- 0:16Jennifer.
- 0:17Cam, it is snowing out again.
- 0:19March the third, and it's snowing.
- 0:21I think spring arrives on March 21st.
- 0:24That seems like a long way away, which means probably between now and then, it could snow a lot.
- 0:29And it's cold.
- 0:30I know, it's supposed to be spring already.
- 0:33It's cold.
- 0:34It's cold.
- 0:34I don't like it.
- 0:35I should refer to the farmer's almanac again.

- 0:40I'm going to.
- 0:40And find out how much longer we gotta put up with this snow.

- 2:54Yes.
- 2:54And Cam.
- 2:55Or has it dropped already?
- 2:56Well, it drops today.
- 2:57Drops today.
- 2:58Although when people are hearing this podcast, it will have already dropped.
- 3:01For two days, it'll have been out.
- 3:02That's right.
- 3:03And it's an awesome segment.
- 3:05It's one of my favorites.
- 3:05I know what it is.
- 3:07It's called...
- 3:08Grape Expectations.
- 3:09Grape Expectations.
- 3:11Yes.
- 3:11Where we do wine tasting and learn all about wine with our favorite, Cam.
- 3:17She is our favorite.
- 3:18She is.
- 3:19And she's amazing.
- 3:20Karen Principe.
- 3:21Karen Principe.
- 3:22She is like a wine sommelier and she is an amazing lady.
- 3:27And like you say, we do a wine tasting segment.
- 3:30She knows her wines.
- 3:30She does know her wines.
- 3:31So once a month...
- 3:33Once a month.
- 3:33We're going to be dropping this segment...
- 3:35Yep...
- 3:35Where Karen will introduce Cam and I to the wonderful world of wine.
- 3:39That's right.
- 3:40And so...
- 3:41W-W-Oh, W-W-W, the wonderful world of wine.
- 3:43What?
- 3:44W-W-W, the wonderful world of wine.
- 3:47I love it.
- 3:48That's good.
- 3:48No, that is really good.
- 3:49We should...
- 3:50Yeah, we should coin that for it.
- 3:51W-W-W, the wonderful world of wine.
- 3:54And hey, that's it.
- 3:55No, it's good.
- 3:55And it's a great segment.
- 3:57Karen knows her stuff.
- 3:58We do a red and a white.
- 3:59Yes.
- 4:00And we have cheese.
- 4:01What we did this time.
- 4:02We had cheese.
- 4:03I really like the cheese.
- 4:04Wine pairs with, but this segment is not pretentious.
- 4:07It's down to earth.
- 4:09It's achievable.
- 4:10That's right.
- 4:10It's affordable.
- 4:11And it's not like, they're not like like $800 bottles of wine.
- 4:14That's why I said affordable.
- 4:15Right.
- 4:16They're like, yes.
- 4:16With an everyday person.
- 4:18That's right.
- 4:18And it's great.
- 4:19And you're going to love it because Karen, she just says it like it is and tells you about the wine, what it pairs with, what it goes with, all that kind of stuff.
- 4:26It's awesome.
- 4:27And we have a lot of fun doing it.
- 4:28We do have a lot of fun.
- 4:29It's great.
- 4:30So dropping in every month.
- 4:32First one dropped a couple of days ago.
- 4:34So it'll be out two days.
- 4:35Check it out.
- 4:36You can wherever you get our podcast or at www.coffeeinthepark.com.
- 4:43That's right.
- 4:44I always. You always say .ca, you almost messed me up. I don't know why.
- 4:47I don't know, but that's why you're here.
- 4:49But you know what?
- 4:50If you're listening to this, go and get the wines Karen recommended and then shoot us a note.

- 4:57Send us a little email.
- 4:59Go to our website, send us a little message and tell us what you think.
- 5:03Because we want to hear from you.
- 5:05And what are your questions?
- 5:07What do you want to know about wine?
- 5:08That's right.
- 5:09And we'll ask Karen.
- 5:09You know, I love our segment.
- 5:10We had the Wing Snob flavor of the month.
- 5:13We did.
- 5:13That was awesome.
- 5:14Mike Chadi did that.
- 5:15And now we've got Grape Expectations with Karen Principe.
- 5:19Love it.
- 5:19And I love it.
- 5:20It's awesome.
- 5:21So yeah, so check it out.
- 5:22And today, well, today's a very special day.
- 5:25We actually today, we don't have a guest.
- 5:28Don't turn us off.
- 5:28Don't turn us off because this is like Pet Peeves number three.
- 5:34It is, but it is very targeted.
- 5:36Very specific today.
- 5:38And you and I have been talking about this topic for a very long time.
- 5:41We have.
- 5:42But Cam, there's a lot going on in the world right now.
- 5:46There is, isn't there?
- 5:48You know what?
- 5:48It's hard to turn on the news because it's not good news.
- 5:51So remember when I coined my word of the year, levity?
- 5:55Levity.
- 5:55Today, we hope to bring you a little levity.
- 5:58A little levity today.
- 5:59I feel like we should have music.
- 6:02Levity.
- 6:02I know.
- 6:03That's a great word.
- 6:04Levity.
- 6:04It is.
- 6:05And so today, you're right.
- 6:06We're going to have a little levity.
- 6:08Yes.
- 6:08And I think today we're going to talk about something that every single person, they're going to agree with us.
- 6:14They're going to say yes.
- 6:16They're going to send us mails and give us their ideas and their thoughts on what we're going to talk about today because every single person goes through this.
- 6:24And is going through this.
- 6:25And is going through this.
- 6:26That's right.
- 6:27For a number of years now, but it's gotten worse.
- 6:29That's right.
- 6:29So today, we want to just talk about, well, how do we say it?
- 6:36How do we broach it? Yeah.
