- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes it all.
- 0:11Starts. Right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the three O take presented by a Sea Kick.
- 0:17This is episode 497. I'll be your host, Kyle Corwin,
- 0:21and I'm here with my Co host Nate Reyes.
- 0:26Nate. You passed it to me, buddy.
- 0:30Through the microphone. Through your microphone on the
- 0:33East Coast. Came through my headset.
- 0:36Came through my microphones. Nights down for the count.
- 0:40Well, not not entirely. I mean, he's here.
- 0:43I beat. I beat the fever, which is
- 0:46apparently what you got to do. Once you get past that, once you
- 0:51wake up in your sweaty, cold sheets, that's how you know
- 0:56you're past it. Except if you hear sounds coming
- 1:01out of me today, apparently it's not.
- 1:05It's not gone. So I'm still here.
- 1:07It's I'm Jordan flu game. It's no big deal.
- 1:10Just out here for what episode? What is this 490?
- 1:13Seven, baby, we're getting close.
- 1:17I can smell it. We're creeping.
- 1:20I can smell it. I got AI got a bone to pick
- 1:24here. Well, it's not even really a
- 1:26bone to pick. It's really more of just a
- 1:27question, where's this Paul Skeens card at?
- 1:33Yeah, it's a fair question. Where's the Paul Skeens?
- 1:37Card at really hasn't gotten like a ton of I've I've seen
- 1:42like a lot of fake stuff. Have you seen the fake tik toks?
- 1:47Like the fake polls? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:51I, I I. Don't.
- 1:52Why do they even make those? I don't understand it.
- 1:54It makes no sense to me. It it also it doesn't make sense
- 1:58to me. No, no, I take that back.
- 2:02It makes perfect sense to me why we don't have the Paul Skeens
- 2:05Ricky card yet. Why why that hasn't surfaced is
- 2:08because there's there's one of probably many scenarios that are
- 2:15playing out here. 1 tops hasn't even released it yet.
- 2:21That's what I would like if if you're a business.
- 2:23Still in like the factory. That's what that's what I would.
- 2:25Do Smart smart just rack up the sales, you know?
- 2:29Let these people go crazy. Let the people of Pittsburgh,
- 2:32let the people of Pennsylvania, heck, let the collectors of
- 2:34America just go crazy. Collectors, hobbyists, regular
- 2:39Joes like you and me, let them go crazy.
- 2:41Looking for this Paul Skeens card?
- 2:42Try to make a a a big buck. Hobbyists is a word.
- 2:49Someone quote me on it. What is something new every day?
- 2:51Let him, let him go crazy looking for this card.
- 2:54Meanwhile you're sitting on it in the factory in Saskatchewan.
- 2:59I don't know where Topps is. Where is Topps HQ at?
- 3:03I don't know. I think it's in Canada.
- 3:05It's in New York, Yeah, I don't know.
- 3:06I went to Saskatchewan there. So that's either happening or
- 3:11they're working to funnel it to a collector because or or a
- 3:15breaker because dude, what? What does tops have to gain from
- 3:19a guy like you or me? Getting it.
- 3:21Why do I in my head, I picture like that, you know that like
- 3:27that like fat Swedish kid that gets the the golden ticket and
- 3:32and Charlie, he's got like like stubby little chocolate fingers.
- 3:38What happens if if that like if that happens, like what if some
- 3:42snotty little kid opens, there's tears it open and they're
- 3:46stocking Christmas morning and it's just like shred to pieces
- 3:52and there's like a tear on there's like bent and they're
- 3:55like, can I take this outside and play with it?
- 3:56Like, what if it's one of those kids?
- 3:59Tops isn't going to let that happen.
- 4:00That's what I'm saying. They're going to ensure that
- 4:03this gets into the hand of a collector or a breaker so that
- 4:06they get all of the publicity. And I get it as a business, like
- 4:10do what? Do what you got to do, do what
- 4:12you got to do. But like don't, don't trick us.
- 4:15And, and I haven't bought any. I, I mean, I'm not going out and
- 4:17purchasing any of these cards. So like I'm it's not like I'm
- 4:20salty about it. I bought any, yeah.
- 4:22I'm, it's not like I'm salty about it in that sense, but I'm
- 4:25just, I'm irritated to think that like an average person like
- 4:30you or me or anybody probably listening to this who doesn't
- 4:32really collect. But maybe it was like, you know
- 4:34what? Let me go out and buy a box.
- 4:35Yeah. I'm just, I'm irritated to think
- 4:38that somebody like that never really set a chance because it's
- 4:43still floating around out there somewhere and I'm just waiting.
- 4:46I'm just waiting to to see who who gets it.
- 4:48And I'm 99% sure it's going to be a collector.
- 4:51Are we, I mean, like I'm in the camp that I, I am glad that this
- 4:55is a thing. Again, I like that.
- 4:57I'm not a collector myself. Like I'm not, I'm not into that
- 5:02as much as others, but I am, I'm like happy that it is a thing.
- 5:06I'm glad that cards are like, back out there, You know, I feel
- 5:11like it's also strangely being dominated by our generation.
- 5:16I I wish the kids would be a little more intuitive.
- 5:18But, and I mean, that's us and older, that's the problem.
- 5:22And we talked about this when COVID hit, when it when it
- 5:24started, when baseball cards started booming, like people
- 5:27were like knocking it, like just clocking each other in a Target
- 5:31parking lot over a box of cars. And they had to limit it to like
- 5:34one per a box per customer. That's right, there was a
- 5:37shortage for. A while just insanity like the
- 5:41baseball card collecting is not is not wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 5:47Dozen fanatics on tops now, yes. Oh yeah, we know what's going
- 5:52on. You're telling me there's not
- 5:53something going on? Come on.
