- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome in to another episode
- 0:12Speaker 1: of the Checo Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter
- 0:16Speaker 1: for InsideTheBirds.com. And it's Wednesday, which means we have our
- 0:20Speaker 1: first injury report of the week. Not practicing on Wednesday,
- 0:24Speaker 1: running back Saquon Barkley, hamstring, defensive back Michael Carter, abdomen,
- 0:29Speaker 1: outside linebacker Jalux Hunt, knee, ankle, center Drew Kendall, knee,
- 0:33Speaker 1: running back Will Shipley, foot, wide receiver Devontae Smith, hamstring,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and toe. Limited, cornerback Ja'Corian Bennett, knee. Wide receiver Marquise Brown, ankle.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Tight end Grant Calcaterra, back. Guard Landon Dickerson, knee. Outside
- 0:49Speaker 1: linebacker A.J. Epinesa, back. Safety Marcus Epps, groin. Outside linebacker
- 0:54Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard, ankle. Tight end E.J. Jenkins, toe. Guard Tyler Steen, shoulder.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Tight end Eli Stowers, quad. Wide receiver Dontavian Wicks, hamstring. Full,
- 1:07Speaker 1: linebacker Zach Bond, shoulder. Linebacker, Jahad Campbell, knee, wrist. Defensive tackle,
- 1:13Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, wrist. Outside linebacker, Arnold Ebikadig, shoulder. Quarterback, Jalen Hurts, calf. Tackle,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Fred Johnson, knee. And safety, Andrew Makuba, shoulder. So let's
- 1:25Speaker 1: break down the non-participants. Saquon Barkley, when we got out
- 1:31Speaker 1: there for the portion that was open to reporters... There
- 1:35Speaker 1: was no sign of Saquon Barkley. I didn't see Saquon
- 1:38Speaker 1: last week either. So perhaps he's a little bit further
- 1:43Speaker 1: away than maybe a Devontae Smith this week. Again, with
- 1:47Speaker 1: these hamstring injuries, you can never be quite sure. And
- 1:50Speaker 1: I can always tell you that he wasn't out there
- 1:53Speaker 1: when we were out there. So that's not to say
- 1:55Speaker 1: that he didn't come out later on, but that's the situation.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And Michael Carter sustained the abdomen injury in the game
- 2:02Speaker 1: in London last He played 25 snaps, so he exited
- 2:06Speaker 1: fairly early and did not return. Kenny Moore replaced him.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Kenny Moore played 44 snaps in that game. And Vic
- 2:14Speaker 1: Fangio seemed to be pretty impressed with how he performed,
- 2:20Speaker 1: given that he really hasn't repped at safety much at
- 2:22Speaker 1: all in his career. So Michael Carter is a pretty
- 2:25Speaker 1: significant injury because I think he was playing well. And granted,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it was a game and a half, give or take,
- 2:33Speaker 1: that you got to see him in a larger capacity
- 2:36Speaker 1: at safety. But you can see his tackling ability, the
- 2:39Speaker 1: angles that he takes, his football acumen.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He's a smart guy.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And I think he gives you a little bit more
- 2:45Speaker 1: than maybe you're getting from Marcus Epps. So that's a
- 2:47Speaker 1: really thin position. Safety, it already was. But not having
- 2:53Speaker 1: Michael Carter makes it all the more razor thin. And
- 2:57Speaker 1: then I guess if you're looking at it from an
- 2:59Speaker 1: optimistic standpoint, practicing today was Marcus Epps, who, of course,
- 3:06Speaker 1: missed the last couple of weeks with a groin injury.
- 3:09Speaker 1: He was out there, so that's obviously something good to see.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He was limited today, but getting back there on the
- 3:16Speaker 1: practice field would seemingly bode well, assuming there's no setback.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So you lose, potentially, Michael Carter. We'll see what Thursday holds,
- 3:26Speaker 2: but you get back Marcus Epps.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So they are still thin at that position, but that's
- 3:33Speaker 1: something worth monitoring.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Outside linebacker Jalux Hunt with the knee ankle.
- 3:37Speaker 1: That was a pretty nasty-looking injury right before the half
- 3:41Speaker 1: in London, but thankfully Jalux avoided anything serious.
