- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody welcome back into the Cleveland Guardians on SI report.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Pat Blair alongside Cleveland Guardians reporter Kate Crackus.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: We've got an interesting weekend to recap here, Kate, because you know what?
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: We said it to each other in the text.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: What was that?
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like the first bubble header.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: What was that?
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then for seven and a half innings of that, second half of the double header.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: that game was awful and then Sunday, you know, Paul schemes coming into town.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was kind of an interesting series with the pirates.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Not sure what's to be made.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: Get uh, you know, what to can be made out of that series.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: But if there is anything kid you've got to hear over on Cleveland Guardians on SI, what were your initial thoughts from that weekend series?
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: We call it a weekend series as if Friday didn't get canceled.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think you take a look at this entire, you know, weekend and how it went for the Guardians and then I'm wondering it stands out to me.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously it's the disappointment from both the pitching staff at large, but also the bats the plate and then you kind of take a step back and you look for one silver lining.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_03]: I always try to find something, you know, you kind of have to have something that was either positive or something that you could afford to down the line to me that was even quant.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_03]: I think he's had a really, really strong research over the last couple of weeks.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_03]: I think he's up to what 17.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_03]: or 18 hits in the last 20 or 21 games.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_03]: So he's on a streak right now that's been pretty remarkable.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_03]: In his batting, I just back over to 240, went two for four for the from the plate today with an RBI back in that one spot.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: And the thing is, if you can keep this going moving forward, Pat, Cleveland's going to be a much better spot because then you really round out your one through five.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: If you can get Kwan, Bazana, Roku, Ramirez, and Martinez, all of those spots.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: I mean,
- 1:34[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to have to be looking at what to do here down the line, but I think if Steven Quan can just become that go to number one guy again, you're just looking at a much lower well rounded roster in line up at large.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: I wore the guard's ball shirt for a reason today because Steven Quan obviously turning the corner a little bit.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's great to see him too.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: The defense obviously wasn't able to come up with that diving play here on Sunday as we record this Sunday evening, but you know, Steven Quan, he's you can count on his defense pretty much all of the time and you know, if you can get that back going at this point,
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: kind of funny how we've kind of turned the circle there where anything you can get from the bat from him is sort of a bonus at this point because we've seen the Nadir we've seen like the bottom of you know rock bottom for Stephen Kwan offensively but if you can get anything from him we have some interesting plays too yet a suicide squeeze on Sunday a safety squeeze as well you know but when he's getting the ball in play good things do seem to happen hopefully the baseball gods are starting to smile on him a little bit more there was one play I do want to dive in real quickly Stephen Kwan with him
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, he gets on base with that safety squeeze, as I mentioned, you push or run across and then you've got to run around third base there.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Pazana strikes out, it's team calm is stealing on that one thrown out of second base.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: I hated that decision right there.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure if you did as well.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: I thought the base running as at large on Sunday was awful and kind of the series long as well, too.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: But that decision right there early on against ball schemes.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you strike out, okay, Travis Pazana.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, strikeouts are going to happen.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's Paul schemes.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: You ran into and out there with a runner on third base.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I just did not love that kind of set the tone early for the guardians that base running was awful on Sunday.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think the biggest issue is, Pat, when you take a look at the base running from this team all year long, you're never saying they're good at base running.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_03]: That's the issue.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_03]: Like, they're a very average team at base running and then there are some days just got awful.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_03]: And the issue to me is that if you have a team that, okay, has moments like this, but they're really aggressive and they have some really exciting moments when they're swiping bags or getting home on something impressive.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_03]: it's a guinea pig right right now you're just giving away and like it's like this isn't working at all because you're not you're not making up for these disastrous outings where base ratings costing you games like we saw a lot earlier in the season with games that it's like oh my gosh the base running one us this game that's just not a thing and it's not happening.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_03]: So to me, I think you really have to completely rethink what you're doing moving forward because the only guys that feel relatively competent at stealing bases right now at least in my eyes is Bazana and Jose Ramirez.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_03]: And everybody else, you see him stealing like, oh my gosh, what's about to happen, right?
- 3:59[SPEAKER_03]: We saw Reece Hoskins steal second.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_03]: That was incredible.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_03]: Like what?
