Speaker 1: Tumbling in the dark on the wooden pavement, but continually
• 0:03
Speaker 1: looking for something on the right side of the street.
• 0:06
Speaker 1: He had noticed, passing through this street lately that there
• 0:09
Speaker 1: was a hotel somewhere towards the end, built of wood,
• 0:12
Speaker 1: but fairly large, and its name, he remembered, was something
• 0:16
Speaker 1: like Andreanople. He was not mistaken. The hotel was so
• 0:20
Speaker 1: conspicuous in that god forsaken place that he could not
• 0:24
Speaker 1: fail to see it even in the dark. It was
• 0:27
Speaker 1: a long, blackened, wooden building, and in spite of the
• 0:30
Speaker 1: late hour, there were lights on in the windows and
• 0:32
Speaker 1: signs of life within. He went in and asked a
• 0:36
Speaker 1: ragged fellow who met him in the corridor for a room.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: The latter scanning, Svidrigailov pulled himself together and led him
• 0:43
Speaker 1: at once to a close and tiny room in the
• 0:45
Speaker 1: distance at the end of the corridor. Under the stairs.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: There was no other All were occupied. The ragged fellow
• 0:53
Speaker 1: looked inquiringly. Is there tea? Asked Svidrigailov, Yes, sir, what
• 1:00
Speaker 1: else is there? Veal? Vodka? Savory's bring me tea and veal,
• 1:07
Speaker 1: And you want nothing else, he asked, with apparent surprise.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Nothing nothing, the ragged man went away completely disillusioned. It
• 1:18
Speaker 1: must be a nice place, thought Svidrigailoff. How was it,
• 1:22
  Speaker 1: I didn't know it, I expect I look as if
• 1:25
Speaker 1: I came from a cafe chantant and have had some
• 1:27
Speaker 1: adventure on the way. It would be interesting to know
• 1:31
Speaker 1: who stayed here. He lighted the candle and looked at
• 1:34
Speaker 1: the room more carefully. It was a room so low
• 1:37
Speaker 1: pitched that Svidrigailov could only just stand up in it.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: It had one window, the bed, which was very dirty,
• 1:45
Speaker 1: and the plain stained chair and table almost filled it up.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: The walls looked as though they were made of planks
• 1:51
Speaker 1: covered with shabby paper, so torn and dusty that the
• 1:55
Speaker 1: pattern was indistinguishable, though the general color yellow could still
• 1:59
Speaker 1: be made out. One of the walls was cut short
• 2:03
Speaker 1: by the sloping ceiling, though the room was not an attic,
• 2:06
Speaker 1: but just under the stairs. Svidrigailov set down the candle,
• 2:11
Speaker 1: sat down on the bed, and sank into thought. But
• 2:15
Speaker 1: a strange, persistent murmur, which sometimes rose to a shout
• 2:18
Speaker 1: in the next room, attracted his attention. The murmur had
• 2:22
Speaker 1: not ceased from the moment he entered the room. He
• 2:25
Speaker 1: listened someone was upraiding and almost tearfully scolding, but he
• 2:29
Speaker 1: heard only one voice. Svidrigailov got up, shaded the light
• 2:34
Speaker 1: with his hand, and at once he saw light through
• 2:36
Speaker 1: a crack in the wall. He went up and peeped
• 2:39
Speaker 1: through the room, which was somewhat larger than his had
• 2:43
Speaker 1: two occupants. One of them, a very curly headed man
• 2:47
Speaker 1: with a red inflamed face, was standing in the pose
• 2:50
Speaker 1: of an orator, without his coat, with his legs wide
• 2:53
Speaker 1: apart to preserve his balance, and smiting himself on the breast.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: He reproached the other with being a beggar, with having
• 3:01
Speaker 1: no standing whatever. He declared that he had taken the
• 3:05
Speaker 1: other out of the gutter, and he could turn him
• 3:07
Speaker 1: out when he liked, and that only the finger of
• 3:10
Speaker 1: Providence sees it all. The object of his reproaches was
• 3:14
Speaker 1: sitting in a chair and had the air of a
• 3:17
Speaker 1: man who once dreadfully to sneeze, but can't. He sometimes
• 3:21
Speaker 1: turned sheepish and befogged eyes on the speaker, but obviously
• 3:25
Speaker 1: had not the slightest idea what he was talking about,
• 3:28
Speaker 1: and scarcely heard it. A candle was burning down on
• 3:31
Speaker 1: the table. There were wineglasses, a nearly empty bottle of vodka,
• 3:35
Speaker 1: bread and cucumber, and glasses with the dregs of stale tea.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: After gazing attentively at this, Svidrigailov turned away indifferently and
• 3:45
Speaker 1: sat down on the bed. The ragged attendant, returning with
• 3:49
Speaker 1: the tea, could not resist asking him again whether he
• 3:52
Speaker 1: didn't want anything more, and again receiving a negative reply.
• 3:56
Speaker 1: Finally withdrew Svidrigailov made haste to drink a glass of
• 4:00
Speaker 1: tea to warm himself, but could not eat anything. He
• 4:04
Speaker 1: began to feel feverish. He took off his coat, and,
• 4:08
Speaker 1: wrapping himself in the blanket, lay down on the bed.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: He was annoyed. It would have been better to be
• 4:15
Speaker 1: well for the occasion, he thought, with a smile. The
• 4:19
Speaker 1: room was close, the candle burnt dimly, the wind was
• 4:23
Speaker 1: roaring outside. He heard a mouse scratching in the corner,
• 4:26
Speaker 1: and the room smelt of mice and of leather. He
• 4:30
Speaker 1: lay in a sort of reverie. One thought followed another.
• 4:34
Speaker 1: He felt a longing to fix his imagination on something.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: It must be a garden under the window, he thought,
• 4:41
Speaker 1: there's a sound of trees. How I disliked the sound
• 4:45
Speaker 1: of trees on a stormy night in the dark. They
• 4:48
Speaker 1: give one a horrid feeling. He remembered how he had
• 4:52
Speaker 1: disliked it when he passed Petrovsky Park. Just now. This
• 4:56
Speaker 1: reminded him of the bridge over the Little Neva, and
• 4:59
Speaker 1: he felt cold again as he had when standing there.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: I never have liked water, he thought, even in a landscape,
• 5:08
Speaker 1: and he suddenly smiled again at a strange idea. Surely,
• 5:13
Speaker 1: now all these questions of taste and comfort ought not
• 5:16
Speaker 1: to matter. But I've become more particular, like an animal
• 5:20
Speaker 1: that picks out a special place for such an occasion.
• 5:24
Speaker 1: I ought to have gone into the Petrovsky Park. I
• 5:27
Speaker 1: suppose it seemed dark, cold, ha ha, as though I
• 5:31
Speaker 1: were seeking pleasant sensations. By the way, Why heaven, I
• 5:36
Speaker 1: put out the candle. He blew it out. They've gone
• 5:40
Speaker 1: to bed next door, he thought, not seeing the light
• 5:43
Speaker 1: at the crack. Well. Now, Marfa Petrovna, now is the
• 5:47
Speaker 1: time for you to turn up. It's dark and the
• 5:50
Speaker 1: very time and place for you. But now you won't come.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: He suddenly recalled how an hour before carrying out his
• 5:58
Speaker 1: design on Dounia, he had recommended Ruskolnikov to trust her
• 6:02
Speaker 1: to Razumian's keeping. I suppose I really did say it,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: as Russkolnikov guessed to tease myself. But what a rogue
• 6:11
Speaker 1: that Russkolnikov is. He's gone through a good deal. He
• 6:16
Speaker 1: may be a successful rogue in time, when he's got
• 6:19
Speaker 1: over his nonsense. But now he's too eager for life.
• 6:23
Speaker 1: These young men are contemptible on that point. But hang
• 6:27
Speaker 1: the fellow, Let him please himself. It's nothing to do
• 6:30
Speaker 1: with me. He could not get to sleep by degrees.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Dounia's image rose before him, and a shudder ran over him. No,
• 6:41
Speaker 1: I must give up all that, now, he thought, rousing himself.
• 6:45
Speaker 1: I must think of something else. It's queer and funny.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: I never had a great hatred for anyone. I never
• 6:52
Speaker 1: particularly desire to avenge myself even And that's a bad sign,
• 6:57
Speaker 1: A bad sign, a bad sign. I never liked quarreling either,
• 7:03
Speaker 1: and never lost my temper. That's a bad sign too.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: And the promises I made her just now too damnation.
• 7:12
Speaker 1: But who knows, perhaps she would have made a new
• 7:15
Speaker 1: man of me. Somehow, He ground his teeth and sank
• 7:20
Speaker 1: into silence again again, Dounia's image rose before him, just
• 7:25
Speaker 1: as she was when after shooting the first time, she
• 7:28
Speaker 1: had lowered the revolver in terror and gazed blankly at him,
• 7:32
Speaker 1: so that he might have seized her twice over, and
• 7:34
Speaker 1: she would not have lifted a hand to defend herself
• 7:36
Speaker 1: if he had not reminded her. He recalled how at
• 7:40
Speaker 1: that instant he felt almost sorry for her, how he
• 7:44
Speaker 1: had felt a pang at his heart. Aye, damnation, these
• 7:49
Speaker 1: thoughts again, I must put it away. He was dozing
• 7:55
Speaker 1: off the fevers shiver had ceased, when suddenly something seemed
• 7:59
Speaker 1: to run over his arm and leg under the bedclothes.
• 8:02
Speaker 1: He started, uugh, hang it, I believe it's a mouse.
• 8:07
Speaker 1: He thought, that's the veal I left on the table.
• 8:11
Speaker 1: He felt fearfully disinclined to pull off the blanket, get up,
• 8:14
Speaker 1: get cold, But all at once something unpleasant ran over
• 8:18
Speaker 1: his leg again. He pulled off the blanket and lighted
• 8:21
Speaker 1: the candle. Shaking with feverish chill, he bent down to
• 8:24
Speaker 1: examine the bed. There was nothing. He shook the blanket,
• 8:29
Speaker 1: and suddenly a mouse jumped out on the sheet. He
• 8:32
Speaker 1: tried to catch it, but the mouse ran to and
• 8:34
Speaker 1: fro in zigzags without leaving the bed, slipped between his fingers,
• 8:38
Speaker 1: ran over his hand, and suddenly darted under the pillow.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: He threw down the pillow, but in one instant felt
• 8:44
Speaker 1: something leap on his chest and dart over his body
• 8:47
Speaker 1: and down his back under his shirt. He trembled nervously
• 8:51
Speaker 1: and woke up. The room was dark. He was lying
• 8:55
Speaker 1: on the bed and wrapped up in the blanket as before.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: The wind was howling under the window. How disgusting, he thought,
• 9:03
Speaker 1: with annoyance. He got up and sat on the edge
• 9:06
Speaker 1: of the bedstead with his back to the window. It's
• 9:10
Speaker 1: better not to sleep at all, he decided. There was
• 9:14
Speaker 1: a cold, damp draft from the window. However, without getting up,
• 9:18
Speaker 1: he drew the blanket over him and wrapped himself in it.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: He was not thinking of anything and did not want
• 9:23
Speaker 1: to think. But one image rose after another incoherent scraps
• 9:28
Speaker 1: of thought without beginning or end, passed through his mind.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: He sank into drowsiness. Perhaps the cold or the dampness,
• 9:37
Speaker 1: or the dark, or the wind that held under the
• 9:40
Speaker 1: window and tossed the trees roused a sort of persistent
• 9:43
Speaker 1: craving for the fantastic he kept dwelling on images of flowers.
• 9:48
Speaker 1: He fancied a charming flower garden, a bright, warm, almost
• 9:53
Speaker 1: hot day, a holiday trinity day, a fine, sumptuous country
• 9:59
Speaker 1: cottage in the England. Fish taste, overgrown with fragrant flowers,
• 10:02
Speaker 1: with flower beds going round the house. The porch, wreathed
• 10:06
Speaker 1: in climbers, was surrounded with beds of roses. A light,
• 10:10
Speaker 1: cool staircase carpeted with rich rugs, was decorated with rare
• 10:14
Speaker 1: plants in china pots. He noticed, particularly in the windows,
• 10:18
Speaker 1: nosegays of tender, white, heavily fragrant narcissus bending over their
• 10:23
Speaker 1: bright green, thick long stalks. He was reluctant to move
• 10:27
Speaker 1: away from them, but he went up the stairs and
• 10:30
Speaker 1: came into a large, high drawing room, and again everywhere
• 10:34
Speaker 1: at the windows, the doors, on the balcony, and on
• 10:36
Speaker 1: the balcony itself were flowers. The floors were strewn with
• 10:41
Speaker 1: freshly cut fragrant hay. The windows were open, A fresh, cool,
• 10:46
Speaker 1: light air came into the room. The birds were chirruping
• 10:50
Speaker 1: under the window, and in the middle of the room,
• 10:52
Speaker 1: on a table covered with a white satin shroud, stood
• 10:55
Speaker 1: a coffin. The coffin was covered with white silk and
• 10:58
Speaker 1: edged with a thick white frill. Wreaths of flowers surrounded
• 11:03
Speaker 1: it on all sides. Among the flowers lay a girl
• 11:07
Speaker 1: in a white muslin dress, with her arms crossed and
• 11:10
Speaker 1: pressed on her bosom as though carved out of marble,
• 11:14
Speaker 1: but her loose fair hair was wet. There was a
• 11:17
Speaker 1: wreath of roses on her head. The stern and already
• 11:21
Speaker 1: rigid profile of her face looked as though chiseled of marble, too,
• 11:25
Speaker 1: and the smile on her pale lips was full of
• 11:28
Speaker 1: an immense unchildish misery and sorrowful appeal. Vidrigailov knew that girl.
• 11:35
Speaker 1: There was no holy image, no burning candle beside the coffin,
• 11:39
Speaker 1: no sound of prayers. The girl had drowned herself. She
• 11:44
Speaker 1: was only fourteen, but her heart was broken, and she
• 11:48
Speaker 1: had destroyed herself, crushed by an insult that had appalled
• 11:53
Speaker 1: and amazed that childish soul, had smirched that angel purity
• 11:57
Speaker 1: with unmerited disgrace, and torn from her a last scream
• 12:01
Speaker 1: of despair, unheeded and brutally disregarded. On a dark night,
• 12:06
Speaker 1: in the cold and wet while the wind howled. Svidrigailov
• 12:11
Speaker 1: came to himself, got up from the bed and went
• 12:14
Speaker 1: to the window. He felt for the latch and opened it.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: The wind lashed furiously into the little room and stung
• 12:20
Speaker 1: his face and chest, only covered with his shirt, as
• 12:23
Speaker 1: though with frost under the window. There must have been
• 12:27
Speaker 1: something like a garden, and apparently a pleasure garden there too.
• 12:32
Speaker 1: Probably there were tea tables and singing in the daytime.
• 12:36
Speaker 1: Now drops of rain flew in at the window from
• 12:39
Speaker 1: the trees and bushes. It was dark as in a cellar,
• 12:42
Speaker 1: so that he could only just make out the dark
• 12:44
Speaker 1: blurs of objects. Svidrigailov, bending down with elbows on the
• 12:49
Speaker 1: window sill, gazed for five minutes into the darkness. The
• 12:53
Speaker 1: boom of a cannon, followed by a second one, resounded
• 12:57
Speaker 1: in the darkness of the night. Ah, the signal the
• 13:01
Speaker 1: river is overflowing, he thought. By morning it will be
• 13:05
Speaker 1: swirling down the street in the lower parts, flooding the
• 13:08
Speaker 1: basements and cellars. The cellar rats will swim out, and
• 13:12
Speaker 1: men will curse in the rain and wind as they
• 13:14
Speaker 1: drag their rubbish to the upper stories. What time is
• 13:17
Speaker 1: it now? And he had hardly thought it, when somewhere
• 13:22
Speaker 1: near a clock on the wall, taking away hurriedly, struck three, Aha,
• 13:28
Speaker 1: it will be light in an hour. Why wait, I'll
• 13:32
Speaker 1: go out at once, straight to the park. I'll choose
• 13:34
Speaker 1: a great bush there, drenched with rain, so that as
• 13:37
Speaker 1: soon as one's shoulder touches it, millions of drops drip
• 13:40
Speaker 1: on one's head. He moved away from the window, shut
• 13:45
Speaker 1: it lighted the candle, put on his waistcoat, his overcoat,
• 13:48
Speaker 1: and his hat, and went out, carrying the candle into
• 13:52
Speaker 1: the passage to look for the ragged attendant, who would
• 13:54
Speaker 1: be asleep somewhere in the midst of candle ends and
• 13:57
Speaker 1: all sorts of rubbish. To pay for the room and
• 14:00
Speaker 1: leave the hotel. It's the best minute. I couldn't choose
• 14:04
Speaker 1: a better. He walked for some time through a long,
• 14:08
Speaker 1: narrow corridor without finding anyone, and was just going to
• 14:11
Speaker 1: call out, when suddenly, in a dark corner between an
• 14:14
Speaker 1: old cupboard and the door, he caught sight of a
• 14:17
Speaker 1: strange object which seemed to be alive. He bent down
• 14:20
Speaker 1: with the candle and saw a little girl not more
• 14:23
Speaker 1: than five years old, shivering and crying with her clothes
• 14:27
Speaker 1: as wet as a soaking house flannel. She did not
• 14:31
Speaker 1: seem afraid of Svidrigailov, but looked at him with blank
• 14:34
Speaker 1: amazement out of her big black eyes. Now and then
• 14:38
Speaker 1: she sobbed, as children do when they have been crying
• 14:41
Speaker 1: a long time but are beginning to be comforted. The
• 14:45
Speaker 1: child's face was pale and tired. She was numb with cold.
