- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Radio Eye's Children's Story Hour. As
- 0:05a reminder, RADIOI is a reading service intended for people
- 0:09who are blind or have other disabilities that make it
- 0:12difficult to read printed materials. Today we will be reading
- 0:18from various books about a holiday called Saint Patrick's Day.
- 0:25Your reader today is Patty. We're going to start with
- 0:29a book that's nonfiction, so that's going to tell us
- 0:32some facts about Saint Patrick's Day. And the title is
- 0:37Saint Patrick's Day Shamrocks. The author is Mary Brendez and
- 0:44the publisher is The Child's World with a publishing date
- 0:48of twenty ten. Let's begin meet the shamrock. Green decorations
- 0:56are everywhere on Saint Patrick's Day. Look at them closely.
- 1:01You will see that many of the decorations are shaped
- 1:05like tiny green plants. Each of the leaves on these
- 1:10plants has three parts. The parts have rounded edges. What
- 1:16are these strange looking plants. They're shamrocks. Shamrocks grow together
- 1:23in large groups. They can cover an area of ground
- 1:28the same way grass does. There's an illustration here on
- 1:32these pages that show a picture of shamrocks. They're very
- 1:37bright green and it's a cluster of these shamrocks all together.
- 1:43They have the three rounded leaves. Continuing, what are shamrocks?
- 1:51Shamrocks are tree foils. That means their leaves have three parts.
- 1:58People are not sure exactly what kind of plant shamrocks are.
- 2:04Most agree that they are clover plants. Clover plants have
- 2:10very short roots. A plant's roots grow in the soil
- 2:15and soak up water. Clovers have small, rounded leaves and
- 2:20short stems. This makes it easy to tell them apart
- 2:24from other plants. Why are shamrocks green? Shamrocks are green.
- 2:32They get their color for something called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is
- 2:37in almost every part of a plant. It lets plants
- 2:42soak up energy from the sun. Plants use this energy
- 2:46to make food, and this is called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll and
- 2:52shamrocks makes them the perfect color for celebrating Saint Patrick's Day.
- 2:58What is Saint Patrick Day? Saint Patrick's Day is a
- 3:03holiday that takes place every year on March seventeenth. People
- 3:09spend the day celebrating the country of Ireland. They wear
- 3:13green clothes to remember the green fields of Ireland. They
- 3:17cook Irish food and listen to Irish music. Green shamrocks
- 3:22can be seen everywhere. You don't have to be Irish
- 3:26to celebrate Saint Patrick's day. It is a lot of
- 3:29fun no matter what. Who was Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick
- 3:36was born long ago in Britain. He was kidnapped by
- 3:41pirates when he was sixteen years old. The pirates sold
- 3:45him to work as a slave in Ireland. Patrick was
- 3:49very unhappy and missed his family in Britain. He prayed
- 3:53that God would help him get free. Saint Patrick is
- 3:57an important religious figure. His image can be seen in statues,
- 4:03stained glass, and paintings throughout the world. Patrick came back
- 4:08home to Britain after having a dream. In the dream,
- 4:12God told him about a ship he could use to escape.
- 4:17Soon he had another dream. He dreamed that God told
- 4:21him the people of Ireland needed him. Patrick went to
- 4:25study at a monastery, then he sailed back to Ireland.
- 4:31A carving of Saint Patrick's head is on display at
- 4:34Chapel Royal in Ireland's Dublin Castle. What did Saint Patrick do?
- 4:42Saint Patrick taught the Irish people about God. He preached
- 4:47to anyone who would listen. He helped build churches and schools.
- 4:52Soon people everywhere began to hear about him. They began
- 4:57telling stories about him. These led are still known today.
