Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you have ever quit a program because you missed a workout, or you've thrown in the towel because you just had one off day with your eating, or maybe you checked your watch at night and it was 7,000 steps and think, I didn't hit it 10,000, so it doesn't count.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Or ever thought, well, I already messed up, so I might as well wait till Monday to start over, then this episode is for you.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Today we are talking about the all-or-nothing mindset and why it's keeping you stuck and how to finally break free from it.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Midlife Flow Up Podcast, where we simplify fitness, nutrition, and healthy habits for women over 40.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I'm Joan Dandano, your midlife health and wellness coach.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And if you are ready to feel strong, consistent, and confident in this season, you are in the right place, my friend.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And today we're diving into one of the biggest mindset blocks that I see with women in midlife.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: The belief that if you can't do it perfectly, then why even bother to do it at all?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Because here's the truth that belief is keeping you stuck in a cycle of starting and stopping, and it is time to finally break free.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Let me paint a picture for you.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe this will resonate.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So you decide Monday is the day.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: You're gonna start fresh.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: You'll start to work out five days a week.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: You'll meal prep every Sunday, you'll drink all the water, you'll get all the sleep, you're all in.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And Monday goes great, and Tuesday goes pretty well as well.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Wednesday, life happens and you miss your workout because your meeting ran late and a kid needed you.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And then that's when that little voice starts up in the back of your head.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Well, I already messed up.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: The week is ruined.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I guess I'll just start over next Monday.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Does this sound familiar?
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it's more like this: you're doing really well with your nutrition.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You've been prioritizing protein and prepping your meals, and you're feeling good.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And then you go out to lunch with a girlfriend and you eat off plan, you have the pasta and you order the dessert.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And instead of just moving on, you think, well, I already blew it today.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I might as well eat whatever I want for dinner and dessert too.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Or this, you tell yourself you're going to work out five days a week.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And then life gets busy and you can only fit in two workouts that week.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So you think, well, if I can't do five, why even bother with two?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Or finally, you set a goal to hit 10,000 steps a day.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And at the end of your day, you check your watch and you're at 7,000.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And instead of celebrating 7,000 steps, which is movement, it's healthy, it still counts.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: You think, well, I didn't hit my goal, so it doesn't matter.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: As if 7,000 steps somehow is worthless because it wasn't 10,000.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: This is the all or nothing mindset.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And it is so common.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It sounds like I'll start on Monday so I can do it right, or I already missed my workout, so this whole week is ruined.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Or I ate off plan at lunch, so I might as well eat whatever I want the rest of the day.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: If I can't work out five days a week, why bother with two?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And if I didn't hit 10,000 steps, today was a total waste.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So where does this mindset come from?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I believe that diet culture really taught us that there is a right way and a wrong way to be healthy.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You're either on the wagon or you're off the wagon.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: You're either good or you're bad.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: You're either all in or you're failing.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So I think that we've been conditioned to believe that consistency means perfection, that if we're not giving 150%, then we're not doing enough.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And here's why this is keeping you stuck, because you're constantly starting over instead of starting to build momentum.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So every Monday becomes a fresh start because you quote unquote messed up last week, which means you never actually got anywhere.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So you just keep resetting back to zero.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: You're not giving yourself credit for what you are doing.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Those two workouts you did, they count.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Even though you wanted to do five, two still matters.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You ate protein at breakfast and lunch, and you think it doesn't matter because you had pizza for dinner.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: That's not how it works.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: That's not how biology works, that's not how our bodies work.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: You're quitting before you can actually see results.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Because the second things aren't perfect and you throw in the towel, you never give yourself enough time to actually build the habits that would create the change that you want to see.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: You're measuring yourself against an impossible standard because perfection doesn't exist.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Life is messy, work is busy, kids get sick, they need you, you're tired, you're at full capacity.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: But the all or nothing mindset doesn't allow for any of that.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So you're constantly falling short of a standard that was never realistic in the first place.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about what actually is possible when you let go of perfection.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So let's do some math here.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: If you commit to three workouts per week for let's say eight weeks, that is 24 workouts total.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Now let's say you only hit 80% of those, which feels imperfect, right?
