- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, I'm afraid. Are you with the patient now?
- 0:12Speaker 2: They are there?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Do you think shoes beyond any help?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean there's some blood from hernalt. He sumped
- 0:19Speaker 2: over yellow silu fingers, cold, their fift like hard.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Welcome to totally true crime. Today's case is going to
- 0:37Speaker 3: take us to Mersey Island in Essex, England. Carol and
- 0:44Speaker 3: Stephen Baxter were a hard working couple For decades they
- 0:50Speaker 3: had been building their own business. They sold shower mats,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and their business traded under the name cas Splash, where
- 1:00Speaker 3: shower mats were sold through popular retailers including Amazon and Etsy.
- 1:07Speaker 3: They started their business in twenty twelve, and it was
- 1:11Speaker 3: around this time that they decided to hire someone who
- 1:15Speaker 3: could help them run their website. They were in their
- 1:19Speaker 3: forties and they had a family, so growing the company
- 1:24Speaker 3: and being able to hire help was an exciting move
- 1:28Speaker 3: for them all. They hired a man called Luke de
- 1:33Speaker 3: Witt to help them, and he soon became a firm
- 1:37Speaker 3: fixture in their lives, both in work and socially. He
- 1:43Speaker 3: was twenty two and he described his relationship to them
- 1:47Speaker 3: as like a son. The Baxter's daughter Ellie saw him
- 1:52Speaker 3: like a brother too, Luke was described as weird by
- 1:57Speaker 3: the family, that he was a hard worker and he
- 2:01Speaker 3: got on well with everyone. Carol was battling a few
- 2:07Speaker 3: medical conditions, including Hashimoto's disease. It's an autoimmune reaction that
- 2:14Speaker 3: causes an underactive thyroid. Symptoms can include tiredness, weight gain,
- 2:21Speaker 3: feeling cold easily, muscle aches and cramps, dry skin, and
- 2:27Speaker 3: carpool tunnel syndrome. It can be taxing both mentally and physically,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and Carol found it difficult to live with. But Carrol
- 2:38Speaker 3: wasn't the only one suffering with poor health. Luke told
- 2:43Speaker 3: the Baxters that he had been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.
- 2:49Speaker 3: The Baxters were devastated, and they made it clear that
- 2:54Speaker 3: they would be there to help him. He told them
- 2:58Speaker 3: he was receiving treatment at Colchester Hospital and that he
- 3:03Speaker 3: would have to go for scams to check on his
- 3:06Speaker 3: cancer's progression. Luke's father passed away in twenty twenty one,
- 3:13Speaker 3: and the Baxters grew even closer to him, treating him
- 3:17Speaker 3: more like their own son. He had been working for
- 3:22Speaker 3: them for nine years, and as he lived just five
- 3:25Speaker 3: minutes away from their house, he became a frequent visitor.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But Carol's health problems didn't seem to be getting any easier,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and she and her husband made the decision to reduce
- 3:39Speaker 3: their workload within their company and started planning their early retirement.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Their shower map business had made them millionaires, and they
- 3:51Speaker 3: wanted to spend their retirement traveling and spending time with
- 3:56Speaker 3: their family and friends. Luke knew this was the plan,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and he supported it. Carol also started to look online
- 4:05Speaker 3: for help and advice for her thyroid problems, and it
- 4:09Speaker 3: was through an internet forum that she met a doctor
- 4:14Speaker 3: called Andrea Bodin. Doctor Andrea Bodin was based in Florida, America,
- 4:21Speaker 3: and would offer alternative advice on how to manage her symptoms.
- 4:27Speaker 3: She told Carol to cut down on seeing her friends
- 4:31Speaker 3: and family because when she did, her body would release
- 4:36Speaker 3: happy chemicals in her adrenal glands, which would end up
- 4:41Speaker 3: worsening her symptoms. Carol also found an online support group
- 4:47Speaker 3: for people who suffered with Hashimoto's disease, and she would
- 4:51Speaker 3: talk to the members for support and advice. Other members
- 4:56Speaker 3: of the group act up the information that she getting
- 5:00Speaker 3: from Dr Boden, saying that they had also been helped
- 5:05Speaker 3: by her. Luke would also help make health drinks made
- 5:11Speaker 3: from ingredients that Dr Boden recommended to Carol. He also
- 5:15Speaker 3: helped her with taking her medication. That Carol's health started
- 5:22Speaker 3: to get worse, she would spend a lot of time
- 5:25Speaker 3: in bed and in pain, leaving her husband and her daughter, Ellie,
- 5:30Speaker 3: feeling helpless. Ellie also had a close relationship with Luke,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and she had dreams of becoming a singer and an actress.