- 3:46Speaker 2: The Eagles did not place him on injured reserve or
- 3:49Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Vic Fangio, however, did say that it would be pretty
- 3:53Speaker 1: miraculous— those are his words— for JLX to make it back
- 3:56Speaker 1: and be available on Sunday. But he said, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you can, it's not like he's not going to fight
- 4:01Speaker 1: to be out there knowing JLX. And JLX is the
- 4:04Speaker 1: same guy who refused the cart. So he's a tough guy.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And I listened to his interview on WIP and he
- 4:11Speaker 1: credited his flexibility, having really flexible joints. And he thinks
- 4:15Speaker 1: that that really helped save him there. And he mentioned
- 4:18Speaker 1: that that's been sort of a common theme wherever he's gone,
- 4:21Speaker 1: combine visits and things like that.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And, that probably did help him quite a bit because
- 4:27Speaker 2: that looked like.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It could have been a pretty significant injury and he
- 4:33Speaker 1: avoided that. So we'll see what happens. And again, I
- 4:37Speaker 1: mentioned this in my writeup on the injury report, but
- 4:42Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard being limited with the ankle, you need them
- 4:46Speaker 1: out there. Needless to say without a JLX hunt potentially,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but again, you might need to have another edge rusher
- 4:52Speaker 1: in the event that Grenard is one on a pitch
- 4:54Speaker 1: count or re-aggravates the ankle injury during the game. It's
- 4:57Speaker 1: really hard to go into a game with only three
- 5:00Speaker 1: edge rushers. And I know traditionally Vic has never shied
- 5:04Speaker 1: away from going with a three-player rotation, but when you
- 5:07Speaker 1: factor in Evocati and Epinesa being core special teamers right
- 5:11Speaker 1: now because they're light on numbers, and Trotter Jr.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Is going to be taking on a more elevated role
- 5:16Speaker 2: on defense.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It complicates things a little bit, which is why I
- 5:21Speaker 1: will be keeping an eye on, I'm not saying he
- 5:23Speaker 1: will be elevated, but I'm keeping an eye on Keyshawn
- 5:26Speaker 1: James Newby, depending on what the outlook looks like as
- 5:30Speaker 1: the week gets.
- 5:30Speaker 2: A little bit further along.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And then Will Shipley, not practicing with the foot, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: the report out there was that he had a partial
- 5:39Speaker 1: tear of his plantar fascia. So he'll be out a
- 5:43Speaker 1: little bit, a couple weeks, maybe a few weeks, we'll see.
- 5:47Speaker 1: no firm timetable there, but that's an injury that's going
- 5:50Speaker 1: to take a little bit of time.
- 5:51Speaker 2: They did not place him on injury reserve either.
- 5:53Speaker 1: By the way. Tough break for Will to go out there,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and you have your opportunity to go out there and
- 5:59Speaker 1: start the game in London. You score your first regular
- 6:02Speaker 1: season touchdown, and then you have to leave early with
- 6:05Speaker 1: the foot injury, and it didn't just affect the backfield.
- 6:09Speaker 1: He's the personal protector on punt, and for example, Will...
- 6:14Speaker 1: wasn't able to do that. But then Marcus Epps, I believe,
- 6:18Speaker 1: is the backup personal protector, and he didn't play. So instead,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you had Cole Payton, the Eagles' third-string quarterback, repping as
- 6:27Speaker 1: a personal protector. So Will does a lot of things
- 6:30Speaker 1: for the Eagles, and some of it doesn't show up
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the box score, but that's just one example. And
- 6:38Speaker 1: depending on what happens with Saquon, the running back situation
- 6:41Speaker 1: this week, could look like Damian Pierce, Carson Steele, and
- 6:46Speaker 1: Jaden Blue. And that could be your backfield this week.
- 6:50Speaker 1: So that's something that I will be keeping an eye on.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Of course, Saquon Barkley and Devontae Smith's health this week.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Drew Kendall with the knee did not practice again. Remember,
- 7:00Speaker 1: he missed all of last week with the knee injury.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And he was in the medical tent briefly in the
- 7:05Speaker 1: Rams game, came back, finished the game, but.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it doesn't seem likely that he's going
- 7:12Speaker 1: to be able to go this week. Now, I don't
- 7:14Speaker 1: know what that means for this offensive line configuration, because
- 7:18Speaker 1: we'll get to a couple of players whose practice window
- 7:20Speaker 1: they opened, and that could change the complexion of that
- 7:24Speaker 1: line in terms of how they go about forming it
- 7:29Speaker 1: this week. But Jake Majors filled in last week, and...
- 7:33Speaker 1: We'll see if they go for continuity for the second
- 7:36Speaker 1: week as they try to build some cohesiveness there. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: it doesn't seem likely that Drew will be able to
- 7:43Speaker 1: give it a go this week. But we'll see what
- 7:45Speaker 1: Thursday holds. I'll have a better idea of where things
- 7:48Speaker 1: stand coming off Thursday's practice.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So that's a key one right there.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And then Devontae that we mentioned, I talked about and
- 7:58Speaker 1: He was out there, unlike Saquon. I saw him out there,
- 8:02Speaker 1: but he was on a far field working on the
- 8:03Speaker 1: jugs machine. Last week I posted a video on X
- 8:06Speaker 1: where he was doing some light jogging on a side field.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So he's out there, he's active, and we'll see. But
- 8:15Speaker 1: I don't know that you want to rush these things
- 8:17Speaker 1: with the hamstrings. because they are fickle and they tend
- 8:21Speaker 1: to flare up. And the last thing you want is
- 8:23Speaker 1: to reset the clock and all of a sudden you're
- 8:26Speaker 1: looking at a much longer timetable.
