- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Moore of the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Huskies go to.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Seven and three with air Force at home Senior Day
- 0:06Speaker 1: on the weekend Saturday Coach. Early in the season, we
- 0:12Speaker 1: talked about this, Yukon hadn't been taking them all away,
- 0:15Speaker 1: hadn't turned it over all year, which is a fabulous number.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Only one fumble, but the takeaway category starting to be
- 0:23Speaker 1: a factor now pretty much every week. Interceptions, fumble recoveries,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and that combined with the home field, the juice that
- 0:33Speaker 1: gets into a stadium, the energy from stuff like that
- 0:36Speaker 1: is something you can really carry around with you can't you.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, I'm not typically cognizant of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: crowd during a game because your focusing so much on
- 0:47Speaker 2: what's happening on the field. But when your defense gets
- 0:50Speaker 2: a big stop on fourth down, or they get a
- 0:52Speaker 2: takeaway or there, you know, the offense is about our
- 0:57Speaker 2: opponent's about to snap the ball, and the crowd comes
- 0:59Speaker 2: to life because they recognize it's an important situation. I mean, listen,
- 1:03Speaker 2: that's what home field advantage is, you know. I mean,
- 1:06Speaker 2: it's it's partnering with the crowd to make the environment
- 1:10Speaker 2: really really difficult for your opponent and then take an
- 1:13Speaker 2: advantage of it, you know, and then the energy that's
- 1:16Speaker 2: created when you do get a stop or you do
- 1:18Speaker 2: take the football away, and just how the crowd noise
- 1:21Speaker 2: elevates and the excitement in the stadium increases and your
- 1:24Speaker 2: players feel it. It's a partnership, you know. I mean,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it's me sound crazy, but it really is. And so
- 1:33Speaker 2: just a fun environment. But you know, Bob, Bob, sorry, Mike, Mike,
- 1:42Speaker 2: it's the number one critical variable to winning football games
- 1:48Speaker 2: is turnover ratio, you know, and so you have to
- 1:51Speaker 2: you have to hold the ball and hold on to
- 1:53Speaker 2: the ball, and you have to try to take it away.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And you know, that's just always a point emphasis for us.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it came to mind because that last play was
- 2:00Speaker 1: a defensive stop and a turnover, because you lost three
- 2:04Speaker 1: times on the road and I felt like, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 1: their home crowd, even though Rice didn't have a lot
- 2:09Speaker 1: of folks there, Delaware had a pretty good crowd and
- 2:11Speaker 1: Syracuse too. I mean, it matters you have those home
- 2:15Speaker 1: fans behind you, and then you get a little momentum
- 2:18Speaker 1: and you're the visitor. It's tough to overcome that. I
- 2:20Speaker 1: thought dude had trouble with that because they had the
- 2:24Speaker 1: lead so many times in the game, but they couldn't
- 2:26Speaker 1: finish it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think they did. I think that, I think, you know,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and I don't know how they feel, but I know
- 2:32Speaker 2: how I feel is that as you went through that game,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and like I said, I can't concentrate on the crowd
- 2:39Speaker 2: per se, but you do feel them. Is like, I
- 2:42Speaker 2: never felt like our players and I never felt like
- 2:46Speaker 2: our crowd had any doubt. And I felt like our
- 2:52Speaker 2: crowd realized that they were helping us win, they were
- 2:57Speaker 2: helping us overcome, like you said, the deficits that we
- 3:01Speaker 2: were facing in the second half, and that was pretty
- 3:04Speaker 2: freaking awesome. Okay, I mean that was pretty freaking awesome,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and it really matters, you know, And I tell you
- 3:10Speaker 2: this that you know, after the game, we were driving
- 3:12Speaker 2: home and Kathy said, I can't even believe the crowd
- 3:15Speaker 2: and I go, yeah, they really came alive there at
- 3:17Speaker 2: the end of the game. And he goes, she goes,
- 3:18Speaker 2: you're crazy. She goes, they were incredible the whole game. Incredible.
- 3:22Speaker 2: She goes, the band, the band was incredible the whole game.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I mean, they were so into it, and I'm like, god,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you know, I just I kind of noticed it that
- 3:30Speaker 2: last drive. But she always, she always kind of gives
- 3:32Speaker 2: me the vibe of the game, and she was like,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, she said, it couldn't have been any better.
- 3:37Speaker 2: It couldn't have been.
