- 0:05We are Emily and Heather, 2 childhood friends who carry a
- 0:08mic into wild places like rivers, trails, and forests with
- 0:13wild people to host raw, honest conversations about adventure,
- 0:17healing, identity, and the transformative power of nature.
- 0:21In this season, we're centering the voices of people who call
- 0:24Southern Oregon home. Outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor
- 0:27professionals whose lives have been shaped, changed, or are
- 0:31continually influenced by time outside.
- 0:34Come along as together we go wildly.
- 0:37Hey, you wildly wonder. Thank you so very much for
- 0:41listening to the podcast. It means the world to us.
- 0:44OK, add a little mission. Pause the podcast right here.
- 0:48Make sure that you're subscribed to this guy.
- 0:50OK. It's going to be a fun time over
- 0:52here and if you so wish, we would love a five star review or
- 0:57whatever your heart's inclined to do.
- 0:59Also, leaving us a review truly helps the algorithm and we
- 1:03appreciate you doing that. Thank you so very much.
- 1:05Also, little tidbit over on Instagram, we're having so much
- 1:08fun over there. Lots of behind the scenes
- 1:10footage, some PO ES, just some fun unhinged content.
- 1:14If you love the pod, that's where we go wildly.
- 1:17For sure. So don't forget to follow us
- 1:19over there. OK, back to the show.
- 1:21Love it, we live. Oh, do you?
- 1:24I live like Callahan's. Oh no.
- 1:26Wow. Dope.
- 1:27So this is good of. Money is way cheaper.
- 1:29Yeah, yeah, with. Land.
- 1:31Yeah, I mean like I pay the same property taxes that I did on 1/4
- 1:36acre lot in Ashland and I have 10 acres.
- 1:38Wow. Oh, that's sick.
- 1:39That's great. So it's like, do you have a
- 1:41little mountain biking pump track there?
- 1:42Oh yeah, I got. I got.
- 1:44We should have, we should have just did that your place that
- 1:47would that would have been sick. Change location.
- 1:50Location. Next time, next time.
- 1:53Yeah, I I run EVO classes up there.
- 1:56OK, that's what I thought because I've seen, you know, the
- 1:58videos on your Instagram and stuff.
- 2:00I. Have an airbag?
- 2:01Yeah, sick. Probably 5 trails, about 150
- 2:08feet of elevation drop. That's sick.
- 2:11Yeah, so I can. Go out there on the E bike in
- 2:15like 40 minutes at the end of the day and get like.
- 2:17Just get your stove on sick. Or the acoustic if I'm feeling.
- 2:23Rowdy yeah, I feel like you want an actual workout.
- 2:27I don't know you can I try to explain to people like you can
- 2:29still get that on the E bikes, It just takes that edge off, I
- 2:34mean. Do you have to have the
- 2:36electricity running? You don't have to, but then it's
- 2:38like such a heavy bike. Really.
- 2:40Do it without, Yeah, I mean. Through Extra.
- 2:43Workout. Yeah.
- 2:46You guys probably going? To put me in front, I like to
- 2:47walk. Fast.
- 2:48OK, well yeah, get the hell back.
- 2:49Well. We'll, we'll.
- 2:51Introduce you. Yeah.
- 2:52Should we do that right now? We know what we're doing.
- 2:55OK Hey, good morning. Hello.
- 2:57After whatever time of day you're watching this today on Go
- 3:00Wildly, we are excited to be joined by Casey Bonds.
- 3:04Casey grew up in Marin County, California, the birth place of
- 3:08mountain biking. So it's probably no surprise
- 3:11that life on two wheels and in wild places has always been a
- 3:14part of his story. In 2016, he moved to Ashland
- 3:18with his wife and two daughters, drawn by the chance to raise his
- 3:22kids in a place where the outdoors is part of everyday
- 3:24life. Hell yeah.
- 3:26Where we are today? Yep.
- 3:27Yep. When he's not out trail running,
- 3:29mountain biking, hiking, split boarding, backpacking or
- 3:33belaying his kids while they climb, it's a long list of
- 3:36activities. I don't.
- 3:37Really like rock climbing. You like to stay on the ground,
- 3:42That's fair. Casey is helping to build the
- 3:44next generation of riders. He Co founded the Ashland Devo
- 3:49Youth Mountain Biking program in 2019 after first launching the
- 3:53Rogue Composite Youth Mountain Bike team a couple years
- 3:57earlier. In 2018, Casey stepped away from
- 4:01his career as a firefighter to stay home with his daughters and
- 4:04pour his energy into building youth cycling opportunities in
- 4:07the Rogue Valley while his wife continued her work as a labor
- 4:10and delivery nurse. Casey's story is about family,
- 4:14trails and community, and we're excited to talk with him about
- 4:17building something meaningful in On Two Wheels right here in
- 4:20Southern Oregon. Hell yeah.
- 4:21Two wheels, what you like. And today we are in Ashland.
- 4:29We are heading up the Acid Castles trail up above Ashland,
- 4:35OR and it's a beautiful sunny day so these are some of the
- 4:40best views of Ashland. Yeah, 100%, yeah, yeah, Yeah,
- 4:45you can. It's kind of the secret view
- 4:47spot is across the freeway, but there's not too many trails.
- 4:50There's a couple like the city owns some land over there.
- 4:52You can kind of poach a little bit, but that's where you get
- 4:54like the classic shots from. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:57This is this. Is probably my favorite though,
- 5:00yeah. Because it's so accessible from
- 5:02town. Accessible and like you get into
- 5:04the watershed and there's bigger, bigger fir and pine
- 5:08trees and the views are obstructed a little more and
- 5:11then this little like scrubby oak, kind of like madrone zone
- 5:17that's a little lower elevation makes it nice, nice viewpoints
- 5:21yeah. And all the trees are dying.
- 5:22And the more you cut them, the better views get a.
- 5:25Plus side aside on Ashland. Yeah.
- 5:31Well, kind of just a little bit of luck.
- 5:35My in laws have a ranch in Roseburg OR so about what 2
- 5:40hours north of here. And when they moved here or to
- 5:46Roseburg, we were still in the Bay Area and we would drive up
- 5:49to visit them. And this was always like the
- 5:51stopping point to, you know, get, get out and rest.
- 5:57OK, Get out and you know, rest the legs or rest the whatever
- 6:03muscles you use when you drive. To use the mind.
- 6:07The mind. So we'd stop in Lithia and walk
- 6:11around and get some get some healthy food from the Co-op, you
- 6:16know, and whatever. It's kind of like this little
- 6:20Oasis on the drive where we could actually get some pretty
- 6:24good hangout time. And yeah, we liked it so much
- 6:30that me and my wife took an anniversary trip up here and
- 6:33spent some more time and we were like, wow, wouldn't this be a
- 6:36cool place? Sure.
- 6:39To. Arrange to raise our kids and
- 6:41like, you know, be a part of like the trails were amazing.
- 6:46I would bring bikes up and go, go go for a quick ride and we
- 6:52kind of looked at each other like, wow, that might just be
- 6:54crazy enough to crazy. Enough to.
- 6:57Pull off Yeah. So I was a firefighter at the
- 6:59time and firefighters were. Urban firefighter.
- 7:03I was at the time, yeah. OK, wait, you don't have a
- 7:07mustache? Well, I don't work there
- 7:09anymore. That's a requirement.
- 7:12Yeah, you got to filter out that smoke, right?
- 7:15Is that is that what they say? I think like in the 1800s,
- 7:18that's what they said, and then it stayed a tradition.
- 7:21Yeah, yeah, we have some gnarly mustaches on the street anyways.
- 7:28Mustache competitions. Yeah, here and there over the
- 7:33years. I've had one a couple times in
- 7:36my life, but I've never had like the curly Q1.
- 7:40Where they really go off pretty hard to.
- 7:42Maintain I think. Yeah, I know.
- 7:44You got to have the wax. You got to have the.
- 7:45Wax, I love this mustache conversation.
- 7:48Actually, I have a mustache. Oh yeah, your finger.
- 7:53My finger. Cool, cool.
- 7:56You took an anniversary. Trip.
- 7:57Oh yeah, yeah. So we anyways firefighting the
- 8:00schedule kind of allows you to live far away from where you
- 8:03work. A lot of times, really.
- 8:05And so it's like. Why is that?
- 8:08Though because you work blocks of days, so I would work like
- 8:12the normal schedule would be two days on, four days off.
- 8:16But you work 48 hours, right? Like you're waking up at night
- 8:18and doing it all. So then you do trades and you
- 8:22can work like 4 days on, 8 days off.
- 8:25And then it becomes really doable to live far away.
- 8:30Because I worked in West Sacramento and don't want to
- 8:33offend anybody, but I wanted to live as far away as I could from
- 8:36Sacramento and this was a good fit anyway, so I was able to do
- 8:45that. So right up here, we're going
- 8:47to. Cut back under that.
- 8:48Go up here if we can. And you just live at the fire
- 8:51station when you're working. So there was no.
- 8:53So it was like a four hour drive, you know, 4 hour drive, 4
- 8:57* a month to get from here to there, which I thought was
- 9:04doable. So are we going this way?
- 9:05Yeah, we'll go that way. Yeah.
- 9:07So we made the move. I guess that's it in a nutshell.
- 9:12We were trying to get away from the traffic and kind of like.
- 9:19California prices California. Vibe, I mean, I grew up there,
- 9:25but I wanted to be kind of closer to bigger mountains and
- 9:33activities than I had. We had good stuff in the Bay
- 9:37Area, but it's all kind of like, look, don't touch like you walk
- 9:41around the reservoirs, but you better not swim in them or.
- 9:44Yeah, yeah. No driving on the fire roads,
- 9:46that kind of thing. And the access was just so
- 9:50incredible here. That was a big draw.
- 9:54Why? Do you have an idea or know why
- 9:57it was so limited there in that way like?
- 10:00Just a lot of like. Just too many people.
- 10:02Or most historical. I think it's historical, just
- 10:11kind of the, I don't know, the vibe of California is a lot of
- 10:14like manage over management and. Well, there's a lot of people.
- 10:18I feel like it's more. People.
- 10:20You have to regulate more when there's so many more looking.
- 10:23For. Yeah, but then, you know, if you
- 10:25don't regulate it, then you wind up with like trash dumps
- 10:28everywhere. Right, right.
- 10:29That's. So.
- 10:31But I felt like it went too far the other way.
- 10:33Like there's barely any mountain bike legal single track in Marin
- 10:38County. What?
- 10:40Because the horse lobbyists. Are so.
- 10:45Huge and very well funded. Whoa.
- 10:48So historically they've just sued every project there until
- 10:51it doesn't happen. That's sad.
- 10:54So yeah, did you? Say the.
- 10:57Forest or. Forks Horse.
- 10:59Yeah. Nay, they say.
- 11:02Nay, damn. Yeah.
- 11:05I didn't realize that that was such like a big pool.
- 11:10That's such a big pool. I.
- 11:12Mean it's still like the same amount of people relative to
- 11:16mountain bikers and hikers, which is like, I don't want to
- 11:20throw out the wrong number, but .5% of the user group maybe
- 11:25yeah, maybe less, but I've. Just been.
- 11:31Yeah, that's a good view. Yeah.
- 11:34So kind of looking around and thinking like, I want someone
- 11:40with better access, less traffic.
- 11:46Four Seasons was kind of a drop. Four Seasons.
- 11:48You know, I lived the day trip to Tahoe life for several years.
- 11:55Heck yeah. Which is a lot of driving, but
- 11:57people in the Bay Area just do it.
- 11:59And then once you live somewhere where you don't have to, you're
- 12:01like, Oh my God, I can't believe I did that.
- 12:03Yeah. Yeah, I'm going down for.
- 12:08I'll have to ask you where some good places are to actually ride
- 12:11now that I know it's so limited. There's spots, but for sure.
- 12:14Yeah, my girlfriend, she lives in Concord, so like right
- 12:18outside of Oakland. Yeah, she lives on this Butte
- 12:21area. Like the backing, like her house
- 12:23kind of backs up to this like kind of like Cathedral Hills
- 12:26vibe. Yeah, I don't know that sound
- 12:28very well. The other thing about the area
- 12:30is that like you are like sucked into your zone.
- 12:35So like that, I probably grew up like 25 miles from Concord, but
- 12:41I don't know if I've ever like been there other than driving
- 12:43through or like riding the trails.
- 12:45It's not like, oh, I'm just going to go to mountain on the
- 12:47road. Right, yeah, 'cause it'll.
- 12:49Probably take 3 hours to get to Concord most times.
- 12:52Yeah, I don't know. We're going to try to go ride, I
- 12:54don't know, somewhere. Maybe in the Santa Cruz
- 12:56Mountains too. We'll see.
- 12:57What? What's.
- 12:58Yeah, maybe. Potentially.
- 13:00That'll be cool. I haven't.
- 13:01Yeah, I've ridden there like once or twice, but mostly all my
- 13:04riding was in Marin and Sonoma counties, OK, down there.
- 13:09So you started mountain biking pretty young?
- 13:11Yeah, super young, like 10 maybe.
- 13:16OK my dad was a big like OG mountain biker.
- 13:21He's since kind of switched to hiking just cuz he's getting
- 13:25older and still staying. Active.
- 13:28Though super active, he just did the JMT like 2 years ago.
- 13:31Wow. That's awesome.
- 13:32That's gonna be me. Yeah.
- 13:34Yeah, I have some Airbnb guests right now that are in their
- 13:38probably like early 70s that are here visiting to train for doing
- 13:43the PCT. Oh, nice.
- 13:45That's. Just.
- 13:46That acid inspiring. Yeah, my dad, he turned 70 in
- 13:50November, and last June he came up and myself, my daughters and
- 13:55him, we all did the Ashland Hill climb.
- 13:57Cool. So it's 3 generations.
- 13:58On the hill climb that's. Awesome, that's sick.
- 14:00Yeah. So.
- 14:04So your dad got you into mountain biking young?
- 14:07He set a good example. He would ride his bike to work
- 14:11from Marin to San Francisco and instead of just like commuting,
- 14:15he would like ride up and over Mount Tam on a mountain bike.
- 14:18So like, his commute was literally a mountain bike ride.
- 14:21And it didn't have to be, which I grew to really appreciate as I
- 14:25got older. But yeah, so occasion, I mean,
- 14:28it feels like every Sunday morning, but it was probably
- 14:31like, 4. Like, he would wake me up early,
- 14:34like, you know, before the sun came up, and we would go do a
- 14:37full ride and come back before everybody in my family woke up,
- 14:41like my siblings. And I just remember, like,
- 14:45instantly thinking that was the coolest thing.
