- 0:33Hamster with a plump. Pen might be doing quicker,
- 0:36quicker. Welcome back to Hamster With a
- 0:38Blump Pen Life, the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:42Hello, Ken. Hello, Joe.
- 0:44How are you doing today? Tired and emotional.
- 0:47It's been a hell of a day at work.
- 0:50I'm already on the gin. Tired and emotional, I thought.
- 0:53That was after two episodes of flirting with me and watching
- 0:55that robot lumbering about. Well, yes.
- 0:57And you eulogizing about what you do to Christian Schmidt.
- 1:01Oh, well, yeah. Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Yeah, I forgotten I said that. Thank you very much.
- 1:06This just planted the seed. I did one commentary right time
- 1:09in the Rani, which was always going to be a bit of a riot.
- 1:12Yeah. I did it with this lovely fella.
- 1:15Matt Markel used to work on Doctor Who Magazine.
- 1:17And he also drinks from the fountain of you because he's
- 1:20he's nearly fifty and he looks about 20 okay.
- 1:22He looks like a twink and he comes on by the end of episode
- 1:26one of Tom and Lorane yeah we're making jokes he's he's ruming me
- 1:31he's got his finger up me off there's all sorts go and oh fuck
- 1:33can I put this out you know. So I thought this is my litmus
- 1:37how far can I go and I put it out and.
- 1:41I think I lost a couple of people listening and that's
- 1:44still one of my highest rated ever.
- 1:46So that's some people's go to and listen that one, there's
- 1:49very few things that we've decided no, we've gone too far
- 1:53there. We did get one complaint though
- 1:55from and now you've heard one or two of our podcasts, so you know
- 2:00the form here, but we got a complaint letter that I, as the
- 2:04entitled white man, can say whatever I like and the
- 2:07hectoring Dr. will just let me get away with it without
- 2:11checking me. Are we listening to the same
- 2:13podcast? Because Simon bollocks me all
- 2:15the time for everything I say and he has no filter.
- 2:19You hector each other. That is absolutely part of the
- 2:22when when some of our best mates come on here, God, maybe we rip
- 2:25each other the whole way through the joy of it.
- 2:29Although do you know what? You know I can't be a Smussy git
- 2:32really. I can, yes.
- 2:34And I acknowledge that. You know what?
- 2:36It raises a smile. It's making people's days that
- 2:39you know, take a lookout the window like it's bloody
- 2:42miserable out there, socially, politically, in any way you want
- 2:45to look at it. If you can make someone raise a
- 2:47smile by being a little bit rude, well, I'm there for it.
- 2:51I know, I entirely agree. But some of the dullest podcasts
- 2:56that I've listened to, and they are always men.
- 2:59They're either single men ranting about something if
- 3:02you're off mate. Nope, not interested in your
- 3:04views. There's just relentlessly
- 3:06negative. Or, which is worse in many ways,
- 3:09two people who are fans of something relentlessly gushing.
- 3:14No, I want bitching and pulling apart and we love this thing,
- 3:17but look at how shit that tire is on that car.
- 3:20Or something ridiculous. Unfortunately, we're watching in
- 3:24robots, so we're gonna have no trouble with that.
- 3:25So, Oh yes, we're up to episode 3 today.
- 3:30Well, look, shall we skip in and see what it has to offer?
- 3:32Because I think this is where the robot grows to monstrous
- 3:36proportions. We've all been there.
- 3:38Stand back low, I don't know big this thing gets.
- 3:43For once, Ken, I don't think we're going to need the Doctor.
- 3:47Of course it's the Brigadiers. Well, go on.
- 3:49You count as in them 321 rub me. Afterwards.
- 4:00All right. I can never figure out what that
- 4:04effect is. You know that initial effect
- 4:06going down the time tunnel? Well, the slit scan, basically
- 4:12cling film and ink shot in such a way that it all smears out.
- 4:18It's a really, it's well worth watching.
