- 0:00What happened with this press event? It was for
- 0:01The Traitors. Yes. Have you watched The Traitors?
- 0:04I've never watched it, but I know about it. Okay,
- 0:06same. I was invited to The Traitors Experience.
- 0:10So fun. I thought it would all be, like, writers.
- 0:13Like, I was invited as a member of the press,
- 0:15but then it was a lot of, like, podcasters, actually,
- 0:18which was really cool. Basically, they grouped
- 0:21us into groups of 10, and then we went through
- 0:23and played Traitors. Okay. Which is, like, mafia,
- 0:27kind of. Yeah, that's how people were describing
- 0:30it to me when I would come up to them and be
- 0:32like, so I haven't watched the show. All I know
- 0:34is that Gabby Windey won. That tracks. And then
- 0:37there's an element of faux murder. Oh yeah, so
- 0:41it's mafia. Yeah. But what was really cool is
- 0:43walking through, it was in this venue space that's
- 0:46an old bank and it was just huge. Like there
- 0:49was so much space, which I just feel like in
- 0:51New York always hits really hard when you're
- 0:54like in a big space. And the set design was amazing.
- 0:57Like they had these really elaborate sets, a
- 0:59team of like 10 actors, all doing very convincing
- 1:02Scottish brogues leading us through these challenges.
- 1:05Okay, Peacock, they got money. Yeah, they got
- 1:08serious money. Were you a traitor? No, I got
- 1:11murdered. No. I was so scared I was going to
- 1:13be a traitor because I'd never played the game.
- 1:15So I was like, I don't even know what I would
- 1:17do as a traitor. I'm a really bad liar. And then
- 1:20I thought people were gonna think I was a traitor
- 1:22because I was so bad at the challenges. Because
- 1:26so like the first one was we had all the portraits
- 1:29of this season's players and we had to like match
- 1:34them. They basically had riddles for the seating
- 1:36chart being like so and so was on this show
- 1:39and she needs to be sat next to this person from
- 1:41this show. And I didn't know any of the people.
- 1:44Luckily some other people in my group really
- 1:46knew. But I was like, oh, they're totally going
- 1:48to think I'm a traitor because I'm so bad at
- 1:51this that I'm just like standing in the corner,
- 1:53not able to contribute. And basically, if you're
- 1:55a traitor, if the main group loses the challenge,
- 1:58then you win. Right. So your whole objective
- 2:00is just to sabotage. But I was just so bad. And
- 2:03you were sabotaging by not knowing. Yeah. I was
- 2:06just being myself, actually, so. Season 1, Episode
- 2:2313, Portrait with Bandaged Ear, which came out
- 2:26January 17, 2012. Obviously, this is the Van
- 2:30Gogh. The Van Gogh, yes. I didn't even need to
- 2:33Google it. Van Gogh cuts off his ear and then
- 2:36sends it to a sex worker named Rachel. I didn't
- 2:39know that's where it went. Yeah, he gives it
- 2:41to, like, a sex worker. He got into a fight with
- 2:44Paul Gaugin. And then he cut off his ear. But
- 2:47did you know the ASL sign for Van Gogh's? It's
- 2:50like you're cutting your ear off, guys. Them
- 2:52opening with the arrest scene again, but with
- 2:55sound. I was not expecting. No. I think it was
- 2:58helpful. Because now we see exactly why they
- 3:02tackled him to the ground. Because they said,
- 3:04drop your weapon. And he didn't drop the wrench.
- 3:06Because he couldn't hear, guys. And then you
- 3:09see that he's trying to sign, but he's being
- 3:11restrained behind his back. They said to him,
- 3:13we have a warrant out for your arrest. If they
- 3:16knew who he was. Wouldn't they know he's deaf?
- 3:18Wouldn't they know he's deaf? I don't know. Surprise,
- 3:21surprise that the cop is dumb, but like. I don't
- 3:24think. It's not like there's some like database,
- 3:26but I feel like if they had a profile of him,
- 3:28wouldn't they be able to see that he went to
- 3:30Carlton School for the Deaf? Your attendance
- 3:33in a certain school is not in like some database
- 3:36that all the cops can see. But they had his name?
- 3:39Where does the information start and stop? Right.
- 3:41I don't know. Because we didn't find out. They
- 3:44catch him because surveillance cameras caught
- 3:46him. Yeah. So they were able to somehow see the
- 3:49face and figure out it's Emmett Bledsoe.
- 3:51But we don't know. But they never explain how
- 3:54they got from like point A to point B. But Melody
- 3:57shows up at the police station and there's already
- 3:59an interpreter there. Yeah. She says, where the
- 4:02hell is my son? And then she asked if there's
- 4:04an interpreter. And they said, yeah. Great. With
- 4:06him at booking. So clearly somewhere on the ride.
- 4:09Somewhere on the ride, they figured out. Yeah.
- 4:11Oh, shit. We need an interpreter. And they explain
- 4:14to Melody that Emmett has been charged with trespassing
- 4:17and vandalism. And she says, that's a load of
- 4:19crap. But then the interpreter doesn't speak
- 4:22that back. He just says, she doesn't believe
- 4:25you. Yeah. I think he was trying to be on her
- 4:28side and not make her look bad. Isn't that very
- 4:31against all ethics of an interpreter? That is
- 4:33kind of against the ethics of being an interpreter.
- 4:35Yeah. They're supposed to interpret exactly what
- 4:38they say. They do a lot of that on the show.
- 4:40They really do. And I would hope that doesn't
- 4:43happen in real life. Everything I've been taught
- 4:45about interpreters is like you are merely
- 4:48a vessel for communication. Exactly. You can't
- 4:51side with anyone. You are just there for access,
- 4:53but yeah. Whatever. Yeah, and they reveal, yeah,
- 4:56we've got photos of Emmett tagging this billboard.
- 4:59Clear as day. These are the greatest CCTV cameras
- 5:04I've ever seen. I think he even comments on it.
