- 0:08the Kansas City Royals faced the Chicago White
- 0:11Sox at Comiskey Park for Game 2 of a Sunday afternoon
- 0:13doubleheader. The Royals were led by Whitey Herzog
- 0:17and in first place in the AL West with a 33 -28
- 0:19record and a one -game lead over the Angels.
- 0:22The Sox were managed by Bob Lemon and were hovering
- 0:25around .500 for most of the season. The Royals
- 0:28had won the first game of the doubleheader with
- 0:30an 11 -inning thriller earlier in the afternoon.
- 0:32For the second game, the Royals would send Paul
- 0:34Splittorf to the mound to face Chicago's Ron
- 0:36Shuler. This audio recording is from the radio
- 0:39broadcast featuring announcers Lorne Brown, Harry
- 0:42Carey, and Jimmy Pearsall. that up as both these
- 0:58clubs a year ago. It's practically identical
- 1:02averages against each other. 275 to 270 is in
- 1:05favor of the White Sox. And both hit 17 home
- 1:08runs and drove in 72 runs against the others.
- 1:13Willie Wilson batting to the left side leads
- 1:15it off. He went two for three and drove in a
- 1:17run in the first game. That tied it up to the
- 1:19seventh. Kansas City went into the 11 inning
- 1:213 -2 and we did get an explanation. I'm surprised
- 1:26that Laron Legros did not show on the second
- 1:28base to get Hal McRae. Turned out to have the
- 1:31winning run in his hip pocket. Ron Shuler delivers.
- 1:33Here's the second pitch and a strike one and
- 1:35one. And Legros said after the game that he didn't
- 1:38have full control of the ball. He juggled it.
- 2:23The outfield for the White Sox. left field, Jeff
- 2:28Levin in center, and Claudio Washington in right.
- 2:31Now, Greg Pryor goes into the right side dugout.
- 5:39It's 20 to 5. The 11th inning, but that was not
- 6:50the case. Here's a pitcher pass ball rolling
- 6:52in. club a lot different ball club this year
- 7:31than it was a year ago obviously last year's
- 7:34club different off the 11th inning Here's the
- 10:47pitch, and it's a strike. Two strikes on the
- 10:53batter. He and Frank Canan, another left -hander,
- 10:55had great success against the Chicago organization
- 10:59under various owners. Here's the pitchers, a
- 11:01swing and a pop -up. game and game one went 0
- 11:13-2. Woodharp is making his 16th start of the
- 11:18year, the seventh on the road. Ranked in the
- 11:21top five in the American League and earned run
- 11:23average at 2 .41. his next four ball game. Now
- 11:55he's come back to win four in a row. Here's a
- 11:57pitch up high of all. And four of his five losses
- 12:04this year. Here's the pitchers. They swing and
- 12:07a foul off their fair ball. Porter has it through
- 12:10as he got it. The ball was off of Washington,
- 12:13but it went fair. It did not go foul. As it hit
- 12:17him as he came out of the box. A fire rule. It
- 12:19was a fair ball and Porter got it and threw him
- 12:21out. out two to three. And there's two down.
- 12:27Woodruff has won eight, lost five. As we mentioned,
- 12:29he's won four in a row, then lost four in a row.
- 12:32Now he's come back to win four out of five. Here's
- 12:34the pitch to Chet Lemon. It's outside of all.
- 12:37Chet 0 for 5 in game one. They really wrapped
- 12:39him up. They forced him three different times
- 12:42to round to the third baseman. Two other times
- 12:45they struck him out. Here's the pitch. And it's
- 12:47a fastball on the outside corner for a strike.
- 12:49One and one. I mean, I've heard. There's a swing
- 13:30and a pop -up to the right side. So they're three
- 14:18back. Texas playing tonight against Toronto.
- 14:21Right now the White Sox are three and a half
- 14:23back. And they'll either be two and a half back
- 14:25or four and a half back when the afternoon is
- 14:26over. Darryl Porter, who got the game -winning
- 14:29hit, the only hit that LeGros gave up, but it
- 14:31was a single to right after a walk and a sacrifice,
- 14:33and it won the ballgame, leads it off here in
- 14:35the second inning. Check swing of the ball inside.
- 15:04In the Eastern Division, Baltimore now has moved
- 15:06into second place ahead of the Yankees, six and
- 15:08a half behind the Red Sox. The Yankees are seven
- 15:12back. Milwaukee has a chance to gain a half a
- 15:14game. They lost the first half. Now, what time?
- 16:26San Diego has jumped out in front of the Phillies,
- 16:282 -0 at the end of one. With nobody out on the
- 16:41leadoff walk. A leadoff walk twice in game one
- 16:45resulted in a run for Kansas City. They tied
- 16:48it up with a leadoff walk in the seventh and
- 16:49won the ball game after a leadoff walk. in the
- 16:5111th. Al Collins the batter 0 for 4 in game 1.