- 5:42Speaker 3: She had recently been in touch with a talent agent
- 5:44Speaker 3: that she'd met online, and they told her that they
- 5:49Speaker 3: could help her get work. Knowing that Luke was good
- 5:52Speaker 3: with technology, Ellie asked him to film some auditions. In
- 5:58Speaker 3: one tape, Luke recorded her singing the song I'd do
- 6:02Speaker 3: Anything from Oliver. It was a distraction from seeing her
- 6:07Speaker 3: mother's health decline, and it gave her some hope for
- 6:10Speaker 3: the future. But on Easter Sunday twenty twenty three, everything
- 6:17Speaker 3: would change. After being unable to reach her parents for
- 6:22Speaker 3: a day and a half, Ellie knocked on her parents
- 6:25Speaker 3: door to check in on them, but there was no answer.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Her partner, Marcus was with her along with their baby son.
- 6:35Speaker 3: After going round the back of the house, Ellie peered
- 6:38Speaker 3: through the window of her parents conservatory and saw both
- 6:42Speaker 3: of them in their armchairs. Neither of them were responding
- 6:47Speaker 3: to Ellie's attempts to get their attention. Ellie called Luke,
- 6:53Speaker 3: who arrived moments later, and they smashed a window to
- 6:58Speaker 3: enter the property. It is then that they discover both
- 7:02Speaker 3: Carol and Stephen Baxter are dead. Luke Paul's nine nine nine.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Him, I'm I'm the frame. They're just like, are you
- 7:14Speaker 1: with the patient?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Now? They are there?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Right?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Okay, They're like you're saying, they're just to confirm how
- 7:22Speaker 1: many people are heard? Sorry, I haven't hear you. Well,
- 7:26Speaker 1: many people require help, just to confirm sot right down
- 7:34Speaker 1: the phony, right just up there, just down the phony, please,
- 7:41Speaker 1: So I need to come outside. It's their daughter, you
- 7:44Speaker 1: can hear. Yeah, that's absolutely fun because I'm always can
- 7:46Speaker 1: help you. Now, just down the phoney. It is just
- 7:49Speaker 1: to confirm.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So, yeah, I didn't hear you inside, you can hear.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Their bills are devastated.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So to tell me exactly what's happened from what you know, please,
- 8:04Speaker 1: just so we can all go to the back hole.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Well, we've just turned up to the house and they hadn't.
- 8:08Speaker 2: We hadn't really pard anyone about a day and a half.
- 8:11Speaker 2: So we came round and they've also got here f
- 8:15Speaker 2: and I think they got round to the back pull
- 8:18Speaker 2: through their conservatory that they were sitting in their own chairs,
- 8:20Speaker 2: not moving, and we can mast the window to get in.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But yeah, they're both stiff, cold night, Kaime. Just stay
- 8:35Speaker 1: on the phone. We're going to count to you now.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Just longer to do it. Something's going to approach us.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Two separate calls of both these posts involved. Okay, so
- 8:43Speaker 1: if I had to take a call for he says
- 8:46Speaker 1: to this is a female in question, I'll yeah, she's
- 8:51Speaker 1: sixty four.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Her name is Carol.
- 8:55Speaker 1: We're going to answer you now and just stay on
- 8:57Speaker 1: the phone, thanty, thank you. So just for guys with
- 9:00Speaker 1: Carol's conditions, do you think she is beyond any help?
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there's some blood from her mouth. He
- 9:07Speaker 2: stumped over, yellow blue fingers, cold dead, stiff like hard
- 9:13Speaker 2: in any time to go rap out.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Soon I need to go to be with I will
- 9:20Speaker 1: get you know. I'm trying to be as quick as
- 9:22Speaker 1: I post you can, so just so I can make
- 9:24Speaker 1: sure we've blood helped organs. But they've done really well.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Okay, and so.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Just with regards the mouth conditions, just to confirm, do
- 9:39Speaker 1: you think he's beyond any Yeah, thank you.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And his name Stephen Baxter Brisman.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Now and since one's as okay, so how's that organ organized? Okay,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'll leave you in the first one's hand. Thank you,
- 9:55Speaker 1: Thank you both.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Luke is approached by officers on the scene.