- 6:36Well, we want to talk about the cost.
- 6:39That's right.
- 6:39Of life these days.
- 6:40That's right.
- 6:41So have you noticed?
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:42The cost of life.
- 6:43Have you noticed that everything goes up?
- 6:46Yes.
- 6:46Everything's gone up.
- 6:47Everything's gone up.
- 6:49It doesn't matter what it is.
- 6:50And you don't, it's not like we're saying, well, we're really old.
- 6:53Do you remember the good old days when you could get a cheeseburger for a nickel?
- 6:56That's not what it's about.
- 6:57That's not what it's about.
- 6:59Because I think you could have been born two years ago and say cost still...
- 7:03Oh, absolutely.
- 7:04Not that a two-year-old is going to say cost went up.
- 7:06I can't see a two-year-old saying that.
- 7:08Think back to your life when you were, say, going to the grocery store even five years ago.
- 7:13That's right.
- 7:13Compared to now.
- 7:14Compared to now.
- 7:17I do remember some of the good old days.
- 7:19Believe it or not, I remember when you could get a cheeseburger at McDonald's for 35 cents.
- 7:25See, people would never understand that now.
- 7:27Because now you get a cheeseburger and you're paying, like, For 35 dollars. Right.
- 7:31Well, not quite.
- 7:32But it feels like it.
- 7:33Well, actually, right now, I have to say the fast food places, they actually have some pretty good deals on.
- 7:37Well, I think that's what they're trying to do.
- 7:38Yeah, because they're trying to get people back.
- 7:40But nonetheless, you're never going to get a cheeseburger for 35 cents.
- 7:42Not anymore.
- 7:43And everything's gone up.
- 7:45Everything.
- 7:45Everything has gone up.
- 7:47And the other thing I've noticed, the grocery store, everything's gone up, but everything's gotten smaller.
- 7:53Yes.
- 7:53I think they call it Shrinkflation.
- 7:56Shrinkflation?
- 7:57Yes.
- 7:58I never heard of that.
- 7:59Yes.
- 7:59Is that what it is?
- 8:00That's the term that has been coined.
- 8:01OK, this is what it is.
- 8:03And you and I have been talking about this for a long time, because I see it everywhere.
- 8:07You walk through the grocery store, you go wherever you go.
- 8:10You go to restaurants.
- 8:11It's Shrinkflation.
- 8:12Yes.
- 8:13You pay more and you get less.
- 8:15That's right.
- 8:16Right.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:17OK, so we got some things here, actually.
- 8:20Well, Cam and I went grocery shopping.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:22The other day we did.
- 8:23And we were texting each other about different items.
- 8:27That's right.
- 8:28That have skyrocketed in price, but you are getting far less product for what you're paying for.
- 8:34That's right.
- 8:34Because it's shrunk.
- 8:36How often can you even walk out of the grocery?
- 8:38So this is this is my life.
- 8:41And my husband will attest that I complain to this all the time.
- 8:43Right.
- 8:44I will go grocery shopping.
- 8:45Yes.
- 8:45And I'll come home with maybe two bags.
- 8:48And it's costed me a gazillion dollars.
- 8:49I know.
- 8:50And then I look and say, what did I actually buy?
- 8:52I know.
- 8:53It's like you got to take out a mortgage just to buy groceries.
- 8:56It's unbelievable.
- 8:57I remember the days where I could go grocery shopping, say on a Sunday for the week.
- 9:01Now I still have to go midweek because I know there's less of what I'm buying.
- 9:05I know it's it is unbelievable because, I, you're getting less for far.
- 9:09You pay far more.
- 9:11You're getting less.
- 9:12It doesn't last as long.
- 9:13So you're right.
- 9:14The once a week grocery shopping is not once a week anymore.
- 9:17I agree.
- 9:18It's like two, three times a week sometimes.
- 9:20And then I go to stores like Costco.
- 9:23Well, and there you go.
- 9:25I mean, again, but it's just you seem to be paying more and getting.
- 9:30We got some things sitting here.
- 9:32And so where do you want to start?
- 9:33What do you want to start with?
- 9:35Let's start with my cheese pleasers.
- 9:37These are my cheese pleasers.
- 9:38I love cheese pleasers.
- 9:40Cheese pleasers used to be really big.
- 9:42I haven't opened these yet, but I'm looking through the plastic and they're gotten much smaller.
- 9:48Like the bag or the actual puffs?
- 9:51Well, the puffs themselves are smaller than they were.
- 9:54I think the bag is even a little bit smaller, but they used to be really big and have a big curl in them, and now they don't even have that anymore.
- 10:00What did you pay for those?
- 10:02Where's my bill?
- 10:02Oh yeah, you have your bill.
- 10:04Hang on.
- 10:05I do have my bill here.
- 10:06This is the question.
- 10:07My bill is somewhere.
- 10:08Where's my bill?
- 10:09What did I do?
- 10:10Is my bill over there somewhere?
- 10:12No, but we'll find it.
- 10:12We'll find it.
- 10:13I think I paid like $4 or $5 for that bag of cheese pleasers.
- 10:18I know.
- 10:18I can remember when I could buy those for like...
- 10:20Oh, your bill is beside you.
- 10:21Oh, there it is.
- 10:23Okay.
- 10:23My cheese pleasers, I paid.
- 10:25I paid $5.79.
- 10:29That's ridiculous.
- 10:31And that's with a loyalty card.
- 10:33$5.79 for a bag of cheese pleasers.
- 10:38I mean, I'm telling you right now, when I eat those, I got to eat them very slowly.
- 10:41They got to last.
- 10:42Well, you better enjoy them.
- 10:43Well, I know.
- 10:45I honestly didn't pay attention yesterday.
- 10:49$5.79 for a bag of cheese.
