- 1:00SPEAKER_10: Welcome to the show.
- 1:02SPEAKER_10: Welcome.
- 1:04SPEAKER_10: Jackie, I tried to I reached out to you immediately with upon the the announcement that SheCommerce was coming to all of our lives.
- 1:11SPEAKER_10: I'm like, I we gotta get you on the show.
- 1:13SPEAKER_10: And now we finally did.
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: You did, and Scotty, we were so we were like, oh my god, we're like five minutes old and somebody wants to talk to us already.
- 1:22SPEAKER_06: How excited.
- 1:24SPEAKER_06: We can't do it because we don't feel legit.
- 1:26SPEAKER_06: You know that whole thing where you feel you need to like walk a million miles before you're like referring to what what'd you say imposter syndrome?
- 1:39SPEAKER_10: Yes, imposter syndrome.
- 1:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I did have that, and then I spent like 10 minutes with Christina and it's all gone.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Wait, I have to know how did you two connect?
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: So you you all run an incredible e-commerce podcast called SheCommerce.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: How did this come to be?
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: Oh gosh.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: Well, I'll start, Christina.
- 2:01SPEAKER_06: Both of us, both of us are really good friends with Peter Bond and Sri Raj Gopal from the CPG guys, right?
- 2:09SPEAKER_06: Um, they I mean they're like the the the the the beasts of of CPG.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: Um and Peter said to us, you need to go and do this this course at Cornell, this uh this uh program, this omnichannel program at Cornell.
- 2:25SPEAKER_06: And I was like, Well, hey, you know, a New York, B, Cornell, C, yes.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: Um, so it was like, okay, yes, we so we went.
- 2:34SPEAKER_06: And he goes, Oh, um, I have this other friend.
- 2:37SPEAKER_06: I have a feeling the two of you would get along well.
- 2:41SPEAKER_06: And this other friend was Christina, and I'm like, Oh, Peter, you're such an idiot.
- 2:45SPEAKER_06: Of course, of course, I'll get along well.
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: I get along well with everybody.
- 2:49SPEAKER_06: I play nicely, and secretly thinking, don't try to get me friends, I can get my own.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: Oh, oh my god, stop matchmaking me.
- 3:01SPEAKER_09: I need help, Jackie, because of that attitude.
- 3:03SPEAKER_09: You see, and I like her.
- 3:07SPEAKER_06: I met Christina, and I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 3:11SPEAKER_06: It was instant love.
- 3:12SPEAKER_06: Love, love at first sight.
- 3:14SPEAKER_08: She's such beautiful.
- 3:15SPEAKER_09: That was two years ago, it was just our anniversary.
- 3:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was literally chronologically two years ago, but in our souls, we've known each other forever.
- 3:26SPEAKER_09: Forever.
- 3:27SPEAKER_09: And then almost a year to the date I was in London where Jackie lives, and we met up, and we were actually recording uh like a congratulatory uh message, video message for the CBG guys, and having a few glasses of prosecco, as we we tend to do that, yeah, and just you know, shooting the shit.
- 3:48SPEAKER_09: Am I allowed to say that?
- 3:49SPEAKER_09: Sorry.
- 3:49SPEAKER_10: Um you want here.
- 3:51SPEAKER_10: You your yours is a hoity toody pod.
- 3:54SPEAKER_10: We're we're do whatever we want here.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: I heard them curse on their pod.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we've had yeah, yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_10: We didn't catch that.
- 4:02SPEAKER_09: That was but we we were doing that, and we're like, hey, we are we're funny, and we're like talking about some like real stuff that people need to hear and have these conversations.
- 4:12SPEAKER_09: And we're like, we could do this.
- 4:14SPEAKER_09: So six months later, lots of planning, very intentional, um, you know, focus of what we want to be and how we want to do it.
- 4:21SPEAKER_09: We launched our first episode mid-November 2025, and here we are, what, eight months later-ish?
- 4:28SPEAKER_09: And just enjoying every minute.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: And the whole time between the Prosecco and the launching, we had Peter Peter go to us, you guys, you have to do a podcast, you have to do it, you have to launch.
- 4:41SPEAKER_06: And we're like, and he goes, A, you're smart.
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: I'm like, Yeah, obviously.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: Um, he goes, but B, you're way hotter than we are, and we're like, Yeah, also true.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Also true.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: Also, you know, I I will say Peter Bond has a great, you know, as Scott likes to say, a great face for a podcast, radio.
- 5:02SPEAKER_10: Peter, I didn't say that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_10: I was just about to sing you, you know, Matt.
- 5:05SPEAKER_10: That's inspired.
- 5:06SPEAKER_10: That's fire.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: Peter had offered to like do a podcast with me in Can.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: He's like, let's do one in Can together.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: I'm like, Yeah, let's go.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: And then I never heard a thing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_08: So he ghosted you.
- 5:21SPEAKER_09: That's showing your money.
- 5:22SPEAKER_10: Yeah, maybe that was it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_10: Maybe you needed some money.
- 5:25SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 5:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that was a fail.
- 5:29SPEAKER_10: I'm sad now for you.
- 5:31SPEAKER_10: But you guys speaking of can, they got to go to can.
- 5:34SPEAKER_06: We did, we did.
- 5:36SPEAKER_06: It was uh, I cannot tell you how amazing it was.
- 5:44SPEAKER_09: You can try to tell us, yeah, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_09: It was amazing, it was chaos, it was humid, French.
- 5:52SPEAKER_09: Um, we stayed at a very dodgy place, uh, almost like very murdery, but we survived.
- 5:59SPEAKER_09: It was great.
- 6:01SPEAKER_06: Um, the normal the Bates Hotel from Psycho.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: Nice.
- 6:07SPEAKER_06: It was it was amazing.
- 6:09SPEAKER_06: I'm so glad we stayed there because we met some phenomenal people.
- 6:13SPEAKER_06: We met um on the shuttle that I hijacked for us because we stole we stole cabs, which was amazing.
- 6:21SPEAKER_06: Um, we met Francisco, who was from uh avocados, uh Mexico.
- 6:27SPEAKER_06: From Mexico.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: He was hilarious.
- 6:30SPEAKER_06: We met Jane Hanson, uh nine-time Emmy Award winner.
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: I mean, insane.
- 6:37SPEAKER_09: Oh people we did interviews on the the shuttle is like where it was at.
- 6:41SPEAKER_09: Like we made the shuttle our our daily jam.
- 6:44SPEAKER_09: That was like our spill the tea.
- 6:45SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: All right, so let's hear some of this the shuttle tea.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: Um, what is some of the like the most insightful things you've learned either at Cannes or just doing the pod that you've heard from other people?
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, you both have incredible e-commerce backgrounds, you've done it all, and there's so much changing in the industry.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: What are some like hot topics that have been popping up that you're like, this is this is so insightful, this is what I want to be hearing more about?