- 10:03Speaker 5: And you say you last saw them on Friday.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Friday, I got home for eight so that's where I lived,
- 10:10Speaker 6: and me and Steve were just talking about working just
- 10:14Speaker 6: the business. Carol can't work anylaw of the last year,
- 10:16Speaker 6: she's not.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Being able to anyway. So we're just having a chat.
- 10:20Speaker 7: But he didn't really fill up to it.
- 10:21Speaker 4: And just so.
- 10:24Speaker 6: I was going to come back tomorrow and check them
- 10:26Speaker 6: on the gun in the gym, and I'm used to
- 10:28Speaker 6: check them and always pop in because they wanted this
- 10:30Speaker 6: weekend each weekend.
- 10:32Speaker 7: Just left them to so with me.
- 10:34Speaker 6: I was out with those of the last night, tookhim
- 10:35Speaker 6: for dinner Freddie's birthday and Steve's marlmy Ring l in London.
- 10:41Speaker 7: I was worried she wasn't answering her calls either, right,
- 10:44Speaker 7: which again isn't unusually.
- 10:46Speaker 6: They went time away because we were concerned. Me and
- 10:49Speaker 6: Marcus drove, okay, just to make you know, we're just worried,
- 10:56Speaker 6: but because we saw the blinds are down and the
- 10:58Speaker 6: light was on you though.
- 11:00Speaker 7: They haven't they do what they want. They've got their
- 11:02Speaker 7: weekend nights around, they're just ignoring us.
- 11:04Speaker 5: All cool, okay.
- 11:06Speaker 6: So then Eddie called me this morning and I was
- 11:09Speaker 6: always I think we're both a bit uneasy.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Yeah, as you would be understandable.
- 11:13Speaker 7: And Eddie popped by first saw the blinds were still down.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Immediately I was meeting the many ways that Mark has
- 11:22Speaker 6: called me, just giving me.
- 11:23Speaker 7: You know they're in the chairs, then we're not. We're blying.
- 11:26Speaker 7: So I literally ran from.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Home to here to contract to here, okay, and as
- 11:30Speaker 6: I got here, they just smashed the back window to get.
- 11:32Speaker 4: To get in.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Okay, fair enough.
- 11:35Speaker 5: So you lost all them alive on Friday. And have
- 11:39Speaker 5: you seen them today? Did you go in and see
- 11:42Speaker 5: them yourself?
- 11:43Speaker 6: I have been in there, yeah, And I went upstairs
- 11:45Speaker 6: and the ParaMed dost me to get all Carol's medication
- 11:47Speaker 6: that she she's got to look this is sometimes sure
- 11:50Speaker 6: had various things over the years and for various operations
- 11:53Speaker 6: had so I went upstairs and were anything that I
- 11:57Speaker 6: looked for at the tablet table organstairs and put it
- 11:59Speaker 6: in a brown box. I don't have any of its
- 12:03Speaker 6: valid but I know Carol, that's right.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Yeah, they like to know what people take because of
- 12:07Speaker 5: an idea of don't know what she's actually taken it
- 12:11Speaker 5: quite event she might take.
- 12:12Speaker 7: She has any morning, but sometimes she forgets that she
- 12:17Speaker 7: could take it. Six she doesn't know.
- 12:21Speaker 5: She doesn't know she's taking it loads of times. Yeah, okay,
- 12:24Speaker 5: all right, I think that's all we need to know
- 12:26Speaker 5: from her. We'll be in contact again, I'm sure in
- 12:28Speaker 5: the near future. But yeah, I really appreciate your time,
- 12:31Speaker 5: and we see I'm very sorry.
