- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Richard Duggan in the news and investigation is ongoing
- 0:03Speaker 1: following an incident on the Scopi Crescent in Saint John's
- 0:06Speaker 1: last night that resulted in the arrest of one person.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The RNC responded around seven thirty pm after someone called
- 0:12Speaker 1: to report lots of screaming before their phone line got disconnected.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Police arrived on the scene in numbers due to what
- 0:18Speaker 1: they say was a large number of people present. They
- 0:20Speaker 1: arrested a thirty nine year old man who had an
- 0:22Speaker 1: active warrant. The investigation continues. Charges have been laid after
- 0:27Speaker 1: a motorcycle crash that occurred after the same machine caught
- 0:30Speaker 1: the attention of police. Officers in the capital City. RNC
- 0:33Speaker 1: say they attempted to pull the motorcycle with two people
- 0:36Speaker 1: on board over around twelve forty five yesterday morning at
- 0:39Speaker 1: the intersection of Topsil Road and duns Wrote. Instead of stopping,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the machine fled and police decided enough to pursue in
- 0:45Speaker 1: the interest of public safety. The same motorcycle was found
- 0:48Speaker 1: minutes later heavily damaged after crashing near Black Marsh Road.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Police say the twenty six year old driver refused to
- 0:54Speaker 1: provide officers with a breath sample, and both he and
- 0:57Speaker 1: his twenty two year old female passenger were taken a
- 0:59Speaker 1: hospital for treatment. The driver has been charged with dangerous driving,
- 1:03Speaker 1: flight from police and refusal. His license has been suspended
- 1:06Speaker 1: and the motorcycle was seized. He's been released to appear
- 1:09Speaker 1: in court at a later date. The provincial government has
- 1:12Speaker 1: increased the one time subsidy for those seeking fertility treatment.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The funding is being increased from twenty thousand dollars to
- 1:19Speaker 1: twenty nine thousand dollars. Local obstetrician and Associate Professor of
- 1:22Speaker 1: Obstetrics and Gynecology at mon doctor Sean Murphy says anything
- 1:26Speaker 1: to help reduce barriers to those seeking fertility treatment is welcomed.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Anything we can do to kind of remove obstacles to
- 1:32Speaker 2: people accessing fertility care and good quality, high access fertility
- 1:35Speaker 2: care is important and this one will help kind of
- 1:39Speaker 2: move things forward in that direction. It'll remove another barrier
- 1:43Speaker 2: to fertility care, and as we work towards Heaven IVF
- 1:47Speaker 2: in our own province, will continue to work with the
- 1:48Speaker 2: minister in our team in an LHS to deliver that
- 1:50Speaker 2: care here in province. But in the meantime it's a
- 1:53Speaker 2: fantastic investment in families of our province.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Now moving into its third decade, the annual Puffin and
- 1:59Speaker 1: Petrol Patrol is underway in the Witless Bay and Babels area.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Every year, young puffin and storm petrol checks, which navigate
- 2:05Speaker 1: by stars in the night sky, become disoriented by artificial
- 2:09Speaker 1: light and end up stranded in communities where they are
- 2:11Speaker 1: vulnerable to traffic and predators. The Canadian Parks in Wilderness
- 2:15Speaker 1: Society or SEAPODS, has been involved in a puffin and
- 2:18Speaker 1: petrol patrol for the last twenty years, with volunteers fanning
- 2:21Speaker 1: out to pick up wayward pufflings and petrol checks. The
- 2:24Speaker 1: birds are then released over the water at night. Suzanne
- 2:27Speaker 1: Dewley of SEAPODS says this year's petrol patrols an early start,
- 2:31Speaker 1: which he says is a sign that food sources have
- 2:33Speaker 1: been healthy this year.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I saw a lot of caithling coming in in July,
- 2:36Speaker 3: so that means there was a good lot of food
- 2:38Speaker 3: sources and it lined up when the adult puffins would
- 2:41Speaker 3: be feeding the young chicks. And by the look at
- 2:44Speaker 3: the birds that have been rescued so far, they seem
- 2:47Speaker 3: to be pretty plump and happy birds. So we're very
- 2:49Speaker 3: happy that they seem to be very healthy and mother
- 2:52Speaker 3: nature parently aligned with us this year.
- 2:55Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Richard Duggan,
