- 0:11Speaker 1: Oh, look at this duo. It is Braun and Spilly.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Ryan Spillborg's joining me, and we are about to dive
- 0:18Speaker 2: into a couple games, but we'll, of course, start with
- 0:21Speaker 2: the Padres. That's a fresh run right now, and they
- 0:23Speaker 2: were just able to completely dominate the Cubs over a
- 0:29Speaker 2: couple games. Spilly, it almost looks like you're wearing the
- 0:31Speaker 2: shirt right now.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The Tati shirt right there with the little pot.
- 0:34Speaker 3: El Nino. Yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I look good in brown.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I look really good in brown. Brown you can wear
- 0:43Speaker 3: with anything, I guess.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Is that what they say? Well, that's what they say
- 0:48Speaker 2: in San Diego right now. They love the brown. They're celebrating.
- 0:51Speaker 2: They're popping bottles. We're doing this live right now. So
- 0:54Speaker 2: Padres completely, utterly dominant in this two-game little performance here
- 1:00Speaker 2: in the wildcard. We're going to get Spilly's thoughts. So
- 1:02Speaker 2: let's start it off, first of all, with our full count.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It's a full count. Oh, yeah, it is.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Full count is fueled by marathon. Let's do this. What
- 1:15Speaker 1: did you see, Spilly, over these couple games?
- 1:18Speaker 2: A lot of screaming and cheering and happiness from a
- 1:21Speaker 2: team that dominates at home.
- 1:24Speaker 3: It goes to show you how important the wild card
- 1:26Speaker 3: is to have some home field advantage, unless you're Houston,
- 1:29Speaker 3: because they can't win at home. But when it comes
- 1:31Speaker 3: to San Diego, this has been a team that I've watched, obviously,
- 1:34Speaker 3: in the National League West, covering the Rockies and going
- 1:37Speaker 3: to San Diego all the time. This is a ballpark where,
- 1:41Speaker 3: you know, if you think about the alternate universe of A.J.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Preller not making trades, OK, like I can take you
- 1:49Speaker 3: way back to even not trading away James Shields to
- 1:53Speaker 3: the Chicago White Sox to get Fernando Tatis. If he
- 1:56Speaker 3: didn't do this, this team would look completely different. You'd
- 1:59Speaker 3: probably have Mackenzie Gore. You'd have James Wood. You'd have C.J. Abrams.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But what has happened in the last three years, and
- 2:06Speaker 3: I saw it. I saw it when Juan Soto was
- 2:08Speaker 3: traded to the Padres. I was there for that the
- 2:10Speaker 3: very first game. What it created was an atmosphere that
- 2:14Speaker 3: very few teams have. We have now seen through the
- 2:17Speaker 3: last couple years over 3 million fans through the gates
- 2:19Speaker 3: of Petco. That place is a party. And San Diego
- 2:23Speaker 3: has a couple things going for them in that market.
- 2:26Speaker 3: And when I start thinking about Peter Seidler, and if
- 2:29Speaker 3: you ever met this guy, Peter Seidler, the late Peter Seidler,
- 2:33Speaker 3: was hell-bent on bringing a world championship to San Diego.
- 2:38Speaker 3: He used to burn sage at home plate. This guy
- 2:40Speaker 3: was awesome, but he was also a great marketer. He
- 2:44Speaker 3: understood that in San Diego, without the Chargers and no Clippers,
- 2:49Speaker 3: no NBA team, no NFL team, that your market was
- 2:54Speaker 3: really Major League Baseball. And because of that, this team
- 2:58Speaker 3: has turned into such a home field advantage to play
- 3:01Speaker 3: in San Diego that you can see it. And certainly
- 3:05Speaker 3: the Chicago Cubs felt it. The Chicago Cubs were as
- 3:07Speaker 3: good as any team at Wrigley Field, especially late. They set,
- 3:11Speaker 3: I think, a Cubs record this year for most walk-offs.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But they didn't get that opportunity being in San Diego.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And as you're watching this Padres team, and I saw
- 3:20Speaker 3: them down the stretch. I saw them in September when
- 3:23Speaker 3: they were starting to rake again. I said it numerous
- 3:26Speaker 3: times on Sirius XM. I said it on the Rockies broadcast.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man, these guys are a wagon.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Because now, if you look at all their numbers, you
- 3:35Speaker 3: already knew that they had one of the best shutdown
- 3:37Speaker 3: bullpens in baseball. They were thinking about, at the time,
- 3:40Speaker 3: during trade deadline, maybe moving on from Adrian Morione, who's
- 3:44Speaker 3: going to be a free agent after this year. They
- 3:46Speaker 3: decided not to. Instead, AJ Preller makes a trade for
- 3:49Speaker 3: two starters. He gets Robbie Ray. And then he gets
- 3:52Speaker 3: Casey Mize, which ended up helping out the bullpen in
- 3:56Speaker 3: a way that very few people can describe. And I'll
- 3:58Speaker 3: describe it for you. It allowed now for their bullpen
- 4:02Speaker 3: to be fresher. And what we've seen, once their team
- 4:06Speaker 3: started to hit, and the big key here, there's a couple.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Jackson Merrill's starting to hit like Jackson Merrill. But if
- 4:13Speaker 3: you think about this year, what would the Padres look
- 4:16Speaker 3: like without Ty France? Has anybody thought about that? This
- 4:19Speaker 3: was a February minor league deal. Ty France had a
- 4:23Speaker 3: career year. He made first base like he's a gold glove,
- 4:27Speaker 3: platinum glove defender. And so the Padres defensively are an
- 4:31Speaker 3: elite defensive group. The metrics bear it out. They are
- 4:36Speaker 3: top three in Major League Baseball. Outs above average, defensive
- 4:39Speaker 3: runs saved, defensive efficiency. So when you have great defense
- 4:44Speaker 3: with a shutdown bullpen, With starters that can give you
- 4:47Speaker 3: just enough, and then now you have a team that's
- 4:51Speaker 3: starting to rake with a longer lineup, that's what the
- 4:54Speaker 3: Cubs just faced. And the Cubs really, when you think
- 4:57Speaker 3: about it, had no chance, especially with the start that
- 5:00Speaker 3: you got from Michael King on game one. So this
- 5:04Speaker 3: Padres team has everything capable of winning a World Series,
- 5:08Speaker 3: getting to the World Series, knocking out the Dodgers. Today's
- 5:11Speaker 3: just a wild day when I think about it, Scott,
- 5:14Speaker 3: because we lost two teams that easily could be in
- 5:17Speaker 3: the World Series, which is the Chicago Cubs and the
- 5:20Speaker 3: Boston Red Sox. Today was a wild day.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and for the Cubs, they're going to have to
- 5:25Speaker 2: do a lot of thinking here, Spilly. First of all,
- 5:27Speaker 2: if you want to be in a better position, you
- 5:29Speaker 2: need to win your division and even more so try
- 5:32Speaker 2: and get yourself a buy, right? The Brewers just own
- 5:35Speaker 2: them in the division lately. Also, you need to not
- 5:37Speaker 2: fade down the stretch so these games can be at home.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Home field advantage doesn't always matter, but in this series
- 5:42Speaker 2: it mattered a ton. I think that was obvious to anyone.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And it's not even just the atmosphere. It's the way
- 5:47Speaker 2: that the team actually plays on the field differently. The
- 5:49Speaker 2: atmosphere in Philly is wild too, but sometimes they don't
- 5:51Speaker 2: play as well at home. The Padres completely shined at home.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And you could see it from the regular season record
- 5:58Speaker 2: for the Cubs. They had the best offense in baseball.
