- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm just gonna leave my best carries it home so
- 0:03he's not here to see Ben Lee the doughnut critic
- 0:07and eat the delicious treats.
- 0:09Speaker 2: The ice cream critic, in this case, ice cream today.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Hi Ben, how are you pretty good? Yeah?
- 0:15Speaker 4: This is delicious ice cream, local ice cream local.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's ice cream for breakfast. So I'm sorry
- 0:21if that wrecks any of your diets.
- 0:23Speaker 3: But it's historical ice cream.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It's historical for sure. So this is something that may
- 0:29really excite the older crowd and confuse the younger crowd
- 0:33because snell Groves is back. If you've remember the snow
- 0:38Groves ice cream name, sure, then you're at least over
- 0:41twenty because it hasn't been around since about two thousand
- 0:45and eight.
- 0:45Speaker 3: It's been that long. Oh gosh.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So yeah, So there's a lot of history. I mean,
- 0:50this goes back to nineteen twenty nine when they first started.
- 0:53It was started with the mission, right, you know, as
- 0:56the Great Depression was happening, to gather people to get happiness,
- 1:00you know, to give a sweet treat. And you can
- 1:02tell that that's the mission of the family too. I've
- 1:05talked to a lot of the snow Groves, and I
- 1:07just feel as though that's like the sentiment of the company.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Okay, they really do have a rich history. Says here
- 1:15in some notes that you gave us. Served in nineteen
- 1:18thirty five, they served a snow Groves ice cream at
- 1:21Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Thanksgiving dinner. And then the sign in Sugarhouse,
- 1:28the giant Cone, the double Cone. Nineteen sixty two is
- 1:33when that was built.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it was one of the first three d for
- 1:37yes Co. You know, a Utah staple as well. And
- 1:41then there's the Ronald Reagan. They shipped a bunch of
- 1:44ice cream out to him. He wanted jellybean ice cream,
- 1:46and the founder, you know, one of the snow Groves,
- 1:48made it and shipped it out.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Oh I didn't know that.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So rich history. So they're starting it up again. Who's
- 1:56doing this?
- 1:57Speaker 2: So her name's Lindsay, she's a snow Grove. But you know,
- 2:02it kind of went away Dryers you bought it in
- 2:04the nineties and then they discontinued the brand in two
- 2:07thousand and eight. So a lot of us haven't had
- 2:10it for years. I mean, we all haven't.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Had it for years.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And she decided these family recipes were just too good
- 2:17to not share and she wanted to bring that same happiness,
- 2:21that same mission to people, and so she started first
- 2:24in Saint George. So around the pandemic time she started
- 2:27her first location down there. And it was a shock
- 2:30to me. I thought, this amazing, cool brand from the past,
- 2:34just little old Saint George, and it really was just
- 2:37this bud and it's now flowering, you know. So for
- 2:40a couple of years now people have been able to
- 2:42go and enjoy that burn Alman fudge, that really classic flavor.
- 2:46But the people of Salt Lake, people up here that
- 2:48don't get down there, haven't been able to try it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Now, can we get this now?
- 2:53Speaker 2: So you can. There are a few places you can
- 2:55get pints. They've contracted with the store to their pints
- 3:01in their Myers Market and then Bowman's Market up in
- 3:04Davis County, but a lot of people still don't know
- 3:07about it. It's not really highly publicized. But the locations
- 3:11that they are announcing now are going to be huge.
- 3:15So now in Salt Lake, in Utah Counties, and I
- 3:18guess in Davis County as well, there are going to
- 3:20be locations where they're scooping. So it's not just a
- 3:22pint in the grocery store. They're going to be scooping again.
- 3:27Speaker 1: We got a texture here. I was very excited to
- 3:29find snell Groves malted milk ice cream at the store.
- 3:32I love to try.
- 3:33Speaker 2: That's actually my favorite flavor now, I.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Really like this is it? Is it gingerbread or something?
- 3:39Speaker 2: That one's the Biscof, So yeah, Biscof is taken over
- 3:43the world right now. Yeah, yes, no, it's It's truly amazing.
- 3:49And that is the flavor one of their newer flavors.