- 5:55Come on. Fanatics is always up to some
- 5:58nonsense. Just get the.
- 6:00Get the Paul Skein's card out of circulation.
- 6:03Like just get it out in the open so we can move on with our
- 6:05lives. I just want.
- 6:06To know sitting on that puppy for sure, it's going to end up
- 6:09in like a dealer's hand or like, I don't, I don't think the odds
- 6:16are in their favor, but I do think it's going to end up in a
- 6:18pirate's hand, like a pirate's fan's hand.
- 6:22Yeah, it's going to end up in a collector's hand or or a
- 6:26breaker's hand in in the Pittsburgh area, no doubt.
- 6:29No doubt. Yeah.
- 6:31Who's not going to end up in Pittsburgh, however, Kyle
- 6:34Tucker, because he's heading to Chicago via trade.
- 6:39The newest Chicago Cub in a deal that I didn't particularly see
- 6:47coming. I, I think we, we could expect
- 6:50or we could have expected rather a trade going down for Kyle
- 6:55Tucker, knowing or presuming that the Astros were not going
- 6:59to want to hang on to him and try to try to make their pitch
- 7:03for to, to make that sort of contract happen.
- 7:09Assuming that's that's where this is headed and that's what
- 7:11he's going to get. But the Cubs, yeah, caught me by
- 7:18surprise a little bit. I, I woke up one day and I, I
- 7:21saw this, I saw this groundswell of, of attention given to the
- 7:26Cubs. And then within hours, it seemed
- 7:29like he was, he was on his way there.
- 7:32Yeah. There was, there was some rumors
- 7:36around the Yankees for a little bit and then like, I don't know,
- 7:41maybe a half a day later, it was like not a Cubs are like a super
- 7:45strong suitor. And I, you know, I mean,
- 7:49initially hearing it, I, I kind of struggled to, to see it.
- 7:56There's so much to unravel here. Just with like esock parades
- 7:59being in the, in the, in the picture.
- 8:01They're like, I, I just, I, I don't know, like I, I do like
- 8:09the deal. I don't think the Astros were
- 8:14necessarily going to fork over the money he's going to get.
- 8:17And, and I'm in the camp that it's at least 350 this offseason
- 8:23or potentially an extension with Chicago.
- 8:26It's at least 350. I, I could see north of four.
- 8:30Like the dude's he's a dog. Kyle Tucker's a dog.
- 8:35Dude Rakes doesn't miss games. Anything that he missed last
- 8:39year was fluky injury. I think he like hit by pitch or
- 8:44something like that, that like fractured his leg.
- 8:47It it makes a ton of sense in the fact that like, you know,
- 8:54hey, we're not going to get him anyway.
- 8:57I'm just, I don't know, like I, I wonder if there's other teams
- 9:01out there that are looking at this deal and they're like,
- 9:03that's all it took. You know what I mean?
- 9:07No offense to the sock for 80s, but like, and, and was it Cam
- 9:11Smith, which I believe was their number there.
- 9:13It was their first round pick. And Hayden.
- 9:17Hayden Wisnetsky. Wisnetsky is obviously obviously
- 9:20good, but yeah, I was just, I was a little surprised that
- 9:23that's all it took to get him and, and it's a full year, you
- 9:26know, and it's not, this isn't like a a deadline deal where you
- 9:30only get him for a couple months.
- 9:32Like this is a whole year and I like it that I I'm still a
- 9:40little lost on like why they're so ready to like sell certain
- 9:46pieces and then they all of a sudden do this.
- 9:49But hey, you know what I mean? Cubs got to go and that's it.
- 9:52Like when you put it together, if names stay where they are
- 9:54right now like that, that ain't a bad lineup dude.
- 10:00We're looking at Ian Hap, Kyle Tucker, Ian Hap in the outfield,
- 10:04Tucker in the outfield. Suzuki is your DH now.
- 10:09They currently have belly slider in the outfield, which is not
- 10:13not to be because you can only imagine that he is all but gone
- 10:16at this point. Dansby Swanson, Michael Bush,
- 10:19who I'm excited to see in his sophomore campaign.
- 10:24Sophomore campaign, right? Michael Bush, Nico Horner.
- 10:29Sophomore plus feel like. Matt Shaw and Miguela Maya and
- 10:34they also added Carson Kelly recently as well for a little
- 10:36step behind the dish, but that's solid.
- 10:40I don't know, man. You look at the you look at the
- 10:42rotation, you got Imanaga, Steele, Tione, Matt, Matthew
- 10:46Boyd, who just just acquired Javier Assad.
- 10:50Like and I, they're not, I would venture say they're not done.
- 10:56And and you can really say that for any of these teams that have
- 10:59been making splashes thus far, like they're there's still more
- 11:04work to be done. And it's just a matter of which
- 11:08of these teams who are active will end up with said players.
- 11:14Yeah, still more work to be done for sure.
- 11:16But I do like it. I, I hate to say it, like I, I
- 11:21definitely wanted them as a Yankees fan, Like I'd, I would
- 11:24have killed for that. I think that's as close as you
- 11:27can get to replacing Soto at this current market.
- 11:33But I mean, hey, like good for the Cubs.
- 11:36I, I think he looks better as a Cub.
- 11:39When that rumor came out, I was like, I, I can see it.
- 11:42I can really see him in that uniform, a place where I think
- 11:48Chicago is going to obviously love him right away.
- 11:51So it's easy to play in front of those fans, I think.
- 11:57Yeah, pretty interesting. I mean, I, I think on the on the
- 12:02other side of things, like I, I think this pretty much takes the
- 12:07Astros out of the Alex Bregman camp, which is which is wild in
- 12:13a way. Still trying to wrap my mind
- 12:16around that. Like I had him going back there.