- 7:11SPEAKER_06: Well, look, the first thing that that everybody talked about and that everybody was talking about in can, and this is gonna be no surprise to you, was AI.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: Everything had AI flavors to it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_06: It was like it's it's AI is like the salted caramel of its uh of the genre, right?
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: It's just everywhere.
- 7:30SPEAKER_06: But but uh the thing that people realized um and were really, really happy about was that physical, that personal in real life connection.
- 7:44SPEAKER_06: There was so much, yeah.
- 7:46SPEAKER_06: Christina, you know, I I don't know.
- 7:47SPEAKER_06: I I uh for me, I felt that there was so much joy and so much so much happiness from people to actually see and speak to other people.
- 7:56SPEAKER_09: I mean, the rose, the rose didn't hurt, you know.
- 7:59SPEAKER_09: I mean a lot of rose.
- 8:03SPEAKER_09: You couldn't get water, but you could get rose, like but I you know, I and I think broader than that, they like we've had such incredible fortune to speak to amazing women, leaders, men leaders too.
- 8:17SPEAKER_09: And you know, I would say the common thread for me, like those episodes that stick out to me are the ones that we start talking about commerce and business and what's going on in the industry, and then we suddenly end up somewhere like much more human.
- 8:30SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, we talk about transformation, and then 15 later, 15 minutes later, we're talking about you know, confidence and motherhood and being underestimated and you know, the politics of being a female boss, um, and what you know, sometimes like what sacrifices that leadership story actually cost them, like personally.
- 8:51SPEAKER_09: And I feel like those are the things that stick with Jackie and I, and we like take something away from each episode.
- 8:57SPEAKER_09: And it's also great because we had a full circle moment.
- 9:00SPEAKER_09: I can that someone who knew um this amazing woman we interviewed was there, and she's like, wait a minute, she's like, was so-and-so just on your podcast?
- 9:07SPEAKER_09: She's like, she spoke to me and told me that it was the first time she was like so authentic and open up.
- 9:12SPEAKER_09: And the next time she stepped out on a she was um uh you know the opener for a big conference, and she said she just approached it so much different, like authentically, and just being her her real self.
- 9:26SPEAKER_09: And Jackie and I were like, Oh my god, goosebumps, like that's all we're here to do.
- 9:31SPEAKER_09: And so, yeah, I think those are the moments that really stick out.
- 9:37SPEAKER_06: And it's not it's not just about the your standard issue female leadership.
- 9:43SPEAKER_06: Um, how did you get here?
- 9:44SPEAKER_06: How what did you do?
- 9:45SPEAKER_06: Kind of scenario.
- 9:46SPEAKER_06: It's also how are you?
- 9:49SPEAKER_06: You know, this all of this success does not come without a cost.
- 9:55SPEAKER_06: How much did the cost cost you?
- 9:57SPEAKER_06: And and I don't think that's a conversation that people have with women.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: No, because let's be honest, the cost isn't the same for a man than it is for a woman, although it's not elaborate on that.
- 10:09SPEAKER_10: I agree a thousand percent.
- 10:11SPEAKER_10: I have two daughters.
- 10:12SPEAKER_10: I have again, I'm I'm I'm I'm with y'all.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: Oh, you're you're definitely an advocate, Scott.
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: There's there's no doubt about it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: I will give you, I will give you your flowers for that.
- 10:22SPEAKER_10: Thank you, thank you.
- 10:23SPEAKER_10: Just yeah, all right.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: Well, digging into like some of the biggest topics and stories, are there any like, you know, I know you're talking a little bit about the broader picture, but any specific guests of like that stood out to you that you were like, you know, if you're listening to this podcast right now, go to listen to this one on our SheCommerce because it's going to really enlighten you.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Is there any guests that really stand out for you?
- 10:45SPEAKER_09: All of them.
- 10:47SPEAKER_09: Yes, absolutely.
- 10:48SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_09: Um, who I mean, there's somebody that shared like their authentic like leadership journeys and just were really raw, like from our very first guest, Lauren Gruinsky at Chase.
- 10:59SPEAKER_09: She was just, she talked about you know that some of her personal struggles and you know where she's at now and how that she just never imagined it.
- 11:07SPEAKER_09: So it was it's just like a feel-good story.
- 11:09SPEAKER_09: I feel like Elizabeth Donovan, Queen Elizabeth, Hale, uh, she's just a powerhouse.
- 11:16SPEAKER_09: And hearing her talk about like, yeah, like how does she make those choices and balance it all, and you know, how she's learned to say no and like set some of those boundaries and what made her happy, you know, 10 years ago is very different from what makes her feel fulfilled and happy now, and that's okay, right?
- 11:34SPEAKER_09: To evolve.
- 11:35SPEAKER_09: Um, Jackie, any how about you?
- 11:37SPEAKER_06: Oh, no, absolutely.
- 11:38SPEAKER_06: The only I adore the absolute ever-living soil that Elizabeth walks on, apart from the fact that she and Christina ganged up on me on sequined denim jackets.
- 11:50SPEAKER_06: I mean, yay or nay.
- 11:52SPEAKER_06: Right on.
- 11:53SPEAKER_09: Yay for us, nay for Jackie.
- 11:55SPEAKER_09: Come on.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: Okay, I think it depends, it depends on the situation.
- 12:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there is a situation swag, you know, like we're we were talking swag, and and uh both of them ganged up on me, and I felt I felt very, very sort of out denimed, but but Elizabeth was Elizabeth was and is just an incredible person.
- 12:19SPEAKER_06: She's just so warm and so supportive and so inclusive, and just she's her personality is just uncontainable.
- 12:27SPEAKER_06: She's wonderful to listen to and speak to.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: But most recently, I have to say, my I I am crushing hard on this person.
- 12:37SPEAKER_06: Her name is Colette Laxton, and she is the CEO and founder, co-founder of uh the Inky List.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: It's a skin car, uh, skin skin car, skincare.
- 12:49SPEAKER_06: Um they were just on your pod.
- 12:51SPEAKER_06: This was just the other day.
- 12:53SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, you can literally, I mean, if you if you see the video of it, you can literally see Christina and me, you know, kind of falling a little bit in love as the as the episode goes on because she was so unfeasibly authentic, she was so real, and the integrity this woman has.
- 13:13SPEAKER_09: Oh wow, yeah, just and then I also Alicia Spaulding, she was kind of, I mean, talk about the she commerce part, like it was very much AI, tech, what's happening.
- 13:24SPEAKER_09: She's like an AI guru, she built the first like AI and food science at a university, she's a professor there, and but she also is a fractional CMO for a sexual wellness company, and she talked about she knows a ton and really schooled us about you know the importance of sexual wellness and kind of breaking down those taboos about talking about these things, and yes, we talked about vibrators and all of it, so that was kind of you know straddling a couple different things there, no pun intended.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, to be so new in the space and to have these amazing guests come on, we gotta know are you gonna share the secret sauce?
