- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I am Chadmill and we will be continuing our run
- 0:19Speaker 1: through every team in every division in both conferences in
- 0:25Speaker 1: the NFL UH this upcoming Thursday. But we do want
- 0:29Speaker 1: to take a quick pause because College Football Week zero
- 0:34Speaker 1: starts this Saturday. We got five games, five August games,
- 0:40Speaker 1: five scheduled games that are happening in the COVID era
- 0:45Speaker 1: that knock on would They're not being rescheduled, they're not
- 0:48Speaker 1: being canceled. We got some big name teams going. Speaking
- 0:52Speaker 1: of big names, the Action Network made a massive, massive
- 0:57Speaker 1: higher last week. We brought in Quip pop subly, the
- 1:00Speaker 1: most respected Capital J journalist in all of college football,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and the first thing he did was break a story
- 1:08Speaker 1: about Nebraska. I'm talking about America's college football insider, Mr
- 1:13Speaker 1: Brett McMurphy, and he's gonna come on the show in
- 1:15Speaker 1: a few minutes. We're gonna talk about a little bit
- 1:18Speaker 1: about the situation in Nebraska and the story he broke
- 1:21Speaker 1: last week. And then today it's Tuesday. It's Tuesday after
- 1:24Speaker 1: nume right now today on Action Network dot com and
- 1:27Speaker 1: in the Action Network app, he put out a piece
- 1:29Speaker 1: that he'll be updating throughout the year, UM every single week.
- 1:32Speaker 1: He is a master at projecting UH both scenarios, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: so his first piece for projecting both scenarios came out today.
- 1:41Speaker 1: We're gonna run through that. He's got a prediction for
- 1:43Speaker 1: the College football National Championship. We've got point spreads for
- 1:46Speaker 1: all those games. It's gonna be fascinating. We're gonna talk
- 1:48Speaker 1: about that first. Of course, I'm gonna bring in my BFF,
- 1:55Speaker 1: my companion, Mr Simon Hunter. Hello, sewing man, this is
- 2:04Speaker 1: the best time of year. Like you just said, college
- 2:06Speaker 1: football starts next week. That just makes a fly by
- 2:09Speaker 1: two right for me too, the NFL starts. But yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 1: the fans are happy, all my clients are happy. Had
- 2:14Speaker 1: another undefeated weekend giving out picks on the action app
- 2:18Speaker 1: UM Life is Good Man. Download it follows Stimon Simon
- 2:23Speaker 1: Hunter's picks up a thousand followers in just two weeks
- 2:26Speaker 1: on that app. That's how good I've been done. Man.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You you know what you are. Talk to me. You're
- 2:33Speaker 1: a gift. You're a gift to all of us, and
- 2:35Speaker 1: you're a professional like I wish. I wish everybody who
- 2:41Speaker 1: we hired and I'm not saying this for Ben McMurphy's benefit,
- 2:43Speaker 1: because he is a fucking pro. I wish everyone we
- 2:47Speaker 1: hired came in and was like as thoughtful about promotion
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the product, about commitment, about how they drive you,
- 3:00Speaker 1: because Simon, you are a goddamn gift. I tried, Chad,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and I try to explain to the fans here. If um,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you're betting a hundred dollars on my bets and you're
- 3:10Speaker 1: betting a hundred dollars on your your random picks that
- 3:13Speaker 1: you think are smart, you're either an idiot or you're
- 3:15Speaker 1: a narcissist. Stop betting the same amount of my bets
- 3:18Speaker 1: as you bet on your own bets. You don't know
- 3:20Speaker 1: what you're doing. Listen to your professionals, listen to our advice.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Bet more on my picks and your own pis. I
- 3:25Speaker 1: don't know. It's I've had plenty of people hit me
- 3:27Speaker 1: up there like, hey, how good do you feel about
- 3:29Speaker 1: this bet? And it's like, if I put it in
- 3:31Speaker 1: the app, I'm feeling pretty good about it. I don't
- 3:33Speaker 1: just put it in there just to put it in
- 3:35Speaker 1: there again. Someone reach out to me, Chad. They said,
- 3:37Speaker 1: no more unit talk because Chad said, So listen to Chad,
- 3:42Speaker 1: who are these people? From now on? I'm a units
- 3:44Speaker 1: guy from now on, So I want like sacking in
- 3:47Speaker 1: dollar amounts, only in units. Listen, Simon, I think you
- 3:51Speaker 1: know there's no bigger narcissist on this podcast than me.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And I won't even make bets that you don't make.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Chad Milman is proud of himself. That's it. That's all
- 4:04Speaker 1: there is to it. We do have a lot of
- 4:05Speaker 1: NFL stuff to talk about. The one thing I do
- 4:07Speaker 1: want to say, there are there are very early rumblings
- 4:11Speaker 1: because Matt Nagy has said that Andy Dalton will be
- 4:14Speaker 1: on a short lease. Dude, I'm not even talking about
- 4:18Speaker 1: the second game of the preseason for the Bears. I'm
- 4:20Speaker 1: not talking about Mitch Drobiski. The only thing that matters
- 4:23Speaker 1: is that in Game one, Justin Fields was brilliant. And
- 4:26Speaker 1: I don't care that there was now a meme of
- 4:29Speaker 1: him getting his head blown off that says I thought
- 4:33Speaker 1: the game really slowed down for me, and that you
- 4:35Speaker 1: were making front of that. It doesn't matter Justin Fields,
- 4:39Speaker 1: Chicago Bears, this is our guy, most consequential draft pick
- 4:45Speaker 1: in my fifty year lifetime. I'm gonna Scott, I don't
- 4:49Speaker 1: even touch them Mitch thing, because I already know. I
- 4:51Speaker 1: mean that all Bear fans must have just been sitting
- 4:53Speaker 1: there and saying, oh my god, if you just surround
- 4:56Speaker 1: Mitch with a competent coaching staff, he might actually be
- 4:58Speaker 1: pretty good. So that that is a Bearris fan and
- 5:01Speaker 1: was truly a snack. I'm not even telling you. I'm
- 5:04Speaker 1: not even telling you. So on Saturday, I went to
- 5:09Speaker 1: the uh as you guys know, after the podcast. On Thursday,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I went to the city. I was there all day.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I was there Thursday night, Friday, and then Friday night,
- 5:16Speaker 1: my older son who's going to college in a couple
- 5:18Speaker 1: of weeks, met me in the city. We had dinner together,
- 5:20Speaker 1: walked around the village. It was beautiful, great night. Got
- 5:22Speaker 1: to spend twenty four hours, you know, father suntime. I
- 5:25Speaker 1: loved every second of it. Saturday, during the day, We're
- 5:28Speaker 1: running around the city all day, so I'm not watching
- 5:30Speaker 1: the Bears game, and every two minutes my buddy Matt,
- 5:33Speaker 1: whose kid who we visited in California, whose kid I
- 5:36Speaker 1: was I was going to tote toe with about Mac
- 5:38Speaker 1: Jones and Justin Fields. Um No, joke. Matt is calling
- 5:42Speaker 1: me as we speak right now. How weird is that? Uh?
