- 3:32I mister Nathan's house people. You were the one who called me at the
- 3:35headquarters. I was just sleep and I heard noises down below. I looked
- 3:38down the heirs and they were too many killing away mister Nathan before I see
- 3:44Why did you scream? Because I thought it was coming from me too.
- 3:46Where's mister Nathan? I he was just slap in his room in left not
- 3:53there now and I down. You say you searched the house as have one
- 3:57room, but room was glass next to sonny stools. He ain't been opened
- 4:00in twenty Well, it's going to be open now. Where is it?
- 4:03Semester? Where is it? Oh? What? Where's the keys? Had
- 4:12the key in that room since his wife died twenty years ago? You know
- 4:15he hasn't planned the shoulder here feet? Yes, yeah, she's right,
- 4:26Lieutenant. Nobody's been in this room for a long time. We'll say you
- 4:29switch on the light light years How do you know Nathan twenty years help,
- 4:34he wouldn't allow the electric Put the lights in the room. All the candles
- 4:39over there on that bookcase, Ryan, line them up. There's been somebody
- 4:44in this room recently, Lieutenant. The footprints in the dust here, man's
- 4:47footprints. We did that couch over there, but they don't come back,
- 4:51Sir, they're one way print. Something screwy. Here, Jerk the sheet
- 4:55off of that couch. Feet, Yes, what's the he's a nest.
- 5:03It's him all right, don't try to wake him up, Pete, he's
- 5:08dead. Well, did you find out what killed him? Dark? Yes,
- 5:27it's rather or Lieutenant your man died of a hypodermic injection just above the
- 5:30heart. What poison was his, minister, You could hardly call it a
- 5:34poison. Adan died from an injection of an overdose of cocaine. Cocaine.
- 5:40Do you think he was a drug addict? Well, hardly. Oh.
- 5:43You figure that it's clear that Nathan was not an addict from the absence of
- 5:46stars on his legs. Are on you call it homicide? That's up to
- 5:48the corner. I withhold my report and said, you, fellows, find
- 5:51a hypodermic strange which killed him, don't worry about We'll find it. And
- 5:56when we do, we'll tell you whether he use it himself or whether somebody
- 5:58else use it. Well, that's you know, Blue Dennis. I'm going
- 6:00on, okay, doc hard to find out sete Oh. I found that
- 6:04mister Nathan has a son living in Frettonville, just twenty miles away. I
- 6:09called him and told him to come right over good. And I found out
- 6:11that missus Donovan and Nathan were the only ones who slept in the house.
- 6:14Anybody else around, the chauffeur, cook or somebody nobody except the gardener.
- 6:18Oh, follow up with the name of dan Bee. He speaks in a
- 6:21room above the garage. Call him in. Yes, you think it's homicide,
- 6:26sir. I'm not sure yet, looks as if it might be.
- 6:28But this door was locked from the inside, sir, and all the windows
- 6:31were locked and bolded. Yeah more, I know, I know. And
- 6:34there's only one set of footprints in the dust leading to that sofa where Nathan
- 6:38is lying the prince. Don't fret Nathan's shoes what? Oh? No,
- 6:41stand there with your mouth open, hotted Nathan getting the room with the prince
- 6:44where it is, that's easy. He was carried in. Oh, there
- 6:46are no tracks leading away from the corpse. Out of the murderer get out.
- 6:49That's something I've still got to figure out. Maybe he got out with
- 6:51the trampe Oh use your head, Pete. The baby couldn't get through that
- 6:55transom. Yeah, you're right, Lieutenant. Now, if you're through asking
- 6:57questions, you will get damned to the gardener. I'd like to talk with
- 6:59it. I've got a feeling that he can help us out. Your name
- 7:24is Danby. Did you hear the burglars who broke in here last night?
- 7:27Oh? I didn't. Well, then, how does it happen that you're
- 7:29fully dressed at two o'clock in the morning when my men get here. And
- 7:31I was in bed when I hear missus Jonovan strange. Right, I pulled
- 7:34on my pants and shirt and I'm running over. How long to take you
- 7:38to dress? Say about three minutes? And you saw nothing of the burglars?