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: How are you really connecting and networking with all of these fabulous people?
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: It's it's great.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: We have all of these strong women in our e-commerce space.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: I think that, and I think we're sort of overtaking almost, almost.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: But tell me, like, how are you continuing to grow your network?
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: Is it going to these events like K?
- 14:28SPEAKER_09: I think it's also like we we came in and we we were very, like I said, intentional.
- 14:34SPEAKER_09: We really planned out like who we want to talk to, what order we want to talk to them, and how we would get like introductions if we didn't know them.
- 14:41SPEAKER_09: So we really do lean into our network there.
- 14:43SPEAKER_09: I also think that some of it is just the magic, like between Jackie and I, that we're we're similar enough to trust each other, but also like different enough to keep it interesting.
- 14:55SPEAKER_09: And I just think like that that chemistry um works really well.
- 15:01SPEAKER_09: And we're we have that banter and really authentic conversations that we make sure that the people that we have on are going to like work well within that, right?
- 15:13SPEAKER_09: Like the chemistry is not just about agreeing or getting being PC and having someone else answer the questions for you.
- 15:21SPEAKER_09: It's really about you know creating this safe space for people to like just be themselves and be authentic and like kind of cut through that BS.
- 15:29SPEAKER_09: And um, while we were, we had our list and we definitely sought out those, it started to flip where you know, instead of us pulling, it started to, they started to reach out to us.
- 15:40SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's been yeah, that's been incredibly humbling and and fun.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: We we had a couple of people actually, um a number of people come up, come up to us and ask us to um to uh to have people on the podcast.
- 15:56SPEAKER_06: And we're sitting there going, wait, and we've and at first we're like, you know, when we got the first one, we're like, oh, I bet they're probably like maybe you know a junior and they want to be on a podcast for for practice and stuff.
- 16:09SPEAKER_06: And we're new, we're little, you know, understandable.
- 16:12SPEAKER_06: And we look at at it, and it's like it, it's like we're you're looking at two presidents of of regions of this huge multinational organization.
- 16:20SPEAKER_06: We're like, what?
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: And then there's a CEO, and then there's uh there's another CEO, and we're just sitting there going, Wait, this is great, let's keep going.
- 16:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, listening to us.
- 16:31SPEAKER_09: What the hell is that now?
- 16:33SPEAKER_09: We have like this long list, and uh, you know, oh my gosh.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: All right, so let's switch gears a little bit here.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: I would love to know what is the hottest topic in e-commerce right now that you guys are talking about for those who haven't listened to your show.
- 16:50SPEAKER_05: Like, what's the buzz in e-commerce?
- 16:52SPEAKER_05: What should we be talking about?
- 16:55SPEAKER_05: Other than AI.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: I know we've said AI, but like what what else?
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: There's there's more.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: I really I really liked I listened to your show with Dollar General and is it Milo Mira?
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: Milo T.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: And it was about the Omni Channel and how the brand was working with Dollar General and their media.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and I thought that was really insightful.
- 17:18SPEAKER_04: And it's it's not to do with AI, it's really about connection with people.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: And I thought you guys did a fantastic job with that, Pa.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: Do you mind sharing a little bit about it?
- 17:30SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and and you know, they are so similar in terms of the their history and roots.
- 17:34SPEAKER_09: And I think what they did was very much like a test and learn approach and very iterative to be um, you know, very open about what's working, what's not, and to really make it about that joint value creation.
- 17:48SPEAKER_09: Like it wasn't just about, you know, them paying into a retail media program as part of a JVP because they had to spend and then kind of working in a black box and getting results at the end.
- 17:59SPEAKER_09: No, it was very much like, hey, this is how this is something we want to do within Dollar General.
- 18:05SPEAKER_09: We feel like you're a good fit.
- 18:06SPEAKER_09: And then Milos T coming in saying, great, like we're gonna learn together and do this as a partnership.
- 18:13SPEAKER_09: And I think those are the, you know, the the best um alignment between like a retailer and a manufacturer, right?
- 18:21SPEAKER_09: Or and even a supplier, like bringing that trifecta together to make sure that it's a triple win.
- 18:26SPEAKER_09: And we talk about that a lot.
- 18:28SPEAKER_09: Um, we don't see people talk about that a lot, but I think they really showcased how it works in action.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: I think the big thing about the DG and Milo um collab is that I mean it's been going on for a while, but it's also that Dollar General is just such a people and um it's such a people-oriented organization.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: They build relationships with the people, they don't get brands, they build relationships with people.
- 18:58SPEAKER_06: And the brand thing just happens to be a byproduct of it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_06: And you can see that, you know, from speaking to Austin, from uh with um uh Natalie, with it was it was just it's a beautiful thing, the way that they they speak with people.
- 19:12SPEAKER_06: There's so much humility and so much, but also so much excitement to try new things and to to partnership with people.
- 19:20SPEAKER_06: And that is what and and at the end of the day, you can have the AI, you can have the agentic, uh, you can have all these cool technology things, but at the end of the day, people vibe best with people, and DG does that so beautifully and so well.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: And they're one of the fastest growing brick and mortar uh retailers as well.
- 19:42SPEAKER_05: They they have this whole strategy of you know, let's find a food desert, let's find a retail desert, and boy, they just I mean, they have the whole model just dialed in.
- 19:53SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah.
- 19:54SPEAKER_09: The one-stop shop, yeah, in those areas.
- 19:57SPEAKER_09: Um, and I also think while everyone's talking about AI, there's been a few conversations we've had now, whether that's with um Julie Talbot from Lanzanov, um, even with Colette last week from the Inkey list, about you know, where AI cannot replace humans and like really being clear about some of those boundaries and um the use of AI in customer service, but then having almost like a secondary community where that is very much about those people-to-people relationships and really um active listening to what your consumer wants and knowing when it is not appropriate to have you know a robot or a machine, a computer um replacing a human.
- 20:43SPEAKER_10: I think exactly hold on here.
- 20:48SPEAKER_10: First of all, I just want to thank you two because one of the things when Summer and I five and a half years ago wanted to do this is one of the frustrations was that there's just not enough women's voices heard.
- 21:01SPEAKER_10: Period.
- 21:02SPEAKER_10: I could just stop there.
- 21:04SPEAKER_10: At the time we started podcasting in the industry again, Peter and Shree had started this thing, and there's a bunch of others, and there's a lot of OGs and before and what have you.
- 21:12SPEAKER_10: But uh thank you.
- 21:14SPEAKER_10: Thank you for bringing these incredibly talented, brilliant voices to the front of the of the of the space and everything else.