- 3:38Speaker 1: An It sounded about the rent. I mean, you put
- 3:40Speaker 1: thirty thousand in there. It sounds like fifty. I don't
- 3:42Speaker 1: know why. It's just the way the acoustics are in
- 3:45Speaker 1: that place. The takeaways obviously plus fourteen now number two
- 3:50Speaker 1: in the country. That's valuable. But sometimes, coach, you got
- 3:53Speaker 1: to make a call, and you did with a fake
- 3:56Speaker 1: punch that Alex Hanig took twenty six yards for a
- 4:01Speaker 1: big first down in the game. Is that a split
- 4:05Speaker 1: second decision? I mean, did you sit there and go, oh,
- 4:08Speaker 1: fourth down? All right, now we're going to try to
- 4:10Speaker 1: fake punt. It's got to be a split second kind
- 4:13Speaker 1: of a thought, isn't it.
- 4:14Speaker 2: No. I mean, it's you have to make that decision
- 4:18Speaker 2: in that instance, but you're thinking about it really throughout
- 4:21Speaker 2: the game, Like when is the we know we have
- 4:23Speaker 2: an opportunity here to convert a fake We felt like
- 4:29Speaker 2: we had it if we wanted it. Versus particular looks,
- 4:35Speaker 2: so you're trying to anticipate when they might give you
- 4:37Speaker 2: the look that you want. It's something that we've worked
- 4:40Speaker 2: on really all season, and so our players had a
- 4:43Speaker 2: high degree of confidence that they'd make it work, that
- 4:45Speaker 2: they'd execute, and the time just presented itself perfectly for
- 4:49Speaker 2: us to go ahead and give it a shot. And
- 4:52Speaker 2: our guys executed it. And that's just a credit to
- 4:55Speaker 2: Doug Share, our special teams coordinator, and it's a huge
- 4:58Speaker 2: credit to the players out on the field that made
- 5:01Speaker 2: it happen. Like like I said, they owned that situation
- 5:03Speaker 2: and they made it happen and it was pretty cool.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And then you know, you see six foot six, two
- 5:08Speaker 2: hundred and sixty eight pounds running at you, I don't
- 5:10Speaker 2: think you're really anxious to tackle that. So Alex, Alex
- 5:13Speaker 2: did a great job.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, the uh that play was huge. It really was
- 5:19Speaker 1: to me and I said this on the air. It
- 5:21Speaker 1: was like you pushing your chips to the center of
- 5:24Speaker 1: the table and telling the team we're here to win today.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We're not here to play field position now, We're here
- 5:30Speaker 1: to win. And it worked.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It was one of those things, Mike, like you talked
- 5:35Speaker 2: about you know, game management and knowing when I didn't
- 5:38Speaker 2: want the game to get to a two score game,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and I felt like at that point in time, had
- 5:43Speaker 2: we punted, there was an opportunity because they had some momentum.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Their quarterback was starting to play well, he's a damn
- 5:48Speaker 2: good quarterback, but he was starting to really kind of
- 5:49Speaker 2: catch fire. I was like, God, dang, cannot let it
- 5:52Speaker 2: at this point in the game and get to a
- 5:54Speaker 2: two score game. It's going to be really tough on
- 5:56Speaker 2: us if it does. And it's like, okay, let's roll,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and they gave us the look we wanted and executed
- 6:00Speaker 2: it was it was. It was a nice, nice deal.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Your offense we talked about Joe Fernano continues to spread
- 6:08Speaker 1: it around, Jim, that is that's classic. I mean, when
- 6:12Speaker 1: you can do that, that just puts so much pressure
- 6:15Speaker 1: on defenses, doesn't it. Six receivers caught balls as Joe
- 6:20Speaker 1: Fernano completed twenty seven passes.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know that's down for us. I think
- 6:25Speaker 2: Mike you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I
- 6:26Speaker 2: think UAB we had twelve different targets at least, so
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, six guys catching it. That's pretty good, but
- 6:33Speaker 2: just you know through the year that our ability to
- 6:37Speaker 2: spread the ball around and yet still see Skyler have
- 6:39Speaker 2: the success that he's having. I think it says a
- 6:41Speaker 2: lot about the creativity of the offense. But I also
- 6:44Speaker 2: think it says a lot about Joe. Our offensive line,
- 6:47Speaker 2: certainly our tight ends and backs blocking, but Joe and
- 6:53Speaker 2: our receivers just developing a real chemistry amongst each other
- 6:57Speaker 2: to have the confidence, Joe being able to read through
- 6:59Speaker 2: progression and get it where it's supposed to go.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And he had some pressure on him in that game.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Duke got to him. I think three times it felt
- 7:06Speaker 1: like early. We'll talk about that when we return Quick