- 10:51I can remember when you could buy, they were on sale for like $1.50.
- 10:55Same size bag with bigger cheese pleasers.
- 10:57Okay.
- 10:57I'm going to pull over my chocolate chips.
- 11:01Oh yes.
- 11:02This here.
- 11:03These are the, yes.
- 11:04So these are chocolate chips that I purchased from the grocery store.
- 11:08And Cam can attest to this.
- 11:10It looks like a very large bag.
- 11:12It's unbelievable.
- 11:13I'm holding the bag and I don't even know if I could get a cup and a half out of these.
- 11:17You know what?
- 11:18I don't think you would get a cup and a half out of that.
- 11:20How much did you pay for that bag?
- 11:21Well, so I got an off brand.
- 11:24That's right.
- 11:24To compare.
- 11:25Yeah.
- 11:26So if I was buying the name brand, yeah.
- 11:28It's close to $8 for a bag of chocolate chips.
- 11:31I remember buying chocolate chips for $3.
- 11:34$8! So if you're trying to bake something.
- 11:37If you bake chocolate chip cookies and put those in the cookies, you'd get like four chocolate chips per cookie.
- 11:44I know.
- 11:44And the cookie would be like $8 per cookie by the time.
- 11:48This is why when you go out to eat everywhere, it's costing a fortune.
- 11:51Unbelievable.
- 11:52I can't.
- 11:53Folks, you should, I think we're going to do a video a little bit later and you should see this.
- 11:57I mean, there is just, it's unbelievable.
- 11:59A bag is like half empty.
- 12:01Do you know, okay, this is going to be off topic, but I'm going to talk about it.
- 12:06Have you noticed, especially on all my favorite foods, because I like a lot of junk food, the little warning labels now?
- 12:12Yeah.
- 12:13What does that say?
- 12:15This one says, high in saturated fat, and that's put out by Health Canada.
- 12:20They're telling you that it is high.
- 12:26But have you not noticed this is a new thing on a bunch of products that you get?
- 12:31It is.
- 12:31It's all on there.
- 12:32I don't know if, let me check.
- 12:33I don't know if the Cheese Pleasers has it anywhere.
- 12:36It should.
- 12:36It doesn't.
- 12:37It should.
- 12:39But let's talk about it.
- 12:41And then they put all the nutritional things on the back.
- 12:44So the nutritional facts for your chocolate chips are per one tablespoon.
- 12:49Is that tablespoon or teaspoon?
- 12:51Hey, wait.
- 12:51Tablespoon.
- 12:52Tablespoon.
- 12:55For one tablespoon of chocolate chips.
- 12:58That'd be like four chocolate chips, 80 calories.
- 13:02It does have one gram of fiber.
- 13:06Well, you're getting your fiber in.
- 13:07It's got seven grams of sugar.
- 13:09Oh my goodness.
- 13:10And it's got six percent fat in it.
- 13:13Per one tablespoon.
- 13:16Well just think, I make my chocolate chip cookies with a cup.
- 13:21I might need to rethink some of my life habits here.
- 13:22That's why they put this warning on here.
- 13:25High.
- 13:25This is the, no, it's not.
- 13:28Is there nothing on the cheese puffs?
- 13:29No, but can I tell you the nutritional value of the cheese puff?
- 13:33If you have one or one three quarter cup, three quarter cup of cheese pleasers, cheese pleasers, that gives a brand away if you know what I'm talking about.
- 13:44A three quarter cup has 270 calories and 16 grams of fat.
- 13:51Saturated or monosaturated?
- 13:53Trans fat?
- 13:53Oh, saturated is 1.5 grams, 8 percent.
- 13:58Oh, the trans fats are the bad ones.
- 14:00It's got zero.
- 14:00Okay, then you're okay.
- 14:01It's zero.
- 14:02But it has one gram of fiber and three grams of sugar in it.
- 14:08So I'm just saying, but it's got a lot of potassium and calcium.
- 14:12How?
- 14:12But I'm telling you, there's no warning on these, so I'm feeling better about that.
- 14:16Unlike your chocolate chips over there.
- 14:18I'm a little concerned.
- 14:19But you're right about that.
- 14:20I mean, my goodness, they just...
- 14:22Yeah, it's incredible.
- 14:24So, okay, what else do we have here?
- 14:25Well, my favorite are...
- 14:27Oh, you love salt and vinegar chips.
- 14:29Salt and vinegar.
- 14:30And I am going to give the brand the shout out because to me, this is the best brand.
- 14:33This is the Old Dutch Canadian.
- 14:35Old Dutch Canadian.
- 14:36That's right. Winnipeg.
- 14:37This is by far the best salt and vinegar chip.
- 14:40They are good.
- 14:41Try to prove me wrong.
- 14:42No, you're right about that.
- 14:43I think you're right.
- 14:44They are very good.
- 14:45I know.
- 14:46How do you eat your salt and vinegar chips? Because I...
- 14:49Do you lick the salt and vinegar off?
- 14:51Yes.
- 14:51This is what I'm saying.
- 14:53I eat one at a time. People think it's gross but you have to.
- 14:54But you have to.
- 14:55I don't put a whole bunch in my mouth.
- 14:56No, you don't.
- 14:57I just lick the salt and vinegar off.
- 14:59But then your tongue starts to feel a little wonky after.
- 15:01You have to have like a soda with you or something, a Coke or something like that.
- 15:06However, so this is a 220 gram bag of chips.
- 15:10Yes, and when I squeeze, it's mostly air.
- 15:12It's mostly air.
- 15:13It's a lot of air in there.
- 15:15Yeah, it is. Look at this, it's like half filled.
- 15:16It's a lot of air.
- 15:17You're right.
- 15:17It's a lot of air.
- 15:18And regularly, again, you're almost paying $5.