- 6:01Speaker 2: this year, if you're going by runs, right? Front to back.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And I know the Padres really poured it on in
- 6:05Speaker 2: the second half of the season. But for Chicago, front
- 6:08Speaker 2: of the season to the back, that was the one
- 6:09Speaker 2: thing you pretty much had all year was the Cubs
- 6:11Speaker 2: knew how to score runs, right? It was not many
- 6:14Speaker 2: games where you would see something happen and be a
- 6:20Speaker 2: poor performance on the offensive side for this team. Part
- 6:23Speaker 2: of that had to do with Pete Carr Armstrong, Alex
- 6:26Speaker 2: Bregman coming on strong in the second half of the season.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So let's start there. How did the Padres.
- 6:30Speaker 2: silence these two I know it's only two games but
- 6:32Speaker 2: 0 for 15 from PCA and Alex Bregman and overall
- 6:35Speaker 2: if you look at the Cubs I mean this was
- 6:37Speaker 2: a team that had pop during the season they had
- 6:39Speaker 2: one extra base hit I have down in this series
- 6:41Speaker 2: and that was the ninth inning double for Nico Horner
- 6:44Speaker 2: off of Mason Miller in a three-run game that's it
- 6:47Speaker 2: so as much as the Padres put together a nice
- 6:50Speaker 2: performance you know in a lot of ways on offense
- 6:52Speaker 2: and and the defense is clean like you mentioned I
- 6:54Speaker 2: mean the pitching staff with the two starters and then
- 6:58Speaker 2: going early in the hook with Pavetta getting out of
- 7:00Speaker 2: there in the fourth inning, going right to Brad, Brad
- 7:02Speaker 2: clay Rodriguez, and then moving through all of your big
- 7:04Speaker 2: boys to Miller at the finish line shows you exactly
- 7:07Speaker 2: what you're going to get with the Padres. This is
- 7:09Speaker 2: a good brand of wild card series baseball.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it's sustainable in the division series too.
- 7:16Speaker 3: So I'm not worried about where the Padres were. I
- 7:18Speaker 3: think it started with Michael King. Michael King getting the
- 7:21Speaker 3: punch out of Pete Crow Armstrong and then kind of
- 7:24Speaker 3: setting the tone. We also saw about a two-mile-an-hour increase
- 7:26Speaker 3: for Michael King, which this guy can pitch. I mean,
- 7:30Speaker 3: there's a reason why the Padres brought him back. This
- 7:33Speaker 3: guy can absolutely pitch. What's strange is last year, I
- 7:37Speaker 3: remember when Michael King was on the shelf, he was
- 7:40Speaker 3: dealing with a shoulder injury that nobody in baseball had
- 7:42Speaker 3: ever suffered before. Nobody knew what to do. It was
- 7:46Speaker 3: a one of one. So Michael King was dealing with some,
- 7:49Speaker 3: because he's a big time crossfire, really creates a lot
- 7:53Speaker 3: of movement. And so he just had a strange injury.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And you weren't quite sure what you were going to
- 7:59Speaker 3: get when you got him this season. And what we
- 8:01Speaker 3: saw in game one was high velocity, high movement, unbelievable sweeper,
- 8:07Speaker 3: and the Cubs had no answer for it. And beyond that,
- 8:10Speaker 3: when I think postmortem for the Cubs, Craig Council was
- 8:14Speaker 3: brought in on the biggest contract we've ever seen a
- 8:18Speaker 3: manager get, which is great for managers because he kind
- 8:20Speaker 3: of set the market. Dave Roberts is happy with Craig Council,
- 8:23Speaker 3: and so is everybody else. But what Craig was dealing
- 8:26Speaker 3: with was a bullpen that was bad all year, especially
- 8:29Speaker 3: the second half of the season. It was a bad bullpen.
- 8:31Speaker 3: They tried to address it. I like the moves that
- 8:35Speaker 3: the Cubs made. I think Jed Hoyer, getting a Ryan
- 8:38Speaker 3: Zephyrjian and then getting a Clay Holmes and even a
- 8:41Speaker 3: David Peterson was important for them. But they lacked swing
- 8:45Speaker 3: and miss. So the swing and miss was a problem
- 8:48Speaker 3: for them. And even with Matthew Boyd, who down the stretch,
- 8:52Speaker 3: I think he went six out of seven games. He
- 8:54Speaker 3: was going at least five innings at least. Didn't have
- 8:57Speaker 3: a ton of swing and miss. And with a team
- 8:59Speaker 3: like the Padres were at this time right now, they're,
- 9:02Speaker 3: they're actually hitting homers. Fernando's hitting homers. Machado looks great.
- 9:06Speaker 3: We saw a homer from Xander Bogarts in game one.
- 9:10Speaker 3: The Cubs were overmatched. I think that's what it boils
- 9:12Speaker 3: down to. It felt like for me, as I was
- 9:16Speaker 3: watching the Padres getting, you know, ramped up for the
- 9:18Speaker 3: end of the season, they were the best team in
- 9:20Speaker 3: baseball and they were playing like it. And then they
- 9:23Speaker 3: got the home field advantage. And, and to be honest,
- 9:25Speaker 3: like if the Cubs were, If the Cubs maybe face
- 9:29Speaker 3: the Phillies, the Cubs are moving on. If the Cubs
- 9:33Speaker 3: took on the Atlanta Braves right now, maybe the Cubs
- 9:36Speaker 3: are moving on from the Braves, but they've matched up
- 9:39Speaker 3: against the wrong team. Right now, and you know this,
- 9:42Speaker 3: we've seen this for how many years, Scotty, we've been
- 9:44Speaker 3: doing this thing for? When a team gets hot going
- 9:48Speaker 3: into the postseason and they're playing well, it doesn't matter
- 9:51Speaker 3: what your regular season record was or how many runs
- 9:54Speaker 3: you scored during the regular season or the names that
- 9:57Speaker 3: you have on your roster. You just run into a
- 10:00Speaker 3: hot team. And what you have right now is the
- 10:03Speaker 3: Padres with a ton of talent, a poop ton of talent,
- 10:07Speaker 3: who are playing their very best brand of baseball with
- 10:11Speaker 3: their best squad. They got their guys back. They literally
- 10:15Speaker 3: got their guys back. We saw Joe Musgrove come out.