- 16:54Came in as a doubleheader hitting 258 with 2
- 16:56homers and 26 RBIs. A pitch to him is a ball
- 17:00out. The run was on, and he probably went after
- 18:16ball three. It was way inside on him, and he
- 18:18fouled. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights,
- 18:42and then Minnesota next weekend, included by
- 18:44a doubleheader next Sunday. Right -hander ready.
- 18:47Here's the two -on -pitch inside ball three.
- 18:51Shooter has lost two of the last three men that
- 18:53he has faced, and he's in jeopardy here of walking
- 18:55talent. Here's the pitch, flinging a fly ball
- 19:11to left. Bannister's moving over. He's there.
- 19:14He's got it. One out. So Collins flying out of
- 19:18the 3 -1 pitch. And the batter is the shortstop,
- 19:20Freddie Patek. 1 -0 for three in game one. Came
- 19:23into the doubleheader, hitting .266 with a homer
- 19:25and 24 RBIs. two ballgames. Reporter is second.
- 21:40for one in game one. Carroll, a 191 hitter with
- 21:46two RBIs. Right -handed hitter outfield, playing
- 21:55in shallow and to go to the opposite field. Well,
- 21:58the double play is in order here. Shuler working
- 22:04out of his set. Here's the pitch. Call strike
- 22:07at the inside part of the play. Wisely was taking
- 22:11that first pitch after the two walks here in
- 22:13the inning. Royals now in the last two innings
- 22:16of that two -man on. Oh, the first and the second.
- 22:20Right -hander out of the stretch. Looks to second.
- 22:22Here's the one -strike pitch. There's a swing
- 22:24and a ground. It is short. Kessinger has it.
- 22:26Goes to second for one. There'll be no relay.
- 22:28And they get the middle man for the second out.
- 22:30There are runners at first and third now with
- 22:32two outs as Patek is forced out six to four.
- 22:38Porter goes to third, and Willie Wilson, the
- 22:41rookie, is the batter. He struck out his first
- 22:43time up when he tried to punt with two strikes
- 22:46on it. Jimmy Pearsall was surprised he tried
- 22:55to do it in the first game with a one -two pitch.
- 22:57Brought his bat back in time, and he tried to
- 22:59do it this time, and he was out. Here's the pitchers
- 23:01swinging a grounder to Lamar Johnson at first.
- 23:03Steps to the bag as he retires the side. Talk
- 23:29to your Clark Lift of Chicago dealer in Rosemont,
- 23:32where lift truck service is the name of the game.
- 23:34That's Clark Lift of Chicago, the lift truck
- 23:36people. to face Gale twice and beat them twice.
- 25:38Hassler, they're 1 -0 against. He did not get
- 25:40the decision in game two. Here's a swing and
- 25:42a grounder right side. Carroll has it on a short
- 25:44hop as he charges it, and on the play, Nordhagen
- 25:46goes to third. So Lamar grounds out 4 -3, but
- 25:50he kept the ball on the right side of the infield,
- 25:52allowing the runner to go to third, where he's
- 25:54there with one hour, and the sacrifice fly is
- 25:58in order as Bill Naharati steps up. Billy, the
- 26:01designated hitter here in game two. It is 2 -51
- 26:04with five homers and 25 RBIs coming into the
- 26:07doubleheader. Went one for four in game one.
- 26:11It was a big hit because it put Lamar Johnson
- 26:13in scoring position at that particular time and
- 26:15allowed him to score the second run of the ballgame.
- 26:23Left hander ready. Here's the pitch and it's
- 26:25inside of all. So the White Sox have faced Gail
- 26:29Hasler and now Squidorff twice apiece. Here's
- 26:37the pitch. Here's a swing and a fly ball deep
- 26:39right center field. It'll score the run. Nordhagen
- 26:42tagging up. Collins has it. And the White Sox
- 26:45take the lead 1 -0 as Nordhagen crosses the plate.
- 26:57So now Haradny drives in his 26th run of the
- 26:59year. And the Sox are on the board here in game
- 27:03two, 1 -0. That's what you want to see. Get that
- 27:09runner over when he's at second base. A sacrifice
- 27:13fly brought him home. 11 and lost 13 ones on
- 31:09this ballgame. The White Sox are 10 and 10. The
- 31:13White Sox are 0 and 5 at extra inning play this
- 31:16year. Right -hander ready. Here's the pitch.
- 31:17And it's inside of all. You're in tune with WMAQ,
- 31:22Chicago, Illinois, 5 o 'clock in the windy...
