- 0:22My dear friend Nascar Hall of Famer.
- 0:25He's won so many races in everything.
- 0:28Mark Martin, Mark, thanks for joining us.
- 0:31It's good to Be With You. Kenny, can't wait to do this
- 0:33thing. You got a beautiful home there,
- 0:35buddy. I love your roof.
- 0:37It looks very nice. Thank you.
- 0:39This is a library. I don't spend much time in here.
- 0:42Yeah. Well Mark, you know what?
- 0:44We'll just jump right into it. It you know, they can t
- 0:48conversation is just that it's a conversation you and I have
- 0:52known each other forever but the fans Mark, they love you.
- 0:57And the first thing they'll want to know is what is Mark Martin
- 1:01up to? Where is he at?
- 1:02What's going on, man? I'm living life.
- 1:06I don't know how you could possibly be.
- 1:08So dang busy and be retired. I sure didn't have time.
- 1:14You know, I wouldn't have time for a job right now.
- 1:17Yeah, there you just say I don't know stay really busy doing do
- 1:22the things, I love, you know, get to see some family made, you
- 1:27know, some friends and just living living the good life.
- 1:33You know more we have so much to talk about.
- 1:35I've made notes my friend but I get to see your fans.
- 1:40Do see you on social media and we've had this conversation
- 1:44before you said to me Herrmann. You got that dirt car and I have
- 1:49this motor home, buddy. Those motor homes, that you are
- 1:53building for yourself, are absolutely a piece of artwork,
- 1:58by the way, thank you for sharing your newest build.
- 2:02Tell us how this motor home RV. How this this started?
- 2:10Well, first of all for the ones that aren't following along if
- 2:14they want to, they can go to one Mark Martin on the Instagram or
- 2:18the art of the Mark, Martin official page on Facebook,
- 2:23either one. And so this, this build started
- 2:29about, you know, about six months ago and we just had the
- 2:36one up, it's my thing just like you like your Dirt modifieds, or
- 2:43we need to have a thing, right? Without a thing, I'm in trouble,
- 2:46we all are, you know, I'm in big trouble.
- 2:49I I need to have something that, you know, occupies my, my time
- 2:56and my brain and gives me drive and and, and all that stuff.
- 3:03So, you know, I really love these things.
- 3:06I like getting around. I like going around in them but
- 3:09I like As much designing and finishing and protect and
- 3:15perfecting as as I do anything, it's the process.
- 3:20It's just like building that new race car every year.
- 3:24You know, when we started racing, I don't know about you
- 3:27but you know, we built a new, I built it, we built a new late
- 3:31model every year and you built it better than the one before
- 3:36and that's kind of what what I do now.
- 3:39It's what What what? I enjoy built a new one about
- 3:43every three years. The last this is my third one
- 3:48in, you know, in six years. So it's going to last me.
- 3:55I'm planning on it. Sticking with me more than three
- 3:58years for sure. This one were taking it to the
- 4:03next level. So you know more, I see what's
- 4:06going on. You build these beautiful motor
- 4:09homes. Those buses I think bus is a
- 4:13more high-end word for you. Build these you use them for
- 4:17three years, they have the Mark Martin effect.
- 4:19They're absolutely beautiful. The wiring you know we get to
- 4:22watch it be built and then I see people lining up to pay you if
- 4:27not the same more for this beautiful bus because you've had
- 4:31it for three years, have you had people already call you yet for
- 4:35this one? You're building this?
- 4:38Well, not for the one. I Holding the one, the one that
- 4:43we have now presently is been spoken for for, I don't know, 99
- 4:50months or so a long time. Yeah, yeah, a good solid, nine
- 4:54months. So it's spoken for I wish I
- 5:01could buy one for me. I mean, in the work that I put
- 5:05into one after it's finished is just astronomical.
- 5:09Comical just making it mine and perfecting things and making
- 5:17things work even better. And I just fix my thing.
- 5:22You know, I don't like to be the handyman around the house, I do
- 5:26the things that I got to do, but you know, vehicles are not
- 5:32really my thing. Golfing, you know, this is my
- 5:36golf game. Yeah, I mean, it is, you know,
- 5:39it is. It's just what I love, is what I
- 5:41love to do, you know, Mark? I just, I just thought I just
- 5:44saw. I told my son-in-law Brody, I
- 5:48said Brody, I said for the last six months, my life has been
- 5:53changing a little bit. You know, you know, I've got to
- 5:57torn tendons in my shoulder. I've got a little spot in my
- 6:01eye. Now, I've got cortisone shots in
- 6:03both my knees. He's, I've got a fractured ball
- 6:06in my foot. I've got to find something that
- 6:11will occupy my time because I'm like, you Mark, if I don't go up
- 6:17to that shop and Tinker with my race car to see, you know, this
- 6:21all my work is in that shop going to the racetrack second,
- 6:25right? So Mark, I understand what
- 6:28you're saying, you have your motor home and I have my Race
- 6:32shop so like like you, you know, I'm trying to wean myself a
- 6:38little bit off this race car because my body starting to fall
- 6:42apart your because I work on the car, Yeah, I know about the body
- 6:47falling apart. How am I gonna do?
- 6:52Yeah, I got quarters own shots in both knees.
- 6:54Just recently. What are the me Brothers?
- 6:57Yeah, buddy, you'd never know. That Kenny Wallace was dealing
- 7:02with pain, you know, you would never know that.
- 7:06Yeah, we the same with me, you'd never know it but, you know,
- 7:10from social media or whatever, but you know, chronic pain dude.
- 7:14Chronic you know. I got mine, he's jacked up, I
- 7:20had a horse. I had a total reverse shoulder
- 7:23replacement last summer and it's doing well and and I'm having a
- 7:30rotator cuff repair and in June of this year.
- 7:35So I'm going to be out of commission.
- 7:37Again for those those shoulder repairs.
- 7:41Those those shoulder surgeries are are probably the most major
- 7:45ones that You can do and, you know, I have reoccurring back
- 7:50issues, you know, my back will be strong as an ox solid as a
- 7:56rock and then out of nowhere, a little Fair up and give me hell
- 8:01for long periods of time. So yeah, that's part of getting
- 8:05old and part of going hard and we have both done that.
- 8:10Yeah. Well more, you're still the man
- 8:12you're a legend. I know you're hard core meaning
- 8:15that You know, you're all about business.
- 8:18Let's change it up a little bit. So, you know, like I said,
- 8:22you've done it all Mark and NASCAR, you're a winner, you're
- 8:24a Hall of Famer but I believe You know, besides you and I
- 8:30being Forever Friends. You know, the reason I say that
- 8:33is because when I was 12 I was watching you race.
