- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Breck dot org. So on Saturday,
- 0:27Speaker 1: the thing that we all knew was going to happen happened,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and reports came that the Saints are in fact going
- 0:32Speaker 1: to restructure Derek Carr's contract. If you're not familiar with
- 0:37Speaker 1: how that works, they effectively take salary converted to a
- 0:41Speaker 1: signing bonus, so it lowers that the cap hit this year,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but that signing bonus money gets spread out into future
- 0:49Speaker 1: years of the contract, so you just take the cap
- 0:51Speaker 1: hit in future years instead of this year. So in
- 0:55Speaker 1: restructuring Derek Carr's contract, that saved the Saints thirty point
- 1:00Speaker 1: almost thirty one million dollars just in a here under
- 1:03Speaker 1: thirty one million dollars immediately, So it puts you in
- 1:06Speaker 1: a much better spot financially to where all that money
- 1:09Speaker 1: you were over the cap, well now you're in better standing.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But the downside is it kicks money into future years.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And again we all sort of anticipated this was going
- 1:18Speaker 1: to happen, especially with the comments Mickey Loomis made it
- 1:20Speaker 1: the combine that they were planning to move forward with
- 1:23Speaker 1: Derek Carr and they felt they could win with him.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: On Monday, Kellen Moore and the new Saints staff had
- 1:30Speaker 1: media availability. It was it was informal, but all the
- 1:33Speaker 1: Saints media was invited to come and meet meet the
- 1:35Speaker 1: entire coaching staff and Kellen Moore. This was our courtesy
- 1:39Speaker 1: of our buddy Sean fitzand Kellen Moore effectively said that
- 1:43Speaker 1: this was going to be the plan whenever he became
- 1:45Speaker 1: the Saints coach.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, certainly you take this job with the intentions of,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, some of the top players being here, and
- 1:52Speaker 2: we felt very comfortable with him. Obviously, anytime you go
- 1:55Speaker 2: through these things, it's great to connect first as people
- 1:58Speaker 2: and build those relationships and go from thear So you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I'm really really excited work.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So effectively said he took the job knowing Carr was
- 2:04Speaker 1: gonna be the quarterback. He also Kellen Moore again this
- 2:06Speaker 1: is courtesy Sean Fazand at Fox eight, about the conversations
- 2:11Speaker 1: that he's had with Derek carsonce becoming the head coach.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, we just we just talked about our obviously confidence
- 2:16Speaker 2: in this situation and the ability for him to have
- 2:18Speaker 2: success here. You know, I think we got a great
- 2:20Speaker 2: group here, from from the players, the coaching staff, to
- 2:23Speaker 2: the to the environment that we're gonna be able to
- 2:25Speaker 2: create for him. It felt really really good and comfortable
- 2:27Speaker 2: with what we're gonna be able to provide him.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Now, I'm not calling Kellen Moore a liar, but I
- 2:31Speaker 1: don't believe him. I believe sometimes you tell half truths.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And if you believe Catherine Terrell's reporting from this weekend,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and I do, Derek Carr was open to hitting the market,
- 2:47Speaker 1: but for New Orleans, there wasn't a situation where that
- 2:50Speaker 1: made sense because of the contract. If you would let
- 2:56Speaker 1: Derek Carr walk, you would have eaten a massive dead
- 3:00Speaker 1: cap number this year. You would have not been able
- 3:04Speaker 1: to get the cap relief you need it. So even
- 3:07Speaker 1: if you wanted to let Derek Carr go test the market, financially,
- 3:11Speaker 1: it wasn't prudent to do it.
- 3:14Speaker 3: So why did Derek Carr agree to a restructure? He didn't.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The way that his contract was drawn, the Saints had
- 3:23Speaker 1: a team right to exercise a contract restructure, which they took.
- 3:30Speaker 1: They did it without Derek Carr having to approve it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So I'm not a promise. I'm not gonna sit here
- 3:39Speaker 1: and yell a promise. I'm gonna keep my call. You've
- 3:43Speaker 1: heard me yell enough. You know how I feel about it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But every time I've talked about Derek Carr, there's been
- 3:51Speaker 1: one consistent bit of pushback I get. Now, I think
- 3:54Speaker 1: overwhelmingly you all agree with me. Overwhelmingly. Like, if I
- 3:58Speaker 1: had to guess just get yes from the tweets and
- 4:01Speaker 1: the texts and the dms and all the feedback I
- 4:04Speaker 1: get from you, I would guess eighty eighty five percent
- 4:08Speaker 1: of you agree with me.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Eighty eighty five percent.