• 14:50
Speaker 1: How can she have come here? She must have hidden
• 14:53
Speaker 1: here and not slept all night. He began questioning her.
• 14:57
Speaker 1: The child suddenly became animated, clattered away in her baby language,
• 15:02
Speaker 1: something about mammy, and that mammy would beat her, and
• 15:05
Speaker 1: about some cup she had broken. The child chattered on
• 15:09
Speaker 1: without stopping. He could only guess from what she said
• 15:12
Speaker 1: that she was a neglected child whose mother, probably a
• 15:16
Speaker 1: drunken cook in the service of the hotel, whipped and
• 15:19
Speaker 1: frightened her. That the child had broken a cup of
• 15:22
Speaker 1: her mother's, and was so frightened that she had run
• 15:24
Speaker 1: away the evening before, had hidden for a long while
• 15:27
Speaker 1: somewhere outside in the rain. At last had made her
• 15:30
Speaker 1: way in here, hidden behind the cupboard, and spent the
• 15:33
Speaker 1: night there, crying and trembling from the damp, the darkness
• 15:37
Speaker 1: and the fear that she would be badly beaten for it.
• 15:41
Speaker 1: He took her in his arms, went back to his room,
• 15:44
Speaker 1: sat her on the bed, and began undressing her. The
• 15:47
Speaker 1: torn shoes which she had on her stockingless feet were
• 15:50
Speaker 1: as wet as if she had been standing in a
• 15:52
Speaker 1: puddle all night. When he had undressed her, he put
• 15:56
Speaker 1: her on the bed, covered her up, and wrapped her
• 15:59
Speaker 1: in the blanket from her head downwards. She fell asleep
• 16:02
Speaker 1: at once. Then he sank into dreary musing again what
• 16:09
Speaker 1: folly to trouble myself? He decided, suddenly, with an oppressive
• 16:13
Speaker 1: feeling of annoyance, what idiocy in vexation? He took up
• 16:19
Speaker 1: the candle to go and look for the ragged attendant again,
• 16:21
Speaker 1: and make haste to go away. Damn the child, he thought,
• 16:25
Speaker 1: as he opened the door. But he turned again to
• 16:28
Speaker 1: see whether the child was asleep. He raised the blanket carefully.
• 16:32
Speaker 1: The child was sleeping soundly. She had got warm under
• 16:36
Speaker 1: the blanket, and her pale cheeks were flushed. But strange
• 16:40
Speaker 1: to say that flush seemed brighter and coarser than the
• 16:43
Speaker 1: rosy cheeks of childhood. Flush of fever, thought Svidrigailoff. It
• 16:49
Speaker 1: was like the flush from drinking, as though she had
• 16:52
Speaker 1: been given a full glass to drink. Her crimson lips
• 16:55
Speaker 1: were hot and glowing. But what was this? Suddenly fancied
• 17:00
Speaker 1: that her long black eyelashes were quivering, as though the
• 17:04
Speaker 1: lids were opening, and a sly, crafty eye peeped out
• 17:07
Speaker 1: with an unchildlike wink, as though the little girl were
• 17:11
Speaker 1: not asleep, but pretending, yes, it was so. Her lips
• 17:15
Speaker 1: parted in a smile. The corners of her mouth quivered
• 17:19
Speaker 1: as though she were trying to control them. But now
• 17:23
Speaker 1: she quite gave up all effort. Now it was a grin,
• 17:27
Speaker 1: a broad grin. There was something shameless, provocative in that
• 17:31
Speaker 1: quite unchildish face. It was depravity. It was the face
• 17:36
Speaker 1: of a harlot, the shameless face of a French harlot.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: Now both eyes opened wide, they turned a glowing, shameless
• 17:44
Speaker 1: glance upon him. They laughed, invited him. There was something
• 17:48
Speaker 1: infinitely hideous and shocking in that laugh, in those eyes,
• 17:52
Speaker 1: in such nastiness, in the face of a child. What
• 17:57
Speaker 1: at five years old, Svidrigailov muttered, in genuine horror, what
• 18:02
Speaker 1: does it mean? And now she turned to him, her
• 18:05
Speaker 1: little face all aglow, holding out her arms a cursed child,
• 18:11
Speaker 1: Svidrigailov cried, raising his hand to strike her. But at
• 18:15
Speaker 1: that moment he woke up. He was in the same bed,
• 18:20
Speaker 1: still wrapped in the blanket. The candle had not been lighted,
• 18:23
Speaker 1: and daylight was streaming in at the windows. I've had
• 18:27
Speaker 1: nightmare all night, he got up, angrily, feeling utterly shattered,
• 18:32
Speaker 1: his bones ached. There was a thick mist outside, and
• 18:36
Speaker 1: he could see nothing. It was nearly five. He had
• 18:39
Speaker 1: overslept himself. He got up, put on his still damp
• 18:43
Speaker 1: jacket and overcoat. Feeling the revolver in his pocket, he
• 18:47
Speaker 1: took it out, and then he sat down, took a
• 18:50
Speaker 1: notebook out of his pocket, and in the most conspicuous place,
• 18:53
Speaker 1: on the title page, wrote a few lines in large letters.
• 18:57
Speaker 1: Reading them over, he sank into thought with his elbows
• 19:00
Speaker 1: on the table. The revolver and the notebook lay beside him.
• 19:05
Speaker 1: Some flies woke up and settled on the untouched veal,
• 19:08
Speaker 1: which was still on the table. He stared at them,
• 19:11
Speaker 1: and at last, with his free right hand, began trying
• 19:14
Speaker 1: to catch one. He tried till he was tired, but
• 19:18
Speaker 1: could not catch it. At last, realizing that he was
• 19:21
Speaker 1: engaged in this interesting pursuit. He started, got up and
• 19:25
Speaker 1: walked resolutely out of the room. A minute later he
• 19:29
Speaker 1: was in the street. A thick, milky mist hung over
• 19:33
Speaker 1: the town Svidrigailov walked along the slippery, dirty wooden pavement
• 19:37
Speaker 1: towards the Little Neva. He was picturing the waters of
• 19:41
Speaker 1: the Little Neva, swollen in the night, Petrovsky Island, the
• 19:45
Speaker 1: wet pass, the wet grass, the wet trees and bushes,
• 19:49
Speaker 1: and at last the bush. He began ill humoredly staring
• 19:53
Speaker 1: at the houses, trying to think of something else. There
• 19:57
Speaker 1: was not a cabman or a passer by in the street.
• 20:01
Speaker 1: The bright yellow, wooden little houses looked dirty and ejected
• 20:04
Speaker 1: with their closed shutters. The cold and damp penetrated his
• 20:09
Speaker 1: whole body, and he began to shiver. From time to time,
• 20:13
Speaker 1: he came across shop signs and read each carefully. At
• 20:17
Speaker 1: last he reached the end of the wooden pavement and
• 20:19
Speaker 1: came to a big stone house. A dirty, shivering dog
• 20:24
Speaker 1: crossed his path with its tail between its legs. A
• 20:28
Speaker 1: man in a greatcoat lay face downwards, dead drunk across
• 20:32
Speaker 1: the pavement. He looked at him and went on a
• 20:36
Speaker 1: high tower stood up on the left bah. He shouted,
• 20:40
Speaker 1: here is a place, Why should it be, Petrovsky, It
• 20:44
Speaker 1: will be in the presence of an official witness anyway.
• 20:48
Speaker 1: He almost smiled at this new thought, and turned into
• 20:52
Speaker 1: the street, where there was the big house with the tower.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: At the great closed gates of the house, a little
• 20:58
Speaker 1: man stood with his shoulder leaning against them, Wrapped in
• 21:01
Speaker 1: a gray soldier's coat with a copper Achilles helmet on
• 21:04
Speaker 1: his head. He cast a drowsy and indifferent glance at Svidrigailov.
• 21:10
Speaker 1: His face wore that perpetual look of peevish dejection which
• 21:14
Speaker 1: is so sourly printed on all the faces of Jewish
• 21:16
Speaker 1: race without exception. They both Svidrigailov and Achilles stared at
• 21:22
Speaker 1: each other for a few minutes without speaking. At last,
• 21:26
Speaker 1: it struck Achilles as irregular for a man not drunk
• 21:29
Speaker 1: to be standing three steps from him, staring and not
• 21:32
Speaker 1: saying a word. What do you want here, he said,
• 21:36
Speaker 1: without moving or changing his position. Nothing. Brother, good morning,
• 21:42
Speaker 1: answered Svidrigailov. This isn't the place I am going to
• 21:47
Speaker 1: foreign parts, brother, to foreign parts, to America, America, Svidrigailov
• 21:55
Speaker 1: took out the revolver and cocked it. Achilles raised his eyebrows.
• 22:01
Speaker 1: I say, this is not the place for such jokes.
• 22:04
Speaker 1: Why shouldn't it be the place because it isn't? Well, brother,
• 22:10
  Speaker 1: I don't mind that it's a good place. When you
• 22:14
Speaker 1: are asked, you just say he was going, he said
• 22:16
Speaker 1: to America. He put the revolver to his right temple.
• 22:21
Speaker 1: You can't do it here. It's not the place, cried Achilles,
• 22:25
Speaker 1: rousing himself, his eyes growing bigger and bigger. Svidrigailov pulled
• 22:30
Speaker 1: the trigger. End of Part six, Chapter six, Part six,
• 22:36
Speaker 1: chapter seven. The same day, about seven o'clock in the evening,
• 22:42
Speaker 1: russ Kolnikov was on his way to his mother's and
• 22:44
Speaker 1: sister's lodging, the lodging at Bekoliyev's house, which Razumiyan had
• 22:48
Speaker 1: found for them. The stairs went up from the street.
• 22:52
Speaker 1: Ruskolnikov walked with lagging steps, as though still hesitating whether
• 22:56
Speaker 1: to go or not. But nothing would have turned him back.
• 22:59
Speaker 1: His decision was taken. Besides, it doesn't matter. They still
• 23:04
Speaker 1: know nothing, he thought, and they are used to thinking
• 23:07
Speaker 1: of me as eccentric. He was appallingly dressed, his clothes
• 23:13
Speaker 1: torn and dirty, soaked with the night's rain. His face
• 23:17
Speaker 1: was almost distorted from fatigue, exposure, the inward conflict that
• 23:21
Speaker 1: had lasted for twenty four hours. He had spent all
• 23:25
Speaker 1: the previous night alone god knows where, but anyway, he
• 23:30
Speaker 1: had reached a decision. He knocked at the door, which
• 23:33
Speaker 1: was opened by his mother. Dounia was not at home.
• 23:37
Speaker 1: Even the servant happened to be out. At first, Pulcheria
• 23:41
Speaker 1: Alexandrovna was speechless with joy and surprise. Then she took
• 23:45
Speaker 1: him by the hand and drew him into the room.
• 23:48
Speaker 1: Here you are, she began, faltering with joy. Don't be
• 23:53
Speaker 1: angry with me, Rodya for welcoming you so foolishly with tears.
• 23:57
Speaker 1: I am laughing, not crying. Did you think I was crying? No,
• 24:02
Speaker 1: I am delighted. But I've got into such a stupid
• 24:05
Speaker 1: habit of shedding tears. I've been like that ever since
• 24:08
Speaker 1: your father's death. I cry for anything. Sit down, dear boy,
• 24:13
Speaker 1: you must be tired. I see you are, Oh how
• 24:16
Speaker 1: muddy you are. I was in the rain yesterday. Mother
• 24:21
Speaker 1: Russkolnikov began, no, no, Pulcheria Alexandrovna hurriedly interrupted. You thought
• 24:28
Speaker 1: I was going to cross question you in the womanish
• 24:31
  Speaker 1: way I used to. Don't be anxious. I understand, I
• 24:35
Speaker 1: understand it all now I've learned the ways here, and
• 24:38
Speaker 1: truly I see for myself that they are better. I've
• 24:42
Speaker 1: made up my mind once for all. How could I
• 24:45
Speaker 1: understand your plans and expect you to give an account
• 24:47
Speaker 1: of them. God knows what concerns and plans you may have,
• 24:51
Speaker 1: or what ideas you are hatching. So it's not for
• 24:54
Speaker 1: me to keep nudging your elbow asking you what you
• 24:57
Speaker 1: are thinking about. But my goodness, why am I running
• 25:01
Speaker 1: to and fro as though I were crazy? I am
• 25:04
Speaker 1: reading your article in the magazine for the third time.
• 25:06
Speaker 1: Rodya Dmitri Prokofitch brought it to me directly. I saw it,
• 25:11
Speaker 1: I cried out to myself, there, foolish one, I thought,
• 25:15
Speaker 1: that's what he is busy about. That's the solution of
• 25:18
Speaker 1: the mystery learned. People are always like that. He may
• 25:22
Speaker 1: have some new ideas in his head just now he
• 25:25
Speaker 1: is thinking them over, and I worry him and upset him.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: I read it, my dear, and of course there was
• 25:31
Speaker 1: a great deal I did not understand, but that's only natural.
• 25:35
Speaker 1: How should I show me? Mother? Russkolnikov took the magazine
• 25:41
Speaker 1: and glanced at his article. Incongruous as it was with
• 25:45
Speaker 1: his mood and his circumstances, he felt that strange and
• 25:48
Speaker 1: bittersweet sensation that every author experiences the first time he
• 25:52
Speaker 1: sees himself in print. Besides, he was only twenty three.
• 25:57
Speaker 1: It lasted only a moment. After reading a few lines,
• 26:00
Speaker 1: he frowned and his heart throbbed with anguish. He recalled
• 26:04
Speaker 1: all the inward conflict of the preceding months. He flung
• 26:08
Speaker 1: the article on the table with disgust and anger. But
• 26:13
Speaker 1: however foolish I may be, Rodya, I can see for
• 26:16
Speaker 1: myself that you will very soon be one of the leading,
• 26:19
Speaker 1: if not the leading man in the world of Russian thought.
• 26:22
Speaker 1: And they dared to think you were mad. You don't know,
• 26:26
Speaker 1: but they really thought that, Ah, the despicable creatures. How
• 26:30
Speaker 1: could they understand genius? And Dounia Dounia was all but
• 26:35
Speaker 1: believing it. What do you say to that your father
• 26:39
Speaker 1: sent twice to magazines, the first time poems. I've got
• 26:42
Speaker 1: the manuscript and will show you, and the second time
• 26:45
Speaker 1: a whole novel. I begged him to let me copy
• 26:48
Speaker 1: it out, and how we prayed that they should be
• 26:50
Speaker 1: taken they weren't. I was breaking my heart, Rodya, six
• 26:55
Speaker 1: or seven days ago, over your food and your clothes
• 26:58
Speaker 1: and the way you were living. But now I see
• 27:01
Speaker 1: again how foolish I was, for you can attain any
• 27:05
Speaker 1: position you like by your intellect and talent, no doubt.
• 27:08
Speaker 1: You don't care about that for the present, and you
• 27:11
Speaker 1: are occupied with much more important matters. Donia's not at
• 27:15
Speaker 1: home mother, no, Rodya. I often don't see her. She
• 27:19
Speaker 1: leaves me alone. Dmitri Prokovitch comes to see me. It's
• 27:23
Speaker 1: so good of him, and he always talks about you.
• 27:26
Speaker 1: He loves you and respects you, my dear. I don't
• 27:30
Speaker 1: say that Dounia is very wanting in consideration, I am
• 27:33
Speaker 1: not complaining. She has her ways and I have mine.
