- 0:00The Internet is full of people who post really stupid stuff
- 0:05about NASA, about SpaceX, about Elon Musk.
- 0:09And I want to draw your attention to one of them today.
- 0:12Now, if you're this person, I apologize, but what you said was
- 0:16absolutely absurd. And I want to draw some
- 0:19attention to it because if there's anybody out there that
- 0:21thinks the same way, if you think the same way that this
- 0:24user thinks, and this is a Reddit post, so you know it's
- 0:28going to be really good. If you think like them, you're
- 0:32completely wrong. And it's a weird, really weird
- 0:34thing to think. So let's look at what was the
- 0:38beginning of this. NASA and SpaceX have a
- 0:40partnership, and they've had a partnership for a long time, but
- 0:43now they have a different partnership.
- 0:45SpaceX is going to deorbit the International Space Station.
- 0:50Now, a few accounts, including Eric Berger, have mentioned
- 0:54something about Dragon XL. And if you're not familiar with
- 0:58Dragon XL is it's kind of like a Dragon capsule, but it's a big
- 1:04tube basically. And what they may be doing with
- 1:08this is using it as sort of a, a tugboat to push the space
- 1:12station into the deorbit maneuvers.
- 1:15And then it will burn up in the atmosphere, over the ocean,
- 1:20someplace where there's no people, where there's no cars,
- 1:23where there's no cities, over the ocean somewhere.
- 1:26Avoid risk of the populated areas now.
- 1:29Selecting AUSD Orbit Vehicle for the International Space Station
- 1:32will help NASA and its international partners ensure a
- 1:35safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of
- 1:39the station's operations. And it's a sad day.
- 1:42It's a 20-30. It's going to happen.
- 1:44It's a sad day because it's been going on for a long time.
- 1:47And we'd love to see people working and living in space.
- 1:51Now, the space station will be run by private entities.
- 1:54Different space stations will be in orbit.
- 1:57And you can pick and choose whatever space station you want
- 1:59to go to with whatever vehicle you want to go to that with.
- 2:03You can pick a, a SpaceX Dragon. You can pick whatever Blue
- 2:07Origin's going to send up there if they ever get anything to
- 2:09orbit a ULA rocket where however you want to get up there, you
- 2:12can get up there. You go with Russia, wherever,
- 2:14who cares? But there's going to be numerous
- 2:17space stations, private space stations, in the future.
- 2:20Now SpaceX will be deorbiting this.
- 2:23Will they be using a Starship? The answer is absolutely not.
- 2:26There's no reason to use a Starship though.
- 2:29The space station is about the size of a American football
- 2:34field. There's no need to use a
- 2:37Starship. Plus, the Starship isn't built
- 2:40yet, so they can't really depend on it to do these maneuvers.
- 2:44They've had Dragon XL in the works forever, you know, years.
- 2:51So and it's going to be used for this.
- 2:54Basically, that's what that's used for.
- 2:56This is used for transport into for cargo, things like that.
- 2:59That was on the drawing board before.
- 3:01It's been on the board since and they're going to continue using
- 3:05this vehicle. Now.
- 3:07If you want to hear something really stupid, stay tuned
- 3:10because this is this is a really silly thing that somebody posted
- 3:16on Reddit. Could SpaceX deorbit the ISS by
- 3:20filling Starship with scrap metal, launching it into a head
- 3:24on orbit, and then simply ramming the space station?
- 3:30So think about that for a little bit.
- 3:32Could it be a ram machine? A Starship?
- 3:36A Starship? Something that's like 150 feet
- 3:40tall or more, depending on what version you use of a Starship,
- 3:46and they just want to ram it into the International Space
- 3:49Station. Now, this is a really dumb idea.
- 3:52One, it's a really dumb idea because you destroy the
- 3:55Starship. It's made out of metal.
- 3:57Of course, it's made out of steel, which is really durable,
- 4:01but you're going to destroy the Starship in this process by
- 4:06ramming it into a space station, which is also it's made out of
- 4:11composites, it's made out of metal.
- 4:13There's all sorts of electronics in there.
- 4:15Things will catch on, you know, catch on fire interiorly,
- 4:19interiorly. Is that a word?