- 31:55on pitch inside of all. Milwaukee going to be
- 31:59kicking themselves. They win 10 in a row and
- 32:01they don't even put one game on Boston because
- 32:03they won nine in a row. And they get beat. But
- 32:06Boston did too. Here's the 2 -1 delivery. Here's
- 32:09the fling of the grounder to Pryor. After the
- 32:59open date Wednesday, Turtles just fouled it off
- 33:02one and one. The Twins will be in here. Well,
- 33:06first off Thursday night, it'll be Italian -American
- 33:08night against Seattle. Right -hander ready. Here's
- 33:11the 1 -1 pitch and a tie of all. And the Twins
- 33:16open up Friday night. It will be Croatian night.
- 33:18Flags, dancers, costumes, usual fireworks display
- 33:22after the ballgame Friday. Right -hander ready.
- 33:25Here's the pitch. The swing of the grounder fouled.
- 33:44Previously rained out game against Minnesota,
- 33:46but they'll be in here for four, Friday night,
- 33:48Saturday, and doubleheader Sunday. Now time is
- 33:52called. Saturday is a night game, WLS team night.
- 33:57All teenagers in for half price. Here's the pitch,
- 34:01and it's low of all. Rich Reddick. It's a 3 -2
- 34:15pitch. Swing and a grounder to second. Pryor
- 34:17is there. He's got it. Waits for Lamar to get
- 34:19to first and throws him out. Three up and three
- 34:21down. as Greg Pryor leads it off. Greg went one
- 35:42for three in game number one. Greg came into
- 35:46the ballgame hitting .268 with four RBIs batting
- 35:49for the first time here. Here's the first pitch
- 35:53to him and it's a called strike. He's the number
- 35:57nine hitter in the order. He'll be followed by
- 35:59Bannister and Washington. Paul Swiddorf delivers
- 36:03inside. It's the first game. Here's the pitch.
- 36:15Outside of all. Kansas City on the opener, 3
- 36:18-2. Milwaukee just split a doubleheader with
- 36:20Cleveland. They got two more in the ninth, and
- 36:22they beat the Indians 4 -1. Augustine over Paxton.
- 36:25There's a swing and a fly ball to left. Coquette's
- 36:28coming in. He's got it. And there's one out.
- 36:30Gregg got good wood on the ball, but right at
- 36:33the left fielder, Tom Coquette. Milwaukee gained
- 36:42a half a game on the Boston Red Sox today by
- 36:45gaining that split. So Milwaukee's seven and
- 36:47a half back, so they've got a big punch -up.
- 36:53In the second, third, and fourth spot in the
- 36:56American League East, Boston now leading Baltimore
- 36:58by six and a half. The Yankees are seven back,
- 37:01and Milwaukee's seven and a half back. Manager
- 37:04in the hole, 0 -1, and the next pitch is outside
- 37:06of all. One ball, one strike. Popped up to Patek
- 37:11at short. Leading off the bottom of the first.
- 37:14Here's the pitch. Outside. Ball two. White Sox
- 37:17got their two runs in the second on a double
- 37:19by Nordhagen. Lamar Johnson. Grounded out to
- 37:21second. Nordhagen taking third. And now Haradny
- 37:24drove him home with a sacrifice fly. And then
- 37:26Sonner home hit a homer. 2 -1 pitch. Swing and
- 37:28aim. Foul ball down the left side. Would have
- 37:38been in there for extra bases. as that has been
- 37:40fair. So the count evens up to Allen. It's two
- 37:48and two. White Sox trying to gain a split and
- 37:55move back within one game of 500. If the White
- 38:00Sox are able to gain a split, California would
- 38:02move within one game of first. Left hander ready.
- 38:05Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a blooper
- 38:06down the left side. If it drops there, it's going
- 38:09to be out of foul ball. And Brett Guyby almost
- 38:12came up with a fine play. Top tech. Over there
- 38:16with him. Not to say if it dropped it could be
- 38:22for extra bases, but it went foul and Brett made
- 38:25a valiant effort after the ball. Go for it. Empty
- 38:29kit. No doubt about it. Plays the game hard.
- 38:34Two balls, two strikes. The way it should be
- 38:35played. Minnesota just won their sixth in a row.
- 38:41The Twins are hot. They beat the Tigers 8 -4.
- 38:51And Detroit really in a slump. Here's a pitch
- 38:54low of all, 3 -2. Tigers now have lost seven
- 39:00in a row. Here's the 3 -2 delivery. Washington.