- 14:47Like you're out, you're out in these nature environments and
- 14:51like looking at these reservoirs and like the fogs coming up.
- 14:54And we had like a log where it was like hot chocolate log where
- 14:57he'd like pull out the hot chocolate and you know.
- 14:59It's just like, that's cool. He's really creating those core
- 15:02memories. Yeah, and he like, you know, now
- 15:04we know, like, we can like, look at like an influencer or
- 15:07whatever and be like, well, that's a good idea.
- 15:08But like, he was just shooting from the hip.
- 15:09He's like, well, this log looks good for hot chocolate.
- 15:12Like yeah, no, he's an OG. Yeah.
- 15:15So. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:18So yeah, I started riding super young.
- 15:20I, I had a group of probably like four or five friends who
- 15:24were into it as well. And then then like right after
- 15:27that, a couple years later, it became like the freedom of like,
- 15:30oh, now I'm 5th, 6th, 7th grader and I can get on this machine
- 15:34and like go away from everybody else with my friends and just
- 15:41experience, you know, the independence.
- 15:46And that was like a big thing. We hear that a lot.
- 15:49That's the trend in the Elise, Larry's and some, I think
- 15:52someone else's. It's like it's an independent
- 15:54machine. Yeah, Someone shows you how to
- 15:56do it, and then you do it and you're responsible for, you
- 16:00know, everything on your own. And I remember like really
- 16:04early, you know, like when you live in Moran, you and you ride
- 16:08bikes. You either get bored of riding
- 16:12mountain bikes or you start poaching trails because you get
- 16:15sick of fire roads all the time. So I.
- 16:18What's poaching trails mean? So poaching trails is like
- 16:21trails that you're not supposed to ride your bike on, but
- 16:24sometimes they're really fun to ride your bike on.
- 16:27And it's definitely like in the culture in Marin, because
- 16:31there's been no path to access. So it's kind of like, well.
- 16:36You make your own path. Yeah.
- 16:37And you know, as an 11 or 12 year old, you're not thinking
- 16:40about repercussions or anything. So yeah, we were out there as
- 16:43like little groms, just like ripping through Madrone Canyon
- 16:47and the Kent Woodlands and, and, and like, not a fear in the
- 16:53world of what happens if you get caught and never did, but
- 16:58definitely pretty cool. You feel like you're in Star
- 17:01Wars, you know, riding through the redwoods and.
- 17:04Yeah. Yeah, it's just like instant
- 17:07hooked, you know, I went away from it in high school.
- 17:12I play team sports. I've always been like pretty big
- 17:15on the values of team sports. But yeah, I probably when I was
- 17:2219, I got back into it with my brother who was younger.
- 17:26He was probably 14 at the time. We started riding a lot more and
- 17:28then, yeah, I never really looked back from there, just
- 17:31kept riding more and more. I was going to ask if you were
- 17:34the only one of your siblings that your dad introduced you to
- 17:37or? Yeah, my brother as well, My
- 17:39sister never really got into it. She was like competitive
- 17:41volleyball player and played in college and like that was like
- 17:44kind of all she did. But my brother got into it and
- 17:50maybe not as heavy as I did, but yeah, he still comes up and like
- 17:55he can hop on a bike and he's like he rips the the skills when
- 17:58you learn. Something.
- 17:59Yeah. It's like riding a bike.
- 18:02It's like you just go, you know? Yeah, I'm.
- 18:05Trying to get Emily on a bike. Yeah, because she we can.
- 18:08Walk and talk about that, yeah. Never.
- 18:11Too. I know that's what I tell her
- 18:12this. Really cool quote.
- 18:13It was like so simple but so good and I'm going to butcher it
- 18:17because. It's like.
- 18:18The best memory, but it was basically like, you can think
- 18:23you're too old to start something, but you'll never be
- 18:26as young as you are right now. So start it, you know.
- 18:30Yeah, it's more like just a fear.
- 18:32A lot of I have like a weird fear and anxiety around it.
- 18:36Yeah, I like very simply like crashed my bike into the curb at
- 18:42my front door when I was like 6 years old and slammed my face on
- 18:46the handlebars not to do it. And that created a trauma around
- 18:49it. Yeah.
- 18:50I you're open to it. You said that very open.
- 18:53So I just need to take you out. Cruiser.
- 18:55On a flat path, I'm shaking yeah.
- 18:58For the. 1st 30 minutes and like I had I got a bike I'm super.
- 19:04Uncomfortable. Well, I would just take you to a
- 19:05school. Yeah.
- 19:06And we would just ride very casually until.
- 19:10We start all our younger kid programs in vivo at schools.
- 19:15Yeah, flat ground. Yeah, very flat.
- 19:18You know, some people have the attitude of like, oh, they'll
- 19:20figure it out to send them out there, but that's a recipe for.
- 19:24Disaster and the trauma that comes on.
- 19:27I know multiple people. I just who did we talk to?
- 19:30Was it me or somebody? I I just recently talked to
- 19:32somebody too that just had a couple bad experiences on a bike
- 19:35and they're like, I'm never going to get on a bike again.
- 19:37They're like I'm. Super open and into overcoming
- 19:41fears and facing challenges and knowing that I've done other
- 19:47hard things and things that other people would be like.
- 19:50I could never fucking do that right.
- 19:52But I do really easily. So I'm into it, but it's it just
- 19:58hasn't moved up on my priority list of.
- 20:01Well, it's been winter. Too many.
- 20:04Too many other fun things. You know, you know, it's funny.
- 20:06It's like I feel how you feel about Vikings with river river
- 20:10rafting. Interesting.
- 20:11OK, so. White water, yeah.
- 20:13Kindred opposite spirit. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:16Like, I respect it and appreciate it and I, I wish I
- 20:20could, you know, show my girls because I think they'd have a
- 20:22blast. But like, it's absolutely.
- 20:25Terrifying. How old are your girls?
- 20:2713 and 12. We got a kayak camp, river
- 20:30rafting. Yeah, we got a kayak camp, a
- 20:33youth kayak camp coming up. Yeah, there's a.
- 20:35New kayak camp happening in the the least area in June.
- 20:40I think I can. Do a shout out.
- 20:43I think I'm going to get through.
- 20:44In June. Three, that we were trying to
- 20:46find some sort of camp. Actually.
- 20:48Oh, perfect. This may be serendipitous.
- 20:51It could be that was my I mean, I grew up on the river.
- 20:54My parents were river guides in the 70s.
- 20:56Oh cool. So it's like all we ever.
- 20:58Did yeah, yeah, yeah. And then?
- 21:00I did a youth kayak camp when I was 10 and was into it for a
- 21:06while and then I got more interacting and now I'm getting
- 21:09back into kayaking and it's like riding a bike.
- 21:13Single. Little.
- 21:15Short. Yeah, and, and really like the
- 21:18skills. The paddling skills have come
- 21:20back very, very naturally, the rolling skills a little harder.
- 21:26Well, no. In fact, Ashland funds a coupe
- 21:28collector on trails, no? That's somebody's coming back.
- 21:33Yeah. Loop trails people.
- 21:35People are coming back. For it, but hopefully you moved
- 21:37it over, they might not see it. No, don't worry.
- 21:42I always remember. And if they forget, they pick up
- 21:45two piles next time they're out somewhere.
- 21:47Yeah. 100% anyways. Yeah.
- 21:51So back to you siblings getting into biking.
- 21:55Dad got your other brother into biking open up.
- 21:58His sister and your child were still kind of in the like, what
- 22:04was it like growing up? I don't know if my dad got my
- 22:07other brother in the biking. I think it might have been at
- 22:08that point he was 5 or 6 years younger and I think like more
- 22:14there were just more kids biking than like the.
- 22:18Technology this time. I also feel like biking is just
- 22:22like as a kid, like that's what you do, like you have a bike
- 22:26and. You're always biking around town
- 22:27anyways. I'm.
- 22:29Pretty sure my sister. Was doing that.
- 22:30I just don't think she ever comes.
- 22:33But she's not in biking. Special like, yeah, I think that
- 22:36really is like a very link essential.
- 22:39Childhood like you bike, you live.
- 22:41Like somewhere like this where the trails are right there as a
- 22:45kid, it's going to be really hard for you to get that
- 22:48experience. True, you can get the bike
- 22:51experience, but like this, this is like very unique.
- 22:55It is, I agree. And Grants Pass has it now too.
- 23:01Yep, which? Is super.
- 23:03Cool. Yeah, it's really common.
- 23:05We do, literally with the Dollar Mountain baby.
- 23:09We're more. We still favor Cathedral.
- 23:13Yeah. Well.
- 23:14It's an intro. Yeah, there's some nice little
- 23:17lines too, some cool little trails, but that's just the one
- 23:21we like really crank out miles in for a group ride because
- 23:26there's no really barrier to entry as far as like a steep
- 23:30climb up. Yeah.
- 23:32Summertime, we'll switch over to motor and I'm trying to get Sean
- 23:37on board also with going to dollar, but Sean's not super
- 23:43into the steep climb in the beginning and they have like.
- 23:48More trails planned, would they have?
- 23:49Like could they reroute the climb trail?
- 23:52I don't know. I might.
- 23:54I don't know. I was thinking about doing a
- 23:57survey, community survey to see what everybody, or at least like
- 24:01the mountain bikers thought about it.
- 24:03Sure. Which I think would be
- 24:04beneficial because even Marshall said he's like, oh, that climb
- 24:09trail in the beginning is a little rough.
- 24:11Was it Marshall? I think so, yeah.
- 24:13Yeah. You spent some time out there.
- 24:16So one thing we'll just keep a heads up on the blind.
- 24:18Corners. Bikes.
- 24:20Very high speed, one of my favorite.
- 24:24Cool, that's what we want. So here's the acid capsules.
- 24:30Oh my gosh. Cool.
- 24:32That's. The famous.
- 24:34This this is all poison oak coming up.
- 24:36Oh, yeah, it is. It doesn't have a freeze yet.
- 24:38Yeah. But I've already got some.
- 24:41I'm not allergic. You already got like you're
- 24:43battling. Oh my God.
- 24:45Yeah, so there is a clearing up there or we can check out these
- 24:48rocks that one might have a tree falling, but there are some open
- 24:52spaces down here if you want to explore around or we can just go
- 24:55up to the. We can just go up to the thing,
- 24:59Jing. You, I mean you want to see the
- 25:01rocks. You've never been to the rocks.
- 25:04Well, I'm just my shoes. And a proper.
- 25:06Footwear, I really am not. I can I can appreciate them from
- 25:10here though. Yeah, it's good views.
- 25:12You're kind of I'm going to go cut that tree up, but looks.
- 25:15Like that tree is. Falling out.
- 25:17We've had some pretty epic storms the last couple weeks.
- 25:21Yeah, finally, yeah. Tune into our YouTube to see
- 25:25what this looks like. Well, I well, video on Spotify
- 25:32too. Yeah, but you get a better, I
- 25:34feel like you get a better viewer experience on YouTube.
- 25:37For sure, for sure. Higher quality, bigger
- 25:39potential, and most people aren't listening to Spotify on
- 25:42their computer. See up.
- 25:44Into the moving drainage. There.
- 25:46Yeah, I was just telling Emily on the way up I was like, oh, if
- 25:51I could get Sean to move to Ashland or just close.
- 25:55Like I love it here. Yeah, it's.
- 25:59I think we already talked about it, but like the for me it's
- 26:02like the winters and not having the fog.
- 26:04Because. Growing up in the Bay Area, it
- 26:07was foggy a lot. We have a ton of fog that
- 26:10settles in our little bowl of the valley and GP, it's, it's
- 26:13almost like, I don't know, it's almost right.
- 26:18Huh it? Affects.
- 26:19It can affect your mood, yeah. Oh girl.
- 26:22We've had many lengthy discussions about.
- 26:26The. The way that the fog affects the
- 26:27mood and how either you succumb to it or.
- 26:30You have to. Work really hard to.
- 26:31That's the. Thing, yeah, overcome it.
- 26:33It's same with like winter in general.
- 26:35Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:36So like, I love winter. My wife is not a snow sports
- 26:39person. Yeah, you either have to have an
- 26:43activity. That.
- 26:45Brings you life. Yeah, let's do it.
- 26:47Brings you life at that time or you have to accept that we are
- 26:52bears and we must also hibernate, yeah.
- 26:56Maybe it's a time to chill. For sure and.
- 26:59We just have to like, settle down.
- 27:00The days are short, so like, you feel it's like 4:00 and you
- 27:04skied, you know, all day for me. And I'm like, wow, it's getting
- 27:08dark. Like my day's over?
- 27:09Yeah, well done. I can go relax. 9:00 And I'm
- 27:12like, I need to be doing something.
- 27:14I'm so tired. Yeah, I I like that.
- 27:18Also about winter, that it's just like, OK, yeah, it's dark,
- 27:21time to chill. Yep.
- 27:22Yep. There's no reason to be read a
- 27:27good book cool, drink some hot chocolate that's.
- 27:31Good. Yeah, totally.
- 27:32I I don't know, I had a pretty hard time with the fog this
- 27:34year, but I also. Well, the less rainy it is, the
- 27:39foggier it's gonna be. Yeah.
- 27:40So that's like the inverse. Right.
- 27:43And where I live it's we don't even get the ashen fog where I
- 27:46live, which is pretty. Sweet.
- 27:47You're above it. Yep.
- 27:48Nice. Yeah.
- 27:49And we pay for the extra commute time.
- 27:53Yeah, but pretty nice to have loose guy got my girls off.
- 27:57I'm like, have fun in the frog right back up to my place and
- 28:01it's like do. You have to commute in every
- 28:04day. Yeah, yeah, we're like 1617
- 28:07minutes from their school. OK, but it's.
- 28:09A really pretty drive. There is a bus but it rolls
- 28:12through it like 720. I don't feel like being that
- 28:15mean to my kids. Yeah, that's nice of you.
- 28:17And then it comes back at like 445.
- 28:19That's a lot of bus time. Yeah, that's a long day.
- 28:22That's a work. Day, it's not worth it for a
- 28:24child. And like we work schedules, we
- 28:27kind of designed our, our schedules around, you know,
- 28:33having one parent around the kids all the time.
- 28:36So I'm not just going to sit there and wait for the bus like
- 28:39I'm going to go if it was 10 minutes, I I worked, but it's an
- 28:43hour. Yeah, you know, yeah.
- 28:44I'd rather hang out with them. That's good quality, valuable
- 28:49time. Yeah, 100%.
- 28:50Every minute that you have with them is, yeah, precious.
