- 0:04welcome to the voices of life a ministry of the
- 0:07church for life and i'm your host pastor david
- 0:10today we're stepping into a special saint valentine's
- 0:14day episode we're going to take a moment to pause
- 0:19to breathe and to rediscover the spiritual roots
- 0:23behind a day the world often treats as nothing
- 0:27more than a romance as needing roses to be given,
- 0:32chocolates, and heart -shaped card candy. But
- 0:37beneath the modern celebration lies a story of
- 0:42courage, conviction, sacrifice, and Christ -like
- 0:46love. Today, we're going back to the beginning,
- 0:52back to the heart of St. Valentine's Day. Long
- 0:58before Valentine's Day became a cultural celebration,
- 1:01there was a man, a real man, named Valentinus,
- 1:07a Christian priest living in Rome during the
- 1:11third century. Rome was a dangerous place for
- 1:15followers of Jesus. Faith was costly. Conviction
- 1:21was risky. And love? True. sacrificial christ
- 1:27-centered love was often misunderstood valentinus
- 1:32was known for his compassion his courage and
- 1:36unwavering commitment to the gospel he ministered
- 1:42to persecuted believers he prayed for the sick
- 1:47he encouraged the fearful he strengthened the
- 1:52weak And he took the time to perform Christian
- 2:03marriages at a time when the emperor had forbidden
- 2:07them. Why? Because Valentinus believed marriage
- 2:13was sacred. He believed love was holy. He believed
- 2:22covenant mattered. And he believed that no earthly
- 2:32power could overrule what God has ordained. St.
- 2:45Valentine's Day is not rooted in romance. It
- 2:47is rooted in sacrifice. Valentinus risked his
- 2:51life to bless marriages, to protect Christian
- 2:54couples, to honor God's design for love. And
- 2:58eventually... he was arrested but even in prison
- 3:01he continued to minister he prayed for his jailers
- 3:06he encouraged believers he shared the gospel
- 3:10with anyone who would listen legend says he prayed
- 3:15for the blind daughter of his jailer and god
- 3:19healed her and on the day of his execution he
- 3:25wrote her a final note And it was signed from
- 3:31your Valentine. Not as a romantic gesture, but
- 3:36a pastoral one. A blessing, a farewell, a testimony
- 3:41of faith in the face of death. St. Valentine's
- 3:49Day is not about chocolates. It's not about flowers.
- 3:51It's not about dinner reservations. It is about
- 3:55Christ -like love. Love that sacrifices, protects,
- 4:00and love that honors God. It is a love that stands
- 4:06firm even when it costs something. Jesus said,
- 4:11greater love has no one than this, to lay down
- 4:18one's life for one's friend. Valentinus lived
- 4:21that. He embodied it. He died with that conviction
- 4:25in his heart. So what does St. Valentine's Day
- 4:29mean for us today? It means love is holy. It
- 4:33means covenant matters. It means marriage is
- 4:40sacred. It means faithfulness is being beautiful.
- 4:48It means sacrifice is powerful. It means love
- 4:54is not a feeling, love is a calling. A calling
- 4:57to love as Christ loved us. A calling to forgive.
- 5:03A calling to serve. A calling to honor. A calling
- 5:09to cherish and to give. And to give more than
- 5:13we receive. This day is not about sentimentality.
- 5:19It is about spirituality. Let us pray. Father,
- 5:29thank you for the example of St. Valentine, a
- 5:33man who loved boldly, served faithfully, and
- 5:39stood courageously for the gospel. Teach us to
- 5:44love with the same conviction. Teach us to honor
- 5:49the relationships you've given us. Teach us to
- 5:53cherish the people in our lives. Teach us to
- 5:58reflect the love of Christ in every word and
- 6:02every action. May this St. Valentine's Day be
- 6:07more than a celebration. May it be a reminder
- 6:10of the holy calling to love as you have loved
- 6:16us. In Jesus' name, amen. I hope you took from
- 6:25that the humble beginnings, the spiritually motivated
- 6:30man, Valentinas, who gave us our roots and where
- 6:39we derive St. Valentine's Day for today. I hope
- 6:43you apply it to your current relationships and
- 6:47family, friends. I hope. that the meaning of
- 6:55devotion faithfulness and most importantly courage
- 7:03in the face of anguish thank you for joining
