- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:23Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number two
- 0:27Speaker 1: and today of the show. I'm joined by Dan nine
- 0:29Speaker 1: Fingers Johnson and Josh further Hilliard to set the stage
- 0:33Speaker 1: for the upcoming season day secting our goals, hopes and
- 0:37Speaker 1: hit lists for two thousand. All right, welcome to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Wired Hunt Podcast, brought to you by on X, and
- 0:51Speaker 1: we've got a good show for you today because already
- 0:55Speaker 1: myself and my two partners and Hime I guess you
- 1:00Speaker 1: could call him, we've already been laughing. We've already been
- 1:03Speaker 1: making inappropriate sexual jokes. We've already we've already had a
- 1:08Speaker 1: really good start to the conversation before we started recording,
- 1:11Speaker 1: so it should just go swimmingly from here. We got
- 1:15Speaker 1: Dan Johnson and further Hilliard and uh, Dan, I gotta
- 1:19Speaker 1: tell you something O. Me and Josh further Hilliard. We're
- 1:24Speaker 1: going up north to my family deer camp earlier this summer,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and it was me, him and my dad. We're in
- 1:31Speaker 1: the truck at the gas station, and we'd like, I
- 1:33Speaker 1: don't know, Josh had to take a big dump or something.
- 1:35Speaker 1: So he was in the bathroom for a long time exactly.
- 1:39Speaker 1: He finally came out and as he's walking to the
- 1:43Speaker 1: truck from the other side of the parking lot, someone
- 1:47Speaker 1: all of a sudden yells further, Oh, now he's got
- 1:53Speaker 1: some clue. Don't care about Mark, It was it was
- 1:57Speaker 1: pretty great. That's awesome, Mark, You're lucky you got to
- 2:01Speaker 1: hang out with me that Then yes, I was, dude,
- 2:06Speaker 1: can I get your picture? So, so the three of
- 2:11Speaker 1: us are here today because we need to do our
- 2:13Speaker 1: annual Goals, Hopes and hit Lists podcast in which we
- 2:17Speaker 1: kind of like to just set the stage for the
- 2:20Speaker 1: upcoming hunting season. Um, I think we've done this every
- 2:22Speaker 1: single year of the podcast, Dan right. So basically the
- 2:27Speaker 1: gist will be we'll kind of run through each one
- 2:30Speaker 1: of us and talk about, like, what's the final schedule
- 2:32Speaker 1: for the year, where we're going, what are we doing,
- 2:35Speaker 1: what are some of our kind of tangible goals, Maybe
- 2:38Speaker 1: what are some of our pine this guy hopes, Um,
- 2:40Speaker 1: if there's any specific bucks were after any specific I
- 2:44Speaker 1: don't know, projects or things that we just want to
- 2:47Speaker 1: make sure we really do well this year. I want
- 2:49Speaker 1: to kind of touch on all that. Um, I have
- 2:51Speaker 1: a few ideas and notes of what I want to
- 2:53Speaker 1: kind of cover through each of us. But you know,
- 2:57Speaker 1: let's just see where this goes. If all of a
- 2:59Speaker 1: sudden we decided want to talk about I don't know
- 3:02Speaker 1: further's bathroom schedule, we can do that if need be. Um.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Speaking of which, my goal is to completely derail this episode.
- 3:10Speaker 1: By the way, yet I know we can. We can
- 3:14Speaker 1: be done with the bathroom schedule stuff. I know where
- 3:16Speaker 1: this has gone, so we should just and he works.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He works for the q d M A mark. We
- 3:24Speaker 1: can't like Burt smirch. Smirch if that's even a word. Professional. Man,
- 3:29Speaker 1: he's a professional. Now, you're right, he's a professional. And
- 3:32Speaker 1: when a professional visits another professional for an appointment, you
- 3:36Speaker 1: shouldn't talk about it publicly, right exactly. It's like hip
- 3:40Speaker 1: hop stuff, hi stuff. So we'll keep Josh's hippo related
- 3:44Speaker 1: news just to the three of us. But Dan, be
- 3:48Speaker 1: be easy on him, be gentle to Josh today. Oh no,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I like Josh. It's you that I'm gonna thank you.
- 3:55Speaker 1: It's not it's nice to have some backup once in
- 3:57Speaker 1: a while, I know, right, So that's give him too
- 4:01Speaker 1: hard of a time. Yeah he really does, man, he
- 4:04Speaker 1: really does. The Only reason why I give him a
- 4:07Speaker 1: hard time because I know we can handle it and
- 4:10Speaker 1: because I love him, right, you think he can handle it.
- 4:13Speaker 1: In his mind, he's actually plotting to murder you if
- 4:17Speaker 1: I got murdered. If I got murdered, do you think
- 4:19Speaker 1: he'd be the number one suspect in most people's eyes,
- 4:22Speaker 1: like when they get that news, like, oh, probably Further
- 4:25Speaker 1: probably snapped. It's either it's either Further or the guy
- 4:28Speaker 1: who thinks we swear too much on this pod gap
- 4:32Speaker 1: or talk about kids too much. That's right, h So
- 4:35Speaker 1: I can I can add into that convo now. I
- 4:37Speaker 1: want to feel like I can add in on that
- 4:40Speaker 1: that topic. Did you know that Dan has has a kid? Yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 1: so I can. I can give the classic Hey, Mark,
- 4:48Speaker 1: if you hear a kid crying in the background, just
- 4:51Speaker 1: just we'll just keep going. We can edit that out.
- 4:55Speaker 1: He actually was crying when we first started, so hopefully
- 4:57Speaker 1: you can't hear him. If you I'm gonna give you
- 4:59Speaker 1: one piece advice right now, I don't have three. I
- 5:05Speaker 1: laughed really hard Dan, when you wrote that, like I
- 5:08Speaker 1: put up a little picture on Facebook or something just like, uh,
- 5:11Speaker 1: Wade is my son's day when Wade was born. Dan
- 5:15Speaker 1: comes in from left fields like don't have three? Like, no, congrats,
- 5:19Speaker 1: nothing like that. It's like, don't I laughed really hard
- 5:23Speaker 1: at that. I think I had a good chuckle. I
- 5:26Speaker 1: feel you should see our house, like it looks like
- 5:29Speaker 1: an abandoned storage shed. I mean, there's just I mean
- 5:34Speaker 1: it is just trashed, and me and my wife we
- 5:37Speaker 1: try really hard to keep it clean. Oh no, man, no, man,
- 5:41Speaker 1: It's like it's like they have an agenda. It's like, oh,
- 5:43Speaker 1: let's wake up and trash the house. I don't. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: don't know how you do it, because I already feel
- 5:49Speaker 1: like that is the case with one kid, so three terrifying.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But that kind of ties into one of the first
- 5:56Speaker 1: things I did want to ask you about, Dan, not
- 5:58Speaker 1: quite getting into our main topic. But um, when we
- 6:02Speaker 1: were on the show last time together, maybe at the
- 6:04Speaker 1: time before that, um, like over the course of the summer,
- 6:07Speaker 1: we we first talked about this idea of trying to
- 6:08Speaker 1: institute some new good habits. Next time we chatted, we said, hey,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we're gonna run. We're gonna trying to run three miles
- 6:14Speaker 1: at least three times a week, and then we're gonna
- 6:16Speaker 1: keep each other accountable on it. And since that point,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you and may have been texting each other throughout the
- 6:22Speaker 1: week with updates and how we're doing. And I just
- 6:25Speaker 1: want to come out and commend you because I feel
- 6:28Speaker 1: like you've done a damn good job of it. Like
- 6:30Speaker 1: we've been getting the little onex trackers going and sending
- 6:33Speaker 1: each other screenshot of how far we ran each day
- 6:36Speaker 1: and where we went, and uh, I've been pretty darn
- 6:39Speaker 1: on point. So pat on the back. Yeah, And that's
- 6:44Speaker 1: I tell you what. Um, It's kind of funny. There's
- 6:48Speaker 1: nights where I'm sitting in my chair it's eight o'clock
- 6:50Speaker 1: at night, or nine almost nine, the kids are finally
- 6:54Speaker 1: in bed, and I could either take that moment to
- 6:57Speaker 1: just relax in silence, but I can't let that bastard
- 7:01Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan beat me in anything, so I have I
- 7:06Speaker 1: have to get up and go for a run just
- 7:09Speaker 1: so I can send you a screenshot of what I did. Yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 1: it's perfect, it's perfect. It really does help me too,
- 7:15Speaker 1: because I know my crap. Dan sent me three three
- 7:18Speaker 1: screen sets already. One day he went like five miles
- 7:21Speaker 1: or something. If I get lazy, I can't be the
- 7:24Speaker 1: pansy of the group. So it's been getting me going
- 7:26Speaker 1: to so right along with you know, we we do
- 7:30Speaker 1: our runs and then every once in a while we'll
- 7:32Speaker 1: you know, here's the target here, I'm shooting my bow
- 7:35Speaker 1: or whatever. And now I haven't maintained to the three
- 7:39Speaker 1: miles three times a week schedule because I'm adding in
- 7:41Speaker 1: different exercises and workouts into that. But for the most part,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I'm running at least two times a week six miles
- 7:51Speaker 1: um and six miles a week and then adding in
- 7:55Speaker 1: another exercise in on that. And damn just got me
- 7:59Speaker 1: Jack for the mountains. Yeah, I think that's I think
- 8:02Speaker 1: that's awesome, just having that, just something to get your
- 8:05Speaker 1: day going in a positive direction, working towards the fall.
- 8:08Speaker 1: At least for me, I like doing that. Now. It's
- 8:11Speaker 1: there's that little moment when it's either late at night
- 8:13Speaker 1: or for me it's early in the morning, when I
- 8:15Speaker 1: could make that choice, like you, just like you said,
- 8:17Speaker 1: like I just want to relax for a moment, and
- 8:20Speaker 1: in that second, I don't want to go run or whatever.
- 8:23Speaker 1: But always after I did it, I'm always very glad
- 8:26Speaker 1: and I feel like just from there on out it's better.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So like today, I didn't want to get up, but
- 8:31Speaker 1: I knew I gotta get out, hammer my three miles
- 8:33Speaker 1: out and then shoot my bow. And it just feels
- 8:36Speaker 1: like I made progress. And that's a good feeling. So
- 8:39Speaker 1: it's in fact, kudos. I gotta get on this train
- 8:43Speaker 1: with you guys. I need some I need some accountability
- 8:45Speaker 1: partners on that kind of stuff. Do you want to do?
- 8:48Speaker 1: You want in on the group text? Oh yeah, you
- 8:50Speaker 1: got a group text going for that. I mean it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: a two it's a two persons, let's make it a
- 8:55Speaker 1: three person I need some accountability on on some fitness stuff.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I gotta get myself back in shape. This ain't a
- 9:01Speaker 1: joke further, Okay, I'm not. I'm dead serious, man. So
- 9:04Speaker 1: if you're gonna do this, you gotta do it around.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm in. I'm in. I just I think this is
- 9:13Speaker 1: quite common. But man, I put on some pounds during
- 9:15Speaker 1: the pregnancy. You should see him. You should see him Dan.