- 39:10Off of himself, but he was in fair territory
- 39:14when the ball hit him. Got out in front of the
- 39:17plate and he was thrown out by the catcher. The
- 39:20Cubs, losers of three of their last four. Houston
- 39:23tonight. Cubs expected to go with Lamp against
- 39:27Dixon. Waddell, 0 for 3 for the afternoon. Here's
- 39:40the pitch. Swing and a miss. Big match today
- 39:44for the White Sox. It's in Nordhagen. Two for
- 39:46three. And Satterholm. Three for six. Home run
- 39:51and two RBIs. Left -hander out of the stretch.
- 39:58Here's the pitch. Outside of all. You know, next
- 40:03week out here, between games, that doubleheader
- 40:05will be the White Sox pitch, hit, and run divisional
- 40:07championship. The winners advance, and hopefully
- 40:14they'll make it to the All -Star Game in San
- 40:16Diego. Here's a toss over to first, the runner
- 40:18back. You'll hear them all on WMAQ Radio, Monday
- 40:23night, Tuesday night, and Thursday night against
- 40:24Seattle. Friday night, Saturday night, and a
- 40:27doubleheader Sunday against Minnesota. Here's
- 40:29the pitch. Inside of all. We're scheduled for
- 40:33a three -game series next weekend, Friday night,
- 40:35Saturday night, Sunday afternoon. And then with
- 40:38the make -up game, the White Sox are either going
- 40:40to play a day -night doubleheader on Saturday.
- 40:43Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a long shot.
- 41:16after losing a tough one in the first. They've
- 41:18come out moving here in the second. Two runs
- 41:21in the second, now a two -run homer by Claude
- 41:23Ellis, first as a member of the White Sox. Here's
- 42:07the pitch. High. Ball two. Lemon looking for
- 42:10his first hit of the afternoon. 0 for 6. Boy,
- 42:14you lose a tough game like that and have a tough
- 42:16left -hander like Slidorf to face. Here's the
- 42:19pitch inside. Ball three. You've got to feel
- 42:21fortunate that you've jumped out in front early.
- 42:27One of the truly fine gentlemen in the game of
- 42:30baseball, Paul Slidorf. and treated him not so
- 42:34gentlemanly as Dwellen takes a strike, and Marty
- 42:36Patton, a right -hander, is up with the bullpen.
- 42:41Also, Steve Mangori, a left -hander. Here's a
- 42:43pitch outside of all he walked in. After a try,
- 42:48he got good wood on the ball and hit it right
- 42:50at him. He'll cut it left. A walk, a home run,
- 42:52and a walk. He's got a big afternoon. He has
- 43:06singled, he's walked, and he has doubled. And
- 43:08he has scored two runs. Officially two for three.
- 43:16Woodhuff ready. Here's the pitch. Fastball. Misses
- 43:20inside. Porter. Thought he had him, so does Woodhuff
- 43:24as he comes down the mound out of the grass looking
- 43:26in. Leading Montreal 5 -0. Here's the pitch.
- 43:38Swing and a miss. He had a big cut. L .A.'s got
- 43:42a win just to remain within five of the Giants.
- 43:44It's already shut out the Mets 3 -0. Game one
- 43:48of a doubleheader. Here the White Sox trying
- 43:51to gain a split lead 4 -0 after losing 3 -2 at
- 43:5411. Left -hander out of the stretch. Here's the
- 43:561 -1 pitch. Swing and a miss. A big cut again.
- 43:59Strike two. Baltimore has defeated Oakland. Minnesota
- 44:03has defeated Detroit. California has defeated
- 44:07the Yankees. Seattle upended Boston. Milwaukee
- 44:09and Cleveland have split a doubleheader. This
- 44:11is the only game in the American League going
- 44:12on right now. Toronto will be at Texas tonight.
- 44:15Here's the 1 -2 pitch. Here's a swing and a foul
- 44:17ball coming back to the right side. Ketcher giving
- 44:20chase. And it's going to be out of play. Just
- 44:24a couple of rows back. Porter reached in to get
- 44:26it, but not handled it. And Nordhagen remains
- 44:31alive in Chicago. Well, a lot of little things
- 44:38could have won that ball game in the first. This
- 44:42game is, as always been said, a game of inches.
- 44:50The Royals prevailed 3 -2. Now the White Sox
- 44:52trying to come back and split. Runner at first,
- 44:55two runs are in here in the inning, one out.
- 44:57Here's the pitch. Swing and a foul, he just got
- 44:59a piece of it. I'll tell you one thing, Wayne
- 45:01is not getting cheated. He is getting his cuts
- 45:03up there. White Sox tomorrow go with Cusick against
- 45:10Terrence. Scull goes against Mitchell on Tuesday
- 45:13and Barrios against Cole on Thursday. That means
- 45:20Kravick goes against Minnesota on Friday. Left
- 45:26-hander ready. Here's the 1 -2 pitch. Here's
- 45:28a swing and a pop -up on the interior. They've
- 45:30got Jan. Brett, the third baseman there, he's
- 45:32got it. Two out. So Nordhagen pops up. There's
- 45:38two down. And the batter is Lamar Johnson, who's
- 45:40rounded out to second his first time up. Lamar,
- 45:43one for five of a doubleheader. Marty Patton
- 45:50continues to warm up down the right side. I think
- 45:52the Sea Lamar put one of those seats to the left.