- 21:23SPEAKER_10: And so we hope they get more speakers, we hope they get in more con uh conferences and on more stages and everything else.
- 21:30SPEAKER_10: I'm trying to get Haley and Summer on in more stages, but thank you for that.
- 21:34SPEAKER_10: We're gonna take a very quick break.
- 21:35SPEAKER_10: I just wanted to say that.
- 21:36SPEAKER_10: Number one.
- 21:37SPEAKER_10: Number two, where are we with women in leadership?
- 21:41SPEAKER_10: You guys have a you know, spill the teeth and you guys go through and you shout out these great accomplishments and all these other things, and and all the things.
- 21:50SPEAKER_10: So we're gonna take a break.
- 21:50SPEAKER_10: We come back.
- 21:51SPEAKER_10: I wanna, you know, from your guys' perspective and doing the show, and you guys are badasses yourself in your own spaces, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: This is Jamie Clapper, community and content manager, host of Unpacking the Digital Shelf B2B edition, and you are listening to Always Off Brand Podcast.
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: All right, we are back with Jackie and Christina from SheCommerce.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: And before we took the break, Scott hinted that we were gonna talk about like where are women at today, especially when it comes to the e-commerce industry.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: And it got me reminiscing, which you may have heard on older shows of Always Off Brand, but when I was coming up in this industry, it was all about the dudes, and it was a dude party, and you had to adjust.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: The CEO was taking the sales team out to strip clubs.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: One of my coworkers was throwing ice chips down, another coworker's top and just getting his hand slapped.
- 22:49SPEAKER_04: Us women had to really bite our tongues and just try to get through the day.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: And I feel like that has changed a lot, but maybe it hasn't.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: What are what are you seeing, Jackie and Christina?
- 23:01SPEAKER_06: Well, yes and no.
- 23:03SPEAKER_06: It's I think it's just a little more subtle now.
- 23:06SPEAKER_06: It's a little more PC, but it's the same thing.
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: You have the masters, right?
- 23:10SPEAKER_06: Golf.
- 23:11SPEAKER_06: Now, me personally, I like everything that I do with speed, so golf is not my thing.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: A lot of my girlfriends.
- 23:21SPEAKER_10: It's fair.
- 23:21SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it's very fair.
- 23:24SPEAKER_10: Are you F1?
- 23:24SPEAKER_10: You're more F1 style.
- 23:26SPEAKER_06: I totally go to F1.
- 23:28unknown: Totally.
- 23:28SPEAKER_09: I would try to NASCAR, yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_06: Um, but but um you have a number of my girlfriends who work for you know tech companies and other agencies, they go to the masters because that's where a lot of their clients are, and a lot of their clients are male.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: You also have you know, um some amazing um female communities and leaders in female communities, like like the female quotient, they're at masters.
- 23:53SPEAKER_06: Now, is it a case of they're the masters because um golf is uh getting to be a lot more female-centric, or is it because we're trying to break down the barrier to women having the conversations with the men who are at the masters?
- 24:08SPEAKER_09: Yes, that I think it's the latter there, Jackie.
- 24:11SPEAKER_09: And I I think you know, over the history shows we've had to lean into male-dominated or male preferred um bonding activities like that, just to not be left out of the conversation.
- 24:24SPEAKER_09: And we're we were chatting about it, right?
- 24:26SPEAKER_09: Like, why can't that be like a Manny Penny session or you know, a cooking class, or like whatever it is that or go out dancing?
- 24:34SPEAKER_09: Let's, you know, those are things that maybe are more women um oriented that we could also say, hey, this is where we're gonna do business.
- 24:42SPEAKER_09: So you either join us or you're left out of the conversation.
- 24:45SPEAKER_09: But you know, I think things have evolved.
- 24:47SPEAKER_09: We talk about this a lot, like women are definitely better represented.
- 24:51SPEAKER_09: Um, but are they equally influential?
- 24:54SPEAKER_09: I think those are two different things, and that's a much harder question.
- 24:57SPEAKER_09: And I think it's not just about like how many women are in a room, or are we like checking our you know, DNI boxes?
- 25:05SPEAKER_09: Um, but it's about like, okay, well, who's actually running the show, who's making those decisions, who's getting sponsored versus just having mentors, who gets talked about when they're not in the room.
- 25:16SPEAKER_09: And, you know, I think representation at those lower levels, like mid entry and mid is very different from representation at the most senior levels, where like you know, capital and power and strategies are being decided.
- 25:33SPEAKER_09: And so we always say this like a seat at the table is not the same thing as power at the table.
- 25:38SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 25:39SPEAKER_06: Oh, I love that saying that's so true.
- 25:42SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 25:42SPEAKER_09: I mean, you can have the seat at the table, but if you have no authority, if you're just there as a mascot or taking notes, you know, like we don't need women invited to the room to just take notes.
- 25:53SPEAKER_09: And if you're not a seat, we say, bring your own seat, like it's fine.
- 25:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've been at those tables and it's wildly uncomfortable because you know that you you know more than maybe what's being discussed, you have something to add, you have more context, etc., or experience in the subject, and you just can't get a word in edgewise, and it's wildly frustrating.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: And then you're right, I think we mentioned it earlier.
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: This imposter syndrome kind of sets in.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: It's like, oh, well, do I deserve to be here?
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: Should I be here?
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: And then you start questioning yourself.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: You're like, no, wait, I know this, like, I deserve this.
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: I've worked to get here.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:29SPEAKER_10: That's my grievance.
- 26:30SPEAKER_10: That's my grievance.
- 26:31SPEAKER_10: It's just like you're sitting around, you know that these okay, let's just say they're people, okay.
- 26:36SPEAKER_10: Take gender out of it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_10: These are people that are 10 times smarter, they have a higher emotional IQ, they're better with people, they understand they they they could leaps and bounds, and yet they're I don't know, they're limited in some stupid way, and so that just drives me crazy.
- 26:53SPEAKER_10: It's all bullshit.
- 26:54SPEAKER_09: It is bullshit.
- 26:56SPEAKER_09: And in CPG, nine times out of 10, we're your consumer, right?
- 27:00SPEAKER_09: Like we are the shopper, we're the making the household decisions and influencing all that, managing the wallet, etc.
- 27:09SPEAKER_09: So, you know, and I do feel like what you're just kind of like this double dutch scheme.
- 27:13SPEAKER_09: Like, when can I jump in?
- 27:14SPEAKER_09: When can I jump in?
- 27:14SPEAKER_09: And then sometimes you jump in and say something, and someone, uh maybe a male in the room says it louder and puts their own spin on it two minutes later, and they're like, Oh yeah, like, wait a minute, like I just said that.
- 27:26SPEAKER_09: So it you know, it's that happen.
- 27:29SPEAKER_10: How many, how about how many mansplaining or basically?
- 27:33SPEAKER_09: I hate that.