- 5:07He's like, you'd be amazed what these cameras
- 5:09are able to pick up these days. He's like, these
- 5:10digital cameras instead of film. Yeah. I guess
- 5:13so. And then Melody's like shit. Okay. And then
- 5:16apparently they're pressing charges. Who is pressing
- 5:19charges? The city? Like if the city owns the
- 5:22billboard? Right. Or if someone else owns the
- 5:26billboard, then the private owner of the billboard,
- 5:28maybe? Again, no explanation. This does sound
- 5:32like something the city would do. They said,
- 5:34we take these crimes very seriously. Nobody got
- 5:38hurt except for Emmett when he fell off the fence.
- 5:41And when they handcuffed him. Also, the piece
- 5:43of art is cool. I know. It's not even, like,
- 5:46violent or graphic in any way. It's not inappropriate.
- 5:50Don't you guys have anything better to do? They
- 5:52should, but I guess not. Then next scene, Bay
- 5:55is meeting Angelo at a restaurant. Another date
- 5:59spot. She even says it feels like a cross between
- 6:01an interview and a date. Yeah, thank god she
- 6:04said something. And he's like, what, no chaperone?
- 6:06And she says, no one wanted to go get Cuban -Chinese
- 6:09fusion. Okay. Oh, and also Angelo, like European
- 6:13kisses her on both her cheeks when she comes
- 6:15in. Oh my god. And she's very startled by this.
- 6:18Sure, that makes sense. She makes a comment when
- 6:21the espresso shows up. She says, my parents don't
- 6:24love the idea of me drinking caffeine. She's
- 6:2616. But remember in the first episode she drinks
- 6:29coffee? Yes, as like a rebellion. Oh my god.
- 6:32I think there's a callback to that. You're so
- 6:35right. And now she's like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 6:37I'm a good girl now. I guess so. Anyway, I said
- 6:41it then and I'll say it now. I think it's strange
- 6:44for a parent to not let you drink caffeine at
- 6:4716. I don't know. I had a lot of autonomy growing
- 6:50up. You did. I think you especially had a lot
- 6:54of freedom as a child. I don't know if I had
- 6:57those rules. I think if I started to, my parents
- 6:59wouldn't have done anything. But just my parents
- 7:01both don't drink coffee. So I just never got
- 7:03into it. Yeah, my parents both really do. So
- 7:07maybe they were like, we're not going to be hypocrites
- 7:09and say you can't have it. Right. Plus, I was
- 7:11tall enough. I was so worried it was going to
- 7:14stem my growth. And spoiler alert, I am 5 '1",
- 7:17so I'm short. But your parents are also both
- 7:19small. Yeah, we're a small family. There was
- 7:21no chance you were going to be super tall. I
- 7:25don't know. Did you have big dreams when you
- 7:27were playing basketball? You were like, if I
- 7:28just don't drink coffee. I just wanted to be
- 7:31like 5 '3", or 5 '4". Just a few inches. I wanted
- 7:35to be average. 5 '4 is what, like, the average
- 7:37height for an American woman. I think I was striving
- 7:40for that. That didn't happen. Anyway, Angelo
- 7:43orders an espresso for Bay. And then he's like,
- 7:46sorry, didn't realize the caffeine thing. I don't
- 7:49know how to be a father to a 16 year old. And
- 7:51then Bay says, well, maybe if you stuck around
- 7:53with Daphne, you would have a better idea. Ooh.
- 7:57Burn. Yeah. But then Angelo's like, what should
- 8:00I do about that? To Bay. Which I don't feel is
- 8:03appropriate. No. Angelo annoyed me so much this
- 8:06episode. Yeah. Oh my God. But also he was looking
- 8:09very handsome. I know. And Regina agrees. Also
- 8:12later on when he's like, I need a haircut. I
- 8:14was like, no, don't cut your hair. You're so
- 8:16sexy. But then she runs her hand through his
- 8:18hair. She's like, okay. My God. Daphne, if you
- 8:22remember, was recruited onto the Buckner basketball
- 8:25team and she's practicing her b-ball signs with
- 8:28Toby. Yeah. Question about the signs. Is that,
- 8:31do teams always do that? Are there signs for
- 8:33every single play? Usually a sign or like a word.
- 8:37Like I think when I was little, we had one call
- 8:40that was like penguin. And then that meant that
- 8:42someone ran to do a pick or something. Okay.
- 8:45But I guess this Buckner team, they do like hand
- 8:48signs. That's convenient. And then, yeah, Bay
- 8:50comes in to be like, hey, I was just with Angelo
- 8:53and he really wants to see you. Poor Bay that
- 8:57she like not even this parent is solely focused
- 9:00on her. And she has to be the messenger. Also,
- 9:03I hate Daphne's gray and orange cardigan and
- 9:05her little headband. I know. I just, I hated
- 9:08it. I didn't hate Bay's outfits this episode.
- 9:10I think Bay was fine. Well, they put Bay in a
- 9:12lot of long necklaces in this episode. That was
- 9:16so 2012 though. Long layered necklaces. I know,
- 9:18doesn't mean I have to like it. I just think
- 9:21putting Daphne in that much orange with her coloring
- 9:25is like a ginger crime. And then. We're at
- 9:27the guest house. Yeah, Daphne goes upstairs and
- 9:30she's flipping through photo albums. She's looking
- 9:33through old photo albums of her as a child. And
- 9:36she sees a lot of missing photos that were removed
- 9:39from the album. First of all, this is not her.
- 9:42Usually when actors have baby pictures, they'll
- 9:46get real baby pictures of the actor. So there
- 9:49should have been young Katie LeClerc in these
- 9:52albums. Yeah. But instead, we have some child
- 9:55actor who looks like her pictures have been
- 9:57professionally taken. They're like Canon
- 10:00Coolpix. They're very glossy, like high res. High
- 10:04res. Perfectly staged. Looks like they were just
- 10:06taken yesterday. Because they were. Yeah, but
- 10:10what? The girls were born in the early 90s, at
- 10:12least. The photo quality would not be that good.