- 45:574 -0, the White Sox lead it. Fedorov out of the
- 46:02stretch. Here's the pitch. Outside of all, a
- 46:05sacrifice fly by Naharati, a home run by Satterholm,
- 46:09and a two -run homer by Claudel Washington that's
- 46:11accounted for all four runs. The Sox have already
- 46:15scored twice as many runs here. Two and two -third
- 46:19innings of game two that they did in game one.
- 46:25Woodruff out of the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 46:28Breaking ball. Misses outside. Ball two. Manny
- 46:33Minoso coaching over at first. Bobby Knopf at
- 46:36third. Chet Lemon at first base with two down
- 46:39here in the third. Left -hander running. Here's
- 46:45the pitch. Last ball. for a strike. LeVar taking
- 46:48all the way. Two balls and a strike. Big right
- 46:58-handed hitting first baseman wait. Here's the
- 47:03pitch. Swing and a foul. Comes back to the upper
- 47:06deck. And the count evens up at 2 -2. Well, let's
- 47:15see. California won by a run. Seattle won by
- 47:17a run. Baltimore won by a run. Kansas City won
- 47:20the first game by a run. Four one -run ballgames
- 47:23in the American League this afternoon. Here's
- 47:25the pitch. Here's a swing and a foul down the
- 47:27right side. Got it up and in, but he swung late
- 47:32on it. One -run game in the National League.
- 47:37Atlanta beating Pittsburgh 8 -7. going on. Dodgers
- 47:43shutting out Montreal 5 -0. San Diego shutting
- 47:46out the Phillies early 3 -0. San Francisco shut
- 47:49out the Mets 3 -0 in Game 1. Here's the 2 -2
- 47:51pitch. Here's a swing and a fly ball. If it stays
- 47:53there, it's going to be out of here going down
- 47:55the left field line. It is a foul ball and it
- 47:58did not get out of here. It goes into the box
- 48:00deep down in the corner. Boy, that ball just
- 48:02died all of a sudden. The wind prevented Poquette
- 48:07from getting that ball like the wind prevented
- 48:09Lamar from getting a three -run homer in Game
- 48:111. Now you like to say they all even up, but
- 48:15I'd sure like to see that ball be fair in that
- 48:17last game. Never would have gone to extra innings.
- 48:32Two balls and two strikes to Lamar. Widorf out
- 48:36of a stretch. Here's the pitch. Half swing and
- 48:38a foul to the left side. 2 ,598 here this afternoon.
- 48:494 -0 -5 -9 -8. We outgrew the Kansas City three
- 48:59-day crowd. Here goes the runner. Here's the
- 49:01pitch. Swing and a grab. Right side of base hit.
- 49:03Here goes Levin going to third. The second baseman
- 49:07wants to cover. And as he did, Lamar singled
- 49:10in the vacated spot. And the lights out. White
- 49:12Sox have runners at first and third with two
- 49:14out and Naharati the batter. Nahar drove in the
- 49:19first White Sox run with a sacrifice fly his
- 49:21last time up. 112 ,181 for the series. the city
- 49:46a couple of weeks ago. Here's the pitch. High
- 49:54of all. The Royals drew 97 ,000. With a three
- 50:03-game set against the White Sox, and here in
- 50:05the three -date, the White Sox draw 112 ,000
- 50:09-plus. Here's a pitch outside, ball three. A
- 50:11bad one would load the bases for Soderholm. To
- 50:15the White Sox, to 15 ,181 more people than Kansas
- 50:19City, plus the fact all the games here televised
- 50:23locally. Here's the 3 -0 pitch. He takes a strike.
- 50:283 -1. Runners at first and third, two outs, two
- 50:34runs in. The Sox leading 4 -0 here in game two.
- 50:40Winner of bottom of the stretch, here's the pitch.
- 50:43All strike two. So the count is full. Lamar Johnson
- 50:48will be off at first. Lemon will be cautious
- 50:52down the line at third with a right -handed hitter
- 50:54up. A 3 -2 pitch tossed over to first, the runner
- 50:58back. Royals won the opener 3 -2. Now Porter
- 51:03wants to have a conversation with Spudor. Why
- 51:07you feel like you're in real trouble when you
- 51:09lose the first game. In the light of a false
- 51:13foot arc pitching against you in game two. And
- 51:16Kansas City conversely has to feel pretty good
- 51:18about that. The light dodge has jumped on the
- 51:21Arlington Heights product for two in the second.