- 12:19That was overall like, I just I haven't been able to picture him
- 12:23playing elsewhere. I've had a probably about a week
- 12:26to really let that sink in. Like I, I've kind of checked out
- 12:29on the whole Bregman and and Houston thing in terms of that
- 12:34being a, a likely landing spot or a return, I guess you could
- 12:39say a reunion. Ultimately, I've, I can, I've,
- 12:44I've pictured a handful of other jerseys on Bregman at this point
- 12:50and asterisks are not one of them.
- 12:52Yeah, well. And I think Esau pretties is,
- 12:56look, I mean highly touted. I, I know he struggled a lot as
- 13:01a cub. He was highly touted at the
- 13:02deadline last year. Super pole heavy my man is.
- 13:09Going to love the Crawford. Going to love those boxes dude
- 13:12going to love those boxes. I'd like to see him shed maybe a
- 13:16few L BS. He's he's he's triple C thick.
- 13:21He's I don't know if the size is accurate when you look it up.
- 13:26Well if you're saying that Esock Piratus needs to shed a few L
- 13:29BS, if his listing on Baseball reference is accurate, he's
- 13:34listed at five 11213. I'm 511 and a half, six on my,
- 13:40on my government ID and I'm probably, last I checked, well,
- 13:46I'm coming off of a sickness. So I'd probably shed a few LBS
- 13:49there probably like 2:20. So if you'd say if you're saying
- 13:52Esock parades has to shed a few LBS, you're saying that I have
- 13:54to, I have to shed a few LBS, which I already know.
- 13:56But I'm I would, I would, I would change both of those
- 14:00numbers. Give me 5/8 and then give me
- 14:03230. At least man's big Man's is big
- 14:09anyway. Knows how to hit though.
- 14:11Professional hitter. So interesting.
- 14:15Only a year removed from that thirty home run season, don't
- 14:18forget. Yeah, and we've seen him play
- 14:21first as well. So there's some flexibility
- 14:24there. 31 Sorry, there's there's just a there's a lot to to
- 14:29unravel here, lot to lot to say. But I do want to get into a
- 14:35little something because it is relevant to this.
- 14:41I think we need to talk a little bit of Cubs.
- 14:43So go ahead and press that quote button, Sir.
- 15:14Whose quote was. This ready, pal.
- 15:19Little, little early whose quote was this action?
- 15:22This is. Too relevant to to wait, you
- 15:25know, Too relevant to wait. We got to get it in.
- 15:28Let's talk about it. Lay that quote on me.
- 15:30What quote you got? I would have thrown in an
- 15:33option, certainly, but the four years for me, I would have, I
- 15:37would be comfortable doing for because it's like, you know, you
- 15:42could find worse than four years of Cody Bellinger.
- 15:45And if it doesn't pan out for the first year or two, it would
- 15:49still be a manageable enough contract to where you could
- 15:52trade it to somebody who could be well, like, you know, let's
- 15:56see if we can find the MVP Cody Bellinger.
- 15:59I'm tired of hearing MVP Cody Bellinger.
- 16:03It's well past that window. I read it in all the reports and
- 16:07I get it. He earned it.
- 16:10He's owed that to his name. I understand.
- 16:13But we're beyond MVP Cody Bellinger.
- 16:16We're not likely going to see that version of Cody Bellinger
- 16:19again. Episode and date, do you have
- 16:23that? Episode and date.
- 16:27Let's see, we've got February 26th, 2024.
- 16:37That would mark it as Episode 414.
- 16:41Oh, shoot. That was this.
- 16:42Year. Not crazy far back.
- 16:45Not crazy far back. Oh man.
- 16:50Oh, so this was, this would have been before he he joined the
- 16:54Cubs. This was This was the the
- 16:57episode that announced that he was going to the Cubs.
- 17:00This was. OK, he was going to the Cubs.
- 17:01It was super late. Obviously it was the whole Boris
- 17:04thing getting really late into the spring training, so.
- 17:08Right, right. Right.
- 17:09Exactly. Yeah.
- 17:13I mean, there was a bit in there that just ultimately gave it
- 17:15away. But this is 1000%.
- 17:18In terms of whose quote is this, That was 1000% yours truly, Kyle
- 17:24Corwin. Ding, Ding, Ding.
- 17:26Yes, Sir. That was my quote and that's
- 17:30that's a train I've been riding for some time now.
- 17:33The bit about I'm tired of hearing, oh, I agree about the
- 17:37MVP that Cody Bellinger has, like we got to stop calling him
- 17:41MVP. Cody Bellinger, is he an MVP?
- 17:43Absolutely. In the year 2024, almost soon to
- 17:48be 2025. Is it worth still labeling Cody
- 17:52Bellinger as an MVP to state a case for why he deserves this or
- 17:57that, or deserves to play on this team or that team?
- 18:01No. That was 20, 19.
- 18:09That was five years ago. Soon to be 6 years ago.
- 18:14Yeah. It's not going to get better.
- 18:17I don't see it. And, and the reason we obviously
- 18:21had to bring it up is because, like, this is interesting, you
- 18:25know, does this give leverage back to the Cubs?
- 18:29Like, does this, does this make the Cubs seem a little less
- 18:33needy to move him? Are they still, I haven't really
- 18:37heard if they're still wanting to move him, if they're still
- 18:41actively trying to do it. Obviously a lot of lot of smoke
- 18:46around the Yankees being interested in need of both the
- 18:51center fielder and a first baseman.
- 18:54We've seen Cody play left field as well, so that brings other
- 18:58teams in the conversation. John and the Chad asked, are the
- 19:01Yankees getting Bellinger? I I was in the mind of two
- 19:08different trades happening if the Yankees got Bellinger.