- 9:20Speaker 1: He's just a bunch of different circles, is the big
- 9:26Speaker 1: old boat man. So I've been I've been meeting a
- 9:30Speaker 1: couple of guys and and doing some like waited pack
- 9:33Speaker 1: hikes over the last couple of weeks a couple of
- 9:34Speaker 1: times a week, and that's been good. But I just
- 9:37Speaker 1: need to get some more cardio and try to cut
- 9:39Speaker 1: some of this weight by by the fall the old
- 9:42Speaker 1: sympathy weight. Luckily, I had my sympathy weight on before
- 9:46Speaker 1: my wife got pregnant, so I really didn't need to
- 9:48Speaker 1: add any anymore. Just keep that consistently hanging on. Right right,
- 9:53Speaker 1: here's been. Here's been the worst part. People are coming
- 9:55Speaker 1: to visit and like we're getting like cakes and cookies
- 9:58Speaker 1: and like all this stuff, like oh gosh, it's never
- 10:00Speaker 1: gonna end. And I just have no willpower for that
- 10:03Speaker 1: kind of stuff. So I need I need some some
- 10:06Speaker 1: accountability partners on that. So add me to the group
- 10:08Speaker 1: text that stuff about three miles three times a week
- 10:11Speaker 1: that I gotta shoot your bow. All that stuff perfect,
- 10:16Speaker 1: all right, We're not going to take it easy on you.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That we'll probably come at you hard if you if
- 10:20Speaker 1: you misbeat need that I need that with this kind
- 10:24Speaker 1: of stuff. I need to be picked on and made
- 10:26Speaker 1: fun of for this kind of stuff. So I feel
- 10:28Speaker 1: like I'll fit right in. So there's this there's this Jeff.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You guys know what Jeff is or gift I don't
- 10:33Speaker 1: know how to say it, gift or Jeff. It's like
- 10:35Speaker 1: an animated image. And if you ever bail on one
- 10:39Speaker 1: of the times we're supposed to go running, I'm just
- 10:41Speaker 1: gonna always send. There's one like if you're if you're
- 10:43Speaker 1: using an iPhone a frequent gift for some reason that
- 10:47Speaker 1: shows up in like the options. If you just start
- 10:50Speaker 1: to search, there's this picture of like a guy with
- 10:53Speaker 1: a bunch of hot dogs being thrown on his face.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm just gonna send that to you repeatedly. Needin shows
- 11:01Speaker 1: it shows up in your suggestions because you probably use
- 11:03Speaker 1: that that might be So, how is your weekend? And
- 11:08Speaker 1: then he sends that gift you. So we gotta stay
- 11:14Speaker 1: staying on track here we've gone off the road. Yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Other than other than the physical fitness type stuff, which
- 11:20Speaker 1: is important for us with a lot of the trips
- 11:22Speaker 1: were coming up. How does everybody feel with their summer
- 11:25Speaker 1: preparations so far? Because we're almost in mid August, we're
- 11:27Speaker 1: almost down to the last like two two and a
- 11:29Speaker 1: half weeks the summer um Dan, how are you feeling
- 11:33Speaker 1: about your prep other than the physical stuff coming with
- 11:36Speaker 1: your with your hunts, your el khant, your mulder hunt,
- 11:38Speaker 1: your white tail stuff. Are you where you need to
- 11:40Speaker 1: be here? Close to it? Yeah? I think I'm fairly close. Uh.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I think the next big thing for me is putting
- 11:47Speaker 1: together the official gear list and getting everything organized. Right.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I've I've done my work physically. Um, I've done a
- 11:57Speaker 1: majority of my preparation. This some or has been done
- 12:00Speaker 1: on the elk side and on the mucle there hunt side. Um.
- 12:04Speaker 1: You know, I'm going back to a farm that I've
- 12:06Speaker 1: hunted now for nine years, eight or nine years now,
- 12:10Speaker 1: so I know that farm. I know how it operates.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I don't have I have two tree stands up there.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I've checked my trail cameras once. I'll go back next
- 12:22Speaker 1: weekend to check the trail cameras and possibly put up
- 12:25Speaker 1: some more tree stands. But from the white tail side
- 12:29Speaker 1: of things, it's just been I'm going back into old territory, right,
- 12:34Speaker 1: So I don't necessarily I'm not gonna say I'm a
- 12:38Speaker 1: hundred percent prepared, but I'm not under prepared just because
- 12:41Speaker 1: of everything I already know about the farm. Okay, So
- 12:45Speaker 1: on a one to tense scale for your Western hunts.
- 12:48Speaker 1: On a one tense scale, where would you say your
- 12:51Speaker 1: level of preparedness of that honest assessment? Honest assessment. And
- 12:56Speaker 1: I know I know where I'm going. This is the
- 12:58Speaker 1: same place I went last year from Elk hunt, so
- 13:00Speaker 1: we know the area roughly. We're going a week later,
- 13:05Speaker 1: hoping to catch the beginning of the Elk rut. And
- 13:09Speaker 1: I feel, other than having to purchase a couple items
- 13:13Speaker 1: for gear, I have everything. Um, physically, I'm gonna ramp
- 13:18Speaker 1: it up, like this week was actually ramp up week,
- 13:22Speaker 1: where for the next month I'm going hard until it's
- 13:26Speaker 1: time to leave. So I would say I'm probably at
- 13:29Speaker 1: a seven right now as far as being prepared for
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Western hunts. Um, the muleteer hunt that's coming in October.
- 13:37Speaker 1: This is a public land, get out of your truck,
- 13:42Speaker 1: go hunt. Like, we have no idea other than what
- 13:45Speaker 1: information we've researched online or have been told by people
- 13:49Speaker 1: who have shared information with us. It's just one of
- 13:52Speaker 1: those things where it's going to be a shoot from
- 13:55Speaker 1: the hip hunt. So what's your number of that one
- 13:57Speaker 1: more of a five? Yeah, it's well, I don't don't
- 14:00Speaker 1: even really want to give it a number because I'll
- 14:02Speaker 1: be prepared for it, like right now, and probably out
- 14:05Speaker 1: of seven with that one too, just for the fact
- 14:07Speaker 1: that we're going into it blind. So I don't think
- 14:10Speaker 1: there's a way to be prepared for a hunt like
- 14:15Speaker 1: that for sure. And then on the white tail sign, man,
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm not like I'll say I'm at a nine right now.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I mean I usually and I think we've talked about
- 14:25Speaker 1: this in the past. Man, I put my tree stands up,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I put them in the good spots, but I never
- 14:32Speaker 1: use them. So I'm not really concerned this year that
- 14:36Speaker 1: I have. I guess I don't have as many tree
- 14:40Speaker 1: stands up as I do in the past, so it'll
- 14:44Speaker 1: just be more running and gunning. And that's something that
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'm completely comfortable with. So it's not like I I
- 14:51Speaker 1: feel bad that I don't have my you know, some
- 14:54Speaker 1: trail cameras out or I have you know some other things,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, my my tree stands out. I just know
- 14:59Speaker 1: that I'll I'll fall right back into my routine early
- 15:02Speaker 1: September after I get back from the elk hunt, or
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know, maybe before I go on my elk hunt.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'll switch my cameras off of my mineral stations to
- 15:12Speaker 1: the traditional pinch points betting areas, uh, you know, fence
- 15:16Speaker 1: crossing type areas where uh I get more rut deer movement.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And then from there it's just falling in line and
- 15:24Speaker 1: falling into that routine of of the season. Yeah, off
- 15:28Speaker 1: and running. What about you for its one through ten
- 15:32Speaker 1: scale on your summer preparations? How are you feeling coming
- 15:35Speaker 1: into the two nineteen season? Oh? Man, like a three
- 15:38Speaker 1: or four. I just like like have had almost zero
- 15:42Speaker 1: time for that stuff. Um with the new baby. He's
- 15:45Speaker 1: like six weeks old day, so it's just been it's
- 15:48Speaker 1: been crazy the last couple of weeks, just kind of
- 15:50Speaker 1: figuring out our new life and doing all that stuff.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And um, so I feel very underprepared for like my
- 15:56Speaker 1: personal um hunting. UM. I am planning a couple of
- 16:00Speaker 1: like mentored hunts and stuff like that that I'm feeling
- 16:02Speaker 1: much better about. So hopefully we'll get some other people
- 16:05Speaker 1: on some deer um. And I've been doing quite a
- 16:09Speaker 1: bit of planning for a trip that we're doing um
- 16:12Speaker 1: in October. I'm feeling pretty good about that. But in
- 16:15Speaker 1: terms of like my personal hunting here in Michigan, I
- 16:17Speaker 1: feel very uh under prepared. So it's going to be
- 16:21Speaker 1: a race to October one year over the next couple
- 16:25Speaker 1: of a couple of weeks. Why are you underprepared? I
- 16:29Speaker 1: just haven't. I just haven't given it the time that
- 16:31Speaker 1: I need to give it. I mean, like, are you
- 16:34Speaker 1: hunting enough hunted? Every year? I'm primarily hunting public land.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I've got like a small piece that I have access to,
- 16:45Speaker 1: um privately here that I that I hunted last year
- 16:47Speaker 1: for the first time. UM. I figured a few things
- 16:50Speaker 1: out on that one, but I need to get out
- 16:52Speaker 1: there and and do a little bit more on it.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I'm hoping to get out there over the next couple
- 16:57Speaker 1: of weeks and prep a couple of trees for UM.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I'm primarily running and gunning. I'm gonna switch over to
- 17:03Speaker 1: saddle this year, so I need to get out there
- 17:05Speaker 1: and prep a couple of trees for saddle. Yeah. I know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I'm trying to be like Mark. I want to be
- 17:11Speaker 1: just like Mark. So if you're trying to be cool,
- 17:14Speaker 1: that's a bad plan. Yeah, I know, I know, but
- 17:17Speaker 1: so yeah, man, I just like I need to do
- 17:19Speaker 1: a lot more scouting than than what I've done, and um,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I've I've severely lacked on that. Um. I feel like
- 17:27Speaker 1: I still have a little bit of time, so I'm
- 17:29Speaker 1: not like totally freaking out yet, UM, but I need
- 17:33Speaker 1: to get on it so that that that would be
- 17:36Speaker 1: the number one reason why I just feel underprepared. Yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I feel like and and I know you know I'm
- 17:41Speaker 1: going to say this and it's the same old so
- 17:45Speaker 1: don't mind me. But I think access is Josh's challenge.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So see, I think Josh a little bit doesn't like
- 17:55Speaker 1: knocking on doors, right, that's probably something you're not too keen.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And so most of the spots he's hunting our public
- 18:02Speaker 1: land or spots where you know, like me and him
- 18:04Speaker 1: hunt together or him and another buddy are hunting together,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and that's great, but there's something to be said about
- 18:10Speaker 1: having a spot that's like just yours or you've got
- 18:12Speaker 1: all your own, and that you can be out there
- 18:14Speaker 1: whenever you need. Um. So I'm sure you know, I
- 18:16Speaker 1: know it's hard to get that time right now, but
- 18:18Speaker 1: once you do get that time, and it's gonna happen,
- 18:21Speaker 1: for it one of these times where you're gonna knock
- 18:23Speaker 1: an a door somewhere you're gonna get that hundred acres
- 18:25Speaker 1: that maybe it's just you or one other random person,
- 18:27Speaker 1: but you know, you can get out there whenever you want,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and you can run your own cameras and you can
- 18:32Speaker 1: hang your own stands. I think that will be like
- 18:33Speaker 1: a a good thing for you, would be a game
- 18:35Speaker 1: changer for me for sure. So, um, if anybody's listening
- 18:39Speaker 1: has a hundred acres, preferably a mile from your house, yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 1: that's a big thing that There's been a couple of
- 18:47Speaker 1: pieces like you know, done by Mark. You had some
- 18:49Speaker 1: leads and its gonna be I mean it's like an
- 18:51Speaker 1: hour and a half for me to get down there,
- 18:53Speaker 1: and just you know, this year, out of any I
- 18:55Speaker 1: just think I need to be a little closer to
- 18:57Speaker 1: home because I think I'm just gonna have to pop
- 18:59Speaker 1: out one to get a chance. Right, So it's just
- 19:01Speaker 1: gonna be a quick afternoon hunt or get get there
- 19:04Speaker 1: for a morning hunt and be back for the afternoon
- 19:06Speaker 1: and help my wife out with some stuff. And so
- 19:09Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a little bit different year with
- 19:11Speaker 1: that kind of stuff where I'm not gonna be able
- 19:13Speaker 1: to I don't know how many all days since I'm
- 19:14Speaker 1: gonna be doing you know what I mean, Um, it
- 19:17Speaker 1: would be nice to have something close to home or
- 19:18Speaker 1: I can just pop out and and sit for the
- 19:21Speaker 1: morning or get out there for the afternoon hunt and
- 19:24Speaker 1: um still be able to fulfill my obligations here at home.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So so that in mind, then walk me through real
- 19:32Speaker 1: quick for you, Josh, what you think your hunt schedule
- 19:35Speaker 1: is going to look like this year? What we're you
- 19:37Speaker 1: going to be hunting? What's that going to sure? Sure?
