- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 13th of February. So glad to have your company as
- 0:20this week. Well it's not too far till we
- 0:24wrap up another week. I don't know how your weeks are
- 0:26going but oh Gee, this is a big week.
- 0:29These are big weeks, I should say, in our place, with new
- 0:33schools and children moving out to go to university in different
- 0:37places. And what else is well, I'm not
- 0:41even home this week. Oh yeah, I am in the nation's
- 0:44capital, being sent there doing some more army training.
- 0:48Yes, yes, I've been yelled at by corporals.
- 0:50I've learnt how to behave like an officer and now I am covering
- 0:55the minutia, the insurance and outs, the details of what it
- 0:59means to be a chaplain in our defence forces.
- 1:02So this is a very good week, a very good fortnight for me as
- 1:05I'll be learning new things and answering all these questions
- 1:10that have been kind of floating around my service over the last
- 1:13year and a bit. But that's what's going on for
- 1:16me. I wonder how you are going.
- 1:18I'm sure your life is full of just as many challenges, just as
- 1:22many exciting things, just as many tricky things.
- 1:25Because Friends, Life is full and varied and that is why I am
- 1:31so grateful that you still, in the midst of the complexity of
- 1:34your days, choose to pause and with me spend some time in God's
- 1:41Word. Good for you friend.
- 1:42I hope that this really does bless you with great dividends
- 1:48as you OfferUp this time in worship.
- 1:51And so that is what we are going to continue to do today as we
- 1:55hear more about the people around Elisha.
- 1:59And then we're going to go back to seeing what those kings are
- 2:01getting up to in the north and in the South as we read together
- 2:05Second Kings chapter 8, Elisha had told the woman whose son he
- 2:20had brought back to life. Take your family and move to
- 2:24some other place. For the Lord has called for a
- 2:27famine on Israel that will last for seven years.
- 2:31So the woman did as the man of God instructed.
- 2:34She took her family and settled in the land of the Philistines
- 2:37for seven years. After the famine ended, she
- 2:41returned from the land of the Philistines, and she went to see
- 2:44the king about getting back her house and land.
- 2:47As she came in, the king was talking with Jahazi, the servant
- 2:51of the man of God. The king had just said Tell me
- 2:55some stories about the great things Elisha has done and
- 2:59Gehazi was telling the king about the time Elisha had
- 3:02brought a boy back to life. At that very moment, the mother
- 3:06of the boy walked in to make her appeal to the king about her
- 3:09house and land. Look my Lord, the king.
- 3:13Gehazi exclaimed. Here is the woman now and this
- 3:16is her son, the very one Elisha brought back to life.
- 3:20Is this true? The king asked her and she told
- 3:25him the story, so he directed one of his officials to see that
- 3:28everything she had lost was restored to her, including the
- 3:32value of any crops that had been harvested during her absence.
- 3:38Elisha went to Damascus, the capital of Aram, where King Ben
- 3:42Haddad lay sick. When someone told the king that
- 3:45the man of God had come, the king said to Hazael, take a gift
- 3:49to the man of God and tell him to ask the Lord, will I recover
- 3:54from this illness. So Hazael loaded down 40 camels
- 3:59with the finest products of Damascus as a gift for Elisha.
- 4:04He went to him and said, Your servant Ben Haddad, the king of
- 4:09Aram has sent me to ask will I recover from this illness?
- 4:15And Elisha replied, go and tell him, you will surely recover.
- 4:21But actually, the Lord has shown me that he will surely die.
- 4:26Elisha stared at Hazael with a fixed gaze, until Hazael became
- 4:30uneasy. Then the man of God started
- 4:34weeping. What's the matter, my Lord?
- 4:37Hazael asked him. Elisha replied.
- 4:40I know the terrible things you will do to the people of Israel.
- 4:45It will burn their fortified cities, kill their young men
- 4:49with the sword, dash their little children to the ground,
- 4:52and RIP open their pregnant women.