- 8:28Speaker 2: The goal is to try to.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Nurture the injury and take all the proper precautions so
- 8:36Speaker 1: that you can get over this thing because they.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Do tend to linger.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And for that position in particular, someone who can really
- 8:42Speaker 1: open things up down the field as a receiver and
- 8:45Speaker 1: needs the explosiveness to.
- 8:47Speaker 2: In terms of route running and all that, yeah, you
- 8:49Speaker 2: don't want to fool with that. So we'll see. This
- 8:52Speaker 2: is the first day of the week, and that's where
- 8:54Speaker 2: things stand there.

- 11:12Speaker 1: The Eagles opened up the practice window for some key
- 11:17Speaker 1: players here, and that would be defensive back Ja'Cory and Bennett,
- 11:22Speaker 1: tight end Grant Calcaterra, guard Landon Dickerson, and tight end
- 11:25Speaker 1: Eli Stowers. They also signed defensive back Dean Clark to
- 11:28Speaker 1: the practice squad. Okay, so let's break this down. Ja'Corian
- 11:33Speaker 1: Bennett is someone who can play outside corner for you.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He might even be able to help you on special teams.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I don't know that he had a particularly strong training camp,
- 11:43Speaker 1: but he does.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Have a lot of NFL experience.
- 11:45Speaker 1: He now has more experience in the Vic Fangio defense.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And this doesn't mean, just because their practice windows are open,
- 11:52Speaker 1: by the way, they have 21 days to make a
- 11:55Speaker 1: decision or shut them down for the season. Doesn't mean
- 11:58Speaker 1: they're all of a sudden going to be active this week,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but they're getting back on the practice field, which is
- 12:02Speaker 1: an encouraging sign. And last week, when it comes to
- 12:05Speaker 1: Grant Calcaterra, I saw him working on a field with
- 12:08Speaker 1: a trainer, and it seemed like he was really moving.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He was moving around, doing some pivoting and running routes.
- 12:14Speaker 1: So that's a good thing. You've got to get back
- 12:17Speaker 1: out there first and see how things go.
- 12:20Speaker 2: But we'll talk about Grant Calcaterra because that's a player
- 12:25Speaker 2: that the Eagles sorely need.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And the tight end room, they haven't gotten a lot
- 12:30Speaker 1: out of it, right? I mean, Eli Stowers was a
- 12:33Speaker 1: player that they drafted in the second round.
- 12:35Speaker 2: He was behind in training camp.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Wasn't ready for prime time, suffers the quadricep injury that
- 12:41Speaker 1: he had, and I think it was a hamstring as well,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and was put on IR. Maybe you get a chance
- 12:49Speaker 1: to take a step back and see the game through
- 12:52Speaker 1: a different lens. There's maybe not as much pressure coming back,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and we'll see how things go. I'm really interested to
- 13:00Speaker 1: see what this all means for him because he's another
- 13:03Speaker 1: player that the Eagles could use because in theory he
- 13:06Speaker 1: gives you some matchup versatility where you can align him
- 13:10Speaker 1: out wide and do maybe some different things, get creative
- 13:13Speaker 1: in how you're putting him out there. Maybe you're not
- 13:15Speaker 1: putting a whole bunch of pressure and maybe you're not
- 13:17Speaker 1: putting him in high leverage situations, but I would imagine
- 13:20Speaker 1: that there has to be some way that he can
- 13:22Speaker 1: help you. But a player who I think can help
- 13:24Speaker 1: them right away and give them some meaningful snaps is
- 13:29Speaker 1: Grant Calcaterra. Now, I understand he's not a blocker. You
- 13:32Speaker 1: have two other players on the roster who can do that,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and Johnny Muntz and EJ Jenkins. With Grant Calcaterra, he
- 13:42Speaker 1: is a really good receiver. He's a good route runner.
- 13:45Speaker 1: He's smooth in his movements. And I would make the
- 13:48Speaker 1: argument that he has among the best hands on the Eagles.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And I'm saying that based off of what I've seen
- 13:54Speaker 1: for the last few training camps. And he seems to
- 13:56Speaker 1: be someone that Jalen has trust in. He looks for
- 13:59Speaker 1: him over the middle. You kind of know what he is.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But he's a reliable pass catcher, and they certainly need that.
- 14:05Speaker 1: They're not getting a ton out of that position right now.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Zach Ertz, for example, played seven snaps against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Not moving around all that well.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He's 36 years old, coming off a serious knee injury
- 14:17Speaker 1: last December. But you got to find a way to
- 14:21Speaker 1: add a little bit more bounce to that room because
- 14:24Speaker 1: Right now, you're just not getting a ton.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And I think Grant is somebody who the Eagles clearly like.