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then you should not believe it.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like what's going on here because then you look the other guys, do you think, okay, Rokio or Kwan, two guys you feel it can be fine at stealing bases, but they've struggled this here.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's one of the things, there's a lot of times where the Guardians do go first to third pretty well.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: They do that at a pretty decent clip as well.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: But there's times where it's the unforced errors.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: You talk about that in sports across the board where you don't let, you know, it's hard enough to beat Paul schemes or it's hard enough to beat the pirates two out of three in a weekend.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: But don't beat yourselves two out of three times, right?
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where the thing that gets me is Brian Rokio, I know he wants to be aggressive on the base path, Steven Kwan wanted to be aggressive.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: If you're stealing and Travis Pazana strikes out like he did, maybe you thought you got a good jump.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: I understand all of that sort of stuff got tastes a lot of coming up next with a runner on third base in scoring position.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: And honestly, he's not really that big of a double play candidate there as well too.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: So there's tons of decision making as well.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: We got to kind of dive into this one as well because one of the worst plays of the entire weekend with Gabriel Arias.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: This was on the base running side too, because he had a pretty bad one in defensively as well.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: But on the base running side, he goes back to second base, tag second base, goes past, and doesn't retake going to third base, you lose a runner in scoring position there.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: Just stuff like that that's kind of boneheaded.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's back off of the break and I know it's takes maybe a minute to get back into the swing of things, but those are mistakes that cannot happen for your clipping audience.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and Pat, it feels like we're talking about something like this every other week with the guardians and I understand they're young like they're a really young core that a rate ranges from what 23 to 26 in a realm of these guys still trying to get settled into their careers in areas is one of those guys to me who's.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_03]: 26 years old and still just has not gotten that settled in feeling behind him yet and like no matter what he's doing out there with its on the field or at the plate like you just look at him and you see a guy who's just not there yet and he's not there skill wise yet he's not there comfortable wise yet.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_03]: He's got the talent.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_03]: He's got all the talent in the world.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_03]: Chris Jimenez said, you know, he's probably arguably one of the most talented players in the league, like he has the power to just completely destroy the baseball and even moment.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's got the arm to get a throw from third to first on a diving play.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_03]: Like he can do things like that, but then he can do other things like we saw where he, he missed the backpick tag at third and then he also, you know, had that blender on the base paths.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: So to me, R.A. is such a frustrating player to watch because there's something there, and you can see it, like everyone can see with those little moments where he's destroying the baseball 440 feet, or he's making a great play defensively, but then he's contradicting it, the very next game, or the very next play by doing something to complete opposite.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_03]: And to me, it's just like it's so frustrating to see because
- 6:41[SPEAKER_03]: where do you go with him?
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: Like everyone asks that every other series or every other week like what's the plan with Gabriel Orius?
- 6:48[SPEAKER_03]: Because it's that running joke.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like every time he does something good, he's buying himself another month.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_03]: There's just bad riddle through it.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_03]: And then every time he does something good, you're like, this is what he could be and how big could that be for the Guardian.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know where you go for with Gabriel Orius, but man, Cleveland's in such a weird spot with him.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's such a strange spot too, because you know, there's rumors as well.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, do you flip them over across the other side of the diamond?
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: Because Reece Hoskins, Kyle Manzardo, those guys, having exactly been tearing the cover up for the ball all season long.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're at the worst that they've been all season long.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: Manzardo, to me, looks lost at the plate.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, at a certain point in time at third base, Jose Ramirez, will be back hopefully it's within the next two weeks.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I'm hoping for.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: I know we've got probably more news to dive into with that one as well, because he's been back in the ballpark, getting some treatment as well.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: But Gabriel Arias, I mean,
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: Just because you hit 140 doesn't excuse the over four with five strike, you know, over four, four strikeouts, over five, five strikeouts, that sort of thing.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: He's a feaster fan in type of player, and that's why you can't really quit him, but I think one thing that the general fans don't necessarily understand about.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: you know major league baseball that they value in the clubhouse is hitting the ball hard whether you hit the ball for 40 or whether you hit it 390 whether it goes out or you know if it's a home run it's a home run but at a certain point the approach at the plate for him I think that needs to be absolutely examined because these up at bats he goes up there with Gator are truly awful to see because our first basement I just said you don't look good neither of his areas so I don't know if you flip him over across the you know flip him across the diamond if that really even solves your problem but
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: At a certain point in time, I just don't think there's going to be a chair here in this musical chairs for Gabriel Iris.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's going to be on the roster.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't know where you're going for because I do think that we've talked to this a lot on the show recently, Pad.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of like you're getting to this point where the deadlines looming and you have to make a decision here.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_03]: Are you going to go all in or are you going to build towards the future?