- 5:46Speaker 1: He was texting me every two seconds? Can we fire
- 5:48Speaker 1: a coach midway through the second game of preseason? Because
- 5:52Speaker 1: that's how we're disgusting disgust today. I'm by Matt Nagy
- 5:55Speaker 1: right now now. It's so hard life. I love too
- 5:58Speaker 1: that me and you predicted about four months ago, no
- 6:00Speaker 1: matter what, any Dalton's gonna start week one. I think
- 6:03Speaker 1: Naggy just came out and said, no matter what, any
- 6:05Speaker 1: Dolton starting week one. So it's crazy how simple and
- 6:09Speaker 1: basic that they are really keeping it over there. But
- 6:11Speaker 1: again we'll see. I have higher hopes, like as you do,
- 6:14Speaker 1: for Justin Fields's upcoming season. So you know what else,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I have high hopes for the level of journalism. The
- 6:25Speaker 1: quality of journalism at the Action Network has been raised
- 6:29Speaker 1: because when we when we got on the call and
- 6:31Speaker 1: you saw Brett McMurphy, you said, it's an honor to
- 6:34Speaker 1: have a professional on this podcast. Essentially, that's what you said. Essentially, Brett,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you're a journalistic sensation. How does that make you feel?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Hold on, I'm out into Simon to follow on my
- 6:50Speaker 1: Action app. As we speak, sorry, there we go. Good
- 6:54Speaker 1: jobs on early retirement, Brett. It's the smartest Chadham turning
- 7:00Speaker 1: my two weeks noticed, I am super pumped. Man. I'm
- 7:03Speaker 1: so excited. You know. I've only been here a short
- 7:06Speaker 1: week and just everybody I've dealt with has been incredible.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Still trying to figure my way around, uh around this place,
- 7:14Speaker 1: but I love it and so excited and as I
- 7:16Speaker 1: as I told you, um, you know in the past
- 7:18Speaker 1: few weeks, I think Action is a rocket ship and
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'm glad to be a part of it. We are
- 7:24Speaker 1: a freaking rocket ship. You are the fuel that is
- 7:27Speaker 1: going to drive us into the next universe. You come
- 7:32Speaker 1: on last week, forty eight hours after starting, you break
- 7:37Speaker 1: the story about Scott Frost and Nebraska. I love that.
- 7:40Speaker 1: As soon as you broke it, we had three or
- 7:42Speaker 1: four stories breaking down the betting implications for Nebraska this season.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's now been a week since the story broke. Tell
- 7:50Speaker 1: us the latest and what's happening with Nebraska, what's happening
- 7:53Speaker 1: with Scott Frost, what's happening with the investigation, and what
- 7:56Speaker 1: the reper concussions? Maybe yeah, Chad, Well being investigation continues.
- 8:01Speaker 1: There's been no resolution of it that you know. With
- 8:05Speaker 1: the n c A one thing I've learned is never
- 8:06Speaker 1: to predict what you think the outcome will be or
- 8:10Speaker 1: how long it will take. So this thing could be
- 8:12Speaker 1: resolved tomorrow, it could be resolved at the end of
- 8:15Speaker 1: the year, and then ultimately we'll see what the penalties are. Look,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't think the allegations are that serious. I don't
- 8:22Speaker 1: think the penalties are going to be that severe. You
- 8:25Speaker 1: may see Frost suspended a game or two possibly when
- 8:29Speaker 1: they do finally finalize their findings. However, I think big picture,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you look at it this way. Scott Frost was already
- 8:37Speaker 1: on the hot seat entering this year. He's the first
- 8:40Speaker 1: coach in sixty years with three consecutive losing seasons in Nebraska.
- 8:44Speaker 1: In March, I reported broke the news that Frost and
- 8:48Speaker 1: Nebraska we're trying to get out of the O U game,
- 8:51Speaker 1: which is unheard of. It is the fifth it's the
- 8:53Speaker 1: fiftieth anniversary of the nineteen seventy one Game of the
- 8:55Speaker 1: Century Number one Nebraska, number two. Oh you, they tried
- 8:59Speaker 1: to get out of that game game to play a
- 9:01Speaker 1: home game against a group of five team. Add to that,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you've got a new athletic director and Trev Alberts. So
- 9:07Speaker 1: now you've got the n c A investigation. So now
- 9:10Speaker 1: if Nebraska wants to make a move after the season,
- 9:13Speaker 1: they don't even have to reference the losing. They don't
- 9:16Speaker 1: even have to reference the Oklahoma debacle. They can they
- 9:19Speaker 1: can roll the n c A allegations out there to
- 9:21Speaker 1: be the easy way out. But Scott Frost went from
- 9:24Speaker 1: being on the hot seat and college football too. Now
- 9:26Speaker 1: I think he is on the hottest seat in college football.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And it's funny to call a the first game of
- 9:33Speaker 1: the year it must win, but that's a must win
- 9:35Speaker 1: game against Illinois. They cannot lose that game to Illinois
- 9:38Speaker 1: because I think then everything is just gonna snowball and
- 9:41Speaker 1: it's gonna be impossible for Frost to dig out of that.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I'm always a little bummed, and call me sentimental. I'm
- 9:48Speaker 1: always a little bummed when the college hero goes back
- 9:50Speaker 1: to his school and it just it fails miserably. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: am a huge fan of the romanticism of people going
- 9:59Speaker 1: back to where they're from, having great success, being there
- 10:02Speaker 1: for as long as they want. It's sort of blossoming
- 10:05Speaker 1: into this magnificent love affair that goes on for fifty years.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Is anyone else as sentimental as me? Simon? Do you
- 10:11Speaker 1: do you get the fields from those potential stories? I
- 10:15Speaker 1: done at all, a Chad, That's what makes you so unique,
- 10:18Speaker 1: It's true, Brett, do you get the fields? Can can
- 10:21Speaker 1: the Capital J get the fields? Yeah? Absolutely? And you
- 10:24Speaker 1: know what if you can? You know, look at Freezing
- 10:26Speaker 1: Cold takes Twitter account right now, and I'm sure you
- 10:29Speaker 1: can find me and probably another fifty other journalist that
- 10:34Speaker 1: thought this was a great, great higher I mean, he
- 10:37Speaker 1: went turned around UCFS program, he went thirteen to know
- 10:40Speaker 1: a UCF Um the favorite son comes home to Nebraska.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I thought everyone thought he would be a success. They're
- 10:48Speaker 1: kind of like Jim harbaught Michigan. But those things don't
- 10:52Speaker 1: always work out that way. Um, when you are in
- 10:54Speaker 1: a LUM, I think it buys you more time at
- 10:57Speaker 1: that university. I think people are willing to cut you
- 11:00Speaker 1: a break if you will. They're not as eager to
- 11:03Speaker 1: pull the trigger and maybe move on. Um. But certainly
- 11:06Speaker 1: I think Frost is getting near the end of that
- 11:09Speaker 1: grace period. Well he's certainly the honeymoon is definitely over.