- 19:11One of those proposals in my head included Esock Pretties
- 19:17because the Yankees are sitting there with Jazz Chisholm saying,
- 19:19hey, you can play second, you can play third and we're just
- 19:24going to see what the market gets us and then you're going to
- 19:26play the other one. So I figured go get both.
- 19:30Cashman loves doing that. He loves getting those two for
- 19:33one trades where he can kind of semi plug a hole with a guy,
- 19:37really plug a hole with another guy.
- 19:39So now it's shifted into the other proposal that I think it's
- 19:42either, well, I think it's now if it does happen, Cody
- 19:44Bellinger and Nico Horner and having Jazz play third, Nico at
- 19:51excuse me at second. And then again, see what the
- 19:55market does by having Bellinger either in center field regularly
- 19:59or left field. If you want to, you know, let
- 20:02Jason Dominguez do it or start him at first if you don't want
- 20:05to go sign a another bat at first.
- 20:07So a lot of interesting stuff. I think this probably slows down
- 20:14a little bit. I think there's a waiting game a
- 20:16little bit because you got to wonder what teams are in on Pete
- 20:21Alonzo. What teams are in for trading
- 20:24for Paul Goldschman? What teams are in on?
- 20:33What's his face? I can see him, Christian Walker,
- 20:37Christian Walker, Christian Walker.
- 20:40And that's where I feel like Cody Millinger's maybe a Plan B
- 20:45to those options. I don't know if he is, though,
- 20:48because he has the defensive versatility, if that's what you
- 20:52want to call it. I'm no, you know what defensive
- 20:55versatility? I'm not going to, I'm, I'm not
- 20:56going to sit here and discredit him.
- 20:57He can, he can, he's shown you that he can do both.
- 21:01It's just not like I don't know. There's I don't know.
- 21:05I'm not, I'm not really into it to be honest.
- 21:08That's what I'm that's, there's something there.
- 21:10I just don't know what. I, I can't put my finger on it,
- 21:12but it's just that Cody Bellinger a a defensive
- 21:17versatility that a Cody Belanger can offer you just for some
- 21:20reason does not. Carry the bad.
- 21:23Well, not even that, but it just doesn't carry the same weight as
- 21:26the defensive versatility of, I don't know, I can't even think
- 21:32of an example right now, but it's just like I just like if
- 21:34you put Cody Bellinger up against player B, who also plays
- 21:38the outfield and first base, it's like.
- 21:41And that's where, like, when I look at that trade scenario with
- 21:44the Yankees, I I'm more excited if if they did get Nico Horner
- 21:47in that deal, I'm more excited about him.
- 21:49So I don't know. We'll see.
- 21:51I I I got a buddy who's a Braves fan and he's like, yeah, I could
- 21:55see Bellinger to the Braves playing left field every day and
- 21:58in a lineup where he doesn't have to be the dude.
- 22:01And you're like, all right, well, yeah.
- 22:03I mean, that could make sense when he's sitting, you know, 678
- 22:07somewhere down there. And you don't really have to
- 22:09rely on him offensively then. Yeah.
- 22:13But again, like, I don't know, go get Profar.
- 22:16That's in my mind. Like, if you need a left
- 22:18fielder, need an outfielder who you're going to promote defense
- 22:23and then get bonus offense, give me jerks and Profar over trading
- 22:27for a Cody Bellinger, who's likely, you know, you know, hit
- 22:31the market and have to do this all over again soon.
- 22:34I don't know, whatever. Good for the Cubs.
- 22:39You're still kind of confusing me, but at least like now you're
- 22:42starting to go with a certain direction.
- 22:44You've been spinning for a little while and now like you're
- 22:47actually going. So I appreciate it.
- 22:49I'm liking what the what the Cubs are cooking up over there
- 22:52in Chicago. I'm mark me down as as being a
- 22:55fan. Central's up for grabs, so why
- 22:58not? Always is.
- 23:00Speaking of the central the Brewers are losing their closer,
- 23:03Devin Williams. You trade with the New York
- 23:08Yankees in return the going to Milwaukee.
- 23:13You've got Nestor Cortez and Caleb Durbin as well as the ever
- 23:19famous cash considerations. Yeah, tell me what you're
- 23:25thinking here. Easy transition here.
- 23:27I was a little sad about Caleb Durbin.
- 23:29He was pretty much slaughtered to be the starting second
- 23:32baseman this year. For those who don't know, kids
- 23:36just raked little guy. He's like 5-6.
- 23:39I think he's listed at 5-6 so could be smaller.
- 23:46I think he won like the MVP of Arizona Fall League last year.
- 23:51Like doesn't strike out a ton, plays really good defense.
- 23:55So like overall kind of seems like a Brewer already and so
- 24:02does the belly of Nestor. I appreciate you.
- 24:06Thank you for your service, Nestor Cortez.
- 24:09I think it just it, it, it was all done.
- 24:13You know what I mean? That like we've kind of it's run
- 24:16its course. The last pitch he threw?
- 24:19Yeah, don't ever forget it. The last pitch he threw in a
- 24:22Yankees uniform. Was a nuke.
- 24:26Just by the way that just sold for like a a mil and 1/2.
- 24:32Yeah. I think it was it the third most
- 24:34expensive baseball that's ever been auctioned off.
- 24:37Is that what I saw? Not surprised, Not surprised
- 24:41the. Freddie Freeman walk off Grand
- 24:42Slam courtesy of Nestor Cortez just sold an auction recently
- 24:47for $1.56 million. Yeah, crazy.
- 24:54But you know, Nestor is solid tell.
- 25:00I mean, like the numbers don't necessarily write the whole
- 25:04story for last year. I I still think he reached like
- 25:06over 170 innings, 60 innings, the RA in the threes.