- 7:43Okay? Was the front door open a lot? Don't walk right in?
- 7:46Let me see, mister Danby, do you know of anyone who'd benefit
- 7:49from mister Nathan's death? Lord? Would Donovan me have been with the old
- 7:54man for now on the twenty five years? They both get something under it?
- 7:58Whill and mister Howard John coming for right? Smart bees for my niece
- 8:01out and I see? And did you like mister Nathan? Yeah? I
- 8:05can't say I liked him or didn't like him. Job to me, that's
- 8:09all and fis he's right nice to me. And sometimes you right mean everybody
- 8:13like that? You can't well, well, missus Donovan and mister Nathan the
- 8:16only person is living in this house. Yes, why did you hesitate before
- 8:20your answer? Mister dandee? Let me remind you Danby, there was a
- 8:26murder committed here this evening. Murder is a serious matter. You know anything
- 8:30of value to us, it's your duty to make it known. Now,
- 8:31who else lived in this house besides Missus Donovan and mister Nathan. All right,
- 8:37Missus Donovan, that question? Do you think? She answered no?
- 8:39Then it's up to you to tell us where You're right? There's someone else
- 8:43living here, only nobody except Missus Donovan, mister Nathan, myself. Who
- 8:48another manchack? Missus Donovan's son. Well, why didn't Missus Donovan tell us
- 8:52that in cars? Their son ain't exactly right? What do you mean,
- 8:58Danny? That's son's name has been kept locked up in Missus Donovan's room for
- 9:01five years. Only let out? Now, man? You mean he's in
- 9:05changing He studied to be a doctor and away to school for years, and
- 9:11he had an accident explosion, he compy. Do you think he killed Nathan?
- 9:15I don't know her, but I do know mister Nathan was scared of
- 9:18him. The boy Danny holds term of fits seppings to care folks. Mister
- 9:22Nathan told me once he was scared Danny had killed him. And I see,
- 9:26all right, you can go Danby, but don't leave the place.
- 9:30I won't try to get the idea of asking all the questions about the sun.
- 9:35Oh, I don't know, just a hunch. I guess right.
- 9:37Nathan got here yet and not yet asked missus Donovan to come back in here
- 9:39for a minute. All right, Yes, you did come in, Missus
- 9:45Donovan. I was passing in the hall store and I thought I heard you
- 9:48call my name. You weren't, by any chance listening at the door.
- 9:50Oh loose, sir, But what did old Danby chase? I don't trust
- 9:54him. Him and mister Howard's been getting pretty sick. La. Do you
- 9:58trust how not anymore, sir, since he's been running with that city Blow
- 10:03used to come here every day after he started for money. He got right
- 10:05mad the other day when mister Nathan refused to give him anymore. Oh he
- 10:09did did. Oh, I wanted to ask you about your son. It's
- 10:15all right, mister Donovan. Dany told me all about it. I'm awfully
- 10:18sorry for you. Where is your son now? He's gone, he's not
- 10:22in the house. No. When mister Howard Layton came the other day,
- 10:26I had him take him away to a hospital. Oh, I know what
- 10:30you're thinking, and I'm glad now that Howard took me anyway. Are you
- 10:33sure that mister Howard Nathan didn't bring him back last night? No, he
- 10:37took him the day before yesterday. Howard Nathan hasn't been backed. I say,
- 10:43how about the mass or, sir? Did he he was murdered,
- 10:46Missus Donovan, by someone who used a hypodermic syringe. It's true, Missus
- 10:50Donovan, he was murdered, and I think I know who did it.
- 10:52We're coming back in the morning. And searched this house from top to bottom
- 10:56for the hypodermic niggle that was used to kill him. I don't know what
- 11:15you've got up your sleeve. Lint out here and the pushes behind the house
- 11:18for three hours and give us away hard about an hour ago. Yeah,
- 11:26you know, somebody's going out that door stuck down. We want to be
- 11:31seen whatever is going out to that tree over there, say they kind of
- 11:35shovel just what we want. Come on, all right, get him quick.
