- 0:19Happy Thursday and thank you for tuning in to
- 0:23the Living Free podcast. I am still fighting
- 0:27a cold. So I just want to say one thank you for
- 0:31listening to part one of the fruits of the spirit
- 0:33and now coming back for part two and i'm sorry
- 0:36if i sound discombobulated because when you're
- 0:39sick your brain's just not fully there and best
- 0:42believe my brain was just not fully there when
- 0:44i record so there's long pauses i definitely
- 0:48had to write a little bit of a script to read
- 0:50from because i could not collect my thoughts
- 0:53properly it was driving me nuts um And just like
- 0:57I said earlier, I'm still a little bit sick so
- 0:59I don't know if I've already said this but this
- 1:01is pre -recorded. This update is going to be
- 1:05pre -recorded because usually I do it on Wednesdays
- 1:08and obviously the episodes come out on Thursdays.
- 1:11But I will be on a plane headed to Miami slash
- 1:16Fort Lauderdale to see my bestie! So excited!
- 1:18So that's my update y 'all! I'm headed to Miami,
- 1:21Miami, amy, amy for some sunshine and warmth
- 1:25and I'll possibly pack a swimsuit and I cannot
- 1:28wait, cannot wait to be there with her. I haven't
- 1:31seen Serena since April. Oh my gosh, so freaking
- 1:34pumped. And I'm gonna see hopefully my brother's
- 1:39best friend because she lives really close to
- 1:41Serena and we're supposed to get dinner or something
- 1:42which will be awesome. Cannot wait to see Maddie.
- 1:45I didn't get to see Maddie when she was home
- 1:47for the holidays so I'm pumped to see her. my
- 1:50own trip down there and see where she lives and
- 1:52see her life too her and Serena both live in
- 1:54the same town and they're both doing life and
- 1:56I Can't wait to see what life looks like for
- 1:58them What I've been up to is I had a little I
- 2:04think I told y 'all like one of my goals is to
- 2:06host a themed dinner party once a month and I
- 2:08did my first one for January The theme was rest
- 2:12renew restore. So we did a giant salad dinner
- 2:15rolls green juice immunity shots Seltzer waters
- 2:20the clean healthy if it can be soda. Um, no dessert
- 2:25sadly But then we did face mask and I just don't
- 2:29realize how long this face mask had to sit On
- 2:33your skin for you have to wait till they're like
- 2:35translucent y 'all. That's a long time. It was
- 2:38ours We were all sitting there for hours like
- 2:41till 1030 at night. It was crazy And my bedtime,
- 2:44as everybody knows, is 9, 930. So 1030 was wiling
- 2:48out. And yet I still got up to go to the gym
- 2:53because what's my other goal? To wake up around
- 2:566 a .m. every single day to go to the gym. And
- 2:58best believe that's what your girl did. OK, what
- 3:03is in? What is in is Miami, travel, sunshine,
- 3:07warmth, because we were told in North Carolina
- 3:10we are going to get hit with an ice storm. Wilmington
- 3:13obviously did not get hit because we're so far
- 3:15south, but it is freezing. Freezing. Like, I'm
- 3:18inside my apartment and my hands are cold right
- 3:20now. So yeah. What is... We... Yeah. So that's
- 3:26what's in. And honestly, that's what's out. Cold
- 3:29weather. I'm not here for it. Not cute. Not loving
- 3:31it. I said that last time. I'm saying it again.
- 3:34I also fully believe that that's why I still
- 3:36have a little bit of a cold is this cold freaking
- 3:38weather. Truly, I believe it. Um, anything else?
- 3:43No, that's all I have. I wish I had more info
- 3:46for you guys, but I got nothing. Also, I have
- 3:50not been to church in two weeks. I miss church.
- 3:53I'm kind of sad. Last week I took off because
- 3:55I was still really sick, and honestly, every
- 3:58once in a while I need a slow Sunday morning.
- 4:01Picture this, because it's Sunday morning now
- 4:02and this is what I did today. You wake up. You
- 4:05make your espresso that turns into a hot latte.