- 4:55Hazael responded, How could a nobody like me ever accomplish
- 5:00such great things? Elisha answered, The Lord has
- 5:05shown me that you are going to be the king of Aram.
- 5:09When Hazael left Elisha and went back, the king asked him what
- 5:15did Elisha tell you? And Hazael replied, He told me
- 5:20that you will surely recover. But the next day Hazael took a
- 5:26blanket, soaked it in water, and held it over the King's face
- 5:31until he died. Then Hazael became the next king
- 5:35of Aram. Jehoram, son of King Jehoshaphat
- 5:40of Judah, began to rule over Judah in the fifth year of the
- 5:43reign of Joram, son of Ahab, king of Israel.
- 5:47Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king, and he reigned in
- 5:51Jerusalem eight years. But Jehoram followed the example
- 5:55of the kings of Israel, and was as wicked as King Ahab, for he
- 6:00had married 1 of Ahab's daughters.
- 6:03So Jehoram did what was evil in the Lord's sight.
- 6:06But the Lord did not want to destroy Judah, for He had
- 6:10promised his servant David that his descendants would continue
- 6:14to rule, shining like a lamp forever.
- 6:18During Jehoram's reign, the Edomites revolted against Judah
- 6:22and crowned their own king. So Jehoram went with all his
- 6:27Chariots to attack the town of Zaya.
- 6:30The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he
- 6:34went out at night and attacked them under the cover of
- 6:37darkness. But Jehoram's army deserted him
- 6:41and fled to their homes. So Edom has been independent
- 6:45from Judah to this day. The town of Libna also revolted
- 6:49about the same time. The rest of the events in
- 6:53Jehoram's reign and everything he did are recorded in the book
- 6:57of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 7:00When Jehoram died, he was buried with his ancestors in the city
- 7:04of David. Then his son Ahaziah became the
- 7:07next king. Aiziah, son of Jehoram, began to
- 7:12rule over Judah in the 12th year of the reign of Joram, son of
- 7:16Ahab, king of Israel. Ahaziah was 22 years old when he
- 7:21became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year.
- 7:26His mother was Atalia, a granddaughter of King Omri of
- 7:30Israel. Aaziah followed the evil example
- 7:33of King Ahab's family. He did what was evil in the
- 7:37Lord's sight, just as Ahab's family had done, for he was
- 7:41related by marriage to the family of Ahab.
- 7:44Ahaziah joined Joram, son of Ahab, in his war against King
- 7:49Hazael of Aram at Ramoth, Gilead.
- 7:52When the Aramaeans wounded King Joram in the battle, he returned
- 7:56to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had received at
- 7:59Ramoth. Because Joram was wounded, King,
- 8:02a Isaiah of Judah went to Jezreel to visit him.
- 8:16Our Lord, as we read this chapter, there's so much going
- 8:19on. People returning to their homes
- 8:21and having their goods return to them.
- 8:24Terrible, terrible visions of the future.
- 8:27Kings taking on allegiances and nations continuing down their
- 8:32paths. Lord, our lives are full and
- 8:35busy and our world continues to go round and round.
- 8:41Lord, in the midst of all of the stuff that goes on in life,
- 8:45Lord, I pray that you would continue to draw us back to you
- 8:49as the world invites us to worship at the throne of
- 8:53busyness and productivity and success.
- 8:57Lord, I pray that Your throne would sit above that and that we
- 9:02would, just as we are at the moment stopping from the
- 9:05business of the day, just come to you to be in your presence
- 9:11and to be aware of your goodness and your love, Your mercy and
- 9:17your righteousness. Because you are God of all and
- 9:23you are our God and we are Your people.
- 9:27May that always play front and centre in the games of our
- 9:32lives. And when we fail to do that, we
- 9:36thank you for Jesus and for the forgiveness that He has won for
- 9:40us. You are our wonderful, loving
- 9:43Father and we love you. And we recommit ourselves to you
- 9:47this day. Amen.