- 8:37You know, my brother Rusty at Lake Ozark, Empire Fair grounds
- 8:41and Springfield Fort Smith Arkansas.
- 8:44That's that's just a little bit of the background so I was able
- 8:47to watch Mark Martin grow up and what I think is stuck beside you
- 8:52being great. And Mark, by the way,
- 8:55congratulations on. Once again, that's an easy
- 8:58decision. Even one of the greatest race
- 9:00car drivers in NASCAR history is really nice gift, they give you.
- 9:06Thank you, thank you. I appreciate that.
- 9:09Yeah, you're the man. My question is this, I believe
- 9:14you're your greatest accomplishment, is the greatest
- 9:18race car drivers to ever live. Mark.
- 9:21Martin Rusty Wallace Dale Earnhardt, senior?
- 9:24They respect you like like, retha Franklin, Capital re
- 9:29spectre-2, you got to know that everybody looks at you with
- 9:35just, they're just like, oh my God, Mark Martin, when, when did
- 9:40you know that that was happening?
- 9:42Is there a span of five years? Was it 1999, tell me about this
- 9:48respect that you definitely deserve.
- 9:53I think it all starts back from, you know, 19 probably 77, when
- 9:59Rusty and I were racing and And learning how to race with Dick
- 10:08Trickle and Bob sin occur and Tom reffner.
- 10:14And, you know, some of the legendary short track racers
- 10:18learning the code adhering to the code racing with them.
- 10:25And working in respect is just not something that you can, you
- 10:30can't, you can't buy it and you can't force it.
- 10:34It. You can't make anybody do that.
- 10:37You don't get it. Do you win?
- 10:38You get it cuz you do it. Proper?
- 10:40Is that right? All right.
- 10:41I think that respect comes through time and you earn it.
- 10:47I agree. And and and it does it takes a
- 10:50long time, you know, to build that.
- 10:53And that the respect that I have been given by the competitors
- 11:01has been, you know, the crown jewel of my Career and it, it
- 11:07took a long time to build that to where it is today.
- 11:11So, so glad to hear you say that, you know, that some people
- 11:14like to go, no, no. But, you know, Mark you and I
- 11:18know that in the day 1970s through the 80s, the great state
- 11:25of Wisconsin was the epicenter of asphalt short track racing
- 11:29in. They would they would paint,
- 11:31they would paint a white line around the Middle of the
- 11:34racetrack. And if somebody was on your
- 11:36outside and you moved up into that outer Lane, they were Black
- 11:41Flag. You you you and I know that, you
- 11:45know, the great Dale senior also said give me a line.
- 11:49Give me a line and Mark II know that you always gave another
- 11:53racer Elaine to race. You Well, that was part of the
- 11:59culture. You know, we're just very
- 12:03sportsmanlike, you know, we believed in May the best man
- 12:09win, we competed fiercely. Yes, but there wasn't any
- 12:15underhanded, you know, Shenanigans pulled?
- 12:19It was, you know, may the best man win today, and if I got
- 12:24beat, I went straight to the shop and I learned at an early
- 12:29age, when I was racing, Against Wayne Brooks and then later
- 12:35Larry, Carson, and then later Larry Phillips, and then later
- 12:40Dick Trickle. And then later Dale Earnhardt.
- 12:43Wow, that I could win. I could beat them if I made my
- 12:48car, good enough. And if I didn't, I wouldn't, I
- 12:53never considered out driving those guys.
- 12:56I just tried to beat them and I had to beat them with a better
- 13:01car and that's where I kept. My focus author of The all
- 13:05through my career was on the vehicle.
- 13:08Mark, I love that conversation because, you know, I grew up
- 13:11with you and Rusty and Mark Martin.
- 13:14And that's one thing that Rusty my brother pounded into my head
- 13:19was quit. Putting So much pressure on your
- 13:22ability as a driver. You know, when we were kids we
- 13:26went to the local go-kart track and we'd watch those go-kart go
- 13:30around and we always wanted the fastest Go-Kart.
- 13:33We didn't say put me on the slowest one so it was you and
- 13:36Rusty and Larry fellows that said, you know, make your car
- 13:42faster. So, I guess the question is, do
- 13:45you feel like some of these kids nowadays?
- 13:47Not, not that there's anything wrong with anybody.
- 13:49Do you think maybe people? Us focus on the speed of the
- 13:53car? Well, I mean, it's just a
- 13:58different age in a different era and these kids come up, you
- 14:02know, we didn't have any video games to play or or iRacing or
- 14:08anything like that, simulation of any sort.
- 14:11So these guys cook, you know, from really little kids, start
- 14:17racing cars even though it's Simulated and they evolve right
- 14:24into the driver's seat of a race car and it's just that's
- 14:28different and it's not all bad. I might have been a better
- 14:33driver if I would have put a little bit of emphasis in phasis
- 14:37on myself, but I never thought about it, you know, I mean, I
- 14:42just did what I did and I drove like, I drove and I tried to
- 14:46learn and improve. But if I you know who knows if I
- 14:51would have, studied the craft even harder than then I did, you
- 14:59know, in a similar way that I did the car side of it in the
- 15:03hardware side of it, who knows? It could even possibly been
- 15:07better. But today, you know, most
- 15:09drivers don't know anything about their cars and that's
- 15:13okay. I mean there's engineers and
- 15:16there's a team of people behind them to make them I know when
- 15:20you and I got started racing, it was us, it was us, it was up to
- 15:26us, there was nobody there was nobody around us that was more
- 15:31knowledgeable about those cars than we were always said you
- 15:36needed, was somebody to tell Mark Martin went to Pitt.
- 15:38He said his own race car up. Well, we all I mean you to you
- 15:43work on race cars. Way before you ever started
- 15:47racing. Kenny.
- 15:48And, you know, that's just that you know, that that's just the
- 15:54part of it. We studied the cars and we knew
- 15:57that if we made our cars, been head, man, I paid attention.
- 16:01I got, you know, you'd have a guy who ran in the back all the
- 16:04time and all of a sudden he's running mid Pat and I bet he's
- 16:10over there go around his car, not that he would ever outrun
- 16:15me. But he's done something to
- 16:18improve his deal. Let me see what that is, you
- 16:22know, and those are secrets now that, you know, you can't, it's
- 16:28as much different more difficult to look at other people's stuff
- 16:31as it was, you know, when we came up hey we're a trustee and
- 16:35I would tell each other what we had in our cars, all the way
- 16:39through his final year in, you know, in 85.
- 16:44I mean 05:18 05 arrestees last year, old 506.
- 16:50I forgot to. Yeah, I think it's been a long
- 16:54time. Yeah, I think it was 2005.