- 11:12Speaker 1: But you know now, they're to the point of, well,
- 11:14Speaker 1: whether he's an a lum or not, we've got to
- 11:16Speaker 1: turn this thing around, and if he's not the guy
- 11:19Speaker 1: to do it, we'll find somebody else. What do you
- 11:21Speaker 1: think happened there? What went wrong for him? You know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: chat it's impossible point the finger at one specific thing.
- 11:29Speaker 1: All I look back on is when Bo Pollini was
- 11:31Speaker 1: coaching Nebraska. He told me this when I had a
- 11:35Speaker 1: one on one interview with him, and it really struck
- 11:38Speaker 1: with me, and he basically said, look, the challenge for
- 11:41Speaker 1: Nebraska is their fan base, which is arguably the greatest
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the country, remembers the glory days of the seventies,
- 11:48Speaker 1: the eighties, the nineties. Well, back then, Nebraska was a
- 11:51Speaker 1: handful of teams that were on television every week, so
- 11:54Speaker 1: it was easy for them to recruit from California. It
- 11:57Speaker 1: was easy for them to get Microzier to leave New
- 11:59Speaker 1: Jerry and come to Nebraska. Well, what happened, ESPN happened
- 12:03Speaker 1: now every team in the country is on TV. You
- 12:06Speaker 1: don't have to go across the country to play for
- 12:08Speaker 1: a team that's on TV every week. And the other
- 12:10Speaker 1: thing is leaving the Big Twelve. When they left the
- 12:13Speaker 1: Big twelve. Yes, it made sense financially to go to
- 12:15Speaker 1: the Big Ten, certainly now with what's going on the
- 12:17Speaker 1: conference realignment. But you know what it also did. It
- 12:20Speaker 1: also cut off the pipeline to Texas. You no longer
- 12:24Speaker 1: can recruit the Texas athlete because you're no longer playing
- 12:27Speaker 1: the schools from Texas. So you can't go down to
- 12:29Speaker 1: Texas and tell mom and dad, hey, your son is
- 12:32Speaker 1: gonna play in the state two or three times a
- 12:34Speaker 1: year in our conference because now you no longer play
- 12:37Speaker 1: in Texas. So now they're no longer a national recruiting threat.
- 12:41Speaker 1: They can no longer get kids out of the state
- 12:44Speaker 1: of the Texas, one of the top three states in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the country. And what bo Polini told me, Brett, this
- 12:50Speaker 1: is the hardest university in the country, big time university
- 12:54Speaker 1: to recruit to for those reasons, and also because in
- 12:57Speaker 1: the state of Nebraska you simply don't have that many
- 13:00Speaker 1: pality Division one players to chat. I think it's a
- 13:03Speaker 1: combination of all those things, and it's um it's unfortunate. Again,
- 13:08Speaker 1: Nebraska I think has the greatest fan base in the country,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and it's hard for them to swallow. Um the losing
- 13:16Speaker 1: that they've gone through in these past, you know, half
- 13:18Speaker 1: dozen years. All right, Well, listen, you mentioned ESPN and
- 13:25Speaker 1: in your story that was posted today projecting everything from
- 13:30Speaker 1: the National Championship Game who's going to be in it
- 13:33Speaker 1: throughout sort of basically every single bowl game, of which
- 13:38Speaker 1: there is two bowl games. You had a really interesting comment, Simon,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I bet you gotta take on this too as a
- 13:45Speaker 1: sports fan and is a better You basically noted that
- 13:50Speaker 1: the postseason in college football is controlled by ESPN and
- 13:56Speaker 1: explain sort of the construct and how the postseason work
- 14:00Speaker 1: today for people who might not really understand it, especially
- 14:03Speaker 1: since we're, you know, a couple of years from moves
- 14:05Speaker 1: from a regular bowl uh schedule, right, So I'll try
- 14:09Speaker 1: to make this as short as possible, But basically, last
- 14:12Speaker 1: year started the new six year cycle of all these
- 14:16Speaker 1: bowl games and their conference high ends. Last year, obviously
- 14:19Speaker 1: COVID that was everything was tossed to the side. They
- 14:22Speaker 1: just want to play as many games as possible. So
- 14:24Speaker 1: this basically is the first year of the new cycle.
- 14:27Speaker 1: What that means is the previous conference tie ins for
- 14:31Speaker 1: each bowls from before have now changed. The biggest change
- 14:35Speaker 1: that you're referring to is. Now, there are at least
- 14:38Speaker 1: twelve bowls that are owned, but they're actually there's sixteen
- 14:41Speaker 1: bowls that are owned by ESPN. Twelve of those bowl
- 14:44Speaker 1: games basically do not have conference affiliations. So if you're
- 14:49Speaker 1: a fan of the MAC, if you're a fan of
- 14:51Speaker 1: the Mountain West, if you're the American Conference USA, whatever,
- 14:55Speaker 1: you cannot say with a certainty we are going to
- 14:59Speaker 1: the Year Bowl, for example, because ESPN owns that bowl.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And so what they're doing is they are determining when
- 15:06Speaker 1: we get to the first Sunday in December, they will
- 15:09Speaker 1: announce what two teams from those five group of five
- 15:12Speaker 1: conferences will go playing that game. It doesn't matter what
- 15:16Speaker 1: conference they're in. And there's twelve of those games that
- 15:19Speaker 1: are all intertwined, and basically ESPN has to figure that
- 15:23Speaker 1: out based on the number of bowl games per conference.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So it's not gonna be the old days where you
- 15:29Speaker 1: simply could say, well, we know this game is gonna
- 15:31Speaker 1: be Big twelve versus SEC, or a C C versus
- 15:35Speaker 1: Pack twelve. Now it's basically there's a pool of tea,
- 15:39Speaker 1: a pool of conferences for those twelve games owned by ESPN.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So that's basically gonna be ESPN. The puppet master will
- 15:48Speaker 1: sit there and determine who goes to those games. Some
- 15:51Speaker 1: fan bases will be happy, some won't be happy. But
- 15:55Speaker 1: when you own sixteen of the forty two Bowl games,
- 15:58Speaker 1: that's what you have the power to do. As someone
- 16:00Speaker 1: like I've never met any of the Brakes News, I've
- 16:02Speaker 1: always wanted these questions. There's so many questions I have
- 16:04Speaker 1: for the break News. But I wonder, like, how many
- 16:07Speaker 1: phones do you have? Like I have a phone that
- 16:09Speaker 1: I give out for you know, I give the chat
- 16:11Speaker 1: that's my regular phone number. And I have a phone
- 16:13Speaker 1: that's like my burner phone, my batline, which I give
- 16:17Speaker 1: out the other professional gamblers and other guys where I
- 16:19Speaker 1: always keep two phones on me because if that phone
- 16:21Speaker 1: is buzzing, I know that it's like I have to
- 16:24Speaker 1: pick up that phone was breaking new people. The same thing,
- 16:27Speaker 1: like you give out certain numbers of certain people because
- 16:29Speaker 1: it's like, all right, this is more important information than
- 16:31Speaker 1: just my regular phone I use every day. Starry disappoints
- 16:34Speaker 1: to only I only have one phone. It's a landline.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Now I'm kidding, I do just I did just have
- 16:41Speaker 1: one phone. But what you say you know, it's kind
- 16:44Speaker 1: of my thinking. There's literally like five people, five of
- 16:48Speaker 1: my sources that I value more than anybody else. Like
- 16:51Speaker 1: if they text me right now and said the world
- 16:53Speaker 1: is ending, I would be tweeting the world is ending
- 16:56Speaker 1: and say, hey, guys, I gotta get off this call
- 16:58Speaker 1: without confirming it. That's how much I trust these guys.
