- 0:02I'm Miller Cotton, welcome back our number 2.
- 0:05We'll take you until 2 at that time and turn things over off
- 0:08the bench. Sean and Lucas 2 until 5.
- 0:11Scott document at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:13Mr. Monday night was it with his pick point spreads 1011
- 0:18somewhere in that vicinity. Mr. Monday Night Circus Sports
- 0:22sponsors him. Let's get to our buddy Bama Bob
- 0:24as we recap the week weekend in college football.
- 0:27Another week comes and gone. Double digit Week 10.
- 0:30Yes, week 10 is about will. We will embark Bama when we
- 0:34reconvene on Friday, so we it's flying by.
- 0:38Yeah, it's flying, isn't it? It's just crazy.
- 0:40It always is. So Brian Kelly is out.
- 0:43He's I think one of eight now Power 4 conferences that there's
- 0:47a school looking for a new head coach.
- 0:50We'll see where he lands or if he lands, but another golden
- 0:53parachute for a head coach that didn't get it done at his
- 0:56particular school? Yeah, and I guess I knew this,
- 1:01but it's just been brought to light obviously with Kelly's
- 1:05firing. Is that Scott Woodward, who's
- 1:08the AD at LSU has, you know, is skeletal for both the the Jimbo
- 1:14Fisher buyout because he hired him at A&M and then he left for
- 1:18LSU and now he's responsible for the Kelly buyout, which are the
- 1:21two largest in NCAA history. And I found it interesting.
- 1:27It says they're still negotiating the buyout.
- 1:29What's to negotiate? I'm.
- 1:31Kelly I'm like, no, I think the line is $54,000,000.
- 1:34That's the negotiate, the starting point.
- 1:36Well, I think a part of it is Bama that will give you a lump
- 1:39sum instead of paying out the whole thing over 54.
- 1:43That's a lot of times the way that those play out.
- 1:45Plus whatever the language is, if he takes another job, what
- 1:48that is so. Yeah, there was an offset, I
- 1:52guess in this one. Fisher had no offset.
- 1:54So basically he got his $76 million regardless.
- 1:58But it could very well be that they're trying to say, how about
- 2:01you take 35 now and waive the rest of it and that way go find
- 2:04you another job. It's it's, I mean, it's a nice
- 2:08problem to have, you know, for, for failing.
- 2:11But that that hire was just so it was so odd from the start.
- 2:15I think we talked about it, you know, three or four years ago.
- 2:18It just seemed like an odd fit. He never fit into the culture
- 2:22down there. I saw somebody last night say he
- 2:24never understood what the hell stood for in LSU.
- 2:27And that is, I mean, this is just a different thing down
- 2:29there. And he never fit in.
- 2:31He tried to fake it and they just never bought it.
- 2:35And so, yeah, he'll be looking for work and I'll be, I'll be
- 2:38interested to see where he lands.
- 2:40Maybe it's just a culture thing, but you could just tell that
- 2:44that side. I mean, he's just got to be
- 2:46miserable to work for, doesn't he always.
- 2:49It just looks insufferable and constantly.
- 2:54And so that has just got to as an Alabama fan, I'm like, great,
- 2:58because now they're going to play loose and free when they
- 3:00come to Tuscaloosa in two weeks and they're out familiar that.
- 3:02But we'll get to that in a couple weeks.
- 3:04But yeah, just just a miserable tenure down there is finally,
- 3:08mercifully over, and we'll see where they go from here.
- 3:11They're going to call Lane Kiffin, I bet, like everybody
- 3:12else. Let's get to the Big 12 Trent
- 3:15recap it. The bad news, Texas Tech, their
- 3:17backup quarterback, Will Hammond, who's really good, I
- 3:20think he's now out for the year. Torres ACL.
- 3:22We'll see if Morton's ready to go back in the next time the
- 3:26Texas Tech takes the field. Your thoughts, Takeaways from
- 3:29the Big 12, Trent. I'm just excited for that
- 3:31Houston Cincinnati Big 12 championship game.
- 3:34Do you think I wouldn't be surprised?
- 3:36It's Planko and that's all this Football Conference is this
- 3:40Blinko put it in there. Nobody has any control and we'll
- 3:43just see what. But there is no way to decipher
- 3:45what this thing is going to do. BYU found a way.
- 3:48Again, long portions, they did not look like the right side in
- 3:52that football game. It just, that's what you're
- 3:54going to get out of this conference.
- 3:55And I, I've said for years, I, I, we're treading towards a year
- 3:59where we're going to have that six way tie at six and three.
- 4:02I don't know if it's going to be this year, but maybe for 2nd
- 4:04place that's what we might get. We might, I mean Utah.
- 4:07How does Colorado beat Iowa State and then just look awful
- 4:11against Utah? They were down 43, nothing after
- 4:1330 minutes. K State looks as though maybe
- 4:16they're back into this thing or trending in the right direction.
- 4:19Texas Tech mentioned them. Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Houston.
- 4:24Really. In the Big 12 Championship game.
- 4:25Probably not good for business. Oh my God, that.
- 4:27'D be awful, Bammy. Your thoughts on the Big 12?
- 4:31Yeah, it's just a mess, I guess, with Kenny.
- 4:33You, you and I both said Friday, hey, if BYU wins, we'll be
- 4:36believers. Yep, Yep.
- 4:37Here we go. I guess we got.
- 4:39Barebock Meyer was really good. I'll believe, you know,
- 4:43believing is one thing, being sold is another.
- 4:45I mean, they still have. They've got to go to tech.