- 4:21I can't remember which of the Blu rays it's on, but it shows
- 4:24you how they made it. And it's brilliant because I I
- 4:29genuinely thought for years that it was some sort of kaleidoscope
- 4:32tunnel effect they filmed down. Nothing of the kind.
- 4:35But if I'm saying you know in. 2023 How the hell did they do
- 4:39that? They did something right there.
- 4:41Well, any number of people are trying to recreate it with CGI
- 4:44as fan videos on YouTube and it should look polished AF and it
- 4:49doesn't. It looks cheap.
- 4:52Do you think that because this reprise is so long, this episode
- 4:57might have been under running a little bit?
- 4:59I mean we've gone back 5 minutes into the last episode.
- 5:01I'm going to say you can always tell when the episodes were
- 5:05under running a bit because that was one of Jonathan Turner's big
- 5:10beefs with the 45 minute format, because he said you lose a title
- 5:15sequence and an end credit sequence and two cliffhangers.
- 5:19That's a lot of material. Yeah.
- 5:22Oh, that's why you changed it to 45 minutes.
- 5:24So. So you were?
- 5:26No. They wanted him to make the same
- 5:28progress with the same money. And he said, hang on a minute,
- 5:32You're getting a good 10 minutes extra per story.
- 5:37For free, yeah? Yeah, yeah.
- 5:39Because we've no reprise, No title sequences.
- 5:42Two of those are gone. Although it did.
- 5:44It did. Spare us of two cliffhangers
- 5:48with Colin Baker going No, Yeah, stop now.
- 5:58You're overdoing that one. And the camera shooting up his
- 6:02nose. Oh good.
- 6:05How many crash Zooms were in Trial of a Time Lord?
- 6:08They redefined the crash zoom in Trial Lord.
- 6:12Nobody did it finer. I didn't realize how overblown
- 6:16the cliffhangers to whispers of terror were until you did it on
- 6:21your pod. They really are overblown.
- 6:24Oh, it's when he's going. You're destroying my mind,
- 6:31Perry. Oh my God, who's Sarah Jane?
- 6:34Come as now she's got like a flapper girl.
- 6:38Yes, or bandana around her head. She's Amelia Duka.
- 6:43Now you're talking, Ken. Consider me available for any
- 6:47future assignments. Why they call it operation?
- 6:51Nut house. Of What Car, actually, But
- 6:57there's another one with a great understated joke.
- 7:00The car is a material. I love her so much.
- 7:05Any Batty old woman, something. Don't.
- 7:08Do you remember that woman from the image of the Fendile?
- 7:11You know, the sort of psychic woman, the old mother.
- 7:14Don't go. Call me Grandma.
- 7:17This is a. Man of all, isn't it?
- 7:19Mrs. Pooh, Mrs. Pooh, yes. So I've watched that recently.
- 7:23You know, I love that when I was younger.
- 7:26Now I just see a load of lovely upper class snobs being terribly
- 7:30patronizing to everyone. It's probably those things I
- 7:33probably hate because, you know, I'm sure you've done it as well.
- 7:36Where you see a DVD boxer and you think I used to enjoy that
- 7:39when I was a kid. I'll buy that.
- 7:41I'll love it. Yes.
- 7:42Brilliant. And then you watch one and you
- 7:44think now I don't think I'll watch the rest.
- 7:47And it sits on your shelf, unloved forever.
- 7:49Yeah, I did that with sliders. When I was a kid.
- 7:52I used to wear sliders, and I watched it again as an adult.
- 7:55I couldn't even get through a single episode.
- 7:57It was really terrible. Do you know this robot
- 8:00staggering about all over here? Yeah.
- 8:02Paul Michael Kilgariff having to lumber about in that suit.
- 8:05If he'd gone over in that thing, he I think he would have done
- 8:08himself a proper mischief. Ken, if you met many Doctor Who
- 8:12alumni, any actors? Oh yeah, loads, yeah.
- 8:15Because I think Sergeant Benton, yes, I did.