- 17:01Speaker 1: That's how much I know they know, they know what
- 17:04Speaker 1: my job is. They're not going to give me bad information.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And then and then below that, you have a you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: variet dozens and dozens of sources. They give you all
- 17:12Speaker 1: kinds of tips. Some are good, some are bad. Um,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and then I follow it that way. But yeah, sorry,
- 17:18Speaker 1: unless chattle expense it. I'm just stuck with one phone.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Have a certain ring tone, no, but show you a
- 17:25Speaker 1: little inside into what I think is comedy. My ring
- 17:28Speaker 1: tone is the theme song from Curb Your Enthusiast Summon.
- 17:33Speaker 1: By the way, I'm so glad you asked that question
- 17:35Speaker 1: because one of the things Brett and I while we
- 17:37Speaker 1: both worked at ESPN, because ESPN like is so sort
- 17:41Speaker 1: of strange and how it constructs its organization, even though
- 17:46Speaker 1: I oversaw all of the digital and that included you know,
- 17:51Speaker 1: most of the people who are doing breaking news on
- 17:54Speaker 1: a day to day basis. Brett came in through the
- 17:57Speaker 1: television side, and so Brett was actually not in my
- 18:01Speaker 1: ORC So he and I didn't get to know each
- 18:02Speaker 1: other very well when we were both at ESPN, and
- 18:05Speaker 1: so I've really got to know him mostly like in
- 18:08Speaker 1: a recruiting process when I was, you know, trying to
- 18:10Speaker 1: woo him to come join us at Action and I
- 18:14Speaker 1: was struck by the level of intensity about breaking news,
- 18:18Speaker 1: about sourcing, like he is passionate about this and manic
- 18:23Speaker 1: about this. And so my question is about breaking news,
- 18:28Speaker 1: is it something that makes you nervous every day that
- 18:30Speaker 1: you're missing something? Actually, it's weird. It's like, as I
- 18:35Speaker 1: get further along in my career, went like, for instance,
- 18:37Speaker 1: the Nebraska story, as I'm getting ready to push the
- 18:40Speaker 1: sin button, and because i know the reaction it's going
- 18:43Speaker 1: to have, you know, I can't underestimate that. And I'm
- 18:46Speaker 1: not trying to make oh I'm some big guy or whatever,
- 18:49Speaker 1: but I know I know the impact of that. When
- 18:50Speaker 1: you're working on these things, you kind of know when
- 18:53Speaker 1: you're the only one that has something. There's other times
- 18:56Speaker 1: where you know everybody's gonna get this within five minutes,
- 19:00Speaker 1: so I've got a hurry up. So actually sometimes I
- 19:02Speaker 1: get nervous, like when I'm getting ready to push the
- 19:05Speaker 1: button and think, okay, do I have everything lined up?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Is there something? Did I triple check this? Did I
- 19:11Speaker 1: double check this? And kind I want to make sure
- 19:13Speaker 1: because and I tell you know, when I speak to
- 19:15Speaker 1: young journalists, I tell him this, and it's actually something
- 19:19Speaker 1: that John Calipari said something similar. He's like, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 1: nobody's gonna remember the hundreds of stories I got right.
- 19:26Speaker 1: They're going to remember the one you got wrong. And
- 19:29Speaker 1: like Calipari said, nobody's gonna remember the year we went there,
- 19:32Speaker 1: and I remember one, remember the one we lost in
- 19:36Speaker 1: the n c A tournament. So that's kind of how
- 19:38Speaker 1: I look at it now. And it's not that I
- 19:40Speaker 1: wasn't careful before, but obviously now with the you know,
- 19:43Speaker 1: a bigger platform, having been at ESPN. You know, when
- 19:46Speaker 1: I was at the Tampa Tribune, I had three thousand
- 19:48Speaker 1: followers on Twitter. Man, I was so impressed. I was
- 19:51Speaker 1: beating my chest. Three thousand. You know, now I'm almost
- 19:54Speaker 1: two d fifty thousand. That's ridiculous. But I understand, and
- 19:59Speaker 1: so I don't want to put stuff out there. You know,
- 20:01Speaker 1: well one, I would never put anything out there that
- 20:03Speaker 1: I'm not a d accurate that it's correct. But as
- 20:06Speaker 1: far as nervous, I realize I'm not gonna break every story.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I realized nobody's going to break a majority of stories.
- 20:13Speaker 1: There's a lot of a lot of great journalists out
- 20:15Speaker 1: there that do a lot of great work. So if
- 20:17Speaker 1: other people beat me, that's fine, a pet peeve of mine,
- 20:21Speaker 1: which you didn't bring this up, but I will, and
- 20:23Speaker 1: as when somebody breaks the story and other journalists don't
- 20:26Speaker 1: credit him, And that's why I do my damnedest that
- 20:29Speaker 1: if I report a story that I know someone else
- 20:33Speaker 1: had first, I will put sources told Action Network first
- 20:37Speaker 1: reported by x y Z because that little just that
- 20:41Speaker 1: little recognition goes a long way. And I'm sure there's
- 20:43Speaker 1: times where I've mistakenly didn't credit somebody that had somebody first,
- 20:48Speaker 1: But I don't, you know, I only follow a thousand people,
- 20:51Speaker 1: so I don't see everything that's out there. But if
- 20:53Speaker 1: I see somebody had something, I am absolutely gonna give
- 20:56Speaker 1: them credit because I know how it feels being on
- 20:59Speaker 1: the other to that you know when I was at
- 21:01Speaker 1: the Tampa Tribune and CBS Sports and all that and
- 21:03Speaker 1: would break stuff and ESPN wouldn't credit me, So I
- 21:06Speaker 1: certainly would have do my best to be able and
- 21:08Speaker 1: credit others if they happen to break it, because I'm
- 21:11Speaker 1: not I don't have the ego and one, I'm not
- 21:14Speaker 1: dumb enough to think I'm gonna break everything. That's simply
- 21:16Speaker 1: not gonna happen. So what's interesting is ESPN actually did
- 21:19Speaker 1: a phenomenal job crediting us. They credited us in the
- 21:22Speaker 1: alert better than us in on the ticker like it
- 21:25Speaker 1: was all over and kudos to them, and we appreciate it.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And I will say Fox Sports took the story and
- 21:32Speaker 1: basically ran it on their ticker and didn't mention that
- 21:36Speaker 1: took the entire story and ran on the ticker and
- 21:38Speaker 1: didn't mention action network was annoying. That is annoying. Um,
- 21:42Speaker 1: I don't know anyone at Fox or I would have
- 21:44Speaker 1: emailed him. But there also was I don't want to
- 21:47Speaker 1: name the specific website, but there was a website that
- 21:51Speaker 1: covers college football that basically took my first tweet about
- 21:54Speaker 1: Scott Frost and Nebraska and literally copied it word for word,
- 21:58Speaker 1: except they took out told Action Network. Everything else was
- 22:03Speaker 1: the same. And then they tweeted it with a link
- 22:06Speaker 1: to their story on their website, which was basically what
- 22:10Speaker 1: I reported, and they rewrote it, and I sent the
- 22:13Speaker 1: guy a text. I'm like, hey, you didn't even attribute
- 22:17Speaker 1: it to us. We broke it. And he's like, oh,
- 22:20Speaker 1: I'm sorry we put it in the story. I'm like,
- 22:22Speaker 1: I don't care. You tweeted it and you make it
- 22:24Speaker 1: look like you you broke the story. Can you please
- 22:27Speaker 1: correct it? They did delete it and put up a
- 22:29Speaker 1: new tweet. But you know that goes on so often
- 22:32Speaker 1: where I don't even A friend of mine actually text
- 22:34Speaker 1: me and notified me, but I didn't even see it,
- 22:36Speaker 1: So I'm sure that goes on more often than not.