- 4:48They got a bye week. They go to Lubbock and they go
- 4:51to Cincinnati. So they've still got two really
- 4:53tough Rd. games. I mean, how about that you want
- 4:56to talk about? I'll just give you a doomsday
- 4:59scenario for the conference, right?
- 5:01BYU goes to Cincinnati the next to last week of the season.
- 5:05If those two teams, if we get a repeat of that, whatever that is
- 5:08in the in the Big 12 championship game, that's going
- 5:11to be a nightmare for the conference.
- 5:12I think BYU still has a chance to drop a couple of games as to
- 5:16Cincinnati, but somebody's going to have to beat them and so far
- 5:19nobody's been able to do it. It's I don't it's confounding,
- 5:24but it is what it is. I think Arizona State is
- 5:27probably finished Houston still in the mix.
- 5:30Man there they are right four and one seven and one ranked
- 5:3322nd Utah. I mean, then you got all the
- 5:37three and twos and that's that's I think where you're talking
- 5:39about. You could possibly have a lot of
- 5:41chaos getting into if who's who's the two loss team that
- 5:45gets into the championship game. But listen, it's I, I called it
- 5:49a beautiful mess on Friday. And it is because you just every
- 5:52week there's just meaningful games.
- 5:54Now you can talk about, well, I wish it was these two better
- 5:57teams, but you know, we're nine weeks in right now and and here
- 6:00we are. And this is kind of what?
- 6:02They are what they are. They are what they are and, and
- 6:06here we go. But I think Houston is, I think
- 6:09Houston is going to have something to say about that
- 6:12before it's all said and done. But it's it's impossible to
- 6:15pick. It really is.
- 6:16So on Twitter I saw something that have you seen the 6/7?
- 6:20Trend I I I live it every day I. Have.
- 6:22I have no idea what it meant. Yeah.
- 6:24I don't understand either please.
- 6:26Explain. It means so, so I think that's
- 6:28how I took it. That's what head is morphed
- 6:31into. It started as nothing.
- 6:32Don't read into it. It will drive you crazy.
- 6:35And my son 6-7 shut up I. Think it means so.
- 6:39So. And I think that's where the Big
- 6:4012 and the 6-7, it started with nothing and now it's morphed
- 6:44into that. Yeah.
- 6:45Please don't go down that road. Well, I deal with it enough at
- 6:47home. I was.
- 6:48I couldn't help myself. But what are these guys talking
- 6:51about? I didn't want to say it on the
- 6:52air and then be a racist. Oh, yeah, Yeah.
- 6:55Or. Or, you know, something you
- 6:56shouldn't say. Anyways, there are 6-7, the Big
- 7:0012, Bama, the Big 10's not. Let's start with Trent, though,
- 7:03first of all, my Huskers, yeah. I mean, when you get away with
- 7:08past interference, you can you can escape at.
- 7:10Home against awful non call was so bad oh.
- 7:13My God, hair on fire. Oh my God.
- 7:15They're not a good football team.
- 7:16They're not. They're not a good football
- 7:17team. You know who might be who?
- 7:19The Washington Huskies. Yeah, yeah, They went in, you
- 7:23know, even in that game, that was a bad trip going out to
- 7:24Michigan. They were right there.
- 7:26They just couldn't get that offense going.
- 7:27I. Like Williams a lot, they're QB.
- 7:29You're looking for a 10 and two team and I know in this state
- 7:31we're talking about a 10 and two team to get in the play offs and
- 7:34if Iowa does win out, they will be in.
- 7:36Same thing with Washington at Wisconsin, home for Purdue at
- 7:41UCLA and then Oregon at home to wrap it up and we know how big
- 7:44rivalry that is. The Huskies at 10 and two are in
- 7:48that. Husky Stadium.
- 7:49Wow, that would be a massive game.
- 7:52Anything else from the Big 10? The Michigan Michigan State
- 7:54game. Well, of course you get the
- 7:56cover there with 7 seconds left as once again they backed.
- 7:59Of course, Aidan Childs gets benched because that's what
- 8:02happens seemingly every game, and Alicio Milazovic comes in
- 8:06and tosses A touchdown with 7 seconds for the cover play.
- 8:11Indiana is really good I guess, right?
- 8:14I mean, Bammy, your thoughts on the Big 10?
- 8:18Yeah, look, Indiana, I, I would put Indiana and Texas A&M.
- 8:23You can, you know, flip a coin on.
- 8:25I'm not sure on any. Better I'm boy, I tell you.
- 8:29The more I look at him, the more I am.
- 8:30To do that, I love Reed. I love Reed.
- 8:33He still plays out there, too. They got a defence too now.
- 8:37They haven't played Georgia. They haven't played Alabama.
- 8:40What's their best win at Notre Dame by far right or at LSU?
- 8:45Here's their here's their They beat UT, San Antonio, They beat
- 8:49Utah State. Both of these teams in the
- 8:50middle of their conferences. Their SEC scalps are Auburn,
- 8:53Mississippi State, Florida, Arkansas and LSU.
- 8:56What they've got left at Missouri, South Carolina and
- 8:59that, well, Sanford only can bring that up.
- 9:02And then at Texas on the Black Friday Eve got How good is that
- 9:05going to be? Yeah, yeah, they're going to be
- 9:07in the SEC championship game, but on on the Big 10.
- 9:10I mean, God, Indy, listen, Indiana's a just pencil in for
- 9:14Indianapolis, right? I mean, they're they're you just
- 9:16look at what's left there. There's no way anybody's
- 9:19different up. You know, you mentioned
- 9:21Washington might be the best. Obviously Senator, you're the
- 9:25Iowa Hawkeyes are going to have just a ton to say about this.