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Because you set out to hit three workouts a week for eight weeks.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: That was your definition of perfect.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: If you only did 80%, that's 19 workouts.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: 19 workouts is still transformative to your body and your brain, even though you didn't hit the 24 that you set out to hit.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: 19 workouts will still make you stronger.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: They will still build muscle, they will still help you improve your bone density and boost your confidence.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: But what happens with the all or nothing mindset is you miss two workouts because life gets crazy, and then you decide the entire week is ruined, so therefore you quit.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And instead of 19 workouts over eight weeks, you get in maybe two or three before you give up completely.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Do you see the difference?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Imperfect consistency beats perfect inconsistency every single time.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Let me say that again.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Imperfect consistency beats perfect inconsistency every single time.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Your body doesn't care if you were quote unquote perfect.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Your body just responds to what you do.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: It doesn't even know what you don't do, right?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: So all of this is up in your head in the first place.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Missing one meal or one workout does not erase anything.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: It doesn't erase your progress.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: It's not about what happens on one day.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It's about what you do on most days.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: That's how the compound effect works.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Small actions repeated consistently, even imperfectly, add up to massive change over time.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: But you have to stay in the game long enough to see it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, I want to tell you about something that I have coming soon because I will circle back to this in a little bit.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: And I want to just make sure you understand what I'm talking about.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: If you're listening and you're not familiar with my signature eight-week group coaching program called the Midlife Glow Up, yes, it's the same name as the podcast.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I want to tell you what that is quickly.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I designed this program specifically for women over 40, women who were ready to take themselves off the back burner and prioritize themselves, prioritize themselves and stop spinning their wheels when it comes to fitness and nutrition.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: They're ready to learn simple strategies to build sustainable, healthy habits and step into midlife or beyond with strength and confidence.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So inside of this eight-week group coaching program, you get to choose your track.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: So if you are not in a great routine currently with strength training, then fitness is going to be your track.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And if you are ready to really simplify how you eat and prioritizing protein, maybe some food prep is an area that you want to focus on, then you would choose the nutrition track.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: If you want to do both, then you choose the hybrid track.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And then from there, you get a clear plan laid out week by week.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: We have weekly live group coaching calls.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You have three one-on-one check-ins where I personally review your plan and your progress.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And you get to be with a private community of women who are right there with you.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: It's so exciting.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And I am, I just get really giddy about who will be welcoming in for this next round.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: So we're currently in the launch for the program.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And here's why I'm telling you about this: because the entire program is built around this concept of progress over perfection.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Inside the program, we plan for imperfection from day one.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And part of this is because I am guilty of this myself.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Like this progress over perfection thing is something that I constantly struggle with personally.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But also, I have been coaching women for long enough to know that if we pretend like life is going to be perfect for eight weeks, we are setting ourselves up for failure.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I have coached a lot of women in groups.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: And I will say that this whole concept is one of the main reasons why I built this group coaching program the way that I did.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: We plan for imperfection from the beginning.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: We expect disruptions.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: We build in plan B because plan A, that quote unquote perfect version of your plan, will often fail.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And you have to have a backup plan ready to go.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: So that when the plan A fails, you're like, no big deal.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Here comes plan B.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: We also celebrate progress, not perfection.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: So in week one, you make your commitments.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: And in that, you're not just telling me what your plan is, you're also telling me what is your plan B.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: What will you do when you can't do your full workout?