- 12:32Speaker 7: For what's taking.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Luke had been out the night before with Ellie, Marcus,
- 12:42Speaker 3: and their baby son to celebrate Ellie's birthday. Ellie hadn't
- 12:47Speaker 3: been able to get hold of her parents that they
- 12:50Speaker 3: had driven past their house when they went out for
- 12:53Speaker 3: dinner and they saw their lights were on and the
- 12:56Speaker 3: blinds were shut. She assumed that they just wanted to
- 13:01Speaker 3: be left alone for the weekend. Ellie said her parents
- 13:06Speaker 3: had complained to her that Luke was constantly turning up
- 13:10Speaker 3: at their home and they wanted some time away from
- 13:13Speaker 3: everyone to relax. The police checked inside the house. There
- 13:20Speaker 3: was no sign of a gas leak, no suicide notes,
- 13:24Speaker 3: and no evidence of drug taking. So how had two
- 13:29Speaker 3: people ended up dead next to each other in their
- 13:33Speaker 3: arm chairs. A post mortem was carried out on Carrel
- 13:38Speaker 3: Baxter and her cause of death was ruled as fentanyl
- 13:43Speaker 3: and promethazine toxicity with terminal broncho pneumonia. Stephen Baxter's autopsy
- 13:53Speaker 3: showed that his cause of death was cardiomegai, an alcoholic
- 13:58Speaker 3: liver disease with fentanyl intoxication. Whilst they both had other
- 14:05Speaker 3: medical conditions, it was confirmed that it was the lethal
- 14:09Speaker 3: doses of fentanyl that had killed them. Fentanyl is a
- 14:15Speaker 3: powerful synthetic opioid that is up to one hundred times
- 14:19Speaker 3: more potent than morphine. It can be prescribed in some
- 14:23Speaker 3: cases that there is an increasing problem with a legally
- 14:27Speaker 3: produced fentanyl in the UK. The police wanted to know
- 14:33Speaker 3: how both Carol and Stephen had ended up with deadly
- 14:36Speaker 3: amounts of fentanyl in their systems. The police ruled out
- 14:41Speaker 3: the possibility that they'd taken it themselves and believed the
- 14:45Speaker 3: couple had been poisoned. Investigators now had to find out
- 14:52Speaker 3: who had poisoned them. Essex Police were now treating this
- 14:58Speaker 3: as a double murder. The police was suspicious that there
- 15:02Speaker 3: may have been a financial motive linked to their murders.
- 15:07Speaker 3: The Baxters were millionaires and the police paid a lot
- 15:11Speaker 3: of attention to those who might benefit financially from their deaths,
- 15:18Speaker 3: and just two months after the couple's murder, their daughter,
- 15:22Speaker 3: Ellie Baxter, was arrested on suspicion of murder. Early one
- 15:29Speaker 3: morning in June twenty twenty three, the police arrived at
- 15:33Speaker 3: the home Ellie shared with her husband and her son.
- 15:38Speaker 3: She was six months pregnant with her second child and
- 15:42Speaker 3: still in her nightclothes when they told her that they
- 15:45Speaker 3: suspected her of killing her mother and father. She broke
- 15:51Speaker 3: down and was taken to the station to be interviewed,
- 15:55Speaker 3: but after a short time she was released without charge.
- 16:00Speaker 3: The police had got it wrong. Ellie had not been
- 16:04Speaker 3: involved in her parent's death. Their attention then turned to
- 16:09Speaker 3: the other person that the Baxters had treated like their
- 16:12Speaker 3: own child, Luke the Wit. Whilst Ellie had an alibi,
- 16:19Speaker 3: Luke did not During an extensive search of the Baxter's home,
- 16:25Speaker 3: the police found used ventanel patches. They also found a
- 16:30Speaker 3: will that stated that the couple were giving Luke the
- 16:34Speaker 3: Wit their shower map business, but the police discovered that
- 16:40Speaker 3: that will was fake. Luke was now the prime suspect
- 16:45Speaker 3: in Carol and Stephen's murders. The police searched Luke's home
- 16:51Speaker 3: and they found eighty personal electronic devices. On those devices,
- 16:58Speaker 3: they discovered that he had created twenty fake online personas,
- 17:05Speaker 3: all of which had interacted with Carol or Ellie. The
- 17:10Speaker 3: doctor in Florida who told Carol not to see her
- 17:14Speaker 3: family was Luke. All of the members of the Hashi
- 17:19Speaker 3: Moto support group were Luke. The agent who made Ellie
- 17:25Speaker 3: film singing auditions from the West End Luke. Luke had
- 17:31Speaker 3: even sent Carol a voice note pretending to be a
- 17:35Speaker 3: woman called Jenny, who Carol had met via the fake
- 17:40Speaker 3: Hashi Moto support group that he had set up himself.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Hi, garyl it's Jenny. It's Cheryl's sister.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Oh so nice to finally speak to you after all
- 17:52Speaker 6: these messages we've been doing.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Officers discovered that Luke had been plotting Carol and Stephen's
- 18:01Speaker 3: for over two years. He had been putting fentanyl into
- 18:06Speaker 3: those special health drinks that the fake doctor from Florida
- 18:11Speaker 3: had been advising Carol to take. There were videos found
- 18:16Speaker 3: on Luke's phone of Carol drinking them. The police also
- 18:21Speaker 3: found a bag of metal tax usually used to secure
- 18:27Speaker 3: things to wood, and looking back over Carol's medical records,
- 18:32Speaker 3: they discovered that Carol had been admitted to hospital with
- 18:36Speaker 3: stomach complaints and some of these tax had been found
- 18:41Speaker 3: in her stomach. Taking fentanyl and the other drugs she
- 18:47Speaker 3: was given promethazine would have made Carol experienced dementia like symptoms,
- 18:55Speaker 3: indicating that Luke was able to get her to ingest
- 18:58Speaker 3: them while she was incoherence. There were other videos on
- 19:04Speaker 3: Luke's devices which showed Carol acting strangely after being poisoned.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Luke would be laughing in the background. Luke was arrested
- 19:17Speaker 3: at work in July twenty twenty three.