- 51:23Here's two in the third. That runner's at first
- 51:26and third. The 3 -2 count with two outs. Here's
- 51:29the pitch. Here's a swing and a pop -up. He got
- 51:31jammed. First baseman coming over. Tector coming
- 51:33over. The first baseman has it. And I think he's
- 51:35won it ball four. So, foot arc gets out of it
- 51:40without any more problems with the light dodge.
- 51:41The White Sox come up with two runs on two hits.
- 51:44No errors, two left, a big blow, a two -run homer
- 51:47by Claudel Washington. We're at the end of three.
- 51:49I'm Lorne Brown, Harry Terry, and Jimmy Pearsall.
- 51:51We'll be along in a minute. It's the White Sox
- 51:534, Kansas City nothing. Ooh, you son of a...
- 54:49The White Sox are well over the 600 ,000. steps
- 55:31into their starting rotation. And really helps.
- 55:36Two balls and a strike. Full foul. And the count
- 55:40is even. Two and two. The Giants have got a blue
- 55:53pitching. Their game ought to be over by now.
- 56:07A good hitter against right -handed pitching.
- 56:10Had a big base hit when he singled in the right
- 56:12center to score a run in the 11th. Two balls,
- 56:18two strikes. Now the delivery, a little bit low.
- 56:23All three. Chris Knapp of the California Angels
- 56:28beat the Yankees 3 -2. The Yankees drop to third
- 56:31place. I think he makes the play better to his
- 56:49left than he does to his right. You're right
- 56:51there. He doesn't pick the ball off the bat as
- 56:53quick. You know, one thing about Earl Weaver,
- 56:56his ball club looked like they were just going
- 56:58to be out of it. They were there last. They even
- 57:00called the game with the sun out. But he keeps
- 57:03that ball club battling. They don't go on that
- 57:05seal that low. They are now 12 games above the
- 57:13500 mark. That's how far they've come. Miller's
- 57:23been doing it today primarily with a change of
- 57:27speeds and breaking balls. Not as fast as we've
- 57:32seen him on other occasions. One ball, no strikes,
- 57:35the pitch. It's just away from Nordhagen. It'll
- 57:39be a fast ball. Nordhagen took his eye off that
- 57:41ball and looked at the runner. As he did, the
- 57:44ball popped out of his gloves. So, you know,
- 57:48when you've got one catcher... And a guy who
- 57:50is just learning to catch it makes it pretty
- 57:51hard because he hasn't caught in about a month
- 57:53or so. Well, they got a good one down in the
- 57:58minor leagues if they ever want to bring him
- 57:59up. Mike Colburn. I guess the problem is because
- 58:04he's young, I don't want to bring him up but
- 58:08sit him on the back. Three -quarter arm pitch
- 58:27inside that Collins just didn't get enough out
- 58:30in front of him. He doesn't want to get that
- 58:32pitch there. He wants it outside. Saunders two
- 58:35away now. Here's Sonny Popek. Popek wants his
- 58:46first time. He's been hit for some of the series.
- 58:52Good fastball. That's the best he's done. He
- 58:54came over the top with it. strike to nothing.
- 59:03A runner in scoring position. A wide breaking
- 59:11curve. Looks like his curve ball is just a little
- 59:14lazy and it seems to sail on him outside but
- 59:16it isn't breaking down, it's flat. Talk about
- 59:34being away from the plate. Look where Pawtuck
- 59:36stands. He's way away from the plate and goes
- 59:37into the ball. Of course, like Charlie Lowe's
- 59:39creatures, but generally you don't get that far
- 59:41away. But Lemon, if he'd move even half that
- 59:43far away, I think he'd have more arm movement
- 59:45and better swings at the ball. He's going to
- 59:48tip the ball off. That's right. He's getting
- 59:50jammed so much. And he hasn't changed yet. The
- 59:53ball to the strike. Pawtuck winning. The pitch.
- 1:00:00Follow back. Into the upper deck. When you stand
- 1:00:15away from the plate like this, that good overhand
- 1:00:16hard slider down in the way is a tough pitch
- 1:00:18for them to hit. And that's what he may try to
- 1:00:20show him right here. 2 -2 flip. spraying some
- 1:02:04power. That time he got all of it. The first
- 1:02:05time it just looked like he hit it as well and
- 1:02:07it just barely got in the front row. But it looks
- 1:02:09like he's looking for his pitch. He's getting
- 1:02:11it and he's hitting it. And his feeling in the
- 1:02:14first game was just unbelievable. It wasn't his
- 1:02:17fault we didn't win that first ball game. It
- 1:02:20was because of him we were in it with a chance
- 1:02:21to win it. Finally lost in the 11th inning. 10
- 1:02:26hours prior had the fastball as well. I think
- 1:02:30that's the first time this year the White Sox
- 1:02:33Second time. Here's a picture curve strike off.