- 10:17Speaker 3: He hadn't pitched in two years. He's throwing 96. So
- 10:21Speaker 3: Padres are an absolute wagon right now.
- 10:25Speaker 2: My thing too is the way that Tatis got the
- 10:28Speaker 2: crowd involved right from the jump in the first inning
- 10:31Speaker 2: of game one and then Machado adding on with the
- 10:33Speaker 2: home run. You know what was a unique fire starter, firecracker,
- 10:38Speaker 2: sparker in this game too? P. Crow Armstrong burns one
- 10:43Speaker 2: of two challenges in his first at-bat Fans are smart.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Fans love the new ABS challenge system. We've seen that
- 10:50Speaker 2: all year, right? It's fun to get on the umps.
- 10:51Speaker 2: It's even fun if the ump is correct in this
- 10:54Speaker 2: case because you now get to give crap to the
- 10:59Speaker 2: MVP of the National League for burning something very important.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And yes, they had one remaining. You have to be
- 11:05Speaker 2: so much more careful the rest of the game. Fans
- 11:07Speaker 2: know that. So when you blow that so early on, right,
- 11:10Speaker 2: you're the first batter of the freaking game.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And they had no leverage.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yep.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And if you're PCA, you don't want to give up
- 11:17Speaker 2: your AB, right? So if you really believe that that
- 11:20Speaker 2: was out of the zone, what was it? The curve
- 11:21Speaker 2: ball that, that Nick, the inside corner, then if you're
- 11:25Speaker 2: the Cubs, cool. I want that at bat to extend.
- 11:28Speaker 2: That's the best player in the national league this year.
- 11:30Speaker 1: But it wasn't the case. He landed it.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So the crowd goes nuts. And I just felt like
- 11:36Speaker 2: right from there, I'm like, Oh, they're screwed. They're screwed.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Like it is such a, it's crazy. It's, I don't
- 11:42Speaker 2: want to call it a momentum swing, but it's such
- 11:44Speaker 2: a start to the game to fire up the crowd.
- 11:46Speaker 2: And I felt like from then on out, the Cubs
- 11:49Speaker 2: are going to be just playing defense the rest of
- 11:51Speaker 2: this game.
- 11:52Speaker 1: And that's what it felt like.
- 11:53Speaker 2: You're just waiting for the big Padres moment, which probably
- 11:56Speaker 2: you could point to, you know, Gavin sheets providing the
- 11:59Speaker 2: insurance there with the two run Homer as the moment
- 12:01Speaker 2: where you're like, all right, see a bullpen.
- 12:03Speaker 1: You got a little room to breathe now too. Good night.
- 12:06Speaker 1: We have a new Gavin Sheets shirt that just came out, too.
- 12:08Speaker 2: A little holy sheets on FoulTerritoryShop.com. But thoughts on Sheets?
- 12:12Speaker 2: Because you mentioned Ty France in the beginning of the season.
- 12:15Speaker 2: The unlikely names for the Padres were the guys that
- 12:19Speaker 2: were leading the charge in the beginning of the year
- 12:20Speaker 2: when Tatis couldn't find his home run swing. Machado was
- 12:23Speaker 2: off to a slow start. Jackson Merrill didn't look like
- 12:25Speaker 2: himself in the first half of the season. So it's
- 12:27Speaker 2: almost like those guys kept them afloat in the first
- 12:29Speaker 2: half of the year so that the superstars could eventually win.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Do their thing.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Oh, that's nice. Yeah. I want this. I want this shirt.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I want a holy sheets. And I also love how
- 12:38Speaker 3: this thing came about. This was, this came from the
- 12:40Speaker 3: Spanish broadcasters last year and, and Gavin sheets, which is
- 12:44Speaker 3: like a great story. It's kind of like Andrew Vaughn.
- 12:46Speaker 3: He had two guys that left the Chicago white socks.
- 12:49Speaker 3: You get out of that hell hole from the last
- 12:51Speaker 3: couple of years and, And they found like an opportunity
- 12:54Speaker 3: like San Diego last year with Gavin sheets, they rehabbed
- 12:57Speaker 3: his swing and he took off and that he had
- 13:01Speaker 3: a home run where it was Spanish broadcasting started screaming,
- 13:04Speaker 3: holy sheets. And it was so good in the crowd,
- 13:07Speaker 3: of course, because like I mentioned with San Diego fans,
- 13:10Speaker 3: like the Padre fans, there's nothing else to root for.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I mean, obviously you've got, you do have women's soccer.
- 13:17Speaker 3: You do have college sports, but it is San Diego
- 13:21Speaker 3: Padres baseball. If you go to San Diego and you're
- 13:24Speaker 3: basically from like Coronado all the way up to like
- 13:28Speaker 3: Newport Beach and you'd like leak into basically Dodger country,
- 13:33Speaker 3: there's Padres fans and they are filling the stands and
- 13:36Speaker 3: they are very attentive. They understand it. So I love
- 13:39Speaker 3: your point about the ABS because they're, they're a hundred
- 13:41Speaker 3: percent right. You can't lose a challenge early on. And
- 13:44Speaker 3: the thing is, too, when you have a team on
- 13:47Speaker 3: a roll and they're feeling the energy of the crowd.
- 13:51Speaker 3: We felt this in 2007 when I was on the Rockies.
- 13:53Speaker 3: We had like Rockies fans were going crazy because we won,
- 13:57Speaker 3: you know, basically 21 out of 22 games. And there
- 14:00Speaker 3: was a stretch where we won 13 out of 14.
- 14:03Speaker 3: We felt the fans and we knew if we could
- 14:05Speaker 3: feel the fans for us in a positive way. the
- 14:08Speaker 3: opposition felt it in a negative way. And Craig Council
- 14:11Speaker 3: addressed it. You could kind of see it. There's times
- 14:14Speaker 3: where you're playing and you just feel like, God, I
- 14:17Speaker 3: feel like I'm playing 10 players right now. It's not fair.
- 14:22Speaker 3: And so, yeah, man, I think what I'm looking forward
- 14:25Speaker 3: to now is the San Diego Padres Dodgers series because
- 14:30Speaker 3: this is the best the Padres have been playing. And
- 14:33Speaker 3: if you go back and you think two years ago
- 14:35Speaker 3: when the Dodgers ended up winning the World Series in 2024,
- 14:38Speaker 3: The Padres had a home field advantage and they were
- 14:42Speaker 3: up three games to one and they ended up losing
- 14:44Speaker 3: that series or was it two to one? So they
- 14:46Speaker 3: had to win one more. So it was a five.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Hold up, dude.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You're getting you're getting in front of yourself. They got
- 14:51Speaker 2: to get through the top record in baseball.