- 8:35[SPEAKER_03]: But no matter what you do and what you decide in that realm, you still have to move pieces around.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_03]: And Gabriel Iris is a guy you either to invest in and say,
- 8:42[SPEAKER_03]: This is the guy we're going for with the next three, four years, or this is a guy we're going to move now, bring up an hour, bring up half-four, or make the move to start building other guys up to to come to the big leagues, or you've got, and you're saying we're contending this year, or we're going to make a legitimate run to make something happen, and you go out and you get a guy who can be reliable and play in the spots that Arias could have meant that whether it's shortstop or third base or whatever it may be.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_03]: But the other part of the the puzzle to me is couldn't the guy I'm just be sitting here going All right, we're going to run out of areas out there until hose you returns, but no matter what you still have to decide on the Areous future here in Cleveland and I just don't know where that's at right now.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if anyone really does because you hear guys talking about you hear other Remembers discussing it and it's just such a lost case right now of what's the plan because either
- 9:29[SPEAKER_03]: The issue to me is, yes, the talons there and we talked about this like five minutes ago, the talons there and we've seen it from time and time again, of like the four 40-hole runs.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_03]: But this is a guy that you're trying out if you're not contending.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?
- 9:42[SPEAKER_03]: Like you don't like, you wouldn't see this a guy like this playing on the Dodgers and being given such a long leash because the Dodgers are contending.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_03]: The thing to me is if the Guardians want to legitimately contend, you can't be trying out a guy like this unless
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is one thing to about, you know, he's, you would refer to him as a tool's player, right?
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Jimenez, what he's talking about with that Mike Troc comparison is not necessarily that far off because he's got the tools about it, but there's a reason there's 162 games, right?
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like you have to play a day game after a night game or a night game, you know, double header, that sort of thing.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: You can't just go out there and kind of go through the motions.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: This game will punish you.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Jimenez knows that better than anybody.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: I know Carlos Bayerga, he's a little bit of an Arya's defender here at the network.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't blame him necessarily.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: But sometimes the tools just can't get you through all of the time.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: I know that there's going to be other times where you're just not able to do it all of the way through where relying on the tools can't get you there.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: But Kade, we now stand at 52 and 48.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to take a quick break here on the Cleveland Guardians on S.I.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Report because
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: We just finished up a series against Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: We're 52 and 48, they're 52 and 48.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: Those feel like two different teams.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to try to figure out what this team is next.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Coming up here on the Cleveland Guardians on S.I.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: report.

- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: But there were still seven hits for the Guardians.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't feel like a dominating effort for Paul schemes, but the Guardians they made so many mistakes that they didn't really damage Paul schemes and the pirates.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like they had that one a little bit closer than the seven to one final score.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's right out.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: So I was going to get that job done for Paul's team.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: That thing you only allowed two walks, you know seven hits is seven hits.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I agree with you 100%.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: Like you look at the line.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: You don't you don't think that, but you look at what Paul's team did today and you saw a relatively dominating performance.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_03]: I mentioned it in there.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_03]: How skiing said some of those early out set the tone.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: And to me that makes a ton of sense in the sense of, you know, you look at what happened yesterday.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_03]: It was a 7-1 victory in the first game of the day, and then they rub 3-0 until the 8th inning when the Guardians miraculously pulled off a rally against one of the worst bullpens in Major League Baseball.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_03]: So to me, yeah, like it was, it was a down main performance.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: Cleveland got exposed in the sense that we need to see some moves happen at the deadline, whether it's intently or externally, whether it's building towards the future or making it a move this year to to go make a deeper run in the postseason, Paul schemes showed that Cleveland needs bass and they need competent, reliable, effective bass.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_03]: They need guys that can go up there and deliver two or three hits that actually make a difference in a game.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_03]: Like it's it's not just that gritty, garnt bullet mentality that can win