- 16:56So you know all through our careers if we weren't running
- 17:01worth a damn we could go see each other and say look man I
- 17:06ain't Runnin with the damn. What are you guys doing?
- 17:08Teammates? What do you got?
- 17:11Yeah, and Rusty would always tell me.
- 17:15And, and I would always tell you Ralph, he's driving for Penske
- 17:20and you're sharing exact truth information.
- 17:23Yeah. You know, and the thing about my
- 17:26relationship with Rusty, was so cool because I came to Lake what
- 17:33Lake Hill Speedway. Yeah.
- 17:35Valley Park Missouri. Yeah.
- 17:37And 70s. Yeah.
- 17:39I remember think it was, I was going somewhere and I pop in
- 17:43there to watch him race and he was so damaged.
- 17:45Excited. Oh well where Mark Martin it was
- 17:48there it shocked the whole racetrack.
- 17:51Well this guy came over and said Rusty how much toe out you run
- 17:58he said I run five eight. Ten.
- 18:02What I mean, what else? Of course he was lying to the
- 18:04guy and but he never lied to me ever.
- 18:09So that was, that was a really strong bond because I
- 18:13appreciated that that night he was running second together,
- 18:17Meyer, and I know. Yeah, he run Pete.
- 18:21He spun his ass out to get rid of that.
- 18:23Damn, thing, Rusty, spun Lynn out because you were there.
- 18:27He wanted this exactly right. He's fumbling out and you're
- 18:32like what do you do that for? So Mark, listen to.
- 18:37This is the Kenny conversation. It's not an interview we're
- 18:41discussing. So you kind of led me in this
- 18:44area. There's no doubt in my mind that
- 18:48you were in my area. I was born in 1963, you were the
- 18:53first driver I ever witnessed in my life to come along at like
- 18:5712, 14 years old, you are running, are going a essay at,
- 19:0215 years old and winning the biggest races of all time.
- 19:07What was it like for you to be increased child and winning
- 19:13these, 400 lap races? You remember about that?
- 19:18Well, to get accurate dead on accurate.
- 19:23You know, I was running art go races in at 8:00 at 18 but I was
- 19:28110 pounds and look 10, you did and that was an 18 was a big
- 19:35big. Big deal back then back then
- 19:38it's old now. But back then it was increase,
- 19:41you know? I mean ever people are losing
- 19:43their mind because this kid, you know, was was racing with these
- 19:48hot. Hot dogs and everyone swallowed
- 19:50beating me and we beat we beat Larry several times at
- 19:55Springfield the fairgrounds which was a huge deal, prestonby
- 20:00Rusty, beat us Larry and I a few times as well.
- 20:04Larry got his share as well but you know, that's kind of where
- 20:10it started when when when I was able to beat Larry at
- 20:13Springfield, that was a big deal in 76.
- 20:17I was still running my leg. Late model, and dirt car.
- 20:20And I went to Bolivar for a big race and they had a bounty on
- 20:25Ken essary and God. Yes, sir.
- 20:30And I had to make my way into the race through the sea.
- 20:34Then the B, then the A and I didn't know how to run dry slick
- 20:39because it was mud tracks in clay back where I came from.
- 20:44And we started the back hook. The bottom.
- 20:48There's moisture there. Everybody's running the black.
- 20:51I just passed some cars passing car.
- 20:53When the checkered flag came out.
- 20:54I didn't even know I won. Oh my God.
- 20:56You were so focused? Yeah, I wonder race.
- 20:59And can I think from looking back on it?
- 21:01I think Ken run second, but, you know, there were gold, you know,
- 21:05there were there were Legends in that race and I was 17 years old
- 21:10and didn't have a clue. Good thing you didn't know who
- 21:12they were. I hardly I hardly knew ya.
- 21:17I had heard of Canada essary, but anyway, that was a huge win
- 21:23in my career and then the following year, you know, we
- 21:28managed to beat Larry of few times and then we, you know, and
- 21:32I believe it's around September. They have a national short,
- 21:37track championship at Rockford. Illinois, hmm.
- 21:40And we thought, well, let's go. B roll up to the National short
- 21:45track Championship will get the race with the greatest in the
- 21:47nation and you did and we and we set s fast time trickles.
- 21:54Fast time. We were second fastest time in
- 21:56all the legend. I look back.
- 21:58You know it's 1977 all the Legends were there all the short
- 22:01track Legends were there and I had some help in the inverted.
- 22:0512 cars and 200 lapper and I had some help in the race.
- 22:09Some of the few of the hot dogs had some problems.
- 22:14But we won that race and we had no idea.
- 22:20And if you want to know what the biggest win of my career, is
- 22:23that contends for the biggest win of my career was
- 22:28unbelievable. We had no idea.
- 22:30We could do something like that. And so, you know, that just, you
- 22:35know, that that sort of went along with picking up other
- 22:40other wins and you know, winning a sa races, it was seven.
- 22:44Eight before one, a sa race. It won the championship to and
- 22:4878 at 19 years old. And that might as well been 12,
- 22:53you know, back then people you know and all of that stuff just
- 22:58continued to springboard me toward NASCAR and you know in
- 23:051980, we won our third, a shm chip in a row and had to
- 23:10Credible had the most incredible season you could have.
- 23:14I've ever had with a car with a revolutionary car that Ray
- 23:19Dylan. And I designed together that
- 23:23everybody had to have, I mean your brother had to buy one Dick
- 23:27Trickle had about you know I got one in 1986 they the best.
- 23:32Yeah, everybody had to have one, it was.
- 23:34Um but anyway after that year it was like dude I got a it's time
- 23:40to make the spring you know it's time to take the kept so we just
- 23:47you know it was like climbing a ladder or climbing a set of
- 23:54stairs. It was one rung at a time just
- 23:57like the respect it was gained just you know announce had a
- 24:01time until it finally added up to you know pound yeah.
- 24:07So This conversation and listening to you, you said at
- 24:12Rockford, you know, they inverted the field, you had some
- 24:15help along the way. I mean, this with love, I'm not
- 24:19picking on you. Do you ever think that you're,
- 24:23you're too hard on yourself? Yeah, I'm way too hard on myself
- 24:30and it's a curse, but it is who I am.
- 24:34I have learned to embrace who I am and to minorly tweak who I am
- 24:42is possible, but to change who I am.
- 24:47Ain't going to work, incoming, it causes problems tried to do
- 24:51it, and in the end, it's it cause more problems than just
- 24:57embracing who and what you are. So yeah, I'm pretty rough on
- 25:00myself. Hi.