- 27:34SPEAKER_09: Oh my god, that's the worst.
- 27:36SPEAKER_06: Oh I've started I've started doing that.
- 27:38SPEAKER_06: Oh, thank you for elaborating on my point.
- 27:41SPEAKER_06: I appreciate that.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna take that.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: What a great one, Jackie.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: Gotta write that down.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: Write that down too.
- 27:51SPEAKER_10: Everyone's writing.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: But let's be but let's be real.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: It has gotten a little better.
- 27:55SPEAKER_04: And honestly, thank you to the Me Too movement because it really shook a lot of businesses up and it woke up a lot of us women who were like, just like, I just gotta get through this.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: This guy's gonna leave at some point, like he'll be gone and I'll be able to like make my impact.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: To being like, no, you can't do this.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: And that's been fantastic over the last six, seven years because now we're seeing a lot of incredible women doing amazing things.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: Um, where do you think it's going next?
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Like, we're seeing some, you know, I shared that when I first started at my company, the whole senior level team was was women, which is one of the reasons I wanted to work there.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: My first thought was, hey, I won't be sexually harassed.
- 28:34SPEAKER_04: That's awful, but it was just what I thought.
- 28:36SPEAKER_10: I was like, what a bar to set.
- 28:38SPEAKER_10: What a bar to set.
- 28:40SPEAKER_09: The things that we have to worry about, though, right?
- 28:42SPEAKER_09: The things that yeah are on our mind.
- 28:45SPEAKER_09: Oh my goodness, yes.
- 28:47SPEAKER_09: But yeah, I think where is it going next?
- 28:49SPEAKER_09: I I think it is about that upper, you know, level of um influence and power.
- 28:55SPEAKER_09: And I also think it is about uh more women also supporting other women, right?
- 29:01SPEAKER_09: And you know, we talk about this like creating a sisterhood and all that, and like uh women, it it's not just feminism though, that's not what we're saying, or like checking a box.
- 29:13SPEAKER_09: It's really about um making those introductions, recommending someone, having the action behind the words, saying her name when she's not in the room, right?
- 29:21SPEAKER_09: What telling, sharing salary information so we can, you know, is there louder, say that louder, sharing salary information.
- 29:31SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's not some big secret.
- 29:32SPEAKER_09: I don't understand.
- 29:34SPEAKER_09: But it, I mean, it is, and like even the can, like the slate of candidates in succession planning, like how many of those are women actually on?
- 29:44SPEAKER_09: And how are we those women that do have the power, how are we using it to make that that path wider for others, right?
- 29:50SPEAKER_09: And build something that is sustainable for the next generation.
- 29:54SPEAKER_09: I think that's what I want to see even more of.
- 29:57SPEAKER_06: And I think and I think that that mindset has changed too.
- 30:00SPEAKER_06: So back in the back in the olden days, and I say olden days because I am from that era, um, I remember, you know, I was always, I've always been a girl's girl.
- 30:11SPEAKER_06: Um, but I was also told, oh, look after number one, which is yourself.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Whereas I'm very much look after everybody in the team where we're we're a team.
- 30:23SPEAKER_06: But there were far more women who were happy to step on you to get to where they wanted to go, because everyone was brought up to believe that that's the way you succeed.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: And when you're such a minority in this shark tank, yeah, you have to the only way you can go up, and again, a lot of the times you're going up because um you want to do better for your family, you want to progress, you want to see your career um expand.
- 30:56SPEAKER_06: The only way to do it was to be, and pardon the language, a total bitch and not be part of the sisterhood.
- 31:03SPEAKER_06: That has changed so much in my time from when I first started working to now.
- 31:11SPEAKER_06: Um, and all my best uh support experiences, um, a lot of them do have men, but some of the most beautiful ones have been women who broke that mold and said, you know what, I'm gonna take you with me.
- 31:24SPEAKER_06: You come with me, you do this.
- 31:25SPEAKER_06: Let me make sure you you get um you get into this room.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the rise of you as a person doesn't have to come at the cost of me going lower, right?
- 31:35SPEAKER_06: But I see exactly.
- 31:37SPEAKER_06: But some of the worst experience I've had have also been at women pushing me to the background because yeah, they don't want the competition, right?
- 31:48SPEAKER_09: For women, it gets very competitive and this rival rivalry happens, and then you're like cutting each other down.
- 31:54SPEAKER_09: I'm like, don't you see we're just we're we're hurting everybody by acting this way, right?
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: And so yeah, I haven't experienced an uplifting supportive woman in my workplace yet.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: I've had men that have supported my career way more than women have.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: I actually feel particular positions, so I'm still bitter about it.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: And I I hear all these amazing stories and I know it exists, but but I've had men prop me up way more than women.
- 32:26SPEAKER_04: I think she's talking to you, Scott.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, Scott and Jerry Dodge, and there was a uh the VP of sales that I was with before at my CPG company that I was working with.
- 32:37SPEAKER_05: Like all these men are fantastic and supportive, and the women quite the opposite, and it's so frustrating.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: So it's it still does exist, sadly.
- 32:46SPEAKER_05: But I do I do agree that it does, you know, it does get better.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: It does exist, but I you know you're gonna be part of our sisterhood, and we're gonna probably be.
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, and this podcast is kind of a siloed, you know, thing.
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: Uh every woman in here is amazing, but it's like actual workplace, like where we go and function on a daily basis, it's it's still like cutthroat.
- 33:09SPEAKER_10: On this, on this train, uh, Christina or I don't know, Jackie, both of you.
- 33:14SPEAKER_10: Where I would love to see more activity and we get more female brains in is boardrooms on boards.
- 33:22SPEAKER_10: Because boards are so interesting to me having exposure to them and what have you.
- 33:31SPEAKER_10: It's just that you know, what how are we doing there?
- 33:34SPEAKER_10: Because every CEO of certain companies, right?
- 33:37SPEAKER_10: Oh, they it's a great excuse.
- 33:38SPEAKER_10: It's right, well, the board wants us, the board, the board, the board.
- 33:42SPEAKER_10: I mean, but but are is it still just a dude fest out there?
- 33:45SPEAKER_10: Again, I'm not as in tune with I'm not checking boards all the time, but I mean, how are we doing there?
- 33:51SPEAKER_10: Because I think that is C-suite, of course, getting leadership positions, obviously, way ton of work to do there.
- 33:57SPEAKER_10: Number one, CEOs, absolutely, but then where are we going on boards?
- 34:02SPEAKER_10: Boards have unbelievable control in the world.
- 34:04SPEAKER_08: Oh, that's controlling power.
- 34:07SPEAKER_06: We have we have so many thoughts, so many.
- 34:12SPEAKER_06: We we in fact, um, we'll I'll I'll start with the fact that we had um several episodes ago, we interviewed uh the Women on Boards project with um Kirsten and Cassie, and they were phenomenal.