- 19:22Speaker 8: Luke, the reason we're here to say, mate, is I'm
- 19:25Speaker 8: going to have to wrest your mate, al right, and
- 19:26Speaker 8: that's on suspicion of murder, all right. As part of
- 19:28Speaker 8: the police investigation, you've been identified as being a suspect
- 19:31Speaker 8: in relation to the deaths of Caroline and Stephen Baxter
- 19:33Speaker 8: twenty seventh and ninth of April twenty twenty three. Alright,
- 19:36Speaker 8: something to're not to saying, I think, but may homie
- 19:38Speaker 8: defense If you're not mentioning questions which may later a
- 19:40Speaker 8: on in court. Anything you do, say, arrance so we
- 19:42Speaker 8: can interview about the defense, enable any forensics we need
- 19:46Speaker 8: to be done, prevent any interruption, any co defendants, right,
- 19:49Speaker 8: and devent any loss of damage any evidence. All right,
- 19:52Speaker 8: So it will be taking up to chump to custody,
- 19:54Speaker 8: and then there'll be approached from there. Mate, have you
- 19:56Speaker 8: been arrested before, never been arrested?
- 19:58Speaker 1: Don't?
- 19:58Speaker 8: The process will be explained for out or obviously we're
- 20:00Speaker 8: linked information. We've got the moment, but anything further will
- 20:03Speaker 8: be explained for investigation, all right, because I've never made
- 20:05Speaker 8: it before. Obviously because of the infancy, the allegation I'm
- 20:07Speaker 8: going to put in the pad cuffs. They're going to
- 20:08Speaker 8: be in the front stack by a right, leave a
- 20:10Speaker 8: pocket the minute.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Anything that's in the pocket.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Yeah, medical conditions nowhere, no course.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yet.
- 20:23Speaker 6: Love you feel something, no nothink what.
- 20:27Speaker 8: We're on your pockets? Make what pocket that pocket there
- 20:31Speaker 8: and keys in the other pocket. Yeah, yeah, that's fine.
- 20:33Speaker 8: We're leaving with they're at the moment, or when we're
- 20:36Speaker 8: getting the car, dump hands the pockets, leave them. We'll
- 20:37Speaker 8: see out and we've got that out when we get to.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Custodyer up m.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Luke's trial started on the fourteenth of February twenty twenty four.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Essex Police said it was one of the most complex
- 20:53Speaker 3: cases they had worked on. Prosecutor Tracy Ailing said that
- 20:58Speaker 3: Luke had poisoned carry rule in the cruelest way possible.
- 21:03Speaker 3: When Luke took the stand, he told the jury that
- 21:07Speaker 3: Stephen Baxter was in on the fake online profiles and
- 21:13Speaker 3: that he had been the mastermind behind it all. He
- 21:18Speaker 3: claimed that he was just the tech guy. The jury
- 21:23Speaker 3: didn't believe Luke's version of events and dismissed his claims.
- 21:28Speaker 3: In a search of Luke's home, they found drugs, including
- 21:32Speaker 3: ventanyl patches. The jury also heard that on Good Friday
- 21:38Speaker 3: twenty twenty three, two days before the Baxters were found dead,
- 21:44Speaker 3: Luke had somehow made both Carol and Stephen ingest the
- 21:50Speaker 3: fentanyl orally, most likely disguising it in food or drink.
- 21:56Speaker 3: He then set up a camera in the conservatory where
- 22:00Speaker 3: he left them that Friday night. Over the next two days,
- 22:06Speaker 3: he watched them die via an app on his mobile phone.