- 4:08on a day that is like 24 degrees outside. I actually
- 4:12don't know if it's 24 degrees outside because
- 4:14I refuse to check the weather, but I just know
- 4:15it's cold. So we're going to say it's 24 degrees
- 4:17outside. And after you're done making your latte,
- 4:20that kind of turns into a cappuccino because
- 4:22the foam got too foamy or throwfy or whatever
- 4:25by the steam. You sit down and you open your
- 4:28Bible. you read many chapters of Isaiah because
- 4:32you're trying to get through Isaiah and transfer
- 4:33notes over from one Bible to the next and it's
- 4:36very peaceful it's very quiet until a cat starts
- 4:38to meow at you aggressively to go outside and
- 4:40you try to have a logical conversation to let
- 4:43him know that he can't go outside because it's
- 4:45freezing and he'll probably die even though he
- 4:47won't so you put him in his room again after
- 4:50you finish reading Isaiah you go and you open
- 4:52up a sermon and you're studying Revelation and
- 4:55you get to get through two whole sermons of studying
- 4:57Revelation and then you sit quietly and you journal
- 5:00and you talk to God. And before you know it,
- 5:03it's 12 o 'clock. And that is what my slow Sunday
- 5:06morning looks like. And I love it. I live for
- 5:08it. So every once in a while, I skip church and
- 5:10I do a slow Sunday morning. This week, I'm still
- 5:14at the end of my cold. I definitely could have
- 5:16gone to church. I probably could have served,
- 5:18but I was unsure about this ice storm and I'm
- 5:22not fighting the cold. Ain't I ain't doing it.
- 5:24I'm not fighting the cold I'm not dealing with
- 5:25the cold if I have the choice to wake up at 7
- 5:28a .m Get ready to go to church go to the team
- 5:30meeting. That's like an hour long There feels
- 5:33like an hour long and then stand out in the cold
- 5:35to greet people Or I have the choice to snuggle
- 5:38in my bed until 8 45 And then get up and make
- 5:42my coffee and do everything. I just told y 'all.
- 5:44I'm gonna take the second choice I like my quiet
- 5:48time with Jesus. I am also really missing church
- 5:50but I have a worship session I'm going to on
- 5:55Friday night with Serena when I'm in Miami. So
- 5:57who cares? I mean, I care. But you know what
- 6:01I'm saying. I'm just processing it loud now.
- 6:04I'm just thinking out loud. Anyways, let's dive
- 6:08into this week's episode. So you decide to come
- 6:16back for part two. I love it. Thank you so much
- 6:19for joining me for part two of the fruits of
- 6:23the spirit just a little refresh for um on those
- 6:28fruits in case you need it those fruits are love
- 6:32joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness
- 6:36gentleness and self -control today we're picking
- 6:40up um or we're coming back when we're going to
- 6:44start with kindness Ugh, such a good one. I mean,
- 6:48we need a lot more of that in the world right
- 6:51now. I know, that makes me sound like a hippie
- 6:54or something, but it's so true. I feel like we're
- 6:56just anger is on the rise and kindness is far,
- 6:59far, far away. So, let's talk about kindness.
- 7:04Kindness is a core command. It's essential to
- 7:08believers. It's a path to influence and to demonstrate
- 7:12Jesus' love. Kindness isn't passive, it's an
- 7:15action. And it's part of God's character. It's
- 7:18going beyond niceties. It's you being helpful,
- 7:22giving grace, and could be even the action of
- 7:26generous, either with your time, money, or words.
- 7:30Colossians 3 12 says, Put on therefore, as the
- 7:34elect of God, holy and beloved, vows of mercy,
- 7:37kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, and long
- 7:40-suffering. Put on is an action, as we all know,
- 7:44because we put on clothes every day. Some of
- 7:46us have to jump to put our pants on. To put on
- 7:49kindness is an awareness that we have to be present
- 7:53to. Listen, I know y 'all. Being called to love
- 8:14your enemy, especially as a girl who jokes about
- 8:16having nemesis in her life, is not a fun calling.