- 25:10Like when you look at that, you're like, yeah, not bad, but
- 25:13watching me every day and he just he didn't really have his
- 25:16stuff. He's something, you know, I hope
- 25:20the Brewers let him be what he wants to be.
- 25:22I hope he can go be weird and funky and it just, you know, do
- 25:25what he does in two up innings. I'm sure Durbin is going to
- 25:32immediately turn into infield gold the way the Brewers do
- 25:36that. But I mean, this story.
- 25:39Look, let's face it, baby, Devin Williams, I freaking love it.
- 25:45I freaking love it. What is this?
- 25:47This is another deal where you I bet other teams look around,
- 25:50they're like, that's it. That's all you wanted for him,
- 25:55huh? What does this do?
- 25:58What does this do for your back end?
- 26:00Like you're looking at, like you've got Weaver, like he
- 26:04showed you down the stretch that he's capable of taking on that
- 26:07role. Devin Williams has for years now
- 26:09has proven that he's he's more than capable of holding down
- 26:12that role. Like what it what does this look
- 26:18like? Is this look, does this look
- 26:19like a situation where you get to the end of the year, both
- 26:23guys have double digit saves Devin more more so than than
- 26:28Luke or, or what does this look like or is this is this
- 26:31strictly, is this strictly Devin in the ninth?
- 26:34I don't know, I, I don't think so.
- 26:38I, I genuinely feel like baseball's kind of moving out of
- 26:41that anyway. We, which is why, yeah.
- 26:45And we've seen, you know, closers quote UN quote closers
- 26:48being used at the toughest spot in the game.
- 26:51You know, if it's you know, if if it's bottom 7 and bases are
- 26:57loaded and you're only up one, like I'd rather use them now
- 27:00than, you know, just saving him for the 9th.
- 27:02So I do like what this does. I mean, Luke Weaver's proven
- 27:07that he can pretty much do it in any inning.
- 27:10I like that the Yankees aren't banking off of three solid
- 27:16months out of Luke Weaver and saying he's our closer.
- 27:19Good point. Like let's just roll right into
- 27:20it. And I've seen this team do, I've
- 27:22seen this organization just kind of be overly confident on
- 27:26certain guys. So I like that they've said no,
- 27:29like we're going to go get a real guy.
- 27:32And now Boone can do what he wants.
- 27:35And now Boone can press that Luke Weaver button who can be a
- 27:40closer, but he can press in the 678 vice versa, use Devin
- 27:45Williams in the in a tough spot depending on the lane and then
- 27:49have Luke Weaver to close out the game.
- 27:51And that's where a lot of their holes were was that if he did
- 27:54press that Luke Weaver button too early.
- 27:57We saw Clay Holmes really struggle coming in after that.
- 28:00They close the door. So now there's two legitimate
- 28:03guys that can close the door. And I, I, I, I'm actually really
- 28:08excited that like what this team is doing.
- 28:11Hopefully if this direction continues is being a little bit
- 28:15of self-awareness of of looking at what they did on the national
- 28:19stage and they were laughed at and and fundamentals and defense
- 28:25was laughed at and lack of pitching death depth was laughed
- 28:28at. And now just saying, hey, you
- 28:31know what, let's go do that. We'll figure out hitting.
- 28:34We always do. Let's go shore up the pen.
- 28:37Let's go shore up the rotation. See what we can do defensively.
- 28:40Still waiting for balls to drop there, but I'm I'm really
- 28:44excited what this does and the fact that it's a trade getting
- 28:49rid of Nestor's pretty much an even money swap.
- 28:52Little bit of kicker thrown in, but there's really not that
- 28:55much. So like in reality, Tanner Scott
- 28:58is still on the on the table potentially.
- 29:01Don't you? And think about it.
- 29:02So if they could do that, like stop, you know, and I'm, I'm not
- 29:07super high on it, but like Jonathan Wisego comes back and
- 29:11we've seen him have some stuff that are in the table, like if
- 29:14he can stay healthy, you know, and then there's maybe they
- 29:19bring back Tim Hill, maybe they bring back Tommy Kanely.
- 29:21I don't know, but I like what they're doing.
- 29:24They're it now it's time to go get a bat, please, like let's or
- 29:29three. But I didn't see this man.
- 29:34I I just it wasn't on my radar at all.
- 29:37Super stoked, doesn't look great without a beard.
- 29:40I'll I'll say that I'll admit it.
- 29:44He looks like a a a three-year old toddler in that picture that
- 29:47I sent you. Tell me I'm wrong.
- 29:50You're out wrong. Hold on.
- 29:52I got to pull this up. I mean, look at this.
- 29:54He looks like a high school kid that like got a Yankees hat for
- 29:57Christmas. Look at that.
- 29:59He looks like he's 11. He doesn't.
- 30:01Even look like him, didn't even recognize him.
- 30:04I mean, who is that? I like it.
- 30:08I like it. But anyway, it's a good deal.
- 30:13It's a good deal through and through.
- 30:15I called it, by the way, I told you that with the addition of
- 30:19Freed, one of those rotation arms is getting moved.
- 30:22Then by the way, going back to the Tucker thing, the Astros
- 30:26were asking for Louis heel in in exchange for Tucker.
- 30:29I don't know if it was one for one, but the Yankees just
- 30:33weren't down. In my and and to your point is
- 30:36that not one of the. Yeah, but like you just got
- 30:41done. And I'm not saying you're like
- 30:42you're you're contradicting yourself, but like you just got
- 30:45done saying that like the Yankees have a history of being
- 30:48overly confident in guys. And if I'm like, if I'm looking
- 30:51at sure, it's I'm sure it's much more difficult of a decision if
- 30:55you're in the front office in the Bronx.