- 14:53Speaker 1: First on the.
- 14:53Speaker 3: They got to get through the Brewers. That's right.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So hold your horses.
- 14:57Speaker 2: And we're going to get to Philly's Braves in a moment.
- 14:59Speaker 2: But here's my thing, because it'll play to your point.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And yes, Dodgers, Padres, NLCS would be insane, as we've
- 15:07Speaker 2: seen in the past. But NLDS, if I'm Milwaukee, I'm
- 15:12Speaker 2: looking at that series just now going, damn, I wish
- 15:16Speaker 2: we would have dropped the Phillies bullpen or the Braves
- 15:19Speaker 2: starting pitching. The Padres look like a much more complete
- 15:22Speaker 2: team right now. It's about right now, like you mentioned.
- 15:24Speaker 2: The team that I don't want to face, if I'm Milwaukee,
- 15:28Speaker 2: out of the three teams, the Braves, the Phillies, or
- 15:31Speaker 2: the Padres is San Diego. I don't even think it's
- 15:33Speaker 2: a question based on what we've seen.
- 15:35Speaker 3: It's not a question. No, it's not a question. And
- 15:37Speaker 3: you go back to, and even though I say throw
- 15:39Speaker 3: out the regular season, it's not about throwing out the
- 15:42Speaker 3: regular season. It's about throwing out the confidence. You can't
- 15:44Speaker 3: throw out the confidence. This team literally thinks they can
- 15:47Speaker 3: beat anybody. And I don't think any team can beat
- 15:50Speaker 3: them right now. Like that. I think that's a fact.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I don't think I'm speaking out of school here. They
- 15:56Speaker 3: are playing better defense than virtually any team. Their bullpen,
- 16:00Speaker 3: once you get to the fifth or sixth inning, it's over.
- 16:02Speaker 3: You're playing 15 outs. Scott, you're playing a 15-out game.
- 16:07Speaker 3: We used to talk about playing a 25-out game or
- 16:11Speaker 3: a 22-out game. Now we're talking about if you get
- 16:15Speaker 3: into fifth inning, that's 15 outs, and then they're going
- 16:18Speaker 3: to their bullpen. It's over. You're done. You're cooked.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Hey, the Brewers had a better overall regular season. The
- 16:23Speaker 2: Padres had just as good of a second half as Milwaukee.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know the exact records, but close enough.
- 16:28Speaker 2: If you eye test it and you watch games every
- 16:30Speaker 2: night like we do, Padres look just as good, if
- 16:32Speaker 2: not better, than Milwaukee's second half. So point is, that
- 16:34Speaker 2: series is going to be ridiculous. And then we're going
- 16:37Speaker 2: to get to the other side of the National League
- 16:39Speaker 2: bracket here. So full count is fueled by Marathon, where
- 16:44Speaker 2: fun runs on full. Save up to $ 1 a gallon
- 16:46Speaker 2: with Marathon Rewards. And also a reminder here, as we're
- 16:51Speaker 2: going to transition to the other series, you get that
- 16:55Speaker 2: little sound playing in your head if you press subscribe
- 16:58Speaker 2: to Foul Territory, the YouTube channel, almost at 300,000 subscribers.
- 17:02Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the other series.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It's presented by Fox One and the Fox One app,
- 17:06Speaker 2: which will eventually have the NLDS.
- 17:08Speaker 1: We'll get to that later.
- 17:10Speaker 2: But first, in the NL wildcard matchup here, the Phillies
- 17:12Speaker 2: force a game three with Atlanta. And that was a
- 17:15Speaker 2: great game.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Great game. Full of flubs.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Redemption uh unlikely heroes where do you want to start
- 17:23Speaker 2: here we've got let's get to boom later because he's
- 17:26Speaker 2: going to get a little special reward but let's start
- 17:28Speaker 2: with harper right i mean this is the one of
- 17:30Speaker 2: the faces of the sport for a long time and
- 17:33Speaker 2: he misses a fly ball that you know what had
- 17:35Speaker 2: me thinking about if the phillies end up getting bounced
- 17:38Speaker 2: in this series i know it was a bigger stage
- 17:39Speaker 2: back then but remember when judge dropped the fly ball
- 17:42Speaker 2: a couple years ago in the world series.
- 17:43Speaker 3: In centerfield yeah i was there for that.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Here Former big league outfielder right here. Like, tell me
- 17:49Speaker 2: what happened. And do you feel your heart drop when
- 17:52Speaker 2: you watch that?
- 17:54Speaker 3: So I'll go back to Aaron judges one for a second.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Like that one had a little bit of English on it.
- 18:00Speaker 3: It was knuckling on him. He took his eyes off it.
- 18:02Speaker 3: So like, I kind of, I felt like that, like
- 18:04Speaker 3: I felt for him because that's happened to me before
- 18:08Speaker 3: the play in right field for, for Bryce Harper. I'll
- 18:10Speaker 3: break this one down for you. Pretty easy. So Bryce,
- 18:13Speaker 3: When it comes to an outfielder, and you've got to remember,
- 18:16Speaker 3: Bryce Harper was a right fielder. Then he had the
- 18:19Speaker 3: internal brace surgery, so then he came to first base.
- 18:22Speaker 3: And then once Don Mattingly got the trade for Luis Rize,
- 18:25Speaker 3: he moved Rize to second, Stott to third. He moved
- 18:29Speaker 3: Boehm over to first, which is a much bigger shaped body,
- 18:32Speaker 3: so a much better first baseman than Bryce Harper, even
- 18:34Speaker 3: though Bryce Harper made himself a pretty good first baseman.
- 18:37Speaker 3: So now you've got Bryce Harper back in the outfield.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And so an outfielder relies on three things, three things.
- 18:43Speaker 3: So number one is we're looking for ball in zone.
- 18:46Speaker 3: And so once we're looking in ball in zone, we're
- 18:48Speaker 3: looking for the swing. So you got a left-handed hitter
- 18:50Speaker 3: in Drake Baldwin. And it's hard to pick up the
- 18:54Speaker 3: ball whenever you have an opposite hand hitter. So if
- 18:57Speaker 3: there's a left-handed hitter and I'm in right field, it's
- 18:59Speaker 3: hard to see in the zone. So it's a little
- 19:01Speaker 3: hard to see the ball off the bat. Number two
- 19:02Speaker 3: is you're listening to the sound. So I could tell
- 19:05Speaker 3: by the sound of the bat, like if it's good,
- 19:07Speaker 3: like pop. I know that that ball is hit well.