• 27:37
Speaker 1: She seems to have got some secrets of late, and
• 27:40
Speaker 1: I never have any secrets from you too. Of course,
• 27:43
Speaker 1: I am sure that Dounia has far too much sense,
• 27:46
Speaker 1: and besides, she loves you and me, But I don't
• 27:50
Speaker 1: know what it will all lead to. You've made me
• 27:53
Speaker 1: so happy by coming now, Rodya, but she has missed
• 27:56
Speaker 1: you by going out. When she comes in, i'll tell
• 27:59
Speaker 1: her your brother came in while you were out. Where
• 28:02
Speaker 1: have you been all this time? You mustn't spoil me,
• 28:06
Speaker 1: Rodya you know, come when you can, But if you can't,
• 28:10
Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. I can wait. I shall know anyway
• 28:14
Speaker 1: that you are fond of me. That will be enough
• 28:16
Speaker 1: for me. I shall read what you write, I shall
• 28:19
Speaker 1: hear about you from every one, and sometimes you'll come
• 28:22
Speaker 1: yourself to see me. What could be better? Here? You've
• 28:26
Speaker 1: come now to comfort your mother. I see that here,
• 28:30
Speaker 1: Pulcheria Alexandrovna began to cry. Here I am again. Don't
• 28:36
Speaker 1: mind my foolishness, My goodness, why am I sitting here?
• 28:40
Speaker 1: She cried, jumping up. There is coffee, and I don't
• 28:43
Speaker 1: offer you any ah. That's the selfishness of old age.
• 28:46
Speaker 1: I'll get it at once. Mother, don't trouble I am
• 28:50
Speaker 1: going at once. I haven't come for that. Please listen
• 28:54
Speaker 1: to me. Pulcheria Alexandrovna went up to him timidly. Mother,
• 29:00
Speaker 1: whatever happens, whatever you hear about me, whatever you are
• 29:04
Speaker 1: told about me, you will always love me as you
• 29:06
Speaker 1: do now, he asked suddenly from the fullness of his heart,
• 29:10
Speaker 1: as though not thinking of his words and not weighing them. Rodya, Rodya,
• 29:16
Speaker 1: what is the matter? How can you ask me such
• 29:18
Speaker 1: a question? Why? Who will tell me anything about you? Besides,
• 29:23
  Speaker 1: I shouldn't believe anyone I should refuse to listen. I
• 29:28
Speaker 1: have come to assure you that I've always loved you,
• 29:31
Speaker 1: and am glad that we are alone, even glad Dounia
• 29:34
Speaker 1: is out. He went on with the same impulse. I
• 29:38
Speaker 1: have come to tell you that though you will be unhappy,
• 29:41
Speaker 1: you must believe that your son loves you now more
• 29:43
Speaker 1: than himself, and that all you thought about me, that
• 29:46
Speaker 1: I was cruel and didn't care about you, was all
• 29:49
Speaker 1: a mistake. I shall never cease to love you. Well,
• 29:53
Speaker 1: that's enough, I thought, I must do this and begin
• 29:56
Speaker 1: with this. Pulcheria Alexandrovna embraced him in silence, pressing him
• 30:02
Speaker 1: to her bosom and weeping gently. I don't know what
• 30:06
Speaker 1: is wrong with you, Rodya, she said at last. I've
• 30:10
Speaker 1: been thinking all this time that we were simply boring you,
• 30:13
Speaker 1: and now I see that there is a great sorrow
• 30:16
Speaker 1: in store for you, and that's why you are miserable.
• 30:20
Speaker 1: I've foreseen it a long time, Rodya, forgive me for
• 30:23
Speaker 1: speaking about it. I keep thinking about it and lie
• 30:26
Speaker 1: awake at nights. Your sister lay talking in her sleep
• 30:30
Speaker 1: all last night, talking of nothing but you. I caught something,
• 30:35
Speaker 1: but I couldn't make it out. I felt all the
• 30:38
Speaker 1: morning as though I were going to be hanged, waiting
• 30:41
Speaker 1: for something, expecting something, And now it has come, Rodya, Rodya,
• 30:47
Speaker 1: where are you going? You are going away somewhere. Yes,
• 30:52
Speaker 1: that's what I thought. I can come with you, you know,
• 30:55
Speaker 1: if you need me, and Don'tia too. She loves you.
• 30:59
Speaker 1: She loves you, dear, and Sofya Semyonovna may come with
• 31:02
Speaker 1: us if you like you see, I am glad to
• 31:05
Speaker 1: look upon her as a daughter. Even dmty Prokofitch will
• 31:08
Speaker 1: help us to go together. But where are you going? Goodbye? Mother?
• 31:15
Speaker 1: What today? She cried, as though losing him forever. I
• 31:20
  Speaker 1: can't stay. I must go now, and can't I come
• 31:24
Speaker 1: with you? No? But kneel down and pray to God
• 31:28
Speaker 1: for me. Your prayer perhaps will reach him. Let me
• 31:33
Speaker 1: bless you and sign you with the cross. That's right,
• 31:36
Speaker 1: that's right, Oh God? What are we doing? Yes? He
• 31:41
Speaker 1: was glad. He was very glad that there was no
• 31:43
Speaker 1: one there, that he was alone with his mother for
• 31:47
Speaker 1: the first time after all those awful months. His heart
• 31:50
Speaker 1: was softened. He fell down before her, he kissed her feet,
• 31:54
Speaker 1: and both wept, embracing, and she was not surprised and
• 31:58
Speaker 1: did not question him this time. For some days she
• 32:01
Speaker 1: had realized that something awful was happening to her son,
• 32:05
Speaker 1: and that now some terrible minute had come for him. Rodya,
• 32:10
Speaker 1: my darling, my first born, she said, sobbing. Now you
• 32:14
Speaker 1: are just as when you were little. You would run
• 32:17
Speaker 1: like this to me and hug me and kiss me.
• 32:20
Speaker 1: When your father was living and we were poor, you
• 32:24
Speaker 1: comforted us simply by being with us. And when I
• 32:26
Speaker 1: buried your father, how often we wept together at his
• 32:30
Speaker 1: grave and embraced as now. And if I've been crying lately,
• 32:34
Speaker 1: it's that my mother's heart had a foreboding of trouble
• 32:38
Speaker 1: the first time I saw you that evening. You remember,
• 32:41
Speaker 1: as soon as we arrived here, I guessed, simply from
• 32:44
Speaker 1: your eyes my heart sank at once. And today, when
• 32:48
Speaker 1: I opened the door and looked at you, I thought
• 32:51
Speaker 1: the fatal hour had come. Rodya, Rodya, you are not
• 32:55
Speaker 1: going away today. No, you'll come again. Yes, I'll come, Rodya,
• 33:03
  Speaker 1: don't be angry. I don't dare to question you. I
• 33:07
Speaker 1: know I mustn't only say two words to me? Is
• 33:11
Speaker 1: it far? Where you are going? Very far? What is
• 33:16
Speaker 1: awaiting you? There? Some post or career for you? What
• 33:20
Speaker 1: God sends? Only pray for me. Raskolnikov went to the door,
• 33:26
Speaker 1: but she clutched him and gazed despairingly into his eyes.
• 33:29
Speaker 1: Her face worked with terror. Enough, mother, said Raskolnikov, deeply,
• 33:35
Speaker 1: regretting that he had come. Not forever? Is it not forever?
• 33:40
  Speaker 1: You'll come, You'll come tomorrow, I will, I will. Goodbye.
• 33:46
Speaker 1: He tore himself away. At last, it was warm, fresh,
• 33:51
Speaker 1: bright evening. It had cleared up. In the morning. Raskolnikov
• 33:56
Speaker 1: went to his lodgings. He made haste. He wanted to
• 33:59
Speaker 1: think all before sunset. He did not want to meet
• 34:03
Speaker 1: anyone till then. Going up the stairs, he noticed that
• 34:06
Speaker 1: Nastasha rushed from the samovar to watch him intently. Can
• 34:11
Speaker 1: anyone have come to see me, he wondered. He had
• 34:15
Speaker 1: a disgusted vision of Porfiry, But opening his door, he
• 34:19
Speaker 1: saw Dounia she was sitting alone, plunged in deep thought,
• 34:24
Speaker 1: and looked as though she had been waiting a long time.
• 34:27
Speaker 1: He stopped short in the doorway. She rose from the
• 34:30
Speaker 1: sofa in dismay and stood up facing him, Her eyes
• 34:34
Speaker 1: fixed upon him, betrayed horror and infinite grief. And from
• 34:39
Speaker 1: those eyes alone he saw at once that she knew.
• 34:44
Speaker 1: Am I come in or go away? He asked uncertainly.
• 34:50
Speaker 1: I've been all day with Sofya Semyonovna. We were both
• 34:53
Speaker 1: waiting for you. We thought that you would be sure
• 34:56
Speaker 1: to come there. Raskolnikov went into the room sank exhausted
• 35:01
Speaker 1: on a chair. I feel weak, Donia. I am very tired,
• 35:06
Speaker 1: and I should have liked at this moment to be
• 35:08
Speaker 1: able to control myself. He glanced at her mistrustfully. Where
• 35:14
Speaker 1: were you all night? I don't remember clearly, you see, sister,
• 35:20
Speaker 1: I wanted to make up my mind once for all,
• 35:22
Speaker 1: and several times I walked by the neva. I remember
• 35:26
Speaker 1: that I wanted to end it all there, but I
• 35:29
Speaker 1: couldn't make up my mind, he whispered, looking at her mistrustfully. Again,
• 35:35
Speaker 1: thank god, that was just what we were afraid of,
• 35:38
Speaker 1: Sofya Semyonovna, and I then you still have faith in life?
• 35:42
Speaker 1: Thank God, Thank God. Raskolnikov smiled bitterly. I haven't faith,
• 35:49
Speaker 1: but I have just been weeping in mother's arms. I
• 35:52
Speaker 1: haven't faith, but I have just asked her to pray
• 35:55
Speaker 1: for me. I don't know how it is, Donia. I
• 35:58
Speaker 1: don't understand it. Have you been at mother's Have you
• 36:03
Speaker 1: told her? Cried Dounia, horror stricken. Surely you haven't done that. No.
• 36:09
Speaker 1: I didn't tell her in words, but she understood a
• 36:13
Speaker 1: great deal. She heard you talking in your sleep. I
• 36:18
Speaker 1: am sure she half understands it already. Perhaps I did
• 36:22
Speaker 1: wrong in going to see her. I don't know why
• 36:25
  Speaker 1: I did go. I am a contemptible person, Dounia. A
• 36:30
Speaker 1: contemptible person, but ready to face suffering. You are, aren't you? Yes?
• 36:37
Speaker 1: I am going at once, Yes, to escape the disgrace.
• 36:42
Speaker 1: I thought of drowning myself, Dounia. But as I looked
• 36:45
Speaker 1: into the water, I thought that if I had considered
• 36:48
Speaker 1: myself strong till now, I'd better not be afraid of disgrace,
• 36:53
Speaker 1: he said, hurrying on. It's pride, Dounia, pride, Rodya. There
• 37:00
Speaker 1: was a gleam of fire in his lustreless eyes. He
• 37:03
Speaker 1: seemed to be glad to think that he was still proud.
• 37:07
Speaker 1: You don't think, sister, that I was simply afraid of
• 37:10
Speaker 1: the water, he asked, looking into her face with a
• 37:13
Speaker 1: sinister smile. Oh rodya, hush, cried Dounia. Bitterly. Silence lasted
• 37:20
Speaker 1: for two minutes. He sat with his eyes fixed on
• 37:23
Speaker 1: the floor. Dounia stood at the other end of the
• 37:26
Speaker 1: table and looked at him with anguish. Suddenly he got up.
• 37:30
Speaker 1: It's late, it's time to go. I am going at
• 37:34
Speaker 1: once to give myself up, but I don't know why
• 37:37
Speaker 1: I am going to give myself up. Big tears fell
• 37:41
Speaker 1: from her cheeks. You are crying, sister, But can you
• 37:45
Speaker 1: hold out your hand to me? You doubted it? She
• 37:49
Speaker 1: threw her arms round him. Aren't you half expiating your
• 37:53
Speaker 1: crime by facing the suffering? She cried, holding him close
• 37:57
Speaker 1: and kissing him. Crime. What crime? He cried, in sudden fury,
• 38:03
Speaker 1: That I killed a vile, noxious insect, an old pawnbroker,
• 38:07
Speaker 1: woman of use to no one. Killing her was an
• 38:11
Speaker 1: atonement for forty sins. She was sucking the life out
• 38:14
Speaker 1: of poor people. Was that a crime. I am not
• 38:18
Speaker 1: thinking of it, and I am not thinking of expiating it.
• 38:22
Speaker 1: And why are you all rubbing it in on all sides?
• 38:25
Speaker 1: A crime? A crime? Only now I see clear the
• 38:29
Speaker 1: imbecility of my cowardice, now that I have decided to
• 38:33
Speaker 1: face this superfluous disgrace. It's simply because I am contemptible
• 38:38
Speaker 1: and have nothing in me that I have decided to
• 38:41
Speaker 1: perhaps too for my advantage, As that poor firy suggested, brother, Brother,
• 38:48
Speaker 1: what are you saying? Why you have shed blood? Cried
• 38:53
Speaker 1: Dounia in despair which all men shed, He put in
• 38:57
Speaker 1: almost frantically, which flow and has always flowed in streams,
• 39:02
Speaker 1: which is spilt like champagne, and for which men are
• 39:06
Speaker 1: crowned in the capitol and are called afterwards benefactors of mankind.
• 39:12
Speaker 1: Look into it more carefully and understand it. I too,
• 39:16
Speaker 1: wanted to do good to men, and would have done
• 39:18
Speaker 1: hundreds thousands of good deeds to make up for that
• 39:21
Speaker 1: one piece of stupidity, not stupidity, even simply clumsiness, for
• 39:27
Speaker 1: the idea was by no means stupid, as it seems
• 39:30
Speaker 1: now that it has failed. Everything seems stupid when it fails.
• 39:35
Speaker 1: By that stupidity, I only wanted to put myself into
• 39:38
Speaker 1: an independent position, to take the first step to obtain means,
• 39:43
Speaker 1: and then everything would have been smoothed over by benefits
• 39:46
Speaker 1: immeasurable in comparison. But I I couldn't carry out even
• 39:52
Speaker 1: the first step because I am contemptible, That's what's the matter.
• 39:57
Speaker 1: And yet I won't look at it as you do.
• 40:01
Speaker 1: If I had succeeded, I should have been crowned with glory.
• 40:04
Speaker 1: But now I'm trapped. But that's not so, not so, brother,
• 40:11
Speaker 1: what are you saying, Ah, it's not picturesque, not esthetically attractive.
• 40:18
Speaker 1: I failed to understand why bombarding people by regular siege
• 40:22
Speaker 1: is more honorable. The fear of appearances is the first
• 40:26
Speaker 1: symptom of impotence. I've never never recognized this more clearly
• 40:31
Speaker 1: than now, and I am further than ever from seeing
• 40:34
Speaker 1: that what I did was a crime. I've never never
• 40:38
Speaker 1: been stronger and more convinced than now. The color had
• 40:42
Speaker 1: rushed into his pale, exhausted face. But as he uttered
• 40:46
Speaker 1: this last explanation, he happened to meet Dounia's eyes, and
• 40:49
Speaker 1: he saw such anguish in them that he could not
• 40:52
Speaker 1: help being checked. He felt that he had anyway made
• 40:56
Speaker 1: these two poor women miserable that he was anyway cause Dounia, darling.
• 41:03
Speaker 1: If I am guilty, forgive me, though I cannot be forgiven.
• 41:07
Speaker 1: If I am guilty, goodbye. We won't dispute. It's time, high,
• 41:12
Speaker 1: time to go. Don't follow me. I beseech you. I
• 41:16
Speaker 1: have somewhere else to go. But you go at once
• 41:19
Speaker 1: and sit with mother. I entreat you too. It's my
• 41:23
Speaker 1: last request of you. Don't leave her at all. I
• 41:27
Speaker 1: left her in a state of anxiety that she is
• 41:29
Speaker 1: not fit to bear. She will die or go out
• 41:32
Speaker 1: of her mind. Be with her. Razumian will be with you.
• 41:36
Speaker 1: I've been talking to him. Don't cry about me. I'll
• 41:41
Speaker 1: try to be honest and manly all my life. Even
• 41:44
Speaker 1: if I am a murderer. Perhaps I shall someday make
• 41:47
  Speaker 1: a name. I won't disgrace you. You will see I'll
• 41:51
Speaker 1: still show. Now goodbye for the present, he concluded, hurriedly,
• 41:56
Speaker 1: noticing again a strange expression in Dounia's eye at his
• 42:00
Speaker 1: last words and promises, why are you crying? Don't cry?
• 42:05
Speaker 1: Don't cry. We are not parting forever. Ah, yes, wait
• 42:10
Speaker 1: a minute, I'd forgotten. He went to the table took
• 42:13
Speaker 1: up a thick, dusty book, opened it, and took from
• 42:16
Speaker 1: between the pages a little watercolor portrait on Ivory. It
• 42:21
Speaker 1: was the portrait of his landlady's daughter who had died
• 42:24
Speaker 1: of fever, that strange girl who had wanted to be
• 42:27
Speaker 1: a nun. For a minute, he gazed at the delicate,
• 42:30
Speaker 1: expressive face of his betrothed, kissed the portrait, and gave
• 42:34
Speaker 1: it to Dounia. I used to talk a great deal
• 42:38
Speaker 1: about it to her. Only to her, he said, thoughtfully,
• 42:42
Speaker 1: to her heart, I confided much of what has since
• 42:45
Speaker 1: been so hideously realized. Don't be uneasy, he returned to Donia.
