- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Wednesday, it's the
- 0:1529th of October. And thank you for tapping on
- 0:18play and inviting me into your busy old days so that you and I
- 0:24can read God's Word together. And today we are all rubbing our
- 0:29hands together, opening up our Bibles, flicking through the
- 0:32pages late into the New Testament, and we are landing on
- 0:36the book of James. Oh, the book of James.
- 0:42You need to know something about me.
- 0:44I am a big fan of the theology of Martin Luther.
- 0:48He is my man. I'm literally holding in my
- 0:51right hand a little Playmobil figure of Martin Luther who sits
- 0:55beside my monitor on my desk. He is the only thing other than
- 0:58the essentials that sits here. He inspires me to grab hold of
- 1:03God's gift of grace to me. And he really didn't like James.
- 1:07He looked at James and he said it's all about what you have to
- 1:10do. It's not about the grace of God.
- 1:13It doesn't talk about Jesus. It's got no kind of overarching
- 1:16Christology. It is just giving instructions
- 1:20for a faithful life. So he called it the Epistle of
- 1:23straw. He thought it was empty and not
- 1:26worth a whole lot. But sorry Martin, I'm going to
- 1:30have to disagree with you here. This is a glorious book that
- 1:33just speaks so practically written by a James.
- 1:37There were 4 main Jameses of the day, but kind of the balance of
- 1:41scholarly opinion would say it's James Jesus brother who was
- 1:45indeed the leader of the church at that time in Jerusalem.
- 1:48And he writes this to the Jews spread around the diaspora.
- 1:52So Jews everywhere to encourage them to live in this way that is
- 1:58consistent with this faith in Jesus and not just have this
- 2:02cosy belief in their heart that doesn't actually shape their
- 2:05lived lives. So it is a wonderful reminder
- 2:09and instruction for us as we live in a very comfortable world
- 2:14where we can relegate our faith to be a quiet little internal
- 2:18process that doesn't affect us too much.
- 2:21So with that in mind, let U.S. Open up and read together James
- 2:25chapter 1. This letter is from James, a
- 2:38slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:42I'm writing to the 12 tribes, Jewish believers scattered
- 2:46abroad. Greetings, dear brothers and
- 2:50sisters. When troubles of any kind come
- 2:53your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy for
- 2:58you. Know that when your faith is
- 2:59tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
- 3:02So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed,
- 3:06you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
- 3:11If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it
- 3:15to you. He will not rebuke you for
- 3:18asking, but when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God
- 3:22alone. Do not waver, for a person with
- 3:25divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is
- 3:30blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to
- 3:34receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between
- 3:37God and the world. They are unstable in everything
- 3:41they do. Believers who are poor have
- 3:45something to boast about, for God has honoured them, and those
- 3:49who are rich should boast that God has humbled them.
- 3:52They will fade away like a little flower in the field.
- 3:56The hot sun rises and the grass Withers.
- 3:59The little flower droops and falls and it's beauty fades
- 4:02away. In the same way the ritual fade
- 4:05away. With all of their achievements.
- 4:08God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.
- 4:13Afterward, they will receive the crown of life that God has
- 4:16promised to those who love Him. And remember when you were being
- 4:21tempted, Do not say God is tempting me.
- 4:24God is never tempted to do wrong, and He never tempts
- 4:28anyone else. Temptation comes from our own
- 4:31desires, which entice us and drag us away.
- 4:35These desires give birth to sinful actions, and when sin is
- 4:39allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
- 4:43So don't be misled my dear brothers and sisters.
- 4:46Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from
- 4:51God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.
- 4:55He never changes or casts A shifting shadow.
- 4:59He chose to give birth to us by giving us His true word, and we
- 5:03out of all creation became His prized possession.
- 5:09Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters, you must
- 5:12all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
- 5:17Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.
- 5:21So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives and humbly
- 5:25accept the Word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the
- 5:30power to save your souls. But don't just listen to God's
- 5:34Word. You must do what it says,
- 5:37otherwise you are only fooling yourselves.
- 5:39For if you listen to the Word and don't obey, it's like
- 5:42glancing at your face in a mirror.
- 5:44You see yourself walk away and forget what you look like.
- 5:49But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you
- 5:52free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard,
- 5:57then God will bless you for doing it.
- 6:00If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you
- 6:04have a fool in yourself and your religion is worthless.
- 6:08Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means
- 6:12caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to
- 6:17let the world corrupt you. Jesus, as we begin this journey
- 6:30through James with this mountain of instruction on how we can
- 6:36live godly lives, where our lives are in congruence with our
- 6:41faith, and that that makes a difference.
- 6:45Jesus, I pray that you would never allow us to take our eye
- 6:49off the prize, which is you and your grace, your sacrificial
- 6:54death for our inadequacy. And that it's only through you,
- 6:59Jesus, through what you have done for us and who we are in
- 7:04the light of everything that you have done for us that brings us
- 7:08whole and acceptable before our Father in heaven.
- 7:13So we just thank you, Jesus. We thank you that you have made
- 7:16this all possible. We thank you that it's through
- 7:19everything that you've done that we are made whole.
- 7:23And that this transformation changes more than just our
- 7:27hearts, but changes our lives as well.
- 7:30So here we are. We give you our hearts.
- 7:33We give you our lives. Use them for your glory and your
- 7:37Kingdom and your name. We pray Jesus, Amen.