- 30:58But if I'm just looking objectively as as best I can at
- 31:01the Yankee situation and I've got a, I've got a guy in Luis
- 31:04Heel who we've seen rookies go out, do what they do.
- 31:10They even win rookie of the year.
- 31:13And then they sort of just they they lose direction, they they
- 31:18lose their mechanics, they lose their confidence.
- 31:20Yeah. Is that is Elise Hill not a guy
- 31:23that you'd be willing to part ways with in exchange for Kyle
- 31:26Tucker when you just lost out on the next best option in the game
- 31:32after show. Hey.
- 31:33I mean, I do agree. Like I I would have been happy
- 31:35with the deal. I I would have been happy if it
- 31:38went down. It would have hurt a little bit
- 31:41I think, if it wasn't one year removed from getting burned by
- 31:51trading for a rental hoping that you can extend him.
- 31:55That's fair, yeah. You know, like, I think there's
- 31:58a little bit of sour taste in their mouth from Soto.
- 32:01Now, Soto's a Boris client. He's always going to hit the the
- 32:05free agency market. But like, I think the Yankees
- 32:09really thought they were going to get him back.
- 32:10I think they really thought it then the fact that they went so
- 32:13high with their numbers, so uncomfortably high with their
- 32:17numbers. I think they were pretty
- 32:18confident in it that Kyle Tucker happening right afterwards.
- 32:23It's like maybe they were a little hesitant to say, you
- 32:26know, hey, we can trade for this guy and convince him to stay and
- 32:28we have all your do it now. Not a Boris client, but I I
- 32:32don't really know what next year's class looks like.
- 32:35Chances are he's going to be the number one or top three names in
- 32:40that class that teams are going to be going after.
- 32:42So again, I would have been happy with it, but at the same
- 32:48time it would have it would have hurt to see Luis Hugo go down to
- 32:53Houston and maybe live up to the to the hype and and be as
- 32:57dominant as he can be at times. So I like that they have him.
- 33:03I like that. Like your biggest question mark
- 33:07in the mark in the rotation right now is arguably a Carlos
- 33:10Rodon who looks pretty decent last year.
- 33:16So like, that ain't bad, dude. That ain't bad.
- 33:24I don't want to talk about the Yankees anymore.
- 33:29Let's talk. Let's talk.
- 33:30Jeffrey Springs, Oakland A's. And before you say anything, for
- 33:36those of you listening, watching, what the heck these
- 33:38deals have already, it's been days now.
- 33:41Trust me, we know we can only talk to you about these things
- 33:46that have happened. We can't just make up.
- 33:48We can't make up transactions we could.
- 33:50I don't know how entertaining that would be.
- 33:52I'd love to. OK, let's make up a let's just
- 33:56make up a headline now just to satisfy those people who want,
- 34:00you know, fresh, fresh material. Breaking news The Red Sox have
- 34:10traded for Framber Valdez. Alex Bregman.
- 34:19You sign Alex Bregman your headline.
- 34:22Aren't sucks sign Alex Bregman. It's a multi faceted deal.
- 34:26OK, it's a it's a multi pronged transaction.
- 34:30They they've traded for Framber Valdez.
- 34:33They've essentially emptied the the Houston Astros.
- 34:36That's your breaking news. Gotcha.
- 34:40There's your, there's your headline if you want fresh
- 34:42material, even if it's inaccurate.
- 34:46Completely fake. We're all we can only talk about
- 34:50what's happened and what's happened is Jeffrey Springs to
- 34:53the A's. It I got to admit the, the
- 34:58Oakland A's offseason that has occurred thus far to to date, it
- 35:05was a little bit of a false alarm.
- 35:06Once you start, once you start putting the pieces together and,
- 35:10and you know, there's these reports that have been floating
- 35:12around talking about how the A's are only making these deals,
- 35:15only making these acquisitions to avoid having a, a grievance
- 35:20filed against them. You start understanding like,
- 35:22OK, maybe this isn't as much of A gung ho effort as maybe we
- 35:29initially thought before we were, before this was brought to
- 35:32light, before we were reminded of this reality that they're up
- 35:35against. It kind of takes the, it takes
- 35:39the, the, the punch out of it a little bit, 'cause I'm going,
- 35:43you know, like, I like this, I like this, this trade.
- 35:47Jeffrey Springs, former former former Boston Red Sox, former
- 35:53Ray. I like the I like this trade for
- 35:56the A's. But then it's like we're just
- 35:59trying to, we're just trying to reach a threshold so people
- 36:01won't be mad at us because we already have enough people that
- 36:04are mad at us as it stands. Sorry, I forgot that he made 25
- 36:17starts in 2022. Yeah.
- 36:21And miss, what was it all of last year, right, that he
- 36:23missed? He made seven starts last year.
- 36:27Seven starts. Mcclanahan missed all of last
- 36:30year. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:32That's what it. Was having 3 three starts in
- 36:352023. They really got hammered.
- 36:37Rays were down for the count last year it.
- 36:39Was tough. I like this.
- 36:42I think this is kind of like a buy low situation and I don't,
- 36:47it sucks 'cause it's like, I don't, I, I hate saying the same
- 36:51thing over and over again, but like every deal that the A's do,
- 36:56it's like good deal. If he does well, you can flip
- 37:04him at the deadline. You know, I, I don't know, I get
- 37:10that they're trying and I appreciate that they're in the
- 37:12headlines and I, I can, I can give them some credit around
- 37:18that. I know this is going to be
- 37:21extremely overly optimistic and if there's any A's fans out
- 37:25there that are listening, you're you're going to hate what I'm
- 37:28about to say. But to your point, it's like
- 37:32what the A's do over and over. They make a deal, they get they
- 37:36bring somebody in. And then when the soonest things
- 37:38don't go well, the second you get, you reach that window of of
- 37:42starting to flip guys at the deadline gone.