• 42:51
Speaker 1: She was as much opposed to it as you, and
• 42:54
Speaker 1: I am glad that she is gone. The great point
• 42:57
Speaker 1: is that everything now is going to be different, is
• 43:00
Speaker 1: going to be broken in two, he cried, suddenly returning
• 43:04
Speaker 1: to his dejection. Everything everything, and am I prepared for it?
• 43:09
Speaker 1: Do I want it myself? They say it is necessary
• 43:13
Speaker 1: for me to suffer? What's the object of these senseless sufferings?
• 43:17
Speaker 1: Shall I know any better what they are for? When
• 43:19
Speaker 1: I am crushed by hardships and idiocy and weak as
• 43:23
Speaker 1: an old man After twenty years, penal servitude, and what
• 43:27
Speaker 1: shall I have to live for? Then? Why am I
• 43:29
Speaker 1: consenting to that life? Now? Oh? I knew I was
• 43:33
Speaker 1: contemptible when I stood looking at the neva at daybreak. Today,
• 43:38
Speaker 1: at last, they both went out. It was hard for Dounia,
• 43:41
Speaker 1: but she loved him. She walked away, but after going
• 43:45
Speaker 1: fifty paces, she turned round to look at him again.
• 43:48
Speaker 1: He was still in sight at the corner. He too
• 43:51
Speaker 1: turned and for the last time, their eyes met, But
• 43:55
Speaker 1: noticing that she was looking at him, he motioned her
• 43:58
Speaker 1: away with impatience and even vexation, and turn the corner abruptly.
• 44:03
Speaker 1: I am wicked, I see that, he thought to himself,
• 44:07
Speaker 1: feeling ashamed a moment later of his angry gesture to Dounia.
• 44:11
Speaker 1: But why are they so fond of me? If I
• 44:14
Speaker 1: don't deserve it? Oh? If only I were alone and
• 44:18
Speaker 1: no one loved me, and I too, had never loved anyone,
• 44:21
Speaker 1: nothing of all this would have happened. But I wonder,
• 44:26
Speaker 1: shall I, in those fifteen or twenty years, grow so
• 44:29
Speaker 1: meek that I shall humble myself before people and whimper
• 44:32
Speaker 1: at every word that I am a criminal? Yes, that's it,
• 44:36
Speaker 1: that's it, That's what they are sending me there, for
• 44:39
Speaker 1: that's what they want. Look at them running to and
• 44:42
Speaker 1: fro about the streets, every one of them a scoundrel
• 44:46
Speaker 1: and a criminal at heart, and worse still an idiot.
• 44:50
Speaker 1: But try to get me off, and they be wild
• 44:52
Speaker 1: with righteous indignation. Oh how I hate them all, he felt, musing,
• 44:58
Speaker 1: by what process come to pass that he could be
• 45:01
Speaker 1: humbled before all of them, indiscriminately humbled by conviction? And
• 45:06
Speaker 1: yet why not? It must be so? Would not twenty
• 45:11
Speaker 1: years of continual bondage crush him utterly water wears out
• 45:15
Speaker 1: a stone? And why why should he live after that?
• 45:20
Speaker 1: Why should he go now? When he knew that it
• 45:22
Speaker 1: would be so? It was the hundredth time, perhaps that
• 45:26
Speaker 1: he had asked himself that question, since the previous evening.
• 45:30
Speaker 1: But still he went end of Part six, Chapter seven,
• 45:36
Speaker 1: Part six, chapter eight. When he went into Sonya's room,
• 45:41
Speaker 1: it was already getting dark. All days. Sonya had been
• 45:45
Speaker 1: waiting for him in terrible anxiety. Donia had been waiting
• 45:49
Speaker 1: with her. She had come to her that morning, remembering
• 45:52
Speaker 1: Svidrigailov's words that Sonya knew. We will not describe the
• 45:56
Speaker 1: conversation and tears of the two girls, and how friends
• 46:00
Speaker 1: they became. Dounia gained one comfort, at least from that interview,
• 46:04
Speaker 1: that her brother would not be alone. He had gone
• 46:08
Speaker 1: to her Sonya first. With his confession, he had gone
• 46:12
Speaker 1: to her for human fellowship when he needed it. She
• 46:15
Speaker 1: would go with him wherever fate might send him. Dounia
• 46:19
Speaker 1: did not ask, but she knew it was so. She
• 46:23
Speaker 1: looked at Sonya almost with reverence, and at first almost
• 46:26
Speaker 1: embarrassed her by it. Sonya was almost on the point
• 46:30
Speaker 1: of tears. She felt herself, on the contrary, hardly worthy
• 46:34
Speaker 1: to look at Dounia. Dounia's gracious image, when she had
• 46:38
Speaker 1: bowed to her so attentively and respectfully at their first
• 46:42
Speaker 1: meeting in Raskolnikov's room, had remained in her mind as
• 46:45
Speaker 1: one of the fairest visions of her life. Dounia at
• 46:50
Speaker 1: last became impatient, and, leaving Sonya, went to her brother's
• 46:54
Speaker 1: room to await him there. She kept thinking that he
• 46:57
Speaker 1: would come there first. When she had gone, Sonya began
• 47:02
Speaker 1: to be tortured by the dread of his committing suicide,
• 47:05
Speaker 1: and Dounia too feared it. But they had spent the
• 47:08
Speaker 1: day trying to persuade each other that that could not be,
• 47:12
Speaker 1: and both were less anxious while they were together. As
• 47:16
Speaker 1: soon as they parted, each thought of nothing else. Sonya
• 47:20
Speaker 1: remembered how Svidrigailov had said to her the day before
• 47:23
Speaker 1: that Raskolnikov had two alternatives, Siberia or Besides. She knew
• 47:29
Speaker 1: his vanity, his pride, and his lack of faith. Is
• 47:34
Speaker 1: it possible that he has nothing but cowardice and fear
• 47:37
Speaker 1: of death to make him live? She thought, at last,
• 47:40
Speaker 1: in despair. Meanwhile, the sun was setting. Sonya was standing
• 47:45
Speaker 1: in dejection, looking intently out of the window, but from
• 47:49
Speaker 1: it she could see nothing but the unwhitewashed blank wall
• 47:52
Speaker 1: of the next house. At last, when she began to
• 47:55
Speaker 1: feel sure of his death, he walked into the room.
• 48:00
Speaker 1: She gave a cry of joy, but looking carefully into
• 48:03
Speaker 1: his face, she turned pale yes, said Raskolnikov, smiling, I
• 48:09
Speaker 1: have come for your cross Sonya. It was you told
• 48:13
Speaker 1: me to go to the cross roads. Why is it
• 48:16
Speaker 1: you are frightened now it's come to that. Sonya gazed
• 48:19
Speaker 1: at him, astonished. His tone seemed strange to her. A
• 48:23
Speaker 1: cold shiver ran over her, but in a moment She
• 48:26
Speaker 1: guessed that the tone and the words were a mask.
• 48:30
Speaker 1: He spoke to her, looking away, as though to avoid
• 48:33
Speaker 1: meeting her eyes. You see, sonya, I've decided that it
• 48:38
Speaker 1: would be better. So there is one fact. But it's
• 48:42
Speaker 1: a long story and there's no need to discuss it.
• 48:45
Speaker 1: But do you know what angers me? It annoys me
• 48:49
Speaker 1: that all these stupid, brutish faces will be gaping at me,
• 48:52
Speaker 1: directly pestering me with their stupid questions which I shall
• 48:56
Speaker 1: have to answer. They'll point their fingers at me. Poo.
• 49:01
Speaker 1: You know I am not going to Porfiry. I am
• 49:04
Speaker 1: sick of him. I'd rather go to my friend, the
• 49:07
Speaker 1: explosive Lieutenant. How I shall surprise him? What a sensation
• 49:12
Speaker 1: I shall make? But I must be cooler. I've become
• 49:16
Speaker 1: too irritable of late. You know, I was nearly shaking
• 49:20
Speaker 1: my fist at my sister just now because she turned
• 49:23
Speaker 1: to take a last look at me. It's a brutal
• 49:26
Speaker 1: state to be in. Ah, what am I coming to? Well?
• 49:30
Speaker 1: Where are the crosses? He seemed hardly to know what
• 49:34
Speaker 1: he was doing. He could not stay still or concentrate
• 49:38
Speaker 1: his attention on anything. His idea seemed to gallop after
• 49:41
Speaker 1: one another. He talking coherently, his hands trembled slightly. Without
• 49:47
Speaker 1: a word, Sonya took out of the drawer two crosses,
• 49:50
Speaker 1: one of cypress wood and one of copper. She made
• 49:54
Speaker 1: the sign of the cross over herself and over him,
• 49:57
Speaker 1: and put the wooden cross on his neck. It's the
• 50:01
Speaker 1: symbol of my taking up the cross, he laughed, as
• 50:04
Speaker 1: though I had not suffered much till now. The wooden
• 50:08
Speaker 1: cross that is the peasant one. The copper one that
• 50:11
Speaker 1: is Lizavetta's. You will wear yourself show me so she
• 50:17
Speaker 1: had it on at that moment. I remember two things
• 50:21
Speaker 1: like these too, a silver one and a little icon.
• 50:26
Speaker 1: I threw them back on the old woman's neck. Those
• 50:29
Speaker 1: would be appropriate now, really, those are what I ought
• 50:32
Speaker 1: to put on now. But I am talking nonsense and
• 50:35
Speaker 1: forgetting what matters. I am somehow forgetful. You see. I
• 50:40
Speaker 1: have come to warn you, Sonya, so that you might
• 50:43
  Speaker 1: know that's all. That's all I came for. But I
• 50:47
Speaker 1: thought I had more to say. You wanted me to
• 50:50
Speaker 1: go yourself. Well, now I am going to prison and
• 50:54
Speaker 1: you'll have your wish. Well, what are you crying for?
• 50:58
Speaker 1: You too? Don't leave off? Oh how I hate it all,
• 51:04
Speaker 1: but his feeling was stirred. His heart ached as he
• 51:07
Speaker 1: looked at her. Why is she grieving too? He thought
• 51:11
Speaker 1: to himself, What am I to her? Why does she weep?
• 51:16
Speaker 1: Why is she looking after me? Like my mother or Dounia?
• 51:20
Speaker 1: She'll be my nurse. Cross yourself, say at least one prayer.
• 51:26
Speaker 1: Sonya begged in a timid, broken voice. Oh, certainly, as
• 51:31
Speaker 1: much as you like, and sincerely, Sonya, sincerely, But he
• 51:36
Speaker 1: wanted to say something quite different. He crossed himself several times.
• 51:42
Speaker 1: Sonya took up her shawl and put it over her head.
• 51:45
Speaker 1: It was the green dropped Adam shawl of which Marmeladov
• 51:49
Speaker 1: had spoken the family shawl. Raskolnikov thought of that looking
• 51:53
Speaker 1: at it, but he did not ask. He began to
• 51:57
Speaker 1: feel himself that he was certainly forgetting things, and was
• 52:00
Speaker 1: disgustingly agitated. He was frightened at this. He was suddenly
• 52:05
Speaker 1: struck too by the thought that Sonya meant to go
• 52:08
Speaker 1: with him. What are you doing? Where are you going?
• 52:12
Speaker 1: Stay here? Stay I'll go alone, he cried, in cowardly
• 52:17
Speaker 1: vexation and almost resentful. He moved towards the door. What's
• 52:22
Speaker 1: the use of going in procession, he muttered, going out,
• 52:27
Speaker 1: Sonya remained standing in the middle of the room. He
• 52:30
Speaker 1: had not even said good bye to her, He had
• 52:32
Speaker 1: forgotten her. A poignant and rebellious doubt surged in his heart.
• 52:39
Speaker 1: Was it right? Was it right? All this? He thought again,
• 52:42
Speaker 1: as he went down the stairs. Couldn't he stop and
• 52:46
Speaker 1: retract it all and not go? But still he went.
• 52:51
Speaker 1: He felt suddenly once for all, that he mustn't ask
• 52:54
Speaker 1: himself questions. As he turned into the street, he remembered
• 52:58
Speaker 1: that he had not said good bye to that he
• 53:01
Speaker 1: had left her in the middle of the room in
• 53:03
Speaker 1: her green shawl, not daring to stir after he had
• 53:06
Speaker 1: shouted at her, and he stopped short for a moment.
• 53:10
Speaker 1: At the same instant, another thought dawned upon him, as
• 53:14
Speaker 1: though it had been lying in wait to strike him. Then,
• 53:18
Speaker 1: why with what object did I go to her just now?
• 53:22
Speaker 1: I told her on business? On what business? I had
• 53:26
Speaker 1: no sort of business to tell her I was going?
• 53:30
Speaker 1: But where was the need? Do I love her? No? No,
• 53:35
Speaker 1: I drove her away just now like a dog. Did
• 53:39
Speaker 1: I want her crosses? Oh? How low I've sunk? No?
• 53:44
Speaker 1: I wanted her tears? I wanted to see her terror,
• 53:47
Speaker 1: to see how her heart ached. I had to have
• 53:50
Speaker 1: something to cling to, something to delay me, some friendly
• 53:54
Speaker 1: face to see. And I dared to believe in myself
• 53:58
Speaker 1: to dream of what I would do. I am a
• 54:01
Speaker 1: beggarly contemptible wretch, contemptible. He walked along the canal bank,
• 54:07
Speaker 1: and he had not much further to go, But on
• 54:10
Speaker 1: reaching the bridge, he stopped, and, turning out of his
• 54:13
Speaker 1: way along it went to the haymarket. He looked eagerly
• 54:16
Speaker 1: to right and left, gazed intently at every object, and
• 54:20
Speaker 1: could not fix his attention on anything. Everything slipped away.
• 54:25
Speaker 1: In another week, another month, I shall be driven in
• 54:29
Speaker 1: a prison van over this bridge. How shall I look
• 54:32
Speaker 1: at the canal? Then? I should like to remember? This
• 54:36
Speaker 1: slipped into his mind. Look at that sign? How shall
• 54:40
Speaker 1: I read those letters? Then? It's written here campany. That's
• 54:45
Speaker 1: a thing to remember that letter A and to look
• 54:48
Speaker 1: at it again in a month. How shall I look
• 54:51
Speaker 1: at it? Then? What shall I be feeling and thinking? Then?
• 54:56
Speaker 1: How trivial it all must be? What I am fretting
• 54:59
Speaker 1: about now? Of course it must all be interesting in
• 55:03
Speaker 1: its way, ha ha? What am I thinking about? I
• 55:07
Speaker 1: am becoming a baby. I am showing off to myself.
• 55:11
Speaker 1: Why am I ashamed? Foo? How people shove that fat man?
• 55:17
Speaker 1: A German? He must be who pushed against me? Does
• 55:21
Speaker 1: he know whom he pushed? There's a peasant woman with
• 55:24
Speaker 1: a baby begging. It's curious that she thinks me happier
• 55:28
Speaker 1: than she is. I might give her something for the
• 55:32
Speaker 1: incongruity of it. Here's a five kopeck piece left in
• 55:35
Speaker 1: my pocket. Where did I get it? Here? Here? Take it,
• 55:40
Speaker 1: my good woman, God bless you. The beggar chanted in
• 55:45
Speaker 1: a lachrymose voice. He went into the haymarket. It was distasteful,
• 55:51
Speaker 1: very distasteful to be in a crowd, but he walked
• 55:54
Speaker 1: just where he saw most people. He would have given
• 55:57
Speaker 1: anything in the world to be alone, but he knew
• 56:00
Speaker 1: himself that he would not have remained alone for a moment.
• 56:04
Speaker 1: There was a man drunk and disorderly in the crowd.
• 56:07
Speaker 1: He kept trying to dance and falling down. There was
• 56:11
Speaker 1: a ring round him. Raskolnikov squeezed his way through the crowd,
• 56:15
Speaker 1: stared for some minutes at the drunken man, and suddenly
• 56:18
Speaker 1: gave a short, jerky laugh. A minute later he had
• 56:22
Speaker 1: forgotten him and did not see him, though he still stared.
• 56:26
Speaker 1: He moved away at last, not remembering where he was.
• 56:30
Speaker 1: But when he got into the middle of the square
• 56:32
Speaker 1: and emotions suddenly came over him, overwhelming him body and mind.