- 19:40Speaker 1: So so October, Um, October is going to be probably
- 19:48Speaker 1: my my best time, um in terms of having a
- 19:51Speaker 1: full month to hunt. My my weekends in October will
- 19:54Speaker 1: be limited that Like, like I said, I've got two
- 19:57Speaker 1: different mentored hunts for work that I'm basically uh in
- 20:01Speaker 1: charge of. I've got one the first weekend in October
- 20:03Speaker 1: and one the second weekend of October. Um. You know,
- 20:06Speaker 1: there's some logistical things that I'm gonna have to take
- 20:08Speaker 1: care of for that and some planning. UM that will
- 20:11Speaker 1: take a time to take some time from my from
- 20:13Speaker 1: those weeks. But I'm hoping to get out a couple
- 20:15Speaker 1: of times during the week. UM. Fortunately my schedule working
- 20:19Speaker 1: from home, I have the ability to hunt a little
- 20:22Speaker 1: bit more during the week than than some people. So, um,
- 20:26Speaker 1: that stuff is going to be just be primarily public
- 20:28Speaker 1: land around my house here, um or within you know,
- 20:31Speaker 1: an hour or so to drive from my house. Um.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And then we're I don't know what, can I say
- 20:37Speaker 1: what we're doing in October? Like, yeah, is that good? Yeah? Yeah,
- 20:43Speaker 1: we're well that And then our our trip that we're
- 20:45Speaker 1: gonna take, Um, so where are you guys going, We're going?
- 20:50Speaker 1: Can I is this just good to say? Yeah, we've
- 20:53Speaker 1: talked about that. Are we okay? So we're going coming
- 20:57Speaker 1: out or something? Just cool? The same announcement. Now we're
- 21:01Speaker 1: we're heading up to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota to
- 21:04Speaker 1: do a like a canoe in hunt up there for
- 21:07Speaker 1: white tails. Um. So we're like budgeting a week for
- 21:10Speaker 1: that trip. So that's gonna that's gonna be uh one
- 21:14Speaker 1: of my hunts and the end of October really looking
- 21:16Speaker 1: forward to that one. Um, it should be a lot
- 21:19Speaker 1: of fun. But again, I've been spent a lot of
- 21:21Speaker 1: time on on logistics for that one. There's a lot
- 21:23Speaker 1: that goes into that one. So um, that's cool. And
- 21:27Speaker 1: then uh, November, I'm just gonna you know, try to
- 21:30Speaker 1: find a hot spot. That's probably gonna be the time
- 21:32Speaker 1: when I'm spending a little bit more time in a
- 21:33Speaker 1: little piece of a private I have access to UM again,
- 21:38Speaker 1: hopefully during the week when some of the other guys
- 21:39Speaker 1: that UM have permission to hunt it won't be there
- 21:42Speaker 1: as much. UM. I think it's like sixty acres seventy
- 21:46Speaker 1: or something like that, so it's not huge. I know
- 21:48Speaker 1: there's at least two other guys that hunt it, maybe
- 21:51Speaker 1: another another one. UM. Some of those guys just primarily
- 21:55Speaker 1: gun hunted. So I think if I can get out
- 21:58Speaker 1: there during the week, I'll have I'll have it to myself,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and I've had I have a pretty good line of
- 22:05Speaker 1: communication with this other guy that hunts it, so we
- 22:07Speaker 1: kind of let each other know when we're gonna be
- 22:09Speaker 1: there and try to stay away UM if one of
- 22:11Speaker 1: us is going to be out there, so it works
- 22:13Speaker 1: out well. But I'm hoping to get out there and uh,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know, spend some time out there in November and
- 22:17Speaker 1: hopefully October two if I'm hoping to get a camera
- 22:21Speaker 1: out there, so if I see something going on, i'll um,
- 22:23Speaker 1: I'll get out there. So UM, the only downside about
- 22:27Speaker 1: that place, Mark, it sounds like they didn't get the
- 22:29Speaker 1: fields planted in anything this year nothing. So yeah, so
- 22:35Speaker 1: that's uh, that's not great, especially for early season stuff. Um,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but I think there'll be some some cruisers in there
- 22:43Speaker 1: late October and in November, so um yeah, So that's
- 22:48Speaker 1: kind of that's kind of my my plan. I think
- 22:50Speaker 1: a lot of it's just going to be winging it
- 22:53Speaker 1: and getting out when I when I can so and
- 22:56Speaker 1: then you get November gun November gun season. Yeah, I'll
- 22:59Speaker 1: be a deer amp and then um, um, you know
- 23:02Speaker 1: that's always something I'm looking forward to. And man, I
- 23:05Speaker 1: feel like this year, like I'm more excited for that, um,
- 23:10Speaker 1: for that trip than I have been a long time.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I feel like things just keep getting better and keep
- 23:14Speaker 1: getting better and keep getting better, and like last year
- 23:17Speaker 1: was like really close to making it happen. Um, I've
- 23:20Speaker 1: got a lot of I've got a lot of hope
- 23:22Speaker 1: and confidence um for this year. That's probably like if
- 23:25Speaker 1: we're talking about goals like that would probably be like
- 23:27Speaker 1: my number one goal would be to kill a good
- 23:29Speaker 1: buck up there. That'd be awesome. It would be so
- 23:32Speaker 1: it would be um, and I agree, I feel like
- 23:36Speaker 1: the Northern Michigan deer camp is making steady progress. So UM, okay,
- 23:41Speaker 1: so that if that's one of your goals, what what
- 23:43Speaker 1: else would be considered a goal for you this year?
- 23:46Speaker 1: Given it's kind of tough, tough circumstances this year, with
- 23:49Speaker 1: time and everything. I mean, that look honestly like my
- 23:54Speaker 1: my buck goals. Um, you know, my kind of standards
- 23:57Speaker 1: are like a three and a half year old. UM.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I think my best chance for that is going to
- 24:01Speaker 1: be um that small piece of private that I have
- 24:04Speaker 1: access to. Um, but man, I would be I would
- 24:07Speaker 1: be stoked if I killed a good one in public.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And I've I've got a few spots that i've I've
- 24:12Speaker 1: i've found that I think it can maybe happen. Um,
- 24:16Speaker 1: we'll see. Um, but I think really just kind of
- 24:18Speaker 1: filling my freezer with with some deer or over some
- 24:21Speaker 1: does would be um good for this year. I'm getting
- 24:24Speaker 1: low on venison. UM, I have another another mouth to feed, um,
- 24:30Speaker 1: you know, as he's getting older and eating real food. UM,
- 24:32Speaker 1: so it would be nice too. It'd be nice to
- 24:34Speaker 1: put a couple of doughs in the freezer this year, UM,
- 24:37Speaker 1: to kind of get a good re stock of venison. Um.
- 24:41Speaker 1: So I mean if I could, if I could put
- 24:43Speaker 1: two does in the freezer this year, i'd be I'd
- 24:45Speaker 1: be really happy. Um. You know, obviously i'd love to
- 24:48Speaker 1: kill a buck. That's that's what I'm gonna be shooting for, um,
- 24:53Speaker 1: you know, really the whole season. But if I can
- 24:55Speaker 1: take a dough here or there, um, that'd be That'd
- 24:57Speaker 1: be awesome. And I really like to I'd really I
- 25:00Speaker 1: like to kill one of those doughs on public land
- 25:01Speaker 1: with my bow. That would be cool. So two doughs
- 25:04Speaker 1: and the three and a half year old buck, and
- 25:06Speaker 1: it'd be even better if you got that big one
- 25:08Speaker 1: up north exactly exactly. And and I think my goal
- 25:11Speaker 1: for our Minnesota trip would be to see a deer.
- 25:15Speaker 1: That's that's my hope up there. Yeah, I think that's
- 25:18Speaker 1: a reasonable goal to have. What about you, Dan, what's
- 25:21Speaker 1: your final schedule and what your goals would be then?