- 25:04And, you know, known to be kind of humble, and I'll step outside
- 25:09of being humble at times. But publicly, it's important for
- 25:16people to know That I got my ass kicked and I and it wasn't easy
- 25:24for me and I Rose to the top of motor sports at a super early
- 25:32age and then I fell flat on my face and lost it all and that
- 25:38changed me, you know, to that change me to The Humble side
- 25:45which is a good side. I mean I don't know how I would
- 25:49have turned out had I not had that humongous failure in 1982
- 25:53and 83 so I don't want to beat a dead horse that that story might
- 26:00have been told but I don't think it's real popular.
- 26:03You're saying that you think throughout your life?
- 26:07That was the turning point of when you you you were you're
- 26:11doing your deal but you went to NASCAR, it didn't work, you came
- 26:16back, then you get the coffin, You Know, Jack Roush and meal.
- 26:21But when you went back to NASCAR that's when you said You feel
- 26:25like that's when you changed a little bit, being a little more
- 26:28hardcore. I changed, I still was pretty
- 26:33hardcore. I didn't have to work on my race
- 26:36cars anymore. Yeah.
- 26:39So I had great smart people. That could work on them, but
- 26:42that moment of failure that that two years were you known ask,
- 26:47you know, it didn't work for you.
- 26:48NASCAR you, I think what I'm hearing is that you said that
- 26:53ain't gonna happen again. Yeah.
- 26:56Well, I was careful. I wasn't careful.
- 26:58The first time I had a little a S18 with a little group of guys
- 27:02that change did Fabulous pit stops and everything else and we
- 27:06went we went NASCAR racing in 81 and in are In our third race, we
- 27:16sit on the pole and finished 11th and in the fourth race.
- 27:20We we rinse, we we qualify. We finished third in the fourth
- 27:28race or the fifth race. We ran we set on the pole and I
- 27:35started one lap down last place one lap down because the car.
- 27:40David loving, dog, forgotten left a rag in the carburetor and
- 27:44put the Cleaner on it. So it wouldn't star.
- 27:47It's a long story short. We were banging Wheels with Dale
- 27:50Earnhardt, and Richard Petty, and all those guys, we were
- 27:53doing pit stops. We finished third at
- 27:55Martinsville. Doing pit stops against jr.
- 27:58Johnson, and we own a sa team it, but more and everything.
- 28:02So we thought I so I thought I was Hot Stuff.
- 28:06Hmm, never thought about that. Well, after after that last
- 28:11race, that, that Martin's that At Richmond race.
- 28:15We've been home and I was working in my uninsulated pole.
- 28:19Barn in North Liberty in Indiana.
- 28:21I remember and the phone rings and it's is hello Mark that's
- 28:28what l Wilson. Hmm.
- 28:30Like to know if you'd be interested in driving the 28 car
- 28:34oh my I never knew this. Yeah the 28 car that sat on the
- 28:39pole and Daytona and 1982 but I'd have been in that car.
- 28:44Of course, Benny Parsons was in it and he got fired after seven
- 28:47races. So who's to say I would have
- 28:49succeeded, I don't know that I was ready to drive better than
- 28:52Benny Parsons. Anyway, you know what I said,
- 28:57Obviously, no. Now, what else I'd rather do my
- 29:01own, I'd rather do my own deal. Wow.
- 29:04And because I would have the fire, David loving, dog, banjo,
- 29:09grim, and I had to get rid of prototype engines.
- 29:13That was given me free engines, and I just would have had to
- 29:20adjust didn't seem like anything besides.
- 29:22I thought I could beat them, I don't run third.
- 29:26You know, set on Two Poles, out of five races.
- 29:28I thought man, I can't take my little program.
- 29:31I don't need no sponsor. I win a race in the first five
- 29:34six, eight, ten, races, and I'll Be A Millionaire and I'll be
- 29:39NASCAR. So I did it even ready.
- 29:45I'll move to Charlotte built me. A car went to Daytona.
- 29:53Run terrible and blew up and had to fire my crew chief on the
- 29:57Sunday morning before the race. So, I'll, you know, I left
- 30:02Daytona broke and we never ran as good the whole year.
- 30:08I ran the whole year, but I went broke.
- 30:11And at the end of the year, I had to have an auction and sell,
- 30:13every everything I owned in the shop.
- 30:16This is painful to pay off Goodyear and Hutchison pagan.
- 30:22And I paid him off and I said I'll never own a race team
- 30:24again. Yeah.
- 30:26And So I got the call in December, or early January, Mark
- 30:36is JD Stacy. You want to drive the 2 car?
- 30:39That's the 2 car. That Tim, which Richmond won two
- 30:42races in, in 82. And I said, hell yeah, I had no
- 30:47idea that the team was going broke and that day linman
- 30:50wouldn't be there anymore in, you know, it was underfunded
- 30:55instead of being the team that it was the year in 82.
- 30:58To. He didn't tell you the details
- 31:00and seven races. Well, hell I was so confident in
- 31:04myself. He said well I'll get you a
- 31:06lawyer. Do up a contract with Sony, no
- 31:08contract, You know? I mean, no contract will just do
- 31:14this deal. So we ran seven races and I got
- 31:17fired. Hmm.
- 31:19Said they wanted wanted somebody with more experience.
- 31:23And we'd run seventh and third, you know, and, you know, was we
- 31:28ran good, but not good enough and so after getting fired.
- 31:34Nope. Nobody NASCAR would touch me.
- 31:37So this is, that's okay, absolutely retail.
- 31:41So I had to had to move back to Wisconsin first guy called Ray
- 31:45Dylan because I free cars is what I used to get them back.
- 31:49You said, Mark days of free cars are over I had no money.
- 31:57I had no tool. I had nothing.
- 32:00And so it was hell. Getting us getting a program
- 32:06going for 1984, and we managed to win one sa race and some work
- 32:13go races. And the next year, I got to go
- 32:16drive for Jerry gunderman with Miller High Life is sponsorship
- 32:20and Jimmy Finning as Crew Chief and we won you.
- 32:26No four races. And but we blew too many Motors
- 32:31because it was, we, we had run Neal prototype doing Ford motors
- 32:36and he didn't have it perfected yet.
- 32:39And so then in 86, we won five races in the championship and at
- 32:45the end of the year, I got a call to go Busch Racing for more
- 32:52money than I was making an AAS, a winning the championship and
- 32:56Jimmy Finney. Had the opportunity to go be
- 32:59Bobby. Allison's, crew, chief in
- 33:01NASCAR. And Jimmy said, I ain't going,
- 33:05if you stay and I said, well, then we're both going because I
- 33:09could not bear the thought of Jimmy, finding not taking, you
- 33:13know, the NASCAR opportunity. So when Jack Daniels, so we 13
- 33:20Busch races and maybe seven after the second win, you know,
- 33:26our third wind Jack, you know, No calls.