- 8:18I met him in Newcastle a few years ago and he's a very
- 8:24interesting man, Bought a lovely man.
- 8:28He was utterly charming, I've got to say.
- 8:30And we had a good hour with him in the bar, and he was regaling
- 8:34us with all these stories because I asked him about
- 8:36recording with Big Finish, because I think he did one
- 8:39Council of War, I think it was. And then he had such a bad
- 8:43experience, he refused to do it again.
- 8:44And they had, they really had to coax him back.
- 8:47It all boiled down to something really silly, like the studios
- 8:51they recorded that were really grubby.
- 8:53He had to walk down a grubby back alley to get to the doors
- 8:56again, which is what all studios are like.
- 8:58And all theaters, they're all really grubby behind.
- 9:02It's only when you get into the places they're vaguely clean.
- 9:05It sounded really odd, but he was a nice guy and he bought us
- 9:09a drink and he chatted and it was just nice listening to this
- 9:12rack on. So he's quite self deprecating.
- 9:14I'm guessing your experience is slightly different.
- 9:17I've never met him, but what I do tend to do, you know, as I
- 9:21said, you are like my 70 of guests on this now is whenever
- 9:25he's on the screen, I will ask my guests, you know, have you
- 9:28met John Levine? Because the spectrum of stories
- 9:30that I've heard from everybody that's met him is gone from.
- 9:35Like, you just sat there, very charming to saying some people
- 9:38felt absolutely terrified in his presence to one person told me
- 9:42he started ranting on about a paedophile network that he was
- 9:46involved with. He was going to track them all
- 9:48down and kill them. I was like, oh, he sounds like
- 9:50an interesting bloke. Yeah, that blue text still
- 9:54untarded. It's messing with my head.
- 9:56Get rid of it. Okay.
- 9:59Right. Doctor Who?
- 10:00Dinner. Guess you've got 4.
- 10:03Oh yes, now you are talking. OK, well, I'll have William
- 10:06Hartnell there because I don't think we know too much about him
- 10:10behind the scenes. I really, obviously he really
- 10:12was a grumpy old bugger because some people say he was utterly
- 10:15charming. So William Hartnell for one.
- 10:17Terence Dix because talk about a rack on tour.
- 10:21I've seen him in a convention and he can spin a yawn.
- 10:24He says to Barry that Bowie. Now look, never let the truth
- 10:27get in the way of a good story. He can see me on.
- 10:33Um, who else? Who else?
- 10:35Any Russell T Davis? Oh yeah.
- 10:38I'd quite like to get to know who he is behind the
- 10:42everything's marvelous facade that he puts on, because when
- 10:46you read that book of his the the emails.
- 10:48But with Benjamin Benjamin, I wonder how much was trimmed out
- 10:52and sanitized for that book. Because I know.
- 10:56Bloody yeah, that was sanitized. It kind of a fascinating peek
- 11:00into the mind of a writer through the lens of psychosis.
- 11:05And the 4th one would be, is that tough question, you know,
- 11:09Yeah, I'm just, I've asked the question.
- 11:11I can't answer it myself. I'm having to think.
- 11:15OK, I'm going to throw John Levine in as well, just because.
- 11:18A dinner party featuring William Hartnell and John Levine.
- 11:21For that, you know, a treat. There's a great story in Jessica
- 11:25Carney's book about William Hartnell.
- 11:28At his cottage they're having lamb for dinner and he says
- 11:31there's no mint sauce. So he goes out into the garden
- 11:34and chops some mint and goes into the kitchen furiously
- 11:37making mint sauce from scratch to the point where when he gets
- 11:39back, his dinner's stone cold just to prove a point.
- 11:43Yeah, I could. But you like the yeah, there's
- 11:46also stories as well about him like telling off Caroline Ford
- 11:49and being really roots were and then sending out like, you know,
- 11:52luxurious bouquets of flower. It was to apologize.
- 11:55I think there was both sides to it, you know.
