- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, you're on with me tonight and a lot of developments
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens game and you were actually there and it was, it was just a very disappointing game overall.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Greer has finally been canned.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: Champ Gallic Kelly is a new general manager and the dolphins have traded Jalen Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 20, 26 third round pit.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of developments from the trade deadline as well.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: that could at potentially impact the Miami Dolphins will get all right into it.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, like you said, I was at the game.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'm a very optimistic fan and I, you know, spent the day feeling like the Dolphins had a chance to come back when in the end it was clear that they were, the much worse team that day, right?
- 2:32[SPEAKER_02]: And this season, even they both had two wins going into that,
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: two ends.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, after that, right, you got the news of Chris Greer, then the news of Jalen Phillips, you know, felt like they were going to start to get the ball rolling to the, you know, full tank rebuild, whatever you want to call it, bit a lot of fans did.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then we got it today.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: And there were some big moves today that we're going to discuss, but none of those really centered around the dolphins.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: In some of those,
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: may have just been opportunities that fans wanted that weren't there.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: We don't know whether Chimpe Kelly was just sitting on his hands in the office or whether he was actually trying to do stuff and just wasn't able to get that.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: Get what he was asking, but there was definitely some moves today that impacted Dolphins indirectly that weren't going to discuss.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I feel like what's going on with the Miami Dolphins with General Manager Chris Greer being completely gone.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Phillips being traded and now champ Kelly former bears and raiders executive stepping in as the interim general manager of a team that feels like it's quite a dismantling itself midseason.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's not necessarily a rebuild.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's also not a tear down, but let's call it what it looks like.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: optimistically coach as you would say a strategic reevaluation of this organization and this roster.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of things that don't really necessarily necessarily lie.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start with the headline Chris Greer is out.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Has been out for a couple days now.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: Eight years as the general manager, 16 years with the organization, Steven Ross finally pulled the plug.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: What's telling isn't just when he was fired, which was mid-season, but why?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: This was not a reactionary decision by Stephen Ross.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think this was building years to come from
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: drafting Tua to Austin Jackson to know it.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: But Nagani, the whole fallout with Brian Flores, Tom Brady, the suspensions, the draft picks to take in a way, even Chris Grish trades from Jalen Ramsey to Bradley Chub.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Even Tyrik Hill, the cap was absolutely loaded with
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: injury written players and, you know, on the last podcast, you know, Eric had said that his philosophy was, you know, exploiting the market inefficiency of often injured players.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think the message was pretty clear.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: If the injured players aren't playing and the players that he picked aren't performing well and the roster he built with Mike McDaniel, Steven Ross is not going to
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: who you are, how long you've been working with him, the results need to show.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Greer's blueprint was not sustainable.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, like you said, Chris Greer had quite the long runway with the eight years, Stephen Ross sat up there on the podium and said that he was putting Chris Greer in charge of it
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: And that can be a good thing.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_02]: You don't necessarily want to owner just making knee jerk reactions and changing stuff up every year.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: But at some point, you have to pull the plug and you have to say that it's not working.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_02]: I think that he gave Chris Greer more than enough rope to essentially hang himself in the end with it.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like you said, the choices that he made, right?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_02]: There are opportunities to capitalize on the market there with some of those injured players, but when that seems to be the core philosophy of what you're chasing, that every move that you make is viewed as a bargain, because the player has an injury history, not only in the infre agency, but also a lot of these guys that were drafted, and it requires quite a bit of luck that the Dalton has never had for that strategy to work out.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_02]: was never really a sustainable model to continue doing that and it eventually came to ahead and you know Steve Ross put it out as far as he could like there it it we were to the point that there was no way that something couldn't happen when Brian floor as was fired that one kind of came as a surprise right I think that you know there