- 10:15No. Unless they had a very expensive camera.
- 10:17Most likely Regina would have had a point and
- 10:19shoot or a disposable camera. And the quality
- 10:21would not have been like that. No. Anyways, that
- 10:24bothered me. I was like, you couldn't get any
- 10:27old baby pictures of Katie LeClerc and then
- 10:29like Photoshop them with Regina and Angelo? It's
- 10:32also funny because this one day at the park that
- 10:35they just took like 75 photos of. And then it
- 10:38was just like more photos of the same park from
- 10:41a different angle with Angelo in them. It looks
- 10:43like they got a professional photographer. Yeah,
- 10:45like the three of them in a professional photo
- 10:47shoot. On this blue slide. Yeah, it's very not,
- 10:50it's not very believable. I want to give a quick
- 10:52shout out to Emma. Because the next note that
- 10:55I had was everyone finds out that Emmett gets
- 10:58arrested. But I was voiced to texting these notes.
- 11:02And so it says everyone finds out Emma and like
- 11:05the way she styled with emojis in my phone in
- 11:08my contact has been arrested. So shout out to
- 11:11you, Emma. Regina gets a text from Melody that
- 11:14Emmett was arrested. And then she tells Daphne
- 11:16and then Daphne tells Bay. Yeah. And then Bay
- 11:19immediately goes to Melody's house. Which is
- 11:22a bad idea, Bay. And is like, it's my fault.
- 11:26Don't tell Melody that. First of all, Melody
- 11:28already knows. Also, second of all, it's not.
- 11:30Here's how, I feel conflicted about it. Because
- 11:33Bay says it a lot this episode that it's like
- 11:35her fault. I know that Emmett did that. And the
- 11:38photos are from the time that he chose to do
- 11:40it on his own as a birthday present to her. But
- 11:43she had already asked him to do it with her.
- 11:45And they had gone and almost gotten caught. But
- 11:47then he took the initiative to go and do it alone
- 11:50again. So I think it's more his fault. But I
- 11:52do think that Melody's right to be like, if he
- 11:55didn't know you, he would have not ever done
- 11:57something this illegal and stupid. Also, he just
- 12:01got home from the precinct. She's like, he is so
- 12:03grounded. This is not the time. But I don't think
- 12:06she's wrong in being like, there is a direct
- 12:08line between what happened and me. Sure. Not
- 12:11even just because he did it for her birthday.
- 12:13If he had just found out she did street art and
- 12:16then done that. That would have been weird.
- 12:18Well, that would have been weird. And also, how
- 12:21did you get the know how or whatever? But the
- 12:24fact that she brought him first and they tried
- 12:26to do it together and it went awry, I kind of
- 12:29feel like they were only, he only, not to be
- 12:32like he only got caught the second time because
- 12:34they'd already tried and like the cops had pulled
- 12:36up on them but like do we think they were keeping
- 12:38an extra eye on that billboard? Maybe? People were
- 12:42trying to tag it. That's a good point maybe. Which
- 12:44if that's true that's Emmett's own fault because
- 12:46you should have thought of that because that's
- 12:47dumb. Don't go back to the scene of the crime.
- 12:49Find a different billboard. Yeah find a different
- 12:52billboard but anyway yeah Melody starts signing
- 12:56to Bay ever since you and Emmett started hanging
- 12:58out and she does the sign hanging out again. Reference
- 13:01to last episode. Basically ever since you two
- 13:04started hanging out he's been coming home with
- 13:06bloody clothes and all this stuff and if you really
- 13:09want to help, she fingerspells stay away. Yeah.
- 13:12To Bay. Ouch. I feel for Bay in this interaction,
- 13:16too, because Bay is like, please slow down. Like,
- 13:18I'm trying to understand. And then you watch
- 13:21her get so frustrated that she's trying to sign,
- 13:23like, I want to help him. But she, like, can't.
- 13:26She, like, signs it wrong and she has to redo
- 13:28it. Right. And then Angelo shows up at the salon
- 13:31and he's like. Ambushelo. Ambushelo is
- 13:35back. But this time he's got long, flowy hair
- 13:37and he's like. And money. Gina, I need you to
- 13:41cut my hair. And she's like running her fingers
- 13:44through it for some reason. It's, I get it. She
- 13:47can't resist. He also says, one, I got an apartment.
- 13:51And two, right near the apartment, I guess, there's
- 13:54a space for her salon. And it's perfect for your
- 13:57salon. And I have the money. No explanation of
- 14:01where he gets the money. Yeah. Which she still
- 14:03hasn't told him that she knew about the switch.
- 14:06So like. I can't believe she's going along with
- 14:08his plan. First she says no, but later on she's
- 14:11going to cave. He is really pushing it, too.
- 14:14Yeah, he wants her back, I think. Do you think?
- 14:17I also wonder if he stands to get a profit from
- 14:20the salon, too. I don't really understand his
- 14:22motivations. He later says it's. To make up
- 14:26for everything? To make up for leaving Daphne.
- 14:29But that's such a weird... But what? How would
- 14:31that... Anyway, after Ambushelo sees Regina
- 14:36at the salon. It's game time at Buckner. And
- 14:39Daphne's a benchwarmer. Poor Daphne. I have
- 14:41been there. You have? I have played several games
- 14:45where I've sat on the bench and not played. Yeah,
- 14:48this was unrelatable to me completely. It sucks.
- 14:51Because I've never played a sport. I guess I
- 14:54thought that it wasn't that uncommon of an occurrence.
- 14:56It happens often, especially for basketball.
- 14:59But I think what's frustrating is that I guess
- 15:02we as the audience know that Daphne is good.
- 15:04But John, Kathryn, Toby and Regina are all
- 15:08watching the game. Yeah. And then Toby accidentally
- 15:11lets it slip that Kathryn is writing the book.