- 5:03There are many different stories about Saint Patrick. That is
- 5:06one reason people still remember him today. The legend of
- 5:12Saint Patrick and the Shamrock, the best known legend about
- 5:17Saint Patrick, involves the shamrock. Patrick's teachers at the monastery
- 5:23told him that God was made of three beings. People
- 5:27in Ireland did not understand this idea. Patrick told the
- 5:31people that God's three parts were like the three parts
- 5:34of the shamrocks leaf. The legend of Saint Patrick and
- 5:39the shamrock is interesting, but it is not necessarily true shamrocks. Today,
- 5:47people see shamrocks as lucky charms. The shamrock is also
- 5:52a symbol of Ireland. Its green color reminds people of
- 5:57Ireland's green countryside. You might not believe the legend of
- 6:02Saint Patrick and the shamrock sam Rock. Shamrocks are still
- 6:06cute and colorful though they are fun to decorate with
- 6:11on Saint Patrick's Day. Now you know why people use
- 6:16shamrocks to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. And on this final page,
- 6:22there's a picture of a young girl who's wearing a
- 6:24bright green, sparkly hat, and on the front of the
- 6:29hat is a golden shamrock. She must be celebrating Saint
- 6:34Patrick's Day. And now let's read a story. So that's fiction.
- 6:40It's just a story called the Leprechaun who Lost His Rainbow.
- 6:47This book was written by Sean Callahan, illustrated by Nancy Cote,
- 6:53and published by A V Two Books in twenty fifteen.
- 7:00In the soft drizzle that was falling on Saint Patrick's Day,
- 7:05Colleen wished her grandfather good luck. He gave her a
- 7:09piece of red licorice, her favorite candy, and then he
- 7:13was off to the parade to play the bagpipes. Her
- 7:18grandfather had told Colleen that the notes he and his
- 7:22band mates played were like colors on the air, colors
- 7:28only your ears could see. Playing music is like building
- 7:32a rainbow, he said. A little man I once knew
- 7:37taught me that. On this page, there's an illustration of
- 7:43a town, a street in a town, and along the
- 7:47sidewalk are people waiting to see the parade. And in
- 7:50this parade there will be a band with bagpipes and
- 7:54drums and flutes. On the side of the page. There
- 7:58is the grandfather, Colleen's grandfather, talking to her. He's handing
- 8:03her the piece of red licorice, and Colleen and her
- 8:06little black dog are standing there under her red umbrella.
- 8:11It must be raining. And then the bagpipes are on
- 8:17the back of the grandfather, and on the grandfather's shoulder
- 8:22is a tiny little figure dressed in green with a
- 8:25black top hat. And this must be the little fellow
- 8:31called Leprechaun. Continuing, her mom and dad were going to
- 8:38watch the parade from the window, but Colleen sat on
- 8:42the porch under her yellow umbrella. What if it rained
- 8:46so much that everyone went home and no one heard
- 8:49her grandfather's bagpipes, that would be a shame. His music
- 8:54was so beautiful and so sad, it made people smile
- 8:58and cry. Once to pass the time, she played a
- 9:03song on her green pennywhistle, which had a tiny shamrock
- 9:08printed on it. Her grandfather had brought it all the
- 9:12way from Ireland. It was her favorite thing in all
- 9:16the world, and she never let anyone touch it. When
- 9:20she finished the tune, she took a bite of her licorice.
- 9:25Just then a little man appeared on the top step.
- 9:29It was a leprecaun. I like your pennywhistle. The little
- 9:34man said, you play very well. Colleen started to say
- 9:39thank you. Then suddenly the leprechaun jumped into the air
- 9:43and took the licorice stick right out of her mouth.
- 9:48He dropped it into his hat. Thank you, he said,
- 9:53I'll be needing that or My name's not Roy g viv.
- 9:59It's just the shade of red I'm looking for now.
- 10:03The illustration here shows Colleen sitting on the steps with
- 10:07her red umbrella and her little black dog is next
- 10:10to her, and there's the tiny little man snatching that
- 10:15red licorice stick right from her hand, and he puts
- 10:19it down into his black top hat while he's jumping
- 10:24up into the air, continuing the story. Colleen was shocked.
- 10:31What are you doing, She shouted, give me my candy.
- 10:35The leprechaun frowned. Your grandfather was much more helpful. You
- 10:42know my grandfather, Colleen asked, Yes, we created a rainbow
- 10:47together back when he was a boy, Mister bibb explained.
- 10:53Colleen was puzzled. Could this be the little man her
- 10:57grandfather talked about. Mister bibv looked glum, I've lost my
- 11:04rainbow again, and my gold is at the end of it.