- 28:54Can I help set one up? Or yeah, hold on, I'm just
- 28:57getting this, getting this dialed in a little bit, setting
- 29:06up all chairs thing is getting dialed.
- 29:09Marks are. That's where the bikes.
- 29:12There's a trail right here and it's really high speed.
- 29:14I don't know if we'll see anybody.
- 29:16It's probably kind of rare, but they'll see us.
- 29:20OK, are they going off the side here randomly?
- 29:23Just stop. Slow down here that'd.
- 29:26Be scary. Yeah, down there, Yeah, you get
- 29:32poisoned. Up.
- 29:34Yeah, you roll. End up poisoned up.
- 29:41Ching Ching, Oh my God, I got. Bit yeah, it does.
- 29:45It is. A girl not that bad compared to
- 29:47how I would normally get it. I used to get it really bad and
- 29:51I just wildland firefighting. For.
- 29:54Like a decade almost, and I would just get it.
- 29:58But I liked the job so much I didn't care.
- 30:00I used to put my boots on with latex gloves.
- 30:03Yeah, yeah. Every morning.
- 30:05Did you? Ever find any kind of trick to
- 30:09reduce your reaction or? Yeah, I, I think they're all
- 30:15like anecdotal, but gosh, what would I do?
- 30:19So like immediately after you think you've been in it, you
- 30:22have to take like. A cold shower A.
- 30:25Cold shower, like nothing hot, you know, because the heat will
- 30:29spread it early. But then I found that after it's
- 30:32gotten, I never found the heat to like, spread it after a
- 30:36couple days, Yeah. Once it's been.
- 30:38Washed off it the only way that the only place that it shows up
- 30:42is where it already originally touched.
- 30:43Yeah, exactly. And I think a lot of people
- 30:46don't. Believe that a lot of people
- 30:48think that the oil in the rash continues to spread.
- 30:52I'll do it. And it's it's not like that.
- 30:55It's only the initial contact and then once it's been unless
- 30:59you keep making contact with the oil.
- 31:01Or unless you get it like systemically, yeah, that's the
- 31:04curveball. Yeah.
- 31:06But I never I had I knew people who would get like have to go
- 31:10get like shots the. Prednisone shot.
- 31:13Or I used to get Prednisone but no for for like when you inhale
- 31:16it. Oh.
- 31:17That's my darkest, deepest fear. I don't know what it's called,
- 31:21but some sort of like nebulizer treatment, OK, that would that
- 31:27would do that. And I never had to do that
- 31:30luckily. But for me, the hot, the boiling
- 31:33hot water. So good, yeah.
- 31:36Yeah, it feels so good. Yeah.
- 31:37Oh yeah. Oh yeah, best feeling in the
- 31:39world. Like I'm experiencing those
- 31:41twice a day. God, it's sweet.
- 31:42It's. Almost worth getting a little
- 31:43patch. Yeah.
- 31:46Yeah, especially depending on where it's located.
- 31:49You can feel better. I used to get it like I had it
- 31:54once where it was like just baubles of skin and I had like a
- 31:58month worth worth of like once it was healing the.
- 32:01You know. Yeah.
- 32:04I like, I want to show you a picture of my last like really
- 32:07bad reaction or yeah, my last breakout because it was.
- 32:11Like, so I remember a doctor telling me like, this is just
- 32:13going to get worse. Before it gets better.
- 32:16Well, they told me it would just never get better like my.
- 32:18But then no, not, not at the time, but like over my lifetime,
- 32:22like I'm not going to build an immunity.
- 32:24But then I did. Oh, and maybe I was just in it
- 32:27more than they. Thought I would be.
- 32:29Because I don't get it like I used to.
- 32:32Because yeah, usually it is like a the more you're exposed to it,
- 32:36your immunity reduces. Yeah, but.
- 32:41So when I did wild land on hand crew, we were all a bunch of
- 32:46dummies, you know, in our early 20s.
- 32:48And one prank we would do is you'd take like, a in Marin,
- 32:52there'd be the stocks of poison oak.
- 32:54Oh, no, Yeah. That's just my face, part of it.
- 32:57That's a good one. Then it was also when.
- 32:59You wake up and you're like, my eye won't.
- 33:01Open my eye wouldn't my eye won't wouldn't open.
- 33:03It was both of my hands. Oh, so shiny.
- 33:07Yeah, yeah. I've never gotten poisonous.
- 33:10November of 2023 can. You see that?
- 33:14That's both my hands. Oh God.
- 33:17And I couldn't. I couldn't do anything for two
- 33:20weeks. I couldn't use my face, I
- 33:23couldn't use my hands. I just had to like Lay.
- 33:27Oh my God, Jesus. Yeah, sorry, trigger warning.
- 33:33Let me see it. Oh my God, Emily.
- 33:35And, and it was like on the back of my neck, it was up my arms.
- 33:40My dog had gotten in it. And then he laid on my pillow,
- 33:44and then I laid on my. Pillow, dude, that's rough.
- 33:46Yeah. We would take these huge stalks
- 33:48and we would he'd walk up behind like somebody on the crew and
- 33:52just stamp their back with it. Oh my God.
- 33:55That's evil. No, they'd be wearing, like,
- 33:58their yellow Nomex, you know? And then when you clean the
- 34:00Nomex, it leaves a chemical ring around it.
- 34:03So like, all I remember is that these black stamps of different
- 34:07diameter circles on our backs every once in a while, if you
- 34:10were super sensitive, it would get into your skin.
- 34:12Yeah. And then you'd have like, this
- 34:14red rash of a, like a ring, like a massive ringworm, Right?
- 34:19Yeah. And yeah, we they told us to
- 34:22stop doing. That that'd.
- 34:23Be me. I've gotten it before.
- 34:24I went to a show out at the Applegate Lodge and I hugged
- 34:28somebody and like 3 days later I woke up with poison oak all
- 34:32along the inside of both of my arms and down one side of my
- 34:35face and neck which had been the hug.
- 34:39It's like that's fucked up. So I I stopped hugging hippies
- 34:43at the Applegate Lodge. Yeah, yeah, you probably saved
- 34:46yourself from other potential contagions as well.
- 34:50Quite possibly. There we go.
- 34:51It's better here. Is that cool?
- 34:53Perfect. Yeah.
- 34:55Go pee pee. We're gonna get the pee pee
- 34:56sound on the It's going to pick me.
- 35:01Up pretty far from that, Mike's phone is hot and if we just talk
- 35:05well while he's peeing and does it sound.
- 35:08Like a babbling. Brook.
- 35:10You didn't know this, but actually there is a beautiful
- 35:13Creek with a waterfall just trickling just.
- 35:17Right off the to. Actually ride a bus.
- 35:24There come two people. Hi.
- 35:30OK. Just looks really.
- 35:34Hard. To pedal uphill, it is.
- 35:37It's a workout. It's a workout.
- 35:40Well you can get there from back roads too and just come down
- 35:42this make a loop. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:44This is my seat. Yeah, you're in the hot seat.
- 35:46Middle, middle. All right.
- 35:50Yes, welcome. Welcome to the Go Wildly
- 35:54podcast. This has been great so far.
- 35:57My generator is some good. Content.
- 35:59You know, I feel so self. Yeah, you are.
- 36:01I look just like an idiot. No, no.
- 36:03Most of most of our like summer recorded episodes.
- 36:06Are all on the hot. OK.
- 36:08If you feel self-conscious about it, we could put it.
- 36:10Now that we're not walking, you could put it on your.
- 36:14Yeah, Here, we'll do that. I'll help you.
- 36:17Because you can see it. Huh.
- 36:19Yeah. In your peripherals looks.
- 36:21Like I'm like an art project because.
- 36:24You are. There we go, doodles.
- 36:26They're perfect. Perfection.
- 36:27Cool. I have to admit that I've never,
- 36:32never gotten poison oak. Ever.
- 36:35I don't know why I. Probably don't get it then.
- 36:36Yeah, because my wife doesn't get it either.
- 36:38Yeah, I mean, maybe I've had like a little scratchy or
- 36:41something one time, but like also I've never like rolled
- 36:44around in it to know me. Either.
- 36:47Yeah, I figured like my wife would have got it from.
- 36:50You having it? Yeah, over the.
- 36:51Years. And managing the clothes,
- 36:53laundry, he's. Just and so my younger my older
- 36:56daughter doesn't get it that bad and my younger daughter gets
- 36:59covered and my younger daughter is more looks like a young me
- 37:03and then my older 1 looks more like you.
- 37:05Know genetics. Yeah, well, he just doesn't get
- 37:08it. I thought that maybe I like
- 37:10don't get it because my dad doesn't get it, which is like a
- 37:13thing. But he said that he doesn't get
- 37:15it because growing up he drank goat milk that the goats would
- 37:19eat. But then but that's not like
- 37:21genetically transferable. But maybe it is in some I don't
- 37:25know. Bought it.
- 37:26Bio is weird. Bio how things work is a little
- 37:29odd. So maybe it's like.
- 37:31Yeah, maybe. Maybe we evolved in that 30
- 37:35years if your. Mom had drank the goat milk.
- 37:37That might make some more sense. Yeah, I know.
- 37:39Especially then you're drinking her milk.
- 37:41Yeah. Yeah, because that's why you're
- 37:43not supposed to drink alcohol. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:46Or smoke, right? Yeah.
- 37:47Maybe, yeah, I don't know. You get a little bit of it all.
- 37:50Like filters down just like if a fish eats some kind of pollutant
- 37:56and then the bird eats the fish and then totally the cougar eats
- 37:59the bird like it all might bio accumulates.
- 38:03Yeah, I just tell people that's why you don't get poison milk.
- 38:07Yeah, because your dad drink. The goat's milk.
- 38:09The goat's milk. Well, that's what I kind of
- 38:11assimilate it too. Yeah.
- 38:12It's like, well, maybe that's it, but like I said, I've never
- 38:16I. Think there's like a percentage
- 38:17that doesn't get it, like a high percentage like 2530%.
- 38:21Well, maybe I'll test it out this year and I'll be like,
- 38:23let's see what? Happens.
- 38:24Yeah, I have. I had a friend who did that.
- 38:26And then we're on a hike and. He's like, I don't get it.
- 38:28And he's like, I'm like, oh God, it's.
- 38:31All like do not do that around me.
- 38:33Yeah. I mean, I get it from like
- 38:35looking at it too much. Yeah, there's different strains
- 38:39too. So like the Bay Area coastal
- 38:42strain? I was gonna.
- 38:43Still get that I'll get it worse down there to this day than I
- 38:47will, and like my unlaws property in Roseburg.
- 38:50Yeah, I was gonna say, I wonder, like you used to get it really
- 38:52bad and then now that you you don't get it as bad.
- 38:55Maybe it's because it's the, yeah, the variety that's up
- 38:58here. It's a little.
- 38:58Or maybe it's like honey and like, you know, the benefits of
- 39:01local honey are supposed to be like if you live within like 5
- 39:03to 10 miles. That's what they say, yeah.
- 39:05Maybe it's. Like poison?
- 39:05That for poison oak too. Poison oak Honey.
- 39:07I've tried eating poison oak, honey and to reduce my reaction
- 39:12and the only way has been to just basically not be outside.
- 39:16Yeah, not. Touching it normally works,
- 39:18yeah. But like, I'll get it from dogs,
- 39:20I'll get it from other people who have been in it, I'll get
- 39:22it. From yeah.
- 39:22So you're. Yeah.
- 39:23Yeah, I'm just super. Alerted You did pretty good last
- 39:25year when we went on a lot of hikes and stuff.
- 39:27Yeah, yeah, I did pretty. We did a lot of water based
- 39:32recreation like water vicinity recreation.
- 39:35And so there's a way that I can rinse real quickly that's really
- 39:39helpful. That's also the key, the quick
- 39:41rinse because the your show Yep binds quicker to certain people
- 39:47than others. So like the faster you can get
- 39:48it off. I don't also allergic to the oil
- 39:53on the skin of a mango which is the same oil and only like 1 in
- 39:57a bajillion people who are allergic to poison oak are also
- 40:00allergic to that. So I can't touch a mango.
- 40:02Yeah. I can't pick up a mango and
- 40:05slice it and if somebody else slices it for me like they have
- 40:09to rinse the knife and. I didn't know.
- 40:11There was off the cutting board. That's.
- 40:14Cool. Yeah, raw cashews.
- 40:15Like, still in their shell. And mangoes have the same oil as
- 40:20poison oak. Wow.
- 40:21It's fucked up. Dang, you know I was going to
- 40:24say too. Like I'm, I don't, I don't know
- 40:27if this is anything to do with it, but I also like when we're
- 40:30in really like when we're camping and stuff and we're in
- 40:32really like heavy mosquito Y territory.
- 40:36I don't really like, they don't flock to me and I don't really
- 40:38get mosquito bites, but Sean will get eaten up.
- 40:42Yeah. And I've heard it's like your
- 40:44CO2 output. I've heard it's like blood type.
- 40:46I've heard so much. Like I've never, I, I never
- 40:49really like get any ticks on me being out either.
- 40:52Like I've never really study you.
- 40:54Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like a superhero orgy
- 40:58story. Yeah.
- 40:59We got dunked in the VAT of like protecting.
- 41:02Yeah, I'm an outdoors superhero. Just don't get any of the things
- 41:06like. Pretty good comics.
- 41:08Yeah, yeah. We need to find a graphic artist
- 41:12who could create this for us. Yeah.
- 41:14That's kind of cool. I don't know.
- 41:15We always, we're always like, hi, I wonder what that's about
- 41:18cuz Sean just gets eaten up to the point where like we won't
- 41:22well, we still camp and stuff, but he's like really sensitive
- 41:25and he's. Got the right time of year just
- 41:26like. And he just beats it up.
- 41:28He's like, I got, I need the real deep.
- 41:30I can't use any of that, you know, like.
- 41:33I always try the hippie stuff 1st and.
- 41:36It never works. See how?
- 41:38See how vicious the mosquitoes are?
- 41:40Like, can they be worded? Yeah.
- 41:41Or do you just gotta go? Fabric Store yesterday suggested
- 41:45keeping cedar balls in your pockets and that will keep
- 41:49mosquitoes away. Interesting.
- 41:51I love all those like little home remedies like what you
- 41:53should do and I know I think it's kind of funny some of.
- 41:55Them probably work pretty well. In some, at least keep them up
- 41:58Bay. And some of it really does
- 42:01depend on. You.
- 42:02Yeah, yeah, some things work for other.
- 42:04People totes it does. It's totally just chemistry.
- 42:09I also have a really rare blood type.
- 42:12Did you know that I didn't? Know that, that's why I'm like
- 42:14I. Don't want it.