- 25:26Speaker 1: Given that schedule? Yeah, so let's see, we got a
- 25:30Speaker 1: second week of September is going to Elk, second week
- 25:33Speaker 1: of October we're going to South Dakota for meal deer.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And then obviously Iowa probably won't hunt much until you know,
- 25:43Speaker 1: mid October. But as far as starting there for white tails, um,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I probably want to go. I probably want to get
- 25:52Speaker 1: I got a new deep freeze, so I want to
- 25:54Speaker 1: fill that out. My goal this year is to kill
- 25:56Speaker 1: three doughs, and I want to put that meat into
- 26:02Speaker 1: my freezer. Because I threw a piece of cardboard out
- 26:04Speaker 1: my window and it knocked the plug in out of
- 26:07Speaker 1: the wall and I didn't notice it of my old
- 26:10Speaker 1: deep freeze and all my meat defrosted everything, and so
- 26:16Speaker 1: I had to throw away probably about there wasn't a
- 26:18Speaker 1: lot in there. I would say about twenty five pounds
- 26:20Speaker 1: of venison, and it really pissed me off. So I
- 26:26Speaker 1: want to fill that freezer up again and get my
- 26:29Speaker 1: family back on the deer meat train, especially just the
- 26:33Speaker 1: ground stuff that you can add to anything. Right, and
- 26:36Speaker 1: then from the buck side of things, man, this might
- 26:40Speaker 1: be a year where I eat my tag. Just I
- 26:44Speaker 1: got a couple of deer that have shown back up
- 26:46Speaker 1: and I've only checked my trail cameras one time. I
- 26:48Speaker 1: got a couple of deer that have shown back up
- 26:51Speaker 1: and they're nice and they're good, and I might eat
- 26:55Speaker 1: a tag for them. So yeah, we we got to
- 26:59Speaker 1: talk a little bit about that, um, But before we
- 27:03Speaker 1: get to that real quick, what would a success for
- 27:07Speaker 1: your elk trip look like? What's your goal for that
- 27:09Speaker 1: Colorado trip? Shooting a bowl, shooting a cow, just getting Yeah,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I'm shooting the first elk that comes within shooting line
- 27:17Speaker 1: range with my bow. Now, if we're if we're in
- 27:22Speaker 1: the mix right, we're gonna be going during the rut
- 27:25Speaker 1: or during the pre rud, I guess you would say.
- 27:28Speaker 1: And if I could get and we're in the mix
- 27:31Speaker 1: right and we're starting to hear bogle in and the
- 27:33Speaker 1: responding and it's getting crazy like you see on a
- 27:36Speaker 1: one of those premost videos, then I'll probably pass one
- 27:40Speaker 1: to hopefully get a bowl. But if it's real slow
- 27:43Speaker 1: and we're not having the encounters and a and uh
- 27:47Speaker 1: a cow gives us the opportunity, I'm gonna I'll probably
- 27:51Speaker 1: take a shot at a dough and then meal deer
- 27:54Speaker 1: in South Dakota. Like I said, that's such a that's
- 27:58Speaker 1: such a brand new thing that just to see a mule,
- 28:03Speaker 1: your buck in its natural environment through the spotting scope
- 28:06Speaker 1: and maybe take a stock even if I fail, would
- 28:10Speaker 1: be such a huge takeaway for me that I would
- 28:13Speaker 1: consider that a success just to even get a stock in. Yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 1: that would be that'd be pretty cool. Yeah, And we
- 28:21Speaker 1: need to take a quick break here to thank our
- 28:22Speaker 1: friends at on X and the on X Hunt app
- 28:25Speaker 1: is something I'm using a lot this time of year.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Here too, specific examples of what I've been doing recently.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Number one the mapping feature that allows you to mark
- 28:34Speaker 1: an area and actually measure an area like a polygon,
- 28:37Speaker 1: create whatever shape you want on the map. It will
- 28:39Speaker 1: tell you exactly what the acreages. That's a very handy
- 28:42Speaker 1: when you're trying to plan out how much fertilizer seed
- 28:44Speaker 1: to use on a food plot. Number two, I've been
- 28:47Speaker 1: setting up a bunch of new tree standing, tree settle locations.
- 28:50Speaker 1: When I'm marking those on my map as a waypoint.
- 28:52Speaker 1: On x now has custom icons. You can choose the
- 28:55Speaker 1: waypoint icon to look like a tree stand or ground blind,
- 28:59Speaker 1: a trail camra, or all sorts of other things, just
- 29:01Speaker 1: to make it that much easier when you look at
- 29:03Speaker 1: your map to know exactly what waypoints mean. What very
- 29:06Speaker 1: handy tool. Check it out at your mobile app store
- 29:09Speaker 1: of choice. We also want to thank our friends at
- 29:12Speaker 1: White Tailed Properties and Spencer will take it from here.
- 29:16Speaker 1: This week with White Tailed Properties, we are joined by
- 29:18Speaker 1: Justin Mason, a land specialist out of Illinois, and Justine
- 29:22Speaker 1: is going to be telling us about what are some
- 29:24Speaker 1: often overlooked things that buyers forget to communicate with their agents.
- 29:28Speaker 1: You know, I think oftentimes buyers overlooked the fact that
- 29:32Speaker 1: they're already working with me as an agent. So if
- 29:36Speaker 1: they're browsing online and they see a property that they like,
- 29:41Speaker 1: they may just kind of impulse and call that other agent,
- 29:45Speaker 1: and then they forget to mention that they're working with
- 29:48Speaker 1: me as their agents. So they ask all these questions
- 29:51Speaker 1: and then call me back and and tell me the news.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And I said, well, did you first tell them that
- 29:55Speaker 1: you're working with me? Um, just so that you don't
- 29:57Speaker 1: step on the other agents toe. So is probably the
- 30:00Speaker 1: most common overlook thing that myers, you know, forget to
- 30:04Speaker 1: tell me as their agent. If you'd like to learn
- 30:06Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Justin currently has
- 30:09Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit white tail Properties dot com. Backslash Mason,
- 30:14Speaker 1: that's m A s O N. Now what about your
- 30:19Speaker 1: back to Iowa? Back to these bucks? Walked me through
- 30:22Speaker 1: these handful of bucks that you think you're willing to
- 30:25Speaker 1: pin your whole season on. Yeah. So you know we've
- 30:28Speaker 1: talked about the Spencer new hearth Buck right, so he's
- 30:33Speaker 1: back this year. I don't know if you necessarily put
- 30:35Speaker 1: on a ton of inches, but I think he's going
- 30:38Speaker 1: to be a six year old this year. Uh, maybe
- 30:41Speaker 1: a five year old. I don't know. But he's got
- 30:44Speaker 1: the body, he's got the rack. Right, he's a shooter,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and I have an idea where he's cruising through, so
- 30:52Speaker 1: he's he's a hit lister. I mean, I just, I
- 30:55Speaker 1: just I'm coming off of a year where I just
- 30:57Speaker 1: shot my biggest buck. So it's not like I need
- 31:01Speaker 1: to shoot. I don't know, I don't want to. I
- 31:04Speaker 1: don't want to say I don't want to put any
- 31:05Speaker 1: restrictions on the first four year old that comes through
- 31:09Speaker 1: is going to get an arrow. That's not gonna happen
- 31:11Speaker 1: this year. I'm gonna be more specific in what I'm
- 31:13Speaker 1: targeting and and try to go with a set hit list. Now,
- 31:20Speaker 1: barring that, nothing gigantic walks through. You know, you know
- 31:26Speaker 1: that I don't have any history with or I don't
- 31:28Speaker 1: have a nutrail cameer pictures with a big six year
- 31:31Speaker 1: old one ninety walks by that you've never seen before,
- 31:33Speaker 1: You're not going to turn your nose up on it. Exactly, yeah,
- 31:36Speaker 1: exactly exactly. He'll get an arrow sent his way. And
- 31:41Speaker 1: you know, I got a couple other deer that are
- 31:42Speaker 1: returning customers from last year that are gonna be really good.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Hopefully they stick around, and I can. You know, there's
- 31:51Speaker 1: a lot of things that are in play this year
- 31:54Speaker 1: that weren't in play the year before, and that is
- 31:58Speaker 1: this heavy rain in the spring cost some fields to
- 32:00Speaker 1: be planted, just like you you were talking about further
- 32:04Speaker 1: and some new fields that were in CRP previous years
- 32:10Speaker 1: to be taken out of CRP and now they're an egg.
- 32:13Speaker 1: So I'm not sure what's going to happen with the
- 32:17Speaker 1: deer movement with these new fields in play. So it's
- 32:20Speaker 1: gonna be it's gonna be a little bit of a
- 32:22Speaker 1: learning curve, right just and I think I'll be able
- 32:24Speaker 1: to learn it by putting some trail cameras up in
- 32:26Speaker 1: these areas and checking them every once in a while.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But I don't know. I feel like I'm on point
- 32:32Speaker 1: with this farm now. And like I said, it took
- 32:34Speaker 1: me seven years to figure some of this stuff out
- 32:38Speaker 1: to where I think I got a shot at a
- 32:40Speaker 1: really good deer this year, and if he if he
- 32:43Speaker 1: does what he's done the last two years, um, then
- 32:47Speaker 1: I probably won't even start hunting until m Man like
- 32:52Speaker 1: November five or sixth or something like that. He doesn't
- 32:55Speaker 1: the last two years, he hasn't shown up until like
- 32:58Speaker 1: the eleven or twelve, and he's stuck around to and
- 33:02Speaker 1: then he disappears, and then he comes back pretty much
- 33:06Speaker 1: for late season and then he's gone again. So we're
- 33:09Speaker 1: talking about Narlie Charlie, right, that's right. So yet Narlie Charlie,
- 33:14Speaker 1: it sounds like he's a November type of strike. Uh October,
- 33:19Speaker 1: and you only get one You only have one tag
- 33:21Speaker 1: in Iowa, only one archer tag. Right, Well, I can
- 33:23Speaker 1: get an archery tag and then I can buy a
- 33:26Speaker 1: late season tag if I fill my right, I can.
- 33:29Speaker 1: I can use them. I can use a bow for
- 33:31Speaker 1: a muzzleloader tag. Okay, So well, I guess what I'm
- 33:34Speaker 1: trying to understand though, is if you know you want
- 33:36Speaker 1: to go for Narlie Charlie in late or mid November,
- 33:39Speaker 1: something you probably wouldn't want target spencer or dork or
- 33:44Speaker 1: something like that in early October because you don't want
- 33:47Speaker 1: to shoot that with your bow and then not be
- 33:49Speaker 1: able to hunt Narlie Charlie on the eighth, ninth, tenth,
- 33:51Speaker 1: or ever with your bow. Is that right? Right? Right?
- 33:54Speaker 1: So that's why A, I'm probably gonna stay out of there. Um,
- 33:57Speaker 1: I'll probably do some of those those observation hunts where
- 34:02Speaker 1: I am hunting really easy access, hopefully with some kind
- 34:07Speaker 1: of visibility into the timber um And you've been on
- 34:10Speaker 1: that farm before and there's that huge valley where you
- 34:13Speaker 1: can see a long ways if you get into it.