- 11:39I got him, sir, But it's thought of him. It's on
- 11:43her. You don't let me go. Take your hand there, uhh,
- 11:48hypodermic natal Just as I expected. She killed Nathan. She knew we were
- 11:52coming back in the morning, and we'd find both the needle and the body.
- 11:54The body, yes, the body of her son. Nathan was afraid
- 11:58for his life. Wait the boy, and he killed the boy. Missus
- 12:01Donovan killed Nathan because she knew Nathan killed her son. Then there's been two
- 12:05murders here, yes, and one of them has already been avenged, hasn't
- 12:07it, Missus Donovan, Yes, I kill him. He kills the only
- 12:13one I loved in all the world. My boy, He's never coming back
- 12:20to me. You know where's your son's body? Missus Doland? Did you
- 12:26leaning on an old offle up in the fourth floor. I'm sorry, Missus
- 12:35Doland. I'll have to arrest you for the murder of Isaac Nathan. Police,
- 12:56all right, this is hello Tim, call a Policemakron to come down
- 13:01and take charge of a prisoner. HOWMASI detailed, Captain Gregory? This is
- 13:09oh. Yes, the house at the home of Alexander mister is just beIN
- 13:16found dead on the roof of his house. Wants the address out there grave
- 13:20about a half mile house of the road. What were the circumstances surrounding the
- 13:26dead? Oh? No, one needs to know. Sound with a bullet
- 13:31room to the right. Are there any other guests? I'll give orders for
- 13:35knowing to leave the place. I don't there. In twenty minutes, m
- 13:43got a fast car. We're making a call of Twin Oaks. Old Alex
- 13:46McKenzie us been found dead. Well, uh, what did you find on
- 13:56McKenzie? Nothing much, captain. He made a lot of money on the
- 14:00market, then got odd well to get him as good lives out in the
- 14:03country. Doctor's orders because men is Jake pretty well hitted by everyone and one
- 14:09man in particular though about the name of Gleeson used to be a business associated
- 14:13McKenzie's. They sput up about ten years ago over one. Well, I
- 14:18couldn't get the top on that, Captain. You did pretty good as it
- 14:22is. Step on a mic, Yes, sir, one of the police
- 14:31coming. Doctors, I have holed them ten minutes ago. They could be
- 14:35here any moments now. Who did you get a hold of? Doctor why?
- 14:37Oh, here they are now you're Captain Gregory. Yes, I am
- 14:41doctor Manthew, Doctor Mathew. This is mister Gleason and claud Patterson. Oh
- 14:48the fire yes, God to know you captain who found mister Mackenzie's body,
- 14:52mister Gleeson, Is that right, mister Gleeson, Yes, well you'll please
- 14:56please go to the broof with me. I want the others to remain he
- 15:00suddenly, and see you do it, Mike, right, So this way,
- 15:03Captain, there's a private elevator to the roof. You lead away anyone
- 15:07else in the house. Yes, there's Margie, Missus Mackenzie, and doctor
- 15:11Matthew's wife. You were pretty well acquainted with McKenzie, yes, unfortunately and
- 15:18his wife? Yes? How well did you know missus Mackenzie? Very well.
- 15:24I was engaged to her before Alex married him. See how does it
- 15:26happen that you're here? Denied, mister Gleeson. And I understand from rumored
- 15:31that there was no love lost between you and Mackenzie. That's right. I
- 15:33hated him and he hated me. Don't get the impression that I killed him,
- 15:37Captain, because as much as I hated him, I regard for Margie
- 15:41would restrain any homicidal intentions. Life with him has been difficult enough as it
- 15:46is. Here we are what this price? This is a roof guard.
