- 0:00Speaker 1: Delegations from Israel, Hamas and the US are set to
- 0:04Speaker 1: begin key peace negotiations in Egypt. They hoped to finalize
- 0:08Speaker 1: a ceasefire deal based on President Donald Trump's Gaza Plan.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hamas signaled it's on board with releasing the hostages. It
- 0:16Speaker 1: stopped short of a full endorsement of the plan. President
- 0:20Speaker 1: Trump took that as a win, now shifting his pressure
- 0:23Speaker 1: to Israel, boxing in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, explicitly calling
- 0:27Speaker 1: on him to stop the bombing on Gaza. While Natanyahu
- 0:31Speaker 1: expressed optimism about the hostages being returned, he also defended
- 0:35Speaker 1: his pursuits of all out war.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Thanks to the great support I received from you citizens
- 0:43Speaker 2: of Israel, and thanks to the bravery of our fighters.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I stood up to enormous pressure from home and abroad
- 0:49Speaker 2: to stop the war and to give into Hamas's dictates.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You know what would have happened. Then we would have
- 0:54Speaker 2: left Gaza having achieved almost nothing.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Joel Robin is a Joel Rubin is former Deputy Assistant
- 1:01Speaker 1: Secretary of State for the Obama administration. He joins the chat.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Welcome Joel, good morning, Audie. Okay so Nanya, who is
- 1:08Speaker 1: dealing with his own domestic politics, his own political coalition,
- 1:12Speaker 1: which hinges on a more hardline stance. So what do
- 1:15Speaker 1: you see in how he is trying to message this
- 1:17Speaker 1: to the public, to the international community.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Well, look, if there's one thing about Prime mister Natzianya said,
- 1:22Speaker 3: he values his political survival over all else, and he
- 1:25Speaker 3: looks at Donald Trump and he's afraid because Donald Trump
- 1:28Speaker 3: is someone who can literally throw him out of office.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And that is a unique position for the American president.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Why do you think that is it because of Trump's
- 1:36Speaker 1: emphasis on the hostages or what has an endheered in
- 1:39Speaker 1: to the Israeli community.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I gotta tell you he's beloved in Israel, from moving
- 1:43Speaker 3: the American embassy to Jerusalem, to allowing Israel to annex
- 1:47Speaker 3: to go on Heights, to bombing Iran. The list goes
- 1:49Speaker 3: on and on. And Netzinga who knows this that if
- 1:52Speaker 3: Trump starts denouncing Natsunyahu and he's a wild card. What
- 1:55Speaker 3: if he says, I'm going to cut aid, I'm going
- 1:56Speaker 3: to stop sending you the weapons, that would get BB
- 1:59Speaker 3: thrown out. And so for Natzan yall, who's playing for
- 2:02Speaker 3: a time this deal does it's if it works, If
- 2:05Speaker 3: it goes forward, have the chance to get hostages out,
- 2:08Speaker 3: get aid into Gaza, move towards the ceasefire. But it's
- 2:11Speaker 3: not much of a deal, I gotta tell you. It's
- 2:13Speaker 3: more of an announcement and a set of promises and
- 2:16Speaker 3: some kind of framework that potentially couldn't possibly have nothing.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And President John told Jake Tapper yesterday in a series
- 2:22Speaker 1: of text messages, We're going to show you some of
- 2:24Speaker 1: those that Hamas faces quote complete obliteration if it refuses
- 2:28Speaker 1: to give up power in Gaza. I think most agreements
- 2:31Speaker 1: have talked about the idea of there is no Hamas
- 2:33Speaker 1: ruling Gaza after this scenario, can you talk about Hamas
- 2:39Speaker 1: it's out? Like, how does this happen? How do you
- 2:41Speaker 1: bring such a group to the table.
- 2:43Speaker 3: First of all, I got to say that that's ridiculous. Look,
- 2:46Speaker 3: this has been a hot war for two years, but
- 2:48Speaker 3: it's a forty year war with Hamas going back of
- 2:51Speaker 3: multi decades. And you have Hamas in the West Bank
- 2:54Speaker 3: fighting a low boil war with the Israelis and the
- 2:56Speaker 3: settlers over there. So the idead Hamas is done, while
- 3:00Speaker 3: I would wish it be, so that is not in
- 3:02Speaker 3: the cards in this and that is what they're going
- 3:05Speaker 3: to have to negotiate. Now, what are the modalities Hamas
- 3:07Speaker 3: could potentially be pushed out if, for example, in the
- 3:10Speaker 3: reconstruction process, the Arab nations want to put money in
- 3:13Speaker 3: to rebuild it and get new Palestinian leaders. But that
- 3:16Speaker 3: is not clear as to being part of this deal.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Nobody signed the paper in public yet, So that's what
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'm looking for. Will the Israelies and the Hamas leaders
- 3:24Speaker 3: sign the same piece of paper and agree to the
- 3:27Speaker 3: same details, then we have a deal, all right.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I want to bring something to the rest of the group,
- 3:31Speaker 1: addressing something you mentioned earlier. A new poll finds two
- 3:34Speaker 1: thirds of Americans oppose sending more weapons to Israel and
- 3:39Speaker 1: the same support sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. And I
- 3:43Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit about this shift you're noting.
- 3:46Speaker 1: This is something you're getting a sense of as well.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I definitely think there's wartime fatigue in America. So first
- 3:51Speaker 4: you had the entire thing with Russia and Ukraine, fatigue
- 3:54Speaker 4: around why are we footing that war when we have
- 3:56Speaker 4: so many domestic problems at home. Now you're seeing a
- 3:59Speaker 4: similar situation in Israel, but it's amplified by what people
- 4:02Speaker 4: are seeing on social media, which is photos and videos
- 4:05Speaker 4: of gossens that are starving, kids that are dying, and
- 4:08Speaker 4: that makes people in America very uncomfortable with continuing to
- 4:11Speaker 4: support Israel's side.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Of the war.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But do you think that is what has changed. I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 1: there's a whole bunch of students out there who are
- 4:17Speaker 1: probably like, hey, thanks for coming around.
- 4:20Speaker 5: I think this is one of the effects of the
- 4:21Speaker 5: war which is going to be dangerous for Israel in
- 4:25Speaker 5: the long term because it's made the Israeli Palestinian question
- 4:29Speaker 5: a domestic political issue in the United States as it
- 4:32Speaker 5: never was over the forty years that you were talking about,
- 4:37Speaker 5: not just in the Democratic Party but more generally now,
- 4:42Speaker 5: meaning people.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The average person has now opinions about Netta ya who,
- 4:48Speaker 1: not Israel, but even about.
- 4:49Speaker 5: The dotas has explained some of the present's actions, because
- 4:51Speaker 5: what's been missing in all of his peace efforts so
- 4:54Speaker 5: far in Israel and in Ukraine is his willingness to
- 4:58Speaker 5: impose power and leverage American leverage. We often talk about
- 5:02Speaker 5: more nefarious wheres he does in the United States, But
- 5:05Speaker 5: is this exactly what should be happening now that Trump
- 5:08Speaker 5: is finally standing behind his statements.
