- 0:07Speaker 2: but I think right.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Texas, Texas originally. Oh really I didn't, but you know,
- 0:12Speaker 3: but mostly Washington stays right.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Grow up. Yes, Sean is.
- 0:16Speaker 2: We're a reporter and editor at the Salt Lake Tribune
- 0:19Speaker 2: sl trip dot com, and he's a movie reviewer. You
- 0:22Speaker 2: can find his movie reviews at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:26Speaker 2: All right, what do we got?
- 0:27Speaker 3: We got three new movies to talk about. They're all
- 0:29Speaker 3: really good. Oh nice thing. We'll start with the Ugly Stepsister.
- 0:33Speaker 3: This is a very disturbing take on a classic fairy
- 0:36Speaker 3: tale from Norway. We have Elvira, who's who. She's not ugly,
- 0:40Speaker 3: she's just not a beauty queen. She's her nose, Her
- 0:43Speaker 3: nose is a bit off. She wears braces. But then
- 0:46Speaker 3: the prince in this kingdom says he wants to meet
- 0:48Speaker 3: all the young virgins so he can find himself a bride,
- 0:51Speaker 3: and and Alvira's mother is going to go all out
- 0:55Speaker 3: to get her there. Some of this involves medieval plastic
- 0:58Speaker 3: surgery with a chisel that was sewing on false eyelashes,
- 1:04Speaker 3: and the finishing school, weight loss, secret tapewor a meg
- 1:10Speaker 3: so as as all that indicates. Yeah, we're doing body
- 1:12Speaker 3: horror here, not not as extreme as the substance, but
- 1:15Speaker 3: you know what is is.
- 1:18Speaker 1: No, it is very dark.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And what's what's really interesting here is how the filmmaker
- 1:26Speaker 3: pinpoints how much of you know, we think of the
- 1:29Speaker 3: evil Stepsister. Not so much evil is just terrified, Yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 3: you know, scared of her mother, scared of being alone,
- 1:35Speaker 3: scared of getting come up, of come up, and for
- 1:38Speaker 3: how they've treated poor little Cinderella. And the real enemy
- 1:41Speaker 3: might be the patriarchy that sets all these insane beauty standards.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Exactly three and a half stars for the Ugly Stepsister.
- 1:48Speaker 3: It's over at the Broadway, all right. Yes, it's an
- 1:51Speaker 3: easy Norwegian, all right. Next is the Wedding Bank. What
- 1:55Speaker 3: this is a remake actually of a of a nineteen
- 1:57Speaker 3: ninety three Angle E movie. Oh I didn't know that
- 2:00Speaker 3: first first movie that ever quoted me in an ad really, yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 3: that's kind of cool. In that movie, it was an
- 2:08Speaker 3: immigrant Chinese immigrant who's gay. Mary's a woman so he
- 2:11Speaker 3: can get his green card because he can't marry his boyfriend.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Because it's nineteen ninety three. I don't do that yet.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So in the new version, yeah, I mean, we have
- 2:19Speaker 3: a Korean immigrant who in Seattle who could marry his boyfriend,
- 2:23Speaker 3: but his rich family back at home in Korea would
- 2:25Speaker 3: probably disown him. And the boyfriend played by Bow and
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yang doesn't want to ruin his life like that, so
- 2:31Speaker 3: he says no. So the Korean immigrant actor named Han
- 2:34Speaker 3: Hanji Chen asks asks her boyfriend his boyfriend's best friend,
- 2:41Speaker 3: Angela played by Kelly Marie Tran, to marry him. And
- 2:44Speaker 3: Angela is in a committed relationship with Lee played by
- 2:47Speaker 3: Lily Clodstone.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You know, actually, but.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Angela and Lee want to have a baby, and Lee's
- 2:54Speaker 3: gone through IVF twice and failed and they can't afford
- 2:57Speaker 3: a third try. So the boy the immigrant man, he
- 3:01Speaker 3: offers to pay for Lee's I VF if Angela will
- 3:03Speaker 3: do the green card wedding right. And then things get
- 3:06Speaker 3: complicated when Men's grandmother played by Yun Juhung, who was
- 3:11Speaker 3: who won the oscar from Minari a couple of years ago,
- 3:14Speaker 3: suddenly arrives to meet the meet the fiance, and Grandma
- 3:17Speaker 3: assists on a traditional Korean wedding all the all the
- 3:20Speaker 3: bells and whistles. So yeah, this is very funny, it's
- 3:23Speaker 3: very sweet. I love the ensemble cast. Kelly Marie Tran
- 3:28Speaker 3: I think is lovely. She's she's very cool. She took
- 3:31Speaker 3: so much crap when she was in the Star Wars
- 3:32Speaker 3: movie Bad Star Wars fans. Lily Gladstone also lovely. Bone
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yang of course is really he's really funny here and
- 3:39Speaker 3: also he actually shows he can do you know.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Serious.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say this version is better than the
- 3:47Speaker 3: ninety three, but it does raise the stakes in some
- 3:50Speaker 3: interesting ways, and it's true to life.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Now, so a good update. It's a good update.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Three and a half stars, and it's playing in a
- 4:00Speaker 3: few places around town. All right, now, this is the
- 4:02Speaker 3: one I've been waiting for. Yeah, Sinners, this is this
- 4:07Speaker 3: is a movie.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:08Speaker 3: You come because you see the vampire carnage in the trailer,
- 4:12Speaker 3: and you stay because the supernatural lore and the period
- 4:15Speaker 3: depiction of the gym Coast Jim Crow South ninety two.