- 33:28And I didn't really have any plans on going NASCAR racing
- 33:33again, but You know, the deal seemed, right?
- 33:38I went and met with Jack and I didn't ask him what he was going
- 33:42to pay. I asked him how many tires he's
- 33:45going to buy, who he's going higher?
- 33:47What kind of car is going to use?
- 33:49And could we test enough? He said we're doing all laugh.
- 33:55We stood up and shook hands. And I found out later that what
- 34:00I was getting paid and it it wasn't much but it didn't
- 34:03matter. I wanted another chance and Jack
- 34:07Roush was the only person Willing to give me a chance,
- 34:12give me another second chance. And for that reason, and others
- 34:20I stayed with him. For 19 years, Mark, let me tell
- 34:24you, I read books before and I learned what the word
- 34:29cautionary, tale means it means listen to this story caution
- 34:34because, you know, Rusty. My big brother taught me this
- 34:38saying, and I shared on social media every once in While and it
- 34:42goes like this it's sad to say but you have to remind people
- 34:46every once in a while because they remember what they want to
- 34:49and what you just told me was a cautionary tale that Mark Martin
- 34:54just didn't jump into NASCAR and kick their butt you you had a
- 34:59rough road. Now when you got back there and
- 35:01you got settled, you became a Hall of Fame racer but it is an
- 35:06incredible cautionary tale. You know it wasn't a better
- 35:10roses. I really appreciate you that
- 35:12telling me that story well that all comes back to you know the
- 35:17thing. Cautionary tale careful of being
- 35:21overconfident. Yeah.
- 35:24You know and I had confidence. I had a damn reason to be
- 35:27confident. That's why you are the way you
- 35:29are. You just told example just told
- 35:31you why that explains, you know, the in the modesty you have
- 35:39Euphoria, you're just Just, you know, dude, I took a beat-down
- 35:44and my story is not what happened.
- 35:48After my first NASCAR win. Rice story is what happened
- 35:53leading up to that? That is the real story, and
- 35:56that's what we're working on someday.
- 36:00We will have a really kicked butt book.
- 36:03We've been working on it already a year and it may be another,
- 36:08you know, maybe another year or two before it's available.
- 36:11But it's you know, it's going to detail a lot about what led up
- 36:17to my childhood and what shaped me into the person I was and
- 36:21then how I got myself into a situation of being overconfident
- 36:27and not knowing, you know, I didn't ever go to, I'd never
- 36:31been in the pits of a NASCAR race when I showed up for my
- 36:34first cup race. I never even been anything, but
- 36:38in the grandstands. So I didn't know what I was
- 36:40getting into. so, I read You know, I just I'm not I mean I am
- 36:46a I am a horse with blinders on when I need to be but I do have
- 36:50peripheral vision as you're going through this book that
- 36:54will come out. Whenever it comes out that
- 36:56you're talking about right now is this book therapeutic for
- 37:01you? Or is there a lot of pain going
- 37:05through writing this book. I've been able to suppress the
- 37:09pain so I you know, I'm at Total Comfort.
- 37:14With all the hardship that I went through, I'm grateful for
- 37:18the failure because that's that made me the person I am today
- 37:23and I don't like to think about what I might be like.
- 37:27Had I gone to the Daytona 500 1982 in the, in the in the 28
- 37:33car. Yeah, right.
- 37:34And won the Daytona 500. I shudder to think the man that
- 37:39I would be today. I just, I'm grateful.
- 37:45For my experiences, we had a lot of disappointment in NASCAR,
- 37:51especially in the 6 car and the Roush days and I'm not bitter
- 37:57about that. I'm just damn thankful that I
- 38:01got to work a lot, buddy. Yeah, came out alive.
- 38:05You know just cheese. Think about think about all the
- 38:10great people in Motorsports. I got to work with and all the
- 38:14great. Things in all the checkered
- 38:17flags and all the good days, you know, a lot of people want them,
- 38:21you know? Talk about, you know, talk crap
- 38:24about that. I didn't win a championship.
- 38:26Oh, that's right. Yeah, those are the to be Mark.
- 38:29They're meant to be, or they call me mister second place.
- 38:34Well, I accidentally stumbled into 96 NASCAR wins and, you
- 38:41know, in the top three Series. So I'm a beating Mr. Second
- 38:46place, understand that but I accidentally screwed up and 196
- 38:52of them. And you know, when you think
- 38:54about and that's getting away from being modest but it's
- 38:57truth, you know, here in this cuz I think everybody's like
- 39:01this I got a text the other day that said that in a hunt, I
- 39:10believe it was 101 races or something like that.
- 39:16There was either first or second.
- 39:18Yeah. Okay.
- 39:19So he'll i-140. So only rent, you know, like 61
- 39:23times I run s. So uh, yeah.
- 39:26Ran second morning room first. I, I'm sorry.
- 39:30I apologize if that hurts your feelings but I'm pretty damn
- 39:33happy about it. You know, makes it means.
- 39:36I ran good. Those people that talk like
- 39:39that, they're not happy with themselves, so they want to lash
- 39:43out, you know, and What I would say to those people.
- 39:46First of all is go f yourself. Charlie won't let me cuss on
- 39:53these shows, but I say it just hardcore.
- 39:55Look, go and what's your endgame here bud?
- 39:58You doing this to make your self feel better but let's lighten it
- 40:01up a little bit. Mark your first row.
- 40:03You're the man. You are your listen, that Hall
- 40:07of Fame is no joke, that's one tough ass group and if you're in
- 40:11the Hall of Fame, you somebody, so you're somebody, let's
- 40:14lighten it up a little little bit because I do want to talk a
- 40:16little bit of NASCAR. This one's might catch you off
- 40:20guard a little bit. But let's let's talk about your
- 40:22son. Matt, I love him.
- 40:24He is such a well structured man.
- 40:27And it is totally shocked me that he collects fictional books
- 40:34sells them, tell me about Matt. I wish he was right next to you
- 40:37right now. Well, his his passion is Sort of
- 40:47rare books that sort of what his passion is.
- 40:50So he you know, that that's what he would love to be in business
- 40:56doing. So he's set up a rose rare
- 41:00books. I see him and he has a lot of
- 41:03first edition first printing books that and you know it's you
- 41:08know he's got a couple from 1860 something so he's got lots of
- 41:14books. It's that are over 100 years old
- 41:16that are in pristine condition and so that's kind of his
- 41:20passion but what he's done you know lately has been to start
- 41:29Mark Martin Archive of it all started with the book so he
- 41:35thought its Rampage will help promote this book.