- 11:09To be a leprechaun in good standing, I must have gold,
- 11:13So I need someone's help to build a rainbow. He paused.
- 11:18That someone is you. Colleen frowned. Leprechauns were tricky. Everyone
- 11:28knew that. Could mister bibv be telling the truth? Let
- 11:34me show you something, eleprechaun said, Spin round with a
- 11:39hat and watch what happens. She twirled around holding the hat. Suddenly,
- 11:45a streak of bright red, just the color of her licorice,
- 11:50sprang out of the hat, hung in the air for
- 11:52the moment, and then disappeared. Colleen was amazed. Mister Ben said,
- 12:02we're starting to make a rainbow. If there's a rainbow,
- 12:06the sun will come out to shine on the parade.
- 12:11Colleen took a deep breath. What do we do for
- 12:16every color? I need something that belongs to you, something red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,
- 12:25and violet. Colleen looked around. There was her new orange basketball.
- 12:33She hated to give it up, but she tossed it
- 12:36into mister Bibb's hat. Immediately, an orange streak shot up.
- 12:44She gave him her yellow umbrella yellow curved under the orange.
- 12:50Then her blue ribbons went in. A beautiful blue appeared.
- 12:56Next to go was her indigo headband, and finally her
- 13:01favorite violet scarf. Now there was a rainbow of colors
- 13:07coming out of the hat. But something was wrong. Right
- 13:12between the yellow and blue, there was an empty space.
- 13:17Colleen knew which color was missing. Yes, sweened green. Mister
- 13:23Bibb said, I'm not just any green, Colleen. It's a
- 13:29very hard color to find, which is why rainbows are
- 13:33so rare. It was raining harder, the parade goers were
- 13:38starting to leave. Colleen was nervous, what would the leprechaun want.
- 13:46The illustration here shows a mother, a mother and three children,
- 13:51and she's pushing a baby carriage and it's starting to rain.
- 13:56Several of the children have raincoats on, but the mother
- 13:59has decided that she's not gonna stand out in the rain,
- 14:02so she's leaving the parade area. Continuing, You're going to
- 14:09have to make one more sacrifice, lass, Mister Bibb said,
- 14:14I'm going to need your penny whistle with the shamrock
- 14:19on it. That green is the last perfect collar I
- 14:24need for my rainbow. Colleen started to cry. No, she said,
- 14:31clutching her precious pennywhistle. My grandfather gave it to me.
- 14:37But Colleen, dear, if you give me the penny whistle,
- 14:41you and I can make the sun shine on this
- 14:44parade and on your grandfather. Mister Bibb, pleading, said pleadingly.
- 14:51Colleen held the penny whistle to her lips and blue
- 14:55one last sad note, and then drop the penny whistle
- 15:03into the leprechaun's hat. In a flash, the rain stopped,
- 15:10the sun burst through the clouds, and a rainbow, complete
- 15:16with the most beautiful shade of green ever spread across
- 15:22the sky. On the illustration here we see the musicians,
- 15:28her grandfather with the bagpipes and the drummers, and some
- 15:32people holding a banner ready for the parade to begin,
- 15:36and the families gathered to watch the parade. And in
- 15:41the background is the beautiful rainbow spread across the sky.
- 15:48Continuing the parade, goers gazed up in wonder, and Colleen's
- 15:56grandfather began to play the bagpipes. The music was so
- 16:01beautiful that people smiled and cried at once. Nobody noticed
- 16:09that a pot of gold had appeared at the end
- 16:13of the rainbow right on Colleen's front lawn. Roy g
- 16:20biv dug his hand into the pot of gold and
- 16:25pulled out a flute that looked just like Colleen's penny whistle.
- 16:32But this wasn't a toy flute. It was a real
- 16:36one made of silver, and there was a shamrock on
- 16:40it that looked like Colleen's, only this one was made
- 16:45of emeralds. Thanks for sharing with me, mister BIVV said
- 16:51as he handed Colleen the flute, and with that he
- 16:56and his pot of gold were gone. Colleen's grandfather stood
- 17:03in front of her. Who was that you were talking with,
- 17:07he asked Roy g Biv. She said, he's a leprechaun.