- 19:10Speaker 3: If I hear like a, I know it's off the
- 19:12Speaker 3: end of the bat so I can come in. So
- 19:14Speaker 3: we really rely on our audible. And then the other
- 19:17Speaker 3: part is our movement. So we, you know, when a
- 19:19Speaker 3: right-handed hitter is, or a left-handed hitter is hitting and
- 19:23Speaker 3: I'm in left field or right field, I'm going to
- 19:25Speaker 3: move towards the line. So wherever, whichever direction the line is,
- 19:28Speaker 3: that's where the glove side is going to be. The
- 19:30Speaker 3: problem that you have on this play specifically is it hit,
- 19:33Speaker 3: it's hit right at them. So number one, I hate
- 19:36Speaker 3: to be honest, like, I can't stand these games starting
- 19:39Speaker 3: at two o'clock because shadows do become a problem. So
- 19:44Speaker 3: shadows are a problem. If you go back and you
- 19:46Speaker 3: watch it, like he's somewhat in the shadows. It's a
- 19:48Speaker 3: little bit harder to see at that twilight time. You
- 19:50Speaker 3: don't hear the ball off the bat because the crowd
- 19:52Speaker 3: is loud. So those first two things I mentioned, as
- 19:56Speaker 3: far as like being an outfielder and hearing the and
- 19:58Speaker 3: seeing what you need to see to make a decision,
- 20:01Speaker 3: those are gone. He didn't have those. And then the
- 20:04Speaker 3: second he goes back and it was hit a little
- 20:06Speaker 3: bit harder than he thought over his head, yeah, he
- 20:09Speaker 3: wanted to crawl into a hole. And what was really cool, Scott,
- 20:14Speaker 3: hearing him talk about it post-game, about how he was
- 20:17Speaker 3: able to just kind of let that thing go because
- 20:19Speaker 3: he's played in so many big games since he was
- 20:21Speaker 3: 10 years old, and he didn't really feel the pressure.
- 20:23Speaker 3: He was like, man, I knew the next thing I
- 20:26Speaker 3: had to do is take a quality at bat. which
- 20:28Speaker 3: he did in the eighth inning when him and Schwarber
- 20:30Speaker 3: went back-to-back. That play happens. There's a reason why it
- 20:35Speaker 3: says runs, hits, errors. Errors happen. They happen all the time.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Sometimes it's variables of what's going on in the game environment.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I don't blame him for missing this one. It was
- 20:46Speaker 3: pretty much a catch he should have made 99 out
- 20:49Speaker 3: of 100 times, but in those specific instances, I presented
- 20:53Speaker 3: to you why it's possible that he missed it. Overall,
- 20:58Speaker 3: This was a great series. It was a great series.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I just think it's crazy. And maybe you agree or disagree.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I can't stand thinking that we have to have our
- 21:08Speaker 3: network television. And I get it. They pay the big bucks.
- 21:11Speaker 3: But why do you have to have a window when
- 21:13Speaker 3: these teams don't play during this time frame? These should
- 21:15Speaker 3: be 6 o'clock starts.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Well, I could debate that with you all day. I
- 21:21Speaker 1: know people are pissed, but you can't have all the
- 21:23Speaker 1: games on at the same time. It's just what pays
- 21:25Speaker 1: the bills.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Now you could say, Hey, they should play a little
- 21:27Speaker 2: bit later. Well, that's, that's 60 billion teams. This is
- 21:33Speaker 2: a little bit smaller. I get what you're saying. And
- 21:35Speaker 2: I can have that debate with you all day. I'm
- 21:38Speaker 2: just saying like the variables are having inside. I understand
- 21:42Speaker 2: the business side as well as you do.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I'm just saying like from a, If an organization is
- 21:47Speaker 3: playing games where there's going to be shadows and a
- 21:50Speaker 3: chance to impact the game, that knocks out one of
- 21:54Speaker 3: these postseason teams very well. Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies
- 21:58Speaker 3: built their teams to win a World Series. that they
- 22:00Speaker 3: could be knocked out because of the variables of starting
- 22:03Speaker 3: a game because you're worried about network television. That's all
- 22:05Speaker 3: I'm saying. Like that's crazy. I understand.
- 22:07Speaker 2: But, but they also, they're both dealing with it. And
- 22:09Speaker 2: also now they're going to have a game three for
- 22:11Speaker 2: all the marbles and that's going to be at night.
- 22:13Speaker 3: At what time?
- 22:13Speaker 2: All the scenarios thrown out. That one is at, I
- 22:16Speaker 2: believe 8 PM Eastern. Someone behind the scenes that's watching
- 22:19Speaker 2: right now can check me on that one, but it's
- 22:20Speaker 2: the only game three that we've got going on.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So now you'll have that lined up. Here's the problem though. Okay.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So first off, both teams have interesting bullpen storylines. The
- 22:31Speaker 2: brave bullpen this season has been much better than Philly's bullpen.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Philly's bullpen was like, who the heck am I trusting
- 22:36Speaker 2: down the stretch? But this is where things get interesting
- 22:39Speaker 2: in the playoffs. All of a sudden in game two here,
- 22:42Speaker 2: first of all, in game one, it was, it was
- 22:43Speaker 2: Philly's bullpen. And that's been a problem right in the
- 22:46Speaker 2: past few post seasons for them. And then you're looking,
- 22:48Speaker 2: you're like, Oh, see brave bullpen world's better than Philly's bullpen.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Now fast forward game two, all of a sudden, Oh,
- 22:54Speaker 2: here comes Andrew Painter with the good stuff. He was
- 22:56Speaker 2: demoted earlier this year, came back much better, and he's
- 23:00Speaker 2: shoving for multiple innings. He claims he can pitch in
- 23:02Speaker 2: game three too, right? So you've got that side of
- 23:05Speaker 2: the equation. Other side of the equation, Brace fans are pissed.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They were talking about this on Hammer Territory.
- 23:10Speaker 1: They're using the same three guys back-to-back days. That's fine.
- 23:13Speaker 2: That does put you in a little bit of an
- 23:14Speaker 2: interesting spot. Do those guys have their best stuff in
- 23:16Speaker 2: game three? And Dylan Lee had a poor second half,
- 23:20Speaker 2: has reverse splits, and he's the guy that gives up
- 23:22Speaker 2: both home runs in this one.
- 23:23Speaker 1: So.
- 23:24Speaker 2: You start to get the question marks from Braves country,
- 23:27Speaker 2: and they're used to a lot of winning. So any
- 23:29Speaker 2: criticism there with how things were deployed and how it's
- 23:32Speaker 2: going to line up for game three?
- 23:34Speaker 1: Was Lee the guy there?
- 23:35Speaker 2: And then how do you do this in game three
- 23:37Speaker 2: when you've used Fuentes and Lee and Iglesias in both games?