- 37:45Yep, I know the A's have gone through a tumultuous chapter and
- 37:52are are still are still going through said chapter and we'll
- 37:58be going through said chapter for the next few years because
- 38:01this, as we know, like this isn't going to be their final
- 38:04home. This isn't going to be their
- 38:05final stop. But this is like a new chapter
- 38:10within that chapter. The whole move to Sacramento,
- 38:14the eventual hopeful for their say or according to them hopeful
- 38:19move to to Vegas eventually. Whether or not that happens, who
- 38:23knows, but I just I think it's happening.
- 38:30Probably, probably, who knows? I mean, I but it.
- 38:32I think I saw that there's like a there's like a spot in Vegas.
- 38:35It's been like leveled. Out.
- 38:36Yeah, yeah. But you just never until until
- 38:41the first pitch is thrown, you just, you just don't know.
- 38:45That's when you that's when you fully accept it.
- 38:47But once that first pitch finally thrown.
- 38:51I mean, it's like at the wedding, man, like or forever
- 38:54hold your peace. Like if somebody has a a
- 38:56grievance to to file against them the morning of opening day
- 39:00and maybe they could put a halt to this whole Vegas thing, who
- 39:03knows? Wait, I love you athletics.
- 39:10No, sorry, what? This is a very long winded way
- 39:13of saying I, I feel like I have to look at them through a
- 39:17different set of lenses right now just because they're in this
- 39:21weird situation is the simplest way I can put it.
- 39:28So like we, at least for me, I can't look at them through the
- 39:31Oakland A's lenses right now. I have to look at them as a team
- 39:35that is currently in the mix or in the process of evolving,
- 39:39relocating, being forced to add names to avoid grievances.
- 39:43So I'm just going to have to look at it.
- 39:46I'm going to have to take these moves at face value.
- 39:48And at face value, I like Luis Severino being added that
- 39:51rotation, and I like Jeffrey Springs being added to the mix
- 39:54as well. Yeah, that's all I can really
- 39:57say. I, I can't, I can't just assume
- 39:59what's going to happen at the deadline for the A's because we.
- 40:02The it's just a different situation right now and and
- 40:05maybe they may be led to, to handle the deadline a different
- 40:09way. They may be adopted in the
- 40:11process of adopting a different philosophy with, with the talent
- 40:15that they're bringing in. I don't know.
- 40:16I don't know. Will this, will I, will this
- 40:19ultimately come back to bite me? Probably.
- 40:21But I'm just going to try to be as pseudo optimistic as I can.
- 40:26I like it, good for you. Speaking of the A's.
- 40:33Yeah, I got none. Speaking of the A's, the
- 40:38Phillies came knocking at the came knocking at the door, they
- 40:44said. Will you guys take Alec Bohm?
- 40:49I don't understand. The the Alec Bohm thing.
- 40:53This is really odd. Just fell off a Cliff like any
- 40:57momentum that that had, which I'd I'd really have a hard time
- 41:01wondering how like just how little to no momentum it had it.
- 41:10If you're knocking on the door of the Sacramento A's, the
- 41:16athletics, what is it? What are we, what are the, what
- 41:19are we saying there? And they said the age, like, all
- 41:24right, what are you looking for on return?
- 41:27They said, how about Brett Miller?
- 41:32No, they said. Bobby Miller.
- 41:34No way this is real. They said Bobby Miller,
- 41:37according to The Athletic. The Phillies asked Bobby Miller.
- 41:45I'm so sorry. You know what I meant, Mason
- 41:47Miller, the Phillies said. I know what you meant, I
- 41:50honestly breeze right by it. Thank.
- 41:51You Mason Miller, it's late. The Phillies asked for All Star
- 41:55reliever Mason Miller. Period.
- 41:58That ended the conversation, an A source said.
- 42:02So like it was this. Stupid.
- 42:03What are we, what are we trying to do Philly?
- 42:06Like, I'm seeing a lot of, I'm seeing a lot of outraged
- 42:09Phillies fans right now with like, kicking around the whole
- 42:12meme of the guy being like, come on, do something, sort of poke
- 42:15in the Dave Dombrowski head on the ground.
- 42:21This is I mean. This goes back to what I was
- 42:23saying, man. I'm giving the Phillies one more
- 42:26year I'm out and that includes this offseason.
- 42:29Like I'm giving you this offseason and I'm giving you
- 42:31this next year to see to like make go with this thing.
- 42:35But you're running it, believe it or not.
- 42:38You're not going to want to hear this, Phillies fans, but you're
- 42:40running out of time. These guys that you love so
- 42:45much, they're not getting any younger.
- 42:47None of these guys are. Yeah, but that's The thing is
- 42:51that like this, this is the hole you get yourself in, is this
- 42:59isn't the model that Dombrowski wanted to have.
- 43:03This isn't the template. They're already supposed to have
- 43:06a ring or two by this point, and then they wouldn't be so
- 43:09desperate when it comes to an offseason.
- 43:12But now you're at this point where you have a roster that's
- 43:15aged, you got a ton of money tied up, you don't have a farm,
- 43:22so you don't have the ability to go sign anybody and get this
- 43:26team over the hump. And you can't you can't really
- 43:30trade anybody. So now you're looking at having
- 43:32to trade one of your core members are right away.
- 43:34It's it's not something that they want.
- 43:39This worst case scenario for the Phillies, this is the last place
- 43:44they would want to be is at this point in Harper's career with
- 43:48the rest of their roster looking on, saying we have nothing to
- 43:51show for it. They needed a ring and now the
- 43:57rest of the league is like what leverage do you have?