- 34:17Speaker 1: So my goal is to, you know, maybe just camp
- 34:21Speaker 1: out on one of these easy access points and just
- 34:24Speaker 1: watch and then if I see something or my trail
- 34:27Speaker 1: cameras tell me something, then I'm going to jump in
- 34:29Speaker 1: and go for the kill. Have you considered changing up
- 34:32Speaker 1: your normal trail camera locations two more zero in specifically
- 34:37Speaker 1: for Gnarly so instead of spreading them out where you
- 34:39Speaker 1: usually do, have you thought about focusing all of your
- 34:42Speaker 1: stuff in the zones you think he's most likely to
- 34:44Speaker 1: be Yep, And that's typically what I do every year,
- 34:47Speaker 1: is when I get a really good buck on camera
- 34:52Speaker 1: I take some down somewhere else and bring them in
- 34:55Speaker 1: to hope, hopefully zero in. But I won't do that
- 34:58Speaker 1: until the actual hunting season, gotcha? Okay? Uh So Narlie,
- 35:04Speaker 1: Charlie's number one, Spencer's number two probably is dork up
- 35:09Speaker 1: there still. Yeah, Man, he's a nine year old this
- 35:13Speaker 1: year and he's probably like in the one high one thirties.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So what happens if it's like November eight or ninth
- 35:21Speaker 1: or ten. You haven't seen Narlie yet, but this nine
- 35:24Speaker 1: year old dork Buck comes by that you've seen for
- 35:28Speaker 1: six years now, where we've been talking about him since
- 35:30Speaker 1: the podcast started. I think, I mean, that's crazy. Well,
- 35:34Speaker 1: are you going to have a hard time passing on him? See?
- 35:37Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I have these debates. Let me
- 35:39Speaker 1: ask let me flip it and ask you that same question. Dude,
- 35:44Speaker 1: I don't know. That's really hard because you just came
- 35:46Speaker 1: off of the exact same year that I had. You
- 35:48Speaker 1: just shot your biggest buck ever, and I definitely come
- 35:52Speaker 1: into this year feel just more picky. I don't I
- 35:56Speaker 1: don't have I have no pressure. You know, there's some
- 35:59Speaker 1: years if you don't kill buck for a year or
- 36:00Speaker 1: two you're like, you know what, I just need to
- 36:01Speaker 1: get back into I gotta get some momentum again. I
- 36:03Speaker 1: gotta you know, I remember a few years ago, we're like,
- 36:06Speaker 1: I used to shoot it, shoot up, shoot a four
- 36:08Speaker 1: year old, shoot a buck. Have that feeling again. You'll
- 36:10Speaker 1: get after it. But then when you have that success, now,
- 36:12Speaker 1: it's like, I just want to hunt more. I want
- 36:14Speaker 1: to challenge myself more. I want to wait and see
- 36:16Speaker 1: what might be out there. And yeah, if I if
- 36:18Speaker 1: I don't feel a tag whatever, um, I kind of
- 36:21Speaker 1: feel if I if I was in your scenario. And
- 36:27Speaker 1: and again we've said this many times. Scorer isn't everything,
- 36:30Speaker 1: of course, but sometimes there's nothing wrong with being excited
- 36:33Speaker 1: about a deer that's really rare and exciting. And if
- 36:36Speaker 1: you want to challenge yourself in that way, I have
- 36:38Speaker 1: no problem with that. And I myself sometimes i'm like that.
- 36:40Speaker 1: You know, like, there's this buck Frank last year that
- 36:43Speaker 1: he was he was obviously mature, but he was also
- 36:45Speaker 1: the biggest antler deer I've ever seen before while hunting
- 36:47Speaker 1: in Michigan, and that was really exciting and I wanted
- 36:50Speaker 1: to try to kill him. Um, So I would probably
- 36:54Speaker 1: in your scenario if I knew that Narlie was still alive,
- 36:57Speaker 1: Like if I got at least one picture knowing that
- 36:59Speaker 1: he was around owned and I thought I was in
- 37:02Speaker 1: the game, I would probably not shoot anything else unless
- 37:06Speaker 1: like a no brainer, knock your socks off something similar
- 37:10Speaker 1: to Narley came, but at least for a while, I'd
- 37:12Speaker 1: want at least give it a chance. You know, I'd
- 37:13Speaker 1: hate to go out there the first day of my racation.
- 37:15Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, I don't know. It'd be like
- 37:18Speaker 1: if holy Field showed up again this year for me
- 37:20Speaker 1: and he was like seven years old and a hundred
- 37:23Speaker 1: fifteen inches, but I'm also hunting a hundred and sixty
- 37:26Speaker 1: inch mega giant again. Um, it would be a huge dilemma.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I don't know what I would do. Um. In that case,
- 37:32Speaker 1: I might shoot holy Field just because it's been a
- 37:35Speaker 1: crazy thing for me. Um. But in your scenario, I
- 37:39Speaker 1: I could understand either way, whichever way you end up going,
- 37:42Speaker 1: I would get it. But I think I would probably
- 37:45Speaker 1: lean just a little bit towards at least give myself
- 37:48Speaker 1: a chance to maybe see Gnarly. Um. I just see
- 37:51Speaker 1: him on the foot would be amazing. I mean, in
- 37:53Speaker 1: the in the same goes for a nine and nine
- 37:55Speaker 1: and a half year old buck who has pretty much
- 37:58Speaker 1: been not turnal on my farm the entire time that
- 38:01Speaker 1: I've known him, Right, So I have a feeling he
- 38:06Speaker 1: goes somewhere else during the hunting season because I don't
- 38:08Speaker 1: get any pictures of him. I think early October I'll
- 38:12Speaker 1: get some pictures of him, But I don't know. There
- 38:16Speaker 1: there is a there is a something cool about the
- 38:19Speaker 1: rarity of antlers, But at the same time, there's there's
- 38:23Speaker 1: also a rarity to a really old buck that makes
- 38:27Speaker 1: it through the winters and making his body's huge, and
- 38:29Speaker 1: he's just he's like the king ship of the world.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And you know what I mean, I don't know. I'd
- 38:38Speaker 1: say that's more rare than a than antlers. You know,
- 38:41Speaker 1: nine and a half year old buck. I mean you
- 38:42Speaker 1: don't you don't see that, Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 38:49Speaker 1: like a ghost. I mean, if you haven't been seeing it,
- 38:51Speaker 1: like if you're just totally nocturnal. Man, think about that story.
- 38:54Speaker 1: If you're able to wrap your tag around nine and
- 38:56Speaker 1: a half year old buck that finally slipped up and
- 38:59Speaker 1: you were able to capitalize on it, that'd be that'd
- 39:01Speaker 1: be awesome. So let me ask you guys this. Then,
- 39:04Speaker 1: you know, like this is a podcast we're telling we
- 39:07Speaker 1: tell stories. You know, we're storytellers. So what what's a
- 39:11Speaker 1: better story? Hey man? I have two years of history, um,
- 39:16Speaker 1: with this one buck, and he's got big anglers, and
- 39:19Speaker 1: I end up, you know, putting the piece of the
- 39:21Speaker 1: puzzle together and I kill him. Or I got six
- 39:26Speaker 1: years of experience with this dear. He's nine and a
- 39:30Speaker 1: half years old, completely nocturnal. I figure him out and
- 39:34Speaker 1: I shot him and killed him. Well, Josh out to me,
- 39:43Speaker 1: that's that. To me, it's an easy answer. Um, I
- 39:47Speaker 1: would say that nine and a half year old buck
- 39:49Speaker 1: that you've got so much history with, regardless of what
- 39:53Speaker 1: he scores, I just don't think you're gonna have another
- 39:56Speaker 1: opportunity out of nine and a half ye old buck
- 39:59Speaker 1: if to do it, maybe a long long time. UM.
- 40:03Speaker 1: To me that that would be my answer. So my
- 40:07Speaker 1: my answer would be this, It would be I would
- 40:10Speaker 1: I would agree with Josh, except for all of your
- 40:14Speaker 1: dork stuff has only ever been summer pictures like they're there.
- 40:18Speaker 1: There's never been actual hunting encounters or hunting season strategy
- 40:22Speaker 1: around him. Like he always disappears. So it's always been
- 40:25Speaker 1: like I got a picture of him the summer, and
- 40:27Speaker 1: then we don't hear about until the next year. I
- 40:29Speaker 1: got a picture dorc again, and then he disappears. If
- 40:32Speaker 1: if if it became like a hunting thing, if you've
- 40:34Speaker 1: been hunting him and seeing him for nine seasons, and
- 40:36Speaker 1: then I'd be like, no brainer, go after Dork. Given that,
- 40:40Speaker 1: I would say, you know, six years of summer pictures
- 40:43Speaker 1: kind of equals in my mind two years of hunting
- 40:48Speaker 1: actual in season, back and forth, back and forth with
- 40:51Speaker 1: a mega giant. Probably. And I will also say, if
- 40:56Speaker 1: we're looking at story value to us internally, probably all
- 41:00Speaker 1: those years. If we're looking at story value to the
- 41:02Speaker 1: outside public, we're kidding ourselves. If like, whether we like
- 41:07Speaker 1: it or not, just the reality of the world is
- 41:09Speaker 1: that huge deer just get people excited. I mean that's
- 41:12Speaker 1: just the truth of it. And uh, and you know
- 41:16Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with getting excited about a big deer,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and this big deer year after like people will get
- 41:22Speaker 1: excited about it. Um, no doubt about that. So I
- 41:24Speaker 1: think you've got two great stories, whicheveryone ends up panning out.
- 41:28Speaker 1: You're in good shape, So consider yourself lucky for that,
- 41:31Speaker 1: right well, you know, and there's still the you know
- 41:35Speaker 1: that part of the that part of the state right
- 41:39Speaker 1: now is in a drought advisory, So who knows what happens.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I mean, I've had deer disappear in the past, you know,
- 41:46Speaker 1: never found them. E h d is a thing thing
- 41:50Speaker 1: again this year. So it's just I always have these
- 41:56Speaker 1: these awesome conversations with everybody, Hey, what are you doing?
- 41:59Speaker 1: You know, maybe flat show camp picks, whatever. But the
- 42:03Speaker 1: truth of the matter is, I'm not making any decisions
- 42:06Speaker 1: up until the day I get into that tree stand
- 42:09Speaker 1: and a deer walks by. That's when I make my decision.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Right if, in the words of Dan Johnson in the
- 42:17Speaker 1: year two thousand and eight, if it makes me go, uh,
- 42:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna shoot, that's a fact, Man's I'll always remember
- 42:26Speaker 1: that clip. Yeah, and that crazy how far back that goes.
- 42:33Speaker 1: We're getting old, dude. Um. So I'll walk through my
- 42:37Speaker 1: schedule for you guys. It keeps on getting changed since
- 42:40Speaker 1: the last time we talked to all the stand Um.