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yeah, so... Okay, so go back to Network TV. I'm
- 23:46Speaker 3: going to let this one go. I really like this broadcast.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I like all the broadcaster in this wild card because
- 23:51Speaker 3: you have an analyst from both teams. So CJ Nikowski
- 23:54Speaker 3: and you have John Kruk along with Matt Vaskirjian. And
- 23:57Speaker 3: I love how we've had like Steve Stone and then
- 24:00Speaker 3: it was Jeff Blum with the White Sox. So I
- 24:02Speaker 3: love that you have both analysts that have been watching
- 24:05Speaker 3: these teams year round. And what CJ said during this
- 24:09Speaker 3: time frame with Dylan Lee was, hold on a second,
- 24:12Speaker 3: Phillies have had Dylan Lee's number. So he openly questioned
- 24:16Speaker 3: on air during that move. So it's not just fans
- 24:20Speaker 3: going like, hey, what the heck? You're talking about the
- 24:22Speaker 3: Atlanta Braves color analysts that watched every single game of
- 24:26Speaker 3: the Braves going like, this is a little spot right
- 24:30Speaker 3: here where Dylan, as good as he is, I mean,
- 24:32Speaker 3: like he's unbelievable. He's got a great curveball. huge vert,
- 24:36Speaker 3: got a great slider too. Um, but for whatever reason,
- 24:40Speaker 3: like the Phillies have his number, they, they have like it,
- 24:43Speaker 3: they have good stats on them over the course of
- 24:45Speaker 3: the season. He had an outing where I don't even
- 24:47Speaker 3: think he was able to record enough out to get
- 24:50Speaker 3: out of the inning. So I think it's fair to
- 24:52Speaker 3: second guess Walt right here. Um, I also think when it,
- 24:55Speaker 3: when you look at Walt Weiss, cause at the end
- 24:57Speaker 3: of this year, he's going to get votes for national
- 25:00Speaker 3: league manager of the year. And part of the reason
- 25:03Speaker 3: why is he dealt with as many injuries, significant injuries
- 25:06Speaker 3: as any team in baseball. And the biggest thing he
- 25:10Speaker 3: did in his first year was really manage the bullpen.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And he did a fantastic job. Now that one of
- 25:15Speaker 3: the huge reasons why he was able to do such
- 25:17Speaker 3: a good job, especially early on was he had Robert Suarez.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Robert Suarez is like an unbelievable wild card to have.
- 25:25Speaker 3: He was his high leverage guy. I don't think Suarez
- 25:28Speaker 3: was a hundred percent feeling great. So it's fair to
- 25:32Speaker 3: second guess right here why Dylan Lee was there, but
- 25:34Speaker 3: that's also one of his best relievers year-round, except that
- 25:37Speaker 3: the Phillies have had his number. So I didn't mind this.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I didn't mind it, but I also, you know, it's
- 25:43Speaker 3: easy after the fact to second guess. It's just how
- 25:45Speaker 3: it works. But at the end of the day, like, Phillies,
- 25:49Speaker 3: the at-bats they put, you know, with the back-to-back homers
- 25:54Speaker 3: and then Alec Boehm later on, I know we're going
- 25:56Speaker 3: to get to him, these are just great at-bats. Great
- 25:59Speaker 3: at bat. So like you can't just find an excuse
- 26:01Speaker 3: every single time your team doesn't win. Sometimes the other
- 26:05Speaker 3: team has really good big leaguers and they actually execute it.
- 26:09Speaker 3: So like we can we can go this time and
- 26:12Speaker 3: time again. If Dylan Lee would have got the outs,
- 26:13Speaker 3: he'd be like, what a great move. He doesn't get
- 26:16Speaker 3: the outs. Now that's a terrible move. So it's whatever
- 26:19Speaker 3: you want. It's depending on what fan base you are
- 26:22Speaker 3: cheering for.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and we're doing this right now at 1.33 a.m.
- 26:27Speaker 2: East Coast time, right? Where the Phillies and Braves are
- 26:31Speaker 2: hopefully sleeping and getting ready for their Game 3 matchup
- 26:34Speaker 2: on Thursday night. As of now, we had not seen
- 26:38Speaker 2: what the starting pitching matchup is going to be, but
- 26:41Speaker 2: I can tell you this.
- 26:42Speaker 1: If you're a Braves fan.
- 26:44Speaker 3: You're nervous.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Zach Wheeler on short rest.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Nola is going to be available on regular rest to
- 26:50Speaker 2: be a part of this, right? And Duran should be
- 26:54Speaker 2: involved here as well. Painter really saved the bullpen here.
- 26:57Speaker 2: And if the Phillies do advance, they're going to have
- 26:59Speaker 2: to get very crafty with how they do things going
- 27:01Speaker 2: forward because the circle of trust in their bullpen is
- 27:04Speaker 2: not high right now. But Zach Wheeler on short rest,
- 27:08Speaker 2: getting late in his career, but still looking like he's
- 27:10Speaker 2: in his prime. That's a scary, scary task for, again,
- 27:14Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about a Braves fan base that
- 27:16Speaker 2: has been kicking and screaming and yelling for more starting pitching.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Now I know you can't predict the, strider and swallenbach
- 27:23Speaker 2: and and a number of other youngsters going down right
- 27:26Speaker 2: all in the same year but in the offseason they
- 27:28Speaker 2: kind of promised they were going to get someone they
- 27:29Speaker 2: didn't really come through then at the trade deadline tyler
- 27:32Speaker 2: malley has been everything and more he's been one of
- 27:34Speaker 2: the best pickups at the trade deadline but most braves
- 27:36Speaker 2: fans and just even me i would say i was
- 27:39Speaker 2: expecting two here spilly and they got one well guess
- 27:43Speaker 2: what now we're in a game three and brave fans
- 27:45Speaker 2: are like so.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Yeah yeah strap it on by the way you're Did you,
- 27:50Speaker 3: so did you hear the story today, Scott, when it
- 27:52Speaker 3: came to Tyler Mallee, he was in the bullpen and
- 27:54Speaker 3: felt like a tweak in his oblique, uh, and still
- 27:57Speaker 3: went out and they were actually considering not even letting
- 27:59Speaker 3: him pitch today. Uh, and he goes out and he
- 28:02Speaker 3: shoves for what? Seven innings. That's a dude that, and
- 28:06Speaker 3: by the.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Way, by the way, bad news, they would have had
- 28:09Speaker 1: another bullpen game.