- 22:39Speaker 1: But look, I'm not gonna name name. Some people do
- 22:42Speaker 1: a great job crediting others. Others won't credit others. That's
- 22:46Speaker 1: just their philosophy. I don't know why, So I just
- 22:48Speaker 1: tried to credit where credits. Do you know what My
- 22:51Speaker 1: take is, they're gonna be bad actors out there. We're
- 22:54Speaker 1: not going to be one of them. I gotta file
- 22:56Speaker 1: up for bread here. When you're going through all these
- 22:59Speaker 1: sources in my line of work. It's weird, like I
- 23:01Speaker 1: have due to give me information I've never met in
- 23:03Speaker 1: my entire life, Like i'ven't had dinner with these people,
- 23:06Speaker 1: and after a couple of times, you realize the information
- 23:09Speaker 1: is good you're getting from so that's why you keep
- 23:10Speaker 1: trusting them and things like that. Is it the same
- 23:13Speaker 1: in media where um, like, say a guy burns me,
- 23:16Speaker 1: I don't cut them off, but I'll definitely I won't
- 23:19Speaker 1: take his information and just run with it anymore. It's
- 23:21Speaker 1: one of those things where like, are there certain people
- 23:23Speaker 1: where you have to source with like three to four
- 23:25Speaker 1: other people before you can even run with it because
- 23:26Speaker 1: you're just like, Okay, this person has burned me before.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Because like you said, it's it's very weird people's agendas.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Um Like, in sports games, it's bizarre where groups will
- 23:35Speaker 1: give out bad infot because they want the line to
- 23:37Speaker 1: move against what they want to bet. So that happens
- 23:40Speaker 1: a lot, and you know, it's one of those things
- 23:43Speaker 1: where people know now, but they don't say anything because
- 23:45Speaker 1: it's just like, you know, we don't trust that group
- 23:46Speaker 1: in their information at getting. I wonder if it's the
- 23:48Speaker 1: same in the media world where people are trying to
- 23:50Speaker 1: screw you guys over to just to make their own
- 23:52Speaker 1: story better. Yeah, they try to. But I'm never gonna
- 23:55Speaker 1: go if you know, I get a an email that'says,
- 23:58Speaker 1: you know, hey, Michigan is under investigation, I'm not just
- 24:01Speaker 1: gonna you know, parrot it and report it right away. Now,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I'll check and see if it's true. Whether it's true
- 24:07Speaker 1: or not depends on whether I report it. But I'm
- 24:10Speaker 1: not gonna go simply with what somebody tells me. And yeah,
- 24:13Speaker 1: if I have an Ohio State fan tell me, oh,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Michigan's under an investigation, I'll take it with a grain
- 24:18Speaker 1: of salt because I get that a lot rivals will
- 24:21Speaker 1: try to out their rivals and they actually think, oh wow,
- 24:25Speaker 1: this guy is just gonna report what I send him.
- 24:27Speaker 1: So I'll check it out. But yeah, there's other people
- 24:29Speaker 1: that I know really well that give me info that
- 24:32Speaker 1: they're about fifty and then there's some people that are
- 24:36Speaker 1: like and then there's some that maybe you're five percent accurate.
- 24:41Speaker 1: But I'll check everything out, and yeah, I'm not I'm
- 24:43Speaker 1: never gonna go with anybody, go with anything unless I
- 24:47Speaker 1: can confirm it myself. So I guess I I haven't
- 24:50Speaker 1: been burned by that because, like I said, the five
- 24:52Speaker 1: people I trust with everything, they never purposely given me
- 24:56Speaker 1: any bad info. But but no, I get I check
- 24:59Speaker 1: everything out because the these days, you never know, you
- 25:01Speaker 1: never know what's gonna happen. And this this story I broke,
- 25:04Speaker 1: you know, a couple of years ago when I was
- 25:06Speaker 1: laid off from ESPN with was Zach Smith and the
- 25:09Speaker 1: domestic violence going on there in urban Meyer and and
- 25:12Speaker 1: all that. You know, Initially, when I got that information,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I thought, yeah, there's no way, no one knows anything
- 25:19Speaker 1: about this. This kid kid coached at Florita's at Ohio State.
- 25:22Speaker 1: This is there's no way it's true. And then I
- 25:24Speaker 1: kept looking into it, found out it was true, and
- 25:26Speaker 1: then proceeded to break that. So it's weird. You know,
- 25:30Speaker 1: you do have a lot of sources, but it's weird
- 25:32Speaker 1: you get so much information from you just if you
- 25:35Speaker 1: just talk to people. I'm sure with you with with
- 25:38Speaker 1: you know, gambling and trying to get information. The more
- 25:42Speaker 1: you talk to people and you just have conversations, they
- 25:45Speaker 1: may offer something up that you weren't even talking to
- 25:47Speaker 1: them about. And that's that's happened to me with the
- 25:50Speaker 1: Penn State when they're find thirty million dollars back with
- 25:54Speaker 1: the Sandusky stuff by the n c a A. I
- 25:56Speaker 1: was actually talking to someone trying to ironically and trying
- 26:00Speaker 1: to find out what teams we're gonna be going to
- 26:03Speaker 1: specific bowl games. And this person as we're talking, said, wow,
- 26:08Speaker 1: can you believe what about Penn State? And of course
- 26:11Speaker 1: I said, I had no idea what he's talking about.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And I said, oh, I know, can you believe that?