- 42:43Speaker 1: So I'm doing this North Dakota hunt at the beginning
- 42:45Speaker 1: of the season. It's August thirty through September seven, so
- 42:50Speaker 1: that's a public land hunt. Um. Spencer new Heart is
- 42:53Speaker 1: going to join me now for that one, so that
- 42:56Speaker 1: should be cool. My goals for that hunt are to
- 43:00Speaker 1: kill mature buck. I'll be pumped if we can finally
- 43:02Speaker 1: find a mature deer during hunting season and getting there on.
- 43:05Speaker 1: I feel like we kinda just didn't have enough time
- 43:08Speaker 1: or didn't quite get to figure it out last year
- 43:11Speaker 1: when me and Josh were out there. So I want
- 43:13Speaker 1: to take another stab. Um. So that's my goal there.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I just want to figure it out. Like it's just
- 43:19Speaker 1: being like a little bit of a thorn in my side,
- 43:22Speaker 1: so I need that whatever that feeling is the fulfillment
- 43:26Speaker 1: of answering the question, right, and that's what I need
- 43:28Speaker 1: to figure out there. Um. And then I'll come back
- 43:33Speaker 1: for a couple of weeks, take care of stuff around
- 43:35Speaker 1: the house, be a dad again, and then October one
- 43:40Speaker 1: and that whole time will begin a bunch of Michigan
- 43:42Speaker 1: hunting for me, hunting a couple of spots in Michigan. Um,
- 43:46Speaker 1: and then that mid October hunt that Josh talked, well,
- 43:50Speaker 1: I am going to go in one of those field
- 43:52Speaker 1: of fork mentor hunts with Josh and mentors new hunters.
- 43:55Speaker 1: And then yeah, the third week in October, we're shooting
- 43:58Speaker 1: for the Minnesota hunt. UM. I agree with Josh. My
- 44:02Speaker 1: goal there is to just see some deer and survive. Um.
- 44:06Speaker 1: If we survived the trip find some deer, I will
- 44:09Speaker 1: be like, wow, we did great. UM. As far as
- 44:12Speaker 1: what I would shoot, I will shoot probably anything that's legal. UM.
- 44:17Speaker 1: That's my my goal. From a what I will target
- 44:20Speaker 1: on that hunt, I'd be to take any deer out
- 44:22Speaker 1: of there. I feel like canoe in you know, ten fifteen,
- 44:25Speaker 1: twenty miles or whatever ends up being in that kind
- 44:28Speaker 1: of wilderness. I feel like getting in and out of
- 44:30Speaker 1: there with a deer would be one heck of an accomplishment. UM.
- 44:34Speaker 1: So that's my Minnesota thoughts. UM. And then get back
- 44:40Speaker 1: again focusing on Michigan through the rut this year UM.
- 44:45Speaker 1: And then Ken Rovan toward Deer Camp. Same thing as
- 44:49Speaker 1: Josh looking forward to that. Would love to take a
- 44:51Speaker 1: nice buck up there. I will say that my goals
- 44:54Speaker 1: as far as Michigan deer this year are a little
- 44:57Speaker 1: bit location dependent. In that up there at the deer camp,
- 45:00Speaker 1: I would happily shoot a three year old. Like, if
- 45:03Speaker 1: there's like a decent little three year old buck, I
- 45:05Speaker 1: would shoot that thing in a heartbeat up there. That'd
- 45:07Speaker 1: be amazing. Um. While down in southern Michigan and these
- 45:11Speaker 1: other spots, I'm becoming much more picky, um, just because
- 45:15Speaker 1: I know there's some potential I've been putting in a
- 45:17Speaker 1: lot of time and work. I'm I'm just trying to
- 45:21Speaker 1: ramp it up to the next level now, especially. I mean,
- 45:24Speaker 1: I can't set my standards by Frank because that's unrealistic
- 45:28Speaker 1: for most years around here. But I'd be lying if
- 45:32Speaker 1: I don't see him in the back of my mind
- 45:35Speaker 1: a lot when I'm like, you know, like the just
- 45:38Speaker 1: some dear jokes don't have the same jaw dropping effect
- 45:41Speaker 1: they used to have. After I've now had a bunch
- 45:44Speaker 1: of encounters with a deer like Frank here. Um. So
- 45:47Speaker 1: I'm sure I'll be brought back down to reality this season.
- 45:50Speaker 1: It's guaranteed to happen. But there's something about that area, though, Mark,
- 45:55Speaker 1: that is holding good dear right. It's not a coincidence
- 45:59Speaker 1: that holy Field got old, that Dear got old, and
- 46:04Speaker 1: so it's not to say that another deer won't get
- 46:06Speaker 1: old in that in that neighborhood. I feel like that's
- 46:10Speaker 1: an under like your underestimating yourself. That's a good point.
- 46:14Speaker 1: It definitely has it had this little spot I've been
- 46:18Speaker 1: hunting for it's like eight years a now or something.
- 46:21Speaker 1: It's come a long way. It has been cool to
- 46:23Speaker 1: see the progress. You know, those first few years I
- 46:25Speaker 1: was hunting here, I was lucky to have one three
- 46:28Speaker 1: year old to hunt. And then fast forward two years,
- 46:31Speaker 1: like five six. Then you know, I saw there was
- 46:34Speaker 1: one buck that maybe was four one year, and then
- 46:38Speaker 1: the Holy Field years, you had this one buck that
- 46:40Speaker 1: kept coming back for three years in a row, made
- 46:43Speaker 1: it to five or six. That was that was cool
- 46:45Speaker 1: and that you're right, there's there's a couple of properties.
- 46:48Speaker 1: I think the act as sanctuaries. And then I do think, um,
- 46:52Speaker 1: and I want to pat myself on the back too
- 46:53Speaker 1: much here, but I I think it's probably fair to
- 46:55Speaker 1: say that the fact that I've been handling the property,
- 46:59Speaker 1: I can hunt with like kids gloves like white you know,
- 47:02Speaker 1: like white gloves, I think is the term like I'm
- 47:04Speaker 1: so careful, trying to be so clean when I hunt it.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I think that's probably helped and I've been trying to
- 47:09Speaker 1: improve habitat on it as much as I can. I
- 47:11Speaker 1: have a lot of good food out there most years now.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I think that's helped have more deer hang out of
- 47:15Speaker 1: my property. That then I'm the one that gets to
- 47:18Speaker 1: make the trigger decision on so instead of all these
- 47:22Speaker 1: bucks being all over the place and getting shot by everyone,
- 47:25Speaker 1: a disproportionate number hang out in my food sources where
- 47:28Speaker 1: I'm passing of them. So I do think that probably
- 47:32Speaker 1: has helped. Um. So you're right. I think there's a
- 47:36Speaker 1: good chance that could be a four year old again,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and I hope that Buck is going to be tran.
- 47:41Speaker 1: He was the three year old last year that I
- 47:42Speaker 1: saw a lot I did. Um. I've been starting to
- 47:45Speaker 1: put together a little spreadsheet on him and I have
- 47:49Speaker 1: I think the numbers fifteen different days during the hunting
- 47:52Speaker 1: season last year. I have either a daylight photos of
- 47:55Speaker 1: him or daylight actual visual encounters of him. So of
- 47:59Speaker 1: the three months season, so ninety days he was moving
- 48:02Speaker 1: fifteen days in daylight that I can confirm. That's pretty
- 48:05Speaker 1: good for Michigan buck. Um. So I think he's pretty
- 48:08Speaker 1: killable if he if he comes back. I have not
- 48:10Speaker 1: gotten a confirmed trial camera picture of him yet. Um
- 48:14Speaker 1: but my summer troal camera pictures around here are usually
- 48:16Speaker 1: pretty lousy anyway, so I'm not putting too much too
- 48:19Speaker 1: much into that. Um but yeah, definitely a four year
- 48:23Speaker 1: old or older. I did. I have been getting some
- 48:27Speaker 1: some scouting intel. There's a pretty darn nice ten pointer
- 48:32Speaker 1: I've been seeing here recently, saw three days in a
- 48:34Speaker 1: row last week, some across the road from the main property.
- 48:38Speaker 1: I can hunt a couple of days actually on the property.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I can hunt, and he he's either a really nice
- 48:45Speaker 1: three year old or like it's a good solid four
- 48:47Speaker 1: year old. I don't know yet, so hard to tell him,
- 48:49Speaker 1: like when they're standing chest high and soybeans and stuff. Um,
- 48:53Speaker 1: but if he's a four year old hill bear, no brainer. Um,
- 48:56Speaker 1: he's probably gonna be mid on a mid one thirties.
- 49:00Speaker 1: If I'm trying to be conservative with it, you could,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you know, he twisted my arm and I'm really excited.
- 49:05Speaker 1: I would say he's high one thirties. But in reality,
- 49:08Speaker 1: once the albot comes off, he's probably a little smaller.
- 49:09Speaker 1: But he's like a really nice Michigan buck any other year.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I mean, if I look back over all the years
- 49:14Speaker 1: I've hunted this property, Frank was obviously the biggest. This
- 49:19Speaker 1: buck would probably the second largest deer that I've had. Well,
- 49:23Speaker 1: there's there was one other mega giant that showed up
- 49:25Speaker 1: a couple of times in the summer, really early, but consistently.
- 49:28Speaker 1: If this buck sticks around, he'll be the second biggest
- 49:30Speaker 1: deer probably is that that's been here. If he becomes
- 49:32Speaker 1: a huntable buck, So so that's pretty cool. How far
- 49:36Speaker 1: is he how can you can you answer that? Or
- 49:38Speaker 1: from here? From that property? How far is you can
- 49:41Speaker 1: that property to make him unable? Oh? Well, twice I've
- 49:45Speaker 1: seen him on the property I can hunt, and then
- 49:48Speaker 1: once I saw him just across the road from it.
- 49:50Speaker 1: So very huntable. Um, if he you know, if his
- 49:53Speaker 1: summer range is the same as fault, if he stays around,
- 49:56Speaker 1: he seems like and I've got a bunch of pictures
- 49:59Speaker 1: of him too, So he's been very much on the
- 50:01Speaker 1: proper day hunt so far this summer. So figures crossed.
- 50:04Speaker 1: That could be a good situation. Um, But yeah, that
- 50:08Speaker 1: you don't have any You don't have any pictures of him.
- 50:09Speaker 1: You haven't pulled cards since you've seen him yet, have you?