- 42:15Yeah, yeah. They're like, what the fuck is
- 42:16that? Like we don't see like.
- 42:18The escargot of blood. What type is it?
- 42:22It's AB positive or negative? It's the more rare one.
- 42:26Interesting. I think negative, yeah.
- 42:32Because that's like an 8. Like they don't know where that
- 42:34like negative RA factor came from or whatever.
- 42:36I don't know. I've been told whenever I like
- 42:38go to do blood work, they're like you really need to think
- 42:41about giving blood. I don't have the extra rare one.
- 42:44There's one that is like insanely rare.
- 42:47I'm just like a step. Above that, medium rare.
- 42:49Medium rare. Yeah, so, but I don't know
- 42:53exactly what it is, but I've just been told, like Heather,
- 42:55you need to be giving blood. I'm like, OK, well maybe I'll
- 43:00think about it anyway, so let's. Get back to Casey here.
- 43:03Yeah, yeah. I wanna know about.
- 43:05I wanna know about. Devo yeah, I wanna know where
- 43:08origin story. What Devo is, what it stands
- 43:12for, why you're doing it, Yeah. Everything, huh?
- 43:15Yeah, yeah, we'll help. Who?
- 43:18What when we're wise? So Devo basically, well in a
- 43:25nutshell, it's a youth development program to teach
- 43:27mountain bike skills to kinder through 12th graders.
- 43:32It started well, I moved here right from, we talked about on
- 43:36the hike from Marin County and right when I was graduating from
- 43:41high school there, there was like this kind of uptick in like
- 43:45organized club sport, mountain bike stuff.
- 43:47And I had some friends who were on kind of the early teams and
- 43:55worked with one of the founders of NICA who is the, it's the
- 43:59National Interscholastic Cycling Association.
- 44:02So NICA is huge now. I mean, there's, I don't know,
- 44:0710s of thousands of student athletes in Nyka across the
- 44:10country. But at the time it started
- 44:12Berkeley High School across the Bay from where I grew up.
- 44:14And yeah, I thought it was pretty cool.
- 44:17But I never, I never did the team, but I knew about it and I
- 44:24had friends who did it and it looked cool.
- 44:26Mountain bike racing. I never thought about racing or
- 44:29anything. Yeah.
- 44:31So I put that on hold. But that's just kind of the
- 44:34background of like, I knew these programs existed and cool,
- 44:38right? And then so when I had kids and
- 44:40we moved up here and back in Marin, I'd see like groups of
- 44:44kids riding on the trails, on the fire roads.
- 44:46And so like, even though we didn't have like the really cool
- 44:49single track and features on the trails, there'd be groups of
- 44:53kids riding out there. So when I moved here, all of a
- 44:55sudden it flipped and there was all this epic single track
- 44:59trail, which is like don't know what the equivalent and like a
- 45:03really sweet rapid compared to like the boring stuff.
- 45:06You know right The. Standing way that you can serve.
- 45:08Yeah, sure. Stuff like, yeah, so single
- 45:11track is like the Holy Grail for mountain bikers.
- 45:13Like that's what you want to be riding.
- 45:14And yeah, I but I didn't see any of the kids or the organization
- 45:20around it. So I'm like, my daughters
- 45:23hopefully will get into this one day and it'd be really cool if
- 45:27they had friends to ride with then.
- 45:29Like is there a high school team?
- 45:30I googled Ash and high, there's no mention of any mountain
- 45:32biking stuff. I'm like, this is crazy.
- 45:34Like the access is so good. I mean, you literally can be on
- 45:38the trails 10 minutes after you get out of school.
- 45:41And so at the time I was doing my research, I stumbled across
- 45:48this website for this brand new thing and it was the Oregon
- 45:51League. And the Oregon League was going
- 45:52to, this was 2017, was going to be in its inaugural season in
- 45:572018. And basically somebody had moved
- 46:01here from San Francisco, moved to Oregon.
- 46:04They live in there in Portland. Heather Wolfgang, shout out.
- 46:07Heather Wolfgang. Yep.
- 46:08Hi Heather. We just had a meeting with her.
- 46:11Nice. Yeah.
- 46:11Yeah, She's cool. Amazing.
- 46:12So her and Kurt, her husband Kurt, moved up and they started
- 46:18the league here. And they had coached in San
- 46:20Francisco and knew how valuable the program was, and they
- 46:22started it. So somehow I saw in my research
- 46:26of, like, what's around for kids, this league was starting.
- 46:28It's like, if you're interested in starting A-Team, e-mail here.
- 46:31And I was like, this has to be some sort of divine intervention
- 46:35because I don't know. And at the time I was a
- 46:38firefighter. So when you're a firefighter,
- 46:40you, you work block schedule like I was telling you.
- 46:43But when you're off, like you don't have, you don't bring work
- 46:45home, right? So I had like 4 to 8 days of
- 46:49basically just like doing family stuff that I could put into
- 46:53starting A-Team. So I had the time and the
- 46:54energy. So I emailed Heather, we had a
- 46:57conversation and we got this NICA team rolling.
- 47:00We did a bunch of recruitment at like local events in town and I
- 47:05want to say and I found some other coaches who were willing
- 47:07to help me out. Yeah, you got to have the
- 47:09coaches I'm. Yeah, you got to have support.
- 47:11It's not a one person show by any means.
- 47:13That's. What I'm finding?
- 47:15And we, I think we start with like maybe 10 to 14 kids the
- 47:22first year. Wow, that's a good.
- 47:24Starting amount. Yeah, I guess it was at the
- 47:26time. I mean, now we have 40, so it
- 47:29seems like a small team, but yeah, I think it was, it was
- 47:33good. And we're kind of like the Bad
- 47:34News Bears, you know, like these kids are showing up in like full
- 47:37faces and goggles and full pads and like these super clap bikes
- 47:42and and we're like, oh, we're actually like a cross country
- 47:45team, right? Like technically, like it's
- 47:47focused on cross country and cross country is like climbing
- 47:52up and down, up and down rolling hills.
- 47:55But the problem is these mountains are set up for enduro
- 47:58and downhill, which is basically either shuttle or pedal really
- 48:01slowly up and then RIP down as fast as you can so.
- 48:05That's the full face mask. Yeah.
- 48:07So these masks are showing all like, yeah, we want to be on the
- 48:09bike team like we're jumping and doing.
- 48:11Tricks and crash. You're like late.
- 48:12Hold on. Yeah, and Nica, I gotta adjust.
- 48:15I'm sorry you'll. Be fine.
- 48:17I gotta like. Oh, you are.
- 48:19Oh, no, you were sinking. You're in a little sink.
- 48:22I. Want to sink this way though?
- 48:23Yeah. OK, there we go.
- 48:24OK. Cool.
- 48:26Yeah, so it was kind of funny because these kids are like,
- 48:29wait, you wants to pedal up there?
- 48:31Like our parents just drive us and we get like 8 laps.
- 48:35And I was like, yeah, how do I sell this?
- 48:37You know? So we had a couple years like
- 48:39that and then I think we talked about it, but my girls were
- 48:43kindergarten and preschool when I started this and I was like,
- 48:47this is a long term investment. I got to do this for six years
- 48:50before they get into this. And I was like, what if we had
- 48:54something for younger kids to like learn the skills and then
- 48:58they're like ready to go when they get to to Nika.
- 49:01A Rogue composite was the name of our team because we're a
- 49:03composite of the Rogue Valley. Meaning like kids from all.
- 49:08Over it's not it's not school based.
- 49:10There are school based teams, but we can get into that piece a
- 49:14little later. But in terms of the start, it
- 49:18was like, hey, if you wanna drive to the practices, like you
- 49:21can be on the team, right? Right.
- 49:23Well, that's where I was like, we need something in GP because
- 49:26like 45 minutes is a lot. We've had Grants Pass kids on
- 49:30the team a lot, yeah, and that's a lot.
- 49:32And they don't always come back, you know, because.
- 49:35That's a lot. Yeah, especially if it's a multi
- 49:37year commitment. Yeah, right.
- 49:39If you know it's only gonna be two or three years, sure, sure.
- 49:42But if it's like, oh, you're in. You're going.
- 49:45Sick the next 16 you. Can just see the writing on the
- 49:47wall and you're like, I don't want to drive there.
- 49:49Every day, that's a bit. That's a bit.
- 49:52Anyways, so at the time we were maybe a season or two into the
- 49:58Rogue composite team, which is in the fall and kind of having a
- 50:02pretty good, pretty good success with recruiting kids.
- 50:04And, and we started to get get a little more into, OK, they kids
- 50:10understand what this is. We understand what it is.
- 50:14Yeah, totally how it works. And at the same, at the same
- 50:18time I was trying to figure out how to get younger kids into it.
- 50:21We were also starting to lose some of the kids who are were
- 50:24like, yeah, we don't want to pedal anymore.
- 50:26That's not for us. We want to ride bikes for this
- 50:28specific experience and you're not providing it.
- 50:31So all of a sudden I'm like, oh man, we need more programs and
- 50:35we need to open this up. How do we do it?
- 50:38Well, another kind of divine intervention, whatever you want
- 50:41to call it was one of my Co founders Steven Caruthers had
- 50:46moved into my. Hey howdy.
- 50:49Hi y'all. It's Heather here to interrupt
- 50:51this amazing episode with Casey. So I want to talk about Ashland
- 50:56Devo. If you have a kid with energy,
- 50:58curiosity, or honestly just way too much screen time happening,
- 51:01this could be for you. Obviously you have to be in the
- 51:04Ashland area as well, but Ashland Devo is a Southern
- 51:07Oregon youth mountain biking program.
- 51:09Getting kids off the couch and onto the trails.
- 51:11Building confidence, resilience and real life grit through these
- 51:15coached rides and community baby.
- 51:18And it's not just for kids. Devo also runs Wombat Women on
- 51:22mountain bikes and trails Baby. These are three hour clinics for
- 51:26women and young adult girls focused on fundamentals of
- 51:29mountain biking in a supportive all female environment with
- 51:33professional coaches. So whether you're signing up for
- 51:36your kid, learning for yourself, or you just want to support this
- 51:39really cool mission that Devo has going on through donations
- 51:42and scholarships, this is how we build a stronger outdoor
- 51:46community. Y'all, let's get involved.
- 51:48Check out Ashlyn Devo and come ride with us.
- 51:55Howdy friends. Quick little pause on the
- 51:57adventure. First of all, we just want to
- 51:59say thank you. Truly.
- 52:01The fact that you're out there listening to this weird little
- 52:03outdoor podcast we started means more to us than you probably
- 52:06realize. We're just two little feral
- 52:09childhood besties that had an idea, grab some microphones and
- 52:12decided to record conversations in the wild.
- 52:15And somehow you showed up for it.
- 52:17Thank you. So if this podcast has ever made
- 52:20you laugh, taught you something, or kept you company on a drive,
- 52:23a hike, or a day at the river, we have one small favor to ask
- 52:27you. Give the show a follow, tap the
- 52:29stars and leave a review if you can.
- 52:31And also, here's a little fun exercise.
- 52:34Think of the first person who popped in your head while
- 52:36listening to this episode because let's be honest,
- 52:38everyone on podcasts, remind somebody of somebody or somebody
- 52:42you know that'll enjoy this podcast.
- 52:44Send this episode to them. That's honestly the best way
- 52:48this little wildly podcast grows.
- 52:51All right, thanks for being here with us.
- 52:53Now let's go wildly together. OK, we're back.
- 52:57OK, we're back, Carruthers. OK, we did it.
- 53:03Yeah, so I met Steven Carruthers, who was a new
- 53:06neighbor. He has a daughter maybe three
- 53:08years younger than my girls. And yeah, he he he was like, how
- 53:14do we get these girls riding together?
- 53:16I'm like, well, funny you say that.
- 53:17I have this team and I want to start this K through 5 program
- 53:21like, but I don't know how to do it.
- 53:23Like, like does anything like this exist?
- 53:25And he's like, I'm from Durango and there's a massive program
- 53:30and like, yeah, let's start it like instantly, you know, And I
- 53:35was like, well, if there's a model and a guide, like let's
- 53:39see, let's get into it. And Stevens like the dreamer and
- 53:42I'm the realist. So it was automatically a good
- 53:44combination because like he could tell me when I wasn't
- 53:47pushing ideas enough and I could tell him when when whatever he
- 53:51was saying was crazy. But it both kind of worked.
- 53:53But just crazy enough to work. Just crazy enough.
- 53:55Yeah. This is not a what's up, man?
- 54:00I'm podcasting. Yeah, yeah, I'm starting a new
- 54:02career and. Sound bite.
- 54:11Look at me. I'm doing it.
- 54:13It's way better than mountain biking.
- 54:18Yeah. So we got together and we pulled
- 54:19in another friend, Mike Vanderberg, and and we kind of
- 54:24put our heads together and we're like, how do we do this?
- 54:27Well, Steven was like, I'm just going to call Sarah Tescher, who
- 54:30founded Durango Devo and see what she has to say.
- 54:33And he's like, he calls her and he's like, hey, she wants to fly
- 54:35out like and now and she does this, we just got a pair of 500
- 54:40bucks. She'll be the entire weekend.
- 54:42Like it's really good value. And I was like does.
- 54:44She still do it for that, she still I.
- 54:46Don't know if she does it for that but she definitely still.
- 54:48I could just pay you though and you could help.
- 54:50Yeah, No, I. Could do it for sure.
- 54:54Yeah. There you go.
- 54:55It'll be 400. $99.00 that seems, I mean that seems worth it
- 54:59because even started to interrupt.
- 55:02But even Bob and I now are just like we talked to we talked to
- 55:06Heather and it was still a little like, wait, she didn't
- 55:08get she didn't tell us that there is like we can get online
- 55:11to the portal and all of the guide stuff is there to like
- 55:14starting A-Team and everything. Then we talked to somebody else,
- 55:17the one of the gals in oh gosh, where is she at?
- 55:20I can't remember. We talked to another team
- 55:23captain, Gal, and she was like, Oh yeah, all you need to do is
- 55:27get on the portal and it's all of it's right there for you.
- 55:30And we're like. Yeah, totally.
- 55:33Anyway, I just want to say that because, like, it's hard to
- 55:36figure it out. Yeah.
- 55:37Who's? Done it before and like kids
- 55:40riding bikes, we're not reinventing the wheel.
- 55:41No, it's easy, but the coordination.
- 55:43Something that doesn't exist where we live, right?
- 55:46Right. So there's value to it, but
- 55:49there's also a hack. Yeah.
- 55:51Yeah, yeah. So Sarah flew out and she was
- 55:55amazing, you know, she, they started their program in 2006.
