Latest / Making Everyday Magic: The Podcast / My Why for Homeschooling Has Changed After 10 Years
Transcript
- 0:00Ten years ago when we decided to start homeschooling.
- 0:04One of the very first things that I did is something that I still recommend.
- 0:09Every person who is interested in homeschooling starts with.
- 0:14Welcome back to making Everyday Magic. My name is Shanna.
- 0:16If you are new here, we are a home schooling family of four.
- 0:19We are in our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:22Both of my children have been homeschooled the entirety of their formal education.
- 0:26We have a ninth grader and a fifth grader.
- 0:29Today I want to talk with you about
- 0:32my why for homeschooling
- 0:35and how it has changed over
- 0:41the decade that I have been homeschooling.
- 0:48Before we go any further, we scroll down,
- 0:50hit the big red subscribe button and turn on that bell
- 0:52for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:54As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:55or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:58So first and foremost,
- 1:01I want you to know that
- 1:04homeschooling isn't easy.
- 1:06It is easier than a lot of things.
- 1:10It is
- 1:12kind of as intense as you make it, but simply
- 1:16the idea of homeschooling is big.
- 1:20It is intense.
- 1:22It can be,
- 1:24very intimidating.
- 1:27And one of the ways that I suggest
- 1:30that people start and this is something that we did in our own journey.
- 1:34But one of the things
- 1:35studying my notes down, one of the things that I suggest that people start with,
- 1:39and one of the things that we did start with was our why.
- 1:44Why are we looking at homeschool?
- 1:46Why are we in the idea of homeschool?
- 1:51And when we were starting out
- 1:54talking about this 11 years ago,
- 1:56there was no one in my personal life who homeschooled.
- 2:01I was not plugged into a community of people who homeschool.
- 2:04I had at the time
- 2:06a, well, really started talking about when my oldest was kind of like three.
- 2:10So at the time, I didn't even really have a network
- 2:13of even other moms or parents to chat it out with.
- 2:18We have the oldest cousin in the fam, so it was very,
- 2:24scary monumental, a big decision,
- 2:27and we had a lot of people telling us that it was the wrong decision.
- 2:31And why would you do that? And how could you possibly.
- 2:33And that's not normal.
- 2:34And you did public school just fine.
- 2:37Lots of noise.
- 2:38And so one of the things that we did is we sat down and figured out our why,
- 2:42and our why is what got us
- 2:46one to the decision and two, through all of the hard times
- 2:51and the naysayers and the questions and all of the things.
- 2:55So we determined what our why for homeschooling was.
- 3:00And at the time it really was this simple.
- 3:04She was ahead of her peers and we wanted to try to keep it that way.
- 3:11We did believe that if she went into a traditional school setting,
- 3:15that she would not be making
- 3:17progress or continue making progress on the,
- 3:22on the pace that she was.
- 3:23And so it's like, okay, well, let's let's try it.
- 3:26And so that was our initial wine.
- 3:28And now ten years later and a second
- 3:32child added to the mix later, I can tell you that one.
- 3:35Yes, that is still our why actually for both of our children
- 3:38is that I do believe they are ahead of their same age,
- 3:43same grade level counterparts, and I'd like to keep them that way.
- 3:46I think they will not get bored.
- 3:47I think they will
- 3:49have a better opportunity to learn more and go deeper and all of the things.
- 3:52So that really is still a big foundation of our why.
- 3:56But our why has grown and is tailored honestly to our two children.
- 4:01So my youngest loves animals
- 4:05and part of the why for why we homeschool her
- 4:08is that we can really steer into that passion for her,
- 4:11which I do believe
- 4:12will be a career choice in the future and an education path in the future.
- 4:15And so being able to really steer into she she's in fifth grade
- 4:19and she's had multiple years of pretty advanced biology under her belt.
- 4:24We're very passionate
- 4:25about teaching history and social studies at a very young age, and we have done
- 4:29that in a manner that I am proud of, especially comparatively.
- 4:33I feel like it is more, it is deeper, it is more authentic.
- 4:37And I really enjoy that.
- 4:38And I think that's important for my children.
- 4:42Our older kid, many of you know, has pursued a different path.
- 4:45And that path,
- 4:48is very, very benefited by the fact that we homeschool.
- 4:52So by homeschooling, she can do day
- 4:56time performance opportunities, and by homeschooling, we can put her in
- 5:00different places that are tailored to her during those school hour days.
- 5:05And I'm not saying she wouldn't have similar opportunities otherwise, but
- 5:08this is definitely a why in our book that has grown just from recognizing,
- 5:14availability and her specific needs
- 5:17and her specific, specific paths and pursuits.
- 5:21And so there are so many things that have really kind of played into our why.
- 5:27And there's a list, honestly, I'm I along.
- 5:29I could probably rattle off so many things at music and piano during the day.
- 5:34Performance opportunities during the day took my youngest
- 5:37to a career fair at the zoo during the day.
- 5:42There is so much that goes
- 5:45into our wives and there's some some things really big right ahead.
- 5:49Want to keep them ahead and some things really selfish.
- 5:52Vacations are cheaper and things that really do play into
- 5:58helping us stay the course.
- 6:01If you have not figured out your why,
- 6:07I want you to remember it doesn't have to be huge, okay?
- 6:10It doesn't have to be a really big thing.
- 6:12It can be a small seed
- 6:13that you truly do believe in, that you believe in completely,
- 6:17and something that you can revisit
- 6:20because if you recognize over your path or your idea to homeschool
- 6:26or your exploration of homeschool, that things are not aligning
- 6:29with your why, if your why is no longer serving you.