- 9:28I'm just looking at this three-game stretch, right?
- 9:30And starting in November 8th, you've got Oregon and Iowa.
- 9:33You've got Iowa then at USC the next week and then you've got
- 9:36UCA. I'm sorry, USC at Oregon the
- 9:39week after and then you just mentioned you've got Washington
- 9:42and Oregon after that. I mean, Oregon could be out of
- 9:45this. I mean, or Iowa could easily
- 9:47toss aside Iowa and USC could both toss aside Oregon.
- 9:52One of these teams is going to, here's what you want.
- 9:55If you're the Big 10, right, you want one of these teams, they
- 10:00would probably prefer, you know, either I or USC just to kind of,
- 10:05you know, be a solid two loss team, not a three loss team.
- 10:09And then with a two loss organ, it's, it's just a, it's a, it's
- 10:13another mess that is they are desperately trying to find out
- 10:17who, who's the 4th team we can get in because you look at what
- 10:20happened in the SEC with Ole Miss this weekend.
- 10:22I mean, the SEC is going to have a solid 4 and the Big 10 doesn't
- 10:28want 5, so they're desperately trying to get one of those.
- 10:31And Michigan still has a chance because they got to go to, but
- 10:34they have to go to. Ohio State, yeah.
- 10:36USC a couple of tough trips. I mean, you know, they get Iowa
- 10:40at home and they get go to Oregon.
- 10:43UCLA, Illinois, yeah, UCLA, Illinois is done.
- 10:46You mentioned Washington, Washington might have the
- 10:48clearest path right there. I mean, and and nothing on that
- 10:53sounds sounds daunting, but yeah, it was it was I think the
- 10:57real winner this weekend was Washington.
- 10:58You got to throw Iowa in there too, because they just
- 11:00absolutely, you know, bludgeoned Minnesota in that game 41 to 3.
- 11:05And that's the kind of score guys that if you're not paying
- 11:08attention to Iowa football like you guys do, you know, day in,
- 11:12day out, week in, week out, that's the kind of score you
- 11:14look at and go, OK, yeah, you know, it wasn't one of these 16
- 11:17to 12, let's squeak by. You know, that was a that was
- 11:20just a that was a bludgeoning. And that's what you really need
- 11:23if you really you need results like that if you want to try to
- 11:27get in as a tending to at large team in the Big 10.
- 11:30So I think they were a winner. Washington was a winner.
- 11:33Indiana kind of did what they were supposed to do.
- 11:35Nebraska this week by Michigan, you know, the back door cover as
- 11:39you mentioned. But solid week for the Big 10.
- 11:42Nothing really flashy didn't hurt themselves at all, let's
- 11:45put it that way. Yeah, Iowa, big winner.
- 11:46Washington, I'm with you. All right, let's go to the SEC.
- 11:50Your takeaways there. This is going to be more
- 11:52bothersome here with Iowa off this week.
- 11:55But why is Oklahoma and Missouri and Texas?
- 11:58Why are these teams ranked in Iowa?
- 12:00Can't sniff a ranking? What about any of those three
- 12:02times this? Got lucky.
- 12:04I'm sorry they got lucky. You're.
- 12:05Down 17 in that game and should have been salted away a couple
- 12:08of different times in that one. Oklahoma, I mean, they're a
- 12:11different team without material. This is not a top 25 team.
- 12:14No way. Missouri What have they done?
- 12:16And a lot of games at home, yeah.
- 12:18It just it's the SEC and we know the manufacturing that happens
- 12:21over there. But that aside to the actual
- 12:23games on the field, Ole Miss and did it with a couple of
- 12:29defensive plays, not a ton, but did a couple.
- 12:32Now the question becomes with Lane, because that's impressive.
- 12:35Yeah, going on the road and winning that game back-to-back
- 12:37Rd. games. We talked about that angle on
- 12:39Friday. Now don't screw it up, Lane.
- 12:43Don't lose to South Carolina, don't lose to Florida.
- 12:46You just. You can't.
- 12:47Where's the where is the game in Oxford or do they have as the
- 12:50game at South Carolina? That's a home.
- 12:53Good, that's good. Yeah, because we saw.
- 12:54South Carolina, left, is the Egg Bowl.
- 12:57Oh, how good is that? Now that's no longer
- 12:59Thanksgiving, right? That'll go up against that.
- 13:01Black Friday. Black Friday at night, probably
- 13:0411 AM. 11 AM. What time's I would middle the
- 13:08afternoon? I thought they were OK
- 13:12regardless of that. We'll, we'll check on that.
- 13:14Bama, your thoughts on the SEC? Alabama escaped, I thought.
- 13:18Same time by the way. I think they, yeah, I think
- 13:24Alabama, I think escaped is a good way to put it.
- 13:27I don't want to say this was predictable, but.
- 13:29Well, you called it on Friday, the type of quarterback that
- 13:31both of you guys brought this up that sellers can run around and
- 13:34make plays. He can.
- 13:36And I don't want to say they're lucky that when they needed a
- 13:40drive, they had a drive and then they when they needed to make a
- 13:44defensive play, they ripped it from sellers with the score tie.
- 13:47So and then and then of course you go on and you score again.
- 13:50So you have to give them some credit there.
- 13:53They still can't run the football consistently.
- 13:56That is ultimately going to bite them in the butt.
- 13:58Now they've got LSU, they got a bye week and then LSU comes with
- 14:02a new coach. So that's a little worrisome.
- 14:05Right after that, Oklahoma comes in.