- 26:16Speaker 1: That's crazy? So I go, what, um, what did you
- 26:19Speaker 1: What did you hear? Exactly because I was heard a
- 26:21Speaker 1: bunch of different things that oh, they were fine, thirty
- 26:23Speaker 1: million dollars or sixty million where the number was. And
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's what I heard. That that's unreal. Man. Well, hey,
- 26:29Speaker 1: have a good day. Thanks. I'm like, holy crap. So
- 26:32Speaker 1: then I I followed through confirmed it. Whatever I broke it.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I was with CBS Sports back then. But yeah, so
- 26:38Speaker 1: I'm talking to this this guy about bowl bowl games
- 26:42Speaker 1: and who's going to go to the you know, International
- 26:45Speaker 1: Bowl or whoever. The bull is probably defunct right now,
- 26:48Speaker 1: doesn't exist. And the guy ends up, oh, by the way,
- 26:51Speaker 1: just dropping this huge, massive scoop, uh, you know, twenty
- 26:56Speaker 1: four hours before it was released, So you never know
- 26:59Speaker 1: where it's gonna come on. But I'm always gonna check
- 27:01Speaker 1: it out and confirm it before I ever put it
- 27:03Speaker 1: out there, the good old blockbuster bull. What's interesting, there's
- 27:10Speaker 1: there's becoming very little distinction between how Simon approaches sports
- 27:17Speaker 1: and information and then shares it on platforms like this
- 27:21Speaker 1: podcast or on Action Network, and how Brett approaches sports
- 27:24Speaker 1: and information and shares it on Action Network. You know,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Simon has come on the podcast, talked about sources, talked
- 27:31Speaker 1: about having information. Um it was. It was highlighted during
- 27:35Speaker 1: the draft where forty eight hours before the draft, when
- 27:39Speaker 1: everyone thought Mac Jones was gonna go number three, all
- 27:42Speaker 1: of a sudden there were rumors, largely in the gambling space,
- 27:45Speaker 1: that he wasn't going to go number three, and Simon
- 27:48Speaker 1: was ahead of that, talked about it, talked about the
- 27:50Speaker 1: sources that he knew to get that there's distinction, without
- 27:55Speaker 1: much difference between gamblers getting information and activating on it
- 27:58Speaker 1: and reporters and journalists like Brett activating on it. I
- 28:04Speaker 1: saw that with COVID though too, like you even mentioned
- 28:07Speaker 1: COVID last season, where like he said, he needs to
- 28:09Speaker 1: vent these things. He needs to go through three or
- 28:11Speaker 1: four people to confirm these stories. So Chefter might have
- 28:15Speaker 1: known that Denver. I remember Denver that that COVID case.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I texted you, I think on the Friday, or maybe
- 28:20Speaker 1: it was a Thursday, and then the whole thing came
- 28:22Speaker 1: out on a Saturday. Chefter probably the same info I did. Like,
- 28:25Speaker 1: he's in tune with Denver, but he can't put it
- 28:27Speaker 1: out there because there's a bunch of little things he
- 28:29Speaker 1: gets to go through before you can put that information
- 28:31Speaker 1: out there. Whereas where I'm gonna but I'm a sports
- 28:33Speaker 1: better we run with this information if we're getting information
- 28:36Speaker 1: and it's vented, where it's like, okay, a guy on
- 28:39Speaker 1: Denver's team who knows who it is could have been
- 28:41Speaker 1: the quarterbacks coach or someone like that. They were the
- 28:44Speaker 1: first ones to leak to lead to a friend who
- 28:46Speaker 1: leaked to another person. I leaked it out that the
- 28:48Speaker 1: cold quarterback room of Denver Broncos had COVID. So that's
- 28:51Speaker 1: again one of these things where Brett has to do
- 28:54Speaker 1: these things. Where As the vent these things, where as
- 28:56Speaker 1: a as a professional gambler. We put our money in first,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and then we then you know that, like you can't
- 29:01Speaker 1: miss this opportunity. So Brett, if he's a sports better,
- 29:04Speaker 1: I'm sure he puts a bet in before he breaks
- 29:06Speaker 1: the news. I mean, that's just I've even heard Shifter
- 29:09Speaker 1: here talking about he he does things in fantasy football.
- 29:11Speaker 1: He'll pick guys up before he tweets out that so
- 29:13Speaker 1: and so has hurt. So make no mistake, people, we
- 29:16Speaker 1: use this information to benefit ourselves before we give it
- 29:18Speaker 1: out to the masses. I don't know how I feel
- 29:20Speaker 1: about you saying that, what well you I broke the
- 29:24Speaker 1: tray the tray Lands News live with you, buddy. I
- 29:26Speaker 1: mean I think he cost me about so don't think
- 29:32Speaker 1: I don't give you the good stuff. I gave it
- 29:35Speaker 1: to you a plus three by the time I got
- 29:37Speaker 1: to Atlantic City it was plus one fifties. So I
- 29:39Speaker 1: love that I helped you out to do these things
- 29:41Speaker 1: with you. But it's also crazy the pool that actual
- 29:43Speaker 1: network has that information traveled that fast. We did one
- 29:47Speaker 1: live video of me on the side of the highway
- 29:48Speaker 1: on the Atlantic City Expressway. The line moved by plus
- 29:52Speaker 1: a hundred fifties. So again, I love this job. But
- 29:55Speaker 1: it's also interesting seeing that live like that happened in
- 29:57Speaker 1: real time. That was pretty pretty crazy to experience. He's
- 30:00Speaker 1: as Sigmon, so one one way, one thing I would
- 30:03Speaker 1: counter with what you just said, And you're right, there
- 30:05Speaker 1: are some similarities as far as you know from me
- 30:09Speaker 1: and Scheft Schefter's point of view, if we put something
- 30:12Speaker 1: out there and it's wrong, we can't take it back.
- 30:15Speaker 1: If you put in a If you put in a
- 30:17Speaker 1: bet and then you find out the guys the guy
- 30:20Speaker 1: is going to play, the guy isn't playing the opposite
- 30:22Speaker 1: of your information, you can come back on the other side.
- 30:26Speaker 1: It's gonna offset it a little bit, and it's not
- 30:28Speaker 1: going to destroy your reputation. That's what about the wording
- 30:32Speaker 1: for reporters. You guys put these certain words in these reports.
- 30:35Speaker 1: It kind of you know some guys, Yeah, some guys
- 30:39Speaker 1: do and yeah, and I hate the people that do
- 30:42Speaker 1: the and I'm probably I'm sure I'm guilty of doing this,
- 30:45Speaker 1: but they said, you know, expected to maybe you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: just come out and say you don't know. But some
- 30:52Speaker 1: people just want to be first and just say you know,
- 30:55Speaker 1: instead of saying, look, this is gonna happen on Tuesday,
- 30:58Speaker 1: Well this may have been on next week or whatever.