- 11:58Oh, like the right to everyone. Because I oh God, when I blow I
- 12:01can be a real Moody bastard. You don't want to see me behind
- 12:04the wheel. I'm horrible behind the wheel.
- 12:08Yeah. Oh yeah, I'm all I'm.
- 12:10All of you and you are charm personified.
- 12:14You haven't seen me in a supermarket stuck behind an old
- 12:17woman on a Saturday morning, screaming at her that she's had
- 12:22all week to go and burn fucking cat food.
- 12:25I work in a supermarket all right, so I have seen a similar
- 12:29sort of just go home. It's not a day out for me.
- 12:35Who would I have? You see, I want to say Tom
- 12:38Baker, but he would dominate the entire thing, so probably not.
- 12:43No one else would get a word in with that.
- 12:45No. You see Colin Baker for another.
- 12:48He's enormously entertaining to listen to when he he's on stage
- 12:52and talking. Who else?
- 12:55I'm going to have to think about this.
- 12:56I've painted myself into a corner asking a question I can't
- 12:59answer myself, which is very bad form.
- 13:02I come back to this at the end, at the end of the commentary.
- 13:05And then maybe. Oh, hang on.
- 13:06Look, we are going full nursing now.
- 13:08She's got a she's even gonna let.
- 13:11Supposed to be a rally, isn't it?
- 13:12But there's only about 12 people there and they've all come
- 13:14dressed as a snooker table. I love this in classic Who like
- 13:20hidden in plain sight. You know, nobody can see them.
- 13:25Her hair is going crazy there, isn't it?
- 13:28That is a hell of a speech. Sure, someone of The Muppets.
- 13:37This is where they revealed that Professor Kettlewell was a
- 13:39villain all along, as if we were in any doubt.
- 13:45I don't know though, Maybe that sort of bumbling, buffoon
- 13:48performance he's given? Maybe.
- 13:50Maybe the kids will be fooled. He isn't someone you'd like to
- 13:54have in a room reading stories to children though, is he?
- 13:58No, definitely not. There's even a stuffed dove in
- 14:01his pocket. He does.
- 14:02Yes, he does. I think it's the first time he
- 14:05uses the scarf as well. Swipes the man off the floor.
- 14:09Yeah, here we go. I do love this, This the idea
- 14:12that this is this is so Doctor Who, isn't it?
- 14:15The economy of this Nazi rally inside a, you know, church hall.
- 14:21How are this punch going to take over the world?
- 14:24Oh, look at him, rubbing the back of his head because he
- 14:26slipped on a scarf and not hit his head.
- 14:30What's always amused me in programs like this, particularly
- 14:33this era there, there's that listless chop to the back of the
- 14:36neck that renders them unconscious.
- 14:39How? Barry Let says.
- 14:41The characters and Doctor Who have very weak necks.
- 14:46Oh, somewhere, I do have unreleased interviews that I
- 14:49recorded at conventions. I've got at least one with
- 14:52tearing sticks and one with Barry.
- 14:55Let's I've got one somewhere with Mary Tam and they are going
- 14:59to make it onto excellence at some point.
- 15:01Absolute gold. Yeah.
- 15:03I had one with Elizabeth Clayden and I offered it to Doctor Who
- 15:06Magazine before I put it in the pod, and they never got back to
- 15:10me. And you think surely, surely
- 15:13that's something it's not something you can replicate.
- 15:17Yeah, that's crazy. It's Terry Walsham there.
- 15:20Yeah, I think that's him on the right there.
- 15:22Whoever he's playing, that character's in trouble.
- 15:25He's going to fall off a ladder or go for a window.
- 15:29The stunt in Is it Terror of the Autumns where that autumn goes
- 15:35head over heels down a quarry slope or something?
- 15:38That's a hell of a fall. That's Terry Walsh and he was
- 15:41deterred. He wanted to do it himself.
- 15:43He said I'm not bothered about the bloody money.
- 15:45I just want to have a go at it. And he think he's that he caught
- 15:48that up. There would have been arms and
- 15:49legs everywhere. It does go to show as well and I
- 15:52think Barrett's a pretty good director, but.