- 17:13I thought I recognized him. Her grandfather said, he gave
- 17:18me this flute. Grandpa, Ah, tis a nice one, silver,
- 17:24just like my bagpipes. What do you say? We play
- 17:27a tune? So together they played when Irish Eyes are Smiling,
- 17:34The colors danced on air, and here in the final illustration,
- 17:41Colleen and her grandfather are playing music together. Her little
- 17:46black dog sits beside her. Colleen plays her beautiful new
- 17:51silver flute, and the grandfather plays the bagpipes and that's
- 17:57the end of this book called the Leprechaun Who Lost
- 18:02His Rainbow. And now I have another book to share
- 18:07with you so we can learn more about this holiday
- 18:10called Saint Patrick's Day. The title of this book is
- 18:14simply Saint Patrick's Day. The author is Gail Gibbons. The
- 18:21publisher of this book is Holiday House and it was
- 18:26published in twenty nineteen. Let's begin. Saint Patrick's Day is
- 18:33celebrated each year on March seventeen. The holiday is celebrated
- 18:40by the Irish and other people in many parts of
- 18:44the world. They honor Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland.
- 18:52Saint Patrick lived many years ago. He was born in
- 18:57Britain around the year three hundred eighty and raised in
- 19:03a Christian family. His parents didn't name him Patrick. Some
- 19:08people believe his name was Maewin. While still a boy,
- 19:14he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland, where he was
- 19:18made a slave. His captors forced him to herd sheep.
- 19:24He prayed that God would help him. Six years later
- 19:28he escaped. After finally arriving back in Britain, he lived quietly,
- 19:37thought and prayed. He realized what he wanted to do.
- 19:43He had dreams of returning to Ireland to teach the
- 19:47people about God. He went to France to study religion.
- 19:56In the year four hundred thirty two, the head of
- 19:59the ca Atholic Church, the Pope, named Patrichius, the Latin
- 20:05name for Patrick. He became a priest and then a bishop,
- 20:12so he was given the name Patrichius. At last, Bishop
- 20:18Patrick's dreams came true. He sailed back to Ireland and
- 20:24began preaching. He built churches and schools all over the country.
- 20:31People noticed his kind ways. Bishop Patrick spent the rest
- 20:38of his life caring for the Irish people. They loved
- 20:43this man. People honor Patrick on March seventeenth, because he
- 20:49died on that date in the year four hundred and
- 20:51sixty one. Later, the Catholic Church made him a saint.
- 20:57Saint Patrick Day. Many things are done to celebrate this holiday.
- 21:03People go to church to give thanks to Saint Patrick
- 21:07for his work in Ireland. People have fun too. They
- 21:12dress in green to honor an ancient Irish custom. Hundreds
- 21:17of years ago, the people of Ireland burned branches with
- 21:20green leaves during the month of March and spread the
- 21:24ashes in fields to make them fertile. And green. To
- 21:29wear green is to honor Ireland. The Emerald Isle decorations
- 21:34are put on doors and windows. Shamrocks appear everywhere. The
- 21:40shamrock is a plant that has three leaves and looks
- 21:43like clover. It is the symbol of Saint Patrick as
- 21:47well as of Ireland. Laprechauns are remembered on Saint Patrick's Day.
- 21:54Long ago, some Irish folk believed in these little magic creatures.
- 21:59It was if you caught a leprechaun, you could make
- 22:03him lead you to a pot of gold. Leprechaun comes
- 22:07from the Old Irish word leucorpon, meaning we one. People
- 22:14believed they only were as big as your thumb. There
- 22:19is the chalaye too. In Ireland. Many years ago there
- 22:24was an old oak forest called Chialae. The Irish liked
- 22:30to own a sprig of Chiale, a short oak club
- 22:34from the forest. Often people decorate Chilea Ley's with green ribbons.
- 22:41The harp is one of the oldest musical instruments and
- 22:46has been popular with the Irish people since early times.