- 4:11Speaker 1: The Saints fans are fed up with Derek Carr, they
- 4:14Speaker 1: hate the contract, they're tired of Mickey Loomis. They want
- 4:16Speaker 1: to move on, they want to move on to what's next.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But there's still that linger in like fifteen percent of you.
- 4:24Speaker 1: The consistent thing I hear from you is why can't
- 4:27Speaker 1: you see Derek Carr isn't the Saint's biggest problem. Okay,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I have not now, nor ever have I said that
- 4:37Speaker 1: Derek Carr is the SAME's biggest problem. What I have
- 4:40Speaker 1: said consistently and a great thing about the internet, Every
- 4:44Speaker 1: damn thing is recorded. Young, Go check my facts. Anybody
- 4:47Speaker 1: find any video of me saying Derek Carr is the
- 4:49Speaker 1: Saint's biggest problem.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I'll eat my words.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'll apologize, but I know what I've said because I've
- 4:54Speaker 1: said the same thing for more than two years now.
- 4:57Speaker 1: What I have said is that Derek Carr has a
- 5:01Speaker 1: lower ceiling but a higher floor. He's a starting caliber
- 5:05Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFL. He's just a lower, mid tier,
- 5:08Speaker 1: upper bottom tier starting quarterback in the NFL. He's not
- 5:12Speaker 1: your biggest problem. You got bigger issues on your team.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I've even said Derek Carr is the best quarterback option
- 5:17Speaker 1: you have. You want to win now, he is the
- 5:21Speaker 1: best option you have to win. However, with a lower ceiling,
- 5:26Speaker 1: he's never gonna get you to win at the highest level,
- 5:29Speaker 1: especially when you can't build a roster around him. And
- 5:33Speaker 1: therein lies the rub my friends, it's not that Derek
- 5:40Speaker 1: Carr is your biggest problem. It's that Derek Carr's contract
- 5:47Speaker 1: relative to his value is your biggest problem. Let's look
- 5:53Speaker 1: at this now. With this contract restructure, the New Orleans
- 6:00Speaker 1: Saints have lowered Derek Carr's cap hit in twenty twenty
- 6:07Speaker 1: five to twenty million dollars. His dead cap number this
- 6:12Speaker 1: year is seventy eight million. So he's gonna be your
- 6:15Speaker 1: quarterback this year period. If you got rid of him
- 6:17Speaker 1: at any point now seventy eight million against the cap,
- 6:20Speaker 1: that ain't gonna happen, all right, So he gonna be
- 6:22Speaker 1: your quarterback. There's a weird scenario that could unfold where
- 6:25Speaker 1: you trade him post June one, which lets you take
- 6:27Speaker 1: a lower dead number this year, but I don't think
- 6:29Speaker 1: that's gonna happen. It would take a wild scenario, but
- 6:33Speaker 1: cross that bridge. If you get there. I'd give that
- 6:35Speaker 1: a five percent likelihood. Okay, Now, next year, because of
- 6:41Speaker 1: this restructure, Derek Carr's cap number next year is sixty
- 6:51Speaker 1: nine million dollars. That's what it'll cost the New Orleans
- 6:55Speaker 1: Saints in twenty twenty six if Derek Carr is on
- 6:58Speaker 1: the roster Okay, well, what's a big deal, matt Let
- 7:01Speaker 1: him go next year? Okay, okay, let him go next year.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Let him go next year. And the dead cap number
- 7:10Speaker 1: next year is fifty nine point six million dollars. It
- 7:16Speaker 1: will cost you sixty million dollars for Derek Carr not
- 7:22Speaker 1: to be on your roster next year. And oh, by
- 7:25Speaker 1: the way, because you've done this Kakamami restructure twice now,
- 7:30Speaker 1: the dead cap number in twenty twenty seven is forty
- 7:35Speaker 1: million dollars. Derek Carr at twenty million dollars counts for
- 7:45Speaker 1: seven percent of your cap. That's perfectly agreeable. But next year,
- 7:55Speaker 1: whether he's on your roster or not, he's gonna count
- 7:57Speaker 1: more than twenty million against your cap. Imagine having a
- 8:01Speaker 1: player I said, I wasn't gonna yell my bad.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I'm just making my point.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Imagine having a player not on your team counting twenty
- 8:15Speaker 1: million dollars against your cap. That's the problem. You don't
- 8:23Speaker 1: have enough cap space to go build a roster around
- 8:30Speaker 1: Derek Carr to allow him to compete.
- 8:35Speaker 3: If you took Derek Carr, what's the best roster in
- 8:38Speaker 3: the NFL? The Eagles? Can we agree?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Let's just say the Eagles the best roster in the NFL.