- 15:14And Regina is not happy about this. No, she shuts
- 15:17down so fast. Like she turns. She goes, do you
- 15:21need more money or do you just want to humiliate
- 15:24me? Crazy. But then Kathryn should have explained
- 15:27that the journalist from the Kansas City Herald
- 15:30was going to write a book about them instead
- 15:32and exploit them. So she was just taking matters
- 15:35into her own hands. And I think if she explained
- 15:37that, Regina would have been more supportive.
- 15:39I think so too. But I also don't think Regina
- 15:42has any right to be like, no. Because Regina
- 15:45goes, no. Like, I won't agree to that. And she
- 15:49goes, you're not going to write without my cooperation.
- 15:51And Kathryn said, I literally do not need your
- 15:54cooperation. No. I feel like Regina can't just
- 15:57like be normal about things. No, not at all.
- 16:00The permission she really needs is from Bay and
- 16:03Daphne. The kids. She really needs to make sure
- 16:05they're okay with it. Yeah. I think, I guess
- 16:07Regina's concern is being exposed to the world
- 16:11that she knew about the switch. Oh, 100%. If I
- 16:13were Regina, I also would not want that book
- 16:15out there because I would look like the bad guy
- 16:17because she kind of was. Yeah. And whose fault
- 16:20is that? And whose fault is that? Anyway, yeah,
- 16:22I don't have much sympathy for her. No. We're
- 16:25at Carlton now and Bay goes to see Emmett because
- 16:28he's been really distant. He hasn't been texting.
- 16:30And he says, sorry, mom took away my phone. But
- 16:33he's also being very evasive. Very evasive. And
- 16:36Bay says basically that she wants to turn herself
- 16:39in to the police. And Emmett is like, no, I did
- 16:43it. And he's taking full responsibility for his
- 16:45actions. Basically like, stay out of it. You've
- 16:47done enough. And then Bay sees the bruises on
- 16:49his wrists. Poor guy. And then she asks Emmett,
- 16:53are we okay? And he says, sure. Painful. So painful.
- 16:57Just don't say anything if your answer is going
- 16:59to be sure. I know. Sure is such a painful answer.
- 17:02Back at Buckner. Buckner wins. Yay. But it's
- 17:05no fun because Daphne didn't play. And then Daphne
- 17:08visits Emmett at home. Melody let her right in.
- 17:11First thing she says is not, how are you? But
- 17:13I think I'm going to see Angelo. That felt odd
- 17:16to me. Do you think? I think maybe she sees Emmett
- 17:19like self soothing with the music and being
- 17:21all moody. And she's like, let me break the ice
- 17:24with my problems. Maybe. Or maybe they texted.
- 17:28Maybe. Before, beforehand. The big thing happening
- 17:30right now with the Stranger Things ending is
- 17:33that the Duffer brothers keep, when people are
- 17:36like, what about this plot hole? Or like, what
- 17:38about this loose end? They just keep saying,
- 17:40well, it happened off screen. I hate that. So
- 17:42now every time I have a question about the episode
- 17:45we're watching where I'm like, wait, what? How
- 17:47did that resolve itself? Well, it happened off
- 17:49screen. Well, they texted off screen. I guess
- 17:51they must have texted off screen. Or Daphne's
- 17:53just being typically Daphne and a little self
- 17:56centered. Yeah. Like, I'm sad about... Because
- 17:59she's like, I'm going to see Angelo. And then
- 18:01she's like, also, I sat on the bench during my
- 18:04whole basketball game. But then she does ask
- 18:07him about the experience of being arrested. Yeah.
- 18:09She's like, hey. And it's so sad. He's on the
- 18:12verge of tears the whole time. He says, it felt
- 18:15like I was drowning. I hated being deaf, and I
- 18:18also hated myself for feeling that way. Yeah.
- 18:21Yeah. Poor guy. I wanted them to hug at the end.
- 18:24I know. He just sits there on the bed, weeping.
- 18:27And that's it. I feel that they should have hugged.
- 18:30They really should have. It's my one note. Yeah.
- 18:32And then at school, Simone flags Toby down, and
- 18:36she's like, hey, I feel like I know why they're
- 18:38not playing Daphne. We'll know what that's about.
- 18:40And then Melody comes to meet Regina outside
- 18:43of the salon for lunch. Melody just has a bowl
- 18:46of strawberries. Stop, she's eating? It's just
- 18:49a bowl of cut up strawberries. She says Emmett
- 18:51has to do 20 hours of community service and pay
- 18:53a $5,000 fine. Which I think is very
- 18:55high. Not a lot of community service, though.
- 18:58That's pretty low. It should be the opposite.
- 19:00Right. 100 hours community service, $2,000 fine?
- 19:04I don't know. Whatever. Maybe Kansas City really
- 19:06cracks down on... trespassing and vandalism.
- 19:09Which, trespassing? It's a billboard. I don't
- 19:13know. This pisses me off so much. But then Melody
- 19:15apologizes to Regina about game night. But I
- 19:18do feel like when she apologizes, there is an
- 19:21unspoken thing between them. I know no one else
- 19:24knows that Bay does the street art, but I feel
- 19:26like Regina can sense that Bay was probably involved
- 19:30in whatever Emmett got into. Right. And Melody
- 19:32at this point knows that Bay was involved. So
- 19:35even though Melody does apologize, I feel like
- 19:38there's this thing between them where they're
- 19:39both like, yeah, but you may be a little bit
- 19:42right, unfortunately. She hasn't apologized to
- 19:44Bay and it doesn't seem like she will. And then
- 19:46the $5,000 fine seems to be a stressor for Melody.
- 19:49She's like, I don't know if we're going to get
- 19:50that money. So that's it. So I don't think they're
- 19:53flush with cash like that, despite their river
- 19:56view. Guess not. Maybe a guidance counselor at
- 19:58school for the deaf doesn't pay well. Oh, I always
- 20:00forget that that's Melody's job. Yeah, she's
- 20:03the guidance counselor. Have we, at this point,
- 20:05we haven't seen her do that job. We just know
- 20:07she does that job because she said it when she
- 20:09was coaching. Yes, we haven't seen her teach
- 20:12or anything. Okay, that explains why she's at
- 20:14Carlton later. Because I was like, wait, she
- 20:16just shows up and Emmett, like, leaves. We'll
- 20:18get to it. Yeah. Okay, this is where I noted
- 20:21that Bay sends Emmett a text and she spells out
- 20:24the letters. Are you okay? Like the letter R?
