- 0:16Speaker 2: To the advertising dollar, looks like there is more pressure
- 0:18Speaker 2: on the advertising dollar available for sports broadcast. Disney Plus
- 0:22Speaker 2: is now offering local ad packages in New Zealand for
- 0:25Speaker 2: its sports brand ESPN. The spinoff founder and media commentator
- 0:29Speaker 2: Duncan grievers with us. Now, Hi, Duncan, Hi, how are you?
- 0:32Speaker 2: I'm well, thank you mate? Is this going to cut
- 0:34Speaker 2: a lunch of Sky TV and TV and Z.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, it's not helpful, is it. I think you know
- 0:40Speaker 3: that it's a premium sports product, you know, which is
- 0:44Speaker 3: Sky's case, and sometimes TV and Z's they they run
- 0:48Speaker 3: the same, you know, sporting contests and now there's just
- 0:53Speaker 3: another way for advertisers to to kind of reach sad audience.
- 0:58Speaker 3: And in Sky's case, not only is it impacting the advertising,
- 1:02Speaker 3: but you know they've launched the air supported tier at
- 1:06Speaker 3: nine ninety nine according to a Business report, so it's
- 1:11Speaker 3: quite a lot below the entry level Sky Sky Sports
- 1:16Speaker 3: packages as well.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but then again it's for I mean, how many
- 1:20Speaker 2: noballs are you going to have on I don't know, baseball, basketball,
- 1:23Speaker 2: American football.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Through digital platforms. Initially, I don't know. I think you're
- 1:29Speaker 3: probably right it will be relatively trivial. But I think
- 1:33Speaker 3: American sports are globalizing in the same way that like
- 1:36Speaker 3: country music is. You know, the having platforms that are
- 1:40Speaker 3: globally facing means that things which work kind of more
- 1:43Speaker 3: regional activities, you know, especially when they've got social media
- 1:49Speaker 3: platforms for promote promotion. You're just just seeing a lot
- 1:52Speaker 3: of more New Zealand, especially younger New Zealander is kind
- 1:55Speaker 3: of looking at those sports which once almost had a
- 1:59Speaker 3: mortal lock on.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Is this part of the problem that our traditional sports
- 2:03Speaker 2: like cricket and netball and rugby have as they being
- 2:05Speaker 2: crowded out by these American sports that are becoming more popular.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I think it's probably the biggest issue. I think they
- 2:12Speaker 3: were effectively almost not quite monopolies, but near monopoly incumbents
- 2:17Speaker 3: that had a whole you know that they had a
- 2:20Speaker 3: mote as wide as the Tasman around them in terms
- 2:23Speaker 3: of TV and radio that talked about them all time,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and they didn't have many other entertainment options. If you
- 2:28Speaker 3: think about the new world now with YouTube and Instagram
- 2:33Speaker 3: and TikTok being the ways in rugby doesn't have any
- 2:37Speaker 3: kind of hold over there. So, you know, I think
- 2:41Speaker 3: that the competition for anyone who's interested in sports is
- 2:46Speaker 3: just so much high, And you think about something like
- 2:47Speaker 3: the Super Bowl, how enormous that felt this year with
- 2:50Speaker 3: the halftime show, Like it's really hard to compete with
- 2:53Speaker 3: that scale.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a fair point that you make, Duncan. Thanks

- 2:58Speaker 2: spin off founder.