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: you know, you could try to push that one further.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: This one, you can't push any further than what they did, you know, I think that when you look at the timing of it, I think of the timing of it has to do with the ability to evaluate some of these younger players and, you know, I did a take five on the jail and Philips one.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_02]: And even when I was talking about the Chris Greer one, this is very much about.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_02]: trying to see what's left on the roster.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: What is worth keeping to build around?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that we're going to see, even though we didn't get the trades that we wanted today, I think we're still gonna see some of that youth movement, the jailing fills one really opening the door for chop Robinson to be used in a very similar role, stuff like that.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I think that at this point, there was nothing else to could happen
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: somebody had had to fall somewhere and that ended up being Chris Greer.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and champ Kelly is widely respected across the league.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: He's a scout scout known for people management, player development, and burgeoned front office and coaching communication.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: He was in Chicago, he was in Las Vegas.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: He helped implement some process driven evaluation models.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be at they were not successful.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: It was date of blended with film.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: Something that Miami continues to sorely lack in the organization, even with Chris Greer.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: in the building, I think coach U and I for the last three, four years have seen a lot of the analytics with this offense defense and some of the players that they draft and it's not necessarily fitting the mold of what a good successful organization actually needs in terms of players on the offensive line, players on the defensive line, how personal management should be players that are assigned in free agency and the type of plays personnel that are potentially
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: His appointment, champ Kelly could be more so about stability.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: It might be a test run for a full front office restructuring.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, champ Kelly interviewed for several GM jobs in recent years with Carolina Las Vegas and Tennessee among them.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I will see what happens with champ Kelly.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_02]: I, my concern there is that
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: just going from Chris Greer to Champ Kelly and not continuing the revamp of the front office is just not enough for me.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: To me, that feels like we're going to continue to try to do some of the same things.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, Mike McDaniel still has a chance to save his job.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think was, you know, a chef here in some of the other ones reported that right now they're saying that McDaniel is safe through the end of the year.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see if that is the case if they continue
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: But as we get into future seasons, if the only change is to move to champ Kelly, then I wonder how much influence that champ Kelly would really have because we've seen in the past where Mike McDaniel has kind of gone a bug Chris Greer and some scenarios in Chris Greer, one of his biggest faults was that he catered too much to his head coaches.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: That whatever they wanted was kind of the direction
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas I didn't, when you have that GM, when you have that guy that's put is that is the head of the rebuild, that guy needs to have some plans where he comes out and says, look, this is who we're getting, this is who you need to coach or this is who we're keeping, this is who we're letting go and I don't think we had enough of that with Chris.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: Chris Greer and I'm not sure that if the only move is good at champ Kelly I'm not sure that we're going to get that guy in the GM position that has that weight to push around and say this is what we're going to do because I feel like if they continue with what they have and they bring Mike McDaniel back that he is still going to have Stephen Ross's ear and you know.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: Essentially, the chant Kelly would just be a de facto GM and I'm not sure that Mike McDaniel has done anything to be in a Andy Reed or Bill Bellachect tape role where he should really have that say in personality there.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, maybe Mike McDaniel has a bit too much power.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: or, you know, Mike McDaniel is more so old and Steven Ross's ear.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: We do know that Mike, I'm a Steven Ross, quote unquote, loves Mike McDaniel.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Steven Ross has some pressure and potentially letting Mike McDaniel go.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: If he does end up leaving the dolphins, if Steven Ross doesn't need fire him, he's gonna be a hot shot offensive coordinator, commodity, come January, February, if he does indeed fire him.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: Not only that, you're letting one of the best offensive minds go, he could potentially get another NFL team's offense back into top 10 status and thrust himself back into a head coaching gig.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen him happen with Dan Campbell, we're seeing him happen with Ben Johnson, we're seeing it happen with Zack Taylor.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of these head coaches in the NFL, at least 25% in the NFL,
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: working and being paid by Stephen Ross as coordinators or coaches, for sure.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: So my colleague Daniel might be thinking, hey, maybe I really need to give this guy a chance, maybe actually, you know, maybe he can learn from his mistakes, maybe he can potentially grow.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: And this comes to my point, coach that I also put in our only Finn's discord.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: By the way,
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: a month for the Patreon chat.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: I put this in our premium vetted channel saying maybe it's not more so the pressure for Mike McDaniel to actually win with this team and with this roster, but more