- 13:18[SPEAKER_03]: down and gap into the right center field and getting a single out of it, or hit a blooper that gets by the short stop.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_03]: You need to go up there, rip one to the right field corner.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_03]: Bash one out to the center field above the center field was ahead.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_03]: You need a guy who can go up there and make a opposing team's fear, their presence at the plate.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know who that is, I don't know who they're going to be able to go out and get because
- 13:37[SPEAKER_03]: It's hard being someone who's in tap to Cleveland's front office and somebody who has watched this team of the past couple of years, Pat, because they don't go out and make blockbuster moves.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_03]: They rarely do 2016.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_03]: They made moves for arms at the deadline to increase the capacity down the stretch of the season.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_03]: But right now, this team leaves that and some guy who can go up there and say,
- 13:59[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a dominant hitter.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_03]: You got a fear me because we haven't seen that from Hoji this year yet.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_03]: We haven't seen that really from Bazada, Rocchio, Manzardo, anyone like that consistently.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, they've had their moments and I'm not saying they haven't or they will not down the line.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_03]: But when you guys who can be someone who goes in and you go, this is going to be a tough out.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_03]: Because Clevina doesn't have that right now.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: And the one thing too is like, there's one thing of guys you can hit it all at the ball.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: You are like, Gabriella Ari's, but at a certain point, you do actually have to have professional at bats up there as well.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: To just and lot of talks about it, you know, friend of show, just and lot of where, okay, great.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: You want to go get a power hitting right into bed terrific.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: So does everybody else, right?
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be kind of the difficulty with the Cleveland Guardians.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys don't grow on trees first of all, because
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: typically they're not getting moved right like some of these pictures at the deadline you know that some of their teams are winning a little bit more so you might see fewer starting pictures move I've got a sneaking suspicion it's only July you know 19th as we record this right now Kate I think it's gonna be a pretty quiet deadline across major league baseball.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see that many moves it seemed like last year there were tons in tons of bullpen moves
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really see it this year, but if the Guardians can bring in somebody like Taylor Ward or Spencer Steer, we also saw an Olsen road about that on Cleveland Guardians on SI, there's some interesting trade targets, but the bats, there's not a lot of depth there in terms of the acquisition market, that sort of thing, but the Guardians are definitely going to have to do it because Resoskins is not going to cut a David Fry is not going to cut a Gabriel Irish is not going to cut it either.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what, on your best day, Paul schemes, he's still a right hand
- 15:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's the catch to me.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, these guys aren't bad players in the sense of, like, they make sense to have on a roster, but to rely on your goats, you guys.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_03]: A hundred percent.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_03]: That's the perfect way to put it.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_03]: They're not your goats to rely upon guys.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_03]: Like these are guys that can fill holes or come in and a pinch, or, you know, for Bluetooth advantages, maybe you go to.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_03]: That's that guard's momentality and I'm fine with that, but not when it's coming at the expense of going out and making moves and to me, the point that Justin makes is perfect because it's true, like everyone wants to go and do these things, however the thing to me is that Cleveland has something that teams don't have or teams wants and to that it's really, really talented.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: Players across the minor league system like on-held and now one of the top prospects in the system right now and one of the top prospects in baseball he's a guy you could move the deadline the 25 class is incredibly talented new kill Nolan shoebark jays live you let Dean curly
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: air and wool.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_03]: You have guys here that teams could be interested in because they're 25 draft picks who are quickly rising through the system.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_03]: They're guys who are in AA and soon to be triple AA.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: They have guys a coupe wringle, Cody Huff.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: These guys who could play catcher play first, play third play in the outfield.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_03]: You have guys in the system right now.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_03]: who I believe don't really currently fit the mold for the Cleveland Guardians and what they're trying to be and that's a contending squad who could be moved for contending pieces that pushed this team over the hump.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_03]: And again, I go back to that lack of identity because I feel like we don't know it and part of the issue is as a fan base, you kind of always get a feel for where your team's at.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_03]: Like the Dodgers know they're contending.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: You know, the meds thought going in this year they'd be contending, but right now they understand that they're not and they need to make a lot of changes has the offseason approaches, right?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: Or you look at someone like the white socks, right?