- 55:59I think they have close to 1000 kids in their program and their
- 56:02town is the same size as Ashland, which is insane.
- 56:05So cool. But it's way more, it's been a
- 56:08culture. I've never been there, but from
- 56:11what I gather it's like a, that's the culture there.
- 56:14Like here it's Shakespeare there, it's mountain bike.
- 56:17Like you can't do anything with or cycling.
- 56:19I'll say you can't do anything without running into that, you
- 56:23know? Anyway, so she had a meeting and
- 56:28I had put out feelers to parents who are already in the night cut
- 56:32program. And I got maybe 15-8 to 15
- 56:35people who were interested in coaching to show up to this
- 56:38meeting with Sarah. And Sarah kind of talks about
- 56:41how to create an organization. And then we do this whole thing
- 56:44and we offered some free clinics.
- 56:46We're like, let's just put some feelers out K through 5 free
- 56:49clinic like how's this going to work?
- 56:51And beat a white rabbit. And we, we would show up and
- 56:55Sarah would kind of walk us through like a class, how you
- 56:59would maybe run a class. And then we spent more time
- 57:01doing games with her and like all the things you would know,
- 57:05need to know to like the meat and potatoes of it.
- 57:08But then she also told us, like, how to set up a nonprofit, how
- 57:12to fundraise all this stuff. And.
- 57:14Wow, she brought a lot of value. At the time, it was like, do we
- 57:17set up as a nonprofit or a private business?
- 57:19And for me, I think at this time, actually, I had left my
- 57:23fire crew with the intention of setting something up that would
- 57:28help bring income in, but I wasn't going to be the primary
- 57:32breadwinner. And I didn't know how long that
- 57:35would take or how that would look long term.
- 57:38It's still like a moving goal post, it seems, with my family
- 57:43to make it work. But yeah, at the time it was
- 57:46like, oh man, this is going to take a lot of work to make any
- 57:50make any living wage from. Well, that's how we.
- 57:53Feel savings built up to be able to.
- 57:56Oh yeah, for sure. Because my wife hadn't been
- 58:02working. OK, so we essentially flipped
- 58:05and she got a really good full time job here and she wanted to
- 58:08go work labor and delivery. That's like her passion.
- 58:11She's 10 times better at that than I am at running mountain
- 58:15bike programs. Like she's, that's just like her
- 58:17calling, you know? And so we were already a single
- 58:21income family. So it was less harsh, I think.
- 58:26But yeah, we were able to do it and it's kind.
- 58:30Of what you have to do to chase a dream just.
- 58:33I guess, yeah, it was probably. Some sacrifice and risk.
- 58:36Really like financially, no financial planner would have
- 58:41ever told me to go and do that. But like I was really miserable
- 58:46at the FIRE job. We don't need to get into that
- 58:48piece of it because it's not that interesting.
- 58:50But like, it was a good time to like have something new to like
- 58:54grab my attention. Yeah.
- 58:56And yeah, so I looking. For a way out and.
- 59:00It was right. Yeah, 100% yeah.
- 59:03And super supportive wife Allison, who diva wouldn't exist
- 59:09without her because like, you know, she could have easily been
- 59:11like, you're right. You're not like chasing the
- 59:14stupid dream of like mountain biking stuff.
- 59:17But I think she recognized the value that it was going to give
- 59:19our daughters. And she believed in me and
- 59:23herself. And then, you know, but yeah,
- 59:25definitely, you know, two way street or whatever, like
- 59:30definitely had to have her on board.
- 59:33Yeah. So we found like it was just me,
- 59:36Steven, Mike and then our wives on the board to start.
- 59:39And we like drafted bylaws. We got a lawyer.
- 59:43And it was just like, we kept pushing like we asked these
- 59:45questions like, well, how do we do this?
- 59:48And then we just figure out the answers.
- 59:49Like you would, you have to like you can't, you can't let
- 59:52something stop. You just have to make the phone
- 59:54call. You have to set up the meeting
- 59:56and you have to like ask the questions that make the make the
- 1:00:01lawyer like, well, I better look into that, you know, and.
- 1:00:04So it's a lot of persistence. I think and lots of other people
- 1:00:09have done it before, yeah, probably with in some ways less
- 1:00:13smarts, less skills, less connections.
- 1:00:16They've made it. Work, they've made it work.
- 1:00:17Yeah. And it's always scary because
- 1:00:19you look at those programs as like, it's kind of like when I
- 1:00:23don't know if you have kids, but when you when you have kids and
- 1:00:25you're like, shit, I'm still the kid.
- 1:00:28And you realize that your parents didn't know what they
- 1:00:31were doing. Yeah, it's kind of like that
- 1:00:33too. Like where you're like.
- 1:00:34Oh, you look. Up to these other people or
- 1:00:37entities as like, oh, they've been there forever.
- 1:00:39They must know everything and then they don't.
- 1:00:42And you're like, oh, that's kind of scary.
- 1:00:43We're all just out here shooting from the hip.
- 1:00:45Yeah, I'm trying to tell my son, my 9 year old, I'm trying to
- 1:00:48relay that message now. I'm like, hey, I don't know what
- 1:00:51I'm doing, OK? Like please listen.
- 1:00:54But if I make a mistake right, I don't know what I'm doing that's
- 1:00:57good too. Though that's like, that's yeah.
- 1:00:59Instead of pretending. Like.
- 1:01:00You've got it all figured out. And you?
- 1:01:02Know what? Yeah.
- 1:01:03Yeah, nobody does. Yeah, nobody does.
- 1:01:06Yeah. Anyways, so we were able to kind
- 1:01:09of Fast forward, we, we set up these first programs and we, we
- 1:01:14had everything like on Google Spreadsheets, you know, and
- 1:01:17we're like set some pricing like, I don't know, this sounds
- 1:01:19OK, like it's gonna cover the insurance, but like we need the
- 1:01:22people to sign up, you know, hope, fingers crossed.
- 1:01:25And we had done 3 or 4 free clinics and like one of them had
- 1:01:28like 100 kids show up. So I was like, I know the needs
- 1:01:31there. Now how do we like connect the
- 1:01:32dots, right? And, and so we're like ready to
- 1:01:37launch. We have our final board meeting
- 1:01:38before registration and then we're like all right, March 5th
- 1:01:42registration opens, but it was 2020, so.
- 1:01:47It's like. Yeah, it's COVID and all that
- 1:01:54just like goes away. And it was like so
- 1:01:57disappointing. I was like, it was such, you
- 1:01:59know, we had so much momentum, you know, and, and it was like,
- 1:02:03Oh my God, how are we going to get through this?
- 1:02:07I'm definitely not getting any. This is definitely all volunteer
- 1:02:11pro bono, you know, like there's no money coming in.
- 1:02:14And we did the small amount of money we did get, it was like
- 1:02:18we'll be sponsored business sponsors gave us money, but like
- 1:02:21now we can't do anything. So what do we do?
- 1:02:24And we just had to really adapt and like play by the rules.
- 1:02:28We did end up running kind of like an abridged like 4 week
- 1:02:34middle school program that spring in like June.
- 1:02:37Like I forget how it worked, but we were following all the
- 1:02:40guidance kids that we had Devo masks, like Devo on it and then
- 1:02:44and you're outdoors, you're outdoors.
- 1:02:46You're on your own bike, it's not like really interfacing with
- 1:02:51one another. Yeah.
- 1:02:53And like, we didn't maybe know as much as we know at the time,
- 1:02:55but like, now you, like, you know, you're not gonna catch a
- 1:02:59cold outside. You're gonna catch it indoors
- 1:03:01around a bunch of people. So it felt pretty safe.
- 1:03:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:05And. But there was so, so much
- 1:03:09unknown that you're like, oh shit, we might as well just
- 1:03:10like, play it right here. Yeah, we have to be very
- 1:03:12terrible about perception yeah too, because all of a sudden
- 1:03:16people are like, Oh no, if they see us on the trails and we're
- 1:03:20not. So it was like a very stressful
- 1:03:22already stressful just with like personal everyone's family life
- 1:03:28of like, oh, our kids aren't going to school this and that.
- 1:03:30But yeah, we some of those kids in that first program are not,
- 1:03:34there are seniors now and they have become like the kids that
- 1:03:40have kind of carried the development of the program all
- 1:03:42the way through. So it's like.
- 1:03:43Really cool to. See them make it through anyway.
- 1:03:45So by the fall, we were able to run what we initially wanted to.
- 1:03:50And yeah, that that was a pretty good feeling.
- 1:03:54So that's how the ball got rolling.
- 1:03:56Kind of a long way around that, but yeah.
- 1:04:00And then so basically what these programs look like is semester
- 1:04:05long, 6 to 8 weeks, once a week or twice a week, depending on
- 1:04:10your age and skill. And these kids are just getting
- 1:04:13together in peer groups of like 8 to 10 kids with two coaches
- 1:04:17and they're just playing, learning, you know, developing
- 1:04:22skill and really well. Our mission is instilling
- 1:04:27Wellness in our youth by building great resilience and
- 1:04:29camaraderie. So like trying to build great
- 1:04:31resilience and camaraderie. So it's like the teamwork, it's
- 1:04:34the pushing through hard things, It's continuing to move even
- 1:04:38when things get hard and handling setbacks.
- 1:04:41So. Getting back up when you fall.
- 1:04:43Down, yeah. And of course, having fun,
- 1:04:44that's like the first and foremost program goal of every
- 1:04:47program that says have fun for the coaches to remember that.
- 1:04:53Yeah. And yeah.
- 1:04:55So that's kind of what the programs do.
- 1:04:58And then we've added stuff every year.
- 1:05:02So we have a race series we do in the spring for the community.
- 1:05:07We do like 5 or 6 races local around, and then we end like at
- 1:05:11a business sponsor in town, which is pretty cool.
- 1:05:15We started a women's initiative called the Wombats, Women on
- 1:05:21mountain bike, bikes and trails. And so we have a community
- 1:05:27development director, Leslie Eldridge, who is running that,
- 1:05:31and she's doing a great job. Yeah, we kind of identified like
- 1:05:35the lack of girls is like we wanted to address, and it's a
- 1:05:40nationwide thing with mountain biking.
- 1:05:41But we thought, well, who cares? We can still try to change it
- 1:05:45here. That's kind of outdoor
- 1:05:46recreation as a whole is pretty male dominated.
- 1:05:50Women are changing that and thank you for being a man
- 1:05:54wanting to change that. Well, you know, I have two
- 1:05:56daughters and I probably admittedly would not feel the
- 1:05:59same way if I had two sons, but maybe cuz I didn't know, you
- 1:06:03know, and about the about like how 25% of girls drop out of
- 1:06:09their sport by the time they're in 8th grade, that kind of
- 1:06:11stuff. But yeah, having two daughters
- 1:06:15and trying to raise them like with like a lot of inner
- 1:06:18strength and like those things, resilience and grit, like it's
- 1:06:22super important to me. And now I'm trying.
- 1:06:24To raise them as. Boys, but trying to raise them
- 1:06:26as girls with these. Qualities because there are
- 1:06:29major differences and I'm finding out every day, you know,
- 1:06:32they're like my older one's a teenager now and.
- 1:06:36Making adjustments for hormone cycles.
- 1:06:39And. Social demands and.
- 1:06:42So it's like this, but I, you know, someone once told me if
- 1:06:45you get your daughter through the age of 11 and 12 and she's
- 1:06:48still riding bikes, she's probably going to keep doing it.
- 1:06:50And I was like, OK, they're 13 and 12 now, so.
- 1:06:54Yeah, hopefully they're close. One of the key.
- 1:06:56I've recently been learning that one of the key indicators for
- 1:06:59anybody, but particularly a female, to grow up with a sense
- 1:07:03of confidence is having love and attention from her father.
- 1:07:07Yeah, for sure. There's like a lot of, you know,
- 1:07:10data that backs that up and it's, it's unfortunate that
- 1:07:14doesn't happen for everybody, but I'm in a position to make it
- 1:07:18happen. So I'm not going to like, screw
- 1:07:20that up, hell. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, totally
- 1:07:22like. If I can do it, I'm going to do
- 1:07:23it like, and I'm lucky enough for like, I'm not, I'm not gone
- 1:07:29like I used to be all the time, the fire department.
- 1:07:31So a lot of that decision making was like being freaking
- 1:07:35terrified at like the possibility of like not being
- 1:07:39able to give my kids that. Yeah.
- 1:07:42Yeah, yeah. So on that, on that women,
- 1:07:45woman's and like woman's and yeah and yeah.
- 1:07:49And the women's space of mountain biking and stuff.
- 1:07:51I right before I had Roscoe and I kind of fell off the face of
- 1:07:55the earth, I started a just an Instagram account that was
- 1:08:00called Send Her. So it's like a women's mountain
- 1:08:03biking collective and it didn't go anywhere because obviously I
- 1:08:07got pregnant with Roscoe and kind of did anywhere yet anyway.
- 1:08:12And I just thought was me. I was like just being in the
- 1:08:15bike shop full time. It was like seeing such a lack
- 1:08:17of women in the space, but the women that were coming in and my
- 1:08:21friends, I would quickly make friends with them.
- 1:08:23And it was like there's only, they really wanted that space to
- 1:08:27not ride with the guys because there's only ever guys riding
- 1:08:31group. Like even our, you know,
- 1:08:33Thursday night trail ride that Sean puts on every like that's
- 1:08:36our bread and butter. He does it rain or shine, hot or
- 1:08:38cold, and. Cycle Sport does that on
- 1:08:41Thursday. Nights here, yeah, one of them.
- 1:08:42And yeah. And it's just like, but there's
- 1:08:45all these guys and he comes in and he's like, oh, yeah, a girl
- 1:08:47showed up. She said that she would like to
- 1:08:50ride with more girls. And it's just like, da, da, da.
- 1:08:52Anyway. But I was so amazed at the
- 1:08:55support that I got when I launched that center.
- 1:08:58I had so many Ashland girls. That's cool.
- 1:09:01Just like, yeah, follow and then message me like, hey, what's
- 1:09:06this all about and all this shit.
- 1:09:08And I was like, this is really cool.
- 1:09:09Like there's a lot of like want and need.
- 1:09:11And then unfortunately I just like I was in a space that I
- 1:09:14couldn't. Whatever, just cuz you didn't
- 1:09:15have the capacity. I didn't have the capacity to
- 1:09:17put it on, but that was kind of, it's always kind of been my
- 1:09:19goal. I'm trying to revive that in
- 1:09:23Grants Pass, at least for the few women that ride or and
- 1:09:26getting more women in writing. I want to do a like every other
- 1:09:30week alongside the guys ride and.