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: more so the pressure to show that he can build a function and competent offense with what he's got.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he can grow the playbook a little bit more, maybe he can grow.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: into a leadership style role in terms of his coach.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: We know Frank Smith is finally down on the sideline.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: They're communicating a little bit.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we've been very, very critical of Mike McDaniel.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: He sticks with this core philosophy.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: If he deviates from it and he works, he doesn't stick to it.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's very core in his philosophy.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to dig him to the numbers because the dolphins' offensive decline
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: very, very bad.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Look, eighth in completion percentage, ninth and third down rate, 12 in red zone touched down rate.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: But they're not getting their often into their red zone.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: They're not able to score points.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: They have turnovers, miscuse, misheaps.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now look, those rates and metrics on completion and third down in red zone, they sound strong.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: They sound like a top offense.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: But when you go deeper, you only have 6.47 yards per pass, 23rd in the NFL.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: 13.7% explosive pass rate, 26th in the NFL, and 34 explosive passes total, which is 22nd in the NFL.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the offense may be a bit more efficient, but it's not dynamic.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's lost that edge
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: You can point to play calling, which we have, you can also point to player execution, which also coach, we've both talked about.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: But also what about common sense?
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: What about personal usage?
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: What about trying something different that has worked in the past?
- 15:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know, said about, you know, that I think it's time to move on from Mike McDaniel.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, yeah, I'd love to have Mike McDaniel as an officer coordinator.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, I brought up his reluctance to change in the way that he goes back to some of his old habits as soon as things start to get tough.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: And he pointed out that as an offensive coordinator, you're going to have somebody above him that can kind of, I don't want to say, push him around a little bit, right?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, when you get into a couple of those series where you're moving away from the run and then your head coach gets on the head sentence and hey Mike we need to we need to run the ball this next series right right right now there's nobody in the organization with Mike we can go being at the top of the food chain there there's you know there might be guys that are suggesting it but there's nobody outside of Stephen Ross that can get on the headset and say Mike we got to run the damn ball right or you know we we need to
- 16:47[SPEAKER_02]: go to a different philosophy, right, that we are catering more to the talent that we have.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_02]: Because Mike McGayne will, we all know, he's a great exes of those guys.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: I think that if he had, you know, if you take the roster that he's supposed to have each year, I think he could put together a fantastic offense that's letting up the scoreboard, but then as those pieces start to fall off, we don't see an adjustment to the players that are on the field, right?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: It comes down to that.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_02]: the added Jimi's and Joe's versus X's and O's, right?
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: You can have all the X's and O's you want, but if the Jimi's and Joe's you have on the field are not capable of that, well, then you need to adjust the X's and O's to do what your guys on the field can do.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: And it haven't really felt that with Mike McDonald's, so, you know, I, you know, I know that we'd all be wearing egg on her face, all of us that want to move on from Mike McDonald, if he goes somewhere else and wins a Super Bowl isn't off its coordinator, but I don't know that he is ready to make that growth as a head coach and play call out at the same time, like it feels like somebody that needs to go somewhere else needs to have a little more oversight,
- 18:01[SPEAKER_02]: while he's calling these plays and and learn more like we see this all the time where a coach flames out in his first stint as a head coach goes somewhere else and grows and then in his second term is a much better coach.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's you know probably what we're going to end up seeing with Mike McDaniel.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: For me,
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the the leadership qualities are not necessarily there.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he wants that player that locker and we talked about that the last time that I was on here on scouting the fins about how you can't have that without kind of setting the direction.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think the dolphins have ever done that and I don't know that you can really do that at this point because Mike McDaniel has been who he is here and it's tough to change that.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think that.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_02]: There's certainly a scenario that he goes somewhere else and he's a great office of coordinator and it looks awful for us, but I don't know that hanging on to him longer than we have is going to have that same result.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there was something that Chris Kaufman posted in the only Finn's discord saying on scripted drives on the first or second series, the Dolphins offense is world beaters, right?