• 56:37
Speaker 1: He suddenly recalled Sonya's words, go to the crossroads, bow
• 56:42
Speaker 1: down to the people, kiss the earth, for you have
• 56:46
Speaker 1: sinned against it too, and say aloud to the whole world,
• 56:50
Speaker 1: I am a murderer. He trembled, remembering that, and the
• 56:55
Speaker 1: hopeless misery and anxiety of all that time, especially of
• 56:59
Speaker 1: the last hours, had weighed so heavily upon him that
• 57:03
Speaker 1: he positively clutched at the chance of this new, unmixed,
• 57:06
Speaker 1: complete sensation. It came over him like a fit. It
• 57:11
Speaker 1: was like a single spark kindled in his soul and
• 57:13
Speaker 1: spreading fire through him. Everything in him softened at once,
• 57:18
Speaker 1: and the tears started into his eyes. He fell to
• 57:21
Speaker 1: the earth on the spot. He knelt down in the
• 57:24
Speaker 1: middle of the square, bowed down to the earth, and
• 57:27
Speaker 1: kissed that filthy earth with bliss and rapture. He got up,
• 57:31
Speaker 1: bowed down a second time. He's boozed. A youth near
• 57:36
Speaker 1: him observed there was a roar of laughter. He is
• 57:41
Speaker 1: going to Jerusalem, brothers, and saying goodbye to his children
• 57:44
Speaker 1: and his country. He's bowing down to all the world
• 57:48
Speaker 1: and kissing the great city of Saint Petersburg and its pavement.
• 57:52
Speaker 1: Added a workman who was a little drunk. Quite a
• 57:56
Speaker 1: young man too, observed. A third and a gentle woman
• 58:00
Speaker 1: somewhat observed soberly. There's no knowing who's a gentleman and
• 58:05
Speaker 1: who isn't. Nowadays. These exclamations and remarks checked Russkolnikov, and
• 58:11
Speaker 1: the words I am a murderer, which were perhaps on
• 58:14
Speaker 1: the point of dropping from his lips, died away. He
• 58:18
Speaker 1: bore these remarks quietly, however, and without looking round, he
• 58:21
Speaker 1: turned down a street leading to the police office. He
• 58:25
Speaker 1: had a glimpse of something on the way which did
• 58:27
Speaker 1: not surprise him. He had felt that it must be so.
• 58:31
Speaker 1: The second time he bowed down in the haymarket, he
• 58:34
Speaker 1: saw standing fifty paces from him on the left, Sonya.
• 58:38
Speaker 1: She was hiding from him behind one of the wooden
• 58:41
Speaker 1: shanties in the marketplace. She had followed him then on
• 58:45
Speaker 1: his painful way. Raskolnikov, at that moment felt and knew
• 58:49
Speaker 1: once for all that Sonya was with him forever and
• 58:52
Speaker 1: would follow him to the ends of the earth, wherever
• 58:55
Speaker 1: fate might take him. It wrung his heart, but he
• 58:58
Speaker 1: was just reaching the face place. He went into the
• 59:02
Speaker 1: yard fairly resolutely. He had to mount to the third story.
• 59:07
Speaker 1: I shall be some time going up, he thought. He
• 59:11
Speaker 1: felt as though the fateful moment was still far off,
• 59:14
Speaker 1: as though he had plenty of time left for consideration. Again,
• 59:18
Speaker 1: the same rubbish, the same eggshells lying about on the
• 59:22
Speaker 1: spiral stairs. Again, the open doors of the flats. Again,
• 59:26
Speaker 1: the same kitchens, and the same fumes and stench coming
• 59:29
Speaker 1: from them. Raskolnikov had not been there since that day.
• 59:34
Speaker 1: His legs were numb and gave way under him, but
• 59:37
Speaker 1: still they moved forward. He stopped for a moment to
• 59:40
Speaker 1: take breath, to collect himself, so as to enter like
• 59:44
Speaker 1: a man. But why what for? He wondered, reflecting, if
• 59:50
Speaker 1: I must drink the cup, what difference does it make?
• 59:53
Speaker 1: The more revolting, the better, He imagined for an instant
• 59:57
Speaker 1: the figure of the explosive Lieutenant Ilya Petrovitch. Was he
• 1:00:01
Speaker 1: actually going to him? Couldn't he go to someone else
• 1:00:05
Speaker 1: to nicodem Fomitch. Couldn't he turn back and go straight
• 1:00:09
Speaker 1: to nicodem Fomitch's lodgings. At least then it would be
• 1:00:12
Speaker 1: done privately. No, no, to the explosive Lieutenant. If he
• 1:00:18
Speaker 1: must drink it, drink it off at once. Turning cold
• 1:00:22
Speaker 1: and hardly conscious, he opened the door of the office.
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: There were very few people in it this time, only
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: a house porter and a peasant. The doorkeeper did not
• 1:00:32
Speaker 1: even peep out from behind his screen. Russ Kolnikov walked
• 1:00:36
Speaker 1: into the next room. Perhaps I still need not speak,
• 1:00:41
Speaker 1: passed through his mind. Some sort of clerk, not wearing
• 1:00:44
Speaker 1: a uniform was settling himself at a bureau to write.
• 1:00:47
Speaker 1: In a corner. Another clerk was seating himself. Zamatov was
• 1:00:51
Speaker 1: not there, nor, of course, nicodem Fomitch. No one in.
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: Russ Kolnikov asked, addressing the person at the bureau, whom
• 1:01:01
Speaker 1: do you want? Ah? Not a sound was heard, not
• 1:01:05
Speaker 1: a sight was seen, But I sent the Russian. How
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: does it go on in the fairy tale? I've forgotten?
• 1:01:13
Speaker 1: At your service, a familiar voice cried. Suddenly, Ruskolnikov shuddered.
• 1:01:19
Speaker 1: The explosive lieutenant stood before him. He had just come
• 1:01:23
Speaker 1: in from the third room. It is the hand of fate,
• 1:01:27
Speaker 1: thought Ruskolnikov. Why is he here? You've come to see us?
• 1:01:32
Speaker 1: What about? Cried Ilya Petrovitch. He was obviously in an
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: exceedingly good humor and perhaps a trifle exhilarated. If it's
• 1:01:41
Speaker 1: on business, you are rather early. It's only chance that
• 1:01:45
  Speaker 1: I am here. However, I'll do what I can. I
• 1:01:48
Speaker 1: must admit I what is it? When is it? Excuse me, Russkolnikov.
• 1:01:55
Speaker 1: Of course, Russkolnikov, you didn't imagine I'd forgotten. Don't think
• 1:01:59
Speaker 1: I am like that, Rodion ro Rodyanovitch. That's it, isn't it,
• 1:02:06
Speaker 1: Rodean Romanovitch, Yes, yes, of course, Rodeon Romanovitch. I was
• 1:02:12
Speaker 1: just getting at it. I made many inquiries about you.
• 1:02:16
Speaker 1: I assure you I've been genuinely grieved since that, since
• 1:02:20
Speaker 1: I behave like that. It was explained to me afterwards
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: that you were a literary man, and a lerned one too,
• 1:02:26
Speaker 1: And so to say the first steps mercy on us.
• 1:02:30
Speaker 1: What literary or scientific man does not begin by some
• 1:02:33
Speaker 1: originality of conduct? My wife and I have the greatest
• 1:02:37
Speaker 1: respect for literature in my wife. It's a genuine passion
• 1:02:41
Speaker 1: literature and art. If only a man is a gentleman,
• 1:02:45
Speaker 1: all the rest can be gained by talents, learning, good sense, genius.
• 1:02:50
Speaker 1: As for a hat, well, what does a hat matter?
• 1:02:53
Speaker 1: I can buy a hat as easy as I can
• 1:02:55
Speaker 1: a bun. But what's under the hat? What the hat covers?
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: I can't buy that. I was even meaning to come
• 1:03:03
Speaker 1: and apologize to you, but thought maybe you'd But I
• 1:03:07
Speaker 1: am forgetting to ask you. Is there anything you want? Really?
• 1:03:10
Speaker 1: I hear your family have come. Yes, my mother and sister.
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: I've even had the honor and happiness of meeting your sister,
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: a highly cultivated and charming person. I confess I was
• 1:03:23
Speaker 1: sorry I got so hot with you. There it is.
• 1:03:28
Speaker 1: But as for my looking suspiciously at your fainting fit,
• 1:03:31
Speaker 1: that affair has been cleared up splendidly bigotry and fanaticism.
• 1:03:35
Speaker 1: I understand your indignation. Perhaps you are changing your lodging
• 1:03:39
Speaker 1: on account of your family's arriving. No, I only looked in.
• 1:03:44
Speaker 1: I came to ask. I thought that I should find
• 1:03:47
Speaker 1: Zamatov here. Oh, yes, of course you've made friends. I
• 1:03:52
Speaker 1: heard well, no, Zamatov is not here. Yes, we've lost Zamatov.
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: He's not been here since yesterday. He quarreled with every
• 1:04:01
Speaker 1: one on leaving in the rudest way. He is a
• 1:04:05
Speaker 1: feather headed youngster, that's all. One might have expected something
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: from him, but there, you know what they are are
• 1:04:12
Speaker 1: brilliant young men. He wanted to go in for some examination,
• 1:04:16
Speaker 1: but it's only to talk and boast about it. It
• 1:04:19
Speaker 1: will go no further than that. Of course, it's a
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: very different matter with you are, mister Razumian there, your friend.
• 1:04:25
Speaker 1: Your career is an intellectual one, and you won't be
• 1:04:28
Speaker 1: deterred by failure. For you, one may say, all the
• 1:04:32
Speaker 1: attractions of life nihil est. You are an ascetic, a monk,
• 1:04:36
  Speaker 1: a hermit, a book, a pen behind your ear, a
• 1:04:40
Speaker 1: learned research. That's where your spirit soars. I am that
• 1:04:44
Speaker 1: way myself. Have you read Livingstone's travels? No? Oh, I have.
• 1:04:51
Speaker 1: There are a great many nihilists about nowadays, you know,
• 1:04:54
Speaker 1: And indeed it is not to be wondered at what
• 1:04:57
Speaker 1: sort of days are they? I ask you? But we
• 1:05:00
Speaker 1: thought you are not a nihilist? Of course, answer me openly, openly,
• 1:05:06
Speaker 1: No believe me. You can speak openly to me as
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: you would to yourself. Official duty is one thing, but
• 1:05:15
Speaker 1: you are thinking I meant to say friendship is quite another. No,
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: you're wrong. It's not friendship, but the feeling of a
• 1:05:22
Speaker 1: man and a citizen, the feeling of humanity and of
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: love for the almighty. I may be an official, but
• 1:05:29
Speaker 1: I am always bound to feel myself a man and
• 1:05:32
Speaker 1: a citizen. You are asking about Zamatov. Zamatov will make
• 1:05:36
Speaker 1: a scandal in the French style, in a house of
• 1:05:39
Speaker 1: bad reputation over a glass of champagne. That's all your
• 1:05:43
Speaker 1: Zamatov is good for. Well, I'm, perhaps, so to speak,
• 1:05:47
Speaker 1: burning with devotion and lofty feelings. And besides, I have
• 1:05:51
Speaker 1: rank consequence a post. I am married and have children.
• 1:05:55
Speaker 1: I fulfill the duties of a man and a citizen.
• 1:05:59
Speaker 1: But who is he? May I ask? I appeal to
• 1:06:02
Speaker 1: you as a man ennobled by education. Then these midwives
• 1:06:06
Speaker 1: too have become extraordinarily numerous. Russkolnikov raised his eyebrows inquiringly.
• 1:06:13
Speaker 1: The words of Ilya Petrovitch, who had obviously been dining,
• 1:06:16
Speaker 1: were for the most part a stream of empty sounds.
• 1:06:19
Speaker 1: For him, but some of them, he understood. He looked
• 1:06:23
Speaker 1: at him inquiringly, not knowing how it would end. I
• 1:06:28
Speaker 1: mean those crop headed wenches. The talkative Ilya Petrovitch continued.
• 1:06:33
Speaker 1: Midwives is my name for them. I think it a
• 1:06:36
Speaker 1: very satisfactory one. Ha ha. They go to the academy
• 1:06:39
Speaker 1: study anatomy. If I fall ill am I to send
• 1:06:43
Speaker 1: for a young lady to treat me, what do you say?
• 1:06:45
Speaker 1: Ha ha? Ilyya Petrovitch laughed, quite pleased with his own wit.
• 1:06:51
Speaker 1: It's an immoderate zeal for education. But once you're educated,
• 1:06:55
Speaker 1: that's enough. Why abuse it? Why insult honorable people as
• 1:06:59
Speaker 1: that's scoundrel Zamatov does. Why did he insult me? I
• 1:07:03
Speaker 1: ask you look at these suicides too, how common they are.
• 1:07:08
Speaker 1: You can't fancy people spend their last halfpenny and kill themselves,
• 1:07:12
Speaker 1: boys and girls and old people. Only this morning we
• 1:07:16
Speaker 1: heard about a gentleman who had just come to town, Neil Pavlich.
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: I say, what was the name of that gentleman who
• 1:07:22
Speaker 1: shot himself? Svidrigailov, someone answered from the other room with
• 1:07:27
Speaker 1: a drowsy listlessness. Ruskolnikov started, Svidrigailov. Svidrigailov has shot himself.
• 1:07:35
Speaker 1: He cried, what do you know, Svidrigailov? Yes, I knew him.
• 1:07:41
Speaker 1: He hadn't been here long. Yes, that's so. He had
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: lost his wife, was a man of reckless habits, and
• 1:07:48
Speaker 1: all of a sudden shot himself, and in such a
• 1:07:51
Speaker 1: shocking way. He left in his notebook a few words
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: that he dies in full possession of his faculties, and
• 1:07:58
Speaker 1: that no one is to blame for his death. He
• 1:08:00
Speaker 1: had money. They say, how did you come to know him?
• 1:08:04
Speaker 1: I was acquainted. My sister was governess in his family.
• 1:08:09
Speaker 1: Bah bah bah. Then no doubt you can tell us
• 1:08:11
Speaker 1: something about him. You had no suspicion. I saw him yesterday.
• 1:08:16
Speaker 1: He was drinking wine. I knew nothing. Russ Kolnikov felt
• 1:08:22
Speaker 1: as though something had fallen on him and was stifling him.
• 1:08:26
Speaker 1: You've turned pale again. It's so stuffy here. Yes, I
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: must go, muttered Raskolnikov. Excuse my troubling you? Oh, not
• 1:08:36
Speaker 1: at all, as often as you like. It's a pleasure
• 1:08:39
Speaker 1: to see you, and I am glad to say so. ILYA.
• 1:08:43
Speaker 1: Petrovitch held out his hand. I only wanted I came
• 1:08:48
  Speaker 1: to see Zamutov. I understand I understand, and it's a
• 1:08:52
Speaker 1: pleasure to see you. I am very glad. Goodbye, Russkolnikov smiled.
• 1:09:00
Speaker 1: He went out. He reeled. He was overtaken with giddiness
• 1:09:04
Speaker 1: and did not know what he was doing. He began
• 1:09:07
Speaker 1: going down the stairs, supporting himself with his right hand
• 1:09:10
Speaker 1: against the wall. He fancied that a porter pushed past
• 1:09:14
Speaker 1: him on his way upstairs to the police office, that
• 1:09:17
Speaker 1: a dog in the lower story kept up a shrill barking,
• 1:09:20
Speaker 1: and that a woman flung a rolling pin at it
• 1:09:22
Speaker 1: and shouted. He went down and out into the yard. There,
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: not far from the entrance, stood Sonya, pale and horror stricken.
• 1:09:31
Speaker 1: She looked wildly at him. He stood still before her.
• 1:09:36
Speaker 1: There was a look of poignant agony of despair in
• 1:09:39
Speaker 1: her face. She clasped her hands. His lips worked in
• 1:09:43
Speaker 1: an ugly, meaningless smile. He stood still a minute, grinned,
• 1:09:48
Speaker 1: and went back to the police office. Ilya Petrovitch had
• 1:09:53
Speaker 1: sat down and was rummaging among some papers. Before him
• 1:09:56
Speaker 1: stood the same peasant who had pushed by on the stairs.
• 1:10:00
Speaker 1: Hullo back again, have you left something behind? What's the matter? Raskolnikov,
• 1:10:07
Speaker 1: with white lips and staring eyes came slowly nearer. He
• 1:10:11
Speaker 1: walked right to the table, leaned his hand on it,
• 1:10:14
Speaker 1: tried to say something, but could not. Only incoherent sounds
• 1:10:18
Speaker 1: were audible. You are feeling ill, a chair here, Sit down,
• 1:10:23
Speaker 1: some water. Raskolnikov dropped onto a chair, but he kept
• 1:10:28
Speaker 1: his eyes fixed on the face of Ilya Petrovitch, which
• 1:10:31
Speaker 1: expressed unpleasant surprise. Both looked at one another for a
• 1:10:35
Speaker 1: minute and waited. Water was brought. It was I, began Raskolnikov.