- 1:09:34Less. I mean, you have your own thing
- 1:09:35up there, I know, but like, if you ever send a carpool down,
- 1:09:39like Leslie's doing it every Wednesday night.
- 1:09:41Cool. That's.
- 1:09:42Cool and so show up for that and like you'll probably meet 2030
- 1:09:46women like it's. Cute.
- 1:09:47Yeah. I mean, that's part of the.
- 1:09:49I mean, I would like to network meet and then, you know, if,
- 1:09:53hey, Thursday nights every other week.
- 1:09:55We do this right in GP if you want to explore.
- 1:09:58Yeah. I was just saying on the on the
- 1:10:01write up, I was like, oh, I really want to, I really want to
- 1:10:03go trail running with the woodland girls crew.
- 1:10:06They're very active down here. And I was like, but I got to
- 1:10:07start running because like I haven't been trail running in
- 1:10:10forever too. So I.
- 1:10:12Got a different caliber of athleticism in general.
- 1:10:16I know. But you got to remember like
- 1:10:19like even the most of the there's a couple men's groups
- 1:10:22that are not gonna they're gonna try to drop you.
- 1:10:24But like most of those kind of like sponsored rides are no
- 1:10:27drop, right? So like that means like.
- 1:10:30Leslie. 'S going to be there with like
- 1:10:31the person who's in last like helping you and just like she
- 1:10:35like it's all just fun like. Yeah, don't have to.
- 1:10:38You don't have to. Be like a certain you're not
- 1:10:42slowing people down, you're not ruining their time.
- 1:10:45Like it's just like getting out there and like it's super.
- 1:10:49Building community and doing it together.
- 1:10:51I'm telling you that Sean doing hit the Thursday night ride has
- 1:10:55been like so I and I'm surprised he always has the core group of
- 1:11:00dudes, but like and then he'll have like draw, you know, like
- 1:11:04there'll be seasons where there's this one guy riding or
- 1:11:06like this group and it's just like you think there would be a
- 1:11:10little bit more, but there's not.
- 1:11:11But like, I don't know. We try more turn out.
- 1:11:13You mean? Yeah, like more turn out, but
- 1:11:15it's still happening. We're not really in like.
- 1:11:17Just the fact that it's existing and it's existing because like
- 1:11:20we offer stuff too. And sometimes I'm like, this is
- 1:11:23going to sell out in, in a week. And then like, because everybody
- 1:11:26is like, Hey, you should do this.
- 1:11:28And then you do it and like one person signs up and you're like,
- 1:11:31well, we, we're still doing it though.
- 1:11:33And like people might feel bad, like my helpers might feel bad.
- 1:11:35And I'm like, no, don't feel bad.
- 1:11:37Like we're, we're, do we're like putting it out there.
- 1:11:40Yeah, it exists and it's consistent.
- 1:11:42Yeah. And it's consistency, right?
- 1:11:44Like that's all like, yeah, things that pot, like group
- 1:11:47things and activities that pop up, I'm always just like, gosh,
- 1:11:50I hope they just stay consistent through this, like through the
- 1:11:53time of like maybe there's a season where there's not a lot
- 1:11:55of show up. Like don't, don't, I don't know.
- 1:11:58I'm just like, that's been Sean and I was like, no, continue to
- 1:12:02do it like you need to just like regardless if you're the only
- 1:12:05one or. I think it's really valuable to
- 1:12:07do things that you want to do, so that no matter what, if
- 1:12:11nobody shows up, you're still. Doing what?
- 1:12:12Yeah, Sean's still doing. If other people were there.
- 1:12:14Yeah, knowing that could be an option so you stay positive
- 1:12:17about it. Like I like I knew something
- 1:12:20like maybe we wouldn't have numbers that I thought we could
- 1:12:23get, but that's just like a problem for me to solve.
- 1:12:26It doesn't affect the whole experience.
- 1:12:27Yeah. It's like I can take that piece
- 1:12:29back and be like, how can I do a better job at getting the word
- 1:12:32out or recruiting who I think would enjoy this or benefit from
- 1:12:37it? But I still experience that with
- 1:12:38maybe three other kids and two other coaches that had the time
- 1:12:42of their lives or whatever. Yeah, cuz there's then it's
- 1:12:44that. Small group like more one-on-one
- 1:12:46attention and connection and then there's value in Oh my God
- 1:12:49look at all these people here. This is so cool.
- 1:12:50Right. And sometimes it's better when
- 1:12:53it's just like a core group. It's just two.
- 1:12:56I don't know. It's funny because the times
- 1:12:58that we've put in Group rides on like weekend trips up to like
- 1:13:01Bandit and stuff, yeah, I have like we have like 50 riders and
- 1:13:06I'm like we can't all ride together.
- 1:13:08Like we'll do a run all in a fucking snake and it's just
- 1:13:11like, it's like, OK, that's not fun.
- 1:13:14Like we got to pair off it or like, you know, break off into
- 1:13:16groups and like, but those are the funnest times when we go and
- 1:13:20do like big rides. Big.
- 1:13:22Stuff. But yeah, that's super cool
- 1:13:25anyway. But yeah.
- 1:13:28Mountain biking, that's. Devo yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:13:31I mean. It's like culture.
- 1:13:33I have like my 2 minute pitch on to what Devo is down and like
- 1:13:36that was like you asked me like what is Devo?
- 1:13:38And I was like, oh. And see, I think.
- 1:13:40How I'm gonna free form this but?
- 1:13:42And that's. More. 7 minutes tomorrow, yeah.
- 1:13:45Yeah, for sure. And the devo part of like that,
- 1:13:48like from the, you know, kindergarten or whatever, like
- 1:13:52young into like all the way up and more development and stuff,
- 1:13:55right? Cuz devo short for development
- 1:13:57right? It's like what a lot of cycling
- 1:13:59programs use. And when Sarah got here, she's
- 1:14:01like, feel free to steal that. Actually, Devo sounds nice.
- 1:14:04I'm like it does. Yeah, do that, yeah.
- 1:14:06And that makes it feel like it is part of this whole, right?
- 1:14:10Bigger thing, development. Program, Yeah.
- 1:14:12And that's, I feel like where I really want that centered, you
- 1:14:16know, and I'm not saying like I want the Nica too, because I
- 1:14:20think that's such a good program to have as well.
- 1:14:23But that's where I like I got my kids.
- 1:14:25I got to get them going. And yeah, Sean would be more
- 1:14:29involved and yeah, you can. The bike shop, the kids meet up,
- 1:14:32right? Yeah, like we're gonna meet at
- 1:14:33the B St. jumps or whatever, like half an hour, 45 cents.
- 1:14:38You know, it doesn't have to be. That's what I learned too, is
- 1:14:41like to be on a mountain bike. You don't have to be in the
- 1:14:44mountains necessarily. Yeah, you just be ripping and
- 1:14:47doing. You just have to.
- 1:14:47Be riding with like a group of people that that you enjoy being
- 1:14:50around. Yeah.
- 1:14:51You know, you don't have to be riding like some of the little
- 1:14:53kids will just like have the best they they might remember
- 1:14:56like splashing in Bear Creek as their debo experience.
- 1:14:59And then like their parents ask them in the next semester, do
- 1:15:01you want to sign up? And they say, yeah, hopefully,
- 1:15:04you know, and like, you get a lot of kids who come back year
- 1:15:09after year, semester after semester.
- 1:15:12Yeah, that's cool. I love that part of it, love
- 1:15:14that component. Yeah, and you know, it's.
- 1:15:17And it's March, guys, yeah. So it's really kind of weird.
- 1:15:20I feel like at least GP yeah, GPS coming out of the
- 1:15:24hibernation hole so. Yeah, it's it's about time.
- 1:15:27I mean, we've kind of just with the low snow here, it's been
- 1:15:30kind of like a year round deal which.
- 1:15:32That's been great. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:15:33It's not good for my favorite. Yeah, I need the.
- 1:15:36I need, like, the seasons. I need them because I'm gonna be
- 1:15:40on my bike so much, you know, starting right after spring
- 1:15:44break that like I can't, I burn out.
- 1:15:48I know, I know it when I'm burning out.
- 1:15:50And like, I'll go, I have a question.
- 1:15:52I'll go. I'll coach, you know, like two
- 1:15:55or three days a week. But in my spare time, like, I
- 1:15:57will not ride my bike. Like I'll go run.
- 1:16:00Yeah, yeah, yeah, that nice balance.
- 1:16:02Yeah, I'm I also have a love for trail running.
- 1:16:06Ask your question and we have to ask our core question.
- 1:16:09And then we got to get rolling. Yeah.
- 1:16:10OK. So I was like every time I see
- 1:16:13like the no snow up at Mount Ashland, I always comment on
- 1:16:16like the I'm like, you guys really need to capitalize on
- 1:16:19those mountain biking, you know, in the summertime, like get the
- 1:16:22get the runs up and get those, get all, you know, get the
- 1:16:24things rolling up there. I would love to see Mount
- 1:16:27Ashland kind of capitalize on mountain biking more.
- 1:16:29Yeah, I definitely think that would be really good for the
- 1:16:35area. I just don't think, I think
- 1:16:37there's like enough red tape with the federal government in
- 1:16:40the way that the Mount Ashland ski leases and like the
- 1:16:44designation, yeah. It's a little different.
- 1:16:46The watershed being like a gosh, there's a name for it.
- 1:16:50Marshall probably knows LRA or something.
- 1:16:55Anyways, it's got some special designation that makes it really
- 1:16:59hard to build new things or use whatever I know.
- 1:17:04And it's like such a shame because the terrain is really
- 1:17:07good up there. It's like way different.
- 1:17:08It's like sub Alpine. So there's a lot of rock and and
- 1:17:12more Tahoe style. Yeah, it's my favorite.
- 1:17:14It's my favorite ride in the like.
- 1:17:17I love the Ashland ride. There's like a couple spots
- 1:17:21where you could put the sweetest loops, like if you ever climbed
- 1:17:23out to time warp, if you had like a way to get back down to
- 1:17:26the South and grab a fire road and just like do a loop up
- 1:17:29there. Like that would be a great ride
- 1:17:31in itself. And you're not even going out to
- 1:17:34time warp and dropping into the watershed.
- 1:17:35I think the opportunities only exist really in a feasible way
- 1:17:41on the Klamath side, because right there it splits the
- 1:17:43Klamath side to South side. And the Siskiyou's is the Rogue
- 1:17:50River, Siskiyou is the north side.
- 1:17:52And there's just too many. Too much red.
- 1:17:54Yeah, totally. Marshall mentioned something we
- 1:17:58just recorded with Marshall last Monday.
- 1:18:00He won't see this in the, you know, show.
- 1:18:03Like cuz we're gonna splice up who comes.
- 1:18:06Who's this? Episode's already out.
- 1:18:07Oh yeah, Marshall's is already out.
- 1:18:08OK, anyway, But he was mentioning the like kind of not
- 1:18:13necessarily like lack of mountain biking community, but
- 1:18:16like a little bit broken as far as like he was mentioning that
- 1:18:20sometimes it's hard to get like a community together.
- 1:18:24Like there's Ashland mountain biking, there's Grants Pass
- 1:18:27Mountain. No, not not like that.
- 1:18:28No, even just in Ashland, he was saying just being on RV MB A and
- 1:18:31like, you know, having these meet ups and like little events
- 1:18:34here and there to kind of bring the community together.
- 1:18:36He notices kind of a lack of like, I don't know, camaraderie
- 1:18:41with like, individuals and like all coming together to mountain
- 1:18:45bike. Do you experience that?
- 1:18:46Do you see that? I mean, you're on the youth
- 1:18:48side, so there's a lot of community.
- 1:18:49For sure, yeah. And it's basically like relative
- 1:18:55to other mountain bike communities, I'd say, whereas
- 1:18:57like you go to Bellingham and like the local businesses are,
- 1:19:05are like calling you to give you money, you know.
- 1:19:07Yeah. And I'm not saying like that's
- 1:19:10what RVNBA is trying to do, but I was on the board of RVNBA at
- 1:19:16one point and it's it's sometimes a struggle because
- 1:19:20there's these perceptions of who's on the board are
- 1:19:22representing the current iteration of mountain bikers.
- 1:19:27So like maybe somebody, maybe a shop owner had a disagreement
- 1:19:31with somebody who's like on the board now and they're like, oh,
- 1:19:33we don't, we're not going to donate money to that.
- 1:19:35We're going to go do this thing instead or this business is
- 1:19:39doing the same thing. So then all of a sudden you have
- 1:19:41like a bunch of people like in their own little subgroups and
- 1:19:46oh, it's all, it's been this way forever, so why would we try to
- 1:19:48change it now? And this, whatever part of that
- 1:19:52comes from, I think, I know we're blessed with good trails
- 1:19:56here, but like they all are in one area and there's like
- 1:19:59basically 2 main routes to get out on that side.
- 1:20:02There's not enough. So everybody gets fixated on
- 1:20:05these single trails and there's like.
- 1:20:09Some tension can develop because people have different ideas of
- 1:20:12what those trails should look like and who should be running
- 1:20:15them. You know who should be managing
- 1:20:16it? So interesting.
- 1:20:19Yeah, it's there is a dynamic. Do you think it's just like
- 1:20:21Ashland ego? Yeah, part of it.
- 1:20:24Yeah. Like just like when you said
- 1:20:26like, oh, some business owner doesn't like somebody that was
- 1:20:29on, so they had a disagreement or some sort of a yeah.
- 1:20:31I think a lot of it's like you guys just put Eagle away from
- 1:20:34mountain biking. Well.
- 1:20:36Like, you know, mountain biking can be pretty artistical as it
- 1:20:40is for whatever reasons. And yeah, I think it's not just
- 1:20:43businesses, but it's it's people who you would expect would want
- 1:20:47to, you know, help out. Or my favorite is like when when
- 1:20:52you put in all this volunteer time and effort to go put a
- 1:20:56trail work day on, you get it done and you have this great
- 1:20:58turn out, everyone's positive. And then like every time you're
- 1:21:02going to get an e-mail from somebody who has never, they'd
- 1:21:05get a blister just looking at a shovel, you know, but they're
- 1:21:07going to like start burning. Well, why did you change this
- 1:21:10berm here? It should be this way like
- 1:21:12keyboard warriors. And like, I can't believe you
- 1:21:15just sent me this e-mail, you know, like just would never.
- 1:21:19And there's a lot of people, like who like, would never go
- 1:21:22out and help out and, like, try to make stuff better around
- 1:21:26them. But they're going to be the
- 1:21:27first to comment on what's wrong with what you did.