- 8:41Speaker 1: If you put Derek Carr on the Eagles roster, that's
- 8:45Speaker 1: a playoff team. There's still a playoff team. I don't
- 8:47Speaker 1: know that they win a Super Bowl because I don't
- 8:49Speaker 1: think he's good enough to do that, but there's still
- 8:50Speaker 1: a playoff team.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Great roster with Derek Carr. But can Derek Carr.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Elevate a team to make the playoffs and to win
- 9:00Speaker 1: the playoffs? I say absolutely not, because we've got eleven
- 9:03Speaker 1: years of a sample size to show you that. So
- 9:08Speaker 1: you gotta build a roster around him.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Well, Derek Derek Carr.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Next year, his cap number is going to be sixty
- 9:18Speaker 1: million dollars or seventy depending. The highest cap hit by
- 9:25Speaker 1: a quarterback in twenty twenty four is Dak Prescott at
- 9:28Speaker 1: sixty million dollars.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Let's look at twenty twenty five.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Let's look at this NFL season, all right, So Derek Carr,
- 9:35Speaker 1: he took this restructure, so his cap number now has
- 9:38Speaker 1: him all the way down at twenty at let's see,
- 9:43Speaker 1: he's sixteenth. His cap number is about it gets right
- 9:46Speaker 1: about the middle to the bottom of the NFL twenty
- 9:50Speaker 1: twenty five, Dak Prescott's sixty million, Joe Burrow fifty five million,
- 9:54Speaker 1: Jordan Love fifty five million, Josh Allen fifty five million.
- 9:58Speaker 3: This is their Caphit this.
- 10:00Speaker 1: These quarterbacks cap hits for the twenty twenty five season.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence fifty five million, two of fifty three point
- 10:06Speaker 1: one Golf fifty three million, Herbert fifty two to five,
- 10:10Speaker 1: Lamar fifty two, Jalen fifty one, Kyler Murray forty six
- 10:13Speaker 1: one point. Is point is there's a lot of quarterbacks
- 10:19Speaker 1: with a fifty million dollar cap number, but it's Joe
- 10:24Speaker 1: Burrow and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
- 10:27Speaker 3: It's the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You can sink twenty percent of your cap number into
- 10:33Speaker 1: those guys because they're good enough.
- 10:37Speaker 3: When you're Derek Carr, you can't.
- 10:39Speaker 1: That's the problem. That's what I've been yelling about for
- 10:42Speaker 1: two years. No, Derek Carr is not your biggest problem.
- 10:46Speaker 1: It's not the biggest weakness on your team.
- 10:48Speaker 3: But when you're.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Paying him like you have, you can't build a team
- 10:55Speaker 1: around him to elevate him.
- 10:58Speaker 3: That's your problem.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's gonna continue to be a problem in twenty twenty
- 11:02Speaker 1: five and twenty twenty six and twenty twenty seven because
- 11:08Speaker 1: you continue to cripple your team's ability to build a
- 11:14Speaker 1: competent roster.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Around him to be able to compete. That's the problem.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Is Derek Carr a better option this year than Spencer Rattler?
- 11:25Speaker 3: Hell yeah?
- 11:28Speaker 1: But even with Derek Carr, what is this team a
- 11:33Speaker 1: seven win team?
- 11:35Speaker 3: So what are you doing? Maybe?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Maybe maybe they mess up and win eight. But that's
- 11:47Speaker 1: the point I've been making now for two years, y'all.
- 11:50Speaker 1: He's got a lower ceiling and a higher floor. He's
- 11:53Speaker 1: not taking an average roster and elevating it. Joe Burrow
- 11:57Speaker 1: got to a Super Bowl with me playing on the
- 12:00Speaker 1: offensive line. He was obliterated, sacked more times than anybody
- 12:04Speaker 1: ever gets to the Super Bowl. Why because he's amazing.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Andy Reid was on something called the Better Angle. Andy
- 12:19Speaker 1: Reid pretty good coach right keeps winning Super Bowl, is
- 12:23Speaker 1: getting back there despite the fact that their quarterback is
- 12:25Speaker 1: eating up fifty five million against the cap and they
- 12:27Speaker 1: paid him a half a billion dollar contract because you
- 12:30Speaker 1: had to. And you keep seeing guys that are great
- 12:33Speaker 1: members of that team leave. I mean Tyreek Hill you
- 12:36Speaker 1: don't think Patrick Mahomes would love this stuff. Tyreek Hill
- 12:38Speaker 1: hanging around. They just Kansas City just traded Joe Toney.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Joe Toney has been a pretty good player in his career.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Started one hundred and forty six games, two time first
- 12:56Speaker 1: team All Pro, two times second team All Pro, three
- 12:58Speaker 1: time Pro Bowler. He was starting center for the Patriots.
