. Everyone knows what they're
- 48:00Speaker 9: being paid, but it's not public knowledge. We don't know
- 48:04Speaker 9: what they do. And eventually, something like this could really
- 48:07Speaker 9: come back to hurt everyone because It's like, hey, how
- 48:11Speaker 9: much is that guy beside me making?
- 48:13Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 5: Kiffin has already clarified these guys can practice. They cannot
- 48:21Speaker 5: be part yet of the 105-man roster until this decision
- 48:25Speaker 5: Thursday is made. Well, that was nice of him. Lane
- 48:28Speaker 5: says we're waiting. What we're waiting for is clarity this
- 48:33Speaker 5: week from the SEC, which they can't give final clarity
- 48:36Speaker 5: until Thursday's ruling.
- 48:38Speaker 4: My prediction is he'll play against A & M and
- 48:40Speaker 4: the next week can be pulled.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Like Patti Ako?
- 48:43Speaker 9: So Lane's got all those guys in a different lane.
- 48:46Speaker 5: Yeah. Did you see the Dr. Pepper commercial this week? Oh,
- 48:49Speaker 5: that was awesome. That was awesome. That was awesome. Phenomenal. Yeah,
- 48:52Speaker 5: it was awesome. You're in the wrong lane. He got
- 48:55Speaker 5: pulled over for being in the wrong lane. Awesome. Boss
- 48:57Speaker 5: is telling him you're in the wrong lane.
- 48:59Speaker 9: And you know what else he does? He puts the
- 49:01Speaker 9: window up.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Yeah, he just rolls the window up. It's a great commercial.
- 49:04Speaker 9: He felt it was the SEC. He just put the
- 49:06Speaker 9: window up.
- 49:07Speaker 5: He does a door dash. I haven't seen that one. No, no.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Who was the Florida State quarterback that stole the crabs?
- 49:15Speaker 5: James Winston. James Winston's in the commercial getting a plate
- 49:19Speaker 5: full of crabs. Redsy Bush is standing on the balcony
- 49:23Speaker 5: of a huge mansion going, this is a nice house.
- 49:26Speaker 5: And Lane is on the porch with DoorDash. It's awesome.
- 49:30Speaker 5: That is good. That is good. You want to laugh
- 49:32Speaker 5: at people's faces? Pay me.
- 49:35Speaker 9: Here's the deal.
- 49:35Speaker 4: It's like the SMU in the Trans Am, right?
- 49:38Speaker 5: Yes.
- 49:38Speaker 9: Yeah, we can sit here, but you know what?
- 49:40Speaker 5: We're going to go see a football game. No, no.
- 49:42Speaker 9: That's all that matters.
- 49:43Speaker 5: We get to talk about the game. That's all that matters.
- 49:45Speaker 9: I'm going to see players. Coaches are going to be there.
- 49:48Speaker 9: Fans are going to be there.
- 49:49Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
- 49:49Speaker 5: And we've already said. We're going to talk about the game.
- 49:51Speaker 5: It's going to be interesting to watch this year, and
- 49:54Speaker 5: I suspect it's going to be the same as last year.
- 49:58Speaker 5: They set some records last year. for attendance, for viewing.
- 50:04Speaker 5: So everybody that's saying it's ruining college football, it hasn't
- 50:08Speaker 5: done it yet. It's increased, in my mind, the national
- 50:16Speaker 5: broad perception of people that are on the fringe of
- 50:19Speaker 5: college football who are seeing all these headlines and on
- 50:23Speaker 5: national newscasts this stuff is making. So, so far, no
- 50:29Speaker 5: such thing as bad publicity. You're right. It's publicity.
- 50:33Speaker 9: Just announce the name of the school right.
- 50:35Speaker 4: Except for TCU. That was bad publicity.
- 50:38Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, you can't do that.
- 50:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that was the only bad thing.
- 50:40Speaker 5: No, no, there are certain things you cannot do.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 50:43Speaker 12: Right.