- 1:21:30And it's pretty wild and. It's everywhere for sure.
- 1:21:33Yeah, that's when you got to pick your battles and just like,
- 1:21:37let it go. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:21:40Yeah. And I'm pretty good at like,
- 1:21:41letting that kind of stuff go. Yeah.
- 1:21:43Skills and like whatever, If you don't, if you don't, we're all
- 1:21:46here. Like, you know, people for Diva
- 1:21:48Devon, this is like less egregious, but they'll be like,
- 1:21:52oh, can you do this on this certain day?
- 1:21:54Like I only can make this certain day work Or you know,
- 1:22:02you know, you put that event at a really bad time for for the
- 1:22:05kids who are doing this activity.
- 1:22:07I'm like, sorry, like what? I mean, I'm not going to change
- 1:22:10it. And like I'm going to take
- 1:22:12feedback where I can and make my programs better, but like I need
- 1:22:15to accommodate my coaches, my instructors and my staff before.
- 1:22:20And if you want to make it a priority, you'll make it a
- 1:22:22priority. But.
- 1:22:24Yeah, totally. Otherwise like.
- 1:22:26It's kind of back to you. Like you just do it.
- 1:22:28When you can do it and when you want to do it.
- 1:22:30And those who can join, will join and those who can't.
- 1:22:33Yeah. Sorry, you can't meet everybody.
- 1:22:35You can't meet everyone's needs. And like, that's what that's
- 1:22:37what's like, I just have to like turn that, shut that off, like
- 1:22:42I'm not going to meet everyone's needs and that's OK.
- 1:22:45Yeah, they can start their own club, yeah, for sure.
- 1:22:48They have that prerogative. Well, then, but that's what ends
- 1:22:50up happening though. It's like, yes, that's great and
- 1:22:54everybody starts their own thing.
- 1:22:56But then I feel like and then every all these associations are
- 1:22:59like not working together to to make a bigger collective point
- 1:23:04or bigger collective come together on a certain trail
- 1:23:06system or yadda, yadda, vice versa.
- 1:23:09It's just like that's ends up and it's just like too many of
- 1:23:12these subgroups when really if we we could all just work
- 1:23:14together, we could get more done.
- 1:23:15I know. The most successful
- 1:23:17organizations are communities that are like, they trust the
- 1:23:21organization, so they're all on the same page.
- 1:23:23And also the alliance idea of like so Sierra Buttes, Trail
- 1:23:29Stewardship, Downeyville area and like Northern Sierras, they
- 1:23:32have like hikers, snowmobilers, Moto, mountain biker, all in the
- 1:23:37same all kinds. Of trail users and that.
- 1:23:40They're just, like, raking in money from all these different
- 1:23:43funding sources, like Caltrans and, like, big OHP money.
- 1:23:47And they're super successful and like, yeah, the subgroup thing
- 1:23:51and like, the bickering and the infighting is just, like,
- 1:23:54counterproductive, yeah. Because it makes it would make
- 1:23:56sense if there's a club that can meet on Wednesdays and a club
- 1:24:00that can meet on Fridays and so. But then you maybe do something
- 1:24:03together too. Things together or you at least
- 1:24:05communicate or you like pull the same fundraising and.
- 1:24:10Yeah. Yeah, and not like you.
- 1:24:12Get a lot more dumb. I work with them, but I.
- 1:24:14Don't. It takes a really good organizer
- 1:24:15to pull that together, yeah. Like.
- 1:24:17Manage personalities. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:20It comes down to managing personalities for sure.
- 1:24:22Yeah, that's not like a paid position in itself.
- 1:24:25Yeah, you know, it's a full time job.
- 1:24:26Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:28Well, let's, we are, we are getting to the end of our
- 1:24:31allotted time here. So that's our, our core question
- 1:24:36is share with us. I mean, it really does sound
- 1:24:39like most of your life has been oriented in the outdoors and
- 1:24:43outdoor opportunities have redirected your path in life and
- 1:24:46guided you every which way. But has there been one
- 1:24:50particular moment or experience that really, really change the
- 1:24:56course of your life or change the way that you look at
- 1:24:58yourself for the world? Yeah, this, you kind of summed
- 1:25:02it up is like it's kind of just been a constant and I, I kind of
- 1:25:06struggled with, you know, one thing, but I know you guys
- 1:25:10wanted to hear something so yeah, I.
- 1:25:15OK, here, let me help you. Let me help you.
- 1:25:17Have you ever taken a big like Backcountry fall on your bike or
- 1:25:20something? And it's been like a, it was
- 1:25:23just like really crazy or sort of big energy or like maybe
- 1:25:26seeing a wild animal. Setbacks, I mean, I yeah, I, I
- 1:25:31honestly think like my biggest like singular, like aha moments
- 1:25:36for me where I am now. I think so maybe less my, my
- 1:25:39life, but like my family is like watching my girls like thrive on
- 1:25:43like on like a ski run where I'm behind them or like where I'm
- 1:25:49riding bikes with them. And then the points where they
- 1:25:53like started to develop more skill than I have.
- 1:25:56And I could just see the stoke being passed.
- 1:25:59Like it's almost like they're like sucking the skill out of
- 1:26:02me, you know, cuz you ride at their pace, right?
- 1:26:04And like then you forget how to ride at your pace, but they get
- 1:26:08better and then all of a sudden they're like.
- 1:26:10So I think like just that experience has been like the
- 1:26:14most like the coolest thing to like, cuz it's like the ultimate
- 1:26:19flow state. Like you're not just in your
- 1:26:20flow state, but you're in like the family.
- 1:26:24It's like playing music with somebody totally, you know, and
- 1:26:26you're like, I don't know, I, I wish I had a really cool story
- 1:26:30for you guys. I mean, I've had a lot of fun
- 1:26:33experience, like, you know, wild, like the first time on a
- 1:26:36wildland fire is just like mind blowing because you're just in
- 1:26:42this environment you're used to, but it's on fire, it's night
- 1:26:46time and there's like noises and sounds and sights that like
- 1:26:51aren't normal. And you know, that was those
- 1:26:57were like formative moments for outdoors of like, not only am I
- 1:27:01like recreating the outdoors, but I'm like a part of this
- 1:27:04phenomenon of like fire and like change.
- 1:27:08And that's always been really cool to me.
- 1:27:11Yeah, that's a cool point. Yeah, that's a good answer.
- 1:27:15Yeah. And like, I'm really drawn to
- 1:27:18things that like people have experienced like in different
- 1:27:23past generations. So like, that's probably a bad
- 1:27:28way to explain it, but this will make sense.
- 1:27:29Is like being out there on a fire with like, just like an axe
- 1:27:35and you're like digging the dirt and you're like, oh, someone in
- 1:27:37the 1850s did this exact same thing.
- 1:27:40And it still works today. And those things are hard to
- 1:27:43find in today's works. Everything's automated or AI or
- 1:27:46even just like phones. Like it's like.
- 1:27:48Gas powered. The experiences we're living now
- 1:27:51aren't like the same as they were, but I think there's so
- 1:27:55many lessons, like we were like, probably tougher as like a human
- 1:27:58race, at least Americans, you know, back in those times.
- 1:28:01So like, I try to find those experiences that give me that
- 1:28:05feeling and they're hard to find.
- 1:28:06But yeah, the wildland fire thing was one of them where I
- 1:28:08was like, and also that's why I like trail running because like,
- 1:28:12I don't have this big fancy bike, which is super fun, but
- 1:28:15it's still, you know, a bike and everyone's trying to sell you
- 1:28:19upgrades and this and that. But like trail running or
- 1:28:21hiking, like you're just throwing your shoes on and like
- 1:28:24it's like the most pure feeling for me of like being out there
- 1:28:27with like barely any gear. Just you.
- 1:28:31And I like that too. Sean's always questioning.
- 1:28:35He's like, well, why don't you take your bike out?
- 1:28:36And I'm like, there's just something different about trail
- 1:28:38running, man. Like it's lower.
- 1:28:40It's just a different it sounds. More right feel the the earth.
- 1:28:46It's a different, it's a completely different experience.
- 1:28:48Well, now that he had his calf, he just tore a muscle in his
- 1:28:50calf really bad. He's like, maybe I need to
- 1:28:53diversify and I'm like, yeah, maybe.
- 1:28:56If I'm like struggling with like a devo program or like something
- 1:29:01a question that came up and I go for a run, it has to be over 30
- 1:29:05minutes I found. But I get in this mindset flip
- 1:29:09where I'm like, my best ideas come when I'm driving.
- 1:29:14Me too. Me too.
- 1:29:15Oh my God, that's where good. High five.
- 1:29:17Yeah, that was good. So I was.
- 1:29:19Gonna ask for it when I was. Like when I the when I had my
- 1:29:23aha moment when I was trail running that I needed to sell my
- 1:29:26catering company and by the bike shop, there you go.
- 1:29:29And it was just like this, like so much clarity.
- 1:29:32Yeah, I can't find it in biking that the.
- 1:29:35It's this not the same complexity?
- 1:29:37It still does. It still does a lot for me.
- 1:29:39It's like I got it for a bike rider.
- 1:29:42It's something about the pace and like where your heart, I
- 1:29:46don't know, there's gotta be. Something.
- 1:29:47Yeah, it's well also. It's about bilateral movement,
- 1:29:50but that is. Like real.
- 1:29:52Processing and nervous system calming and it absolutely does
- 1:29:56get you in a close and of clarity.
- 1:29:59The trail running, I'm like, I really love being by myself
- 1:30:02because of that reason of the clarity.
- 1:30:04And I like mountain biking for the like community aspect in
- 1:30:09writing with other people. That's where I get all my stoke.
- 1:30:12And so I'm not thinking about this.
- 1:30:13I'm not processing the same things on my mind because I'm
- 1:30:16more just like interacting with my group too while I'm writing.
- 1:30:19That makes sense. So it's this like different
- 1:30:21experience? I don't like trail running with
- 1:30:22other people. No hail freaking no, this is.
- 1:30:25Something. To my trail.
- 1:30:26Go on. Sorry guys.
- 1:30:27I. Have friends who go on group
- 1:30:29runs and I'm like I just the pace is just too different.
- 1:30:33Yeah, yeah, I don't mind. I don't mind trail running with
- 1:30:37a group if it's like, you know, like I have, obviously, but and
- 1:30:41it's fun when it comes like every once in a while, but like
- 1:30:43the daily grind that I used to. I haven't been on the trail in a
- 1:30:46while, but yeah, it's like it's something special.
- 1:30:50Yeah, it's it's, it's you time. Yeah.
- 1:30:53It's when you get to like actually hear yourself and get
- 1:30:57in touch with yourself. And and that's where, yeah, we
- 1:31:00come up with. All the ideas, all the best.
- 1:31:03Ones we see the truth in our experiences when we're on our
- 1:31:07own a. 100%. Yeah.
- 1:31:09I feel like I flopped the big question.
- 1:31:11No, no, it was great. See, that's what it's just meant
- 1:31:13to do is just like random. But here's another question.
- 1:31:17When you pass away one day, how do you want to be remembered?
- 1:31:22Oh man. Like how quick that was.
- 1:31:24Usually it's a little bit more elaborate.
- 1:31:28Yeah, no, I just hope that people who are around me, like
- 1:31:32keep doing kind of like, you know, if I I just, I can't think
- 1:31:38of anything out of my kids, right.
- 1:31:39Right, that's how I'm me too. So yeah, I love my wife, but
- 1:31:44there's probably some like positives that will come when
- 1:31:47I'm gone for her. Like little things, just like
- 1:31:51the, you know, like the little Silver Linings, right?
- 1:31:55Like, Oh no, more like clean up his messes when he I was looking
- 1:31:59for a bike ride and like I got some room back in the garage.
- 1:32:02No more calls that he crashed his bike, Yeah.
- 1:32:04Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
- 1:32:06I mean, hopefully that's like, but I'm not.
- 1:32:08Decades. In the.
- 1:32:09Future where that's like not an everyday thing the.
- 1:32:11Point is, like, I don't think I'm going to be passing anything
- 1:32:14to her, right? Like we're like, you know, we're
- 1:32:17not. I don't make.
- 1:32:19She's not your light legacy. Yeah, sure.
- 1:32:21Yeah, I'm gonna. Clear that up.
- 1:32:23But yeah, with my girl. Allison, he still loves you.
- 1:32:26Yeah. With my girls, yeah, I just want
- 1:32:28them to. I really just want them
- 1:32:30honestly. Like my main thing is I want
- 1:32:32them to like try harder things. And like, work hard and.
- 1:32:36Yeah, yeah, of course, like Thrive, but I think you get that
- 1:32:39from like learning to to work hard and try and persist and
- 1:32:43figure things out. And it's not like anyone
- 1:32:47activity that can do that. But for me it's been the
- 1:32:49outdoors. But yeah, I think like whatever,
- 1:32:54whatever they do, just like do it 100%.
- 1:32:58I was like thinking about that the other day, like if I was
- 1:33:02like on my death bed, what would I want to tell them, you know?
- 1:33:05And I just be like don't give up.
- 1:33:07Do it 100,000% baby. And it's it's, it's sounds so
- 1:33:10silly, but like it's so it's true.
- 1:33:12It is. I have so many chances to like
- 1:33:15give up and like stop doing Devo, but like, or move, you
- 1:33:20know, even. And it's just, I want to see how
- 1:33:24the story of Devo plays out. I was like, so like, yeah, I
- 1:33:27just got to keep moving forward. So my dad always used to say
- 1:33:30like he's, he's just like, it doesn't matter what you're doing
- 1:33:34as long as you're moving, like keep moving forward.
- 1:33:36Don't be stagnant. I have the 1% every day.
- 1:33:39Just do you know, be better like every day try to be better, like
- 1:33:431% better at least like just. Yeah, and you have your off
- 1:33:46days, sure, but like. 100% looks.
- 1:33:49Different every day, generally like you, if you're moving in a
- 1:33:52positive direction, like your days are going to be positive
- 1:33:55too, so. Yeah, even the down ones.
- 1:33:57I hope I have enough time to say all that on my deathbed.
- 1:34:01Well, there it's, it's recorded here.
- 1:34:04We'll send it to 4 words out. Yeah.
- 1:34:08So when or actually it's the. What's your Do you have a
- 1:34:13favorite piece of outdoor gear? That's the one.
- 1:34:15That you that you have with you either what you're doing or on
- 1:34:20your during your favorite outdoor activity.
- 1:34:25I definitely have like my brands, like I always get the
- 1:34:28ultra trail runners. Oh yeah, they're kind of
- 1:34:31minimus, but I have some hip issues and like anything with
- 1:34:34the big drop is going to mess me up.