- 14:07That's kind of a payback game. Then they've got, I think I
- 14:10don't know, Eastern Illinois and they go to Auburn.
- 14:12So right now they are, yeah, right, they are.
- 14:16They are the favorite. I think to get to the play A&M
- 14:20in the SEC championship game, they're going to be favored in
- 14:23everything, heavily favored maybe over LSU, probably too
- 14:27heavily favored. That said, again, they did what
- 14:30they were supposed to. You could kind of see this.
- 14:32I didn't know the Kaylin the Boar had lost four games in his
- 14:36Alabama tenure where he had been a double digit favorite.
- 14:39So up until about the last 6 minutes of the game it looked
- 14:42like they were going to add to. That Hey Baba, let me stop real
- 14:45quick. Did they let Bernard score?
- 14:47I They did, didn't they? Absolutely, 100% let him score.
- 14:51And I don't have a problem with him scoring there.
- 14:54And, and they kind of mentioned it on the broadcast.
- 14:56Well, you know, if he just goes down, the game's over.
- 14:58Well, no, the game's not over. You still got to execute a field
- 15:00goal. OK.
- 15:01So, you know, anything can happen there.
- 15:03So with with if there were a minute and a half left, I'd be
- 15:06like get down, get down, get down.
- 15:08But with 30 seconds left, I got no problem then making making
- 15:13South Carolina have to score a touchdown in 30 seconds.
- 15:15So I don't have a problem with that.
- 15:16But they absolutely let him score so that, you know,
- 15:19whatever that kind of pads the numbers.
- 15:22A&M again, just they boy, they look like a they look like a
- 15:25wagon now. They haven't played.
- 15:26They've got a very quote UN quote soft SEC schedule if you
- 15:31really want to look at it. There's no Georgia, there's no
- 15:33Alabama, there's no Vanderbilt, there's no Tennessee.
- 15:36By the way, let me stop you. Let me stop you.
- 15:39You you heard what you just said, right?
- 15:41There's no. Yeah, no, Vanderbilt.
- 15:42Yeah, Absolutely, Absolutely. Yeah.
- 15:45And you should. Teams in the conference.
- 15:47I don't play them. Yeah, and you should say
- 15:48Vanderbilt. I'm not.
- 15:49I'm not knocking for saying, just weird to hear it.
- 15:51Like, yeah, it is very weird to hear that and look out in Austin
- 15:56this week. We'll we'll get in a little bit.
- 15:58But yeah, you know, Texas, you mentioned just the the escape
- 16:02act that they had and poor, poor Mississippi statement.
- 16:05Can they win a game? I mean, they they blow it
- 16:08against Tennessee at home, they blow it against Texas at home
- 16:11and then they blow a game down in Gainesville because their
- 16:13coach was an idiot. So they've just they've got they
- 16:16just really have to be feeling it over in Starkville.
- 16:19Vanderbilt again. I mean, they just keep doing it
- 16:23and I'm going to make Trent mad. But can we just please pump the
- 16:26brakes on the on the Pavia for Heisman?
- 16:28Right. Yeah.
- 16:29I don't mean he's a guy. I'm with you.
- 16:31He would start at 19. Great.
- 16:33Story Great competitor, Tough as nails 10 out of 19 for 129 yards
- 16:38in the pick. He has not thrown for 200 yards
- 16:41in the SEC game this year. High Simpson is not thrown for
- 16:44less than 200. Yards.
- 16:45I think it's Simpson. It's King Hayes.
- 16:48King of Georgia Tech. It's Mendoza.
- 16:51Yeah, I think Mendoza's in there.
- 16:52I can. Probably read me Mendoza.
- 16:55He has favor built in the top ten.
- 16:57I know Vanderbilt in the top 10. Doesn't matter.
- 17:02That's what this award's morphed into though.
- 17:03Got to be a winner. But who right now, who's the
- 17:06favorite? You know, I don't know.
- 17:07It's got to be Mendoza, right? Mendoza are sensing to me those
- 17:11are the 2. Betting, you're probably betting
- 17:14wise, yeah, no, look at Pavi's going to get a bunch of votes,
- 17:16He's going to get a bunch of. Votes.
- 17:17I don't have a problem with that.
- 17:18I don't have a problem bringing him to New York.
- 17:20I really don't. I mean, could you imagine him in
- 17:22New York City? My God, the entourage.
- 17:25That guy working into New York City with all his family and
- 17:29everything. Swagger.
- 17:30I mean it, it would be, it would you would have you almost have
- 17:33to bring him there. If you're ESPN, you want him
- 17:35there. He shouldn't.
- 17:38He's. Box office.
- 17:39He, he, he is box office. But you, you can't you, you the
- 17:43numbers just don't support it. The for a quarterback, all
- 17:47right. For a quarterback, the numbers
- 17:49don't support it. Are you guys ready for
- 17:51championship Saturday to include Vanderbilt?
- 17:54Texas A&M? Don't feel like a championship
- 17:56game? No.
- 17:57Houston, Cincinnati, Oh God and Virginia, Georgia Tech.
- 18:01There's a championship Saturday's Virginia, Virginia's,
- 18:04Virginia's fake. Are they still very much the
- 18:07whole? The whole league's fake.
- 18:09That league stinks. What was what?
- 18:12Since we're going down that path, trend your thoughts on the
- 18:14ACC this week? SMU finally took their first
- 18:17ever conference losses. Yes, of course.
- 18:20Landlocked in Dallas, TX, part of the Atlantic Coast
- 18:23Conference. What a stupid league.
- 18:25It really is. It is a stupid league.
- 18:28I give Belichick credit for trying to end the football game
- 18:31overtime going for two. I agree.