- 22:51It serves as another Saint Patrick's Day decoration. On Saint
- 22:56Patrick's Day, people may give cards to their family. People
- 23:01also may make cakes or cookies and goodies to share
- 23:05with others. Some people give flowers, Others wear green carnations
- 23:10or pin shamrocks through their clothes to celebrate the holiday.
- 23:14There may be Saint Patrick's Day plays too. Some families
- 23:20and friends have quiet times together in remembrance of Saint Patrick.
- 23:25Often there are meals to share Saint Patrick's Day. Parties
- 23:29are given sometimes, and it is fun to sing Irish songs,
- 23:35dance Irish jigs, and play games. In many places there
- 23:40are Saint Patrick's Day parades. Flags flutter in the wind,
- 23:45Pipers and fiddlers play Irish tunes. There are green hats
- 23:50and people in costume and green banners, lots of green.
- 23:56The first time Saint Patrick's Day was celebrated in the
- 23:59United States was in seventeen thirty seven in Boston. Each year,
- 24:05the Irish and many other people love to celebrate Saint
- 24:09Patrick's Day. For many people, it is a day of
- 24:13worship and for celebration, and if you're not Irish, to
- 24:17feel a little bit Irish. Ne hear at the end
- 24:22of the book there are some legends about Saint Patrick.
- 24:26Saint Patrick and the Snakes is one legend. It is
- 24:30said that Saint Patrick got rid of all the snakes
- 24:33in Ireland by beating his drum. He frightened them into
- 24:37the sea, and today there are no snakes in Ireland.
- 24:41Another legend is Saint Patrick and the Poison. Some people
- 24:45say that a wizard tried to kill Saint Patrick by
- 24:48putting poison in his drink. Saint Patrick quickly turned it
- 24:52up into ice and tossed it from his cup. Another
- 24:58legend is Saint Patrick and his It is said that
- 25:02Saint Patrick had a friend who borrowed his cloak. There
- 25:05was a big fire where the friend was staying, but
- 25:09he was not hurt because he was wearing Saint Patrick's cloak.
- 25:13And the legend of Saint Patrick and the Shamrock. Saint
- 25:17Patrick used the shamrock to explain to people about the
- 25:20Holy Trinity, one God in three divine beings, the Father,
- 25:25the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Growing at his feet
- 25:29was a shamrock. He used this plant to explain three
- 25:33and one one stem with three leaves. Saint Patrick and
- 25:40the fish. Another legend is that each year on March seventeenth,
- 25:45fish rise from the sea. They passed before Saint Patrick's
- 25:50altar in Ireland and then disappear back into the sea.
- 25:54And a legend, the final legend Saint Patrick and the Sunset.
- 25:59It is said that the sun didn't set when Saint
- 26:01Patrick died, and that it shone in the sky for
- 26:04twelve days and nights. And that's the end of this
- 26:08book simply called Saint Patrick's Day. And now I think
- 26:14I have just enough time to share with you a
- 26:16few jokes. These jokes come from a book called Let's
- 26:20Celebrate Saint Patrick's Day by Peter and Connie Rupe, illustrated
- 26:24by Gwynn Connolly, published by Millbook Press in two thousand
- 26:30and three. Here's the first joke. What is green and
- 26:37stays outside patty o furniture? What did the leprechaun learn
- 26:47in school? The elf a BT alphabet? How can you
- 26:55tell if an irishman is having a good time he's
- 27:00dublin over with laughter? What's the best month for a parade? March? Knock, knock?
- 27:13Who's there? Irish? Irish? Who? Irish? You a happy Saint
- 27:21Patrick's Day? Why are potatoes good detectives because they keep
- 27:31their eyes peeled? What is raised in Ireland during the
- 27:38rainy season? Umbrellas. Who is a famous Irish purple dinosaur? Blarney?
- 27:52How are tuna, fish and an Irish harp different? You
- 27:59can't tune a fish. When is an Irish potato not
- 28:06an Irish potato? When it's a French fry. That's all
- 28:13the time we have to day for Children's Story Hour.
- 28:18Please join us next time as we read more stories
- 28:22or fables and fairy tales. And I thank you so
- 28:26much for listening, and please stay tuned for continuing programming