- 3:52Obviously they have their classic Canadian vanilla, their burn almond fudge,
- 3:55and a lot of those other flavors, but you know,
- 3:57they're obviously working to get those new ones. And then
- 4:00you'll notice on your plate as well. I gave you
- 4:03a blue a raspberry raspberry. Yeah, and that is a
- 4:06bear Lake raspberry.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I was going to ask if it's local. It's very good.
- 4:09Speaker 2: It's very bold, like, yes, raspberry is very pro well,
- 4:13and honestly, that's what people want with the shakes when
- 4:15they go up to bear Lake. But a lot of
- 4:17times it's just ice cream and the raspberries aren't bold.
- 4:20And I love how they bring out that raspberry flavor
- 4:22in this ice cream.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Well it's it's delicious stuff.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And the oh and then there was the one on
- 4:28four South.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, then Groves that small, you know.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And the funny thing is is, I've had so many
- 4:35people say we need to get a petition to have
- 4:37snow Groves take that back. Yes, because they just yeah,
- 4:41they just painted the ice cream cones black, which was
- 4:44like nice to have at least a remembrance that they
- 4:46were still there. But now that snow Groves is back.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Yes, and you know those those those cones used to
- 4:53twirl as well.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yes, And I for.
- 4:55Speaker 4: One think it's a crime if a business has a
- 4:58sign the twirls and and then they just let it
- 5:01fall and let it doesn't twirl anything like Zion's Bank
- 5:04on fourth South and seventh East. They're sign used to twirrel.
- 5:09Doesn't squirrel anymore. Bill makes me angry.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I was gonna say, I think Bill is gonna be
- 5:13the first one to sign the petition to have that
- 5:15building taken over.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I mean that's how real estate works, is petitions. Yes,
- 5:20they work for TV shows, sure casting movies.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You know, I wonder who owns that building? I don't
- 5:27know if Jimmy Johns owns it or not.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Okay, well, if anybody listening knows the owner of that building,
- 5:33we're gonna we're gonna make this happen. But locations are
- 5:36going up in Lehigh, Sandy, and Centerville, so each county
- 5:42gets one. And I'm really glad that they went up
- 5:44to Davis County because I get so many messages from
- 5:47Davis County people. Salt Lake, Utah County, they always get everything.
- 5:51We never get anything.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But guess what you've got snow growths.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yes, now you guys got snow growth. But it's gonna
- 5:57be amazing. It's gonna be delicious. Honestly, this super premium
- 6:00ice cream is something that's really needed in the market.
- 6:03I know we have a lot of ice cream, but
- 6:05there's a lot of you know, economy and basic stuff
- 6:08that we're getting, and we really like that super premium stuff.
- 6:11Speaker 1: If you're gonna have ice cream, why not get the
- 6:13really good stuff, get the local.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's true.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I think Snow Girls had a downtown location to like
- 6:20a parlor, ice cream parlor where you could go in.
- 6:23I seem to remember going in there with my wife
- 6:26and check on split.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, my remembrance is always on twenty one hundred and
- 6:32seeing that signage and just thinking, is all the ice
- 6:35cream made their kind of thing? And then all of
- 6:37a sudden it was kind of gone, but they still
- 6:39sold it. And so now I think you'll start seeing
- 6:42these locations pop up.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Well, I think they'd better double up on their production
- 6:47of the malted milk ice cream because people are texting
- 6:50in about that. Boy, it sounds wonderful one of their favorites.
- 6:53What it's back? Oh my goodness, you know, I mean.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And I can confirm I had that down in Saint George,
- 6:58and yes, one of my favorite flavors. But this is
- 7:00Burnalman fudge. I mean I have. That's the one that
- 7:03people talk to me all the time. And you know,
- 7:06older people in my family are always like reminiscing and
- 7:09thinking saying, oh the burn Olmen fudge at this store.
- 7:11This store isn't as good as snow Groves. But guess
- 7:13what with it back, we can do a one to
- 7:16one comparison.
- 7:17Speaker 4: And now is the is the snow Groves. It's this
- 7:22sign in Sugarhouse still there.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's still there, It is still there. Yeah, it was
- 7:25marked as a historical place.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I haven't been to Sugar House since they started tearing
- 7:30it up.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But yeah, we're going to sign that petition for for South.
- 7:33I'm there, bring it all.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Right, The Doughnut Critic. You can find all stuff Ben
- 7:38Lee related on Instagram. Just look for the Donut Critic
- 7:41and it'll put you wherever you need to go.