- 6:33If you haven't updated your why, if you have found that your
- 6:38why is no longer true, it may just be an opportunity for a pivot.
- 6:43Maybe it's time to refine your why, and maybe it is
- 6:46simply time to make a new choice.
- 6:50But your why?
- 6:51Know your motivation.
- 6:53Knowing why you show up every day, knowing why you are willing
- 6:58to put up with the naysayers and put up with the pushbacks
- 7:02and stay up late and lose sleep over making the right decisions.
- 7:05Or pour hours and hours and hours into the research of finding the right options.
- 7:11Your why is
- 7:12going to get you through all of those things.
- 7:15So please, as a homeschool parent,
- 7:17as any parent really, we should always be exploring our motivations.
- 7:21Why do we want this for our children?
- 7:23Why are we willing to sacrifice this?
- 7:25Why are we willing to pay this? Why, why, why?
- 7:28If we can answer those questions, articulate them, and answer them,
- 7:31it really will give you, quite honestly, a very liberated
- 7:34feeling because you know what your purpose is.
- 7:37You know what your plan is and you know what your path is.
- 7:40If you're just out doing whatever, whatever,
- 7:41whatever, it's really easy to just go out and do whatever, whatever, whatever.
- 7:45But if you maintain your why.
- 7:46And I do think that knowing my why initially one helped get us off the ground
- 7:51to help point me in the direction of the resources
- 7:53that we're going to help me continue my why she's ahead.
- 7:57I want her to stay ahead. She's ahead. I want her to stay ahead.
- 7:59And that really helped me get one foot in front of the other.
- 8:02It helped me line up the things you were going to use.
- 8:03It helped me put be put on a path that is going to best service.
- 8:08It's going to best serve my learner.
- 8:10And whenever it was time to bring younger sister into the mix,
- 8:13it really did help me evaluate if homeschooling was the right path for her.
- 8:19It helped me know whether or not this was universal, or whether
- 8:23it was something that would only apply to one of my children.
- 8:27And by universal, I mean in my family.
- 8:28We do know many families where the children specific
- 8:32different paths, different paths entirely.
- 8:35Some are public schools, some are homeschool,
- 8:37some are private schools, some more hybrid school,
- 8:39and even mix within the same families.
- 8:41And that, I think, is really, really important.
- 8:43If you know your why, I need you to know your why for each child.
- 8:47Because each child has a different set
- 8:50of circumstances, a different set of tools that they are working with.
- 8:54And so you cannot have one.
- 8:56Why that is a blanket. Why?
- 8:57Like I said, we've done this for ten years and I can totally identify
- 9:01the whys for each of my children is different.
- 9:04The benefits that my children get from this very different.
- 9:08The paths that my children have taken to get to now very different.
- 9:12And that's because they are different people and it is evolutionary.
- 9:15And I want to best serve my learners.
- 9:18And that means that each one is getting something tailored to them,
- 9:21to their interests, where they are, how they can operate, all of the things.
- 9:25So just a reminder, after ten years of homeschooling,
- 9:28I am still adding to and amending my why.
- 9:32Your why is the thing that you need to keep at the forefront.
- 9:35It's essentially your mission statement.
- 9:37Why am I doing this? Why?
- 9:39Why am I a relearning algebra?
- 9:41These are the things and it's important to identify,
- 9:45know, learn and hold in the very forefront.
- 9:48Write it down. Share it with everybody.
- 9:50Your life will be a lot easier if Grandma and Grandpa come to you.
- 9:52And then why would you do this?
- 9:53Well, she's ahead and I want to keep her there. Okay.
- 9:56Why would you do this?
- 9:57Because we were in a public school classroom,
- 9:59and I recognized that those needs weren't being met.
- 10:02Why would you do this?
- 10:03Because I know that I can provide x, y, z.
- 10:07Well, why would you do this?
- 10:08Because I know that I can do this piece
- 10:11better than that place was doing this piece.
- 10:15Well, why would you do this?
- 10:16Because I recognize that in our pursuit of homeschool, we've done
- 10:20really, really well.
- 10:22But there are other opportunities in different places
- 10:25that might serve them better.
- 10:28Just know your why.
- 10:29Your Y is unique to you. I would love to hear it.
- 10:32If you want to, scroll down to the comments
- 10:33down below and share with us what your why is.
- 10:36Cheaper vacations was really high on my list.
- 10:38Okay. It really, really was.
- 10:41Being able to have that freedom, being able
- 10:43to have a little more relaxation in our everyday schedule.
- 10:46Really high on my list.
- 10:48Not the primary motivator, but definitely epinephrine to share with you.
- 10:52So let me know. What is it?
- 10:53What is it that is making this
- 10:55a decision that maybe is for you, even if it is only for a season?
- 10:59Because remember, you can change wise, can change, needs
- 11:02can change, and paths can absolutely change.
- 11:05So maybe it's that we live so far out of town
- 11:09that, you know, I don't feel comfortable letting my kids ride the school bus.
- 11:12And we are a one car family.
- 11:14Guess what?
- 11:15That's good enough for a season, guys, that really is.
- 11:17If that's your why, I love that for you.
- 11:20Maybe you do have a child who is pursuing something
- 11:22that is very intensive during the day, or even very intensive in the evening,
- 11:25and so you want to give them a little bit more freedom
- 11:27in the day or eliminate homework altogether.
- 11:29You know your kids,
- 11:31you know your motivations and you know what, you are able to provide for them.
- 11:35And you are smart enough to recognize what your why is
- 11:39when your why changes, and when that means that your path should change.
- 11:43I hope you found any of this helpful, entertaining or informative.