- 8:21Loving doesn't mean fake nice though. You don't
- 8:24have to be fake kind to people because Jesus
- 8:27quickly follows with what loving your enemies
- 8:30or showing kindness to your enemies should look
- 8:33like. It's doing good, helping out, expecting
- 8:36nothing in return from them. Just do it out of
- 8:39the kindness of your heart. Ephesians 4 32 says,
- 8:43Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving
- 8:45one another as God and Christ forgave you. You
- 8:49don't really need me to break that one down for
- 8:51you, right? Finally, let's end the topic of kindness
- 8:56on this note with Galatians 6 10. So then, as
- 9:01we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone,
- 9:04especially to those who are in the household
- 9:07of faith. Notice how it says everyone before
- 9:10it says those in the household, or rather the
- 9:13family in the faith. Everyone as in everyone
- 9:17baby. Not just your uncle you don't like, not
- 9:20just your bestie or the know -it -all in your
- 9:22small group, but also the immigrant, the thief,
- 9:25the mean old lady down the street. Everyone means
- 9:29everyone. But then he says especially those in
- 9:34our family of faith. Okay, next up is goodness.
- 9:40First off, God is good all the time. And all
- 9:43the time, say it with me. God is good. God is
- 9:48the creator of good. And remember how in part
- 9:51one I said we can't know good without bad? We
- 9:54can't know God's goodness without being aware
- 9:56of how bad the world is. James 1, 17 says, every
- 10:00good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
- 10:04coming down from the father of lights. In Ephesians
- 10:072, 10 says, For we are his workmanship, created
- 10:11in Christ for good works, which God prepared
- 10:14beforehand that we should walk in them. God creates
- 10:17every good thing. He creates every good gift
- 10:20and allows us to partake in those gifts and those
- 10:23good works. Biblical, or rather spiritual goodness,
- 10:27is rooted in love and integrity. It's putting
- 10:30aside personal opinion and deliberately choosing
- 10:33right over wrong. It's doing justice, seeking
- 10:36kindness, and walking humbly. As we would say
- 10:40in the Christian lingo, Romans 12 9 says, let
- 10:44love be genuine, harbor what is evil, hold fast
- 10:47to what is good. Hold fast to what is good. That
- 10:51means to embrace, to cling to, and once again
- 10:55actively practice what is truth and morally correct.
- 10:59Romans 12 21 says, do not be overcome by evil,
- 11:03but overcome evil with good. This verse calls
- 11:06us to not be overwhelmed or surrender to negative
- 11:09thoughts, hatred, or harmful actions, but to
- 11:13overcome, to defeat, to overwhelm it with goodness.
- 11:17And 1 Corinthians 15 -33 says, Do not be deceived,
- 11:22bad company ruins good morals. Who you listen
- 11:25to, who you keep company with, will influence
- 11:28our morals. It's important to have discernment
- 11:30and if what you listen to or what you are around
- 11:34do not keep good morals by the Bibles aka Jesus'
- 11:38standard, get out. Now, I'm not saying don't
- 11:42be friends with non -believers. Some of my closest
- 11:44friends are non -believers, but do they have
- 11:46good morals? That is my question. Some of my
- 11:50Christian friends do not have good morals. and
- 11:53I've talked about this in the dating world. I
- 11:56know more non -Christian guys that have amazing
- 11:58character and really good morals than I do Christian
- 12:01guys that do. Some of the Christian guys I know,
- 12:04some of the worst people I know. And that's a
- 12:06terrible thing to say, but that's the reality
- 12:08we live in. So I'm not looking for, do they know
- 12:11Jesus? We're looking for, are their morals good?