- 28:11Speaker 3: They would have been, it would have been a disaster. Uh,
- 28:14Speaker 3: and by the way, Tyler Mallee, when I started thinking about,
- 28:16Speaker 3: you know, the acquisitions during, uh, trade deadline, Tyler Malley
- 28:21Speaker 3: was probably the best one. His numbers are actually better
- 28:24Speaker 3: than Tarek Scooble's. So it's like, you know, you think
- 28:28Speaker 3: about what the Braves did and Alex Anthopoulos, and maybe
- 28:31Speaker 3: he's shrewd. Maybe he didn't go out and get enough
- 28:33Speaker 3: starters like he wanted, but his moves have always been,
- 28:36Speaker 3: I mean, come on. The Braves are the Braves, and
- 28:41Speaker 3: Alex Anthopoulos makes moves that make sense. Yeah, seven innings,
- 28:45Speaker 3: one run, six punch-outs, and he had a little tweak
- 28:48Speaker 3: in his in his body before the start. He almost
- 28:52Speaker 3: didn't make the start. He gutted it. That's what gutting
- 28:55Speaker 3: a start looks like in the postseason. That's awesome. We
- 28:58Speaker 3: need to make a Tyler Malley shirt.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 29:02Speaker 2: And they nailed it on that one, right? Because when
- 29:04Speaker 2: they acquired Malley, you're like, cool, that's the back-end starter.
- 29:07Speaker 2: What's the front-end starter? That was the front-end starter. And really,
- 29:10Speaker 2: then you just look and you're like, they still needed
- 29:12Speaker 2: another playoff arm, even if Malley is pitching like a two,
- 29:15Speaker 2: which is what he's doing in the second half. And
- 29:17Speaker 2: here in the postseason. So yeah, I'm a fan too.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I've been a fan for a long time of Anthopolis.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I think sometimes when a team sets such a high standard,
- 29:25Speaker 2: you get really critical and that's fair.
- 29:27Speaker 1: We're going to get to see this though in game three.
- 29:29Speaker 2: And maybe the bullpen for the Braves is strung together
- 29:33Speaker 2: here for a bullpen game. The problem is the Phillies
- 29:35Speaker 2: don't have to play that game. They don't have to
- 29:37Speaker 2: play a bullpen game. That's the one thing that they've
- 29:39Speaker 2: been able to create is Christopher Sanchez and Zach Wheeler,
- 29:43Speaker 2: in this case here, and Jesus Lizardo, right, who came
- 29:46Speaker 2: back and gave them enough. So I want to get.
- 29:50Speaker 1: To Boehm in a moment.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So first of all, MLB on Fox, streaming on Fox
- 29:57Speaker 2: One and Fox One app. You can check out the NLDS.

- 30:20Speaker 2: this game three beyond what we just did for the
- 30:22Speaker 2: last 10, 12 minutes. And so there's Philly's. hammer on
- 30:26Speaker 2: the other side they've actually been doing two shows a
- 30:28Speaker 2: day they do post game and then they also do
- 30:30Speaker 2: a preview so the post game came out literally right
- 30:33Speaker 2: after um that game too and then they've got the
- 30:36Speaker 2: preview as well um okay i want to get to
- 30:38Speaker 2: the player of the game here so let's do that
- 30:42Speaker 2: shall we all right mlb nine innings 26 helping us
- 30:47Speaker 2: with the player of the game and that is alec
- 30:50Speaker 2: boom alec boom dude has had a year a year
- 30:54Speaker 2: a lot of lows.
- 30:55Speaker 1: And off-field turbulence, you can read it. It's public.
- 31:00Speaker 2: There's good articles in The Athletic about Boehm going through
- 31:03Speaker 2: a lawsuit that eventually got settled outside of court with
- 31:07Speaker 2: his family and his parents specifically.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So you can read about that. I'm not going to
- 31:11Speaker 1: spend much time there right now, but it's real. It's
- 31:13Speaker 1: out there.
- 31:13Speaker 2: That's a distraction among the most that you can really
- 31:16Speaker 2: put against a player to have to deal with that
- 31:18Speaker 2: for your family. How about the distraction even within the
- 31:21Speaker 2: game here, Spilly? You talked about Harper making a mistake.
- 31:24Speaker 2: I mean, he had a tough... uh, ground ball that
- 31:27Speaker 2: didn't go his way.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 31:28Speaker 2: In terms of, uh, creating a little extra offense for Atlanta.
- 31:32Speaker 2: And eventually you can change all of that when you
- 31:36Speaker 2: focus on a quality AB. And that's what he was
- 31:38Speaker 2: able to do to put a home run into the
- 31:41Speaker 2: seats and help give the Phillies a little life.
- 31:44Speaker 3: He's a, he's an interesting story for me because there,
- 31:48Speaker 3: there's a couple of things. I've been from the outside
- 31:50Speaker 3: looking at Alec Boehm, Um, I mean, he's a world
- 31:53Speaker 3: of talent, right? He's, he's a six foot five, you know,
- 31:56Speaker 3: defender who's maybe not a great defensive third baseman. And I,
- 32:01Speaker 3: and I think like there's been times where people wanted
- 32:03Speaker 3: him to be more, uh, maybe like a Troy gloss type,
- 32:06Speaker 3: you know, hit 30 homers, but that's not him. Um,
- 32:09Speaker 3: and then once he moved to first and I, I
- 32:11Speaker 3: understand like, yeah, he had a defensive miscue, but he
- 32:13Speaker 3: also had an unbelievable double play. And he has found
- 32:17Speaker 3: a home at first base. It's also made the Phillies'
- 32:19Speaker 3: defense a lot better. This Phillies' defense was not elite,
- 32:22Speaker 3: especially with Trey Turner at short. And so having Stott
- 32:26Speaker 3: or this combination of Stott up the middle, because he's
- 32:28Speaker 3: an elite defender at second, and then having Sosa or
- 32:34Speaker 3: whoever they're going to put at third, usually it's Stott
- 32:36Speaker 3: if they had a rise. But having Boehm at first,
- 32:39Speaker 3: because he's such a large target, if you look at
- 32:41Speaker 3: some of the infield defensive metrics, they immediately improved. They
- 32:46Speaker 3: got a lot better and knowing, you know, boom, like again,
- 32:50Speaker 3: like watching him from afar, he was kind of one
- 32:52Speaker 3: of those snappers. So like Pete Crow Armstrong early in
- 32:55Speaker 3: his career as a snapper, he used to throw his
- 32:56Speaker 3: helmet a punch. Um, boom has gotten better and better
- 32:59Speaker 3: about that. I think he's handling his emotions and then
- 33:01Speaker 3: he made a small site, you know, swing adjustment, just
- 33:04Speaker 3: adjusted where his bat was. So it was a little
- 33:06Speaker 3: bit more flat, uh, got it in the zone a
- 33:08Speaker 3: little bit better. And then you started seeing some of
- 33:10Speaker 3: the power numbers because the first half was awful. Him
- 33:13Speaker 3: and Stott had an awful first half. And I can't
- 33:15Speaker 3: imagine playing baseball, dealing with a lawsuit with my parents.