- 31:02Speaker 1: In fact, I love it when reporters come out and say, hey,
- 31:05Speaker 1: this may happen next week, this guy may be out
- 31:08Speaker 1: or whatever, because you're saying you don't know. What does
- 31:10Speaker 1: that to do. It tells me to go find out
- 31:12Speaker 1: if they're definitely gonna play or not, or if that
- 31:15Speaker 1: coach is gonna get fired, or if that meeting is
- 31:18Speaker 1: gonna happen, whatever it is. So no one's gonna remember
- 31:21Speaker 1: that last week that you said something may happen. They
- 31:24Speaker 1: will remember if you're the one that reported and said
- 31:26Speaker 1: it did happen based on whatever the information is. I
- 31:30Speaker 1: right now, obviously we are recording this podcast on a zoom.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I am staring at Brett mc murphy, I'm staring at
- 31:38Speaker 1: Simon Hunter, and I swear to god, I am seeing
- 31:41Speaker 1: the future of sports media literally this very second. This
- 31:46Speaker 1: is the confluence of all the forces coming together at
- 31:50Speaker 1: one time. It's starting here right now this week with
- 31:56Speaker 1: this podcast. Welcome to it. This is the beginning of
- 32:01Speaker 1: the next phase. Chad, one of my five guys, just
- 32:05Speaker 1: texted me the world's gonna end in two hours. Sorry
- 32:07Speaker 1: about it. This will be lived. We gotta go, we
- 32:10Speaker 1: gotta go. It was a good run, all right. I
- 32:13Speaker 1: do have I do have a bone to pick with
- 32:14Speaker 1: you right now because you're predicting in the College Football
- 32:17Speaker 1: Playoff national Championship. I do. We want to go through
- 32:19Speaker 1: some of these things. Ohio State in Alabama, those are
- 32:22Speaker 1: it's a terrible projection. Tell me why you're thinking that,
- 32:24Speaker 1: because I think it's probably gonna be Georgia and Oklahoma. Okay,
- 32:28Speaker 1: So this is what I'm basing it on. Is I
- 32:31Speaker 1: believe Alabama. I know all the losses they've had. I
- 32:35Speaker 1: understand that it happens every year. I'm not gonna bet
- 32:38Speaker 1: against Nick Saban. Yeah. Bill O'Brien's a new offensive coordinator.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Bryce Shawn's a new quarterback. I've seen this movie before.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Until somebody beats Alabama, I'm keeping them up there. Too
- 32:50Speaker 1: many times. I've tried to have been cute. I want
- 32:52Speaker 1: to be I want to be the guy that picks
- 32:54Speaker 1: against Alabama. I beg on my face, I'm sticking with Alabama.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I look at Ohio State eight. I think they will
- 33:01Speaker 1: are the I think they're the cream of the crop
- 33:04Speaker 1: in the Big ten. I think with that early nonconference
- 33:08Speaker 1: game against Oregon. I think that gives them additional strength
- 33:12Speaker 1: of schedule. And I my other two semifinal teams actually
- 33:17Speaker 1: are Georgia and Oklahoma, so I think Oklahoma will run
- 33:20Speaker 1: the table. In the Big Twelve, I think Georgia upsets Clemson. Uh,
- 33:25Speaker 1: you don't even Simon, you don't even need the three
- 33:27Speaker 1: take the money line. I like Georgia over Clemson, and
- 33:30Speaker 1: then I think Georgia takes care of business, but then
- 33:33Speaker 1: they lose in the SEC title game. I think a
- 33:36Speaker 1: twelve and one Georgia gets into the National title game
- 33:40Speaker 1: because Clemson losing that first game, they don't have a
- 33:42Speaker 1: strength of schedule to get back into the top four.
- 33:45Speaker 1: In the Pact twelve, I think is probably maybe the
- 33:48Speaker 1: overall the strongest top to bottom conference. The problem is
- 33:51Speaker 1: they don't have an elite squad. They're gonna beat each
- 33:54Speaker 1: other up. So of Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio State,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I think Alabama and Ohio State. Look, you know, I
- 34:03Speaker 1: hate it, the same teams, but until somebody can beat him,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna go a different way.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You don't even have Clemson playing in a New Year's
- 34:15Speaker 1: Day Ball, Yes, I did. That's a they're they're not
- 34:19Speaker 1: in the Peach Bowl. It's the it's the Chick fil
- 34:24Speaker 1: A Peak Bowl on Decem right, that's the that's one
- 34:28Speaker 1: of the New Year's six. It's they moved the dates
- 34:31Speaker 1: around for those other non semifinal games. That's like the
- 34:35Speaker 1: A p M game. Then, Uh, I don't have that
- 34:40Speaker 1: in front of me, but yeah, I'm sure it is.
- 34:43Speaker 1: But it's basically this year, the Cotton Bowl and the
- 34:47Speaker 1: Orange Bowl have the semifinal games. Okay, the Rose Bowl
- 34:51Speaker 1: and the Sugar Bowl get their conference tie ends with
- 34:55Speaker 1: the Big Ten, Pack twelve, Big twelve, and SEC. Those
- 34:59Speaker 1: games have to be played on January one, Rose Bowl
- 35:03Speaker 1: and Sugar Bowl even though they're not the semis. So
- 35:06Speaker 1: that that means they move the Peach and the Fiesta
- 35:10Speaker 1: off of the first, and they moved the semifinals off
- 35:13Speaker 1: off of the first. Do you have? I do have
- 35:17Speaker 1: Clemson in the Peach Bowl against Oregon, who I think
- 35:21Speaker 1: we'll win the Pac twelve. Yeah, it's interesting that you
- 35:24Speaker 1: say the Pack twelve is the strongest top to bottom
- 35:27Speaker 1: because every year that's the conference that feels like it's
- 35:31Speaker 1: going to fade. They I mean, look, there's again, it's
- 35:37Speaker 1: the preseason top twenty. Take it with a grain of salt.
- 35:39Speaker 1: They've got five teams in the top and I think
- 35:42Speaker 1: they're all deserving, and I think all five of them
- 35:45Speaker 1: can win the conference. That's the good news. The bad
- 35:48Speaker 1: news is um depth of your conference does not earn
- 35:52Speaker 1: you a bid to the College Football Playoff. So you know,
- 35:56Speaker 1: the SEC I think has has war five in the
- 36:00Speaker 1: top five. But how many teams realistically can win the
- 36:04Speaker 1: SEC this year? Probably to maybe two and a half
- 36:08Speaker 1: for three. How many teams can win the Big ten?
- 36:11Speaker 1: Maybe Ohio State and maybe somebody else who gets hot.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Who can win the Big twelve? Maybe Oklahoma obviously, maybe
- 36:19Speaker 1: Iowa State. So that's the big difference with the Pack twelve.
- 36:23Speaker 1: And that's been their problem is that they are they
- 36:26Speaker 1: are so those, so good and so solid, but they're
- 36:30Speaker 1: gonna beat each other up. They're gonna end up with
- 36:33Speaker 1: two or three losses, and you cannot get in the
- 36:35Speaker 1: playoff that way. And look, I look back at the
- 36:38Speaker 1: past seven years of the college football playoffs. There was
- 36:41Speaker 1: one year if we would had a twelve team playoff,
- 36:43Speaker 1: the SEC would have only got one team in a
- 36:47Speaker 1: twelve team playoff. It just happened to be Alabama who
- 36:50Speaker 1: won the national title that year. So nobody remembers the
- 36:54Speaker 1: SEC only had one team in the final Top twelve.