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: When you don't have time to meal prep, what's your backup plan?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: When life throws you a curveball like sickness or an unexpected house guest, what are you going to do to make sure that you can still show up for yourself and make yourself proud?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Because life will always be lifing.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And instead of lifing being a reason to quit, it's just a reason to fall back on your backup plan, on your plan B.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: We measure progress differently inside of this program.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We don't measure success by whether you were perfect or you showed up exactly the way that you planned.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: We measure it by how far you've come, not how far you still have to go.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So I want to bring up my top recommended book of all times.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So if you have not read The Gap in the Gain by Dan Sullivan, go get yourself a copy.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: It is seriously so transformative.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: But here's the main idea: most people measure their progress by the gap, how far they still have to go to reach their ideal goal.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And that, my friends, is exhausting.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Because no matter what you do, no matter how hard you work, no matter how much progress you make, you're still focused on what is missing.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: But when you measure yourself by the gain, then you look back and you see how far you have already come, and that shifts everything.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Suddenly you're not focused anymore on what you haven't done yet.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: You're celebrating what you actually have done.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: You're like, dang, look at what I've done.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: And that builds confidence.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: That builds momentum and that keeps you going.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So inside the Midlife Glow Up Group coaching program, we focus on the gain.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Inside the program, you get three one-on-one check-ins with me.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So my eyes on your plan and your progress and your life, the messy middle of it.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And at that midpoint check, I ask you, what are you most proud of so far?
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And this could be a big thing or this could be a small thing.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And women will say things like, I did workouts two weeks in a row without skipping.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I meal prepped for the first time in months.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I didn't quit even though I had a bad week.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: See, these aren't like astronomical things.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: These are like very realistic, real life wins, and we celebrate them because that's how we build momentum.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: We do not build momentum through focusing on perfection.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: We build momentum through acknowledging progress.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Looking back at how far you've come builds confidence and self-trust.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: And those two things are so important, especially after 40.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And that is what actually creates lasting change, which is what we want.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: We are no longer sticking around for quick fixes.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: We want an actual shift in the trajectory of where our life is heading.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: So, yes, please, to more confidence and more self-trust.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I want to tell you what this looks like in real life.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to just pull a few of some stories from previous rounds of the Midlife Glow Up Group coaching program.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: One of the rounds we had a woman who got pretty sick in about week three of the program.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: She missed almost two weeks' worth of workouts.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And the old her would have quit right there, thinking, like, I'm already behind, everybody else is ahead of me, I'll just drop out.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll catch up with them another time.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: But she decided this time to make a different choice.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: So she came back in week five and picked up where she had left off.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And she just kept going.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: And by week eight, she was stronger than she had been in years.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: She didn't miss out on the transformation because she missed a few workouts.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: She got the transformation because she didn't quit.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: And that right there, just the self-trust of like, oh, just because life threw me a curveball didn't mean I had to quit.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: It just meant that I paused and I honored where I was, and then I picked right back up where I left off.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And I still was able to make myself proud.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I get goosebumps just thinking about her.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: I had another woman who at the beginning, she committed to level two.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: So in the fitness track, you can choose either level one workouts or level two workouts.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Level one is for the woman who is just starting or just restarting her lifting routine.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Level two is for women who have already been lifting some, um, but they are ready to level up.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: And so she started out with level two workouts.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Life got really hard for her through some personal things as well as just a tough time at work.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And around week five of eight, she said everything was just so overwhelming.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Family stuff was going on, and really she was not feeling like she could show up fully.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: So instead of quitting, she decided to just drop down to level one.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: The workouts are a little quicker, they are less frequent.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And instead of beating herself up for not doing enough, she celebrated the fact that she continued to show up at all.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And she was still able to get stronger.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: She still finished the program, she still transformed because showing up imperfectly is still showing up.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And then finally, I had a woman on the nutrition track.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: So she had never really done much food prep before and was like, gosh, that really would set me up so well for the week, you know, just busy having things to quickly grab and go.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So at the beginning, I remember she set me her plan, and it was like she was gonna meal prep all this stuff at the beginning of the week.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and I encouraged her to start with baby steps.