- 18:33I wish they would have knocked off Virginia so we can so we can
- 18:35end that discussion. Cavaliers don't belong in that
- 18:38list, but I guess they're there at this point.
- 18:41Bama. Good stuff, brother.
- 18:42Thank you. Got a good slate of games coming
- 18:45up this week. We'll talk to you about them on
- 18:47Friday. All right.
- 18:48Can't wait, guys. Take care.
- 18:50Yep, You have a good week, Bama. Bob Trent and I recap in the
- 18:52Week in College Football. That championship Saturday
- 18:55seemed to make you a little sad. It did.
- 18:58Is there a isn't there? What don't one of the schools
- 19:00play have a basketball game either?
- 19:02Iowa State play on that day. I think Iowa State, Purdue is.
- 19:04Purdue, that's what it is, and it's early.
- 19:07It's like 11, I think. I'm pretty sure it is.
- 19:10I mean, it's pretty sure it's early in the day.
- 19:12Good stuff. All right, let's head to
- 19:14kxno.com. Give you an opportunity here to
- 19:16win $1000 in this nationwide contest.
- 19:21The keyword this hour is win. Win at KX and o.com.
- 19:25Win at KX and o.com. We didn't touch hardly on the
- 19:28NFL. Well, I don't think we did.
- 19:29We'll get to that tomorrow. Just one quick thing.
- 19:32I know it's my team. Have you seen anyone on Twitter
- 19:36that doesn't like the uniforms they wore yesterday?
- 19:38No, shouldn't. And here they are on TV.
- 19:41Shouldn't that we be what what they're doing?
- 19:43Well, I've said the for the better part of three decades now
- 19:46since they went away from them and.
- 19:47But they went away and they won the.
- 19:48They won the. Super Bowl.
- 19:49They're hideous. They were gross then they were
- 19:51gross in the 90s. They won the.
- 19:52Super Bowl the first time they they're still ugly, that's true.
- 19:55Ugly year after year after year. This is, this is.
- 19:59It's so aesthetically pleasing. The orange and blue, that
- 20:02helmet. Oh, it's spectacular.
- 20:04Yes. Miller and Condon.
- 20:05Scott Doctorman. Next.
- 20:06It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network 130.
- 20:09Welcome back Miller and Condon. Des Moines sports station one O
- 20:126.3 KXNO part of the Iowa Sports Radio Network Appreciate you
- 20:16listening wherever that you are. Trenton I until two that time
- 20:20we'll turn things over off the bench.
- 20:22Lucas and Sean 2 until 5 overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 20:26Scott Dockerman covers college football at the Athletic.
- 20:29He was at Kinnock Stadium on Saturday night watching the
- 20:32Hawks. We'll get into his college
- 20:33football. His latest playoff rankings
- 20:35posted at the Athletic as well. Doc, I guess we should start
- 20:39real quick. Just a college football related,
- 20:41they didn't know Brian Kelly. The latest becomes the 8th power
- 20:44for school to fire their coach in the middle of the season.
- 20:48I don't remember this being this many in previous years Doc, but
- 20:52here we are and Brian Kelly is the latest.
- 20:54Are you surprised? Nothing surprises me anymore.
- 20:58I mean, I think, and when you start talking about this, I
- 21:01think what happened with James Franklin is probably the one
- 21:04that made you go, whoa, really? And, and here we are now with
- 21:07with Brian Kelly, SO2 very much accomplished coaches, probable
- 21:13Hall of Fame coaches, and yet they're on the chopping block
- 21:16this year. So with with Brian Kelly, it's
- 21:20it's, you know, kind of a product of where you are.
- 21:23And he hasn't won at a high enough level for LSU, which went
- 21:28with the expanded playoff. And there's expectations that
- 21:31they get there and they haven't and they're not going to this
- 21:35year. And, and apparently this came
- 21:37down to more of a disagreement among some of the staff that
- 21:41they wanted them to get rid of. But Even so, it's kind of a sign
- 21:46of the times we're in that that's what, you know, right
- 21:49now, I think. But I tell you what, the
- 21:51coaching cycle, the carousel is going to really heat up.
- 21:54And I just wonder, are there going to be enough seats left
- 21:57for decent coaches, or are a few of these schools going to
- 22:01revisit the same thing in three to four years?
- 22:03Well, we still have possible potential, actually Luke Fickle
- 22:06out there. Wisconsin, you got Jonathan
- 22:08Smith and Michigan State with the Big 10 angle to it.
- 22:11But programs like that that certainly are not at the tier of
- 22:14jobs that are already open. Does it make sense to do what
- 22:18Florida try to do with Napier? Hey, let's invest heavily one
- 22:21more year on the roster, try to help them out that way.
- 22:24Could we see more schools do it just because there's so many
- 22:26elite level jobs that are already open?
- 22:30I think it's possible. I mean, I, I think if you got,
- 22:33if you're say, Hugh Freeze at Auburn or or Jonathan Smith
- 22:37maybe at Michigan State, that maybe the market itself make
- 22:40means that, you know, maybe they ought to hold serve for one more
- 22:44year and let them see kind of how they're going to work.
- 22:47And but that of course, runs counter to what we have in
- 22:51college football today, which is 100% emotion dictating
- 22:56everything and and emotion from the donors and and boosters in a
- 23:01lot of these schools. So I, you know, it, yeah, I
- 23:04would behoove some schools to do it that way.
- 23:06But, but I think it's also it it spills over to the just the the
- 23:11what what schools can do that are smart is like what Indiana
- 23:16did with Kurt Signetti. Now, granted, no, he's, he's a
- 23:19special coach to be able to jump in and do what he did, but not
- 23:23to worry about winning the press conference.
