- 0:00Speaker 1: The Gospel is not just the two Great commandments. The
- 0:05Speaker 1: Gospel is not just the two great commandments. And that's
- 0:08Speaker 1: what's popular in our day. You just boil it down
- 0:13Speaker 1: to love God, love people. Listen to Carson's word on this.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Other voices identify the Gospel with the first and second commandments,
- 0:24Speaker 1: the commandments to love God with heart, soul, and mind,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and strength, and our neighbor as ourself. These commandments are
- 0:31Speaker 1: so central that Jesus himself insists that all the prophets
- 0:36Speaker 1: and the law hang on them. But most emphatically, they
- 0:40Speaker 1: are not the gospel. Love God, love people. It's not
- 0:47Speaker 1: the gospel. In fact, here's the irony. That phrase, love God,
- 0:52Speaker 1: love people is actually a summary of the law. It's
- 0:58Speaker 1: the opposite of the gospel. Listen to what Paul says
- 1:02Speaker 1: about that in Romans chapter thirteen, verses eight through ten. Oh,
- 1:06Speaker 1: no one anything except to love each other. For the
- 1:09Speaker 1: one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the
- 1:13Speaker 1: commandments you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder,
- 1:15Speaker 1: you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and any
- 1:18Speaker 1: other commandment are summed up in this word. By the way,
- 1:21Speaker 1: notice he's talking about the second Table of the Law,
- 1:23Speaker 1: the horizontal commandments summed up in this way or in
- 1:28Speaker 1: this word. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love
- 1:31Speaker 1: does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the
- 1:34Speaker 1: fulfilling of the Law. We use that phrase as though
- 1:43Speaker 1: we've unlocked a magic key to the Gospel. And the
- 1:46Speaker 1: irony is we have run right back to the law
- 1:49Speaker 1: like a dog running to its vomit. And it sounds
- 1:53Speaker 1: so good, and it's ubiquitous. Do a search sometime for love, God,
- 1:58Speaker 1: love people and church. You'll find thousands of churches like
- 2:03Speaker 1: south Side Christian Church, Love God, love people. But then
- 2:06Speaker 1: you find others who get creative with Itmorrow Baptist Church,
- 2:10Speaker 1: Love God, Love People, Change the world. Anglewood Baptist Church

- 3:00Speaker 1: How about courageous church, love God, love people. Prove it
- 3:07Speaker 1: North City, Church of Christ, love God, love people, be changed,
- 3:13Speaker 1: keep the law, be changed, and finally experienced church safety, harbor,
- 3:20Speaker 1: love God, love people. Period. It's ubiquitous. That is the
- 3:29Speaker 1: catch phrase of our day, and it's a catchphrase that
- 3:34Speaker 1: is used by people who intend to say, get away
- 3:38Speaker 1: from all that law stuff, get away from all that legalism.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Just love God and love people. And what they just
- 3:45Speaker 1: said was get away from the law. Obey the law,
- 3:52Speaker 1: because if you just obey the law, then you don't
- 3:56Speaker 1: have to worry about the law. Now, Am I saying
- 4:03Speaker 1: that we don't love God and we don't love people.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That is what the Gospel produces, not what the Gospel commands.
- 4:11Speaker 1: The Gospel produces that in the life of the believer,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and it's evidence that we love God, that we've been
- 4:18Speaker 1: born again, we love God, and we love others because
- 4:21Speaker 1: of what Christ has done in us. It's because of
- 4:24Speaker 1: the work of the Gospel in our lives. It is
- 4:27Speaker 1: not a substitute for the gospel that is blasphemous. It's blasphemous.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And again, all of these churches may communicate that clearly somewhere,
- 4:43Speaker 1: generally not on their websites. I looked