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: And as the game goes on, there becomes like this complete slope of deterioration as the game goes on where
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: below average, they're ranking around the 20s in terms of your per play in terms of point score.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: even in terms of rushing yards.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Look, Mike McDaniel can be this great guy who's an amazing play designer, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's the best game planner or maybe even the best play caller.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're going to be an offensive guy, especially as a hot shot coordinator, which everyone thought he was in San Francisco, and you're also the head coach, you're not
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: in the locker room and coach you said it look he's earned the power he's earned the respect of Stephen Ross but at some point even with the change of the organization if this continues and Stephen Ross does not necessarily see a change and how the football team is playing and how they're preparing.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think this could be it for Black McDonough, even though Adam Shepter has said that he's safe till this season.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and we see that all the time where somebody says that somebody is safe or they're not going to be replaced as a starter or coach, whatever, and then things continue to go south and your hand is forced.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: Steven Ross, I don't think wanted to make a mid-season firing of Chris Greer.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think he wanted to let the season play out.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: See, I went, but it got to a point where you had to make a move.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_02]: And if the dolphins continue to lose games if, you know, for now, Mike McKinney also has a team playing hard, but now that now that Steven Ross has made the Chris Greer move and made it clear that we are looking towards the future
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: If those players start to kind of fall off in terms of the effort, the execution, the focus, over the next few weeks, then you're going to reach a point with Mike McDaniels, well, where even though you want to keep until the end of the season, that your hand can get forced with that as well.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll talk about the plan for the Dolphins future in a little bit.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: And our opinions on the Trade Deadline that happened.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: But first, we are going to head to brick and a word from our sponsors.

- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, we got to take a look at this future of the Miami Dolphins for 2026, 2027.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: And beyond, it was reported that the Miami Dolphins would be having, you know, you could say a fire sail before and right during the trade deadline.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of talks of certain Miami Dolphins players potentially being moved around, you know, Jalen Fels was moved for a third rounder.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: They were talks about Bradley Chub, Russel of Douglas, Mink of Fitzpatrick, even potentially Jalen Wright, and even Jalen Waterle, the Penguin.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of reported comp offers.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins were asking, not really asking, and they weren't offering Jalen Waterle.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: Other teams wanted Jalen Waterle on the dolphins for saying, OK.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: We're listening.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: We want a first-round pick starting off and a little bit more.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, you know, a third-rounder, fourth-rounder for that same draft here or another high-round, you know, day two pick in 2027.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that scared teams a little bit because, as you know, that NFL Insiders reported, like Ian Rappaport and Tom Pilassaro, that they were sticking with their guns.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: They were sticking with their valuations.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of dolphins fans weren't happy, but it leads me to believe, you know, with the players that were involved in this.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: Why was Jalen Phillips the player that was treated away instead of say Bradley Chub who brings no value to the Miami Dolphins next year or in 2027, especially with his contract?
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's an aging player, aging veteran.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't necessarily been playing like he was before injury, but Jalen Phillips gets moved.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_02]: So on the Jalen wild thing, you know, I think that was more of a
- 27:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know, if you remember back when the dolphins traded Laramie Tunzel, and they got that King Dransom from the Texans, and you know, those reports that, you know, Tunzel walked into the office to be told he was traded, you know, saw what they got for me and he's like, yeah, I had traded me for that, too.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that was kind of the snare as water where they weren't necessarily looking to move jail and water, but if somebody's going to come in with, you know,
- 28:06[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I don't know if they were ever expecting that to actually happen or that they were, you know, really pushing or negotiating.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like that was more of a, hey, if you're going to blow us out of the water with an offer, then we'll listen type of deal.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, that's about as far as I think that one got as far as Jalen Phillips versus Bradley Chub.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think that comes down to, you know, Jalen Phillips was a much more attractive piece to another team.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you're looking at a player who, from Philly's perspective, they're essentially getting him for a third round pick and paying him, I think, one and a half million dollars for the remainder of the season.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: And then, and this is a big if for Jalen Phillips, right, if he stays healthy for the rest of 2025 signs that big contract, even somewhere else, in place 2026, then the Eagles could still recoup a cop pick from that whole deal, you know, maybe even as high as a third.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: And as they do that, then they look like geniuses from the dolphins perspective with that one, you know, I.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_02]: I think that they kind of knew at this point that especially with the uncertainty of what's happening with the coaching staff, that you don't want to get to the end of the season and have to offer another injury real player a massive contract.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: the way that they did with Tua, right?