- 12:14Do they know right from wrong? Okay, now that
- 12:17I'm pretty sure I'm done being dramatic, let's
- 12:19talk about the word faithfulness. When I think
- 12:24of the word faithfulness, I think about God's
- 12:26steadfast love. About a year or two ago, I went
- 12:29through a phase where every time I read the word
- 12:31steadfast, I highlighted it, and then marked
- 12:34the address for it in the back of my Bible. Every
- 12:37time I saw the word steadfast, the word love
- 12:39was in the same sentence. But what does it have
- 12:42to do with the word faithfulness? Well, faithfulness
- 12:46is a core virtue of God. With this word comes
- 12:49steadfast loyalty, trustworthiness, and a dependable
- 12:52commitment. Because God is faithful, we can trust
- 12:56Him. It feeds into His unwavering covenant of
- 12:59love and mercy. Faithfulness is a developing
- 13:01characteristic. That means it isn't just there,
- 13:04and better than ever, we have to grow in it and
- 13:07practice it. It won't come easy to us. There's
- 13:10a Bible verse that says, he who is faithful in
- 13:13little will be faithful in much. Best believe,
- 13:15every time I was to do just one tiny, weeny,
- 13:19small, little, un -Christ -like thing, like um,
- 13:23I don't know, cuss someone out, I don't know
- 13:25why that's always been like the first thing that
- 13:27comes to my mind. I really don't cuss people,
- 13:29well I do in my head, I cuss people out in my
- 13:31head. but not out loud. I've never cussed somebody
- 13:34out out loud, but that just keeps being my first
- 13:36analogy. Look, cussing just adds a little spice
- 13:39to my vocabulary. I know. I know. My mom always
- 13:42said people who cuss, it just means that their
- 13:44vocabulary is not large enough. My vocabulary
- 13:47is very large. I just choose to use some spicy
- 13:51words in it because it fits my spicy personality.
- 13:54um anyways so it could be me cussing someone
- 13:57out or it could be going the wrong way on a roundabout
- 14:01because it's midnight and you know no one else
- 14:04is around but then i have that little voice in
- 14:06the back of my head that says that exact first
- 14:09to me and then i don't i don't do it because
- 14:11i want to be faithful in big things but if i
- 14:14don't have practice with the small things then
- 14:16how can i handle the big ones i feel like faithfulness
- 14:19and patience go hand in hand no i was faithful
- 14:23to build the ark. Jesus was faithful. Period.
- 14:27Point blank. Basically, anyone on the list from
- 14:30Patience Part 1 was faithful. Proverbs 20 verse
- 14:356 says, Many a man proclaims his own steadfast
- 14:39love, but a faithful man who can find. That's
- 14:43basically telling us that our actions speak for
- 14:46themselves. Those actions could be being in God's
- 14:49Word. praying, being consistent with daily duties,
- 14:52or the small things in life. Hebrew 11 actually
- 14:55gives a very long list of those in the Bible
- 14:57that were faithful. If you have time, I 10 out
- 15:01of 10 recommend you go read it. And you keeping
- 15:21God's commandment could cause a ripple effect
- 15:23like we've seen in the genealogy of Jesus. But
- 15:26what does it mean practically to be faithful,
- 15:29as in fruit being produced? It's us having integrity,
- 15:32being reliable. It's being obedient in action
- 15:35if you believe God has called you to do something
- 15:38like me in this podcast or when I moved to SoCal.
- 15:41It's us being a trustworthy friend or being in
- 15:45worship of God in company or alone. Alrighty,
- 15:50gentleness is our next word to conquer. Biblically
- 15:53and once again, spiritually speaking, gentleness
- 15:56is defined as strength controlled. Jesus was
- 16:00strong while on this earth. He was a carpenter.
- 16:02He used his hands. He used his muscles. He was
- 16:06strong and he helped those men fish. Like, he
- 16:08was strong. Plus, he was the creator of the universe,
- 16:12all knowing. Etc, etc, etc. But Jesus was also
- 16:17gentle. Gentle with women, gentle with children,
- 16:20gentle with cripples, gentle with the tax collectors.
- 16:23You get the point. And honestly, he's gentle
- 16:26with you and me now. I never feel forced by him
- 16:30to do something. He meets me where I am and leads
- 16:32me to where I need to go next, just like the
- 16:35Good Shepherd. He is gentle with my emotions
- 16:37and with my spiritual growth. Gentleness is a
- 16:40humble, tender disposition, not a weakness. It
- 16:43can be seen in the practice of patience, or through
- 16:46compassionate actions, and is kind. In Colossians,
- 16:50we see that we are called to put on gentleness,
- 16:53which, again, is an action, something we have
- 16:56to be present and aware of. Proverbs 15 .1 says,
- 17:00a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word
- 17:03stirs up anger. In Titus, 3 verse 2 says to speak
- 17:07evil to no one. to avoid quarreling, to be gentle,
- 17:11and to show perfect courtesy towards all people.