- 4:20Inside the space station, there'll be sparking all sorts
- 4:23of things. There's no oxygen on the
- 4:25outside, but things can happen on the inside.
- 4:27Ram it. It breaks apart and that's what
- 4:29they want. They just kind of want to ram
- 4:30into it, launch it into head on orbit, and then simply ramming
- 4:35the ISS. No, that's not how things are
- 4:37done in space. That's not how things are done.
- 4:40You're going to gently tug this thing or gently nudge it into
- 4:44the orbit that it needs to go. Because when you ram a space
- 4:48station, millions of particles of metal and debris would fly
- 4:54wherever they fly, whether that's towards other satellites,
- 4:59where if that's, if there's a rocket launch going on with
- 5:01people on board, you're going to possibly hurt those people.
- 5:06Of course, it'll be zoned off, so nobody can fly in that area
- 5:10in that time, including spacecraft and aircraft, boats,
- 5:15things like that. There's going to be an exclusion
- 5:16zone for miles. I don't know how how many miles
- 5:20that you haven't really set any standards yet.
- 5:22But The thing is as big as a football field, it's 100 yards
- 5:26long. So it's it's a big piece of
- 5:30machinery. And if you ram it, there's going
- 5:33to be pieces everywhere. Shrapnel.
- 5:35They could RIP through the side of a spacecraft and destroy
- 5:39everything on board. We've all seen those stupid
- 5:42movies about, you know, people getting stuck on a space station
- 5:47or on a space shuttle or something like that.
- 5:49And you know, some, some micro meteorite burst through the
- 5:53station. It destroys everything.
- 5:56Well, that's kind of what would happen here.
- 5:58Millions of pieces of this would go everywhere and possibly
- 6:02destroy, you know, other satellites.
- 6:05And it could possibly make sort of like a ring, an orbital ring
- 6:09of debris in the same orbit that this space station is a little
- 6:13bit different because it'll get nudged out of the way.
- 6:16But this is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.
- 6:18Why would you smash into the space station and risk
- 6:21everything and the original post Let me go back to this this this
- 6:27post right here whoops Let me go back to this because they
- 6:29deleted the post of the the mods deleted it and I have to find
- 6:33there we go. This is the reasoning for this.
- 6:36This is how stupid this is. It would be super cheap and
- 6:39super quick though. They could even use one of the
- 6:41old Starship prototypes that are too obsolete even for testing
- 6:45purposes and that are earmarked for dismantling.
- 6:47Fill one of them with a bunch of old car and truck bodies from
- 6:52the scrap yard and then send it. It could be done for not much
- 6:56more than the cost of the propellant.
- 7:00Oh my God, Oh my God, old car and truck bodies.
- 7:07Why would you send old car and truck bodies from a scrap yard
- 7:12space? I mean this is a this is like
- 7:15next level troll. If they're not serious, if
- 7:18they're just joking, but this is a great troll.
- 7:20Like think about how great that would be.
- 7:23You just send some old car bodies in there, buddy.
- 7:26Old truck bodies from the scrap yard and they had to mention
- 7:29that it's from the scrap yard too, not just old truck car and
- 7:32truck body. They mentioned it was from the
- 7:34scrap. So it's brilliant.
- 7:36It's brilliant. And then of course, lucky nil
- 7:38says no, it wouldn't be super quick and that's the reason why
- 7:40it would be a bad idea. ISS is far too fragile to
- 7:43significantly reduce its speed when being rammed and that's a
- 7:48little bit lower than touring wheel here.
- 7:51So touring wheel, I'm giving you a shout out because if you're
- 7:53trolling, this is a good troll. And if you're joking, they
- 7:57actually deleted the post so I had to like go the the troll is
- 8:00basically this comment right here is what their original post
- 8:04was, but let me know in the comments if you think this is
- 8:06really stupid. And then time traveling, Chris
- 8:10says, OK, OP, please stay away from the space industry, but by
- 8:15all means, consider entering this supervillain industry.
- 8:21Yeah, there's all sorts of comments on here.
- 8:23This this started out pretty good.