- 20:29Yeah. The letter U? Okay. Okay. And then Emmett
- 20:33gets the text and the text is the words spelled
- 20:37out. Are you okay? Guys. I know. Easy fix. Seriously.
- 20:41I also was wondering, did he lie about Melody
- 20:46taking away his phone and he's just actually
- 20:48been ignoring her text? That's why I think too.
- 20:50Because maybe she took it away at first, but
- 20:53he sees the text and he flips the phone back
- 20:55over. Yeah. So he is not answering Bay's text.
- 20:58Now we're back at the Kennish house. Daphne goes
- 21:01up to Toby and I think they're going to work
- 21:04on some basketball signs again. And Toby's like,
- 21:06yeah, yeah, cool, cool, cool, cool. But then
- 21:09he very quickly drops that Simone or a friend.
- 21:13Yeah, he hides Simone's identity for some reason.
- 21:16He just says someone whose parent is on the board
- 21:19of trustees told him that the only reason she
- 21:23got recruited to Buckner is because Buckner
- 21:26qualifies for a $20,000 grant for schools who
- 21:29have students with disabilities participate in
- 21:31sports. And Buckner wants the grant money for
- 21:34new locker rooms. Okay. At this point, have we
- 21:37not been to multiple Buckner fundraisers? Why
- 21:40does this school need more money? I know. What
- 21:44is wrong with their current locker rooms? And
- 21:46even if something was wrong, just, like, throw
- 21:48another gala. They're greedy. To take, presumably,
- 21:52that's state money. That's right. And apparently
- 21:55the coach has no interest in playing Daphne
- 21:57because the principal basically shoved Daphne
- 22:00down his throat. And Toby is like, well, you
- 22:02just have to prove him wrong. Keep going to practice
- 22:04and whatnot. But also. I think I'm like, why
- 22:07can't you do both? Get the grant money and also
- 22:10play Daphne because she's good. But this is very
- 22:12upsetting news for Daphne. Yeah. And we'll see
- 22:15this really bothers her for the rest of the episode.
- 22:17Yeah, it really bothers her, which makes sense.
- 22:20Which would bother me too. Yeah, of course. Someone
- 22:22told me once that the only reason I got into
- 22:24college was because I was deaf. It was the meanest
- 22:27thing anyone's ever said to me. Why would they
- 22:29say that? Were you like fighting physically?
- 22:32Physically? No. Wait, what were you fighting about?
- 22:35I don't remember. She was like, Kara, you think
- 22:38you're so special. The only reason you got into
- 22:39this is because you're deaf. She was like, you
- 22:42make it like a whole thing. Like me being deaf,
- 22:44like a whole thing. Who was this person? It was.
- 22:49Wow. I know. Crazy. You're a better person than
- 22:53me. I didn't know what to do. Anyway. So John's been
- 22:56like, you need to tell the lawyer that you're
- 22:59writing a book. So she's like, I'm going to go
- 23:01by the office and. Her lawyer is out to lunch,
- 23:04apparently, so she's leaving her voicemail. And
- 23:06then she's like, oh, I see you right there. And
- 23:09she sees the lawyer across the parking lot. Smooching.
- 23:12Coming back from lunch, macking on some guy.
- 23:15It's Dale from the hospital. The big reveal.
- 23:18I just wrote some guy, and then I was like, I
- 23:20know he's someone, but I didn't realize.
- 23:22He's the guy that played golf with John. Yes.
- 23:25And, like, slightly threatened to John. Yes.
- 23:28That you should settle. Yes. So the big reveal.
- 23:31is that her make out buddy is Dale from the
- 23:33hospital board. Which, guys, that's a conflict
- 23:36of interest. That is a huge conflict of interest.
- 23:38And then pretty much after that is that, I'll
- 23:41just clean up this plot line. Kathryn tells
- 23:43John, and they fire her on the spot. They fire
- 23:46her. But before then, she walks in and she has
- 23:49something to tell them, and she never tells them
- 23:51what it is. Yeah, I don't know. But then she's
- 23:53like, fine, I'll send all the files from the
- 23:56lawsuit over. And that's the last we see of her. Oh,
- 23:58but also, I really liked when Kathryn said,
- 24:01I thought she was a lesbian. Yeah, Kathryn
- 24:03says, I'm just so surprised. I thought she was
- 24:05a lesbian. And John goes, oh, because of her
- 24:07haircut? And Kathryn goes, no, because I thought
- 24:10she had a crush on me. She was kind of giving
- 24:12lesbian in the show. She was giving lesbian.
- 24:14Anyways, that's the last we see of Amanda, really.
- 24:16Bye, Amanda. Bye, Amanda. She's gone the way
- 24:19of Liam. And then Daphne is at the Buckner Library,
- 24:22and she's waiting for her cooking class to start.
- 24:25When? What time of day do we think this class
- 24:29is taking place? It's gotta be afternoon? Because
- 24:33like, how does she have free time to just hang
- 24:36out in the library before cooking class if she's
- 24:39taking a full class load at Carlton? I don't
- 24:43know. Maybe she skipped lunch and went to the
- 24:46library and then maybe the cooking class is after
- 24:48lunch. Maybe. It happened off screen. Literally,
- 24:52it happened off screen. But Simone comes and
- 24:55is like, By the way, I'm also going to tell you
- 24:58the Buckner thing. But Daphne's like, you already
- 25:00know? And Simone's like, no, I'm the one that
- 25:03dropped it. But Daphne's furious that Simone
- 25:06didn't tell her straight up instead of going
- 25:08to Toby first. Yeah, I felt it was odd that she
- 25:10went to Toby first. Do we think she was trying
- 25:12to convince Toby that she's a good person because
- 25:14she's trying to date Toby? Is she trying to date
- 25:17Toby? Yes, for sure. I did not catch that. Oh,
- 25:20there's like a real vibe between them. Okay,
- 25:22maybe. So, like, that would be my only thoughts
- 25:25on her motivation for doing that. I don't know.
