- 0:38Speaker 1: on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on September twenty sixth, twenty

- 1:14Speaker 1: You might just hear email read in a future listener
- 1:17Speaker 1: mail bag episode. We are going to jump right in
- 1:23Speaker 1: with a synopsis of One Summer. Jack takes his son
- 1:28Speaker 1: and daughter to his late wife's beachside hometown, hoping to
- 1:32Speaker 1: heal and become closer. The summer brings visions of the
- 1:36Speaker 1: past that could forge a new path forward. When Summer
- 1:42Speaker 1: was directed by Arc Nuey, whose previous directing credits include
- 1:45Speaker 1: Ghosts of Christmas Always and The Christmas House Too. Deck
- 1:48Speaker 1: Those Walls, both Gon movies. Decks those Halls. You've never
- 1:52Speaker 1: seen the Christmas House too? No, but I know you
- 1:55Speaker 1: like it? Did you see deck those What?
- 1:58Speaker 2: It's the Christmas House two? Deck those Halls.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I didn't see the Christmas House too, but the Christmas
- 2:02Speaker 1: House is good, the first one one. The teleplay for
- 2:06Speaker 1: One Summer was written by Maria Nation and Michael Ries.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The script was based on the novel One Summer by
- 2:13Speaker 1: David Balducci, which I started reading last night. Did you
- 2:16Speaker 1: I read like four pages? He writes a lot of books, right, Yeah?
- 2:19Speaker 1: Are they? I thought they writ mystery books.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I genuinely have no idea you could be right.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I just remember seeing his name a lot. Yeah. As
- 2:28Speaker 1: an author, yes, but very cool that they turned this
- 2:33Speaker 1: his novel into this movie. He definitely wrote. Baldatu writes
- 2:37Speaker 1: mainly suspense novels and legal thriller. I thought I was right.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Is there anything else like another one of his novels
- 2:44Speaker 1: that got turned into a movie like the one with
- 2:48Speaker 1: Tom Cruise, were Absolute Power King and Maxwell Wish you Well,
- 2:53Speaker 1: the Christmas Train. Oh no, the Firm that's not his books. No,
- 2:58Speaker 1: the Firm is a John Grisham. I feel like this
- 3:02Speaker 1: name falls in line with those other authors. I could
- 3:05Speaker 1: be wrong. Yeah. Sam Page stars as Jack Armstrong. Sam
- 3:08Speaker 1: has an impressive seventy nine acting credits here at Girls
- 3:11Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark. We were originally charmed by Sam as Richard
- 3:16Speaker 1: on the bold Type side note. I've been thinking about
- 3:19Speaker 1: doing a rewatch.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Of that show.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's so good, really good. He has a number of
- 3:23Speaker 1: Hallmark credits, including Deck the Halls on Cherry Lane from
- 3:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. I need if you're listening and you
- 3:29Speaker 1: can think of another show that has that vibe of
- 3:33Speaker 1: the bold Type, hit me with it, because there just
- 3:36Speaker 1: aren't enough of those.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I agree.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I just keep trying to find something new to watch
- 3:39Speaker 1: and everything is like Murder this and Horror that and
- 3:46Speaker 1: Child of a serial Killer. I just you, guys, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: can't do it.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Sarah Drew plays jennefon Tamee.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I love that freaking transition. Sarah's resume totals fifty two
- 3:58Speaker 1: acting credits, including her long run as April Kepner on
- 4:01Speaker 1: Grey's Anatomy. Fun fact, Sam Page appears in four episodes
- 4:04Speaker 1: of Grey's Anatomy. Sarah's a regular on Hallmark and recently
- 4:08Speaker 1: start in the fan favorite series Mistletoe Murders on Hallmark Plus.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Amanda Schole plays Lizzie Armstrong. Amanda has a total of
- 4:16Speaker 1: forty four acting credits, which of course includes her role
- 4:20Speaker 1: in Center Stage, as well as Suits and Hallmark projects
- 4:25Speaker 1: like One Christmas Wish and Family Practice Mysteries Coming Home
- 4:30Speaker 1: Madeline Grace Popovich plays teenage daughter Mickey Armstrong. Madeline has
- 4:34Speaker 1: just six acting credits, and One Summer is her most
- 4:36Speaker 1: recent project according to IMDb. Gavin Borders plays younger brother Tyler.