- 50:43Speaker 9: But then Sonny Dyches is going to say, I need
- 50:46Speaker 9: more money to go out and buy better players. We're
- 50:49Speaker 9: not spending $ 40 million.
- 50:50Speaker 5: Sonny's another one that has a contract.
- 50:52Speaker 4: He needs to buy better covers, I guess.
- 50:56Speaker 5: He needs better security in the locker room. And he
- 50:59Speaker 5: wants 10 more million dollars. I mean, he.
- 51:02Speaker 4: That's a train wreck right there.
- 51:04Speaker 5: It can be.
- 51:05Speaker 9: But I think what we're going to see is you
- 51:08Speaker 9: can see some quick train wrecks in college sports.
- 51:11Speaker 5: Well, that's one.
- 51:12Speaker 4: How quickly were they playing for the national championship?
- 51:14Speaker 5: Three years ago. Not that long ago. Yeah.
- 51:17Speaker 9: But they're not making $ 40 million to keep up.
- 51:21Speaker 5: And as his critics have pointed out, a lot of
- 51:25Speaker 5: those players were Gary Patterson's players. Very true. Very true.
- 51:28Speaker 5: Very true. So... Because you win one year.
- 51:32Speaker 4: That doesn't mean anything.
- 51:33Speaker 5: What did we just say? Chip and I were walking
- 51:35Speaker 5: over today, and I still go back. I've been in
- 51:37Speaker 5: the business a long time. Indiana won the national championship.
- 51:41Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 51:41Speaker 5: When you think that Indiana won the national championship. Which
- 51:44Speaker 5: puts pressure on everybody.
- 51:46Speaker 9: Which it can be done. The worst program ever.
- 51:48Speaker 5: It can be done. It can be done.
- 51:50Speaker 11: Right?
- 51:50Speaker 9: And everybody thinks. They were worse than Kansas State at
- 51:52Speaker 9: one time.
- 51:52Speaker 5: I want to be them. I want to be them.
- 51:54Speaker 4: And the hell of us won the national championship.
- 51:55Speaker 5: And the hell of us won the national championship.
- 51:57Speaker 9: I want to be them.
- 51:59Speaker 5: I do not want to be TCU. How can we
- 52:01Speaker 5: be Indiana?
- 52:01Speaker 9: I don't want to be TCU.
- 52:03Speaker 5: If Indiana can do it, anybody can do it.
- 52:05Speaker 9: Hey, right now, people want to be Texas Tech?
- 52:07Speaker 8: Yes.
- 52:08Speaker 4: Well, Texas Tech's going to be in the playoff.
- 52:10Speaker 5: They are.
- 52:10Speaker 4: There's no doubt. I mean, they're going to win.
- 52:12Speaker 5: Unless something weird happens.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Big 12, yeah.
- 52:15Speaker 5: They're going to win.
- 52:15Speaker 9: What if they could buy a new landscape?
- 52:17Speaker 5: They have like six of the top 100 players, and
- 52:23Speaker 5: all on defense, by the way. So they're going to
- 52:25Speaker 5: be nasty defensively.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Just like they were last year.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Just like they were last year. They're going to be
- 52:30Speaker 5: just as nasty. And I think you're right. Unless something
- 52:34Speaker 5: weird happens, Rusty, they will be in the playoffs.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, they had to really screw up.
- 52:39Speaker 5: I think I told Seth. Maybe it was Dusty I
- 52:42Speaker 5: told this. So, Cody Campbell, ats Mac Engel of the
- 52:48Speaker 5: Star-Telegram on Twitter Saturday, and says... Come on up. We
- 52:53Speaker 5: have plenty of room in our press box.
- 52:55Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 52:56Speaker 5: That's awesome. Well, you know what?
- 52:58Speaker 12: That's awesome.
- 52:59Speaker 4: That's a response to what TCU was doing on their
- 53:03Speaker 4: Twitter when Texas Tech was in the spotlight.
- 53:05Speaker 5: Correct.
- 53:06Speaker 4: Because they really went after Texas Tech.