- 36:57Speaker 1: They remember the SEC won the national title that year,
- 37:00Speaker 1: and so that's what everyone judges the PAC twelve on unfairly,
- 37:04Speaker 1: I think is they haven't been to the playoff. They
- 37:06Speaker 1: haven't won a playoff. Man, these guys suck when actually,
- 37:10Speaker 1: if you had a challenge between the conferences and went
- 37:13Speaker 1: with theird top against the other and ranked him and
- 37:16Speaker 1: went down, I think the PAC twelve would hold their
- 37:18Speaker 1: own with with any conference in the country. And now

- 39:07Speaker 1: This is a little out there question, but I just
- 39:09Speaker 1: think it's so interested in football where we see dinces
- 39:12Speaker 1: eventually fall apart and turn into nothing. So we saw
- 39:14Speaker 1: Miami have that great run, they fall back to nothing.
- 39:17Speaker 1: We saw happen with Florida State. I mean even Bama
- 39:19Speaker 1: before Nick Saban, they were kind of a nothing organization.
- 39:22Speaker 1: It feels like we've had a run here where it's
- 39:24Speaker 1: just Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, It's Clemson that team.
- 39:29Speaker 1: It's Clemson about to fall off because if it reached
- 39:32Speaker 1: many things with this power alignment, all these teams shifting
- 39:35Speaker 1: all these different groups, and Clemson, you know, they're the
- 39:38Speaker 1: big dogs in a CECYC. So I get why they're
- 39:39Speaker 1: staying there. But is that the next team that's going
- 39:42Speaker 1: to fall off like the Miami did in Florida State?
- 39:44Speaker 1: Did you know? I don't think, Simon, I don't think
- 39:47Speaker 1: they're gonna fall off to the extreme that the Miami
- 39:50Speaker 1: and Florida State did. I still think they're they're the
- 39:53Speaker 1: class of the A C C. But but you wonder,
- 39:57Speaker 1: you know, look, dab but Swiney's done an incre doable
- 40:00Speaker 1: job there. I mean, it's it's gotten to the point
- 40:02Speaker 1: where three or four years ago everybody said he would
- 40:05Speaker 1: be the successor to Nick Saban Dabo would go back
- 40:08Speaker 1: to Alabama. To now the the nobody thinks that. They're like,
- 40:14Speaker 1: why does he got to go to Alabama? He can
- 40:16Speaker 1: do what he needs to do at Clemson. UM, but
- 40:18Speaker 1: you wonder how long he can keep that keep that going.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I believe last year was the first year. It ended
- 40:25Speaker 1: the streak of seven consecutive years where Clemston had finished
- 40:30Speaker 1: the season ranked higher than they were in the preseason
- 40:35Speaker 1: a people and that included one year where they started
- 40:37Speaker 1: out at number two. So it's been remarkable what Clemson
- 40:41Speaker 1: has done there. You wander with conference realignment, with the
- 40:45Speaker 1: SEC getting stronger, Obviously there's a larger degree of difficulty
- 40:50Speaker 1: with Oklahoma moving to the SEC. UM I don't think
- 40:54Speaker 1: you're gonna see them as dominant as they've been, as
- 40:57Speaker 1: they were in the Big twelve. So but I don't
- 40:59Speaker 1: necessarily think they're gonna fall off a cliff. Look, Alabama's
- 41:03Speaker 1: until Nick Saban retires, and even then that will be
- 41:07Speaker 1: twenty years from now. Even when they do, I'm sure
- 41:10Speaker 1: they'll have a computer program developed by then that will
- 41:13Speaker 1: just mimic Saban until the end of time and Alabama
- 41:17Speaker 1: win the next fifty national titles. I don't think they're
- 41:21Speaker 1: going anywhere. Ohio State with Ryan Day great young coach,
- 41:25Speaker 1: unless he moves to the NFL. UM I don't see
- 41:29Speaker 1: them going anywhere. So of those four, Simon, I would
- 41:32Speaker 1: agree that probably Clempson's the one. But again, look, everyone
- 41:36Speaker 1: complains about this. I don't like that we have the
- 41:38Speaker 1: same matchups. Chad just did my Bolt projections. It's the
- 41:41Speaker 1: same four teams. But look, there's one way to change that,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and that's to beat those teams. Nobody's figured out how
- 41:48Speaker 1: to beat him yet. S I mean, I feel like
- 41:50Speaker 1: you're asking better questions on this podcast than I am.
- 41:54Speaker 1: I'm just more interested in what Brett does. I like,
- 41:58Speaker 1: not that I want that job, because I can't imagine
- 42:00Speaker 1: the stress. Like I'm a nobody, So for me to
- 42:02Speaker 1: break news like you said, it's nothing to me, but
- 42:05Speaker 1: for you, I couldn't imagine it. So that's what I'm
- 42:07Speaker 1: just so intrigued because like your first story. I read
- 42:09Speaker 1: that and I was like, holy shit, man, this is
- 42:12Speaker 1: like real, real stories being broken here. So it's just
- 42:15Speaker 1: so cool to be able to talk you and ask
- 42:16Speaker 1: you these kind of questions. All right, let me ask
- 42:18Speaker 1: you one last question. Let me ask you one last question. Uh.
- 42:21Speaker 1: In the Bowl projections, which one was the hardest projection
- 42:26Speaker 1: to make? And why? It's actually the who's going to
- 42:31Speaker 1: the semifinal? Chad because who you put put in the
- 42:34Speaker 1: semifinal impacts everything below it. So when I don't have
- 42:38Speaker 1: Clemson in the semifinal, then it impacts you know, where
- 42:42Speaker 1: they go. Five Clemson in the semifinal, that totally changes
- 42:46Speaker 1: that the other New Year's six games, and so it
- 42:48Speaker 1: starts at the top. There's really not one that's harder
- 42:52Speaker 1: than the other. What makes it very difficult. And I
- 42:54Speaker 1: actually actually looked this up the non including last year,
- 42:59Speaker 1: which was COVID. The bowl system was screwed up the
- 43:02Speaker 1: previous three years. I actually kept practice for some stick reason.
- 43:06Speaker 1: My final Bowl projections, which will run Sunday morning before
- 43:10Speaker 1: they're announced Sunday afternoon, I've hit seventy five of the
- 43:16Speaker 1: teams in the bowl, exact bowl that they got a
- 43:20Speaker 1: bid to believe me, Week one out of the gate
- 43:22Speaker 1: is not. But when we get to the end, I
- 43:25Speaker 1: have a better idea. What's gonna make it difficult, which
- 43:28Speaker 1: I talked about a little earlier, is these twelve Bowl
- 43:30Speaker 1: games where I can't say, oh, I know a team
- 43:34Speaker 1: from the American is going in that game and they're
- 43:37Speaker 1: gonna play Conference USA. I no longer know that. All
- 43:40Speaker 1: I know is it's gonna be one of five conferences,
- 43:42Speaker 1: so that that will be literally impossible to peg because
- 43:46Speaker 1: once you missed, you know, unlike a test, once you
- 43:49Speaker 1: miss one, it impacts the rest of your picks because
- 43:53Speaker 1: then it's a domino effect. If if the one app
- 43:55Speaker 1: tops wrong, then a lot of them down below were wrong. Well, listen,