- 22:11Speaker 3: The Baxter's son, Harry had to sit in court alongside
- 22:16Speaker 3: his sister Ellie and their extended family and listen to
- 22:21Speaker 3: these horrendous details. The trial took six weeks, and on
- 22:26Speaker 3: the twentieth of March twenty twenty four, Luke de Witt
- 22:31Speaker 3: was found guilty of double murder. He was sentenced to
- 22:36Speaker 3: a minimum of thirty seven years in prison. Detective Inspector
- 22:42Speaker 3: Lydia George, who led the investigation, said this outside of court.
- 22:50Speaker 9: Today, Luke de Witt has been given a life sentence
- 22:52Speaker 9: and will serve a minimum of thirty seven years in jail. However,
- 22:56Speaker 9: it is simply impossible to put a number on the
- 22:58Speaker 9: lines of Carol and Steve. They were loving, generous parents,
- 23:02Speaker 9: and the help they touched lives of many. They are
- 23:06Speaker 9: entering a period in their lives where they should have
- 23:08Speaker 9: been able to enjoy precious time with their grandchildren. They
- 23:12Speaker 9: should have been planning holidays, looking forward to spending Christmases
- 23:15Speaker 9: with family, and living their lives to the full. Luke
- 23:19Speaker 9: DeWitt took all that away in April twenty twenty three.
- 23:23Speaker 9: He tried to cover it up. He went to great
- 23:25Speaker 9: lengths to blame others who we know were not involved
- 23:28Speaker 9: in any way. He clearly enjoyed the control he exerted
- 23:32Speaker 9: over people, especially Carolin Stephen. Ultimately, the only person in
- 23:37Speaker 9: this world who knows why he did this is Luke DeWitt,
- 23:40Speaker 9: and he has proven time and time again to be
- 23:42Speaker 9: a manipulator. What we do know is the significant sentence
- 23:47Speaker 9: handed down is entirely fitting for the pathological lie that
- 23:50Speaker 9: he is. For almost a year we have been determined
- 23:53Speaker 9: to secure justice in its entirety, and today Mark's conclusion
- 23:57Speaker 9: of one of the most complex investigations taken at Essex Place,
- 24:02Speaker 9: thirty seven years in prison. It's an agnifferent time and there
- 24:04Speaker 9: will not come a point where he has spent more
- 24:06Speaker 9: than his life in jail than not today. Though it's
- 24:10Speaker 9: not about Lukedowitt, it's about Carol Stephen, and it's about
- 24:14Speaker 9: their family. We know nothing will bring Karen Stephen back.
- 24:18Speaker 9: We know nothing can give the family black their loving mother,
- 24:21Speaker 9: sister and grandmother, or their generous father, brother and grandfather. However,
- 24:28Speaker 9: I truly hope this sentence is of some comfort to
- 24:31Speaker 9: the family. Thank you.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Ellie Baxter paid tribute to her parents. She said quote,
- 24:39Speaker 3: My mum was full of life and she always pushed
- 24:43Speaker 3: me to do better. We would have girly days out
- 24:46Speaker 3: at the spa and plenty of shopping trips. She was
- 24:51Speaker 3: my best friend. We would laugh together, cry together and
- 24:56Speaker 3: support each other over the coming years. We had planned
- 25:00Speaker 3: to go traveling as we both wanted to go to
- 25:03Speaker 3: Japan and India, a dream of ours that can now
- 25:08Speaker 3: never be fulfilled. My mum loved my son to bits.
- 25:13Speaker 3: She would constantly buy him toys and take him out
- 25:16Speaker 3: for walks in his pran. My dad was a strong man.
- 25:21Speaker 3: There are no shortcuts in life, he would always say.
- 25:26Speaker 3: He worked every day of his life and provided for
- 25:29Speaker 3: my mum, my brother and I. There was nothing we
- 25:33Speaker 3: ever needed. He loved us all. In June twenty twenty four,
- 25:41Speaker 3: it was reported that the police were reviewing the deaths
- 25:45Speaker 3: of some of Lup de Witt's other relatives, including his
- 25:49Speaker 3: father and grandfather. Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby from Essex Police
- 25:57Speaker 3: said that quote, in all my life years of policing,
- 26:01Speaker 3: Luke de Witt is one of the most dangerous men
- 26:05Speaker 3: I have ever come across. I have absolutely no doubt
- 26:09Speaker 3: in my mind that had he not been caught, he
- 26:13Speaker 3: would have gone on to kill further people. Thank you