- 29:34[SPEAKER_02]: You go when you give jail of Phillips a new contract, you're bringing in the coaching staff potentially, and then he gets injured again, and that just becomes an excuse for the next coaching staff.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_02]: So rather than creating an excuse for the next coaching staff, rather than, you know, or even hoping that he goes sign somewhere else, and you get the comp pick in 2027, you know, I think you trade him now,
- 30:00[SPEAKER_02]: for 2026.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: And you take a step towards making, you know, if they're not going to stick with champ Kelly, making this position more appealing, right?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_02]: The more that you can stockpile those picks with the limitations they're going to have in spending and free agency in 2026.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_02]: Having more draft picks is a way that you make this a more attractive job for a GM.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even want to give up anything for him, right?
- 30:34[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you described everything about him.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_02]: And Ray Jalen Phillips has been playing pretty well, right?
- 30:39[SPEAKER_02]: But I wouldn't say that he's at a proble level.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: And you're talking about Bradley Chub playing, you know, not even up to that level.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: So from an on-field performance, not as good of a player right now.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_02]: And then when you look at the contract,
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: where the Eagles could be free and clear jail in the field if they want to.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: There are still multiple years of control left on Bradley Chubbs contract where over the next couple of years, he's got almost $20 million base salary.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_02]: So if you've traded him to another team, then they would be staring down the barrel of doing something with that contract next year potentially.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that really,
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: You know, maybe you could have flipped in for a six or a seven.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: And it, but again, maybe that's not what the dolphins were looking for.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they were saying, hey, we want to five.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: And nobody was willing to go that eye.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_02]: And they just decided not to do it.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think that if Bradley Chubkin stay healthy, again, you know, another big question mark there, I think that you could possibly have the same conversation in
- 31:48[SPEAKER_02]: that you did in 2025 with him, where you felt like they essentially told him, look, you are on the cusp of getting cut, right?
- 31:57[SPEAKER_02]: And we can cut you and you can go out there and you can find what you want in a contract.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's not gonna be as big as what you have today, or we can restructure this lower your base salary and create incentives again where you have the potential
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: to earn a lot of that back.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's still a conversation that you can have with Bradley Chub next year.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: But in the end, I think that the, you know, dealing Jalen Phillips, he was just a much more attractive player.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think they had any intentions of moving water and Chub, I just don't think, you know, had the appeal to other teams that Dolphins fans would like to say that anybody was really knocking on the door for him.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: So look, you're going to hate me for this, but this is what I'm calling a quote unquote functional tank job.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: I know you don't like to work tanky coach.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: You don't say the word out loud, but
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: The non-moves that did not happen for the dolphins on the trade deadline, kind of say it for you.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: They're sticking to their philosophy, they're sticking to their guns, and now they're gonna be evaluating their personal, personal.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna be thinking about 2026 cutting whatever cost they can to clear up their books.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: Right now they're gonna be under the salary of cab by 25.9 million dollars for 2026.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to try to reposition themselves for long-term cap health.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: They have what is it?
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: Eight picks in the draft in 2026.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: They have a first, a second, 33's, four, five, six, and seven.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: Nine picks that they have in total.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: They could use some of those picks for trades for getting other younger players potentially.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: What do you do about to it?