- 50:12Speaker 1: I do have pictures of him. Yep, yep. I went
- 50:16Speaker 1: and looked back that original nice buck that I posted
- 50:19Speaker 1: pictures of right when I got back from Montana. That
- 50:22Speaker 1: was him. He just had him. He just hadn't grown
- 50:24Speaker 1: much time length it when I had that picture. Um.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And then I have multiple pictures of him like profile
- 50:28Speaker 1: view walking. I don't have any really good like head
- 50:30Speaker 1: on pictures of him, um, but multiple profile shots as
- 50:34Speaker 1: he walks to the side, you know. So it'll be
- 50:39Speaker 1: interesting to see what those dear do UM on that
- 50:43Speaker 1: main piece you can hunt now that it's like planet
- 50:45Speaker 1: and two different things. I think you said, that's the
- 50:48Speaker 1: first time that's happened since you've been there. Yeah, since
- 50:50Speaker 1: you've been hunting. It will be interesting to see how
- 50:52Speaker 1: that has a has an effect on which dear stay,
- 50:55Speaker 1: which dear leaves. Um. Maybe you'll hold more dear. It'll
- 50:58Speaker 1: be interesting to see. Okay, we need to take another
- 51:02Speaker 1: quick break here to thank our friends at Morton Buildings,
- 51:06Speaker 1: who are the builders of wood frame steel side of buildings.
- 51:10Speaker 1: If you need more space for your dear mounts, like
- 51:12Speaker 1: my wife is saying to me, or if you need
- 51:14Speaker 1: someone to store your tractor or want a building on
- 51:17Speaker 1: a new deer hunting property to put some bunks in,
- 51:20Speaker 1: or an a TV or a skinny check Morton Buildings
- 51:23Speaker 1: should be when the first options to check out. I'm
- 51:27Speaker 1: super intrigued. I keep on waiting to put one of
- 51:29Speaker 1: these up somewhere someday that as the hope. And I've
- 51:33Speaker 1: been learning more about they have to offer by visiting
- 51:35Speaker 1: Morton Buildings dot com, and I suggest you do the same.
- 51:40Speaker 1: And while we're at it, I also want to thank
- 51:42Speaker 1: Vortex Optics. And it's that time of year that I'm
- 51:46Speaker 1: out there watching bucks in the crop fields, and I
- 51:48Speaker 1: would say that a good spotting scope can make all
- 51:51Speaker 1: the difference and how enjoyable that kind of evening activity is.
- 51:56Speaker 1: I personally have been rocking the Vortex Viper HD scope
- 51:59Speaker 1: most often, and I'm using a phone scope attachment so
- 52:02Speaker 1: i can attach my phone to that scope and then
- 52:04Speaker 1: I can photograph and video deer with my iPhone. Really
- 52:08Speaker 1: easily turns out great. I love it. You also get
- 52:11Speaker 1: to see the screen, you know, instead of looking through
- 52:14Speaker 1: the I piece, which is great. But you can now
- 52:16Speaker 1: also attach your phone, which is super handy. And the
- 52:18Speaker 1: Vortex Viper HD gets me a nice crisp, clear image
- 52:21Speaker 1: and really reaches out there and touches these deer. So
- 52:24Speaker 1: if you're hoping to do something similar over these final
- 52:27Speaker 1: weeks leading up to the season, I'd encourage you to
- 52:29Speaker 1: check out what Vortex has to offer as far as
- 52:32Speaker 1: their spotting scopes, and you can find that at Vortex
- 52:35Speaker 1: Optics dot com. Yeah. I don't think I told you that, Dan,
- 52:39Speaker 1: But the main farm now is is usually it's always
- 52:42Speaker 1: just one type of crops either corner beans and it's
- 52:45Speaker 1: rotade every year. But this year, because of how wet
- 52:47Speaker 1: it was early, they planted corn on one side of
- 52:50Speaker 1: the farm, but they didn't plant the north side of
- 52:52Speaker 1: the farm until late in the summer or late in
- 52:54Speaker 1: the spring, and that's beans. So for the first time
- 52:56Speaker 1: I've got both major crops on the farm. Well that's
- 53:00Speaker 1: gonna help, I think. Yeah, I'm kind of excited to
- 53:02Speaker 1: see what that does for things. So so, yeah, I
- 53:05Speaker 1: mean this new buck, we've been kind of calling him
- 53:07Speaker 1: risky business, is what my buddy, well, you know, you know, Corey.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Corey dubbed him risky business because if he's a three
- 53:13Speaker 1: year old, he's like, it's very risky for him to
- 53:16Speaker 1: come close to me because of how impressive he looks. Um,
- 53:19Speaker 1: but I'm still on the fence. If he's a three
- 53:21Speaker 1: year old, would I take that buck? I don't know,
- 53:23Speaker 1: because he'd be, like I said, the second biggest y
- 53:25Speaker 1: I've ever been on a hunt here. But he's not.
- 53:27Speaker 1: If he's not a four year old, that makes him
- 53:29Speaker 1: it's a tough decision for me. I don't know. I
- 53:30Speaker 1: just kind of to feel that one out. Um, So
- 53:34Speaker 1: r B is definitely one on paying attention to. And
- 53:37Speaker 1: then I think Trans gonna show back up. But if
- 53:40Speaker 1: Trans shows back up, he'll be a stud I think.
- 53:43Speaker 1: So I'm I'm excited to see that. Um, what you
- 53:46Speaker 1: should do is and I'm I'm doing this in quotations,
- 53:50Speaker 1: and one's a regular quotations and one looks like a
- 53:53Speaker 1: comma but finger quotes that. Oh yeah, I see, I
- 54:00Speaker 1: get it now, Okay, I should apostrophe yeah anyway, but anyway, yeah, idiot,
- 54:08Speaker 1: but you should accidentally take a lawnmower and run over
- 54:12Speaker 1: some of those beans, knock them down, or or do
- 54:17Speaker 1: it legally and not accidentally run over him. But asked
- 54:21Speaker 1: the farmer to see if he can keep some of
- 54:23Speaker 1: them up. That would be nice. Pay him, pay him
- 54:26Speaker 1: like you know, paying for However, many bushels come out
- 54:30Speaker 1: of an acre and they say, hey, maybe we leave
- 54:31Speaker 1: an acre beans up, or you know, a half acre
- 54:34Speaker 1: or something like that. It would be awesome to have
- 54:37Speaker 1: an acre standing beans. I mean that that pull them in,
- 54:40Speaker 1: no doubt about that. I'm always amazed though here how
- 54:43Speaker 1: much they they they hammer the bean fields even after
- 54:47Speaker 1: they're they're harvested for a long time. There must be
- 54:51Speaker 1: a lot of waste screen. This farmer's combine must miss
- 54:54Speaker 1: a lot because they stay on those picked fields for
- 54:56Speaker 1: much longer than I've seen in many other places. So
- 55:00Speaker 1: it's always it seems to be. I get a lot
- 55:03Speaker 1: of good food source actions still well into late season,
- 55:06Speaker 1: so we'll see. It's gonna be interesting hunting, like you know,
- 55:10Speaker 1: kind of similar to you on your main farm. I've
- 55:12Speaker 1: been hunting this main farm now for eight years or
- 55:14Speaker 1: something like that, so I have a lot of experience
- 55:16Speaker 1: with it. I didn't have to do a lot of
- 55:17Speaker 1: new work on it. I just check the straps on
- 55:20Speaker 1: my existing stands. I prepped one new location. UM, I
- 55:24Speaker 1: gotta finalize my food plots. I'm still dealing with that. UM.
- 55:28Speaker 1: But I know kind of what's happening. I'll hunt my
- 55:31Speaker 1: main spots until I see different behavior, and if I
- 55:33Speaker 1: see different behavior, I'll just run and gun hang a
- 55:35Speaker 1: saddle somewhere new. Um, But I don't need to reinvent
- 55:38Speaker 1: the whealel. I don't think I've got a pretty good
- 55:40Speaker 1: handle on what's happening. So I do have a new
- 55:43Speaker 1: farm I'm hunting this year on that Joshua hunt. A
- 55:45Speaker 1: couple of times. We've probably been doing some work out
- 55:47Speaker 1: there recently, and and that will be a brand new
- 55:50Speaker 1: one and that will be some new a lot of
- 55:52Speaker 1: a lot of learning to do there, So I don't
- 55:54Speaker 1: know what to expect if if you know, I still
- 55:57Speaker 1: haven't gotten any trout camera pictures of the mature buck
- 55:59Speaker 1: out there, so I don't know what's there, but I
- 56:02Speaker 1: gotta believe there would be something eventually. So that's like
- 56:05Speaker 1: a big TB D. I don't have a whole lot
- 56:07Speaker 1: of exciting stuff to share, but but hopefully by the
- 56:10Speaker 1: time season comes around, that will be like my second
- 56:12Speaker 1: really good kind of local spot and we'll have something
- 56:16Speaker 1: to talk about there at that point. But question marks otherwise,
- 56:22Speaker 1: and I guess the one other the one other hunt.
- 56:23Speaker 1: I told you last time we talked about our schedule
- 56:25Speaker 1: that I was going to try to do this New
- 56:27Speaker 1: York hunt and do like a big woods tracking a
- 56:30Speaker 1: deer in the snow. That one fell through, but it's
- 56:33Speaker 1: been replaced with a late season muzzleloader hunt in Nebraska
- 56:39Speaker 1: with a bunch of the Mediator crew. So I'm gonna
- 56:43Speaker 1: tryt some public land, um late in the year out
- 56:46Speaker 1: there and see what that's like. So that would be
- 56:48Speaker 1: a wild card. I have no expectations. I don't know
- 56:50Speaker 1: what that will be like, but um, that would be
- 56:52Speaker 1: a fun time to get out there and explore a
- 56:56Speaker 1: different landscape again. So that's it. And it's paid for
- 56:58Speaker 1: by the company. That is a it's it's nice to
- 57:01Speaker 1: be able to have my hunting be work as well.
- 57:05Speaker 1: So that's what my season looks like. It's it's it's
- 57:08Speaker 1: gonna be a busy one. And did we talk about
- 57:14Speaker 1: this on the podcast yet? Did I tell you this? Dan?
- 57:17Speaker 1: I don't know if I did tell you this. This
- 57:20Speaker 1: is what I've got a second child in the way.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Did I tell you that? I didn't know that until
- 57:25Speaker 1: right now. Yes, It's I'm so like lost on like
- 57:29Speaker 1: who knows and what Yeah, we got another one on
- 57:31Speaker 1: the way, so that makes him a little interesting. Get
- 57:33Speaker 1: that a stack to me, buddy, I know, yea, yeah,
- 57:38Speaker 1: this is the end for us, so good. Well, first off, congratulations, thanks,
- 57:44Speaker 1: thank you. Yeah, number two is a little scary though
- 57:48Speaker 1: everything you told me. All right, now, how old your
- 57:52Speaker 1: how old your boy? Right now? He's a little over
- 57:54Speaker 1: a year and a half now, a little over a
- 57:56Speaker 1: year and a half. Okay, cool, So he's really close
- 57:58Speaker 1: to my uh my son. So let's see. Do you
- 58:04Speaker 1: know if it's a boy or a girl yet? We
- 58:05Speaker 1: do not know yet? Do not you know? Are you
- 58:07Speaker 1: gonna find out? We are going to find out. We'll
- 58:09Speaker 1: get to find out in September. Cool. Well, congratulations, and
- 58:15Speaker 1: yeah I don't have three, I guess. I mean, I
- 58:17Speaker 1: don't know what else to say. Any any any advice
- 58:20Speaker 1: for having a toddler and a pregnant wife at the
- 58:22Speaker 1: same time. How should I deal with that during hunting season? Anything?