- 15:52Mister Mackenzie had it converted into a sort of Metaorrologists laboratory, and he was
- 15:56an amateur metrologist with the one half. Where's the body? You will find
- 16:02it over by the railing at the far corner of the room. And you
- 16:03don't mind coming with me, not if it's necessary. I'm sorry it is,
- 16:08And I'm not very well acquainted with meteorology. Perhaps you will tell me
- 16:12briefly what Mackenzie did all sorts of things. Predicted weather changes, measured rainfall,
- 16:19estimated wind velocities. I am not much on the subject myself or the
- 16:23body is just over here, Captain shot born. The doctor said, right,
- 16:29funtle, if that means anything. We're in golf clothes. And the
- 16:33button flinched in his left hand, fell in an awkward position. I wonder
- 16:38he didn't fall over the railing. You were the one to find him,
- 16:42Yes? Was he lying in the same position? Yes, you know where
- 16:45this button came from. No. Who was the last person to see him
- 16:51alive? I was, Oh you were? Where was he when you last
- 16:56time? Just where he is lying? Well? Did you see anything in
- 17:00the gun that was used to killing? I didn't stop to look. Has
- 17:04anybody been up here since you came down? Yes? All of us,
- 17:07Doctor Matthews took charge. He told us the man was dead, and then
- 17:11his wife took missus McKenzie to her room. Will you ask doctor Matthews and
- 17:18Clyde Patterson to step up here? There are some questions for the answer before
- 17:21we clear this thing up. That's all you know. Patterson? Yes,
- 17:41and you doctor, Well, I'm afraid I can't tell you any more than
- 17:45mister Patterson. We were all at luncheon after a round of golf. Attends
- 17:51he hadn't been playing, but he had been drinking heavily. After luncheon,
- 17:55he asked mister Gleeson to step up to the roof, that he had something
- 17:57to show it, and mister Gleason agreed. Yes. They were up here
- 18:02about five or ten minutes, and then Gleason came down greatly agitated. He
- 18:07was muttering something about breaking Mackenzie's neck. What then? Then Gleason said,
- 18:12I'll show him and went back upstairs again. It was less than a minute
- 18:17until he informed us that Mackenzie had been shot. Did either one of you
- 18:21hear the shot? I didn't not, did Ie? Is there any other
- 18:25way up here except for that elevator? No? I wish I knew what
- 18:29size gun was used to kill him? You have any idea, doctor,
- 18:33Yes, I have. He was killed with a rather unusual gun, probably
- 18:38a dringer, A positive but reasonably so. And nobody has seen anything of
- 18:45a gun. No, I believe the custom for a murderer to hide the
- 18:49weapon? Is it not necessarily? I noticed powder drains on the man's face.
- 18:56How far away would gun be held to inflickor burn like that? Oh?
- 19:00Less than the foot, I'd say. Now, doctor, here's a
- 19:03question about Mackenzie's health. Why did you order him to take up residence in
- 19:07the country because of his lungs and hearts? H Alexander Mackenzie was a very
- 19:11sick man. He had less than six months to live. He knew this.
- 19:15Why yeah, Oh, who's that mister Gleeson? Oh good, step
- 19:21over here a minute. Yes. What did Mackenzie tell you up here that
- 19:26made you flare up? Oh? Nothing much that I had never left to
- 19:29get margin anything else, nothing important. One word led to another I left.
- 19:34I was very angry. I noticed that you changed your coat, Grayson.
- 19:37Why it was uncomfortably warm up here in the sun. That wasn't the
- 19:41reason. Why The reason was you saw me find that small black button in
- 19:45Mackenzie's dead hand. That button came from the sleeve of your coat and you
- 19:48knew it. Yes, But I didn't kill him. I didn't. And
- 19:51you came here to night with a darringer pistol, didn't you. Why why
- 19:53I tell the truth, Gleason? Why why? Yes? I carried one
- 19:57for years in my top coat and Mackenzie knewartt Yes, where's this pistol?
- 20:02Now? I know you're not going to believe this story, but I looked
- 20:06in the coastal port. But I went downstairs and it was gone. On
- 20:08the other hand, that's exactly what I expected. You will think I killed
- 20:11it. You'll think I don't think anything. I know that Mackenzie's death was
- 20:15suicide. Yes, but where's the gun? Gom in search the grounds and
- 20:19house and it's not around the car. Yeah, it doesn't make any difference.