- 15:21Now, I bought these because they were on sale.
- 15:24Did you have a loyalty card that you scanned?
- 15:27Well I did, I did, yeah.
- 15:28I know that's what you have to do.
- 15:29You got to watch for the bargains in the loyalty scan.
- 15:32But that is the thing with chip.
- 15:33There are some chip brands, I'm going to say, when you buy them and you think this is going to be, I'm so excited, you get home, you open it, and there's like so few chips in there.
- 15:42I know.
- 15:43Old Dutch, I think, is still pretty good.
- 15:45They're still pretty good.
- 15:46And there's two grams of fiber in my salt and vinegar chips.
- 15:49So the salt and vinegar chips are better for you than the cheese pleasers, per fiber.
- 15:54So they say.
- 15:54If you're needing fiber.
- 15:55And you can eat 27 chips.
- 15:57And how much, what's the fat content on that?
- 16:0113 grams.
- 16:0113 grams, okay, for 27 chips?
- 16:0527 chips, but let's be honest, I'm not stopping at 27 chips.
- 16:09Who is, especially if you're sitting there or watching a TV show or a movie or a sporting event.
- 16:13I will eat the entire bag.
- 16:14I know, me too, that's the thing.
- 16:17Here's what I try to do.
- 16:18I get a little bowl and I put a few in a little bowl. But then I go back.
- 16:21I know, see, exactly right.
- 16:24So I'm thinking if I have a little bowl, that's all I'm gonna eat.
- 16:26But then I eat that little bowl and then I just.
- 16:29See, for people learning, wanting to know more about Cam and I, we have a chip weakness.
- 16:33We do.
- 16:34If you go to my snack drawer in my office, there's usually chips in there.
- 16:38Yeah, I tried popcorn, but it's just not like chips.
- 16:42I like popcorn.
- 16:43I do too.
- 16:43But it's not like chips. No.
- 16:44All right, so.
- 16:45Okay, what else did you get?
- 16:46Okay, this is the kicker right here.
- 16:49People are gonna say to us, okay, but try to eat healthy because everything you're talking about is unhealthy.
- 16:56But you know what?
- 16:57Who can afford to eat healthy these days?
- 16:59Let's talk about that.
- 17:00Exactly, to your point.
- 17:01I bought this yesterday.
- 17:02I have the bill to prove it.
- 17:04I could show this bill on our website.
- 17:06I won't, but I have the bill.
- 17:08I bought a head of cauliflower.
- 17:12I like cauliflower.
- 17:13How much did you pay for that?
- 17:14Okay, and it's not very big.
- 17:15No, it's not that big.
- 17:17For this head of cauliflower, I paid $7.99.
- 17:21See right there, $7.99.
- 17:23$7.99.
- 17:24$7.99! For cauliflower.
- 17:26For cauliflower.
- 17:28And let's be honest, cauliflower really doesn't have a lot of, there's not a lot of health.
- 17:34It's just cauliflower.
- 17:36It's like, well. There's gotta be something, I don't think there is.
- 17:39I'm going to check on that.
- 17:40But most people cover it with like cheese and stuff.
- 17:42Well, that's what makes it good.
- 17:43That's what takes all the health stuff out of it.
- 17:46$7.99 for this.
- 17:48So no wonder people are struggling.
- 17:51Where was this made?
- 17:52Where?
- 17:52It's a product of the USA.
- 17:55Doesn't say where in the USA.
- 17:56Did it have tariffs on it?
- 17:57Could have.
- 17:58The cauliflower tariffs.
- 18:00There might be.
- 18:01The way it's going.
- 18:01For $7.99, you could catch a flight and go down there and get your own cauliflower. Pick your own.
- 18:07But yeah, I couldn't believe it.
- 18:08$7.99.
- 18:08I have a question for you.
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:10With the price of fruit and vegetables these days, do you ever try to grow your own?
- 18:15Yes.
- 18:16Actually, yes.
- 18:17Yes, we have.
- 18:18Yes, we have.
- 18:20We've tried to grow fruit.
- 18:22We have our orange tree.
- 18:23Well, you have a lime tree, I have an orange.
- 18:26My orange tree is not doing well.
- 18:28I think we're in the wrong environment.
- 18:29Well, it's in our office.
- 18:32It's mine's in the office.
- 18:33I don't know.
- 18:34It's not doing well.
- 18:35There's no oranges.
- 18:36But do you grow a garden to try to save money?
- 18:38No, do I grow a garden?
- 18:39Are you kidding me?
- 18:41I can't grow.
- 18:42I can't grow.
- 18:42Do you grow?
- 18:43You grow stuff, don't you?
- 18:44I grow some things.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:46Well, I don't know.
- 18:46Like I can't.
- 18:48Some people love gardening and I can't.
- 18:51I just can't.
- 18:52It's a lot of work.
- 18:53I bought apples the other day.
- 18:55I know people are going to just shake their head at this.
- 18:57And I swear it was four apples.
- 18:59Remember when apples was like the cheap fruit?
- 19:01You could buy apples for like a thousand apples for like $10.
- 19:05Apples, bananas, they all used to be reasonable.
- 19:08I'm not kidding.
- 19:09I almost fell over at the till.
- 19:10$8 for four apples.
- 19:13It's unbelievable.
- 19:14It's craziness.
- 19:17I don't know if you know what to say about that.
- 19:19I was shopping for blueberries the other day.
- 19:22And I'm not kidding you.
- 19:25$12 for a little plastic basket of blueberries.
- 19:29That don't even look that good.
- 19:30That don't look good.
- 19:31No.
- 19:31They look terrible.
- 19:32And so they used to say when things weren't in season to buy frozen.
- 19:36However, have you looked at the price of frozen these days?
- 19:39I know none of it is cheap anymore.