- 58:26Speaker 1: I need to be a little more careful about. Man,
- 58:29Speaker 1: You get out of the house, that's how you deal.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Just get out, leave for a week in Minnesota with
- 58:36Speaker 1: no service and Nebraska. Yeah, my wife's uh, it's it's
- 58:42Speaker 1: should be the exact same due date that ever was
- 58:45Speaker 1: so early February early February. Were you planning for this?
- 58:51Speaker 1: I mean, given your respective career, were you planning to
- 58:55Speaker 1: have a baby after January? We definitely, we weren't planning
- 58:59Speaker 1: everyone yet. We were thinking like a little bit later,
- 59:02Speaker 1: we would try, like a few like handful months later,
- 59:04Speaker 1: maybe we'd start, you know, trying to make that happen. Um, say,
- 59:09Speaker 1: were you about to say, start exploring, experimenting, but maybe
- 59:14Speaker 1: that try because this time, you know, we're gonna explore
- 59:20Speaker 1: each other's bodies. This time, I was trying to avoid
- 59:24Speaker 1: this conversation. Uh so, yeah, we're we we definitely do
- 59:30Speaker 1: try to keep hunting season in mind. Um, so we
- 59:33Speaker 1: wanted to avoid hunting season. But it was a little
- 59:35Speaker 1: bit of a surprise, but but certainly not so outside
- 59:38Speaker 1: of the real and possibility that it was totally shocking.
- 59:42Speaker 1: So yeah, we're excited. But of course it brings all
- 59:45Speaker 1: sorts of new things to mind, and and that will
- 59:47Speaker 1: probably change my hunting season a little bit. If if
- 59:49Speaker 1: you know, if the pregnancies more of a struggle for her,
- 59:52Speaker 1: if she's not feeling well or whatever, that I might
- 59:54Speaker 1: need to cut back on some stuff and be around more.
- 59:57Speaker 1: But um, yeah, this will be the last time season
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: with just one, so I gotta take advantage of it.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I supposed to. I've got one final thing I want
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: to cover with everyone because I feel we've covered our plans,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: We've covered our big goals. Um, you know my big
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: goal was mature buck in North Dakota, survive Minnesota. I
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: think I can kill two mature bucks in Michigan between
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the three different farms I talked about, and then Nebraska.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Just have a good time. Um, no expectations there. UM.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I want us each to think of a challenge for
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: one of the other two here, so you can we
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: could either give a challenge to each person or if
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: we just want to each pick someone and give them
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a chance. We've done this in the past year's Dan,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: We're gonna give one piece of advice or one thing
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: we want the other guy to do this coming season
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: or in the coming weeks leading up to this season.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: So we've got just something to push us a little harder.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: So I've got a couple. I've got one for each
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: of you. Um, and then I'll give you guy, it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: is time to think of yours. So for Josh, my
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: challenge for you is to we kind of have already
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: touched on this, but I still want to lock down
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: one good piece of private land that you can hunt
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: without having to ask someone else if you can do it. So,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: if that's this one piece that you've already been talking about,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: if you've got a position now that you can hunted
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: on your own and you're in good place, just lock
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: that down. My challenge for you is to get that
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: locked and to get it prepped so that you can
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: be out there in early November whenever you find the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: time and you can get that buck. So that's my
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: personal challenge to you. I really want to see you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: kill a good one in Michigan this year. I like that.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I think that's a good one because that would be
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: the challenge I would have given myself. Maybe it's too easy.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: My challenge for Dan, because of some of the struggle
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: not struggles, but challenges that both you and I have
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: had over the years, and we've talked about it, my
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: challenge to you is to try to find time to
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: continue your bow practice in season, so make sure that
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the season doesn't hit and then you just are running
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: around and you don't shoot your bow anymore. We gotta
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: we both need to have some killer shots on deer
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: this year, I think, and I think for both of
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: us to do that, we gotta keep keep up our
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: good habits or working on Now. We got to keep
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: that all the way through the season so we don't
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: all of a sudden have a month that passes by
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: during the season we haven't been shooting her bow. So
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: that's my personal challenge to you. Um, those are my two.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Do either one of you have an idea that you
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: want to share for any of us. I will say
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: something to Josh, And this is in all seriousness, by
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the way, It's not meant to be a joke. But
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: you only have one kid, and I heard you. I
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: heard you already talking about man, I gotta make sure
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I get home and and be there for my wife
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: when she needs me and family. How old your kid now?
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Just a couple of months? Six weeks old? Okay, six
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: weeks right, so that is probably the easiest age to
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: take care of a child. Yeah, right, do like this
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: is this is and I know it's stressful time a year,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: you know you're you're just new parents, but one kid
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: is easier to take is easier to watch than two kids.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Two kids are easier to watch than three kids. A
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: baby is easier to watch than a toddler. A toddler.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: A toddler is easier to watch them. And then you
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: get into activities and you're hunting. Is time as you
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: get older with your family is actually going to shrink.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: So my challenge to you is, although you do have
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: a kid, take advantage of this time to still continue
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: to hunt and make sure you put in time for
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: hunting to I mean, it's your passion, right, Like I said,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I think it, I think it will. I think I'm
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: confident that like we'll kind of figure it out right,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: we'll settle into like a good, um, a good routine
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: with him, and I think I'll have more time than
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: maybe what I'm thinking I will right now. Um, So
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: that's that's what I'm hoping for anyway. Um So, no,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I think that's that's some great points there. Yeah. And
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: then for Mark Man, I don't I don't know. I'm
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: just I wish I could hunt as much as you.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't necessarily have a challenge for
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: you other than I know there's times on some of
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: your farms where I you play on the side of caution.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: And I almost feel like there's a time, especially a year,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: where you're coming off killing an absolute stud animal, to
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: to try and be aggressive. And maybe I'm wrong and
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: an aggressive move doesn't work, but maybe I'm right in
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: an aggressive move maybe early in the season or um,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: when a deer pops up and you take a slow
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: step first before you take the fast step, take the
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: fast step first, and see what happens. I like it.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I definitely. I feel like every year that's something that
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: I liked that I have in the back of my
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: mind too, is I'm getting more and more comfortable with
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: being a little more aggressive. So I think that's a
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: good challenge. Thank you for that, Dan, Josh you anything, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I'm still thinking of one for Dan here, but I
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: got one for you. And we've talked a little bit
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: about it before, probably on air and off air, but
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: just to just to make sure you're you're you're enjoying
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: it right, like not stressing yourself out too much about
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: um what you need to be doing and and um,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: just making sure you remember what it's all about and
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: uh have a good time. UM. That would be my
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: my one challenge, and I think you've you've come along
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: way with that. I think probably um, having ever written,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: having a year that you had last year kind of
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: helped put things in perspective. But I just I worry
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: about you when you get stressed out about stuff. So
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: just keep keep that all in perspective and what getting
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: to do? Um and Dan Man, I don't I don't know. UM,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I think maybe along your lines of stuff, being aggressive.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I know you're gonna be on a couple of out
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: of state hunts that are probably going to be what
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: just a week in time, and just making sure you
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: stay aggressive. I think that was one of my mistakes
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: in North Dakota last year, was not being aggressive enough. Um.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: So yeah, just just stay after him, getting tight on
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: him if you can. And and uh, you only got
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: a week, can't screw it up too bad. So that's right,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: that's right. And it's public land, so it's almost like
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: it's meant to be screwed, screwed exactly. True. I've got
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: one more actually for all three of us, and it
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: kind of ties into situations that we're all in for
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: different reasons. Um. You know, Dan, you and I have
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: had at times occasional struggles with rushing our shots and stuff. Josh,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you haven't necessarily had that problem, but you know you're
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: still you know, I haven't hunt you haven't killed two
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: billion deer yet. Um So, I think all three of
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: us a good thing to do would be to try
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: to kill more deer in general, like kill more does
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: this year, just because we had this conversation with Mark
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Drew the other day and that there's nothing that prepares
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: you to handle the moment of truth better than just
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: being in it often, being in that moment often and
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: dealing with it. And so for me, dealing with these
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: different variations of target panic over the last couple of
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: years and trying to just lock down a better shot process.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Um I switched this back tension release that we've been
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: talking about, and for me, a personal goal is to
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: is to shoot more deer with my bow using that
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: back tension release, just to have like a newfound, rock
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: solid confidence in that thing. Um So, personally, I want
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: to target does earlier than usual, early and often, and
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: go into the rut like feeling like ice cold gonna
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: make it happen no matter what, because I've already yeah,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: because I've already put three doughs in the ground or
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: whatever it is, and I've had perfect shots, like I
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: want perfect shots this year. I don't want to have
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: a shot that's like when I was a little back
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: or I was a little high, but I got him. Um.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: I've had too many shots like that over the years
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: that they got the job done. I've been very fortunate
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: only wound one dear I didn't find right away. Um,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: but I don't want to have as well it was Okay,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I want perfect shots this year. That's my big goal
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: for myself. Um. Some I'm working hard trying to make
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: it happen. And um, we'll see if it comes together.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: But that's what I'm trying to push myself to do.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: So with that, I think we've covered a lot of ground. Um,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I'm good to wrap it up. A few guys there,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I gotta go fishing, so yeah, let's wrap it up. Nice.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Got your living the dream now? Man, that's all right.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: You should have seen my week this week. I deserve
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: to go fishing, all right, You deserve to go fishing.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Three kids doesn't sound so bad, seriously, all right, guys, Well,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: thank you Dan, thank you Josh, and uh, before you
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: know it, a few more weeks when we be out
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: there with the bows and arrows, so oh, let's get
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: after it and that will do it. Another episode is
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: on the shelf. Hopefully guys enjoyed this fun one bs
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: and a little bit and uh setting things up for
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the upcoming season. As you know, we'd like to have
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: these in depth interviews with different experts across the country.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: But then I also think it's important that we share
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: our own personal stories so you can kind of see
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: how we're trying to implement the different ideas that we're
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: learning from all these guests throughout the year. So now
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: you know kind of what we're shooting for, what we're
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: trying for, what's up to come in the coming weeks
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: and months, and hopefully you'll follow along, hopefully you have
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: some some exciting trips and hunts of your own, and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: hopefully laid out some goals you can be working towards.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: And Uh. In the meantime, I just want to thank
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you for spending this time with us, thanks for laughing along,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: for following along with our journey, and when we chat
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: to you next, I hope you'll stay wired to hunt