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: All right, 2026 is a big hit year for his cap.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: If you do look to trade him, you could do the Denver method where you just eat the money, trade him and drive to a young quarterback.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: But that kind of defeats the purpose.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: You're making this young quarterback come into a team that doesn't necessarily have
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: a core personnel.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: It has an offensive and defensive philosophy, but it doesn't have the culture for that quarterback to succeed.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we saw an unsuccessful tank job for the Miami Dolphins.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: The 2019-2020 season, they tried their best.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: They had all these picks.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: They put all these money into,
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: who were injury prone to big contracts and were back at the same point we were in 2018 during the Ryan Tana Hill.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: years.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: So what are you going to do?
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: You can stockpile these assets, play the assets game correctly, draft good football players who are not injured, or are you going to fall into the same thing with this organization, with this regime?
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: This just kind of leads me to believe with Steven Ross.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: He may not be up for another tank.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: And we talked about it in a couple of episodes ago,
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: the Ross ownership group with his daughter and his son-in-law Daniel Soman.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_01]: maybe they could be potentially in the process of advising Steve and Ross, hey, maybe we should do things a little bit differently, whether they extend champ Kelly as a general manager or they look for someone else who has a better philosophy in mind, better strategic asset thinking, better salary
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: owners want to be salary cap guys because they could bring in their own salary cap guys heck the dolphins already have one with brand and short they need someone to operate as the head or VP of football operations kind of like an excitement who who he was in college and he operated like a general manager and he had amazing coaches that could do the job for it operated
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: ran the team without giving too much power to the head coach in this case, Mike McDaniel.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you, you, like you said, I don't like the user word, right?
- 36:33[SPEAKER_02]: But you nailed it with the idea of a functional tank.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was the clear direction as soon as Chris Greer was let go, right?
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: That at that point was a clear indication that this team is moving from, you know,
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: hoping to rebound and make a playoff run to we know this season we know we're finally admitting that this season is essentially over and we are going into a evaluation phase.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's what we're going to get through the rest of this here.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're going to see more of these young guys playing bigger snaps so that they really can evaluate it and see what
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: the strategy for rebuilding.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: And if you go back to the, you know, how this whole Chris Greer thing played out, there was never really a clear vision on that rebuild, right?
- 37:28[SPEAKER_02]: You started out with, you know, the tank in 2019, you accumulated all those picks, and you can argue where the picks were the right ones or not, right?
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously a lot of them weren't.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_02]: But there was a strategy there of building through the draft, building those young players,
- 37:45[SPEAKER_02]: and trying to create a core for that team under Brian Flores.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then Mike McDaniel arrives.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: And you see a complete shift in that philosophy.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: We're now, they're shipping out draft picks for Tyrekel, four jail and Ramsey, four Bradley Chub, and it became a quick fix type thing that obviously failed as well.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that as we're heading in,
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: to whatever this next version of the dolphin is, it's gonna be very important to have a clear direction of where you wanna go.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that has to be through the draft that you have to, this is a long term thing, right?
- 38:28[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that we can sit here mid-season 2025 and feel like 2022 is gonna look like a bounce back here and maybe you can, right?
- 38:38[SPEAKER_02]: You go back to the Tony Sparano,
- 38:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know, was it 5 and 11 to 11 and 5 or something like that, you know, maybe you do catch lightning in a bottle a little bit there.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_02]: But that probably should not be the expectation heading in the next year.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_02]: And when it comes to the whole two of things, right, either you, you ride that out and you have him be a bridge quarterback or, you know, you take the bad medicine now.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_02]: You, you take the cap it now and you move on from it.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, we're looking to really compete in 2026 strategy.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's more so, I guess in my mind setting up for 2027, whether it's, hey, we're going to throw a young guy in in the fire now and give him a little more leeway, or we're going to use to it as a bridge quarterback and really set it up, you know, just try to, you know, maybe make a run for something more significant in 2027, but I think that, you know, you just have to
- 39:40[SPEAKER_02]: Whoever the new GM is has to be able to set a clear vision of what we're going to do right are we going to commit to drafting guys building them up and letting that be the core of the team.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: or as soon as things start to get emotion, are we gonna have another, you know, after a picks episode, and we start, you know, trading and trying to bring in everybody else's dead in cans.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think the buildup in lead up to the 2026 and 2027 draft starts now.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: Right after this Raven's game, they have Josh Allen and Buffalo coming to town.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: Then after that, you have a Marcus Muriel to lead Washington Commanders in Madrid.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: Then you got the New Orleans Saints who are doing a tank job of their own.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have the New York Jets who shipped out, Sasquad and Gardner for two first-round picks.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: You shipped out, quit on Williams for a first-rounder and a second-rounder, as well.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: They were thinking about shipping out Breeze Hall.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: But...