- 23:25Don't worry about making a big splash, worry about finding a
- 23:29coach that fits your program and can coach because in two years,
- 23:33nobody cares about the press conference.
- 23:35Nobody cares that, you know, he was able to to slap backs on
- 23:39December 3rd and and after a news conference.
- 23:42But but these schools will never learn, and that's why they're in
- 23:45the same they're in the market every three to four years for a
- 23:48new code. Like, I know it's an NFL
- 23:50problem. They are an NFL program.
- 23:53But remember Nick Siriani's first press conference?
- 23:56He was just ridiculed for days. That's worked out pretty well,
- 24:00Doc. Let's let's head to Kinnick
- 24:02Stadium. You were there on Saturday to
- 24:04watch the dismantling. It's my take here today that
- 24:09we're we're seeing another Coach Ference team get better as the
- 24:12year goes by, and that certainly looks as though the 2025 Hawkeye
- 24:17team is going to join that group.
- 24:19Granted, they've still got those PAC 12 teams and back-to-back
- 24:21weeks ahead, but this team certainly looks a whole lot
- 24:24different now at the end of October than they did at any
- 24:27point in September. They're a much better team and
- 24:31it it's the type of team that you can, I could see it make
- 24:34progress in, you know, even back in September, they know the
- 24:38first quarter of the first game, it was kind of horrifying and
- 24:42you know, especially for the passing game.
- 24:43But then but then they gradually got better there.
- 24:46I thought defensively they played really well at Iowa State
- 24:49and I was in kind of impressed with the way they play because I
- 24:51wasn't sure what you had there and then every single step of
- 24:55the way. And once they got into October,
- 24:58you could see that they're flying their their rhythm.
- 25:01They understand what they are. They they've coached and, and
- 25:03called plays to what they are. And the defense is much better
- 25:07than what I thought it would be and, and, and much better than
- 25:09what it was. So this is a team that's it's
- 25:11ascending. It's to me, one of the 20 best
- 25:15teams in the country. It's it's kind of shows some
- 25:18disconnect in my opinion, but with some of the AP voters and
- 25:22actual on field play. But that will be rectified next
- 25:27week once the CFP comes together and after spending some time
- 25:30with the mock selections. Iowa will do very well among the
- 25:35committee members based on what they look for, not just, well,
- 25:39Texas won. Let's keep Texas in there, even
- 25:42though Texas needed a miracle to do.
- 25:44They did. Got it done.
- 25:45But yes, and you put together that resume what Iowa would have
- 25:49now we're way down the road. There's a lot of football before
- 25:51that. You mentioned the defense, the
- 25:54way that they've stepped forward.
- 25:55There is still 1 lingering thing.
- 25:57The passing game though, improving, still not at any kind
- 25:59of elite level and I don't think it's ever going to get there.
- 26:02Is there another level, though to this passing game?
- 26:04Is there another step up the rung that they can make if they
- 26:09need to go out to USC and they got to win one, you know, 2724
- 26:12and they got to throw the ball? Is there more out of this Iowa?
- 26:17No, yeah. I mean, they, this is not a good
- 26:20passing game. It's terrible, to be honest with
- 26:23you. We can we can shiny it up as
- 26:25much as we want, but it's not good.
- 26:27So yeah, there's a lot more there.
- 26:30How much? They didn't really have to show
- 26:32a whole lot on Saturday. They haven't had to show a lot,
- 26:34a lot this whole month, except for maybe a little bit against
- 26:37Penn State. I would say that what I would
- 26:40like to see more of, and I think they're more capable of is, is,
- 26:43is getting the running backs more involved because, you know,
- 26:48screen passes, that sort of thing.
- 26:50Maybe don't throw it into the ground like against Indiana, but
- 26:53throw it to the their jersey numbers.
- 26:55But I, I think that's probably something that that could be
- 26:58more improved upon. And, and there were yeah, that
- 27:01there were some rough throws. I don't know that Granowski is
- 27:04going to be able to, you know, hey, they need 80.
- 27:06You know, they're the 20 yard line after a touchback punt and
- 27:10they've got, they're down 4 points at, at USC and they got 2
- 27:151/2 minutes to go. I don't know if he's going to be
- 27:17able to do it, but I, I wouldn't necessarily rule it out because
- 27:20of the way he runs the ball and, and the some of the things that
- 27:23Tim Lester's calling, which has been really effective.
- 27:26But but that said, they got a long way to go there.
- 27:28That's not their best punch. But in the other areas, they're
- 27:31strong enough to where they can compete with most teams in the
- 27:35country. Caden Wegen, Where's when it
- 27:37when it's all set and done. He's probably got another
- 27:39touchdown, maybe 2 in the return game ahead of him.
- 27:44He's going to be on any list. I think Doc of some of the best.
- 27:47Obviously Tim Dwight was the first under ferrets to do it and
- 27:50there's been some really good ones sent since then.
- 27:52Back to Philadelphia for just a second.
- 27:54There's one, you know, applying his trade now and Cooper de Jean
- 27:57was unbelievable. I remember Michael Hyde making
- 27:59some plays back there during his tenure.
- 28:02When when it's all said and done, where's Weejun on this
- 28:06list? He has moved up to, to me for, I
- 28:11mean, if you're talking about like all time Iowa, you know,
- 28:14Dwight had a, a gear that was hard to replicate 'cause he was
- 28:18so fast. But Legion is nearly as fast,
- 28:23not quite, but nearly. But he's more, but he's quicker
- 28:26and he's, he's got more, you know, ability to, to make
- 28:29lateral movements. And, and that's, that's
- 28:32something that's rare. I mean, I, I think, you know,
- 28:34Charlie Jones was terrific when he was doing it.