- 25:27Yeah, I was going to say, what is the point of
- 25:31sharing that information at all? It seems only
- 25:34hurtful. For one, I think Simone didn't want
- 25:36to get caught. Like, I don't think Simone knew
- 25:39that when Simone was encouraging Daphne to join
- 25:41the team. No, of course not. But I think that
- 25:45she doesn't want it to look like she was in on
- 25:47it somehow if that plot gets revealed and it's
- 25:51revealed that that's her dad doing that. Because
- 25:52she's a historically like a bitch at the school.
- 25:55Yes, and then two, she does genuinely care about
- 25:59Daphne from what I can tell and she doesn't want,
- 26:02she doesn't want Daphne to like kill herself
- 26:05practicing and take it personally when in reality
- 26:09like Simone's like it's really not about you
- 26:12at all. It's out of your hands. Yeah I guess that's fair.
- 26:15But she should have just come directly to Daphne.
- 26:17But I guess they weren't close enough friends.
- 26:19Maybe she didn't know how Daphne would react.
- 26:21I don't know. They made out with guys in front of
- 26:23each other. I think that's really connecting.
- 26:26So then Daphne is back at the Kennish house reading
- 26:28As I Lay Dying. By William Faulkner. Have you
- 26:32read it? No. But apparently it's a really heavy
- 26:34book because both Bay and Toby make a comment
- 26:36like, wow, doing some light reading, huh? Like
- 26:39brother like sister. Yeah. Bay asks Daphne, hey
- 26:43how's Emmett doing? Is he mad at me? Has he talked
- 26:47about me? Is he on phone lockdown or what's going
- 26:50on? And Daphne's being, Daphne's in such a bad
- 26:53mood after hearing about the grant thing.
- 26:56She immediately snaps at Bay and is like it's not
- 26:58about you. And she's right, to be fair. She's right
- 27:01basically Emmett's traumatized from the arrest
- 27:04and she said you don't get it and you never will
- 27:06get it. And then Bay says, I feel like you guys
- 27:09being deaf is like being lorded over me. And Daphne
- 27:13says the fact that you even think it's something
- 27:15to lord over you means you'll truly never get
- 27:18it. Yeah. I do think this is a classic case of
- 27:21like, it is not about you, Bay. And she's making
- 27:24it about her. I do think it would have been nice
- 27:26for Emmett to send a text like, hey, I need some
- 27:28space. Yeah. But also, I don't think she realizes
- 27:31like how upsetting this was. Yeah, totally. Because
- 27:35she doesn't know. No one's telling her. She doesn't
- 27:38know. Bay storms off and then Toby comes. He
- 27:41makes his own As I Lay Dying joke. And then she's
- 27:45like, wow, I'm really not in the mood for this.
- 27:47And he's like, what's wrong? And she's basically
- 27:50just feeling very down on herself about being
- 27:53deaf. What does she say? Oh, she says like, I'm
- 27:56disabled. It's a miracle I can talk to you and
- 27:59hold this book at the same time. And Toby's like,
- 28:01whoa. You're never like this. Yeah. He's like,
- 28:05what's up? And it happens off screen, guys. We
- 28:07don't find out what's up. But then she goes to
- 28:10Angelo's apartment. Yes. And it's revealed when
- 28:13she unloads on him that, yeah, that he's the
- 28:16source of whenever she feels like discriminated
- 28:19against or like someone's discounting her. It
- 28:23reminds her of when her father left her. She
- 28:24knocks on the door. He opens it. And the first
- 28:27thing she says is, did you leave me because I
- 28:29went deaf? What happened to hello? How are you?
- 28:32You know, deaf people are blunt like that. She
- 28:35said, let's cut to the point. I know. Very awkward
- 28:37conversation. He invites her in. But it's kind
- 28:40of sweet, too. Yeah. It kind of warmed my heart
- 28:43a little bit. He's like, I'm making soup. You
- 28:46used to love the soup when you were a child.
- 28:48And then she's thinking about it. And she's like,
- 28:50did you used to sing when you cooked? And he said,
- 28:52yeah. And then he sings the song a little bit.
- 28:54And I swooned a little. He's so cute. It's sweet.
- 28:57And then. But then he drops
- 29:00a stupid, ignorant question. Do you remember
- 29:02sound? And then he's like, never mind, don't
- 29:04answer that. It reminds me of when we first saw
- 29:07him and then he was like, you didn't even understand
- 29:09anything I said, did you? Yeah, he's so ignorant.
- 29:12But it's nice to have little reminders that he's
- 29:15trying, but he's still so ignorant. It's nice
- 29:17at least that he corrects himself and that he's
- 29:19like, I don't know what to say. At least he's
- 29:21self aware a little bit. But then, yeah, Daphne's
- 29:24just like, I need you to answer the question.
- 29:26Why did you leave? And like the main reasons
- 29:29he says is, one, you didn't look anything like
- 29:31me. Regina and I were fighting all the time and
- 29:34I felt like Regina was lying. But then she asks
- 29:36him again, one last time, if he left because
- 29:39she went deaf. And he says, maybe a little. Ouch.
- 29:42Ouch. But she says, thank you for telling me
- 29:44the truth. And then she leaves. And she leaves.
- 29:47Yeah. And then. We're at the salon. Yeah, Regina's
- 29:50leaving the salon. And Geraldo's like, hey, heard
- 29:53that you're gonna open a competing salon. And
- 29:57he basically threatens her. Yeah. He's like,
- 30:00after all I've done for you. And she's like,
- 30:02after all I've done for you, I brought you 10
- 30:04new clients and a lot of income for your salon.