- 34:25SPEAKER_06: And and the the statement that they made is basically swagworthy, and that is there isn't a supply problem for women to go onto boards, there is a demand problem.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: Now, myself, I have been asked five times this year alone if I wanted to be on a board.
- 34:49SPEAKER_06: Yes, absolutely.
- 34:50SPEAKER_06: Oh, wonderful, Miss Donofsky.
- 34:53SPEAKER_06: How about you join our board readiness program to so that you can get ready to be on a board?
- 35:00SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, um, and I'm gonna add, you have to pay.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: You have to pay to become parts of these other targeting thousands of dollars, you know.
- 35:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I'm like, wait, wait, wait, how many how many men have gone through this program?
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: Oh, oh no, uh no, we've had some men.
- 35:18SPEAKER_06: How many men have gone through this program?
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: And it's not about men or women, Miss Dinofsky.
- 35:23SPEAKER_06: I'm like, oh yes, I think it is, sweet cheeks.
- 35:26SPEAKER_06: I don't need sweet cheeks, sweet cheeks.
- 35:29SPEAKER_06: I don't need preparation to be in a board.
- 35:32SPEAKER_06: I have done operations, I've done sales, I've done management, I've done clients.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: I've Becky, you've been preparing it for 30 years.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's ready.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 35:43SPEAKER_06: Totally right.
- 35:44SPEAKER_06: I have I have twins, I have a husband.
- 35:47SPEAKER_06: I mean, he needs board management, right?
- 35:50SPEAKER_06: He has me, he has me, so yeah, all the things, but but and but but the thing is, women have got to uh do all this additional uh practice, uh have to learn all these additional things before they can be on a board.
- 36:07SPEAKER_06: Bullshit.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: And just women, I totally agree.
- 36:12SPEAKER_09: No, and Scotty, like to your question, the representation is very low, it is increasing, but still very low.
- 36:19SPEAKER_09: Representation in minorities, even lower.
- 36:21SPEAKER_09: And then when you think rep paid though, paid board seats are different from you know any board seat, that's also highly um over-indexed to men versus women.
- 36:32SPEAKER_09: Women will take on it as you know, advisors and pro bono and you know, free advisors and sit on boards at volunteering, but they're not getting paid, and that's also you know, uh uh quality and making sure that we're giving those opportunities to women as well because they're that they deserve it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, listen, I think we should all band together and create something that creates more opportunities for women to be involved in these seats.
- 37:01SPEAKER_05: Do it with all of us that could figure it out.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: That's our million dollar idea, you guys.
- 37:05SPEAKER_10: Well, we don't really have a board for always off brand.
- 37:08SPEAKER_10: Maybe this is our new board.
- 37:10SPEAKER_09: Yes, I love it.
- 37:13SPEAKER_09: I love it.
- 37:14SPEAKER_09: The problem is female, 20% male.
- 37:17SPEAKER_09: Great.
- 37:18SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: This is how I was just pulling up the stats just to just to you know ground ourselves.
- 37:24SPEAKER_08: Fact check.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: Wow, fortune 500 CEOs today, 89 are male.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: What's interesting to me though, left CEO job within two years of appointment, 24 of the women left their their role versus the 10 of men.
- 37:41SPEAKER_10: Interesting.
- 37:42SPEAKER_06: And you know, here's what I think for you, Summer.
- 37:45SPEAKER_06: The the women who left the CEO position, were they there as a placeholder when the company was going through a tough time?
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: And so they became the scapegoat?
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Bozeman St.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: John, real housewives of Beverly Hills.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: She talks about this a lot.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: She brought in for less than two years to fix a problem or to correct something, and then she's off.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: And that's what they they just these short little spurts.
- 38:12SPEAKER_09: I mean, we are good fixers and problem solvers, way better than men.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: Listen to this.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: I'm not done.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: I have your stat.
- 38:19SPEAKER_04: I have your stat, Jackie.
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: Appointed when company was already struggling, slash in a crisis.
- 38:26SPEAKER_04: 22% of men, 42% of women.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: Wow, there you go.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: Of course, 42% of women, and then they're like, Well, but they're leaving in the first two years.
- 38:37SPEAKER_04: Well, no shit.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: I hope they're leaving with$10 million in their yeah, they're like, bye, solve your problem, Max.
- 38:44SPEAKER_10: But this gets back to my other thing.
- 38:46SPEAKER_10: Nine times out of 10, when CEOs leave, if they're asked to leave, it's because the board directs it too.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: Yes, yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: And the board is just a bunch of bros sitting around the table.
- 38:56SPEAKER_10: Yeah, you can't play golf.
- 38:59SPEAKER_10: What's that?
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: They're either playing golf or they're all going to strip clubs.
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 39:05SPEAKER_10: I mean, again, I enjoy golf.
- 39:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah, but you're not on you're not on the brill.
- 39:11SPEAKER_09: I'll be the caddy.
- 39:12SPEAKER_09: I'll like drive the car and drink and like have a great time.
- 39:15SPEAKER_09: But I don't drive the beer car.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: My my well, careful.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: My husband does entice me to go golfing with him, and he's like, Look, I got this whole sleeve of ciders for you.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 39:28SPEAKER_09: That would incentivize me too.
- 39:30SPEAKER_06: There with you.
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: I'll tell you what incentivizes me about golf is the cat is driving the caddy because I don't have a license.
- 39:37SPEAKER_06: And uh I never got around to getting my license because I grew up in Dubai and you know, drivers and you know, fancy privilege and stuff like that.
- 39:45SPEAKER_06: But uh let's let's park that for the moment.
- 39:48SPEAKER_06: Um, but the caddy, I just love the idea of just going crazy on a golf crane in a caddy.
- 39:54SPEAKER_09: Um, this is a safety message.
- 39:56SPEAKER_09: Let's not let Jackie do that without a license.
- 39:59SPEAKER_10: Well, first of all, I've driven with summer jubileer.
- 40:02SPEAKER_10: I I I am scared for anyone in her cart that out there.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Listen, for my 40th.
- 40:10SPEAKER_06: You're you and me with we're the same sort of spirit animal.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: So for my 40th birthday, my husband took me to rally car racing school.
- 40:16SPEAKER_04: That's that's how I like to drive.
- 40:19SPEAKER_06: Yes, oh my god, yes.
- 40:22SPEAKER_06: Hey, you should totally come with us to Can next year, and we should definitely hire the mopeds and then shop some.
- 40:27SPEAKER_09: Oh, that's what we're gonna do.
- 40:28SPEAKER_09: I was gonna drive, Jackie was gonna be on the back seat, but little did we know that everyone else had that idea too, apparently.
- 40:34SPEAKER_09: We waited too long to get our motorcycles, but anyways, next year.