- 13:01Speaker 1: One Super Bowls there, starting center for the Chiefs one
- 13:03Speaker 1: Super Bowls there. Chiefs just traded in Chicago. Andy Reid explain.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Why he's like my favorite, one of my favorite all
- 13:10Speaker 4: time guys that I've coached. He's just a good dude.
- 13:14Speaker 4: I mean, just all around a good dude. Tough, dirty, dirty, tough.
- 13:18Speaker 4: He's going to do Chicago, you know, just a heck
- 13:21Speaker 4: of a job. I mean, he still can play. But
- 13:23Speaker 4: the thing you got to do is you've got to
- 13:24Speaker 4: be able to manage this captain. It's a nightmark that way.
- 13:29Speaker 4: You just if you're gonna if you're not going to
- 13:31Speaker 4: push a ton of money forward, then you've got to
- 13:33Speaker 4: manage the cap and try to keep consistent with this
- 13:36Speaker 4: whole winning thing. And it's it's not an easy thing
- 13:39Speaker 4: to manage, and sometimes you have to make these decisions
- 13:42Speaker 4: and it just kicks you right in the butt. It's
- 13:44Speaker 4: they're tough one.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question. You got to manage
- 13:48Speaker 1: this cap unless you want to just keep pushing money forward.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Got to make tough decisions. Let me ask you a question.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Let's pull the room.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Who's done a better job managing the cap and building
- 13:59Speaker 1: the roster?
- 14:01Speaker 3: The Chiefs are the Saints. Muse, who do you think
- 14:03Speaker 3: is done a better job? The Kansas City Chiefs?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Ah, hater Polly, who do you think has done a
- 14:09Speaker 1: better job managing their roster?
- 14:11Speaker 3: The Chiefs are the Saints.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'll say the Chiefs, Well, you're gonna have to take
- 14:14Speaker 1: that Florida ly off the back last of your truck.
- 14:18Speaker 3: What are we talking about?
- 14:22Speaker 1: One of the greatest dynasties in the history of the NFL.
- 14:24Speaker 1: The head coach is telling you we just trade away
- 14:25Speaker 1: in All Pro Center. Why because gotta manage the cap.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I mean, you could just kick money in the future,
- 14:29Speaker 1: but if you really want to mana's cap, you gotta
- 14:32Speaker 1: make tough decisions.
- 14:37Speaker 3: This is the problem.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You can't build a roster capable of competing when you
- 14:44Speaker 1: keep doing this because too much of your salary is
- 14:49Speaker 1: tied up in players that don't play for you anymore
- 14:53Speaker 1: or are named Derek Carr and have a low ceiling.
- 14:58Speaker 1: If I needed to tie up a quar of my
- 15:01Speaker 1: salary cap into Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson or Josh
- 15:06Speaker 1: Allen or Patrick Mahomes, I do it in an instant.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And if that meant trading away in all pro center,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you do it because you have to. And you gotta
- 15:17Speaker 1: be good at scouting and drafting and finding value so
- 15:20Speaker 1: you can build your roster around your all everything quarterback.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But when you do a terrible job of managing your cap,
- 15:31Speaker 1: like the New Orleans Saints, this is the problem. So
- 15:33Speaker 1: I'll say it again to you, for those of you
- 15:34Speaker 1: who just don't seem to understand it, comprehend it, or
- 15:37Speaker 1: want to hear it again, I'm speaking to the minority here.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I am not saying Derek Carr is the New Orleans
- 15:43Speaker 1: Saints' biggest problem.
- 15:45Speaker 3: What I am.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Saying is Derek Carr, his contract relative to his value,
- 15:55Speaker 1: is your biggest problem. Because you have so much money
- 15:59Speaker 1: tied up in a player that is mid it cripples
- 16:02Speaker 1: your ability to build a roster capable of competing. And
- 16:07Speaker 1: now with this restructure that's not gonna change for at
- 16:11Speaker 1: least two more years. So I'm done yelling. They made
- 16:18Speaker 1: their bed, they're gonna lie in it, and I'm.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Gonna sit here.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'll talk about them on Sundays and Monday whatever whenever
- 16:24Speaker 1: they come up, because we got to and there's interest
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the team. But if you have any expectation whatsoever,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you need to check out at the door because this
- 16:34Speaker 1: team is not competing for anything for at least two
- 16:40Speaker 1: more years.