- 8:24But I wish the the mods on SpaceX launch would have left
- 8:27this for a little bit because it would have been pretty good to
- 8:30see people freak out about it for a while.
- 8:33Because I think like one, it's funny.
- 8:36It's also really stupid to think like, if that's what you really
- 8:39thought, you have to have some sort of like some, some way to
- 8:47discern between something that's right, something that's going to
- 8:50work and something that's going to be a horrible idea.
- 8:55You got to have that. You got to have that in your
- 8:56brain. Some people don't.
- 8:58This person might not have touring wheel.
- 9:00Shout out to you for making this post because it was really
- 9:04funny. It's like one day ago and I saw
- 9:05and I was like, Oh my God, and I posted.
- 9:07That's ridiculously irresponsible.
- 9:09Of course, of course, trog doors beefy arm on Reddit, if you
- 9:13will, And there's a discord link in the description too.
- 9:16So that's it for that. But there's another thing that I
- 9:19want to talk about because not only is there a stupid post like
- 9:24this on Reddit, but there's a great post on Reddit about the
- 9:28next steps for Starship. And this is Kathy Leaders.
- 9:32She did a little summit as she's the general manager of Starbase,
- 9:37and she did a summit near Starbase recently.
- 9:42And it says SpaceX is planning to establish a permanent orbital
- 9:45fuel depot to support missions to the moon and Mars.
- 9:47According to Cathy Leaders, the general manager of Starbase.
- 9:50That makes more sense, doesn't it?
- 9:53One depot, orbital fuel depot, send the fuel up, depot it up.
- 9:57It's just kind of like a gas station, right?
- 10:00The gas station has tanks underneath it.
- 10:02If you don't know how a gas station works, there's, there's
- 10:04tanks underneath the gas station that trucks pull in.
- 10:06And then they use a hose and they oop, I gotta hit my space
- 10:09bar, use a hose and they put the gas in the tanker underneath the
- 10:14gas station. And then you go fill your car at
- 10:16the gas tanks. Pretty cool.
- 10:17That's exactly what's gonna happen with SpaceX.
- 10:19Like it's the smartest idea to have one place with one big
- 10:23tanker. Now how are they going to get
- 10:26this tanker into space? And is one SpaceX Starship going
- 10:31to be big enough? No, it's not going to be big
- 10:33enough to refuel something that's going to be going to
- 10:35Mars. And Elon and Kathy and some NASA
- 10:41administrator people said that it's going to take about 10 of
- 10:47Starships to refuel 1 Starship to get to the moon.
- 10:51So imagine going to Mars or any place else out in the solar
- 10:55system. You're going to have to have
- 10:56depots along the way. I mean, unless you do gravity
- 11:00assists, which is totally possible too.
- 11:02You could fling yourself from planet to planet.
- 11:04If you want to get further out or celestial body, you can fling
- 11:06yourself from the moon or from Earth's orbit and use the
- 11:09gravity assist to go out there. But fuel depot on the way to
- 11:14Mars would be pretty cool and they could just blast yourself
- 11:17as fast as possible. Of course you have to slow down
- 11:19for a depot. That's another whole thing that
- 11:22that's why I'm not a rocket scientist, because I'm not an
- 11:25engineer for that reason, because I can't figure out those
- 11:29computations, can't figure that out.
- 11:31The calculations to get to a certain spot, slow down, do some
- 11:35sort of flip maneuver, slow down and then refuel.
- 11:38That's incredibly hard math to do.
- 11:40So SpaceX will figure that out. But this is what Elon said
- 11:44about. And there's there's another
- 11:46thing too that I got to show you.
- 11:48Elon said about this, that if they want to get this view of
- 11:56Starship, the next time that it lands on the chopsticks, whether
- 12:00it's going to be the next flight or the flight after that or the
- 12:03flight after that, we're not 100% sure.
- 12:06So it's going to be an interesting time.
- 12:10And I think the thing that we have to think about is that
- 12:15SpaceX will do this eventually, right?
- 12:17They're going to do this eventually.