- 4:41Speaker 1: His acting career began with a role in A Beautiful
- 4:44Speaker 1: Day in the Neighborhood, and his ten acting credits include
- 4:49Speaker 1: roles in One Division, Stranger Things, and Gross Point Garden Society.
- 4:54Speaker 1: This Is what I mean Like, that's a network television
- 4:56Speaker 1: that is a sitcom, but it's based around a murder.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Bryant Prince plays Liam Fontaine. Bryant's seven acting credits include
- 5:04Speaker 1: appearances on Under the Dome and The Resident Elizabeth Becka
- 5:08Speaker 1: plays Bonnie O'Toole. Elizabeth has a wide range of genres
- 5:12Speaker 1: and her sixty six credits including She Hulk, Attorney, out Law, Dope, Sick,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and The Walking Dead. Bill Winkler played Grandpa fred O'Toole.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Bill's forty five acting credits include roles in Manhunt, The Blacklist,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and He'll Billy Elegy. Let's take a quick break and
- 5:28Speaker 1: we'll be right back with first impressions. We're back for
- 5:40Speaker 1: first impressions, and I wonder if you and I share
- 5:43Speaker 1: the same one. Well. Mine is shout out to listener
- 5:46Speaker 1: Paula for finally getting us to watch and review this movie.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Mine is.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm so sorry that we took so long to review
- 5:51Speaker 1: this movie, Paula, because one summer was a stunner. Very nice.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I messaged her after I watched this and I was like, uh,
- 5:59Speaker 1: heads up, I watched it. It wrecked me. You have
- 6:02Speaker 1: nothing to worry about with our review. Yes, I'm certain
- 6:05Speaker 1: she was a little bit worried that it may not
- 6:08Speaker 1: deliver after all these years, all these years, literally years,
- 6:12Speaker 1: has been asking us to watch this movie.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it wasn't anything personal. I don't know why it
- 6:18Speaker 2: never made the list, but but here we are. Tell
- 6:20Speaker 2: me what you liked about it.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Well, I liked a lot about this movie, but let's
- 6:24Speaker 1: start with I really liked the way they chose to
- 6:26Speaker 1: include the character of Lizzie played by Amanda Schul, both
- 6:29Speaker 1: in flashback form and her ghost form ghost Mom, just
- 6:32Speaker 1: like Colton Yep ghost Mom. I thought it was a
- 6:35Speaker 1: nice way to help Jack process his loss. Yeah, it
- 6:39Speaker 1: was nicely done, as well as tell a complete story
- 6:42Speaker 1: of what had happened, and rather than hearing things like
- 6:46Speaker 1: well Lizzie would have wanted, we get to see Lizzie
- 6:49Speaker 1: and Jack work those things out in real time. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And of course some could say like oh dead ghost mom.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It worked for me.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I thought it was super proprue. I'm curious if there
- 7:02Speaker 1: are people who watch this movie and they're like, oh,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that was so cheesy. Some thought it was emotionally manipulative.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Oh really, I loved it. I thought it was super
- 7:11Speaker 1: well done too. And I thought some of those moments
- 7:14Speaker 1: between Jack and Lizzie were very powerful and very emotional,
- 7:20Speaker 1: like when she tells him when they were, like reading
- 7:23Speaker 1: the letter that he writes to his kids, or oh man,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I was a rag a freaking wreck. This movie, to me,
- 7:31Speaker 1: has this like super heavy serious tone to it. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and I've and I said this about North to Home.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I welcome movies that are like that as a change. Yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: But right from the start, like it just had so
- 7:48Speaker 1: much weight to it. There was just like grief simmering
- 7:51Speaker 1: like throughout the whole thing, right. I just thought it
- 7:56Speaker 1: was so well done. I thought the flashbacks, like you said,
- 8:00Speaker 1: were super important to telling the whole story. I thought
- 8:04Speaker 1: there were moments that Jack was so frustrated with his
- 8:07Speaker 1: kids because it not his kids, mostly his teenage daughter
- 8:11Speaker 1: was kind of being an asshole and he was like enough,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I just those are all real and raw that it
- 8:20Speaker 1: was very good. I really like the handling of the
- 8:23Speaker 1: timeline between the relationship that developed between Jack and Jenna.
- 8:27Speaker 1: It feels like the movie ends with him being open
- 8:30Speaker 1: to something new as opposed to ending on the two
- 8:33Speaker 1: of them moving forward. In me, yeah, yes, that felt realistic.