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's other teams who are in a quote unquote quite take mode number one being a division rival in the AFCEs with the New York Jets who look like they're bending over for Fernando Mendoza and are in prime position to draft Jeremiah Smith in 2027.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: For this dolphins 2026 draft there's not a lot of quarterbacks at this moment right now we haven't seen a lot of the championship games yet we haven't seen a lot of the rivalries yet.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: The clear number one right now is Fernando Mendoza for quarterback.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: If you're going to bring in a quarterback to pack those two back up to a tongue-by-low and have him be the bridge until 2020-27.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a quarterback I would take right now.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be it.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a big fan of Dante more.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think he needs at least one more year of college to be masterful.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_01]: He's got a lot of talent around him and people
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: Quarterbacks in the NFL, usually whatever college they were at, they are more successful in the NFL if they played with a lesser talent.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_01]: Because those quarterbacks at those small schools like Cincinnati with Brendan Sorsby, a Joe Burrow who is now with LSU in 2019, those guys learned how to play with not NFL caliber talent, but when they did, they elevated those guys.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: even more.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: You could make that argument with Tua.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: He was already in a great system with Alabama.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: He had amazing NFL style players.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: You take a look at Tua's 2020, 2021 season.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't have that many fantastic players on his team.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: He may do with what he could, but you could argue and say he didn't necessarily elevate the team like Joe Burrell has done.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_01]: that's what I see with Dante Moore right now.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: With other quarterbacks, I don't think anyone else is first around draft worthy or franchise worthy, like a La Nore cellar's or a tailing green right at this moment.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: But that's 2027 draft class.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: has some potential with arch-maning Dante Moore could be coming up.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: You could see Lenore's sellers opt out transfer for a year or two maybe like the Miami hurricanes.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_01]: They've been great at developing quarterbacks.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_01]: You saw Cam Ward become a first-rounder Carson Bex.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: We even though he, you know, stifles under pressure, looks pretty good.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: Outside of that, he could potentially transfer to the Miami hurricane.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_01]: So you have
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: more guys there.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: And even then, Nick Seiman says, I think the best quarterback right now is Julian Sayon.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: He might even be in that 2027 quarterback draft class.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: So if the dolphins want to move towards the future, they can't win that many games this season.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it could potentially call for Tua to not play well.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: or potentially be bench and write out this wave with quen hours or Zack Wilson.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: If you're really thinking about building the right way through the draft, whether it's with McDaniel into a or without McDaniel into a.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_01]: You need to ensure that your assets are good for the draft and you get picks in the correct range for a certain type of blue chip players and prospects.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think that it's going to be difficult for the dolphins to be bad enough for a top that in 2025 when you look at the teams like the Saints and you know, you said quiet tank.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that the culture being very quiet about the way that they're tanking.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not the close that yet in the same.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yes, yes, my bad.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_02]: Colts are like, because it's even in the right.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was thinking about that because the sauce trade.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: But you know, I think the jets are being
- 44:42[SPEAKER_02]: very obvious with the tank that they're doing and I hate to give the jets any kind of of credit, but I really like the way that they're doing it, right?