- 17:17[SPEAKER_03]: Now you look at them and you go, you're building for the future, you've got a really young core who's working really well together, and you don't only have a lot of holes to fill at the moment.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_03]: Or you look at someone like the Pirates and you go, you've got a lot of really young bass a pretty well-rounded lineup that's finding its groove here on this point of the campaign, but your bullpen needs a lot of changes right now.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_03]: The guardians you look at and you go, I don't know what you're doing.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know if that's just like if that's just a personal thought because I've been so heavily deep into the fold this year or if it's just because I'm too deep that I'm over analyzing it or not.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_03]: But you look at them and you go, you're a young team, but you're trying out youngsters that don't make sense or have lost their, their, their leash, right?
- 17:58[SPEAKER_03]: Or you're looking at a pitching staff that you go, this looks good, but incomplete.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like Gavin Williams right now has been one of your worst starting pitchers over the past two months.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_03]: But Parker Messick, your rookie was like, I, who this year going into this year, didn't look like he'd be a part of the starting rotation.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_03]: Now, your bolt then you go, Cade Smith.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you look at your bolt then you go, Cade Smith.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_03]: He's one of the best closures in baseball.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: outside of him, everyone else was incredibly unreliable.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know where you go from here for the Guardians, because I feel like as a fan base, we might say we're just a couple pieces or two away.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know for you, Mark.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_03]: I don't even know.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: Right now, you need to do a lot of things.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_03]: You got to make some changes in this lineup.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_03]: You got to add some town to this bullpen.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_03]: Because if you don't,
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: What are you doing?
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's the thing too.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: The difficult part is there are so many moving pieces, but I think Kade, one thing that we can hang our head on on Saturday night was Travis Besana and Chase Delater, because as you write about here on Cleveland Guardians on SI, Travis Besana's Silence, the Pirates which was a perfect way to put that.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the guardians were kind of silenced for seven innings, but luckily these young stars came through for the Cleveland Guardians.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: I know there's a lot of inconsistency everywhere else, but the guardians were able to come through with the young bats, taste the water, Travis Pazana came through in the clutch moments.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: Luckily we've got those guys because if not, I don't know where would we would be at right now, especially with this lineup as well coming from the left side, those left handed bats as well.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: But it was good to see on Saturday night that's kind of the only positive that we can take out of this weekend, okay, because
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: you know we we've got our young bats that we know we can rely on chased a lot of Travis was on up.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully a lot of these other left handed bats, Cleo Watson can continue to sort of get their feet underneath them.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully Cooper Angle can come back up and establish himself as a left handed bat.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: But Kate other than that, those are kind of the only positives that we got to take out of this weekend and potentially moving forward.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think there's a lot of things that Cleveland has to do self addressing wise.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_03]: They have to sit back and just sign what the path is moving forward.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not trying to say, you've got to blow up the ship.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just saying that certain guys right now that you're looking at, you're going, I just don't understand the fit right now.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_03]: And I understand you won't have a good clubhouse.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_03]: And this is a really tight bunch.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not gonna knock that at all.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_03]: But there's there's guys here that you're going I don't know if it just makes sense to keep them on this roster or at least on this roster and expense for not going out and making a bigger move because you do need to do something here and you do need to add some tell to the room and whether it's guys that are immediately going to make this team better or guys that maybe in a year going to make this team better you have to decide with the decisions going to be because what's going on right now cannot be trying to out again next year.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_03]: That's just that's just simply the case in in in in the sense of like a bazana you're not like a bazana obviously is a guy in a rock kind of change.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_03]: The water's not a guy you're not going to change.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_03]: Khalil will watch and you're not going to change him.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_03]: But the Gabriel Oresis, the David fries, the Reese Hoskins, the even even I'm going to argue that the Patrick Bailey's a world.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_03]: You just got to figure out what the decision is.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_03]: Is it a long term fit or not?
- 20:43[SPEAKER_03]: Because if it's not, then you have to start making the moves that make sense to build this team up for the future.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_03]: Because you can't keep sitting here, as Zach Micell said, on unto the three of the fan a couple of days back.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_03]: You can't just be sitting, you're going, let's get to the playoffs, let's exit in the first round and that's just success because it's not.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_03]: It's simply is it.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_03]: You don't go into another campaign going, all we're trying to do is make the postseason and then get bounced.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_03]: Because it's not the case.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_03]: What you're trying to do is go out there and make improvements year after year.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_03]: And so far, you don't seem improvement from last year.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_03]: You don't seem improvement from the year before that.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_03]: We're kind of just in this never ending loop of trying to chase what we had, back in that ALCS series against the Yankees years ago, or what we had back in 2016 making the world series.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 21:25[SPEAKER_03]: And to me, I understand you're going to have falloffs and you're going to have down years, right?