- 8:39Speaker 1: M Yeah, he's still processing these and things and he's
- 8:44Speaker 1: got he's got baggage for days. And I thought that
- 8:49Speaker 1: not being the focus of this movie was well done. Yeah,
- 8:53Speaker 1: speaking of baggage for days, I wrote in my notes,
- 8:56Speaker 1: I said, these characters aren't just sad. They are wrestling
- 8:59Speaker 1: with guilt, regret, anger. I really appreciated that Hallmark gave
- 9:06Speaker 1: them space to like work, like, give us a story
- 9:09Speaker 1: that has humans working through all that stuff. It's not
- 9:12Speaker 1: just like a flip of a switch like mom dies
- 9:14Speaker 1: and every let's start a new, fresh life somewhere else.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that was well done.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Some cool music in this in this movie, Yes, yes, yes,
- 9:24Speaker 1: we get a cover of Landslide by Molly Pardon and
- 9:26Speaker 1: Hollow Hum, which are not artists I'm familiar with, but
- 9:29Speaker 1: it was really beautiful. And a song called if you
- 9:31Speaker 1: Want by Citizen Shade.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yes. I zammed both of those, but I thought.
- 9:35Speaker 1: They really gave a lot of weight to this movie.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I think so too. And they also used stand by
- 9:42Speaker 1: Me when they were flashbacks to Jack and Lizzie's wedding
- 9:46Speaker 1: in that scene, and I liked calling it original music.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I think it was original music that Mickey and like
- 9:52Speaker 1: what I was just gonna add on to that My
- 9:55Speaker 1: notes say that song's a banger. I loved it so cute.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I'm not cute, but like the one I would listen to.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I was like singing it to myself after watching this movie.
- 10:06Speaker 1: For me, I really thought this movie gave strong performances.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Sam Page and Sarah Drew I thought were great. Especially
- 10:16Speaker 1: Sam Page I thought was he's incredible, really freaking good
- 10:21Speaker 1: and believable. I thought Sarah Drew was super likable, and
- 10:24Speaker 1: I was rooty for them to be together. I thought
- 10:28Speaker 1: that felt like a natural progression. I also loved how
- 10:31Speaker 1: supportive she was of Mickey. Yeah, and speaking of Mickey,
- 10:36Speaker 1: this the teenage daughter. I thought that the actress was
- 10:40Speaker 1: so good in this pot. Yes, I bought on portrayal
- 10:43Speaker 1: of a teenager who's going through it. Yeah. I just
- 10:46Speaker 1: really loved Mickey and I loved her friendship with Liam.
- 10:48Speaker 1: He was like sweet and like supportive of her too. Lastly,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I thought the grandmother character added another layer. I thought
- 10:59Speaker 1: she was not super likable. She said some really terrible things.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I thought, like hurtfull thing. Yes, she's basically telling Jack
- 11:07Speaker 1: like he's not a good dad.
- 11:10Speaker 2: This isn't my wishes.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Okay, but you know she did lose her daughter, okay,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and she's dealing with her own grief as well. Let's
- 11:17Speaker 1: talk wishes. Yes, she is a grieving woman who had
- 11:20Speaker 1: lost her daughter. I am allowing for that. I don't
- 11:24Speaker 1: think it gives her this space to say they lost
- 11:27Speaker 1: their mother, the one person who truly cared for them.
- 11:30Speaker 1: She was so out of line to come in and
- 11:32Speaker 1: be like, I'm going to take over custody of your children.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I agree. I just thought I understand that she's grieving,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and I don't expect her to be in a better
- 11:40Speaker 1: place than Jack is, but somebody needed to say to.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Her, Look, Grandma Bonnie.
- 11:46Speaker 1: It's not cool.
- 11:47Speaker 2: You cannot do this.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Her way of processing her grief was trying to take
- 11:52Speaker 1: over and take over her daughter's role in their family,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and I thought it was.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Super uncole, super e cool.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But I it added like attention to the story. Yes fair,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and I was really glad that Jack like gets mad
- 12:09Speaker 1: at her too. Yes, because you know, sometimes you there
- 12:14Speaker 1: are boundaries lines you draw with in laws. Yes, right, well,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and you know, I think her point was you haven't
- 12:25Speaker 1: been a super strong presence in their life because he's
- 12:27Speaker 1: been actively dying all of this.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Time, and he was at war.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Give the man a minute to catch back up.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Totally, they're struggling.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Totally, totally. Can we go back to my likes? Though?