- 33:21Speaker 3: There's things that players deal with. This is on a
- 33:24Speaker 3: whole new level that I can't imagine coming into the
- 33:26Speaker 3: field and feeling like I could compete with my perfect focus.
- 33:30Speaker 3: That's impossible. I don't think anybody could do that in
- 33:33Speaker 3: any line of work. let alone baseball, and you're trying
- 33:36Speaker 3: to hit a ball that's coming at you in less
- 33:38Speaker 3: than three-tenths of a second. So I give a lot
- 33:40Speaker 3: of props. I feel like I've seen Alec Boehm grow
- 33:44Speaker 3: up a lot this year. He's actually turned into a
- 33:47Speaker 3: player where, you know, if he comes up at the
- 33:49Speaker 3: plate at any time, I'm like, oh, he's going to
- 33:51Speaker 3: do something. And to see him get this home run, like,
- 33:55Speaker 3: it may not mean a lot in the grand scheme
- 33:57Speaker 3: of things, but to your point of, like, just thinking
- 34:00Speaker 3: about the entire season in totality, and what this guy's
- 34:04Speaker 3: gone through. Like, I felt like that was a nice
- 34:06Speaker 3: human moment. Like I celebrated that with him. I was like,
- 34:09Speaker 3: hell yeah, dude. Like I was cheering for him when
- 34:12Speaker 3: he was rounding the bases. I was like, that's gotta
- 34:14Speaker 3: feel so good to round the bases, you know, on
- 34:19Speaker 3: an elimination game and put the Phillies to one more,
- 34:22Speaker 3: especially given the fact that, you know, Phillies fans have been,
- 34:25Speaker 3: you know, on this rollercoaster with them. They love them.
- 34:27Speaker 3: They hate them. They hate them again. Then they love
- 34:29Speaker 3: them again. Um, it just, it's nice for even, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 3: I'm not a big Phillies fan. I'm not a big
- 34:36Speaker 3: outside of, you know, my normal sphere of influence or
- 34:39Speaker 3: my bubble of teams that I root for, but I
- 34:42Speaker 3: root for Alec Boehm. I found myself openly rooting for him.
- 34:45Speaker 3: I was like, hell yeah, dude, do it. Like, that's awesome.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Like that, that's you, you can, you can appreciate that.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Can't you? Like as any fan, even if you're not
- 34:54Speaker 3: a Phillies fan, like you can appreciate the human aspect
- 34:58Speaker 3: of it where you're like, good for him, right? Like,
- 35:01Speaker 3: even if you didn't like the guy, you're like, good
- 35:03Speaker 3: for that guy. He deserved that.
- 35:05Speaker 2: And what he did, so post-game, he said he was
- 35:08Speaker 2: trying to pull that ball, right? So there's two hits
- 35:11Speaker 2: for Boehm in this series with elevated fastballs. Chris Sale
- 35:15Speaker 2: does not give up hits on fastballs above the zone.
- 35:18Speaker 2: There was one other knock the entire year, a single
- 35:20Speaker 2: from Bobby Witt on opening day. And Boehm had that
- 35:23Speaker 2: in the first inning to get the Phillies on the board.
- 35:25Speaker 2: In a game they eventually lost, but they actually had
- 35:26Speaker 2: a chance, right? They were in control of that one
- 35:28Speaker 2: until the Riley Homer off duran you tip your cap
- 35:31Speaker 2: okay now game two didier fuentes throws freaking hard right
- 35:36Speaker 2: that one was i don't know what the velo number
- 35:39Speaker 2: was but elevated fastball again here's boom who said he
- 35:42Speaker 2: was trying to pull it he had one home run
- 35:45Speaker 2: to um right field out of his 15 in the
- 35:48Speaker 2: regular season like that's not where his baseballs go and
- 35:51Speaker 2: yet that's where the baseball lands like the beauty of
- 35:54Speaker 2: the sport when he does that.
- 35:56Speaker 3: I've had, I've had that happen to me a bunch
- 35:58Speaker 3: of times where I'm trying to pull a fastball and
- 36:01Speaker 3: then I, I hit like an off-speed pitch opposite field
- 36:03Speaker 3: and I thought I got the fastball. It's just, that's
- 36:05Speaker 3: my swing path. Like I, I never got the bat,
- 36:08Speaker 3: bat head out. Like I was more deflecting it. So, um,
- 36:13Speaker 3: I went, when he said that, I was like, oh,
- 36:15Speaker 3: I know exactly what that feels like. It's not that
- 36:17Speaker 3: we have a slow pull. We don't have a slow pull.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Like our, my bat speed isn't slow. It's just I
- 36:23Speaker 3: let the ball travel. So when I'm trying to pull it,
- 36:26Speaker 3: I might have moved it up like a half an inch,
- 36:29Speaker 3: which is the difference between catching 98-99 and hitting it
- 36:33Speaker 3: fair for a homer or fouling it off to a
- 36:37Speaker 3: Braves fan. So yeah, mentally he was trying to pull
- 36:40Speaker 3: the baseball, but the swing path was still the same. Incredible.
- 36:44Speaker 2: And it creates a game three. So props to Boehm.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Philly stay alive. Going to be an awesome game three.
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's the only game three that we get here, but
- 36:51Speaker 2: we'll appreciate it. They will get their prime time affair
- 36:54Speaker 2: now in Atlanta. You earn that division crown. You get
- 36:57Speaker 2: the home games. This is the game now. Well, we'll
- 37:00Speaker 2: see what happens. Looks like a 50-50 game if Wheeler's
- 37:02Speaker 2: pitching in that one to me. At the least, right?
- 37:06Speaker 2: If the Braves have some edges in some of the categories,
- 37:08Speaker 2: the Phillies should definitely have the edge.
- 37:11Speaker 1: In the starting pitching category. We'll be all over it.
- 37:13Speaker 2: We got two hours of FT live one to three Eastern.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So look forward to that. Also just to put a
- 37:19Speaker 2: cap on this player, the game segment, shout out to
- 37:22Speaker 2: MLB nine innings, 2026 game changing swings, momentum, shifting pitches.
- 37:27Speaker 2: You've got trout at the plate. Kershaw's in the game
- 37:29Speaker 2: on the mound, right? I also has been doing a
- 37:31Speaker 2: nice job on the TV broadcast tonight. New general ballers.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:35Speaker 1: He's been great experience. Perfect contact and clutch moments.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Like never before in MLB nine innings, 26, uh, phone
- 37:43Speaker 2: app store, wherever you've got it, download MLB nine innings, 26,
- 37:46Speaker 2: the game's free and that's going to do it for us.
- 37:49Speaker 1: So Spilly was awesome.
- 37:50Speaker 2: And then we'll see everyone on FT live on Thursday
- 37:54Speaker 2: afternoon with Kratz and Perzinski.