- 41:39So we started that. Well it just blew up and went
- 41:41crazy and he's such a perfectionist in things.
- 41:45I have been G shirts and I wear them and that he has sir, you
- 41:49look good in hotel. So, anyway, long story short,
- 41:54Mark, Martin, archive on Instagram, kind of started that
- 42:00and then, you know, people start going on merchandise.
- 42:05So, and, you know this, but you're the most of the
- 42:09listeners, don't know this. So we open a store Mark, Martin
- 42:14archive.com. Mom.
- 42:17And nobody has any idea how hard it is to get the approvals to do
- 42:24any diecast for example, you know, the first first thing
- 42:30would come out of the gate, want to do, want to do the Folgers
- 42:34car, nobody on the face of the Earth, knows how to get a hold
- 42:37of the Folgers legal team that would approve it.
- 42:43But, you know, through a chain of events and about sticks.
- 42:46Six months of working on it. We made that happen.
- 42:50Got the same thing from Stroh though, you'll never get any you
- 42:53know, you'll never get approval from Stroh's will.
- 42:55Matt actually was able to reach out through their social media.
- 43:02Got into the right contact. So we long story short, my first
- 43:07win diecast from 1989 Rockingham.
- 43:11Yeah is in, this is great story, it is up for pre-order, it's
- 43:17going to come out. Probably in June there's not
- 43:20many left. There's only going to be 700
- 43:23made in real it's real. It's the it's the real deal.
- 43:30It has As at the end of that race, it had silver Wheels on
- 43:35the left and black wheels on the right and guess who the silver
- 43:40Wheels came from? Rusty Wallace.
- 43:44Was it the Gatorade car? What, what weirdo?
- 43:48I think he was in the Kodiak car, okay, and in 89, he was in
- 43:53that could but he runs several wheels and we must have my guys
- 43:57must have traded tires to get the Stagger where we want it.
- 44:00We did that back then. Any Gap, you know, you would say
- 44:04that. So anyway, long story short, he
- 44:06did that, got that got the Folgers win from North
- 44:09Wilkesboro that cars up for pre-order, got the Taliban
- 44:14Dakar, where we were in 500 miles and the in averaged 180,
- 44:20eight point three, four, five hundred miles.
- 44:23It was caution-free, 500 miles an hour in 1997.
- 44:27Talladega, that record will never be broken 180. 8.34.
- 44:34So that's up for pre-order. We got that approval and gosh,
- 44:39there's another super cool Zone that this is your son, doing all
- 44:43this. Yeah, he's doing it all.
- 44:44I mean, I've helped him some, I helped get the folders.
- 44:50Thing. But beyond that and I got got
- 44:54him the right babbling contacts, but and he's working with Lionel
- 44:59for that. But he's also doing incredible
- 45:01retro t-shirts, that just blowing everybody way.
- 45:04So that's Matt his his real passion is rare books.
- 45:10But his passion right now is been learning about my career,
- 45:13he knows more about Reggie's career than I do and he knows
- 45:18more about my career than I do. Except for predating, you know,
- 45:25my sake stuff. I know everything in every time,
- 45:30every time there's a hair out of place on that deal, I know.
- 45:34But I lost track in NASCAR because I didn't build those
- 45:39cars. My hands weren't all over them
- 45:42and it, you know, so so I don't know.
- 45:45But I can tell you what Springs and the entire setup from
- 45:49Rockford. When and Rockford Third,
- 45:51National short track Championship will tell you what
- 45:53was tell you, what was under the car and tell you what was under
- 45:57the car to waso Michigan earlier that year or New Smyrna.
- 46:03And our first race that year, I know what Springs and sway, bar,
- 46:06and weight distribution, everything.
- 46:09And that means you're sharp. That your, our bodies might be
- 46:13getting a little old, but you're sharp.
- 46:15And I must say that. Matt, Matt does share some
- 46:18pictures with me, you know, we got each other.
- 46:20Number and he'll send me a picture and the one my phone's
- 46:24right here, but I don't want to take the time to look at it.
- 46:27The most famous one that I like lately is you and Rusty at
- 46:32Springfield with Rusty's bread truck and I think Rusty stand up
- 46:38and you're kind of laying down a little bit but those pictures
- 46:42are magical. And I do want to comment on
- 46:44something else that you said you're building 700 of these
- 46:48numbers sixth Rose cars. Is that right?
- 46:52That's all are going to be made. That's what I want to make a
- 46:55point about you're the real deal.
- 46:57We're not making more just 708 up.
- 47:00Yeah it ain't about its immediate collector's item.
- 47:03Yeah they're going to immediately be worth 200 bucks
- 47:07the first day one and only going to go up from there, that's
- 47:11Matt's deal. It ain't about, it's about
- 47:13collector's item. So all these die casts are going
- 47:16to be limited only to Like I know the Talladega car, you
- 47:24know, there's like 400 signed and 300 unsigned Mark.
- 47:30Martin archive exclusively.com is selling them and last I
- 47:35checked there was like 12 autographed ones, left the rest
- 47:39are already sold out, say there's only a badass, there's
- 47:42only about a hundred, you know, 100 of the unsigned left and
- 47:48they're going to, they're going to they're not even To start
- 47:50delivering until June. Yeah, I love it.
- 47:54Well Mark, let's change the subject a little bit.
- 47:56We're coming down to the end here.
- 47:58I want to talk NASCAR just a little bit and then I want to
- 48:01ask you one final question. Mark, you know your voice
- 48:05matters? You people listen to you.
- 48:08So I've got to ask you about, NASCAR, this new next-gen car.
- 48:17What is your thoughts on just that car?
- 48:21Coming in and ask our first thought that comes to mind.
- 48:25It is not a popular fan, you know, opinion.
- 48:31But I've seen the best racing in NASCAR history.
- 48:36Since that Cars come out, I agree.
- 48:38Best racing on track in history, the best and histories, so stop
- 48:44complaining about it, right? Um, the other side of it is I
- 48:48don't like it would hate. It would hate to be driving.
- 48:52Now the guys hate working on them and they ain't saved no
- 48:56money yet. So I'm not a lover of the car.
- 49:01It looks like a sports car underneath, you know, it doesn't
- 49:05look like a NASCAR car. I've already told you.
- 49:09I don't like sour grapes. I don't like old people saying
- 49:12how great it was when they were growing up and how junk it is
- 49:16now because I was a young guy and I had to listen to that when
- 49:20I was coming up and I'm not going to do that.
- 49:23It is what it is. The concept was solid.
- 49:27The concept of the car was solid.
- 49:32In the damn competition is. Unbelievable.
- 49:35So it is here, it's here to stay.
- 49:39Let's improve on it and go forward.