- 53:08Speaker 5: Of course they did.
- 53:09Speaker 4: And, you know, the old back and forth here.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. I like that. It's a lot quieter now.
- 53:14Speaker 5: That's interesting. It's a lot quieter now.
- 53:16Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 53:18Speaker 5: The games this week aren't great, guys. I mean, I
- 53:22Speaker 5: like SMU Florida State. That's the Monday night game.
- 53:25Speaker 4: I think LSU is going to kill Clemson. You do?
- 53:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 4: I think Dabo is done.
- 53:32Speaker 5: Interesting.
- 53:32Speaker 9: I think this is a big game for Dabo. Because
- 53:35Speaker 9: he doesn't like to go to the transfer portal.
- 53:39Speaker 5: But he's done it now. He slid down. He's gone down.
- 53:42Speaker 5: We'll see. He's like Mike Krzyzewski who came out going, oh,
- 53:46Speaker 5: we're not taking what he does.
- 53:47Speaker 4: I just know that if Lane gets a chance to, yeah,
- 53:50Speaker 4: he's going to.
- 53:51Speaker 5: Put it on him?
- 53:51Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 5: Lane will put it on anybody. He'll put it on anybody. Yeah.
- 53:55Speaker 5: I just, I don't know what all, you can say
- 53:58Speaker 5: what you want. I don't know what all this stuff
- 54:00Speaker 5: has done. I can't believe it will have no effect
- 54:05Speaker 5: in that locker room. No, you're probably right. That's a
- 54:07Speaker 5: good point. And especially if they win Thursday and the
- 54:11Speaker 5: two NFL players come on the roster. And they're starting.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Take other people's spots. I can't imagine that that will
- 54:19Speaker 5: have no effect. That's a good point. That's a real
- 54:22Speaker 5: good point, Chip. So I'm looking at that game. I'm
- 54:25Speaker 5: looking at SMU, Florida State.
- 54:28Speaker 4: SMU is better, I think.
- 54:30Speaker 5: I do, too. And I'm looking at Louisville at Ole
- 54:32Speaker 5: Miss in Nashville. Ooh. Because I think Louisville is pretty good.
- 54:37Speaker 5: Baylor plays a game. Baylor and Auburn. Auburn, yeah. Last
- 54:40Speaker 5: year they played a close game in Waco. This one's
- 54:43Speaker 5: in Atlanta. I want to see what that one is.
- 54:45Speaker 5: I think Dave Aranda's done there.
- 54:48Speaker 4: He may be done there, right.
- 54:49Speaker 5: You're closer to that than I am.
- 54:51Speaker 4: They may switch. Baylor and TCU coaches may switch because
- 54:54Speaker 4: they like each other so much.
- 54:56Speaker 5: Can you imagine this year loser goes home? Yeah. I mean,
- 55:02Speaker 5: they do not like each other. No, they do not
- 55:04Speaker 5: like each other. Those Baptists and Christians do not get along.
- 55:07Speaker 4: The old holy war, yes.
- 55:09Speaker 5: That would be a good one. Boys, we'll have a
- 55:11Speaker 5: real game to talk about next Monday.
- 55:13Speaker 9: Well, unless a court ruling comes down.
- 55:15Speaker 5: Unless we don't play football this weekend. You never know.
- 55:18Speaker 5: Rusty Burson, Robert Sessna with us, brought to you each
- 55:22Speaker 5: week by First Financial Bank and InTech. I want to

- 55:39Speaker 5: You can shop online at davidgardnersjewelers.com, but that's not nearly
- 55:45Speaker 5: as fun. as going into the store and looking at
- 55:48Speaker 5: those cases and seeing some of the original DG designs
- 55:52Speaker 5: and some of the new Rolex and Tudor watches and
- 55:56Speaker 5: some of the new curb chain collection of David Yerman jewelry.
- 56:01Speaker 5: David's been doing this a long time. There's only one
- 56:04Speaker 5: David Gardner's. David Gardner's Jewelers, 911 University.