- 44:51[SPEAKER_02]: You obviously get the three first round picks back between sauce gardener and quinnan Williams and then a second round pick as well.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_02]: with the Queen of Williams deal.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_02]: But in addition to that, you get a couple of former high picks and add an eye metro and Mozi Smith.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_02]: Now, those guys may not end up amounting to anything.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_02]: But if even one of those guys is able to live up to their draft status with the jets, you're moving on from an all-pro-level corner and all-pro-level defensive tackle.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_02]: But if
- 45:27[SPEAKER_02]: Mazda, you're out and I turn into decent players, plus you get those draft fix, you know, really good move for the judge.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_02]: And it sets them up to do whatever they want in the quarterback market, right?
- 45:41[SPEAKER_02]: If, you know, let's say if they don't end up with that topic and they're just in love with Fernando Mendoza and they want to go up and get him, they have the firepower to do that.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_02]: And if they decide that either Fernando Mendoza is not the guy they want,
- 45:55[SPEAKER_02]: And there's nobody else that they want, they can easily trade, you know, just kick the can down the road with those picks and pick up even more assets for the 2027 draft for them.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, really like how they did that, you know, I don't know if it all was really had the pieces available.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think I saw that the coats are only playing,
- 46:24[SPEAKER_02]: $2 million or something like that for the next year and a half, essentially, there's something something stupid like that.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is New Deal rolls around next year, similarly to Jalen models.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_02]: Gotcha, yeah.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, that made Saw Scardner a much more attractive option.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_02]: The, the basically anything the dolphins had available.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_02]: So, so trading in this point, getting that kind
- 46:54[SPEAKER_02]: good for the jets.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, bad for the dolphins, but at the same time, I don't I don't really have faith that the jets aren't going to screw this rebuild up like they have every other time they've done it.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_02]: So it doesn't worry me too much.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_02]: But the way it looks today, I am a little bit envious of the way the jets are setting up for the future.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_01]: Well, look, the Patriots have sort of kind of set up themselves for the future.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: They were not
- 47:23[SPEAKER_01]: a little bit built their defensive line got some players and then they got to quarterback and Drake made right now they're catching lightning in a bottle.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: You could argue that they look good.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_01]: But if you take a look at their DVOA from the last 20 years and their schedule, they have like the 7th easiest schedule of like the last 20 years and their DVOA from where they
- 47:49[SPEAKER_01]: as acts actually in the negatives.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_01]: So if they were actually a good team, they should be blowing everyone out of the water.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: But they have the advantage because they were bad for so long, even though they placed third or fourth last year, they have decent enough players, they have a good quarterback and Drake may.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_01]: And that's all it takes when previous seasons, you were not good.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_01]: And you could be in contention for the playoffs.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's what the Dolphins experienced from 2021 to now.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: They had favorable schedules.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: They beat up on bad teams and they crumbled up against good teams.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what we're going to see this year with the New England Patriots.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_01]: The Dolphins can't follow that model.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: They need to be able to hit on these draft picks.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_01]: They need to be very smart and concise with their contracts.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: In 2026 is free agency.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: They might have to bite the bullet this year come 2025 end of year in 2026, but they have to look forward for 2027 and 2028 to actually build a team with a good offensive line, a good defensive line, playmakers at the quarterback can dish out to and the quarterback cannot be injury prone.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_01]: The quarterback has to be the face of the team and the culture needs to
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: the head coach, general manager, and ownership.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, the dolphins have no culture.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: One thing is certain of all this culture talk with the Miami dolphins in the off season.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: The haters were right.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: The haters were absolutely right.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: They knew who the dolphins were going to be in September and October.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: From what we heard in the media pressers, the availability and the off season for media and from us We were absolutely wrong The dolphins we thought Were no longer what they were in the off season.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: They showed who they were in September and October And now we're gonna feel these effects for the next couple of years
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for my co-host coach, as always, being awesome.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: I am your other co-host who sound, but tell stick with us here.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: On scouting the Finn's part of the three-rash per carry podcast feed.

- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: As always, go Finn's.