- 17:15Once again, everyone. In a world that loves to
- 17:18be angry because anger sells, this verse tells
- 17:21us to have soft words because it can change that
- 17:24anger. Now, we see lately that this isn't always
- 17:27true by the world standard, but we are called
- 17:30to be faithful. And with soft words, we can be
- 17:33faithful in something small and gentle. James
- 17:373 .17 says, But the wisdom from above is first
- 17:41pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason,
- 17:45full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
- 17:50Wisdom is seen as gentle in this verse. And girl,
- 17:53I don't know about you, but I want to be wise.
- 17:59But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy,
- 18:02always being prepared to make a defense to anyone
- 18:05who asks you for a reason for the hope that is
- 18:08in you. Yet do it with gentleness and respect.
- 18:11This verse shows us the strength is the force
- 18:14behind gentleness. That you can defend. You don't
- 18:18have to be a pushover or a doormat because I
- 18:21don't want that for you. that you can make reason
- 18:24but to be wise with your words in the process
- 18:27of doing so. Jesus was strong and gentle, as
- 18:30we talked about, and so was Moses as he led the
- 18:34Israelites out of Egypt and guided them through
- 18:36the wilderness. We also have Ruth and Boaz as
- 18:40a prime example of wisdom, strength going hand
- 18:43in hand with gentleness. Alright, last and definitely
- 18:47not least, we have self -control. This is a vital
- 18:53virtue. Self -control provides power over fear
- 18:56and temptation. It helps us not act on emotion,
- 19:01impulses, or desires that don't serve us or others.
- 19:06It allows us to practice self -discipline. It
- 19:09is a sign of wisdom. And I think that it could
- 19:12be seen as another trunk or root of the tree.
- 19:15It's a muscle we have to work out to get strong
- 19:18and disciplined in. Self -control can help us
- 19:21speak gently with one another. Do things out
- 19:25of love, practice patience, or faithfulness.
- 19:30Okay, okay. You get the point. Basically, any
- 19:33of the fruits of the spirit can be tied to one
- 19:35another, but definitely self -control, just like
- 19:38love. Proverbs 25 -28 says, A man without self
- 19:42-control is like a city broken into and left
- 19:45without walls. A city without walls is defenseless.
- 19:48If we don't practice, we will not be able to
- 19:50stand against the things that come our way. I
- 19:53had a friend that was counseling addicts once.
- 19:55She told me she had taught at a girls' night
- 19:58at church. And as they talked about her experience
- 20:00counseling addicts, the girls asked her if she
- 20:03had ever been addicted to drugs based on the
- 20:05conversation they had been having. She said,
- 20:07no, I haven't. Then they asked, how could she
- 20:10help others if she doesn't know what they're
- 20:12experiencing? She said because she had said no
- 20:14to the small things, it was easier to keep saying
- 20:17no to the big things. Because she started with
- 20:20a no, and not a maybe, it was easier to just
- 20:23keep saying no. Self -control can be for many
- 20:27different things. For one, it might be porn or
- 20:30sex. For some, it could be drinking. For another,
- 20:33it could be food. Or another, it could be working
- 20:36out. For one, it might be social media or another
- 20:39shopping trip. Or maybe their attitude. For me,
- 20:44probably definitely my attitude. I have to have
- 20:46self -control at that all the time. Yeah, I do.
- 20:49Anyways. We're not talking about me. We're talking
- 20:52about Prince of the spirits guys not my attitude,
- 20:55especially if I'm with my brothers That definitely
- 20:58does not exist. It definitely doesn't with my
- 21:00sister though. She scares me So she does not
- 21:03get an attitude I be behaving around her. Okay,
- 21:07um James 1 19 and 20 says know this my beloved
- 21:12brothers Let every person be quick to hear slow
- 21:15to speak slow to anger for the anger of man does
- 21:18not produce the righteousness of God Not everything
- 21:21we hear or read needs a response. Watch what
- 21:25you say. My mom always told me I have two ears
- 21:29and one mouth. Do twice as much listening as
- 21:31I do talking. Don't respond to people in anger.