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So we kind of cut that in half.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And she set out to do this Sunday food prep session every week.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And so she started out, she would batch cook some chicken and some veggies.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: And uh, the next week she added in some carbs and made some overnight oats so she would have some breakfast on hand as well.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: What happened was she found that if there was travel or social things on a Sunday, that it just kind of threw her off course and she went right into the work week without having any food prepped.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: But luckily, she had her plan B ready to go.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: So she had some hard-boiled eggs on hand that Costco did for her.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: So all she had to do was open up the bag and eat them.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: She didn't have to boil water and, you know, peel the eggs.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: She also had some protein shakes on hand.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And so even the weeks that the food prep session didn't actually happen, she could have decided that that was a failure.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: But in reality, even though it wasn't quote unquote perfect doing a full food prep session on a Sunday, she had still gotten herself a few things that were her plan B or her backup plan.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: So she still was able to increase her protein intake over the eight weeks.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: She still felt more energized, she still saw results.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Because progress isn't about doing it perfectly, it's about doing it consistently, even when consistency looks messy.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: So, with all of these women that I just shared their stories with you, none of them were perfect, but all of them made progress.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: And that is the difference.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: They didn't quit when life got messy.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what I want for you as well.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want you to start asking yourself.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Instead of asking yourself, am I doing this perfectly?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Ask, am I doing this better than I was doing a week ago or four weeks ago?
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Are you moving your body more consistently than before?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: That is progress.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: If you're increasing your protein more than you were before, that is progress.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: If you're showing up for yourself, keeping promises to yourself more than you were before, that is progress.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be perfect in order to transform inside and out.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: You just have to be consistent.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And consistency, remember, does not mean every single day.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: It means most days.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: It means more often than not.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: It means not quitting when things get hard.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Progress over perfection isn't just a cute saying, it's actually the strategy that works in our stage of life.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna paint two pictures for you.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Imagine you are on a trail and you've got a path to your left, and you have a path to your right.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And the path on the left, there's a little sign and it says, you keep waiting for the perfect time.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Path on your left, you wait until work slows down.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: You wait until after spring break.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: You wait until the kids are less busy.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: You wait until you feel ready.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: You wait until summer's over.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Or the holidays have passed.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And before you know it, months have gone by and nothing changes.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Because perfect never comes.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: There will always be something.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: There will always be a reason to wait to push it off.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And while you're waiting, your body is getting older.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Inevitably, our metabolism is slowing down, our muscle mass is declining.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: The perfect time is never coming.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: And waiting for it is costing you.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: The path on your right, the little sign says, you start now imperfectly.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: You commit to showing up as best you can.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Some days that's a full workout.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Some days that's ten minutes.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Some days you food prep.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Some days you grab a protein shake.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: You give yourself grace on the hard days and you celebrate the small wins.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: And eight weeks from now you have built real momentum.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Not because you were perfect, but because you were consistent.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Not because you did everything right, but because you didn't quit when things got messy.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: And you look back and you realize that imperfect consistency just changed your whole freaking life.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: So if you have been waiting to feel ready, if you've been waiting for the perfect time to start, if you've been telling yourself that you just can't join the Midlife Glow Up group coaching program because you know you won't be able to be perfect.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: I want you to hear this.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: This program was built for imperfect women living real, messy, busy, chaotic lives.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: It's designed to work even when life is lifing, especially when life is lifing.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: We don't expect perfection.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: We expect you to be human.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: We plan for the hard days and we build in flexibility and we celebrate progress, not perfection.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: So if you are ready to stop letting perfectionism keep you stuck, this is your chance.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: This is your invitation.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: The doors are open for this round of the midlife glow-up currently.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: You have just a little over a week left to jump in.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: I only offer this program two times a year.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: So if you've been on the fence because you're afraid you won't be able to do it perfectly, please let that fear go.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: You do not need to be perfect.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: You just have to be willing to show up imperfectly, willing to keep going when things get hard, willing to celebrate yourself, the progress over chasing perfection.