- 15:55That his instincts weren't always right because he goes,
- 15:57oh, you know, I really wish, you know, we'd taken some time to
- 15:59watch him getting up. No, the fact that he gets up
- 16:01straight away and starts walking up that hill again is what makes
- 16:05that moment scary. You know, he's had that terrible
- 16:08fall, and then he's up and coming after you again.
- 16:11Oh, watch this bit now as Jellico helps him down the
- 16:14stairs. It's supposed to be the most
- 16:18terrifying force in the universe, this robot that he
- 16:21needs a little help down the stairs.
- 16:24Does it matter though? I want to ask you that.
- 16:26Does it matter that this is a bit clunky to me and you?
- 16:31No. But we have to watch it through
- 16:35Pew Pew. We have to watch it through, not
- 16:38we eyes. And yeah, it's a bit hulky some
- 16:43of this. I've stopped doing that, I
- 16:46think. I think when I was a kid I was
- 16:48always watching through not we eyes and just agonized by so
- 16:51much of it. Because, you know, they didn't
- 16:54have the money and half the time they didn't have the talent
- 16:56involved to realize it in a spectacular way, as I would like
- 17:00it to be. I think I got to a point when I
- 17:03was about 30 or I was like, well, you know, it looks cheap,
- 17:06but let's just embrace it. I still wouldn't have it on,
- 17:10though. I don't think I wouldn't have it
- 17:12on, you know, with my family around.
- 17:15Yeah, watch this classic piece of tea.
- 17:17Even my all time classic favorite caves of Andrazani.
- 17:21You've got that big plastic dragon in it and.
- 17:25Say your favorite. Your all time favorite?
- 17:27Oh yeah, from classic Who Caves Andrazani.
- 17:29Yes. What about?
- 17:30Do you remember the episode of Only Fools and Horses where Dell
- 17:33Boy has that enormous mobile phone?
- 17:36Yes. You see the Brigadier right now
- 17:40with the largest Army radio in history on the day of recording
- 17:45It is 50 years to the day today since the very first mobile
- 17:50phone call, and it was from one engineer to another to gloat,
- 17:55that he had invented the mobile phone and got it working and the
- 17:58other one hadn't. I'm full of that sort of shit.
- 18:03Honestly, I'm here for it. 50 years.
- 18:05Did you say 50 years to the day? Yes, 3rd of April 2023.
- 18:10He would to commemorate that. I'm just gonna call you right
- 18:12now that way where we are not while Tom Baker's got a
- 18:16telescope in his hand leaning out of Bessie.
- 18:19This was all filmed. It's called Wood Naughton, isn't
- 18:22it? It's like a training ground.
- 18:25I think it's where they filmed a lot of spirit and space as well.
- 18:28Oh, did they? Yeah, I think so.
- 18:29Yeah. You know, you know, they were
- 18:31told they couldn't have the studio.
- 18:32So Derek Sherman was like, right, come on, give me a single
- 18:35camera. I'm off to Wood Norton.
- 18:36We're going to shoot the lot. Oh, don't you love the
- 18:41oldfashioned massive countdowns for the bombs?
- 18:45They weren't fucking about with black and white.
- 18:47We're going to have blue and green.
- 18:49And I love, you know, sort of the forward thinking spinning
- 18:51tape technology that is in all of these 70s science fiction
- 18:55programs. But imagine how messed up that
- 18:59countdown clock would be in Chroma Key.
- 19:03That's not hardware on display here though, isn't it?
- 19:06They just like playing with the massive weapons.
- 19:08Well, these big guns, right? And Jeeps and all that.
- 19:11And you're thinking, wow, there's a bit of money here.
- 19:14And then that toy tank turns up in a second.
- 19:16I don't remember the toy tank being that bad, but I'm looking
- 19:19forward to seeing this. Oh, you.