- 1:02:45Georgia hit two homers in one game earlier this
- 1:02:47year. It's the only other time. This might be
- 1:02:51the first game in some time that the White Sox
- 1:02:55have hit more than one home run. They have three
- 1:02:58so far today. There's Pryor, a high pop fly on
- 1:03:02the infield. First place for the hurdle is there.
- 1:03:06Makes the catch. You know, he hit that ball prior
- 1:03:10to where it was, but it was in fair territory.
- 1:03:13You know, these fans can really pump a ball club
- 1:03:15up. I have never seen anything like it. Instead
- 1:03:17of dying now after we lose a tough one in the
- 1:03:19first game, the fans are more excited than the
- 1:03:21players, and they know they've got to play well
- 1:03:23for them. Boy, Tony, you lose a heartbreaker
- 1:03:26like that first game, and you have to face an
- 1:03:28old hex -like split car. It'd be easy a little
- 1:03:31bit to be able to down. But the White Sox have
- 1:03:34bounced right back, and they have a 5 -0 lead
- 1:03:37now, and we're in the bottom of the fourth. Here's
- 1:03:41Bannister, a high fly. Senefiel will be caught.
- 1:03:46Willie Wilson takes it. One run, one hit. Go
- 1:03:49ahead. WMAQ. Where you red and white, WMAQ is
- 1:03:59going to make you rich bumper stickers. We want
- 1:04:01thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to you.
- 1:04:03We have over $200 ,000 in cash and prizes, and
- 1:04:06we're giving it all away. For a chance to be
- 1:04:09a winner, pick up your free red and white WMAQ
- 1:04:12bumper stickers from any participating True Value
- 1:04:14hardware store in the greater Chicago area, and
- 1:04:17stick it on your car's rear bumper. If the Q
- 1:04:19truck stops you, you win. It's that easy. Stick
- 1:04:22it and win with WMAQ. Hi, everybody. I'm Jimmy
- 1:04:25Pearsall for Emory Air Freight. Emory doesn't
- 1:04:27just go to major cities. They also go to the
- 1:04:29minors. So we don't have a first baseman. Lamar
- 1:05:28Johnson is not on the field as yet. California
- 1:05:34defeated the Yankees 3 -2, as Harry said before,
- 1:05:36napped the winning pitcher. Seattle finally broke
- 1:05:39Boston's win streak. I think it was at 10, 3
- 1:05:42-2 today. The Cubs play at Houston tonight. Baltimore
- 1:05:47defeated Oakland 2 -1. Minnesota continues to...
- 1:05:52Detroit, they beat them three straight, eight
- 1:05:54to four. Cincinnati, they beat them to St. Louis,
- 1:05:57four to two. Julio Martinez lost his second game
- 1:06:01in a row. All right, Lamar Johnson has returned
- 1:06:05to the field and we're ready to go here. We're
- 1:06:09on the top of the fifth inning, Carroll leading
- 1:06:10it off. Shiller's set. Her ball inside at high,
- 1:06:16ball one. One ball. I hope we can get six innings
- 1:06:20out of him. Good six innings. I have a signal
- 1:06:24given. Seattle will be here tomorrow night. Curves.
- 1:06:28One on. Popped up on the infield. That's going
- 1:06:30to be easy. Cussinger under the ball. Makes the
- 1:06:33catch. One man out. When Shuler comes side after
- 1:06:36these guys that don't play very much like Carroll,
- 1:06:38their butt goes out and the bat goes oop. And
- 1:06:40a little pop fly. Here now is Willie Wilson.
- 1:06:44He's nothing out of two. Wilson, who I'm surprised
- 1:06:48doesn't butt more, has become a switch hitter,
- 1:06:50but all he has to do is get the ball on the ground
- 1:06:52and he almost beats it out all the time. One
- 1:06:55of the fastest men in all of baseball. Here's
- 1:07:01a picture of the fastball high. One ball, no
- 1:07:04strikes. One away here. Ben Harden, the orchestra
- 1:07:09man, is here today. Great rhythm you have, Harry.
- 1:07:19He gives a little band. Huh? Are you kidding
- 1:07:23me? Two balls, no strikes. Not a pitcher, it
- 1:07:29is. I don't think he's a left -handed hitter.