- 28:37Amir Smith, Marcetti as a kick returner.
- 28:40I mean, he was one penalty away from being an all time record
- 28:44holder in Big 10 history from in kick return average.
- 28:48And but I think I think legion might might be the best if he
- 28:52does it one more time. I mean, he's tied with Dwight
- 28:54for with five kick return touchdowns.
- 28:57And if he does it one more time, and if it's like, say, against
- 29:00Oregon and it's late in the game and, you know, brings up that
- 29:03kind of a moment, you know, you're kind of looking at what
- 29:05you know, when I saw out of Dante Hall, when I covered the
- 29:08Chiefs many, many, many years and you're here.
- 29:11As a Broncos fan. As a Broncos, yeah, Hey, I was.
- 29:13I was there for the 92 yarder. There's there's at least two
- 29:17blocks in the back, but we'll save that for another day, yeah.
- 29:22They're they're from the side. They got the helmet.
- 29:23All right, all right. Didn't ruin my stories well.
- 29:27It's a good song. Yeah, so I I think he's right
- 29:30there and he he had Dwyder neck and neck and he still has more
- 29:34of the resume to right. Doc, Is there a home for him in
- 29:37the NFL? Can a guy like that, can he find
- 29:40a spot? I know nobody came back.
- 29:41He wanted assurances that they're going to use them a
- 29:44little bit more offensively and then they've obviously been
- 29:46doing that Here's recently. Is there a spot in the NFL for a
- 29:49guy like that? And he is obviously a dynamic
- 29:52returner. Sure, no question.
- 29:56You know, I, I just brought up Dante Hall and he reminds me a
- 29:58lot of him. I mean, he's, you know, he's
- 30:01not. I mean, their moves are similar.
- 30:04I think King Regent's faster. He's not quite as thick as Dante
- 30:10was. Dante had, you know, really
- 30:11thick base. But I think, you know, you put
- 30:13him on, he can be a kick return for for anybody in the NFL.
- 30:17He's good enough to do that. And and, you know, and and do
- 30:20things like he does at Iowa, which is, you know, they they
- 30:23run among some sweeps and stuff. And he could be a marginal
- 30:26player there. But sure, in the NFL, you know,
- 30:28if you could go out and impact the game, you know, 7-8 times a
- 30:32game. I mean, yeah, he's, you know,
- 30:34you look at, you know, can a can a long, you know, is on the
- 30:38roster and he's a kick returner with The Jets.
- 30:40He didn't play yesterday. But no, he's definitely an NFL
- 30:45caliber player with how he's performed.
- 30:47My last thing for you, Doc, your College Football Playoff
- 30:49rankings after week #9 you're your top four are two, two Big
- 30:5410, two SEC's, Ohio State one Indiana 2A and M3, and Alabama
- 31:004. I don't think you get much
- 31:01pushback there, but it's a website, so with comments, so
- 31:04you might have just how difficult was it this?
- 31:07What was your most difficult choice of the 12 teams that you
- 31:10have in? Yeah, I think I, I would
- 31:13probably go with, you know, some of the the, the lower ones.
- 31:17I mean, when you start to get into the last couple of
- 31:21selections, that's where it's getting really tough.
- 31:23I mean, you know, leaving out BYU, they're undefeated.
- 31:27That one was really tough. But it when you start going OK,
- 31:31BYU or Georgia Tech, you flip a coin.
- 31:34Vanderbilt's played really well and it's hard not to put them in
- 31:37right now at Texas Tech or BYU. Well, we'll find out for sure in
- 31:42about two weeks. But you know, Notre Dame, I
- 31:45dropped them out before I started start more.
- 31:48I started thinking about him like, you know, what are what's
- 31:50our quality win USB? And, you know, Cincinnati's had
- 31:54a really nice year bouncing back from that really close loss to
- 31:57to Nebraska. And I think Iowa's playing as
- 32:00the 4th best team in the Big 10. And, and all you have to do with
- 32:03with them is say, you know, they look at the Indiana game and you
- 32:08know, they're right there with these teams and probably leaving
- 32:10Virginia. And I probably in retrospect
- 32:12would have put Louisville over them because I don't think
- 32:14Virginia is going to last much longer.
- 32:16But I would say that really it's those next four to five teams
- 32:20that are out are the ones that make the of cringe.
- 32:23They would be in the tournament if it was a 16 team tournament.
- 32:26Full circle where we began the conversation.
- 32:28We'll get you out on this dock. Across on the other sideline,
- 32:31there is Philip J Fleck having to call a time out to end the
- 32:34third quarter so he can have the wind at his back and get that
- 32:36goose egg. Is he getting his mail in
- 32:38Minneapolis next year? Yeah, I, I, I think he will
- 32:43unless he doesn't really want to.
- 32:45I mean, there there will be a job available for him if he
- 32:48wants it. Now, if he wants to stay in
- 32:51Minnesota, they'll keep them. I mean, he's he's had a nice run
- 32:55and this game is leaves. Obviously everybody's mad up
- 32:58there for best and but you know, and as they should be and they
- 33:02are in Madison because what happened to Iowa out there.
- 33:04But I think he's had a nice career in Minnesota.