- 30:07I don't really have any skin in this game. No,
- 30:10I'm like, who cares? I don't know Geraldo. I
- 30:13don't care. Yeah, Geraldo will be fine. But also
- 30:15like Regina, I still don't think you should open
- 30:17your own salon. But also if another salon opens
- 30:20up, who cares? We don't need a monopoly, guys. No.
- 30:23And then, yeah, Melody is out near the lunch
- 30:27tables at Carlton and Emmett's out there. And
- 30:29he's like, I know I should be in trig right now.
- 30:31And she's like, I don't care. I'm not mad. Emmett,
- 30:33if you're already in trouble, maybe stop skipping
- 30:35class. I'm begging you to go to class for once.
- 30:38Please. He is never in class. No. And you've
- 30:42been failing. And he's been failing things. Yeah.
- 30:44And then she's like, I hope everything's okay.
- 30:47Maybe something good will come out of all this
- 30:49adversity. And maybe you've learned something
- 30:51from this. And he goes, what? I'll break up with
- 30:54Bay? Emmett. He's acting like such a teenager.
- 30:58He's a teenager. I know he is one. I feel at
- 31:01this point like he's making Melody's case too
- 31:03easy for her with the way he's behaving. But
- 31:05don't you think he's also thinking that himself?
- 31:08Thinking about breaking up with Bay? Yeah. No.
- 31:11No? I don't think so. He's been so distant. He's
- 31:15not talking to her. Yeah, but then at the end
- 31:16of the episode, he shares that it's, like, it's
- 31:18not you. It's, like, all hearing people. Like,
- 31:20I'm having really complicated feelings about
- 31:22hearing people. Sure. Like, it's really not.
- 31:25It's not that he's taking it out on Bay, but
- 31:27he just, like, really needs, like, space. And
- 31:29no one's giving it to him. Yeah, you're right.
- 31:32But I don't think he should be storming off from
- 31:35his mom and skipping class. Like, go to trig.
- 31:38Go to trig. I liked trig when I took it. And
- 31:41then Daphne comes to Bay. Bay's in the art studio
- 31:44aggressively painting. Painting a piece I think
- 31:47we will see shortly. Daphne tells Bay that she
- 31:49just saw Angelo. And basically says, like, honestly,
- 31:53I feel sorry for the guy. She says, I went there.
- 31:55And Bay's like, how did it go? And Daphne's like,
- 31:57honestly, why do you care what I think? Right.
- 32:00Why do you care so much? And Bay says. I don't
- 32:04know. He's my dad. Like, he's my bio dad. And
- 32:07you hit the jackpot with bio dads. Yeah, you
- 32:09hit the jackpot. And I want you to like him,
- 32:13basically. Yeah. I guess what goes unspoken in
- 32:16this scene is that, like, Daphne and Bay do care
- 32:18about each other. They do. And Bay doesn't say
- 32:21it, but she wants to be like, I want your, like,
- 32:24approval about this situation because I care
- 32:26about you. But then Daphne is like, oh, shit,
- 32:29you're right. I did hit the jackpot in the bio
- 32:31dad department. So she goes up to John, does
- 32:34not tell him about the grant thing at Buckner,
- 32:36but instead says, hey, I would love for you to
- 32:39coach me so I can improve. And so the coach will
- 32:42let me play. And he says, are you sure? Some
- 32:46ex players of mine have been known to call me
- 32:48a hard ass. It's cute. Also, he's reading Sports
- 32:50Illustrated when she walks up, which is just
- 32:53so funny to me. Because he likes sports, guys.
- 32:56Guys, that's his one personality trait. He's
- 32:58a good dad and he likes sports. And then Regina
- 33:02shows up at Angelo's apartment as well. Angelo
- 33:05just is opening that front door to all kinds
- 33:07of surprises today. He doesn't have a peephole.
- 33:10Also, he's home all day. Well, he doesn't have
- 33:12a job yet. What did he do for a living before?
- 33:15Why does he have so much money? I don't remember.
- 33:19We don't know. She goes to Angelo's apartment.
- 33:23She's like, I want to give the salon a shot.
- 33:24And they start like drawing and dreaming about
- 33:27what the salon is going to look like. And then
- 33:29Bay shows up to do a grand romantic gesture for
- 33:32Emmett at his house. And she begins by shining
- 33:35a flashlight in his window to get his attention,
- 33:37which I think is actually a pretty good idea.
- 33:39It's very smart. Yeah. That would work. And she's
- 33:41trying to like sign at him from far away. I like
- 33:43when he is. He says, like, I can't leave. I don't
- 33:47want to add to my rap sheet. And she's down below.
- 33:49She goes, was that rap sheet? And then she goes,
- 33:51that's kind of hot. Yeah, I love it when you
- 33:54talk con. But she is like, come on, like, you're
- 33:57not going to get in trouble. And then she fully
- 33:59takes him out of the house, which I thought he
- 34:02was grounded. He is grounded. He would be in
- 34:04big trouble if Melody heard. Thank God he has
- 34:06a deaf mom. This is just like when Bay, in like
- 34:10episode two, comes home. And John catches her
- 34:13sneaking back in and she goes, don't worry, I
- 34:15wasn't doing anything illegal. And she literally was.
- 34:17Well, this time she's not doing anything illegal.
- 34:19That's true, but she is still breaking the rule
- 34:21that Melody set. She's like, we're not going
- 34:23to get in trouble. But Emmett would get in trouble.
- 34:25Emmett would get in trouble if Melody found out.
- 34:28But I think maybe Bay is like, whatever, your
- 34:30mom's deaf. She's not going to hear you leave.
- 34:32I feel like she could feel his footsteps leave.
- 34:35What? Are the bedrooms right next to each other?
