- 0:58a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor
- 1:01David. Today's Did You Know episode takes us
- 1:04into the most extraordinary presidential secession
- 1:07in American history. The night Calvin Coolidge
- 1:11became the 30th President of the United States.
- 1:13A moment that unfolded quietly. A moment lit
- 1:17only by a kerosene lamp. A moment witnessed by
- 1:21just a few family members in a small Vermont
- 1:25farmhouse. In the summer of 1923, President Warren
- 1:31G. Harding was traveling across the nation on
- 1:33what he called Voyage of Understanding. He hoped
- 1:37to reconnect with American people after scandals
- 1:40had shaken confidence in his administration.
- 1:43But during the trip, Harding became seriously
- 1:46ill. What began as suspected food poisoning quickly
- 1:50turned into pneumonia and heart failure. On August
- 1:542, 1923, at 7 .30 p .m. Pacific Time, President
- 1:58Harding died in San Francisco at the age of 57.
- 2:01The nation was stunned. Few Americans knew how
- 2:05sick he truly was. Coolidge receives the news.
- 2:09Vice President Calvin Coolidge was far from Washington,
- 2:12visiting his family home in Plymouth Notch, Vermont,
- 2:15a tiny village, a quiet farmhouse, no electricity,
- 2:19no telephone. The Coolidge family had already
- 2:22gone to bed. Just after midnight, a messenger
- 2:25arrived with the news. President Harding was
- 2:28dead. Coolidge was awakened and told he was now
- 2:31President of the United States. At 2 .47 a .m.
- 2:35on August 3, 1923, Calvin Coolidge took the presidential
- 2:39oath of office. Not in Washington, not in a courthouse,
- 2:43and not in a grand chamber, but in the front
- 2:47room of his family farmhouse. The oath was administered
- 2:50by his father, John Calvin Coolidge Sr., a Vermont
- 2:54notary public, a justice of the peace, and on
- 2:57that night, the man who swore the next president
- 3:00of the United States. The ceremony was simple.
- 3:02A kerosene lamp provided the only light. Coolidge
- 3:06placed his hand on the family Bible. A few relatives
- 3:09and neighbors stood quietly nearby. No reporters,
- 3:12no photographers, no officials from Washington.
- 3:16Later, to remove any legal doubt, Coolidge repeated
- 3:19the oath before a federal judge in Washington.
- 3:22Calvin Coolidge was known as Silent Cal, a man
- 3:26of few words, disciplined, honest, steady. Before
- 3:30becoming vice president, he served as governor
- 3:32of Massachusetts, gaining national attention
- 3:35during the Boston police strike of 1919, when
- 3:39he declared, There is no right to strike against
- 3:42the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime.
- 3:46This statement made him a national figure and
- 3:49helped place him on the 1920 Republican ticket.
- 3:53Restoring trust after the scandal. Although Harding
- 3:57was never proven to have personally profited
- 4:00from corruption. His administration was shaken
- 4:03by scandals, including the infamous Teapot Dome
- 4:06scandal involving illegal oil leases and bribery.
- 4:11Coolidge responded with calm determination. He
- 4:14cooperated fully with the investigation. He removed
- 4:17officials implicated in wrongdoing. He emphasized
- 4:20integrity, fiscal responsibility, and transparency.
- 4:23And slowly, confidence in the presidency began
- 4:26to return. Coolidge finished Harding's term and
- 4:30won election in 1924. His presidency focused
- 4:33on limited federal government, lower taxes, balanced
- 4:36budgets, and reducing the national debt. The
- 4:40nation experienced significant economic growth
- 4:42during much of the roaring 20s. Coolidge famously
- 4:45said, the chief business of the American people
- 4:47is business. Calvin Coolidge's succession remains
- 4:52one of the most unique in American history, a
- 4:55president sworn in by his own father. In a farmhouse,
- 4:58in the middle of the night, by light of a single
- 5:01lamp. A peaceful and constitutional transfer
- 5:04of power during a moment of national uncertainty.
- 5:08It is a reminder that leadership does not always
- 5:10begin in grand halls or under bright lights.
- 5:13Sometimes it begins quietly, in a small room,
- 5:16with a Bible, a lamp, and a solemn oath. This
- 5:21has been Voices of Life. Where history lives.