- 12:18They're going to catch it. But during this talk with Kathy,
- 12:21she kind of alluded that they might not catch this at the next
- 12:27time. And that could be due to FAA
- 12:30regulations. It could be due to the flight
- 12:33just not being ready for that, could be the booster not being
- 12:35ready for that. Elon, of course, is the biggest
- 12:37hype man. So there's a possibility that he
- 12:40was like, yeah, I want to do it. And then it caught on.
- 12:43He's like, oh, yeah, we should do it.
- 12:45Can we do it? Engineers, Hey, can we do it?
- 12:47Did we do this right? You know?
- 12:49And then the engineers were like, yeah, I think we could do
- 12:50it. But there's a lot of other
- 12:54moving parts to this that SpaceX isn't in control of.
- 12:57The FAA has to sign off on it. And they haven't proven, SpaceX
- 13:01hasn't proven yet that they can fly over land safely inland, a
- 13:06booster back on land. So that's a little bit of red
- 13:10tape, but there are a few things that if you go back to here this
- 13:15planning here there's a few other things other info info
- 13:18from this close community talk thanks to may help.
- 13:22Oh now user on Reddit three months to completion of star
- 13:26factory, which is great Then they'll be able to crank out
- 13:29starships in a fast, faster fashion.
- 13:32Working with the Texas Department of transportation on
- 13:34expanding Hwy. 4 to a four lane Rd. eventually.
- 13:37Right now it's a 2 lane Rd. and it's, it's really dangerous to
- 13:41be honest with you. I've driven it hundreds of times
- 13:43when I was living at Star Base and there's just big trucks
- 13:47everywhere back and forth all the time.
- 13:49Just a ton of traffic going down there.
- 13:51So 4 lane Rd. would be really nice.
- 13:53Star Base, commercial retail space on hold.
- 13:57Basically they had some retail space there that they were going
- 14:00to use for restaurants and place to buy things, things like that.
- 14:04Everything's on hold because they're like, well, we have to
- 14:06make some rockets, so let's do that.
- 14:09She talked about residency over 50% local to Brownsville with
- 14:13about 400 staff living on site. Brownsville's about 25 to 30
- 14:17minutes away, depending on where you are.
- 14:18And it could be, if you're on the other side, 45 minutes to an
- 14:21hour away from Starbase. So it would be nice if they were
- 14:25closer by a permanent orbital fuel depot for Moon and Mars
- 14:28missions. We already talked about that.
- 14:29SpaceX monitoring sound levels for Port Isabel, SPI and
- 14:33Brownsville during testing. Texas Park and wildlife
- 14:40environmental mitigation teams in place before and after
- 14:43launches and monthly Emergency Management meetings with Cameron
- 14:47County, which is where Star Base is located, and local hospitals
- 14:51for catastrophe scenarios. So when she says maybe not this
- 14:56flight, the monthly Emergency Management meeting with Cameron
- 15:00County and local hospitals for catastrophe scenarios, those go
- 15:04hand in hand. What if something bad happens?
- 15:07Well, emergency meetings with Cameron County local hospitals
- 15:10have to have to come into play. Those Cameron County hospitals
- 15:15might be the best way to mitigate the circumstances if a
- 15:19booster goes wild and flies into Starbase.
- 15:22And I mean, there's bunkers where people do their work, but
- 15:25it's not all safe. You know, it's they're not like
- 15:29bunker bunkers, right? And it's kind of close, like a
- 15:32mile away from launch site. So I mean, they did take all the
- 15:38precautions that they needed to, but who knows what can happen,
- 15:42right? So if you're waiting for an IFT
- 15:465 catch, you might be out of luck.
- 15:50And unfortunately, I would love to have seen that.
- 15:53But I, I'm not trying to be negative.
- 15:55I just know that it's a really hard task.
- 15:58It's a really hard engineering problem to figure out.
- 16:01And if they could figure it out with these current tests that
- 16:05they're doing, that'd be great. But I don't think they're going
- 16:08to do a fry of T5. Also, let me know in the

- 16:16They'll be like this one depot. I think that would solve so many
- 16:19problems. Instead of launching numerous
- 16:22depots and having numerous depots in orbit, just one one
- 16:26depot that you fly starships and fuel ships to.