• 1:10:43
Speaker 1: Drink some water. Raskolnikov refused the water with his hand,
• 1:10:47
Speaker 1: and softly and brokenly, but distinctly, said, it was I
• 1:10:53
Speaker 1: killed the old pawnbroker woman and her sister, Lizavetta with
• 1:10:57
Speaker 1: an axe and robbed them. Ilya Petrovitch opened his mouth.
• 1:11:03
Speaker 1: People ran up on all sides. Ruskolnikov repeated his statement.
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: End of Part six, Chapter eight, Epilogue one. Siberia. On
• 1:11:18
Speaker 1: the banks of a broad solitary river stands a town,
• 1:11:21
Speaker 1: one of the administrative centers of Russia. In the town,
• 1:11:25
Speaker 1: there is a fortress. In the fortress, there is a prison.
• 1:11:29
Speaker 1: In the prison, the second class convict rodeon Ruskolnikov has
• 1:11:33
Speaker 1: been confined for nine months. Almost a year and a
• 1:11:37
Speaker 1: half has passed since his crime. There had been little
• 1:11:41
Speaker 1: difficulty about his trial. The criminal adhered exactly, firmly and
• 1:11:45
Speaker 1: clearly to his statement. He did not confuse nor misrepresent
• 1:11:50
Speaker 1: the facts, nor soften them in his own interest, nor
• 1:11:54
Speaker 1: omit the smallest detail. He explained every incident of the murder,
• 1:11:59
Speaker 1: the secret of the pledge, the piece of wood with
• 1:12:02
Speaker 1: a strip of metal, which was found in the murdered
• 1:12:04
Speaker 1: woman's hand. He described minutely how he had taken her keys,
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: what they were like, as well as the chest and
• 1:12:11
Speaker 1: its contents. He explained the mystery of Lizavetta's murder, described
• 1:12:16
Speaker 1: how Coke and after him the student knocked, and repeated
• 1:12:20
Speaker 1: all they had said to one another, how he had
• 1:12:23
Speaker 1: afterwards had run downstairs and heard Nikolay and Dmitri shouting,
• 1:12:27
Speaker 1: how he had hidden in the empty flat and afterwards
• 1:12:30
Speaker 1: gone home. He ended by indicating the stone in the
• 1:12:34
Speaker 1: yard off the Voznasensky prospect, under which the purse and
• 1:12:38
Speaker 1: the trinkets were found. The whole thing, in fact, was
• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: perfectly clear. The lawyers and the judges were very much
• 1:12:46
Speaker 1: struck among other things, by the fact that he had
• 1:12:49
Speaker 1: hidden the trinkets and the purse under a stone without
• 1:12:52
Speaker 1: making use of them, and that, what was more, he
• 1:12:55
Speaker 1: did not now remember what the trinkets were like or
• 1:12:58
Speaker 1: even how many there were. The fact that he had
• 1:13:01
Speaker 1: never opened the purse and did not even know how
• 1:13:04
Speaker 1: much was in it seemed incredible. There turned out to
• 1:13:07
Speaker 1: be in the purse three hundred and seventeen roubles and
• 1:13:10
Speaker 1: sixty copecks. From being so long under the stone, some
• 1:13:14
Speaker 1: of the most valuable notes lying uppermost had suffered from
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: the damp. They were a long while trying to discover
• 1:13:20
Speaker 1: why the accused man should tell a lie about this
• 1:13:24
Speaker 1: when about everything else he had made a truthful and
• 1:13:26
Speaker 1: straightforward confession. Finally, some of the lawyers more versed in
• 1:13:31
Speaker 1: psychology admitted that it was possible he had really not
• 1:13:34
Speaker 1: looked into the purse and so didn't know what was
• 1:13:37
Speaker 1: in it when he hid it under the stone, But
• 1:13:40
Speaker 1: they immediately drew the deduction that the crime could only
• 1:13:43
Speaker 1: have been committed through temporary mental derangement through homicidal menia
• 1:13:48
Speaker 1: without object or the pursuit of gain. This fell in
• 1:13:52
Speaker 1: with the most recent fashionable theory of temporary insanity, so
• 1:13:56
Speaker 1: often applied in our days in criminal cases. Moreover, Russkolnikov's
• 1:14:01
Speaker 1: hypochondriacal condition was proved by many waknesses by doctor Zossimov,
• 1:14:06
Speaker 1: his former fellow students, his landlady, and her servant. All
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: this pointed strongly to the conclusion that russ Kolnikov was
• 1:14:15
Speaker 1: not quite like an ordinary murderer and robber, but that
• 1:14:19
Speaker 1: there was another element in the case. To the intense
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: annoyance of those who maintained this opinion, the criminal scarcely
• 1:14:26
Speaker 1: attempted to defend himself to the decisive question as to
• 1:14:30
Speaker 1: what motive impelled him to the murder and the robbery.
• 1:14:33
Speaker 1: He answered very clearly, with the coarsest frankness, that the
• 1:14:37
Speaker 1: cause was his miserable position, his poverty and helplessness, and
• 1:14:41
Speaker 1: his desire to provide for his first steps in life
• 1:14:44
Speaker 1: by the help of the three thousand roubles he had
• 1:14:46
Speaker 1: reckoned on finding he had been led to the murder
• 1:14:49
Speaker 1: through his shallow and cowardly nature. Exasperated moreover by privation
• 1:14:54
Speaker 1: and failure, to the question what led him to confess,
• 1:14:58
Speaker 1: he answered that it was his heart felt repentance. All
• 1:15:02
Speaker 1: this was almost coarse. The sentence, however, was more merciful
• 1:15:07
Speaker 1: than could have been expected, perhaps partly because the criminal
• 1:15:11
Speaker 1: had not tried to justify himself, but had rather shown
• 1:15:14
Speaker 1: a desire to exaggerate his guilt. All the strange and
• 1:15:18
Speaker 1: peculiar circumstances of the crime were taken into consideration. There
• 1:15:23
Speaker 1: could be no doubt of the abnormal and poverty stricken
• 1:15:26
Speaker 1: condition of the criminal at the time. The fact that
• 1:15:29
Speaker 1: he had made no use of what he had stolen
• 1:15:31
Speaker 1: was put down partly to the effect of remorse, partly
• 1:15:34
Speaker 1: to his abnormal mental condition at the time of the crime. Incidentally,
• 1:15:38
Speaker 1: the murder of Lezavetta served, indeed, to confirm the last hypothesis,
• 1:15:43
Speaker 1: a man commits two murders and forgets that the door
• 1:15:46
Speaker 1: is open. Finally, the confession, at the very moments when
• 1:15:50
Speaker 1: the case was hopelessly muddled by the false evidence given
• 1:15:53
Speaker 1: by Nikolay through melancholy and fanaticism, and when moreover there
• 1:15:58
Speaker 1: were no proofs against the real cris criminal, no suspicions,
• 1:16:01
Speaker 1: even Porfiry Petrovitch fully kept his word. All this did
• 1:16:06
Speaker 1: much to soften the sentence. Other circumstances too, in the
• 1:16:10
Speaker 1: prisoner's favor came out quite unexpectedly. Razumiyin somehow discovered and
• 1:16:16
Speaker 1: proved that while russ Kolnikov was at the university, he
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: had helped a poor, consumptive fellow student and had spent
• 1:16:23
Speaker 1: his last penny on supporting him for six months. And
• 1:16:26
Speaker 1: when this student died, leaving a decrepit old father whom
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: he had maintained almost from his thirteenth year, Russkolnikov had
• 1:16:34
Speaker 1: got the old man into a hospital and paid for
• 1:16:36
Speaker 1: his funeral when he died. Russkolnikov's landlady bore witness too
• 1:16:42
Speaker 1: that when they had lived in another house at five Corners,
• 1:16:45
Speaker 1: Ruskolnikov had rescued two little children from a house on
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: fire and was burnt in doing so. This was investigated
• 1:16:53
Speaker 1: and fairly well confirmed by many witnesses. These facts made
• 1:16:57
Speaker 1: an impression in his favor, and in the end the
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: criminal was, in consideration of extenuating circumstances, condemned to penal
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: servitude in the second class for a term of eight years. Only.
• 1:17:11
Speaker 1: At the very beginning of the trial, Raskolnikov's mother fell ill.
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: Dounia and Razumian found it possible to get her out
• 1:17:18
Speaker 1: of Petersburg during the trial. Razumian chose a town on
• 1:17:22
Speaker 1: the railway not far from Petersburg, so as to be
• 1:17:25
Speaker 1: able to follow every step of the trial and at
• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: the same time to see Avdotya Romanovna as often as possible.
• 1:17:32
Speaker 1: Pulcheria Alexandrovna's illness was a strange, nervous one and was
• 1:17:36
Speaker 1: accompanied by a partial derangement of her intellect. When Donia
• 1:17:41
Speaker 1: returned from her last interview with her brother, she had
• 1:17:43
Speaker 1: found her mother already ill in feverish delirium. That evening,
• 1:17:48
Speaker 1: Razumian and she agreed what answers they must make to
• 1:17:51
Speaker 1: her mother's questions about Raskolnikov, and made up a complete
• 1:17:55
Speaker 1: story for her mother's benefit of his having to go
• 1:17:58
Speaker 1: away to a distant part of Russia a business commission
• 1:18:01
Speaker 1: which would bring him in the end money and reputation.
• 1:18:05
Speaker 1: But they were struck by the fact that Pulcheria Alexandrovna
• 1:18:08
Speaker 1: never asked them anything on the subject, neither then nor thereafter.
• 1:18:13
Speaker 1: On the contrary, she had her own version of her
• 1:18:16
Speaker 1: son's sudden departure. She told them with tears how he
• 1:18:20
Speaker 1: had come to say goodbye to her hinting that she
• 1:18:23
Speaker 1: alone knew many mysterious and important facts, and that Rodya
• 1:18:27
Speaker 1: had many very powerful enemies, so that it was necessary
• 1:18:30
Speaker 1: for him to be in hiding. As for his future career,
• 1:18:34
Speaker 1: she had no doubt that it would be brilliant when
• 1:18:37
Speaker 1: certain sinister influences could be removed. She assured Razumiin that
• 1:18:41
Speaker 1: her son would be one day a great statesman, that
• 1:18:44
Speaker 1: his article and brilliant literary talent proved it. This article
• 1:18:48
Speaker 1: she was continually reading. She even read it aloud, almost
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: took it to bed with her, but scarcely asked where
• 1:18:55
Speaker 1: Rodya was, though the subject was obviously avoided by the others,
• 1:18:59
Speaker 1: which might have been enough to awaken her suspicions. They
• 1:19:03
Speaker 1: began to be frightened at last at Pulcheria Alexandrovna's strange
• 1:19:07
Speaker 1: silence on certain subjects. She did not, for instance, complain
• 1:19:11
Speaker 1: of getting no letters from him, though in previous years
• 1:19:14
Speaker 1: she had only lived on the hope of letters from
• 1:19:16
Speaker 1: her beloved Rodya. This was the cause of great uneasiness
• 1:19:20
Speaker 1: to Dounia. The idea occurred to her that her mother
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: suspected that there was something terrible in her son's fate.
• 1:19:27
Speaker 1: And was afraid to ask for fear of hearing something
• 1:19:30
Speaker 1: still more awful. In any case, Dounia saw clearly that
• 1:19:35
Speaker 1: her mother was not in full possession of her faculties.
• 1:19:39
Speaker 1: It happened once or twice, however, that Pulcheria Alexandrovna gave
• 1:19:43
Speaker 1: such a turn to the conversation that it was impossible
• 1:19:46
Speaker 1: to answer her without mentioning where Rodya was, And on
• 1:19:49
Speaker 1: receiving unsatisfactory and suspicious answers, she became at once gloomy
• 1:19:54
Speaker 1: and silent, and this mood lasted for a long time.
• 1:19:59
Speaker 1: Dounia saw it las last that it was hard to
• 1:20:01
Speaker 1: deceive her and came to the conclusion that it was
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: better to be absolutely silent on certain points. But it
• 1:20:07
Speaker 1: became more and more evident that the poor mother suspected
• 1:20:10
Speaker 1: something terrible. Donia remembered her brother's telling her that her
• 1:20:15
Speaker 1: mother had overheard her talking in her sleep on the
• 1:20:18
Speaker 1: night after her interview with Svidrigailov and before the fatal
• 1:20:22
Speaker 1: day of the confession, had not She made out something
• 1:20:25
Speaker 1: from that sometimes days and even weeks of gloomy silence
• 1:20:29
Speaker 1: and tears would be succeeded by a period of hysterical animation,
• 1:20:34
Speaker 1: and the invalid would begin to talk almost incessantly of
• 1:20:37
Speaker 1: her son, of her hopes of his future. Her fancies
• 1:20:41
Speaker 1: were sometimes very strange. They humored her, pretending to agree
• 1:20:46
Speaker 1: with her. She saw perhaps that they were pretending, but
• 1:20:50
Speaker 1: she still went on talking. Five months after Raskolnikov's confession,
• 1:20:55
Speaker 1: he was sentenced Razumiyin and Sonya saw him in prison
• 1:20:59
Speaker 1: as often as it was possible. At last, the moment
• 1:21:03
Speaker 1: of separation came. Dounia swore to her brother that the
• 1:21:06
Speaker 1: separation should not be forever. Razumian did the same. Razumian,
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: in his youthful ardor, had firmly resolved to lay the
• 1:21:15
Speaker 1: foundations at least of a secure livelihood during the next
• 1:21:18
Speaker 1: three or four years, and saving up a certain sum,
• 1:21:21
Speaker 1: to emigrate to Siberia, a country rich in every natural
• 1:21:25
Speaker 1: resource and in need of workers, active men, and capital.
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: There they would settle in the town where Rodya was,
• 1:21:32
Speaker 1: and all together would begin a new life. They all
• 1:21:35
Speaker 1: wept at parting. Raskolnikov had been very dreamy for a
• 1:21:40
Speaker 1: few days before. He asked a great deal about his
• 1:21:43
Speaker 1: mother and was constantly anxious about her. He worried so
• 1:21:47
Speaker 1: much about her that it alarmed Dounia. When he heard
• 1:21:50
Speaker 1: about his mother's illness, he became very gloomy. With Sonia.
• 1:21:55
Speaker 1: He was particularly reserved all the time, with the help
• 1:21:59
Speaker 1: of the money left to her by Svidrigailov. Sonya had
• 1:22:02
Speaker 1: long ago made her preparations to follow the party of
• 1:22:05
Speaker 1: convicts in which he was dispatched to Siberia. Not a
• 1:22:08
Speaker 1: word passed between Raskolnikov and her on the subject, but
• 1:22:12
Speaker 1: both knew it would be so. At the final leave taking,
• 1:22:16
Speaker 1: he smiled strangely at his sister's and Razumian's fervent anticipations
• 1:22:20
Speaker 1: of their happy future together when he should come out
• 1:22:23
Speaker 1: of prison. He predicted that their mother's illness would soon
• 1:22:27
Speaker 1: have a fatal ending. Sonya and he at last set off.
• 1:22:32
Speaker 1: Two months later, Donia was married to Razumian. It was
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: a quiet and sorrowful wedding. Porfiry, Petrovitch and Zosimov were invited. However,
• 1:22:42
Speaker 1: during all this period, Razumiyan wore an air of resolute determination.
• 1:22:47
Speaker 1: Donia put implicit faith in his carrying out his plans,
• 1:22:50
Speaker 1: and indeed she could not but believe in him. He
• 1:22:54
Speaker 1: displayed a rare strength of will. Among other things, he
• 1:22:58
Speaker 1: began attending university lectures again and in order to take
• 1:23:01
Speaker 1: his degree. They were continually making plans for the future.
• 1:23:05
Speaker 1: Both counted on settling in Siberia within five years, at
• 1:23:08
Speaker 1: least till then they rested their hopes on Sonya. Pulcheria
• 1:23:14
Speaker 1: Alexandrovna was delighted to give her blessing to Donia's marriage
• 1:23:18
Speaker 1: with Razumiyan, but after the marriage she became even more
• 1:23:21
Speaker 1: melancholy and anxious to give her pleasure. Razumian told her
• 1:23:26
Speaker 1: how Raskolnikov had looked after the poor student and his
• 1:23:29
Speaker 1: decrepit father, and how a year ago he had been
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: burnt and injured in rescuing two little children from a fire.
• 1:23:37
Speaker 1: These two pieces of news excited Pulcheria Alexandrovna's disordered imagination
• 1:23:41
Speaker 1: almost to ecstasy. She was continually talking about them, even
• 1:23:46
Speaker 1: entering into conversation with strangers in the street. Though Dounia
• 1:23:50
Speaker 1: always accompanied her in public conveyances and shops, wherever she
• 1:23:54
Speaker 1: could capture a listener, she would begin the discourse about
• 1:23:57
Speaker 1: her son his article, how he had held help the student,
• 1:24:01
Speaker 1: how he had been burnt at the fire, and so on.