- 40:41SPEAKER_10: Well, all right.
- 40:42SPEAKER_10: Are you guys ready to play a game?
- 40:43SPEAKER_10: We try to do here.
- 40:45SPEAKER_10: We do we don't try, we do it.
- 40:46SPEAKER_10: A little game show that's sweeping the globe.
- 40:49SPEAKER_10: It's it's getting in, it's on a sixth year.
- 40:50SPEAKER_10: It's called What's That Keyword?
- 40:52SPEAKER_10: Oh, but before we do that, I just thank you, thank you, thank you for coming on.

- 41:57SPEAKER_02: It's time for what that keyword.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: Here's your host, Haley on the news.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: Oh, Christina and Jackie stuck around to play.
- 42:09SPEAKER_05: What's that keyword?
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Y'all are new here, so I'm gonna lay down the rules.
- 42:14SPEAKER_05: I'm going to give you a product that is sold on Amazon.com.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: And you have to guess the keyword that was typed in to purchase this product.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: So, hey, what did the customer type in to buy this product?
- 42:26SPEAKER_05: And it can be a little outside the box sometimes.
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: So put your creative caps on.
- 42:31SPEAKER_05: It's not necessarily a relative hint or for this particular.
- 42:36SPEAKER_10: You never know.
- 42:37SPEAKER_10: You're hinting.
- 42:38SPEAKER_05: You never know.
- 42:40SPEAKER_05: Your first product, and I've used this at least three times in the past couple weeks.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: Ooh, is a car jumper box.
- 42:47SPEAKER_05: You know, like the little rechargeable rechargeable dead, dead battery.
- 42:52SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: No, you're wrong.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: Jackie! Ooh.
- 42:56SPEAKER_05: Uh jumper cable.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: Hmm, no.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: Summer Scott, what you got?
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: Car restarter.
- 43:04SPEAKER_05: Ooh, no.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: Statio.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Jump my rig.
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: I was looking for jump spark.
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: Apparently.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: It's like a very common term.
- 43:20SPEAKER_06: Um, I would I would like to have that uh my uh my answer sort of uh not considered because I don't have a license.
- 43:28SPEAKER_08: So it doesn't matter, Daddy.
- 43:32SPEAKER_06: I can drive more I can drive a car illegally, but I don't have a license, so I feel not I'm not.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: But you ride in you ride in cars.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: So excuse me, excuse me.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: Listen, I've been using my jump box on the freaking lawnmower for the past few weeks.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: I think we need a new lawnmower battery, so anyways.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: Now you've got the hang of it.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna give you another one here.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: We got this, ladies.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: Beard trimmer.
- 43:58SPEAKER_07: Oh.
- 43:59SPEAKER_05: We have a Electric, cordless, rechargeable beard trimmer or a hair trimmer, whatever.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: Doesn't have to be man specific.
- 44:10SPEAKER_09: Manscaping tools.
- 44:13SPEAKER_09: What do you say?
- 44:14SPEAKER_09: Did you say the same thing?
- 44:15SPEAKER_09: Oh my nearly.
- 44:16SPEAKER_09: I mean, we're practically related.
- 44:19SPEAKER_10: Can you repeat them, please?
- 44:20SPEAKER_06: Manscaping?
- 44:22SPEAKER_06: I said beardscaping.
- 44:24SPEAKER_06: Ooh.
- 44:25SPEAKER_06: I'm going with bush and trimmer.
- 44:30SPEAKER_10: Wait, was that right?
- 44:31SPEAKER_10: I shouldn't have buzzed your Scott.
- 44:36SPEAKER_10: Oh god.
- 44:37SPEAKER_09: Let's get the point of summer, because I mean, that was great.
- 44:40SPEAKER_10: That was.
- 44:41SPEAKER_09: Hold on.
- 44:43SPEAKER_10: Do I need yes?
- 44:45SPEAKER_10: Beard trimmer?
- 44:46SPEAKER_10: Um.
- 44:48SPEAKER_10: I don't know.
- 44:49SPEAKER_10: Back to school beard.
- 44:50SPEAKER_10: I'm trying to.
- 44:51SPEAKER_10: I I'm so bad at this game.
- 44:53SPEAKER_10: It's so terrible.
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: I was looking for ball trimmer.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: I was close.
- 45:04SPEAKER_05: We're so close, Summer.
- 45:05SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna try to keep a straight face.
- 45:07SPEAKER_05: Can we give you a half a point for that today?
- 45:09SPEAKER_05: Because I think you deserve it.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: You deserve it.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: Like now now men are now men are getting Botox there.
- 45:21SPEAKER_04: Wait, they're getting Botox in their balls?
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: On their balls, yeah.
- 45:26SPEAKER_06: Um isn't that the whole point of balls?
- 45:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just we're gonna be able to do it.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: If us women are getting implants and lips, then we can do their part, okay?
- 45:39SPEAKER_09: They should wear a bra so they don't sag, like a ball bra?
- 45:42SPEAKER_09: That was on that.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: Or like the sacks underwear have like the little supports.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: Are you feeling underserved, Scott?
- 45:54SPEAKER_10: Do you think that's no?
- 45:55SPEAKER_10: I think this is great.
- 45:56SPEAKER_10: Keep this going.
- 45:57SPEAKER_10: This is different.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: I meant your ball feeling underserved.
- 46:00SPEAKER_10: You know, there's only a couple things that are undefeated.
- 46:03SPEAKER_10: Gravity is undefeated.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: Gravity is undefeated, and so is profit.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: That was amazing, gals.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: Thanks for sticking around.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: We'll be right back with the news.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: Entertaining I'm Ross Derringer, CEO and founder of Scraply.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: You're listening to Always Off Brand.
- 46:27SPEAKER_07: Always off brand.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: Hit play, stay close, let the good scuff turn.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Well, that's all been fun and games.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: But it's that time, the time America has been waiting for.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: It's time for the news.
- 46:44SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: So Prime Day is now four days.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: We've got other retailers mimicking the four-day into like holy smokes, Walmart did what?
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: Like a six-day event during Prime Days in June.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: It is talk about deal fatigue, but the numbers aren't lying.
- 47:03SPEAKER_05: We had a$26.4 billion in online spend that in June.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: And here's the thing: that was only the June 23rd through 26th.
- 47:17SPEAKER_05: $26.4 billion in online sales.
- 47:21SPEAKER_05: And that's a nine three.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: This is online sales.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: This is revenue.
- 47:27SPEAKER_05: So yeah, what's ad spend summer?
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: It's probably, I don't know, at least 15% of that.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Um, maybe even more.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: But yeah, so that's a almost nine and a half percent increase year over year.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: Holy smokes.
- 47:40SPEAKER_05: Okay, electronics, apparel, toys, they're all fighting for the top three spots here in spend levels.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: Mobile accounted for 54%.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: These numbers are changing so quickly.