- 12:40Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I thought that was your last one. No,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I just have one more. I it's going to feed
- 12:46Speaker 1: into my wishes. But I did like the like boat
- 12:51Speaker 1: rescue tension and the very intense scene for Hallmark and
- 12:55Speaker 1: the lighthouse. Yeah, and like the the lighthouse was a
- 13:00Speaker 1: real symbol in this in this movie, I thought it all.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Came together beautifully.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So did I. But let me go to my wishes now.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I thought that the boat scenes were super low budget,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Like these kids are out on this boat and it
- 13:16Speaker 1: would be like, throw the book at the water on them,
- 13:19Speaker 1: throw the boocket of water on them, Like, I get
- 13:21Speaker 1: you have restriction, you can only do so much, right,
- 13:25Speaker 1: They're probably in a pool, Like, I get it, I
- 13:27Speaker 1: get it, I get it a little bit cheesy. And
- 13:34Speaker 1: also there was there was once when they realized that
- 13:39Speaker 1: they were out at sea and what's Sarah Drew's Liam No, no, no,
- 13:48Speaker 1: what's her? Jenna? Jenna and Jack are standing on the
- 13:55Speaker 1: shore shouting for them, shouting into the ocean. I'm like,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I does that is that helpful? I don't know, but
- 14:03Speaker 1: it wouldn't be my first thing to think to like
- 14:05Speaker 1: yell out into the ocean, like unless like they're hoping
- 14:08Speaker 1: like they're gonna yell back and then they can like,
- 14:11Speaker 1: but waves are loud. Yeah, that sound was not going
- 14:14Speaker 1: to carry. I agree. I also have a wish based
- 14:18Speaker 1: on that scene, and that is I kind of wanted
- 14:20Speaker 1: to see one final shot of Lizzie in the lighthouse
- 14:24Speaker 1: like that was, you know, a very special place to
- 14:26Speaker 1: her and I when I was gonna say Sarah, when
- 14:29Speaker 1: Jenna shines the light on them, I kind of wanted
- 14:32Speaker 1: to see Lizzie standing behind her smiling.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Like my work here is done.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, all these people they've got it from here.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 14:40Speaker 2: That would have been nice.
- 14:42Speaker 1: That's the only wish I had.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, those are my wishes. I have one.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Did you see that same? This can't be the same.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Sam Page has long hair and a beard in his
- 14:54Speaker 1: flashback scene when he gets married to Lizzie, and.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You think he would have been more clean shaven than that.
- 15:02Speaker 1: We're talking years prior, yeah, at a very minimum sixteen
- 15:05Speaker 1: years prior.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 1: But then I thought, well, it's not too far fetch
- 15:12Speaker 1: to see yourself as in present in a memory like
- 15:16Speaker 1: how you are now bare memory, right, Like when I
- 15:19Speaker 1: have memories of myself twenty years ago, I don't think
- 15:26Speaker 1: of myself as like an interesting version of myself.
- 15:29Speaker 2: But also he was in the military. He might have
- 15:31Speaker 2: more clean cut than that.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, but that's it.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Mine is when.
- 15:39Speaker 1: They're trying to get Mickey on stage to perform, she's
- 15:42Speaker 1: having a little bit. She says, no, it's really worried
- 15:46Speaker 1: because she was like no, no, no, no, no, no no no. Well,
- 15:48Speaker 1: they're all like Mickey Mickey. The problem is a lot
- 15:52Speaker 1: of the people in the audience mouthing Mickey didn't line
- 15:56Speaker 1: up with the actual sound of Mickey two movies, now
- 15:59Speaker 1: that you've noticed that it was.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It was a lot. They were like.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Mag MiG like for their claps, like off everything. I
- 16:09Speaker 1: just thought it was funny.
- 16:10Speaker 2: What did you rate one Summer?
- 16:12Speaker 1: This is a five star movie? It's not. What is yours? Well,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I'm looking at my rating and I noticed I rated
- 16:20Speaker 1: this when I watched it. The other movies I rated
- 16:24Speaker 1: them after the funk don't compare.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I only gave it four stars.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Get Out. I know, I don't know why.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Out this is.
- 16:32Speaker 1: If you are looking for a cry, this is yes,
- 16:36Speaker 1: this is it was really great. This is a great movie.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Get out of Here. Four stars.
- 16:44Speaker 2: You know I think I'm wrong.