• 1:24:04
Speaker 1: Donia did not know how to restrain her. Apart from
• 1:24:07
Speaker 1: the danger of her morbid excitement, there was the risk
• 1:24:10
Speaker 1: of someone's recalling Raskolnikov's name and speaking of the recent trial.
• 1:24:15
Speaker 1: Pulcheria Alexandrovna found out the address of the mother of
• 1:24:18
Speaker 1: the two children her son had saved, and insisted on
• 1:24:21
Speaker 1: going to see her. At last, her restlessness reached an
• 1:24:25
Speaker 1: extreme point. She would sometimes begin to cry suddenly, and
• 1:24:29
Speaker 1: was often ill and feverishly delirious. One morning, she declared
• 1:24:34
Speaker 1: that by her reckoning, Rodya ought soon to be home.
• 1:24:38
Speaker 1: That she remembered when he said goodbye to her, he
• 1:24:40
Speaker 1: said that they must expect him back in nine months.
• 1:24:44
Speaker 1: She began to prepare for his coming, began to do
• 1:24:47
Speaker 1: up her room for him, to clean the furniture, to
• 1:24:50
Speaker 1: wash and put up new hangings and so on. Donia
• 1:24:53
Speaker 1: was anxious, but said nothing and helped her to arrange
• 1:24:56
Speaker 1: the room. After a fatiguing day spent in continual fancies,
• 1:25:01
Speaker 1: in joyful day dreams and tears, Pulcheria Alexandrovna was taken
• 1:25:05
Speaker 1: ill in the night, and by morning she was feverish
• 1:25:08
Speaker 1: and delirious. It was brain fever. She died within a
• 1:25:12
Speaker 1: fortnight in her delirium, she dropped words which showed that
• 1:25:16
Speaker 1: she knew a great deal more about her son's terrible
• 1:25:19
Speaker 1: fate than they had supposed. For a long time, Russkolnikov
• 1:25:24
Speaker 1: did not know of his mother's death. Though a regular
• 1:25:27
Speaker 1: correspondence had been maintained from the time he reached Siberia.
• 1:25:31
Speaker 1: It was carried on by means of Sonya, who wrote
• 1:25:34
Speaker 1: every month to the Razumians and received an answer with
• 1:25:37
Speaker 1: unfailing regularity. At first they found Sonya's letters dry and unsatisfactory,
• 1:25:43
Speaker 1: but later on they came to the conclusion that the
• 1:25:46
Speaker 1: letters could not be better, for from these letters they
• 1:25:49
Speaker 1: received a complete picture of their unfortunate brother's life. Sonya's
• 1:25:53
Speaker 1: letters were full of the most matter of fact detail,
• 1:25:56
Speaker 1: the simplest and clearest description of all russ Kolnikov surround
• 1:26:00
Speaker 1: as a convict. There was no word of her own hopes,
• 1:26:04
Speaker 1: no conjecture as to the future, no description of her feelings.
• 1:26:08
Speaker 1: Instead of any attempt to interpret his state of mind
• 1:26:11
Speaker 1: and inner life, she gave them the simple facts, that is,
• 1:26:15
Speaker 1: his own words, an exact account of his health. What
• 1:26:18
Speaker 1: he asked for at their interviews, what commission he gave her,
• 1:26:21
Speaker 1: and so on. All these facts she gave with extraordinary minuteness.
• 1:26:26
Speaker 1: The picture of their unhappy brother stood out at last
• 1:26:29
Speaker 1: with great clearness and precision. There could be no mistake,
• 1:26:33
Speaker 1: because nothing was given but facts. But Dounia and her
• 1:26:38
Speaker 1: husband could get little comfort out of the news, especially
• 1:26:41
Speaker 1: at first. Sonia wrote that he was constantly sullen and
• 1:26:46
Speaker 1: not ready to talk, that he scarcely seemed interested in
• 1:26:49
Speaker 1: the news she gave him from their letters, that he
• 1:26:51
Speaker 1: sometimes asked after his mother, and that when seeing that
• 1:26:55
Speaker 1: he had guessed the truth, she told him at last
• 1:26:57
Speaker 1: of her death. She was surprised to find that he
• 1:27:00
Speaker 1: did not seem greatly affected by it, not externally at
• 1:27:03
Speaker 1: any rate. She told him that although he seemed so
• 1:27:07
Speaker 1: wrapped up in himself, and as it were, shut himself
• 1:27:10
Speaker 1: off from everyone, he took a very direct and simple
• 1:27:14
Speaker 1: view of his new life. That he understood his position,
• 1:27:17
Speaker 1: expecting nothing better for the time, had no ill founded hopes,
• 1:27:21
Speaker 1: as is so common in his position, and scarcely seemed
• 1:27:24
Speaker 1: surprised at anything in his surroundings so unlike anything he
• 1:27:28
Speaker 1: had known before. She wrote that his health was satisfactory,
• 1:27:33
Speaker 1: He did his work without shirking or seeking to do more.
• 1:27:37
Speaker 1: He was almost indifferent about food, but except on Sundays
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: and holidays, the food was so bad that at last
• 1:27:45
Speaker 1: he had been glad to accept some money from her
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: Sonya to have his own tea every day. He begged
• 1:27:51
Speaker 1: her not to trouble about anything else, declaring that all
• 1:27:55
Speaker 1: this fuss about him only annoyed him. Sonia wrote further
• 1:27:59
Speaker 1: that in prins and he shared the same room with
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: the rest. That she had not seen the inside of
• 1:28:04
Speaker 1: their barracks, but concluded that they were crowded, miserable, and unhealthy.
• 1:28:09
Speaker 1: That he slept on a plank bed with a rug
• 1:28:11
Speaker 1: under him, and was unwilling to make any other arrangement,
• 1:28:15
Speaker 1: but that he lived so poorly and roughly, not from
• 1:28:17
Speaker 1: any plan or design, but simply from inattention and indifference.
• 1:28:23
Speaker 1: Sonia wrote simply that he had at first shown no
• 1:28:26
Speaker 1: interest in her visits, had almost been vexed with her,
• 1:28:29
Speaker 1: indeed for coming, unwilling to talk and rude to her,
• 1:28:34
Speaker 1: but that in the end these visits had become a
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: habit and almost a necessity for him, so that he
• 1:28:39
Speaker 1: was positively distressed when she was ill for some days
• 1:28:42
Speaker 1: and could not visit him. She used to see him
• 1:28:45
Speaker 1: on holidays at the prison gates or in the guardroom
• 1:28:48
Speaker 1: to which he was brought for a few minutes to
• 1:28:50
Speaker 1: see her. On working days, she would go to see
• 1:28:53
Speaker 1: him at work, either at the workshops or at the
• 1:28:56
Speaker 1: brick kilns, or at the sheds on the banks of
• 1:28:58
Speaker 1: the Irtish. About herself, Sonia wrote that she had succeeded
• 1:29:03
Speaker 1: in making some acquaintances in the town. That she did sowing,
• 1:29:07
Speaker 1: and as there was scarcely a dressmaker in the town,
• 1:29:10
Speaker 1: she was looked upon as an indispensable person in many houses.
• 1:29:14
Speaker 1: But she did not mention that the authorities were, through
• 1:29:17
Speaker 1: her interested in Raskolnikov, that his task was lightened, and
• 1:29:21
Speaker 1: so on. At last the news came. Dounia had indeed
• 1:29:25
Speaker 1: noticed signs of alarm and uneasiness in the preceding letters,
• 1:29:29
Speaker 1: that he held aloof from every one, that his fellow
• 1:29:31
Speaker 1: prisoners did not like him, that he kept silent for
• 1:29:35
Speaker 1: days at a time, and was becoming very pale. In
• 1:29:38
Speaker 1: the last letter, Sonya wrote that he had been taken
• 1:29:41
Speaker 1: very seriously ill and was in the convict ward of
• 1:29:44
Speaker 1: the hospital. Two. He was ill a long time, but
• 1:29:51
Speaker 1: it was not the horrors of prison life, not the
• 1:29:53
Speaker 1: hard labor, the bad food, the shaven head, or the
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: patched clothes that crushed him. What did he care for
• 1:30:01
Speaker 1: all those trials and hardships. He was even glad of
• 1:30:04
Speaker 1: the hard work. Physically exhausted, he could at least reckon
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: on a few hours of quiet sleep. And what was
• 1:30:11
Speaker 1: the food to him? The thin cabbage soup with beetles
• 1:30:15
Speaker 1: floating in it. In the past as a student, he
• 1:30:18
Speaker 1: had often not had even that his clothes were warm
• 1:30:22
Speaker 1: and suited to his manner of life. He did not
• 1:30:24
Speaker 1: even feel the fetters. Was he ashamed of his shaven
• 1:30:28
Speaker 1: head and parti colored coat before whom, before Sonya? Sonya
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: was afraid of him? How could he be ashamed before her?
• 1:30:37
Speaker 1: And yet he was ashamed even before Sonya, whom he
• 1:30:41
Speaker 1: tortured because of it with his contemptuous, rough manner. But
• 1:30:46
Speaker 1: it was not his shaven head and his fetters he
• 1:30:48
Speaker 1: was ashamed of. His pride had been stung to the quick.
• 1:30:52
Speaker 1: It was wounded pride that made him ill. Oh, how
• 1:30:55
Speaker 1: happy he would have been if he could have blamed himself.
• 1:30:59
Speaker 1: He could have borne everything then, even shame and disgrace.
• 1:31:03
Speaker 1: But he judged himself severely, and his exasperated conscience found
• 1:31:08
Speaker 1: no particularly terrible fault in his past, except a simple blunder,
• 1:31:12
Speaker 1: which might happen to anyone. He was ashamed just because he, Russkolnikov,
• 1:31:18
Speaker 1: had so hopelessly, stupidly come to grief through some decree
• 1:31:22
Speaker 1: of blind fate, and must humble himself and submit to
• 1:31:25
Speaker 1: the idiocy of a sentence if he were anyhow to
• 1:31:28
Speaker 1: be at peace. Vague and objectless anxiety in the present
• 1:31:33
Speaker 1: and in the future, a continual sacrifice leading to nothing.
• 1:31:37
Speaker 1: That was all that lay before him. And what comfort
• 1:31:41
Speaker 1: was it to him that at the end of eight
• 1:31:42
Speaker 1: years he would only be thirty two and able to
• 1:31:45
Speaker 1: begin a new life. What had he to live for?
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: What had he to look forward to? Why should he
• 1:31:52
Speaker 1: strive to live in order to exist? Why he had
• 1:31:57
Speaker 1: been ready a thousand times before to give up ex
• 1:32:00
Speaker 1: distance for the sake of an idea, for a hope,
• 1:32:03
Speaker 1: even for a fancy mere existence had always been too
• 1:32:06
Speaker 1: little for him. He had always wanted more. Perhaps it
• 1:32:10
Speaker 1: was just because of the strength of his desires that
• 1:32:13
Speaker 1: he had thought himself a man to whom more was
• 1:32:15
Speaker 1: permissible than to others. And if only fate would have
• 1:32:20
Speaker 1: sent him repentance, burning repentance that would have torn his
• 1:32:24
Speaker 1: heart and robbed him of sleep. That repentance, the awful
• 1:32:28
Speaker 1: agony of which brings visions of hanging or drowning. Oh,
• 1:32:33
Speaker 1: he would have been glad of it. Tears and agonies
• 1:32:36
Speaker 1: would at least have been life. But he did not
• 1:32:39
Speaker 1: repent of his crime. At least he might have found
• 1:32:43
Speaker 1: relief in raging at his stupidity, as he had raged
• 1:32:46
Speaker 1: at the grotesque blunders that had brought him to prison.
• 1:32:50
Speaker 1: But now in prison, in freedom, he thought over and
• 1:32:54
Speaker 1: criticized all his actions again, and by no means found
• 1:32:58
Speaker 1: them so blundering and so grows as they had seemed
• 1:33:01
Speaker 1: at the fatal time. In what way, he asked himself,
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: was my theory stupider than others that have swarmed and
• 1:33:09
Speaker 1: clashed from the beginning of the world. One has only
• 1:33:13
Speaker 1: to look the thing quite independently, broadly and uninfluenced by
• 1:33:17
Speaker 1: commonplace ideas, and my idea will, by no means seem
• 1:33:21
Speaker 1: so strange. Oh, skeptics and halfpenny philosophers, Why do you
• 1:33:26
Speaker 1: halt half way? Why does my action strike them as
• 1:33:31
Speaker 1: so horrible? He said? To himself, is it because it
• 1:33:34
Speaker 1: was a crime? What is meant by crime? My conscience
• 1:33:39
Speaker 1: is at rest. Of course, it was a legal crime.
• 1:33:43
Speaker 1: Of course, the letter of the law was broken and
• 1:33:46
Speaker 1: blood was shed. Well, punish me for the letter of
• 1:33:49
Speaker 1: the law, and that's enough. Of course, in that case.
• 1:33:53
Speaker 1: Many of the benefactors of mankind who snatched power for
• 1:33:56
Speaker 1: themselves instead of inheriting it ought to have been punished
• 1:33:59
Speaker 1: at their first step. But those men succeeded, and so
• 1:34:03
Speaker 1: they were right, and I didn't, and so I had
• 1:34:06
Speaker 1: no right to have taken that step. It was only
• 1:34:10
Speaker 1: in that that he recognized his criminality, only in the
• 1:34:13
Speaker 1: fact that he had been unsuccessful and had confessed it.
• 1:34:18
Speaker 1: He suffered too from the question why had he not
• 1:34:21
Speaker 1: killed himself? Why had he stood looking at the river
• 1:34:24
Speaker 1: and preferred to confess? Was the desire to live so
• 1:34:28
Speaker 1: strong and was it so hard to overcome it? Had
• 1:34:32
Speaker 1: not Svidrigailov overcome it? Although he was afraid of death
• 1:34:37
Speaker 1: In misery, he asked himself this question and could not
• 1:34:40
Speaker 1: understand that at the very time he had been standing
• 1:34:43
Speaker 1: looking into the river, he had perhaps been dimly conscious
• 1:34:46
Speaker 1: of the fundamental falsity in himself and his convictions. He
• 1:34:51
Speaker 1: didn't understand that that consciousness might be the promise of
• 1:34:54
Speaker 1: a future crisis, of a new view of life, and
• 1:34:57
Speaker 1: of his future resurrection. He preferred to attribute it to
• 1:35:01
Speaker 1: the dead weight of instinct, which he could not step
• 1:35:04
Speaker 1: over again through weakness and meanness. He looked at his
• 1:35:08
Speaker 1: fellow prisoners and was amazed to see how they all
• 1:35:11
Speaker 1: loved life and prized it. It seemed to him that
• 1:35:14
Speaker 1: they loved and value life more in prison than in freedom.
• 1:35:18
Speaker 1: What terrible agonies and privations some of them, the tramps,
• 1:35:22
Speaker 1: for instance, had endured. Could they care so much for
• 1:35:26
Speaker 1: a ray of sunshine, for the primeval forest, the cold
• 1:35:30
Speaker 1: spring hidden away in some unseen spot which the tramp
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: had marked three years before and longed to see again,
• 1:35:36
Speaker 1: as he might to see his sweetheart, dreaming of the
• 1:35:39
Speaker 1: green grass round it and the birds singing in the bush.
• 1:35:43
Speaker 1: As he went on he saw still more inexplicable examples.
• 1:35:48
Speaker 1: In prison. Of course, there was a great deal he
• 1:35:50
Speaker 1: did not see and did not want to see. He lived,
• 1:35:54
Speaker 1: as it were, with downcast eyes. It was loathsome and
• 1:35:58
Speaker 1: unbearable for him to look. But in the end there
• 1:36:01
Speaker 1: was much that surprised him, and he began, as it were, involuntarily,
• 1:36:05
Speaker 1: to notice much that he had not suspected before. What
• 1:36:09
Speaker 1: surprised him most of all was the terrible, impossible gulf
• 1:36:12
Speaker 1: that lay between him and all the rest. They seemed
• 1:36:16
Speaker 1: to be a different species, and he looked at them,
• 1:36:19
Speaker 1: and they at him with distrust and hostility. He felt
• 1:36:23
Speaker 1: and knew the reasons of his isolation, but he would
• 1:36:26
Speaker 1: never have admitted till then that those reasons were so
• 1:36:29
Speaker 1: deep and strong. There were some Polish exiles, political prisoners
• 1:36:34
Speaker 1: among them. They simply looked down upon all the rest
• 1:36:37
Speaker 1: as ignorant churls. But Ruskolnikov could not look upon them
• 1:36:42
Speaker 1: like that. He saw that these ignorant men were, in
• 1:36:45
Speaker 1: many respects far wiser than the Poles. There were some
• 1:36:49
Speaker 1: Russians who were just as contemptuous. A former officer and
• 1:36:52
Speaker 1: two seminarists Russkolnikov saw their mistakes as clearly. He was
• 1:36:58
Speaker 1: disliked and avoided by everyone. They even began to hate
• 1:37:01
Speaker 1: him at last, why he could not tell men who
• 1:37:05
Speaker 1: had been far more guilty, despised and laughed at his crime.