- 44:00Good luck. We'll get Boehm at the deadline,
- 44:05when half your rosters aged and the Braves are awake this year
- 44:11and the Nationals are coming and the Mets are coming like I'm I'm
- 44:16done with the Phillies. I'm out.
- 44:20I can't go that far. The rest of the division is on
- 44:23the rise. Yeah, the Braves are healthy.
- 44:26Braves will be back. The Mets are, as we very well
- 44:30documented the last month, the Mets are the Mets now a new, a
- 44:36new era for that franchise. It's looking like, yeah, the
- 44:44Phillies really missed the boat. I, I feel like, and that's why I
- 44:47said I, I, I, I can't say that I'm fully out because I, I still
- 44:51think that they have, like you, you have enough pieces in that
- 44:54clubhouse, but you got to add to it.
- 44:59And they can't. But you can't.
- 45:02And the thing that sucks about this whole bone thing, like
- 45:04initially when they when these talks started servicing, because
- 45:07remember when you and I brought this up the first time a a
- 45:09handful of weeks ago were like, why?
- 45:14Like, where's he even going to go?
- 45:16But the longer that this draw that this plays out, you're
- 45:21going, what are we doing to this kid's confidence?
- 45:23Like it, it he you out? Like if even following Alex
- 45:26Baum, you know the story there. You know, his relationship with
- 45:29that city, with his fans. It's it's been it's had its ups
- 45:32and downs, but he started off the 2024 season as one of the
- 45:36best hitters in baseball. Granted, it it sort of plateaued
- 45:39a little bit, but the confidence was there on that.
- 45:43And then you immediately just hit the offseason, you know,
- 45:49wheels to the ground just looking for anybody and
- 45:53everybody that has even the the slightest bit of interest.
- 46:00And the lot, like I said, the longer this draws out, you have
- 46:03to think that they that that boom's gone for.
- 46:07What I know and you saw like the the Rob Thompson quotes during
- 46:11winter meetings said he's like, you know, I went up to him and I
- 46:14told him he's our guy. He's doing well, he's training,
- 46:17he's feeling. Good.
- 46:18That's the other thing there. You we're hearing out of the out
- 46:20of the out of the out of the out of the organization.
- 46:25Like we're not shopping him. It's like, no, you haven't found
- 46:27anybody to shop him too. Yeah, like don't play it.
- 46:30Don't. Let's not.
- 46:31Walk this back shopping. You are shopping, you just
- 46:34haven't finalized the purchase. Yet exactly let's not walk this
- 46:39back to try to protect his feelings like what's done is
- 46:41done. You you wanted him out of there.
- 46:43It was very clear you like you wanted to either.
- 46:45I don't know. I don't know what they want.
- 46:47What was the end game there to go get Bregman?
- 46:48I don't know. Is that is that why they're is
- 46:52that why they're pulling at the last, the last straw of of the
- 46:56of the A's to see if they could strike a deal to clear up space
- 46:59to then pivot to Bregman like I, I.
- 47:01Guess. I mean, it's not like it's not
- 47:03like Boom is going to clear up that much space.
- 47:08Doesn't make sense. They have no leverage, they have
- 47:11nowhere to go This. Is very unlike Dave Dombrowski.
- 47:15That's this is what I'm saying, is that like everything's fine
- 47:18if you have a ring or at least one or two, but if you don't
- 47:23have that, you reek of desperation and you're now
- 47:27operating with one hand tied on your back.
- 47:33The shame, it's real shame. It's too bad.
- 47:37My body's like freaking out right now.
- 47:39I got hiccups, coughs. I think it's because I'm holding
- 47:42coughs in. That's the worst.
- 47:46That's the worst for 30 minutes. You know what else is?
- 47:49I'm not here fighting for these people, man.
- 47:52You and I both, man. I'm like I said, I seems like I
- 47:55gave it. I gave it to you.
- 47:57We've been. We've been hey, we've been
- 48:00posting, though. No, no calling in sick for us.
- 48:03That's right. No.
- 48:05But you know what? What else is the worst is having
- 48:08to wear this shirt. And I wanted to just point it
- 48:11out that this is now the third. Is it?
- 48:15Is it four? I think three.
- 48:17I think it's three. Yeah.
- 48:20I think it's the third time we're in this.
- 48:21If if you're new to the show, welcome.
- 48:24Lost a bet as a refresher. Lost a bet back I guess
- 48:30September it was made official Yankees Red Sox wrapped up the
- 48:35the series didn't go didn't go the way I wanted it to.
- 48:38So had to get this shirt. It's, as you can see, a little
- 48:41Sports Illustrated cover I Photoshopped I.
- 48:43Can't stop looking at it. It's.
- 48:45You got 3 versions of Nate on there with the shortstop of the
- 48:4890s, I think. I think Nomar's covered in there
- 48:52somehow, but you got a Rod Jeter just a as you see there in the
- 48:57fine print. How to lose a bet page page 42.
- 49:00I love it. I got to wear this 10 times
- 49:03before opening day. I'll be honest with you, I feel
- 49:07like I've worn this shirt 7 or 8 times and I've only worn it 3,
- 49:10so I may have to propose some sort of buy out or something.
- 49:14To me, I'd have to make it enticing because I just don't.
- 49:19I don't think I can wear this seven more times before.
- 49:22Opening it but I want to wear it.
- 49:26If you want to wear it, I'll gladly send it to you.
- 49:28I will gladly send it to. You.
- 49:29Is that weird? I feel like Paige would wear it.
- 49:32I'll give it. I'll glad I will.
- 49:35I will have this thing shipped out tomorrow.
- 49:37If, if Paige wants it. I I don't need this anymore.
- 49:39I've I've, I haven't paid my dues, but I've paid my.
- 49:43Dues. Not yet, Sir.