- 21:35Don't feel what you have to say is more important.
- 21:37Don't be in a rush to get your words out. Practice
- 21:40self -control with your words. Second Timothy
- 21:44versus one, I mean, Chapter 1 verse 7 says, for
- 21:48God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power
- 21:52and love and self -control. I love this! God
- 21:57did not give us a spirit of fear or anger or
- 22:00lust or contempt, but a spirit of love and what?
- 22:04What was that? Self -control. Let's talk about
- 22:08ways to practice self -control. Fasting, guarding
- 22:12your speech, as I mentioned earlier, practicing
- 22:16thankfulness, actively avoiding things that could
- 22:18be an unhealthy temptation for you. I would love
- 22:21to do another list. Let's do a list of examples
- 22:24from people in the Bible that did have self -control
- 22:28outside of Jesus, of course, because he's our
- 22:31number one. Okay, we have Daniel, you know, by
- 22:35instant didn't want to eat the food because it
- 22:37didn't align with the standards God had given
- 22:39him, yada, yada, yada. Then we have Joseph, who's
- 22:43was a slave and his basically his boss's wife
- 22:47Potiphar's wife wanted to sleep with him and
- 22:49he was like no don't stay away from me xyz and
- 22:54then he also had to practice self -control with
- 22:56his brothers when they came to ask for food and
- 22:59he had to pretend like he didn't know them instead
- 23:01of just putting them all directly into jail because
- 23:03i'd be like straight to jail everyone's going
- 23:06to jail y 'all sold me everyone jail and then
- 23:10we got our girl from the genealogy of jesus that
- 23:12we've talked about Abigail, whose husband, if
- 23:15you remember from the story of David, was not
- 23:18wise with his words when it came to David, and
- 23:21she knew it would bring trouble knocking at her
- 23:24door. And then let's do the list for people without
- 23:28self -control. And that list, we will keep it
- 23:31very short and sweet. Drumroll, please. Ba ba
- 23:34ba ba ba ba ba ba ba. Adam and Eve. Enough said.
- 23:39Well, that's where we will end it with self -control.
- 23:42Okay, so those are our fruits. My question for
- 23:45you is, are you producing those fruits? Do you
- 23:48see them in your life now that they've been broken
- 23:51down and explained? Do you see how you can grow
- 23:53in them or produce maybe some of them a little
- 23:56better? I want to leave you with one final verse,
- 23:59Galatians 5 verse 25. It says, if we live by
- 24:05the spirit, let us also keep in step with the
- 24:07spirit. My version is, If we live by the Holy
- 24:12Spirit, let us produce fruits that keep in step
- 24:14with the Holy Spirit. Or if we live by the Spirit,
- 24:19let us love. Let us have joy. Let us have peace.
- 24:22Let us practice patience. Let us be kind. Let
- 24:25us be good. Let us be faithful or faith -filled.
- 24:28Let us be gentle and let us have self -control
- 24:31that keeps in step with the Holy Spirit. Let's
- 24:35pray. Dear Jesus, help us keep in step with the
- 24:38Holy Spirit. Help us grow and produce those fruits
- 24:41of the Holy Spirit. Have us grow love and joy,
- 24:45peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness,
- 24:49self -control, and any that I might have missed.
- 24:51Because God, those are your representations.
- 24:54That's who we want to be in this world. Let us
- 24:56be a true representation of Christ on this earth.
- 24:58So have us produce those fruits. I ask that where
- 25:01I'm lacking or we're lacking, that you will help
- 25:05us grow in that, that you will show us clearly
- 25:07so that that fruit is clearly produced. Have
- 25:10us keep in step with the Holy Spirit that you
- 25:12have given us. In Jesus name, Amen. Alright,