- 14:29Speaker 2: He knows the offense. He was around in training camp.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And Jalen is familiar with him.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So he's the guy that I'm kind of curious to
- 14:38Speaker 1: keep an eye on this week and see how things
- 14:40Speaker 1: advance for him.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Landon Dickerson.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Landon comes back after being on IR after week one
- 14:48Speaker 1: with the bone bruise on his knee. And... He's another
- 14:52Speaker 1: player that they really need if he's healthy. You don't
- 14:55Speaker 1: want to rush him back either, but you talk about
- 14:59Speaker 1: his mental acuity and the value that he brings at
- 15:04Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, let alone the power and just
- 15:08Speaker 1: the experience that he brings and the experience that he
- 15:13Speaker 1: has working alongside Jordan Mailata, giving him a familiar face
- 15:16Speaker 1: on that offensive line. If you're able to get Landon
- 15:21Speaker 1: Dickerson of last season even. I'm certainly not week one.
- 15:26Speaker 1: That wasn't his standard. That's not what he's shown in
- 15:30Speaker 1: his career. But if you're able to get even Landon
- 15:33Speaker 1: Dickerson of last season to maybe stabilize and solidify the
- 15:36Speaker 1: left side of that offensive line, we'll see what happens
- 15:39Speaker 1: at center this week. It doesn't seem likely, as I mentioned,
- 15:42Speaker 1: that you'll see Drew Kendall. But I guess the Eagles would,
- 15:46Speaker 1: in that case... have a decision to make.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Do you go with Willie.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Lampkin at center, or would you revert back to Jake
- 15:53Speaker 1: Majors and try to establish a little bit more continuity,
- 15:58Speaker 1: giving him another week of working with the ones? I
- 16:01Speaker 1: would think that that would make some sense, but adding
- 16:05Speaker 1: Landon into the mix, and we don't know if he's
- 16:07Speaker 1: going to be available for Sunday. A lot of it's
- 16:11Speaker 1: going to be determined on how this week of practice
- 16:13Speaker 1: goes for him, and if the Eagles feel like He
- 16:16Speaker 1: is fully over and not going to, you know, sometimes
- 16:20Speaker 1: you have to protect the player from themselves.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And if the Eagles feel comfortable.
- 16:23Speaker 1: With him, then I don't see why he wouldn't get
- 16:26Speaker 1: the nod, assuming all things clear in terms.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Of his health and there's no setbacks.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So, yeah, a lot going on, a lot of movement
- 16:35Speaker 1: there on the roster, a lot of things potentially altering,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you know, some of these roster spots. And we already
- 16:45Speaker 1: know that they're going to need three running backs for
- 16:47Speaker 1: this week. You already have Damian Pierce and Carson Steele
- 16:50Speaker 1: on there. You're going to have to find a way
- 16:52Speaker 1: to get Jaden Blue, assuming Saquon Barkley doesn't play, whether
- 16:55Speaker 1: that's an elevation or an outright signing. I would think
- 16:59Speaker 1: an elevation would be the move there.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Zach Ertz is out of elevations. What do you do
- 17:04Speaker 2: with him?
- 17:06Speaker 1: You could leave him on the practice squad this week
- 17:08Speaker 1: and kick the can down the road a little bit,
- 17:10Speaker 1: or you can outright sign him, but you're getting a
- 17:12Speaker 1: little crowded at the tight end position because Grant Calcaterra
- 17:16Speaker 1: and Stowers had their practice window opened. What does that
- 17:19Speaker 1: mean for a veteran like Johnny Munt, who isn't subject
- 17:21Speaker 1: to waivers? Could you get him on the practice squad?
- 17:24Speaker 1: There are so many pieces to the puzzle here that
- 17:26Speaker 1: I'm fascinated to see how the Eagles go about playing this,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and again, It's a running clock that they've opened up
- 17:34Speaker 1: these windows, but it's not something that you have to
- 17:37Speaker 1: make a decision by Sunday or anything like that.
- 17:40Speaker 2: So they have a little bit of.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Time to play with, but these are all things that
- 17:44Speaker 1: I consider as someone who covers the team. These things
- 17:47Speaker 1: keep me up longer at night than they probably should
- 17:50Speaker 1: as I try to think, how would I play it?
- 17:53Speaker 2: How might the Eagles play it?
- 17:54Speaker 3: Everything in life comes down to choice, doesn't it? Whether
- 17:57Speaker 3: it's choosing the team you root for, who you listen to,
- 18:00Speaker 3: or how you power your home, you deserve the freedom
- 18:03Speaker 3: to choose your own adventure, and that goes for your
- 18:05Speaker 3: power bill too. Right now across the U.S., Americans have