- 47:53SPEAKER_05: And it's like we're evolving somewhere.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Like when you create your media plans and I create my strategies and things for brands, like, holy smokes.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: These are numbers that we now have to one anniversary.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: And two, keep up with like how can we keep up with this demand as it's like vastly changing, vastly increasing?
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: I just I don't know.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: I would love to just kind of chit-chat here about what do you think of deal fatigue?
- 48:25SPEAKER_05: And do you think prime day might be in September?
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: So they have a quarterly event now.
- 48:29SPEAKER_05: Like, what are we going to do as strategists to keep up with this?
- 48:35SPEAKER_06: I have a question for you.
- 48:36SPEAKER_06: Oh, yes.
- 48:38SPEAKER_06: Like$115 gazillion dollars were uh in revenue in June over those four days, right?
- 48:45SPEAKER_06: But yeah, do you think you would still get that if they did it down to two?
- 48:49SPEAKER_06: Do you think that they would have doubled it, or maybe not doubled it?
- 48:53SPEAKER_06: That's that's a lot, but maybe added another 25% to that because two days you create that sense of urgency and you're like, oh my god, oh my god, I need to do this.
- 49:03SPEAKER_06: Whereas after a while, you're just like, Oh, Jesus.
- 49:07SPEAKER_05: No, I totally agree with you.
- 49:08SPEAKER_05: I think that it's an Amazon revenue play because we as advertisers and marketers are spending, you know, double the money because it's double the time of the event, and that's where Amazon makes their money.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: Scott, you just did the earnings call.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: What was their what was their media revenue or their advertising revenue?
- 49:27SPEAKER_10: Avenue advertising was up 26%.
- 49:30SPEAKER_10: So quarter over quarter.
- 49:32SPEAKER_10: But again, this is all see, and I did a whole prime day meh recap because take all these big numbers.
- 49:39SPEAKER_10: First of all, Amazon still hasn't reported out, even on their earnings call.
- 49:42SPEAKER_10: All he said, all Andrew said, Andrew Jassy, because we're tight.
- 49:45SPEAKER_10: I call him Andrew, not Andy.
- 49:47SPEAKER_10: He just said, We're pleased with customer reaction to Prime Day.
- 49:50SPEAKER_10: That's all they said.
- 49:51SPEAKER_10: Numerator, stack line, everybody else, they were down seven percent, traffic was down 10.
- 49:58SPEAKER_10: As we've said on this show a hundred times, Prime Day is will never be the same.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: No, and adult customer, I am not pleased with the Prime Day events.
- 50:08SPEAKER_09: I don't even think the deals are that great.
- 50:10SPEAKER_09: And then you know, you have then you have Black Friday, you have 1111, you have all these made up, you know, promotional periods.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: I love that you just called that 1111.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: I call it turkey freaking 25 because I feel like it lasts forever.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: But it just turned into the gap, you know, you don't find full price at the gap, and now you have to do that.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Everything's on price at Amazon.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: And you know, these these sellers and retailers, their their margins are so compressed as it is with the current just status of the world.
- 50:43SPEAKER_05: And when you layer in promo funding or increased CPCs, they can't afford that discount that we used to see historically.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: They can't afford the 40% off.
- 50:54SPEAKER_05: They're maybe getting 15% off because that's all that the margin you know allows for.
- 50:59SPEAKER_06: So 100%, Haley, 100%.
- 51:02SPEAKER_05: And it's so another interesting point here is the buy now pay later.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: Obviously, it's available on Amazon, Target, Walmart.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: Everybody's doing it now.
- 51:13SPEAKER_05: And it has accounted for seven percent of online orders.
- 51:19SPEAKER_05: That's$2.1 billion of that$26 billion that I just mentioned above is being used or being converted in buy now, pay later, which now tells us that the consumer can't afford the sale either, but they're still participating.
- 51:37SPEAKER_05: We're driving up that debt.
- 51:40SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 51:41SPEAKER_05: No kidding.
- 51:42SPEAKER_10: The other thing is there's inflationary costs that have to go in, right?
- 51:46SPEAKER_10: So the retails are high.
- 51:47SPEAKER_10: We we talk about it all the time.
- 51:48SPEAKER_10: I mean, every client I have, all these things, they're they're since literally since 21 and 22, we've incrementally increased our retails to also compensate and and and mitigate the risk because of all the costs, right?
- 52:02SPEAKER_10: All these different costs to do it.
- 52:04SPEAKER_10: So I I just think there's there's a little bit of of I don't know, a little cold water in a lot of those numbers at the same time.
- 52:10SPEAKER_10: At the same time, the the crazy thing of those numbers is e-commerce is growing at an unbelievable pace over over retail.
- 52:18SPEAKER_10: It's now 22 to 23 percent of total core retail, not including cars and restaurants and oil and gas.
- 52:25SPEAKER_10: That's remarkable.
- 52:26SPEAKER_10: As I've been around, it used to be 8%, then covet put it on unbelievable blast, and now it's the law of large numbers.
- 52:35SPEAKER_10: So we're just again, every little incremental growth is great.
- 52:38SPEAKER_10: So I yeah, it was a big deal.
- 52:40SPEAKER_10: Now, again, have fun anniversarying it uh next year.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: No shit.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: I think it it's it's all going back to what you always say.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: Yes, I'm getting giving you this is flowers twice in one pot.
- 52:56SPEAKER_10: What is wrong?
- 52:56SPEAKER_10: Are you okay?
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: Are you feeling maybe I'm feeling a little sentimental?
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: She's just buttering you up for the date.
- 53:04SPEAKER_04: I'm hoping you show.
- 53:06SPEAKER_04: Right, that's what I'm saying.
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: Um, it's gonna be about profit and your leaders, you have to have leaders at a company that say that can stand up and say, yes, we can push more sales, but at what cost?
- 53:20SPEAKER_04: And I'm willing to take a step down in sales if it means our profitability stays stays or goes up.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: But then you have to show the board why you didn't hit that forecast because you had to anniversary the last event, which may have happened in a different month.
- 53:38SPEAKER_05: That's true, and so then you've got the board of dudes sitting around holding you accountable for a budget that you did not meet.
- 53:47SPEAKER_05: So, thus is the double-edged sword of that conversation.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: I don't want to end on a negative note.
- 53:54SPEAKER_05: I feel like that was negative.
- 53:55SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, you guys, that's just the reality of it, and it's it's so challenging as a brand, as a retailer in our ever-growing space.
- 54:04SPEAKER_05: But you know what?
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: Maybe they'll move it back to May, Haley.
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: And then fuck that.
- 54:14SPEAKER_09: Not on our watch.
- 54:15SPEAKER_05: All right, everybody.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much for your time today.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: This was fabulous.