- 19:20Well, the funniest thing is, you know, they do these behind the
- 19:23sofas, these sort of gold box special features on the Blu
- 19:26Rays. You've got Janet Fielden and
- 19:28Peter Davidson and all that, watching this story.
- 19:31And they're all going, Oh my God, they managed to afford a
- 19:34tank in this. I'm like, oh, come on, like,
- 19:38don't over egg the pudding there, sweetheart.
- 19:40You'll never. Reach those.
- 19:42Have you met Janet Fielding? No, I have.
- 19:45I've seen her at a Comm, but I've not actually spoken to her
- 19:47a matter. She's an absolute riot.
- 19:50I bet she is as well. I don't think there's any real
- 19:53difference between her and Tegan on screen.
- 19:56You know, did you see that there a second ago?
- 19:58That extreme close up where Miss Winters was being spectacularly
- 20:01evil on the phone? That's great.
- 20:04We've lost in today's television.
- 20:07What do you reckon to this? And the whole Sarah Jane?
- 20:10What sort of fayre, isn't it? It's King Kong, that's what
- 20:15it's. I swear that's what it's
- 20:17supposed to be. Boy, that was a Big Bang.
- 20:21Jesus, is there anything left of that tower laughing?
- 20:25So as you remember in episode 4, when the robot picks up the
- 20:29Dolly that's supposed to be Sarah Jane.
- 20:31I'm afraid I do. Yes, it's all flooding back now.
- 20:34Preemptively. There you go.
- 20:40He's causing a ton of explosions there.
- 20:42That's the Paul Baker I remember.
- 20:44That sonic's got no lid on it. It's the War Doctor, Sonic.
- 20:48I don't know the ward off tram in a Sonic, did he?
- 20:51It was like the 4th Doctor Sonic without the bulb on the end
- 20:55because he was not paying enough attention that day of the
- 20:57Doctor. Day the Doctor is outright hands
- 21:00out. You see no bulb on the end.
- 21:01It's just got a little. He's put the bulb on the end.
- 21:05Cut out the lock for you. It shouldn't take.
- 21:09He's cutting through. Go on.
- 21:11Day of The Doctor is out and out.
- 21:12My favorite. My all time favorite knew who
- 21:15still never been bettered for me.
- 21:17So what? Classic caves.
- 21:19New day, OK. Yourself.
- 21:23Oh come on, that is such a tough issue.
- 21:25Answer classic. You're going to think I'm mad,
- 21:29but remember, horses courses. Maybe the war games.
- 21:34I love the war. You fucking joking.
- 21:38Now I'm serious. I love it.
- 21:40And new See we are basically. You're insulting me already.
- 21:49And then knew who? You're gonna think I'm even more
- 21:51mad. I think my favorite episode of
- 21:52Knew Who might be Turn Left from series 40.
- 21:56I can see that. I can see why it's a very it's
- 21:59unusual and it's quite clever as well and it's got some good
- 22:02lines on it. He blows up bloody London going.
- 22:05Back inside Vera Duckworth and Feed Whip.
- 22:15Oh that the robot is is all stomping off now with his That's
- 22:19the Disintegrator gun. This is what we've been leading
- 22:21up to throughout this entire thing is the components and the
- 22:25plans for this amazing weapon that the robot's got.
- 22:28Now what does it do? It disintegrates people.
- 22:31Just what it says on the 10. OK, fine.
- 22:35Then you tell me why. When the Brigadier Nicks the
- 22:39disintegrator gun off the robot and uses it on the robot, it
- 22:43doesn't disintegrate. It grows.
- 22:45It reverses the polarity. You're just making this up.
- 22:51Aren't you? I am.
- 22:52Look, here's my limp risted gum Pew Pew.
- 22:59Oh my God, John Levine's like, oh, I don't want to be in this
- 23:03anymore. Oh, here we go.
- 23:05Are you seeing this? Are you seeing this tank?
- 23:10I mean, it's the scale. Look at the scale difference.