- 1:34:36So these they're not super durable, but they don't make me
- 1:34:42hurt when I run. So I love these shoes.
- 1:34:45I'm in the market for some new shoes.
- 1:34:48I don't think everybody would love these.
- 1:34:50Well, I'm coming from the Nike trail.
- 1:34:52To them if you've been in like. I don't know.
- 1:34:55Or soccer or anything else, you kind of have to take it easy
- 1:34:58getting and I've. Been in the.
- 1:34:59Good transition shoe to then be like super minimalist, yeah.
- 1:35:04Well, I came from the zeros, yeah yeah, I came from the
- 1:35:07barefoot 5 right? The five finger barefoot shoes.
- 1:35:11I was running in those forever and then I was like, I mean,
- 1:35:13where's the port? Cuz I keep having some weird
- 1:35:15things going on and I went to the running store here and I got
- 1:35:20fitted for and they fitted me in the Nike trail shout.
- 1:35:24Out Rogue Valley runners. Yeah, shout out.
- 1:35:26You guys did good. I always tell anybody whenever I
- 1:35:28Yeah, that's what people. Are like they carry they carry
- 1:35:30ultras too. They do, and that's where I
- 1:35:33would go get. I just threw away my my Nike
- 1:35:37trails because my Nike trails the like gum on the bottom of
- 1:35:40them like hardened really bad and had like a really like it
- 1:35:44that got old. The like sole rubber.
- 1:35:46It was weird, but I love them and I never had any weird issues
- 1:35:51that I was having in my barefoot runners.
- 1:35:54So that's cool. Yeah, I don't get too attached
- 1:36:00to things. Oh my, I got 1.
- 1:36:02OK, let's hear it. My ice axe.
- 1:36:05What's that? My ice axe is for
- 1:36:07mountaineering. Oh my ice axe.
- 1:36:09OK. Yeah, and what?
- 1:36:10Did you hear? I don't know.
- 1:36:12I didn't. I didn't hear it.
- 1:36:13I heard something funky. I heard like a weird brand and I
- 1:36:16was like, what's that mean? Yeah, I'm not like any pro level
- 1:36:21Mountaineer or anything, but I really love to get in the
- 1:36:23mountains and split board and like I've climbed Shasta 5 or 6
- 1:36:27times and done McLaughlin in the winter and whatever.
- 1:36:33Mount Whitney's house sister, all that stuff.
- 1:36:35But that thing that's legitimate to save my life.
- 1:36:38Yeah, I got into some hairy conditions on Mount Bailey with
- 1:36:42some friends and had to do like full speed self arrest at like
- 1:36:4730 miles. This is actually probably gum.
- 1:36:49Gum we we'll make time for this one.
- 1:36:54Yeah, so, so yeah, we're. I know I was just sitting here
- 1:36:57and like oh shit, excuse. Me.
- 1:36:59Excuse me, Sir. It's a good story, but I guess I
- 1:37:01don't like to think about it too much.
- 1:37:03But yeah, went out to Mount Bailey on a Hut trip with some
- 1:37:09friends. So we we got just one Hut.
- 1:37:12So you go to, you basically do your runs and you come back and
- 1:37:15you stay at the Hut and yeah, we got into some really good stuff
- 1:37:20and it was facing north, really stable pow, no avalanche danger.
- 1:37:24Morning. And yeah, we end up like wanting
- 1:37:28to check out the north side of Mount Bailey, which is
- 1:37:29traditionally like, I mean, it's kind of like the steepest runs
- 1:37:33there. The north facing is the best
- 1:37:35powder in North America at least because it's protected from the
- 1:37:38sun and it gets really, it stays cold over there.
- 1:37:43So we get up there with a group of four of us.
- 1:37:47They're all skiers, but I'm on a split board, so I have one less
- 1:37:50edge. Don't do a foreshadowing.
- 1:37:53I don't do as well in the icy conditions and like, all right,
- 1:37:57let's just poke our heads over, over that Knoll.
- 1:37:59So like the Knoll kind of starts like this and kind of just picks
- 1:38:03up a little gradient, but it's not bad.
- 1:38:06And at the top, for whatever reason, I probably because I
- 1:38:10hadn't been there before and I'm pretty good risk management
- 1:38:14style of recreating. I pull up my ice axe and I just
- 1:38:19start snowboarding down and my skier friend gets like 50 yards
- 1:38:22below me and he kind of looks around and turns around and
- 1:38:25gives like the X like go that way.
- 1:38:27We're not going to do this today.
- 1:38:29So what happened? This ice lens had like formed
- 1:38:32and it wasn't like a solid thing of the ice is like these little
- 1:38:34ice balls, but like very consistent all the way through
- 1:38:38and like some somehow the temperature had spiked or
- 1:38:41something. And it, it does that, you know,
- 1:38:43like weird stuff happens and things have to align to be able
- 1:38:46to hit something safely. Anyway, so I start going down
- 1:38:49and and I'm still like on train that's not very steep, but I'm
- 1:38:54like, oh, this is a little icy. And I try to stop and I kind of
- 1:38:58slide out and I just fall and I don't move.
- 1:39:01I'm like, oh, that was weird. This is like really icy.
- 1:39:04I get up again and, and I I'm trying now to traverse on my
- 1:39:08heel edge to the right to this Knoll where it's like super safe
- 1:39:11and I can get to another aspect facing east or something.
- 1:39:15And I slip again. I'm like, uh oh.
- 1:39:20And that time I'm like trying to get up, but I'm like slipping as
- 1:39:23I'm getting up. And so I have my ice axe, which
- 1:39:25is about this long and I have it buried so I can't go anywhere.
- 1:39:30And I'm like, OK, I'm going to have to like think about how I
- 1:39:33stand up, pull the ice X out without slipping.
- 1:39:37I do it again. I slip again.
- 1:39:38And I'm like, now I'm like getting a little nervous and.
- 1:39:41And you're essentially alone. Like well, my friends are below
- 1:39:44me and. They can't see you.
- 1:39:46They can see me. OK, Yeah.
- 1:39:47And they're kind of over to safety, kind of watching me.
- 1:39:50OK, They can see me, but they can't really help me at the
- 1:39:52moment. So then I, so then I, I'm like,
- 1:39:57OK, I have to stand up and I have to get over there.
- 1:40:00This is like my big shot, you know?
- 1:40:02And so I stand up. And I start going and I slip,
- 1:40:07but this time I had a little more speed because I was trying
- 1:40:09to reverse hard and I just start sliding and I'm like, oh shit.
- 1:40:14So you practice self arrest technique, which is self arrest
- 1:40:18is like stopping yourself with your ice axe.
- 1:40:20That's why you have the ice axe. So I bury that thing in the ice
- 1:40:24and I'm like hauling ass down the hill like out of freaking
- 1:40:27movie. And I'm just like, and as I'm
- 1:40:31putting all my weight into this axe, I feel my rib muscles start
- 1:40:35to pull. Like I'm like, oh, God.
- 1:40:40So now I have like, these pulled muscles.
- 1:40:42And I slide probably like 5050 feet.
- 1:40:47And I'm at this point I'm like 50 feet from this huge edge that
- 1:40:51goes like 2000 feet. Oh, my God.
- 1:40:53Yeah. And it it's not like a Cliff
- 1:40:56where I would die. Honestly, it could have been
- 1:40:58like smooth snow on the other side.
- 1:41:00I could have been fine. But in my mind, like, that was
- 1:41:03death, right? Like, no fall zone.
- 1:41:05And my friends are looking up and they're like, all right,
- 1:41:08that's that's good enough. Like, we're going to come get
- 1:41:10you. So I'm just sitting there like
- 1:41:14ice axe buried. My ribs are on fire, you know,
- 1:41:17And, and now I'm cramping at, I'm shaking because I'm like, Oh
- 1:41:20yeah. Linda.
- 1:41:21And like I'm cramping everywhere.
- 1:41:23Have you stopped moving? I'm not moving anymore.
- 1:41:25Yeah. Done sliding.
- 1:41:26Yeah. And so they are able to take
- 1:41:28their skis off. They put boot crampons on.
- 1:41:31Thank God they had those in their pack because you don't
- 1:41:32always bring those. And but I only go with people
- 1:41:36who are pretty prepared. Yeah.
- 1:41:39And they hike up to me. They're kicking steps in the
- 1:41:43snow, right in the ice. And with the crampons, they're
- 1:41:45pretty bomb proof. So they're able to get to me.
- 1:41:47They cut me like a path and took my snowboard and we, like,
- 1:41:51walked out the 75 yards to get to the knob and then dropped,
- 1:41:56dropped safely back. And yeah, I still get like a pit
- 1:42:00in my stomach talking about it. Yeah.
- 1:42:02Yeah, I could see. Trauma.
- 1:42:03Body posture. Like changed.
- 1:42:06In yeah, it was. It was.
- 1:42:09It was honestly like terrifying and I thought I was being
- 1:42:14careful and I was, and things can still go wrong.
- 1:42:17Yeah, even when you're being careful.
- 1:42:20You think you're in control of outside.
- 1:42:23You're like you're not, and outside doesn't care about you
- 1:42:25either. Like it's just there and like it
- 1:42:28doesn't care if it kills you. It doesn't care if you have a
- 1:42:30good time. Yeah, it has no conscience.
- 1:42:32Has no conscience. Well, that's like the river.
- 1:42:34It's like you can be the safest on there and then like
- 1:42:36somebody's still like a river guy.
- 1:42:38It is drowning it. Or you hear of that happening
- 1:42:41and you're like, but how they're the safest people.
- 1:42:43And it's like because you don't have any control sometimes.
- 1:42:45Yeah, it's like you've got to. Just that experience for me is
- 1:42:47like I don't have control and like I don't even know.
- 1:42:54Like it definitely made me scared but I don't even know
- 1:42:59like what I would have. I feel like I did the right
- 1:43:01things. Like I waited for my friends,
- 1:43:03that my friends did the right things.
- 1:43:06Well, obviously you did the right thing because you're alive
- 1:43:08today and you're or you didn't break a major like if you fell
- 1:43:14and something I don't know. Right, right.
- 1:43:15I didn't have any like serious injuries.
- 1:43:17I was able to snowboard the next, like finish snowboarding
- 1:43:20and then like keep keep the trip going.
- 1:43:22It didn't, yeah. It didn't scare you out of no
- 1:43:24doing that activity again. It definitely.
- 1:43:29Didn't teach you a lesson? I I feel like I'm a little more
- 1:43:33scared of like firm conditions, which is kind of like spring
- 1:43:37springtime, which I coincidentally don't have as
- 1:43:39much time to because the devo starts up.
- 1:43:41Anyway, but this weather is like kind of giving us weird
- 1:43:45conditions. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:43:48Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:43:50So just like, I don't know, it was really scary.
- 1:43:51I thought I was going to die. I came home and looked at Google
- 1:43:54Earth and it was like, that is so gnarly looking, you know?
- 1:43:58You're like, would I have died like?
- 1:44:00Yeah. And I was like looking on Google
- 1:44:02Earth and I started to feel queasy and I'm like, I need to
- 1:44:06anyways, Yeah, yeah. So I don't know if that's like.
- 1:44:10That's a great story. That's what we were looking for
- 1:44:11a bit. That's what they were looking
- 1:44:13for. So that ice axe is like, my
- 1:44:14favorite because I look at that thing just hanging there and I,
- 1:44:17you know, I've used it a handful of times since then.
- 1:44:20That was probably four years ago.
- 1:44:22And I'm like, yeah, this is my favorite piece of equipment.
- 1:44:27Sick. Yeah.
- 1:44:28That's awesome. I was going to ask you to, we
- 1:44:30got to wrap it up, but what's like a piece, like a tool that
- 1:44:33you always bring on mountain biking rides?
- 1:44:35Like, what's the one thing that you're always bringing?
- 1:44:37So. Do you even bring any tools?
- 1:44:38Some people don't, but then I know worse.
- 1:44:40Because all I do is harp in the kids like you have to bring your
- 1:44:45retired, your required, not your retired, your required items on
- 1:44:48every ride. And then but when I ride my
- 1:44:52bike, I generally just bring like a snack and like if, if I
- 1:44:59get OK. So there's a couple variables.
- 1:45:01There's a. Couple factors in play and the
- 1:45:05kids definitely don't have attention span to make it this
- 1:45:07far into the thing anyway so none of the kids will see this.
- 1:45:11Part their parents, though. Their parents might, but the
- 1:45:15trails are set up here where you go up and then you go down and
- 1:45:18there's roads everywhere. So I never feel on these rides
- 1:45:23in Ashland that I'm gonna get stuck somewhere that I can't
- 1:45:25just walk out of. And to me, I really like the the
- 1:45:29minimalist feel when I ride a bike.
- 1:45:31I hate a big pack and I don't like the feel on my shoulders
- 1:45:35and I can't ride as fast as I want to on the downhills or the
- 1:45:37skills I want to work on because of the way the pack is shifting.
- 1:45:41So it's almost like this is my two, maybe 2 rides a year
- 1:45:45sacrifice to the mountain bike gods if I don't bring the tools
- 1:45:49and I'm just like, well, that's just how the ride went today and
- 1:45:51that's OK. But if I have a multi tool in
- 1:45:54the car I'll generally just put my pocket.
- 1:45:56Yeah, totally. That's multi tool, yeah, I.
- 1:45:58Rarely bring. All the stuff to.
- 1:46:01Fix a flat tire, Yeah, but it's also no.
- 1:46:03Plugs to get them find plugs out there's.
- 1:46:05Also, not a lot of rocks here like these are like the most
- 1:46:07rocks you'll see. And the chances of somebody else
- 1:46:09riding by in a decent amount of time that could help you is
- 1:46:13probably pretty high. That too or.
- 1:46:15You. Yeah, you just.
- 1:46:15If I was in real trouble, yeah. But yeah, like, I mean, I can
- 1:46:22run every trail like in the watershed or whatever, and it's
- 1:46:25like, well, I can walk my bike too.
- 1:46:27It's still exercise. Same.
- 1:46:30Same. Totally.
- 1:46:32Well, anywho, if we're going to wrap it up, but if you want to
- 1:46:37be found or anybody's interested in getting involved with Devo or

- 1:47:08modern day, like wallet photos. Yes, yes.
- 1:47:10Yes. So.
- 1:47:11Awesome. You won't see me doing, like,
- 1:47:14mediocre things. You'll see, like my kids doing
- 1:47:16really cool things. Mm.
- 1:47:18Hmm. Yeah.
- 1:47:18Yeah, cool. It's the fun.