- 19:42It's all just it's unbelievable.
- 19:44And so there's the blueberries, there's the strawberries are through the roof.
- 19:50You got to take out a loan.
- 19:51Got to go to the bank, get a loan for a pint of strawberries.
- 19:55Although I'm going to say I bought raspberries the other day.
- 19:58And raspberries were a good price.
- 20:00You have to really watch for the sales.
- 20:01You do.
- 20:02You got to shop around.
- 20:03You got to shop around.
- 20:04And now if you're listening to us probably like in California or Florida or something like that, you're like, ah, you people are crazy because you get it all year down there.
- 20:13This is Edmonton, this is Alberta.
- 20:16Today it's snowing.
- 20:17Nobody's growing.
- 20:21The other day I saw grapes, $12.
- 20:24I know.
- 20:25You know where they were grown?
- 20:26Chile, Chilean grapes, green grapes, $12.
- 20:31Listen, I feel we need to be more self sustainable and grow more of our own food.
- 20:35Not you and I, but no, definitely not me. No, no, no, no, no, but businesses.
- 20:39Yeah, we need more businesses.
- 20:41We need more Canadian businesses, like those big greenhouses.
- 20:44That's right.
- 20:45If you want to go into the greenhouses, you should.
- 20:47Yeah, that's a good business.
- 20:48It is.
- 20:49Like hot house tomatoes or those kinds of things.
- 20:52I agree with you.
- 20:53I think we should do more of that.
- 20:55That's a good idea.
- 20:56I don't know what the cost would be.
- 20:58Might not be any cheaper.
- 20:59I don't know.
- 20:59But nonetheless.
- 21:00It can't be more.
- 21:01OK, we got a couple of other things here.
- 21:02What do you got over there?
- 21:04You have...
- 21:05Oh, because it's that time of year.
- 21:07It's almost Easter.
- 21:08It's Easter.
- 21:09And Cadbury Mini Eggs.
- 21:11I love.
- 21:12Oh, these are the best.
- 21:12I love Cadbury Mini Eggs.
- 21:14Cadbury Mini Eggs are the best.
- 21:16But Cadbury Mini Eggs are through the roof.
- 21:20I know.
- 21:21This is the littlest bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs you can buy.
- 21:25It's got 170 calories and there's, I'm not kidding, there's like six Mini Eggs in there.
- 21:31Six Mini Eggs.
- 21:33Oh, I don't want to know.
- 21:34This has, you want to talk about sugar, 22 grams of sugar.
- 21:4022 grams.
- 21:40Holy smokes.
- 21:41For this, how much did I pay?
- 21:43It's on my bill here.
- 21:44For these little Mini Six, I'm not, I'm counting in one, two, three, four, five.
- 21:50Yeah, six, six, six Mini Eggs, $2.49 for six Mini Eggs.
- 21:58I've seen the big bags of Mini Eggs for $24.
- 22:01I saw that.
- 22:02Who's paying $24 for Mini Eggs?
- 22:05I don't know.
- 22:06I guess you have to wait till after Easter, but even then, they're still really expensive.
- 22:10Six Mini Eggs for $2.49.
- 22:12I know.
- 22:13There was a day when you could go in and buy chocolate for like a nickel.
- 22:17It's true.
- 22:17A nickel.
- 22:18Yeah, you're not getting a chocolate bar anywhere for under $2.
- 22:22I'm going to put in a shameless plug for a store.
- 22:26This is where the best price on chocolate bars, I know where you are going with this. The dollar store.
- 22:30The dollar store! Let's talk about the dollar store.
- 22:32I love it.
- 22:33I got to be honest.
- 22:34At first, I wasn't a big dollar store fan because I felt like it was cheap, cheap products, but they're not.
- 22:40You know what?
- 22:40The Dollar stores come a long way.
- 22:41They have come a long way.
- 22:43I used to not buy my gum at the dollar store because it was stale.
- 22:47That's what you used to tell me.
- 22:48Now the gum is fresh.
- 22:49I know.
- 22:50Same with the chocolate bars.
- 22:51Because you know what I do?
- 22:52I squeeze the chocolate bar to see how fresh it is.
- 22:56I know.
- 22:57If your buying chocolate bar at a store I've been to and you're wondering why, it's because I squeezed it.
- 23:02But you can get so much at the dollar store and way more reasonable.
- 23:07So the other thing that I buy there are Ziploc bags.
- 23:12Yes.
- 23:12Because they are half the price.
- 23:14So much cheaper.
- 23:16So much cheaper.
- 23:16Yes.
- 23:17Everything is so much cheaper.
- 23:19Everything at the dollar.
- 23:20And now they sell name brand.
- 23:22They do.
- 23:22They sell Betty Crocker.
- 23:23I know.
- 23:24They sell Campbell's.
- 23:25They sell Lay's chips.
- 23:28And there are some.
- 23:30OK, so I'm a bit of a dollar store snob.
- 23:33Yes.
- 23:34I find some dollar store are better than others.
- 23:38I agree with this.
- 23:39Do you mean like name dollar stores?
- 23:43Yes.
- 23:43Yes.
- 23:43Yes.
- 23:44I don't know if we should.
- 23:45We won't name them.
- 23:46No.
- 23:46But I only frequent one.
- 23:47There's only one I go to.
- 23:48Yes.
- 23:49Yeah, that's right.
- 23:50The others are, to me, they're not quite as good.
- 23:53No.
- 23:53There's that one dollar store.
- 23:55That has everything.
- 23:55Everything.
- 23:56Good price.
- 23:58I mean, I will admit it started out as the dollar store and everything was a dollar.
- 24:03Well, it's not a dollar anymore.
- 24:04No, there are some things.
- 24:05I'll tell you what I buy at the dollar store that I really like is my licorice.