- 21:29[SPEAKER_03]: But Cleveland's had the praise nationally for how well their farm system is built up, but that farm system talent isn't translating the world series runs, at least not right now.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's the crazy thing right now is we've been saying this it feels like for at least five years since probably the twenty twenty one season twenty one off season I should say where You know none of this is good enough like the guys that you're bringing in the the Nolan Joneses of the world that sort of thing that the Jake Bowers being your first basement we've been about over fifty five basically
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: Those are not good enough.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like we've been saying that for quite a long time.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I get so kind of up and arms against the front office because, yeah, you okay, you know, Reece Hoskins, that sort of thing we're trotting out Kyle Manzardo back in there.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: But at a certain point, this is unacceptable for a team that has won the division multiple years in a row, just getting to the dance as you said perfectly as X at perfectly, you know, that is just not acceptable and it's not enough because.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: We expect more here at Cleveland like this team can win.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: They've got a good foundation.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they've got great coaches as well, too.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: But hopefully the guardians can get this back on track because you know, I think there's more positive than there is negative here in this franchise.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: It does feel a little bit weird.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: There are a game back of the Chicago White socks, two games back in the lost column.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: This team doesn't feel like a first place team though.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, I know it's not, uh,
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: a happy message to start the week off with but I just don't think that this team feels like a first place team right now and that's kind of fine as long as you're able to add to them at the deadline and make some moves to make yourself a little bit more potent going into the offseason because Tom Hamilton talked about it too on the broadcast like this guard's ball doesn't necessarily always win in the playoffs right so you need to get some home run hitters at least somebody who can take you deep you know bring the ball out of the ballpark as well a couple of times before he played but we got so much more to dive into the twins coming to town
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: Starting off that twin series.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: Be careful of that first inning winner that's all that I'm going to say, but hopefully the Guardians can at least take two out of three here in the early going against the twins.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe take you three out of four in the whole series too.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: That would be great.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: But, Kate, any final thoughts as we head into the week here for the guards?
- 23:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think it's a must win series against the twins.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you can't fall back against an American League Central opponent and expect it to find a way to rebound to first place.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_03]: I know we've seen it in years past where the Guardians pull something out of the hat down the stretch of the campaign, but you can't expect that every year.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_03]: And again, it goes back to what you said about moments ago about how right now you're kind of sitting there going, you gotta do something.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_03]: And again, right now, you might not be a contending squad, but all the Guardians have to do
- 23:47[SPEAKER_03]: is just solidify what they have, right?
- 23:49[SPEAKER_03]: You've just got to find some sort of reliability.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: And again, this conversation here mid-July doesn't immediately rule them out from being a postseason team, right?
- 23:58[SPEAKER_03]: But what does is that this squad heading into the postseason in this sort of form, this inconsistent
- 24:05[SPEAKER_03]: every other series they look good, or once every couple of weeks they deliver one of the most memorable and credible moments whether they're producing a walk-off victory and come back fashion.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_03]: Those are all good and dandy to the heartstrings into the mind to feel good.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_03]: But when you take a step back and you look at it from the realistic standpoint,
- 24:23[SPEAKER_03]: It's not viable.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's not a long-term capable to go up against a contending squad or a team that's really strong like the Yankees, like the Dodgers, even like this pirate teams team that we saw.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_03]: You can't do that every series and you specifically can't do it when it matters the most down the stretch in December, October.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely, and this series two coming up against the twins.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's actually no laugh or two because the twins, you know, they're four games pack right now.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: They're 49 and 51.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: They've made a little bit of noise in the alcentral.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny to say that when you're below 500 that you can make them noise in the alcentral, but that's where we stand right now.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully the guardians can get themselves back on track.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: That sweep against Miami is looking really critical before the algebraic because if not, if they didn't take.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: three out of three there, boy, boy, what we'll be talking about right now, Kate.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: It would be kind of kind of the like the world was falling down a little bit.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: This guy is falling at that certain point.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully we'll have more positive news here on Thursday after this twin series as well.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: But for Clevver Guardians on SI Insider, Kate Crack is on Pat Ware.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you next time.