- 20:22It was suicide. This time, I'm working on the other side.
- 20:26I'm working to save Gleason here from the chair. Not quick, You can
- 20:29tell me something about some of these gadgets so I can, Oh, sure
- 20:33you're a fire. What's this barometer? Measure's the pressure? Which way is
- 20:36the wind blowing? Now? Dyle reads west. How fast an thermometer says
- 20:40five miles an hour? Party blowing one of these sounding balloons, the four
- 20:45feet in diameter when inflated, it tends to used them to redispeat of the
- 20:48winds? And law measured their flights were transit. What is the lifting bar
- 20:52of one of these balloons? Let's see speed hydrogen? We list two and
- 20:56three quarter pounds the bloom weighted purns about one? Good? Now, at
- 21:02what altitude will the air pressure and the weight of a balloon like this with
- 21:06a pound weight equalized? You mean where would it stop rising? About four
- 21:11thousand feet? Good? Now? What time was Mackenzie killed? Doctor?
- 21:15About one? And it's two thirty now, Patterson, Yes, your ship
- 21:18is on Mackenzie's golf course, isn't it? Yes? I want to use
- 21:21it. Your only instructions are climbed to four thousand feet, fly due west
- 21:23about five and a half miles, and all the time keep your eyes peeled
- 21:26for a four foot balloon? Haven't you seen anything of the chest? Captain
- 21:56very will? What that dust to our left? I don't know. I'll
- 22:00find out that's the boon? All right? God, calculations are right.
- 22:07Put me in close to it. What are you going to do? I'm
- 22:08gonna try to put a couple of bullets into it. Your job is to
- 22:11fallow down. Okay, how's that? Good? Hold it? I got
- 22:21it? Following down Patterson. Okay, Captain hold on a gon had McKenzie's
- 22:51own prints on it. Well, that's right. Nice job of flying,
- 22:56Patterson. Good calculations to take a bunch of vocals for yourself, Captain,
- 23:00Well, job of deduction. I went on hunches mostly Mackenzie hated Gleason.
- 23:04Therefore he had some reason for asking him up of the roof. I knew
- 23:07that he was going to He knew that he was going to die, and
- 23:11Gleason had get his wife after all, So he planned to kill himself and
- 23:14pentadon to Gleason. Someone I like that, you know, Kensey was a
- 23:17bit more. But anyway, I noticed that the first time I met him,
- 23:19and we failed to find a pistol. Gleason's pistol, I knew it
- 23:22was murdered. The idea of Mackenzie tying it onto a sounding balloon so to
- 23:26float away when he shot himself was just a hunch, but it worked out.
- 23:30Yes, But the button you found in Mackenzie's hand. It was the
- 23:34first thing that gave his suicide away. That button hadn't been pourn from gleason
- 23:38sleeve. It had been cut what cut by Mackenzie from gleason sleeve while he
- 23:42was playing golf. Police Headquarters, all right, Captain Kim take that card
- 24:00on the mcindication market suicide, Well, he said, Quarters, welcome back.
- 24:25These were the type of episodes I was really thinking about when I added
- 24:29Police Headquarters to our lineup. I know we've had some episodes that were not
- 24:36at the highest caliber, but these were two very good short mysteries. I
- 24:42particularly liked the Mackenzie death. I think that the way that that was done
- 24:49that had to be one of the more clever ways to get rid of the
- 24:53murder gun or suicide gun, excuse me. And then the first one,
- 24:57the Isaac Nathan. It's hard to not sympathize with the killer in that case
- 25:04because the way that Nathan killed her son is like he thought he was putting
- 25:10down an animal until you get a pretty understandable reaction. Police Headquarters will actually
- 25:15next be heard on Monday. We'll be wrapping up manhunt and we only have
- 25:21one fifty a quarter hour episode of Manhunt, so we're combining it with an
- 25:27episode of Police Headquarters. So listen to Police Headquarters on Monday, and then
- 25:32of course we'll be back here next Saturday with two more episodes of Police Headquarters.
