Luna: Thanks so much for listening and supporting the show. It really means a lot to Lucas and me. Now, let us get back to learning. Today is a new topic. Lucas: Yes. We have talked about rooms, furniture, and cleaning. But what about the rules? When you visit someone's home in France, or stay in a gîte, there are often specific rules. Today we will learn five simple phrases for house rules and manners. Luna: I love this. It is practical. I always feel a little nervous when I see a sign I do not understand. So, what is the first rule? Lucas: The first one is very common. It is about smoking. In many places in France, smoking is restricted. The phrase is Pas de fumée. Luna: Pas de fumée. Let me try. Pas de fumée. Lucas: Exactly. Pas de fumée. It literally means no smoke. It is a clear sign you might see on a door or a wall. Luna: Okay. Pas de fumée. Got it. That is short and easy to remember. What is next? Lucas: The second phrase is a bit different. Usually, signs ask for quiet. But today we are doing something playful. The phrase is S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Luna: Wait. Faites du bruit? Make noise? Isn't that the opposite of a house rule? Lucas: It is a fun exception. Maybe you are at a party house, or a student dormitory where energy is high. S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Please, make some noise. Luna: Oh, I see. S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Okay. That sounds energetic. S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Lucas: Perfect. S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Just use it in the right context, okay? Luna: Right. Definitely not for a library. Or a hospital. Okay, moving on to something more standard. What is the third phrase? Lucas: Hygiene is important in every home. Especially after coming inside from the cold weather we discussed earlier. The phrase is Lavez-vous les mains. Luna: Lavez-vous les mains. Wash your hands. I know lavage is washing. Lavez-vous les mains. Lucas: Very good. Lavez-vous les mains. It is an imperative command, polite but direct. You might see this near the sink or the bathroom. Luna: Lavez-vous les mains. I can imagine seeing that above the mirror. Lavez-vous les mains. Lucas: Correct. Lavez-vous les mains. It is a kind reminder. Now, the fourth phrase involves nature. Even indoors, sometimes there are plants or indoor gardens. Luna: Indoor gardens? That sounds lovely. What is the rule? Lucas: The phrase is Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Do not walk on the grass. Luna: Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Lucas: Yes. Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. This uses the negation ne...pas, which we touched on before, but here it is combined with sur l'herbe, on the grass. Luna: Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. It flows well. Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Lucas: Exactly. Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. It protects the green spaces. Finally, the fifth phrase is about security. When you enter a building, the door is heavy. Luna: Oh yes. I have forgotten to close doors many times. What is the phrase? Lucas: The phrase is Fermez la porte. Close the door. Luna: Fermez la porte. Simple. Fermez la porte. Lucas: Yes. Fermez la porte. It is essential for keeping the heat in during winter, or the cool air in during summer. Luna: Fermez la porte. I will remember that one. It saves energy too. Fermez la porte. Lucas: Let us review all five together. First, Pas de fumée. Luna: Pas de fumée. Lucas: Second, S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Luna: S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Lucas: Third, Lavez-vous les mains. Luna: Lavez-vous les mains. Lucas: Fourth, Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Luna: Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Lucas: And fifth, Fermez la porte. Luna: Fermez la porte. Lucas: Excellent. You are getting these down nicely. These phrases help you navigate social spaces with respect and clarity. Luna: I feel more confident now. If I see a sign, I can read it. No more guessing. Pas de fumée. S'il vous plaît, faites du bruit. Lavez-vous les mains. Ne marchez pas sur l'herbe. Fermez la porte. Lucas: That is the spirit. Practice saying them aloud. Repetition is key. Remember, small steps lead to big progress. Luna: True. And remember, support keeps this going.