- 24:08I love red licorice and it's a good price at the dollar store.
- 24:11And it's fresh.
- 24:13I know.
- 24:14It's fresh.
- 24:15I squeeze it.
- 24:15It's fresh.
- 24:17I really like it.
- 24:18And they do.
- 24:18They have good stuff there.
- 24:20You can buy soup there.
- 24:21Everything.
- 24:22You can buy everything there.
- 24:23I know.
- 24:23So I like the dollar store.
- 24:25I don't know about the Mini Eggs.
- 24:26If they sell them, I've never... They do! Do they?
- 24:28They do.
- 24:28How much are they?
- 24:29Have you checked the price?
- 24:30Way cheaper than...
- 24:31Next time you go can you check the Mini Eggs?
- 24:32Yes.
- 24:33Because $2.49, not good.
- 24:37All right.
- 24:38What else we got here?
- 24:39Okay.
- 24:39This is the one that really bothers me.
- 24:42This is it.
- 24:42I have here a bag of original Oreo cookies.
- 24:47You know the cookies with the cream in the middle?
- 24:49How do you eat your Oreos?
- 24:50Do you like separate them?
- 24:52I don't.
- 24:52No, I just eat them like they are.
- 24:53No, I pull them apart.
- 24:55I eat the cream.
- 24:56Okay, this is a 270 gram bag of Oreos and one serving.
- 25:05How do they figure this out?
- 25:06One serving of Oreos is three cookies.
- 25:09How do you? What?
- 25:11I don't know.
- 25:11That's what it says.
- 25:12One serving portion equals three cookies.
- 25:16And that's 160 calories per serving.
- 25:20And this cost me, these Oreos cost me $4.69.
- 25:26Were they on sale?
- 25:28No.
- 25:29Okay.
- 25:30No, were they?
- 25:32No, they weren't on sale.
- 25:33$4.69, but here's my beef.
- 25:36The package is smaller.
- 25:38You think the cookies are smaller?
- 25:40Well, let's open it and find out.
- 25:42I'm going to open it right now.
- 25:45Yes, look.
- 25:45Yes.
- 25:46Look at those.
- 25:47Yes, those are smaller.
- 25:48They used to be twice the size.
- 25:50I know.
- 25:52That's unbelievable.
- 25:53That's just like, come on.
- 25:55Seriously, it's no wonder they say one portion is three cookies.
- 25:59In the old days, one portion was one cookie.
- 26:02Now, you have to eat three.
- 26:04See, that's what that tells me.
- 26:05You have to eat three Oreo cookies to equal one in the old days, and you're paying $4.69 for a package of Oreos.
- 26:14Okay, do you know what else has gone up?
- 26:15And we don't have any here because it is not a climate-controlled environment for coolness.
- 26:20It's meat.
- 26:22Meat.
- 26:23Have you tried to buy beef lately?
- 26:25If you're going to buy beef, pretty much, it's a month's wages.
- 26:30You may as well just go buy the cow yourself.
- 26:32Exactly.
- 26:33Put the cow in your backyard because a good steak is going to cost you $20 plus.
- 26:39Just ground beef in general is through the roof.
- 26:42It's craziness.
- 26:45You're right, ground beef used to be such a good deal.
- 26:48Now, it's like ground beef is like the Ferrari of meats.
- 26:56It's a lot.
- 26:58It is.
- 27:00I don't understand.
- 27:01I have cousins that are farmers.
- 27:03I think they tried to explain it to me.
- 27:05But from my understanding, and this is coming from my cousins, my understanding is it's not the farmer getting any richer.
- 27:11No.
- 27:13It's somebody else.
- 27:14Yes.
- 27:15The packing plant?
- 27:17I don't know.
- 27:18The truck driver?
- 27:19I have no idea.
- 27:21All I know is it's expensive.
- 27:24It's expensive and it's just really hard to eat well.
- 27:27That's right.
- 27:28Because it costs a fortune.
- 27:30And I don't know if you're like me, but like my meat, I like good meat.
- 27:33Yeah, I do too.
- 27:33So like I go to a store.
- 27:35A butcher.
- 27:35Where it's like, I'll just say it, Alberta beef, which I consider to be the best beef in the world.
- 27:40And I've had beef all around the world.
- 27:42Alberta beef, the best beef in the world.
- 27:44But it costs you.
- 27:45It costs you.
- 27:47It sure does.
- 27:47It's not cheap.
- 27:48No.
- 27:49So yeah, I don't know.
- 27:51Everything's just gotten more expensive.
- 27:53Stuff has gotten smaller and more expensive.
- 27:56Less of it in a package really drives me crazy.
- 27:59And it's, you know, here's so the other I love.
- 28:03I love Kraft Dinner.
- 28:05I love Kraft Dinner.
- 28:07I just do.
- 28:08And people don't realize.
- 28:09Okay, Kraft Dinner is ridiculous.
- 28:14How are you paying?
- 28:15I remember the days when you can buy Kraft Dinner for 97 cents a box.
- 28:18I can remember the days.
- 28:20For those of you who lived in Alberta and remember the store Woodward's.
- 28:24Oh yes, Woodward's.
- 28:25Woodward's had $1.49 day.
- 28:27Woodward's on Tuesdays.
- 28:30So my mom bought all my underwear when I was a kid.
- 28:32$1.49 day.
- 28:33I'm not even kidding you.
- 28:35Anyway, you can buy 10 boxes of Kraft Dinner for $1.49.
- 28:41I'm not kidding.
- 28:42And now it's almost $4 a box at some stores.
- 28:44That's right.
- 28:45And have you noticed when you open the box?
- 28:47Oh, it's way less.
- 28:50I call them micro noodles.
- 28:50I agree.
- 28:51They are so tiny.
- 28:54They're little noodles.