- 49:43The only other thing I want to say about NASCAR is you said my
- 49:47voice matters. I say it does.
- 49:49You got more questions about that car?
- 49:51It matters to fans. It doesn't matter to the
- 49:55important people. It doesn't matter that much to
- 49:58NASCAR. I've never had Add NASCAR's
- 50:01here. Like they'll senior had, you
- 50:04know, and I've never been a political guy, but, you know, it
- 50:12is what it is. That car is what it is.
- 50:15And we should just make the most of it going forward.
- 50:19So the other facet of this car is the crazy hard core Tech
- 50:25inspection that comes along with the penalties.
- 50:28So you and I right now, Now, we're breaking this car down and
- 50:32segments. I agree with you.
- 50:34Cars. Been incredible.
- 50:35I love the racing. Give me your opinion of the tech
- 50:39inspection and then the penalties that come out, you
- 50:43know, we race on Sunday, we get these, you know, the on
- 50:46Wednesday and Thursday. Give me your opinion on Tech
- 50:49inspection and penalties. I don't I don't like it.
- 50:56You know, I just reflect on Denny, Hamlin, getting the race
- 50:59taken away. Over a piece of helicopter, take
- 51:02understand. I get understand that Nascar has
- 51:07to have tight tolerances. Understand where we are today.
- 51:16Don't make me like it. I think that You know, these
- 51:24penalties have to be done. I don't like seeing appeals
- 51:31being overturned or lightened up.
- 51:36They didn't they didn't on mine my most critical one, you know,
- 51:41they should have. They should have rules Richmond.
- 51:45Yeah. Well, you know what?
- 51:46But but they did back in the day when they made a decision that
- 51:51was a decision. Now it's more complicated.
- 51:55What happened back in the day even in 19?
- 52:00In the mid-90s, you go to the racetrack, get beat, you come,
- 52:03cut the body off, you could push the tail to the right hand,
- 52:06pushing those to the left and the inch.
- 52:09You can't do that 70. Thousands of get you thrown out
- 52:14of here. Your fingernail your family.
- 52:17Yeah and that's the biggest tower, you know?
- 52:21There's a reason for that. So because we, we kept pushing
- 52:26and kept pushing and, you know, better.
- 52:29Now you you're, you know, more than I do.
- 52:32But I'll give you a good analogy.
- 52:36Dirt late models are the last best racing, we have because
- 52:43they have some rules but they don't have so dang many that you
- 52:48can't breathe and it's really cool and your modified stuff.
- 52:52Maybe I'm not as I have my finger on the pulse of the
- 52:55Davenport's car and team and program.
- 52:58So I kind of know I still and make but if you want able to
- 53:03enjoy dirt, late model it. It's Purity into the core and
- 53:08not just on track experience or product, you know, asphalt late
- 53:15models. It's over.
- 53:17It's just like, NASCAR. I mean it's, you can't do
- 53:20nothing and it happens all the time, these guys, you know, get
- 53:25wins taken away, the snowball Derby and this deal and that
- 53:28deal. It's the day we live in.
- 53:32There's so many smart people pushing so many buttons that you
- 53:37you had regulate. This first, you had a long
- 53:40template, everybody cheated all over the car everywhere else.
- 53:43So then you put cross templates on it, then you just cheated and
- 53:46everywhere else, then you put the cloth on it.
- 53:50Then you just cheat it in between the claw.
- 53:52You're taking us along the steps of all the insects.
- 53:55Yeah. And then you get the Eagle Eye
- 53:57skin thing you do and it's like that's how it is.
- 54:01It's how we do. We we forced it to be that way
- 54:05because there wasn't two or three, smart people around.
- 54:07There were hundreds doing it everywhere and you just
- 54:13shouldn't complain about all this Tech inspection stuff.
- 54:19It has To be tight in, it has to be enforced.
- 54:23So, I just want to, I got to go back because you brought it up.
- 54:28I'm going to say it and then I'll probably it might be said
- 54:31wrong but I want you to fix what I say.
- 54:35In my opinion, you were going to win the Nascar Cup Championship.
- 54:40But you were that motor in that race car had 21 Inch spacers, if
- 54:50it would have been welded together and then just the Solid
- 54:522 inch spacer, they would not have penalize you but that
- 54:57moment in time you were found to be illegal and it cost you the
- 55:02Nascar championship because they They took so many points away.
- 55:06You went to Atlanta, the motor burst in a ball of flames, which
- 55:09was a Yates motor now. Okay?
- 55:13Fix after that, was the year before.
- 55:16Okay, well, tell me it's okay, you're right, let's go to that
- 55:18panel. And that's what I want to talk
- 55:19about. All right.
- 55:20So, we there NASCAR's been allowing you to weld to the top
- 55:28of the intake manifold because people were fussing about some
- 55:33manufacturer had Short manifold and the carburetor spacer was
- 55:37only allowed to be inch and a half.
- 55:40I think it was at the time I think and so somebody's car
- 55:45intake was too short so they decided to let you weld on top
- 55:51of the intake manifold so you could weld 12 inches on the
- 55:54frickin manifold if you wanted. But on the letter of the law of
- 55:59a spacer said, it had to be a Max of inch and a half.
- 56:04So everybody in with us and everybody else were welding up
- 56:08the intake manifold to put them where they where they you know
- 56:11we're right up against the hood. Basically you want your air
- 56:15cleaner up against the hood basically is what it was?
- 56:19Well we got ready to go to Richmond.
- 56:22Robin put the air cleaner on it, close the hood and it's like,
- 56:26damn, you know, it's saying needs to be moved up a half inch
- 56:32so he takes it apart and got time.
- 56:34He's we're running late. So he puts a 2 inch spacer on
- 56:37it, don't matter, you know, they're not enforcing this rule
- 56:41anymore, you can be as tall as you want.
- 56:44We passed Tech. Four times three times what are
- 56:49pre, you know, pre Tech qualifying tag after tag,
- 56:54pre-race after the race, I'm not throwing, I'm not throwing
- 56:59Richard Childress under the bus, but he was walking with a NASCAR
- 57:04official points to our thing and says, there it is.
- 57:10Yeah, they are fresh Junior. Used to always go to the races
- 57:15but he Can go to this one, he wasn't there so they call him up
- 57:19on the phone and he probably isn't as aware as the NASCAR
- 57:25officials that they've been letting them well to the intake
- 57:29manifold. Once virtual reality of where,
- 57:31he got to long story short, he says, put them at the back of
- 57:35the final 46,000 and put them at the back of the one lap, one
- 57:40lap, down that cost us 46 points.
- 57:44So we come out of the gate. We're real strong, we run third
- 57:47in the points the year before our second year together with
- 57:50Roush, and that's where I blew up at Atlanta.