- 23:14It's not overly terrible. Actually that is pretty bad I
- 23:20suppose. It's on your screen for about 20
- 23:22seconds, so. Oh, I wish they'd given that
- 23:26robot less limp hands. Look at it.
- 23:29They can't keep it up. They can't keep his gun up.
- 23:32No, this comes not erect. Bless him.
- 23:36Couple of shots and he's gone a limp.
- 23:44So Ken, I'm going to ask you at the end of episode 3 how you
- 23:47finding this story so far. It's everything I expected it
- 23:52would be an absolute gem at the start of Tom Baker's reign.
- 24:04So who do we think had the best opening story of a doctor?
- 24:08Oh, that's a tricky one. A lot of people would say 11th
- 24:14hour, wouldn't they? From Matt Smith.
- 24:16I do like it, yeah. Yeah, I like that one.
- 24:20I think Power of the Daleks is really strong.
- 24:22I don't think you can go wrong with that.
- 24:23You see, for me, and I suspect Simon Exton, if he was here,
- 24:27Power is a bloody classic. It's six episodes long and it
- 24:31never drags. And this very few 6 episodes
- 24:34that don't drag. It's got a sense of momentum to
- 24:39it as well, hasn't it? With the Daleks or behaving
- 24:41deviously in the background building up that army.
- 24:44And then in episode 6, they finally tear out and massacre
- 24:47everybody. It's fairly unpleasant.
- 24:49Episode 6. So yeah, I would.
- 24:52I would go with that. I'd certainly go with that one
- 24:54for classic, who for knew who? And I know that this will not be
- 24:59universally loved. It's deep breath.
- 25:01I knew you were going to say that.
- 25:03I knew it. Because it's so cinematic, yeah,
- 25:07it's been leveled at it that it's a bit empty.
- 25:10I don't get that. It's so filmic, that episode.
- 25:14It's a joy to watch. I mean, I think as a reinvention
- 25:18of the series, Rose is very good.
- 25:20As a Doctor Who episode, it's pretty terrible.
- 25:22Yeah, as as a sort of introducing the audience to,
- 25:26like, all the basic tenants of the show, It's great.
- 25:29Maybe the 11th power in the new series?
- 25:31It is Gordon, very confident. So I've blanched at your deep
- 25:35breath. You've blanched at my war games.
- 25:38You see, I'm going to. I'm going to salve the wound
- 25:42here. War Games I only saw for the
- 25:45first time when we did our podcast on it.
- 25:47I deliberately saved it up and I think the Time Lords in that are
- 25:53badasses. Fog.
- 25:55They are properly, they do not care, and they've got these
- 26:00proper powers. Don't piss me off, or we'll just
- 26:04erase you from time and we won't even get angry about it.
- 26:08But you're going to also say it's too long, aren't you?
- 26:11It is too long, but it's not its fault.
- 26:13It was. That was necessity of the time.
- 26:15I mean, we watched it episodically and it didn't drag.
- 26:19I think if you tried to watch more than, say three or four in
- 26:23one girl, it would really detract.
- 26:26It would feel like it's dragging on.
- 26:28But if you watch it episodically, actually.
- 26:30It's not that bad. I watched it one episode a day
- 26:34across 10 days back in the mid 90s, and I was absolutely
- 26:40hooked. And I still think Trou's
- 26:42performance in that is just one of the best Doctor performances
- 26:45you're ever going to say. I love it.
- 26:47I love the war games and I'll have many people tell me I'm mad
- 26:50and other people tell me that. And that's the joy of this
- 26:53thing, isn't it? Is that we're all coming with
- 26:55different opinions. We've all got podcasts where we
- 26:57can argue it out. Yes.
- 26:59What else would we be doing with our time?
- 27:04Useful things, I'm sure. Well, look, on that note, shall
- 27:07we skip into Episode 4? We've got some phenomenal
- 27:11special effects to get through yet.
- 27:13Oh God, I can't wait to be finished off.
- 27:18I'm going to cut it there. I'm still with a plump pen light
- 27:25for doing quicker, quicker.