- 4:20Speaker 3: You've got twin brothers named Smoke and Stack. Those are
- 4:23Speaker 3: their nicknames, and they've they've come home to Mississippi with
- 4:27Speaker 3: a lot of money and a truck of bootleg booze
- 4:30Speaker 3: they got in Chicago. They don't want to talk about
- 4:32Speaker 3: how they got it, and it's assumed they did something
- 4:35Speaker 3: when they were up in Chicago and that it will
- 4:37Speaker 3: be only a matter of time before somebody comes down
- 4:39Speaker 3: to get to get it back and do nasty thing. Yeah.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Their dream is to open a juke joint, which they do,
- 4:47Speaker 3: and they find a young man of Preacher's son who
- 4:49Speaker 3: plays blues guitar so beautiful that they take this kid,
- 4:52Speaker 3: you got to come play for us. And as it's
- 4:55Speaker 3: explained in the movie, some people make music. It's so
- 4:58Speaker 3: beautiful that it crosses generations, brings past and future together,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and sometimes brings sometimes something evil will follow in that
- 5:07Speaker 3: in that wake, which is where the vampires come in.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And well, I mean they only come in when they're invited.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That that's that's a rule.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Okay. H The twins are played by Michael B. Jordan.
- 5:18Speaker 1: He's really good.
- 5:20Speaker 3: He's really having fun playing these sort of opposite characters
- 5:22Speaker 3: frequently in the same frame.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Directed by Ryan Kugler.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Jordan and Kugler every every movie Coogler's made, Ryan Michael
- 5:29Speaker 3: Jordan's been in it, uh, Fruitvale Station, Creed, both Black
- 5:32Speaker 3: Panther movies, and he and and Kugler is really good
- 5:37Speaker 3: on the mythology and the and the sort of magical realism.
- 5:40Speaker 3: When there's a great scene where where when the kid
- 5:42Speaker 3: is playing in the juke joint, you start seeing like
- 5:47Speaker 3: West African drummers walking on the dance floor and then
- 5:50Speaker 3: like break dancers and turntablists and so on, and it's
- 5:54Speaker 3: like past and future all mixing in the in in
- 5:56Speaker 3: the super natural, it's very cool. It's nice sort of
- 5:59Speaker 3: magical realism. But and then but then there's vampires. It
- 6:02Speaker 3: does take a it does take a minute for the
- 6:04Speaker 3: vampire stuff to kick in, which is which if you
- 6:08Speaker 3: have just a tad bit of patience, it's fine. What
- 6:11Speaker 3: you're getting up to then is really cool. It's very exciting.
- 6:16Speaker 3: But when it does happen, it's very exciting, it's very chilling.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Reminded me actually a little bit of from Dust Till
- 6:20Speaker 3: Dawn in that way, so that it's pretty gory too.
- 6:24Speaker 3: It's it ain't it ain't it ain't sparing. It is
- 6:26Speaker 3: definitely an R rated movie. So, uh, three stars, three
- 6:30Speaker 3: and a half stars for sinners. Buddy Guy is in
- 6:33Speaker 3: this movie, yes, but I'm not going to say a
- 6:35Speaker 3: word about why. Okay, so uh three and a half
- 6:39Speaker 3: stars for Sinners, and it's playing all over the place.
- 6:42Speaker 3: One one bit of advice when the credits start rolling,
- 6:45Speaker 3: don't move. Stay there's there's there's a few minutes more
- 6:48Speaker 3: stuff that you've gotta you gotta sit for and enjoy.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Three and a half four and that's playing everywhere. That's everywhere.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Next week we got the accountant to.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Ben Affleck is back, and this time he's got John
- 7:03Speaker 3: Burnhal as his assassin brother, hit man brother or something
- 7:07Speaker 3: like that. Because it's a burn Thal's John Burnhal. You
- 7:10Speaker 3: know he's got to do you got to shoot somebody.
- 7:12Speaker 3: He's got to be a brute. And then there's the
- 7:14Speaker 3: Legend of Ochi, which is sort of a strange children's
- 7:17Speaker 3: fable about magical creatures being hunted by ewans. This is
- 7:20Speaker 3: this is a movie where you know, you know things
- 7:22Speaker 3: are going to be weird, but then you see William dafohone, Okay, okay,
- 7:25Speaker 3: just got weirder.
- 7:26Speaker 1: YEP always does.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Thank you, Shawn means Shaw means a sl trip dot
- 7:32Speaker 2: com movie, Cricket dot NEP