- 57:53I was actually taking the points from the blew up in Atlanta and
- 57:5689 or second year. So anyway, we take the point
- 58:00lead in May so you can whine about the penalty if you want,
- 58:06but we led the points from May all the way to the next last
- 58:10race at Phoenix. We go to Phoenix.
- 58:14Dale Earnhardt sits on the pole leads most laps and wins the
- 58:19race and we run 10th and never lie.
- 58:24Laughs got you. So you can also say we that's
- 58:28where we lost the right? The championship because we went
- 58:31from leading the points to behind going into Atlanta,
- 58:38right? And so we go to Atlanta to East
- 58:44Earnhardt shows up to test two. We take three cars, we beat our
- 58:49brains out, all hands on deck, all hands on deck and the 28 car
- 58:57was setting up there. Earnhardt shows up he runs about
- 59:01an hour and a half. He's quicker than everybody.
- 59:05He puts it on the trailer and leaves goes hunting.
- 59:09Yeah. And we make asked me if I Owner
- 59:13Drive the 28 car. So go up there and put the rags
- 59:16in the seat and I go out there and the first time by, I'm like
- 59:21a quarter of a second faster than my fastest lap and you
- 59:25know, I'm worried my three cars. and so, It's this all this is
- 59:35going to be detailed in the book so I'm not going to go into.
- 59:37Okay, yeah that's good tail but at the end of the day we borrow
- 59:40that car and Yates motor for the race and you can say that's why
- 59:46we lost it Championship to a lot of people do.
- 59:50But we ran first of all, Matt pointed out to me recently that
- 59:56we ran out of gas twice in the race and had a nisshin box go
- 1:00:02out. So, in black and white, we ran
- 1:00:05sixth in Earnhardt, rain third, and we lost by 26 points.
- 1:00:12So, what that means is really the only way I could have won
- 1:00:16the championship was win the race.
- 1:00:20Yeah. What makes you think that I
- 1:00:24would have won the race with one of my car's, right?
- 1:00:27Yeah. Which was a quarter second
- 1:00:29roller which would have drove a little bit better than than
- 1:00:33babies old bloke snout, but it would have had 60, less
- 1:00:43horsepower. Mmm.
- 1:00:45Yeah, Yeah. Ralph Ralph never had
- 1:00:47horsepower. You made those Motors.
- 1:00:49Look good. So True or false.
- 1:00:56I'm not going to say, but I always roll the corner.
- 1:01:04Always wrote a essay and everything.
- 1:01:06So, long story short, there were whatever multiple you know, the,
- 1:01:12you know, there were, we lost the championship in two
- 1:01:15different ways, but I don't think there was any chance that
- 1:01:19we would have went there and won the race with her own car.
- 1:01:21It we had only one 13 races, the whole season.
- 1:01:24Why would you expect to be able to pull Atlanta off?
- 1:01:28Yeah, so we got here because we're talking about the next-gen
- 1:01:32car, we're talking about tech, inspection and penalties.
- 1:01:36So we've wrapped that up. I want to one last thing.
- 1:01:41A couple questions more beating and banging.
- 1:01:45So I talked to talk to, you know, went to Bristol and they
- 1:01:49just knocking the hell out of each other because the cars,
- 1:01:52German tank and they can get away with it.
- 1:01:55The front of the car so strong that they're just as you see it.
- 1:01:59Me and you watch the races and I talked to these guys till I
- 1:02:03asked, awesome Dylan. I said also, I said why the hell
- 1:02:06are y'all just not going to hell out of each other?
- 1:02:08He says, Kenny, we used to have to guard against it because we
- 1:02:11knocked a radiator out. He says these cars are so
- 1:02:15strong, it's the only way we pay him back.
- 1:02:17What is your opinion on just the totality of not?
- 1:02:22Knocking the hell out of each other.
- 1:02:23Nowadays, it's a different day and age Kenny and you know,
- 1:02:28embrace it. I like the contact, I don't like
- 1:02:32seeing dirty. I like seeing racing side by
- 1:02:35side race, your guts out, door moment, you rub some, I'm all
- 1:02:41good with that. I don't like seeing, you know,
- 1:02:44I'm not a big fan of bump and run but the stuff spun to watch
- 1:02:49racing on product on the racetrack as is fun.
- 1:02:52Fun. It's a different day and age.
- 1:02:55Everybody's cars are closer together and speed harder to
- 1:02:59pass. We used to be able to occur.
- 1:03:02So dang light. You couldn't touch somebody or
- 1:03:04admit some up so let you know it's a different day and age.
- 1:03:08I embrace it it's it is what it is.
- 1:03:11I like it. So we've had a lot of hardship
- 1:03:16in this interview but very therapeutic.
- 1:03:20What is? Let's wrap NASCAR up right now.
- 1:03:24What is good about NASCAR? The competition on the
- 1:03:29racetrack. They It's the Crown Jewel, stock
- 1:03:38car racing. It still is has been, you know,
- 1:03:43since the 60s 50s or 60s, and it's an opportunity for a lot of
- 1:03:51people to realize their dreams, which is work on, on, you know,
- 1:03:56Big Time, race, race cars and race teams, I asked, chip
- 1:04:02ganassi one time. When I was a working for that
- 1:04:04NASCAR raceday show Had chip ganassi on.
- 1:04:08I said chip you want all these Indianapolis 500 you're the
- 1:04:11greatest Indie card owner you know second to Roger Penske why
- 1:04:17do you want to be NASCAR chip ganassi kind of gave me the same
- 1:04:21answer you did he said because NASCAR is where the shows
- 1:04:24happen. Yeah so yeah right he's right
- 1:04:30Mark what's in the like this buddy?
- 1:04:33When you look back on your career, It could be at any time
- 1:04:37but during your racing career what was the most happy you ever
- 1:04:43were in your racing career? What time 2007 when I went and
- 1:04:49drove the 01 car for a limited schedule.
- 1:04:52Build a is. Yeah, that was again.
- 1:04:58And the Army car 01, our Makar 07 then 09 was real.
- 1:05:04Happy to with Rick Hendrick in the 5 car.
- 1:05:08We sit on about seven polls and won five races in 2009 and it
- 1:05:13was just it was a blast, a lot of blast Mark, you were
- 1:05:18wonderful. I love you, I appreciate you.
- 1:05:22This was a great time. We as, you know, we keep going
- 1:05:25on and on but that was very therapeutic.
- 1:05:27You work for me. You taught me a lot and this and
- 1:05:30we're going to wrap it up. We want to let everybody know
- 1:05:32that we are in podcast for now. So what a great interview.