• 1:37:10
Speaker 1: You're a gentleman, they used to say. You shouldn't hack
• 1:37:13
Speaker 1: about with an axe. That's not a gentleman's work. The
• 1:37:18
Speaker 1: second Wigan lent his turn, came to take the sacrament
• 1:37:21
Speaker 1: with his gang. He went to church and prayed with
• 1:37:24
Speaker 1: the others. A quarrel broke out one day. He did
• 1:37:27
Speaker 1: not know how. All fell on him at once in
• 1:37:30
Speaker 1: a fury. You're an infidel. You don't believe in God,
• 1:37:34
Speaker 1: they shouted. You ought to be killed. He had never
• 1:37:38
Speaker 1: talked to them about God nor his belief, but they
• 1:37:41
Speaker 1: wanted to kill him as an infidel. He said nothing.
• 1:37:45
Speaker 1: One of the prisoners rushed at him in a perfect frenzy.
• 1:37:48
Speaker 1: Raskolnikov awaited him calmly and silently. His eyebrows did not quiver,
• 1:37:53
Speaker 1: his face did not flinch. The guard succeeded in intervening
• 1:37:58
Speaker 1: between him and his assailant, or there would have been bloodshed.
• 1:38:02
Speaker 1: There was another question he could not decide. Why were
• 1:38:06
Speaker 1: they all so fond of Sonya. She did not try
• 1:38:09
Speaker 1: to win their favor. She rarely met them. Sometimes only
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: she came to see him at work for a moment.
• 1:38:15
Speaker 1: And yet everybody knew her. They knew that she had
• 1:38:18
Speaker 1: come out to follow him, knew how and where she lived.
• 1:38:23
Speaker 1: She never gave them money, did them no particular services.
• 1:38:27
Speaker 1: Only once at Christmas she sent them all presents of
• 1:38:30
Speaker 1: pies and rolls. But by degrees closer relations sprang up
• 1:38:34
Speaker 1: between them and Sonya. She would write and post letters
• 1:38:38
Speaker 1: for them to their relations. Relations. Of the prisoners who
• 1:38:41
Speaker 1: visited the town at their instructions left with Sonya presents
• 1:38:45
Speaker 1: and money for them. Their wives and sweethearts knew her
• 1:38:49
Speaker 1: and used to visit her, And when she visited Raskolnikov
• 1:38:52
Speaker 1: at work or met a party of the prisoners on
• 1:38:54
Speaker 1: the road, they all took off their hats to her
• 1:38:58
Speaker 1: little mother. Sofya Semyonovna, you are our dear, good little mother,
• 1:39:03
Speaker 1: coarse branded criminals said to that frail little creature. She
• 1:39:07
Speaker 1: would smile and bow to them, and everyone was delighted
• 1:39:09
Speaker 1: when she smiled. They even admired her gait and turned
• 1:39:13
Speaker 1: round to watch her walking. They admired her too for
• 1:39:16
Speaker 1: being so little, and in fact did not know what
• 1:39:19
Speaker 1: to admire her most for. They even came to her
• 1:39:22
Speaker 1: for help in their illnesses. He was in the hospital
• 1:39:27
Speaker 1: from the middle of Lent till after Easter. When he
• 1:39:30
Speaker 1: was better, he remembered the dreams he had had while
• 1:39:32
Speaker 1: he was feverish and delirious. He dreamt that the whole
• 1:39:36
Speaker 1: world was condemned to a terrible, new, strange plague that
• 1:39:39
Speaker 1: had come to Europe from the depths of Asia. All
• 1:39:42
Speaker 1: were to be destroyed except a very few chosen. Some
• 1:39:46
Speaker 1: new sorts of microbes were attacking the bodies of men.
• 1:39:49
Speaker 1: But these microbes were endowed with intelligence and will. Men
• 1:39:53
Speaker 1: attacked by them became at once mad and furious. But
• 1:39:58
Speaker 1: never had men considered themselves so intellectual and so completely
• 1:40:01
Speaker 1: in possession of the truth as these sufferers. Never had
• 1:40:05
Speaker 1: they considered their decisions, their scientific conclusions, their moral convictions
• 1:40:10
Speaker 1: so infallible. Whole villages, whole towns, and peoples went mad
• 1:40:15
Speaker 1: from the infection. All were excited and did not understand
• 1:40:19
Speaker 1: one another. Each thought that he alone had the truth,
• 1:40:22
Speaker 1: and was wretched looking at the others, beat himself on
• 1:40:25
Speaker 1: the breast, wept and wrung his hands. They did not
• 1:40:29
Speaker 1: know how to judge, and could not agree what to
• 1:40:32
Speaker 1: consider evil and what good. They did not know whom
• 1:40:35
Speaker 1: to blame, whom to justify. Men killed each other in
• 1:40:39
Speaker 1: a sort of senseless spite. They gathered together in armies
• 1:40:43
Speaker 1: against one another. But even on the march, the armies
• 1:40:46
Speaker 1: would begin attacking each other. The ranks would be broken,
• 1:40:50
Speaker 1: and the soldiers would fall on each other, stabbing and cutting,
• 1:40:53
Speaker 1: biting and devouring each other. The alarm bell was ringing
• 1:40:57
Speaker 1: all day long. In the towns, men rushed together. But
• 1:41:00
Speaker 1: why they were summoned, and who was summoning them, no
• 1:41:03
Speaker 1: one knew. The most ordinary trades were abandoned because everyone
• 1:41:07
Speaker 1: proposed his own ideas, his own improvements, and they could
• 1:41:11
Speaker 1: not agree. The land, too was abandoned. Men met in groups,
• 1:41:16
Speaker 1: agreed on something, swore to keep together, but at once
• 1:41:20
Speaker 1: began on something quite different from what they had proposed.
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: They accused one another, fought and killed each other. There
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: were conflagrations and famine. All men and all things were
• 1:41:31
Speaker 1: involved in destruction. The plague spread and moved further and further.
• 1:41:36
Speaker 1: Only a few men could be saved in the whole world.
• 1:41:40
Speaker 1: They were a pure, chosen people, destined to found a
• 1:41:43
Speaker 1: new race and a new life, to renew and purify
• 1:41:46
Speaker 1: the earth. But no one had seen these men, no
• 1:41:49
Speaker 1: one had heard their words and their voices. Raskolnikov was
• 1:41:54
Speaker 1: worried that this senseless dream haunted his memory so miserably.
• 1:41:58
Speaker 1: The impression of this fetish delirium persisted so long. The
• 1:42:03
Speaker 1: second week after Easter had come there were warm, bright
• 1:42:07
Speaker 1: spring days in the prison ward. The grating windows under
• 1:42:11
Speaker 1: which the sentinel paste were opened. Sonya had only been
• 1:42:14
Speaker 1: able to visit him twice during his illness. Each time
• 1:42:17
Speaker 1: she had to obtain permission, and it was difficult, but
• 1:42:21
Speaker 1: she often used to come to the hospital yard, especially
• 1:42:24
Speaker 1: in the evening, sometimes only to stand a minute and
• 1:42:27
Speaker 1: look up at the windows of the ward. One evening,
• 1:42:30
Speaker 1: when he was almost well again, Raskolnikov fell asleep. On
• 1:42:35
Speaker 1: waking up, he chanced to go to the window and
• 1:42:37
Speaker 1: at once saw Sonya in the distance at the hospital gate.
• 1:42:41
Speaker 1: She seemed to be waiting for someone. Something stabbed him
• 1:42:44
Speaker 1: to the heart at that minute. He shuddered and moved
• 1:42:47
Speaker 1: away from the window. Next day, Sonya did not come,
• 1:42:51
Speaker 1: nor the day after. He noticed that he was expecting
• 1:42:54
Speaker 1: her uneasily. At last he was discharged. On reaching the prison,
• 1:43:00
Speaker 1: he learnt from the convicts that Sofya Semenovna was lying
• 1:43:03
Speaker 1: ill at home and was unable to go out. He
• 1:43:06
Speaker 1: was very uneasy and sent to inquire after her. He
• 1:43:10
Speaker 1: soon learned that her illness was not dangerous. Hearing that
• 1:43:13
Speaker 1: he was anxious about her, Sonya sent him a penciled
• 1:43:16
Speaker 1: note telling him that she was much better, that she
• 1:43:19
Speaker 1: had a slight cold, and that she would soon, very
• 1:43:22
Speaker 1: soon come and see him at his work. His heart
• 1:43:25
Speaker 1: throbbed painfully as he read it again. It was a warm,
• 1:43:30
Speaker 1: bright day early in the morning. At six o'clock he
• 1:43:34
Speaker 1: went off to work on the river bank, where they
• 1:43:36
Speaker 1: used to pound alabaster, and where there was a kiln
• 1:43:39
Speaker 1: for baking it in a shed. There were only three
• 1:43:42
Speaker 1: of them sent. One of the convicts went with the
• 1:43:45
Speaker 1: guard to the fortress to fetch a tool. The other
• 1:43:48
Speaker 1: began getting the wood ready and laying it in the kiln.
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: Russkolnikov came out of the shed on to the river bank,
• 1:43:54
Speaker 1: sat down on a heap of logs by the shed,
• 1:43:57
Speaker 1: and began gazing at the wide, deserted river. From the
• 1:44:00
Speaker 1: high bank, a broad landscape opened before him. The sound
• 1:44:04
Speaker 1: of singing floated faintly audible from the other bank. In
• 1:44:08
Speaker 1: the vast step. Bathed in sunshine, he could just see,
• 1:44:12
Speaker 1: like black specks, the nomad's tents. There there was freedom.
• 1:44:17
Speaker 1: There other men were living utterly unlike those here. There,
• 1:44:22
Speaker 1: time itself seemed to stand still, as though the age
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: of Abraham and his flocks had not passed. Raskolnikov sat gazing.
• 1:44:31
Speaker 1: His thoughts passed into day dreams, into contemplation. He thought
• 1:44:35
Speaker 1: of nothing but a vague restlessness excited and troubled him.
• 1:44:40
Speaker 1: Suddenly he found Sonya beside him. She had come up
• 1:44:43
Speaker 1: noiselessly and sat down at his side. It was still
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: quite early the morning, chill was still keen. She wore
• 1:44:51
Speaker 1: her poor old brunous and the green shawl. Her face
• 1:44:55
Speaker 1: still showed signs of illness. It was thinner and paler.
• 1:44:59
Speaker 1: She gave him a joyful smile of welcome, but held
• 1:45:02
Speaker 1: out her hand with her usual timidity. She was always
• 1:45:05
Speaker 1: timid of holding out her hand to him, and sometimes
• 1:45:08
Speaker 1: did not offer it at all, as though afraid he
• 1:45:11
Speaker 1: would repel it. He always took her hand, as though
• 1:45:14
Speaker 1: with repugnance, always seemed vexed to meet her, and was
• 1:45:18
Speaker 1: sometimes obstinately silent throughout her visit. Sometimes she trembled before
• 1:45:23
Speaker 1: him and went away deeply grieved. But now their hands
• 1:45:27
Speaker 1: did not part. He stole a rapid glance at her
• 1:45:30
Speaker 1: and dropped his eyes on the ground without speaking. They
• 1:45:34
Speaker 1: were alone. No one had seen them, the guard had
• 1:45:37
Speaker 1: turned away for the time. How it happened, he did
• 1:45:41
Speaker 1: not know, But all at once something seemed to seize him, and,
• 1:45:44
Speaker 1: fling him at her feet, he wept and threw his
• 1:45:47
Speaker 1: arms round her knees. For the first instant, she was
• 1:45:51
Speaker 1: terribly frightened, and she turned pale. She jumped up and
• 1:45:54
Speaker 1: looked at him, trembling. But at the same moment she understood,
• 1:45:59
Speaker 1: and a light of infinite happiness came into her eyes.
• 1:46:03
Speaker 1: She knew and had no doubt that he loved her
• 1:46:05
Speaker 1: beyond everything, and that at last the moment had come.
• 1:46:10
Speaker 1: They wanted to speak, but could not. Tears stood in
• 1:46:14
Speaker 1: their eyes. They were both pale and thin, but those sick,
• 1:46:18
Speaker 1: pale faces were bright with the dawn of a new future,
• 1:46:21
Speaker 1: of a full resurrection into a new life. There they
• 1:46:25
Speaker 1: were renewed by love. The heart of each held infinite
• 1:46:28
Speaker 1: sources of life for the heart of the other. They
• 1:46:32
Speaker 1: resolved to wait and be patient. They had another seven
• 1:46:35
Speaker 1: years to wait, and what terrible suffering and what infinite
• 1:46:39
Speaker 1: happiness before them. But he had risen again, and he
• 1:46:43
Speaker 1: knew it and felt it in all his being, while
• 1:46:46
Speaker 1: she she only lived in his life. On the evening
• 1:46:51
Speaker 1: of the same day, when the barracks were locked, Raskolnikov
• 1:46:54
Speaker 1: lay on his plank bed and thought of her. He
• 1:46:57
Speaker 1: had even fancied that day that all the convicts who
• 1:46:59
Speaker 1: had been his enemies looked at him differently. He had
• 1:47:03
Speaker 1: even entered into talk with them, and they answered him
• 1:47:05
Speaker 1: in a friendly way. He remembered that now and thought
• 1:47:09
Speaker 1: it was bound to be so. Wasn't everything now bound
• 1:47:12
Speaker 1: to be changed? He thought of her. He remembered how
• 1:47:17
Speaker 1: continually he had tormented her and wounded her heart. He
• 1:47:21
Speaker 1: remembered her pale and thin little face. But these recollections
• 1:47:25
Speaker 1: scarcely troubled him. Now he knew with what infinite love
• 1:47:29
Speaker 1: he would now repay all her sufferings. And what were
• 1:47:32
Speaker 1: all all the agonies of the past, Everything, even his crime,
• 1:47:37
Speaker 1: his sentence and imprisonment, seemed to him now in the
• 1:47:40
Speaker 1: first rush of feeling an external strange facts with which
• 1:47:44
Speaker 1: he had no concern. But he could not think for
• 1:47:48
Speaker 1: long together of anything that evening, and he could not
• 1:47:51
Speaker 1: have analyzed anything consciously. He was simply feeling life had
• 1:47:55
Speaker 1: stepped into the place of theory, and something quite different
• 1:47:58
Speaker 1: would work itself out in his mind. Under his pillow
• 1:48:03
Speaker 1: lay the New Testament. He took it up mechanically. The
• 1:48:07
Speaker 1: book belonged to Sonya. It was the one from which
• 1:48:09
Speaker 1: she had read The Raising of Lazarus to him. At first,
• 1:48:13
Speaker 1: he was afraid that she would worry him about religion,
• 1:48:16
Speaker 1: would talk about the Gospel and pester him with books.
• 1:48:20
Speaker 1: But to his great surprise, she had not once approached
• 1:48:23
Speaker 1: the subject, and had not even offered him the Testament.
• 1:48:27
Speaker 1: He had asked her for it himself not long before
• 1:48:30
Speaker 1: his illness, and she brought him the book without a word.
• 1:48:33
Speaker 1: Till now he had not opened it. He did not
• 1:48:37
Speaker 1: open it now, but one thought passed through his mind.
• 1:48:41
Speaker 1: Can her convictions not be mine? Now? Her feelings, her aspirations?
• 1:48:46
Speaker 1: At least, she too had been greatly agitated that day,
• 1:48:51
Speaker 1: and at night she was taken ill again. But she
• 1:48:54
Speaker 1: was so happy, and so unexpectedly happy, that she was
• 1:48:58
Speaker 1: almost frightened of her happiness. Seven years only seven years
• 1:49:04
Speaker 1: at the beginning of their happiness. At some moments they
• 1:49:07
Speaker 1: were both ready to look on those seven years as
• 1:49:10
Speaker 1: though they were seven days. He did not know that
• 1:49:13
Speaker 1: the new life would not be given him for nothing,
• 1:49:16
Speaker 1: that he would have to pay dearly for it, that
• 1:49:18
Speaker 1: it would cost him great striving, great suffering. But that
• 1:49:23
Speaker 1: is the beginning of a new story, the story of
• 1:49:26
Speaker 1: a gradual renewal of a man, the story of his
• 1:49:29
Speaker 1: gradual regeneration, of his passing from one world into another,
• 1:49:34
Speaker 1: of his initiation into a new, unknown life. That might
• 1:49:38
Speaker 1: be the subject of a new story. But our present

Speaker 1: story is ended. The End of Crime and Punishment by