- 28:55Okay.
- 28:56But yes, they're small.
- 28:58But I want you to tell our listeners the secret to your Kraft Dinner.
- 29:02Yes.
- 29:03Okay.
- 29:04Now I'm just going to brag a little bit here.
- 29:05I make the best Kraft Dinner.
- 29:07And there's three things I do.
- 29:09Three things.
- 29:10I add more butter.
- 29:12Also bad for us.
- 29:14Butter makes everything better.
- 29:16I add more butter.
- 29:17I add more milk.
- 29:19I add the package of cheese.
- 29:22But what's the other secret?
- 29:24That's right.
- 29:24So one day I'm walking through the bulk store.
- 29:28You know, where you buy the bulk food.
- 29:30Bulk barn.
- 29:30And I'm walking.
- 29:32I just like to go there and peruse and see what's there.
- 29:34And I'm walking down the aisle.
- 29:36And there I notice in the bulk barn, in a bin is Kraft Dinner cheese.
- 29:44Just free cheese.
- 29:45Just, well, not free, to buy, but like.
- 29:48So I get a little baggie and I fill it up.
- 29:50And I take it home.
- 29:52And now I put the package.
- 29:53It comes in the Kraft Dinner.
- 29:54And I add like three or four heaping teaspoons.
- 29:59That's a lot of cheese.
- 30:00I know.
- 30:01But that's why you add the extra butter and a little extra milk.
- 30:04I'm telling you right now, folks, that Kraft cheese at the bulk store costs you next to nothing.
- 30:10But it will make your Kraft Dinner taste like gourmet Kraft Dinner.
- 30:14Cam encourages you all to highly try it.
- 30:18Try it and send me a note.
- 30:19Go to the website and say, I tried that.
- 30:22Sometimes, you can get it at other stores in the bulk, but the best place is Bulk Barn.
- 30:27So I'll just give you the recipe once again.
- 30:29Micro noodles in the Kraft Dinner box.
- 30:32The thing is with Kraft Dinner, one box used to feed your whole family.
- 30:36Not anymore.
- 30:36Now you need like three boxes.
- 30:37It's true.
- 30:38So you have the micro noodles.
- 30:40Then you...
- 30:42Don't overcook your Kraft Dinner.
- 30:44I'm just saying this.
- 30:45This is important.
- 30:45Some people boil the...
- 30:47Heck, it's a micro noodle.
- 30:49If you boil the heck out of it, it becomes a microscopic noodle.
- 30:55Seven to nine minutes.
- 30:56I'm an eight minute person.
- 30:57Eight minutes on the Kraft Dinner.
- 31:00You rinse it.
- 31:01Rinse it.
- 31:01Oh, rinse it.
- 31:02Yes.
- 31:02Yes.
- 31:04Put extra butter.
- 31:06I don't...
- 31:06I can't remember what it says.
- 31:08I think it's like a third, a teaspoon, a third of a teaspoon.
- 31:12I got to say I'm probably at like two teaspoons.
- 31:15And then it's a third cup of milk.
- 31:17I add a little more, little more milk.
- 31:19Then the cheese, stir.
- 31:22Then I add the extra cheese, stir.
- 31:24I'm telling you, folks.
- 31:26I'm telling you.
- 31:26You heard it here on the podcast.
- 31:27Send me a note.
- 31:28If you did, if you...
- 31:30You're all going to go out and try it now.
- 31:31Cause you know, that sounds like...
- 31:32It's creamy.
- 31:33It's rich.
- 31:35And it doesn't cost a ton of money, but it's, it's still expensive.
- 31:40Kraft Dinner.
- 31:41It's like, it's...
- 31:43Folks, this is the world we live in today.
- 31:45You know, the other one, cause this was the college student will profess to this, is Cup Of Noodles.
- 31:51Ramen Noodle.
- 31:51I always...
- 31:53Did you, when you were in university?
- 31:54I lived on Kraft Dinner, Ramen Noodles, yes.
- 31:58And so remember when you could buy Ramen Noodles for like 50 cents a cup?
- 32:03Now...
- 32:04Holy smokes.
- 32:05It's like a buck a cup.
- 32:07I know.
- 32:07For a Ramen Noodle.
- 32:08I know.
- 32:11I'm not a big Ramen Noodle cup.
- 32:13I overdid it in university.
- 32:15Yeah, and now you're done?
- 32:16Yeah, I can't.
- 32:16You know what turned me off?
- 32:18I shouldn't say this, but what turned me off the Ramen Noodle is I saw on TV one time the cup of Ramen Noodle.
- 32:24Inside the cup, they use a wax to keep the water.
- 32:28If they didn't, you'd pour the hot water in and the cup would fall apart.
- 32:31People drink it and that wax goes into our body.
- 32:35I think you were warning Hannah about this.
- 32:36I did.
- 32:37And Hannah changed her ways.
- 32:38She now pours the cup of noodles into a bowl.
- 32:40Hannah loves her Ramen Noodle.
- 32:41I know she does.
- 32:42She eats them almost every day.
- 32:44But now she puts them in a bowl and adds the sauce.
- 32:47We don't want anything to happen to Hannah.
- 32:49You don't need your arteries all waxing up on you. No.
- 32:51Anyway.
- 32:52Well, that's enough of like the saturated fat chocolate chips.
- 32:56The saturated fat chocolate chips.
- 32:58Okay, folks, I know as you've been listening to this podcast, you've been nodding a lot going, yes, yes, you're right.
- 33:05The other thing I know is you are all going to go, oh no, I go to this store and I get a deal.
- 33:11Drop us a line.
- 33:12Tell us where you shop.
- 33:14Yes, and people will, I know, I know, I know, they'll come on and say, you should like do coupons.
- 33:21Cam, I've tried. I can't do coupons.