- 33:07I think he'll do well if somebody wants him somewhere
- 33:11else and he wants to leave. But but yeah, there are some
- 33:15things that kind of crack you up and, and doing that instead of
- 33:19just taking it to the 4th quarter and kicking the field
- 33:21goal was just the idiosyncrasies that PJ has sometimes I think
- 33:25drive people crazy. He's got a young quarterback
- 33:28that's pretty good, although he didn't look like that.
- 33:30The Iowa defense had had his number.
- 33:33Good stuff. Scott Duckerman, What does Trent
- 33:35and I are both subscribers to The Athletic.
- 33:37What can we look forward to with your name on it this week?
- 33:40Yeah, I'm doing right now. I'm working on this top that
- 33:44that the 10 most underrated CFP games in the month of November
- 33:49coming up. And you know, there's games like
- 33:52Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, Iowa, USC, you know, Texas A&M and and
- 33:58South Carolina. They're they're games that are
- 34:01under the radar that have real that could have really big
- 34:05impact on the CFP rates. So I'm, I'm going through them
- 34:09all and starting this week with the Virginia and California.
- 34:12So yeah. So there's some, you know, I'll
- 34:16say this, that I on my list before Saturday was Arizona
- 34:20State at Iowa State, BYU, Cincinnati.
- 34:25That Big 12 conference is just bananas.
- 34:27Good stuff, Doc. Thank you as always, Scott.
- 34:30We will try and run you down next Monday if your schedule
- 34:32allows. Thank you, Scott.
- 34:34All right. Thanks so much.
- 34:36Good to talk to Scott Dockerman as we check in on college
- 34:39football with the Dock. Pretty good 110.
- 34:42Most underrated when it comes to college football.
- 34:45I can't believe we're about to turn the calendar.
- 34:47November. So Saturday's game will be in
- 34:49October though, right? No 31st is when unless we get 32
- 34:52days this year and October. First on Saturday it.
- 34:54Is Halloween's Friday night? Is it everywhere now?
- 34:58Didn't I see something change? Yes, we're not doing Beggars
- 35:01Night here in Des Moines anymore, right?
- 35:03That has finally, thank God, fallen by the wayside.
- 35:07Unfortunately, of course, as the calendar falls Friday night, I
- 35:11work Friday night. Yes you do.
- 35:12Where will you be working Friday?
- 35:14Have you decided? Yet I'm going to be out of
- 35:15Valley Stadium so I can do some trick or treating with the kids.
- 35:19Prairie comes to town and Kyle Knox outfit out of Cedar.
- 35:23Rapids Prairie, there you go. So it's a battle of orange,
- 35:26black and orange on Halloween night.
- 35:28Prairie against Valley have the call for you. 96.9 FM.
- 35:31Who wins it? I mean at all.
- 35:33Not Friday. Who's Dowling Catholic You.
- 35:35Think they're the team to be the prohibitive?
- 35:37Favorite. Prohibitive.
- 35:38Favorite. I believe so.
- 35:40Now we had a lot of movement. Iowa City Liberty, I know,
- 35:43opened a lot of eyes. What they did a year ago and get
- 35:46into the that Final four and kind of upsetting the apple cart
- 35:49a little bit. They got a path.
- 35:50They're going to have to get through a couple of central Iowa
- 35:52teams to get there. But Dowling, Tom Wilson,
- 35:55institutionally, just year after year, you know, they're going to
- 35:58be peaking. Valley's a little bit banged up
- 36:00right now too. Bad.
- 36:02Walkie Northwest, though I told you I was impressed by him, but
- 36:04then they fell to Walkie a couple weeks ago.
- 36:06Who snuck into the playoffs? Can we see our valley dolling on
- 36:10a collision course to play before the Dome?
- 36:13They would not beat before the Dome, it would be at the
- 36:15unidome. Yep, they are separated.
- 36:17Yeah, their own pods, as we have a pod system now.
- 36:20Of the two teams in Ankeny, does one have a chance to get to the
- 36:23Dome? Be the Hawks, yeah.
- 36:25Be the Hawks. Yeah, Yeah, they and they're
- 36:28right there, too. I've seen them seen on both
- 36:30sides this year. The Hawks have looked really
- 36:31good. They've also struggled at times.
- 36:33But what I saw for them for the 1st 3 1/2 quarters against Sioux
- 36:36City E, what I saw against them against Valley, yeah, that team
- 36:39absolutely can. Get best team out of central
- 36:42Iowa is. It's tough between Iowa City
- 36:45Liberty and Sioux City. EI Saw Liberty a couple times
- 36:49last year. Also have institutional
- 36:51knowledge of that program because one of my good friends
- 36:54is the starting Center for the team.
- 36:56But it's between those two, Iowa City Liberty or Sioux City E
- 37:00There's something about that E team I really like.
- 37:02I want that story, too. Yeah, I do too.
- 37:04They haven't had. It's been so long.
- 37:06The Sioux City Public Schools haven't had a team in the Dome
- 37:08since 1984. How cool that'd be that.
- 37:11'D be awesome, Trent. No, Trent's done.
- 37:14Mr. Monday night is on the other side.

- 38:08Zip in the other all. Right, 10 1/2 points.
- 38:12You're hopeful you get a game, but you're going to be watching.
- 38:15I will because. You hate watch the Chiefs.
- 38:18All the time. You do.
- 38:21It bothers me. Yeah.
- 38:22It's not good for my health. But the Blue Jays are.
- 38:24Out. That's not good for my health.
- 38:27So. You know, Friday night was
- 38:28unbelievable, right? I mean, I had a night that was
- 38:31unbelievable. Reality set in Saturday.
- 38:33I hope that we go back to Friday night tonight, but I don't think
- 38:36we will. But Mad Max under outs,