- 34:37I don't know the layout of this house. We don't
- 34:38know the layout of their house, but it is a two
- 34:40story. It is a two story. So, like, what? I
- 34:43feel like usually it's, like, the stairs go over
- 34:46the master bedroom. But he... Oh, yeah, I guess
- 34:49he went down the stairs. For some reason, I thought
- 34:50he went out the window. But he was on the second
- 34:53floor, so... Yeah. And there's no ladder. No,
- 34:56this isn't Twilight for real. He's not going
- 34:58in and out of the window. Anyway, she brings
- 35:00Emmett outside, and they're sitting at a bench
- 35:03in front of a blank wall. And she tells him,
- 35:06she understands he's mad at her and at the police,
- 35:09but she wants him to explain how he feels. And
- 35:11then this is when he says, sometimes I really
- 35:13hate hearing people. But I think Bay shows some
- 35:16growth here because I think in the past if Emmett
- 35:18said, I really hate hearing people, she would
- 35:21have said, I'm hearing. Yeah, he even says like,
- 35:24you're not going to want to hear what I have
- 35:25to say. But she fully accepts it. She accepts
- 35:28it. Her face changes. But she doesn't say anything.
- 35:31No, she just goes, okay. And he's like. Yeah.
- 35:34So, you know, that's you. But then she says,
- 35:38yeah, but no one is better at hating the world
- 35:41than me. Okay, rich white girl. I know. I'm like,
- 35:44okay. And then she's like, so how much more fun
- 35:46is it to do it together than apart? You and me
- 35:50against the world. Yeah. Which I think is, I
- 35:54don't know, it seems to make Emmett feel better.
- 35:55And then she pulls out a projector. And she projects
- 35:59the new piece that she was painting that's her
- 36:02and Emmett on the motorcycle. I don't know if
- 36:05we know that the motorcycle is named Ripley,
- 36:06but the motorcycle is named Ripley. Oh, yeah.
- 36:09Emmett's motorcycle's name is Ripley. Oh, that's
- 36:10right. They're on the motorcycle and the motorcycle
- 36:12is going through a wall and one of them is holding
- 36:14an axe. Yeah. So it's a new version of Axe Girl.
- 36:17Great job, Bay. Yeah. And it is projected, not
- 36:20spray painted on the wall. So it's legal. And
- 36:23she says, just because we can't do street art,
- 36:26doesn't mean we can't do street art. Emmett is
- 36:28delighted. Yeah. He loves this. It really works.
- 36:31So. Yeah. So. That's great. Good job, guys. And
- 36:34then back at the Kennish house, John is like,
- 36:36we got all the boxes from the lawyer that we
- 36:39just fired. Basically in Angelo's file for the
- 36:42last two years, he's dropped off the face of
- 36:44the earth. Yeah. John discovered that Amanda
- 36:47hired a private investigator to track down Angelo's
- 36:50history. And there's no record of him for the
- 36:52past two years. He vanished off the face of the
- 36:54earth. Yeah. What was he doing? We don't know.
- 36:56We don't know. We don't know how he got that
- 36:58money. We don't know how he's affording this
- 36:59apartment. Could this have to do with the fact
- 37:02that his credit card says Adam, but his ID says
- 37:05Angelo? Don't worry about it. Don't worry about
- 37:07it. And then, oh yeah. They're back at Angelo's
- 37:09and they're still, they're like reminiscing and
- 37:12talking about. The salon. What Regina's going
- 37:14to name her salon. This just feels so unearned.
- 37:17She's going to name it Gina's. She's going to
- 37:19name it Gina's. But he's kind of filling in some
- 37:21backstory to make us care more about this. He's
- 37:23like, you've always wanted to open your own salon.
- 37:26They make it sound like they've been together
- 37:27for 30 years. Yeah. And then they tell this story,
- 37:30which should be charming or is meant to be charming,
- 37:33but comes across so like terrible to me. They're
- 37:37at Regina's cousin's wedding. Well, the salsa
- 37:39music is playing on like his iPod or something.
- 37:41Yeah. And Regina's like, oh, my God, the song
- 37:43is I Like it Like That. They turn it up. And
- 37:46then Angelo's like, remember your cousin's wedding.
- 37:48And at Regina's cousin's wedding, this song played
- 37:52as a first dance song for the couple getting
- 37:56married. And Regina and Angelo didn't notice
- 37:58and got up and started dancing during the couple's
- 38:01first dance. Are they dumb? I would be. Furious.
- 38:05Furious. Well, she said her cousin didn't talk
- 38:06to her for months after. I don't think I would
- 38:08talk to her ever again. That's crazy behavior.
- 38:11Yes. Especially, I'm like, you didn't realize
- 38:13and then sit back down? Didn't you hear the emcee
- 38:16say... Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the
- 38:18first dance. Right. They're not deaf. They should
- 38:21have heard. Right. It made me hate them so much.
- 38:24And it was meant to be like romantic because
- 38:26then they start dancing and it's very, you know,
- 38:28they're both very good dancers. I was like, they're
- 38:30insufferable. The two of them. It just fades
- 38:33to black with them dancing together being insufferable.
- 38:37Yeah. I do not like them as a couple. As handsome
- 38:40as I find Angelo, like I'm not rooting for him
- 38:42and Regina. Not at all. They're so bad for each
- 38:45other. Also, I missed Wilke this episode. Oh
- 38:48my god, yeah. They can't afford Austin Butler
- 38:51and the actor that plays Angelo. I bet. Anyway,
- 38:55yeah. I don't know. I don't really have anything
- 38:57else to say. I was just, like, trying to tie
- 39:00the Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear to the episode
- 39:03itself. And I was like, are they taking it really
- 39:06literally because Emmett is deaf? Dude, yeah. But
- 39:10then I was like... He's struggling with pain,
- 39:12like the bruises from the handcuffs and a mental
- 39:14struggle after the trauma of being arrested.
- 39:16No, it's never that deep. It's never that deep
- 39:18with them. They were like, let's make it the
- 39:20ear one. When the song started playing between
- 39:23Angelo and Regina, I thought it was going to
- 39:25be that goddamn bird song for like the 45th time.
- 39:29I really thought. I'd be really excited. To hear
- 39:32it again. Guys, they bought the rights to a new
- 39:35song. Thanks for listening. Talk to you guys
- 39:38next week. Bye. Bye.