- 33:22Me too.
- 33:23I can't.
- 33:24I've tried.
- 33:25I can't do coupons.
- 33:26And I can't hop from store to store because it's exhausting.
- 33:28No, that's right.
- 33:30Yeah, so the other thing is with the coupons is I put a little note in my, because Canada Post in their infinite wisdom no longer delivers the mail to my door.
- 33:41They deliver it to a community mailbox.
- 33:45So I have to go there to my mail, which by the way, Canada Post, when it's minus 30, the lock doesn't work on the door.
- 33:52I'm just saying.
- 33:53Anyway, I put a little sticker in there.
- 33:56No junk mail.
- 33:58Why?
- 33:59Because I was getting so much junk mail of flyers and coupons, so I don't even get the coupons.
- 34:06I'm going to give our listeners a little handy tip.
- 34:08Do you know what I use for all my flyers now?
- 34:10What's that?
- 34:11It's called the Flip app.
- 34:13Yes, Flip.
- 34:14And it's amazing.
- 34:15They do a comparison.
- 34:16Yeah.
- 34:16And it's great.
- 34:17And it lists all of the new flyers for the week.
- 34:20You're right.
- 34:20You can just quickly scroll.
- 34:21You can circle.
- 34:22The only thing I don't like about the Flip app, and I do have it on my phone, is when you're at the till and there's a person in front of you using Flip, it takes a little longer because they're having to scroll.
- 34:32It's true.
- 34:33And they're like, see?
- 34:34And the lady's like, okay, click.
- 34:36And so it just takes a little.
- 34:37But when it's my turn and I'm using Flip, you're saving money.
- 34:40So check it out.
- 34:41Check it out.
- 34:42They don't pay me to say that, but I do like it.
- 34:44But hey, Flip, if you want to pay us, we're open to Flip.
- 34:47So I'm just saying.
- 34:48That's right.
- 34:48So there you go.
- 34:49So yeah, there it is, folks.
- 34:52It's the sign of the times.
- 34:53It's what it is.
- 34:55Less for more.
- 34:56That's what it is, less for more.
- 34:58Less for more.
- 34:59And we're just paying more.
- 35:01That's the way it is.
- 35:02But like you said, if you have listener tips for us, shoot us a note.
- 35:07But don't ask Cam to garden because he won't.
- 35:09I'm not gardening.
- 35:10And there's reasons for that, which that's a whole other podcast.
- 35:14I'm not doing it.
- 35:14I'm just not getting in the garden.
- 35:17But I know people that garden and they love it.
- 35:19And they, the big gardens.
- 35:20Yeah.
- 35:22You just need to make friends with those people so you can like take their fruits and vegetables.
- 35:25But here's the thing about that.
- 35:26Oh, I hope they're not listening.
- 35:27This will get me in trouble.
- 35:28They always say, you can have whatever you want from the garden, but I have to go.
- 35:33You have to go pick it.
- 35:34So last time I played ignorance and I didn't know how to dig the potatoes, so they came.
- 35:41This is terrible.
- 35:42I can't believe you're admitting this on the podcast.
- 35:43I know.
- 35:43I don't even know.
- 35:45I'm not sure if they're listening.
- 35:46People probably are listening who know who I'm talking about.
- 35:49Anyway, they helped me dig the potatoes because I said I didn't know how to dig the potatoes.
- 35:54I know.
- 35:55I know.
- 35:55But I'm a city boy.
- 35:57That's fair.
- 35:58So anyway, folks, that's it for today.
- 36:02That's Pet Peeve number three.
- 36:04Yes.
- 36:05The price of things.
- 36:06The cost of living.
- 36:08And yeah.
- 36:09And it's going down.
- 36:10So hey, listen, hang in there.
- 36:12Shop for the bargain.
- 36:14Get the deal.
- 36:15Maybe check out the dollar store.
- 36:17Check out the dollar store.
- 36:19You know, I'm just going to say this.
- 36:20I don't know what, my daughter might listen to this, because I'm going to I'm going to throw her under the bus here because no, seriously, growing up, she always thought you can't go to the dollar store.
- 36:28It's not cool.
- 36:29You can't buy stuff at the dollar stores.
- 36:31I remember those conversations.
- 36:32Oh, dad, you can't buy that at the dollar store because it's not cool.
- 36:36Now, my daughter, who's on her own, who has to work for a living, who has to spend her own money.
- 36:44Now, my daughter thinks the dollar store is the best thing that's ever happened to her.
- 36:47Funny how life changes when you're out on your own.
- 36:50Yeah.
- 36:50She's like, dad, you'll never guess what I got at the dollar store.
- 36:53I'm like, yep, I told you.
- 36:55I told you one day you'd be buying.
- 36:57Dad's not forking over the cash.
- 36:59You're buying at the dollar store.
- 37:01That's the way it is.
- 37:02So parents, if your kids are giving you a tad bit of grief, although these days it's different, but if they are, because it's not cool, because you don't buy designer running shoes at the dollar store, you just wait.
- 37:13They'll keep doing what you're doing because the day will come.
- 37:16They'll appreciate it.
- 37:17They'll appreciate it.
- 37:19Anyhow, thanks for listening.
- 37:20You know what?
- 37:21I just want to say my bill.
- 37:22Yeah, what was the total?
- 37:23Total came to, well, $20.53 for one, two, four items.
- 37:30Oh, $20.53.
- 37:33It's ridiculous.
- 37:34However, that's the way it is.
- 37:36Thanks for listening, everybody.
- 37:37Don't forget, I'll tell you what is a good deal.

- 38:19That's right.
- 38:19To save money.
- 38:20What a great conversation starter.
- 38:22Where do you shop?
- 38:23Where do you get your deals?
- 38:24I know.