- 1:07:33No, he isn't. He's just teaching him to be a
- 1:07:36left -handed hitter. He's got that kind of a
- 1:07:37swing. I hope I can hit it. He's got the kind
- 1:07:40of a swing. He's just trying to bounce the ball
- 1:07:41on the ground so he can beat it out. Two balls
- 1:07:44and a strike. He was going to bust. Pitch was
- 1:07:49low and inside. Ball three. Shuler knowing this
- 1:07:52is just trying to get it over, but it just won't.
- 1:07:54Sometimes it'll happen that way. Three balls
- 1:07:56and a strike. One man out, nobody on. Five to
- 1:08:02nothing and save it a white shot. Now the fifth.
- 1:08:08Swings and he pulls the ball foul. And the count
- 1:08:11is full at three and two. Oh, boy, that guy in
- 1:08:13the left field reaches and he's got all those
- 1:08:15cups, about 150 of them, standing up in the air.
- 1:08:17Look at them bending. Whoops. Three balls, two
- 1:08:22strikes. Here's the putt. Walked it for all four.
- 1:08:28He had to walk him. He didn't want to do that
- 1:08:31because he will bother you. You run everywhere.
- 1:08:35That's the fourth walk off Schiller. The fans
- 1:08:44are cheering for anything to fall. They're piling
- 1:08:46up those beer cups in a funnel, as it were. A
- 1:08:51runner at first, one out, is Sam Phuket. He's
- 1:08:55nothing out of two. Flip over to first base,
- 1:08:58the runner back. All the other baseball is over
- 1:09:04with the exception of the bank game. Again, Wilson
- 1:09:08gets back. Willie Wilson. One strike and nothing.
- 1:09:40One man out. We're in the fifth. Now the stretch.
- 1:09:48The pitch. Way high and wide. It dropped, Harry.
- 1:09:52Some of it. A ball and a strike. Poke test. Hitting
- 1:09:59.236. Good left -hand batter. Now the delivery.
- 1:10:05Here it is. There goes the runner's foot off.
- 1:10:07Long drive. on second base and had to re -tag
- 1:10:28the bag and then go back. Lemon made a good throw
- 1:10:31off balance. Any other runner might have been
- 1:10:32out. They're claiming that he did not touch the
- 1:10:37bag going back, but it's not allowed. I can tell
- 1:10:40them that he did. Let's see now. They're going
- 1:10:43to throw back there off the rubber. Schumer is
- 1:10:48set. They're waiting for Brett to get in there.
- 1:10:51Now he's waiting for Brett to get in there. Bob
- 1:11:01Lemon, the manager, coming out to talk to Joe
- 1:11:04Brinkman. Finally, Brinkman saw him, tagged the
- 1:11:13bag, and retreated. Lemon is saved, but you were
- 1:11:17standing over by third base. It's an awfully
- 1:11:20tough call over out there. Suarez, two men out.
- 1:11:36Wilson to leave. Pitch to Brett is a little bit
- 1:11:42high. Again, Wilson makes a false start. As if
- 1:11:47he's going. One ball, no strike. I'd like to
- 1:11:52see Shuler just concentrate on Brett because
- 1:11:54he can hit the ball on the ballpark. You've got
- 1:11:55to make good pictures on him. Here's the delivery.
- 1:11:59There goes the runner. Swung on, fouled. Out
- 1:12:01of play. And the count is even up at a ball and
- 1:12:04a strike. Willie Wilson. on a little bit of show
- 1:12:07out there. He can fly. He can really run. And
- 1:12:13Brett has been hitting the ball at second base
- 1:12:15seven times or so almost in this series. Four
- 1:12:18to three. And now that fastball was blown away
- 1:12:21and Brett fouled it off to the left side. If
- 1:12:23he can keep it out there, that's a good pitch.
- 1:12:261 -1 delivery. There goes the runner. The pitch,
- 1:12:30the throw. Here he is. Houston gets outrun the
- 1:12:43ball. Florida got a man in scoring position now.
- 1:12:47Two balls to the strike. All the American League
- 1:12:51baseball is over with the exception of Toronto
- 1:12:53at Texas. They start in about an hour and a half.
- 1:12:59Here we're in the second game in the fifth inning.
- 1:13:02White Sox leading five to nothing. Shuler gets
- 1:13:08ready to pitch. Watch the all today for Los Angeles.
- 1:13:17He's now six and six. Quick to the loser. He's
- 1:13:20three and six. The Dodgers are creeping up now.
- 1:13:23Three balls and a strike on Brett. Here's the
- 1:13:28pitch. Swings and he fouls it off his foot. That's
- 1:13:32a full count. Three balls, two strikes. Two outs.
- 1:13:38Five to nothing. White Sox. Ball game in the
- 1:13:42fifth. Well, that really hurt. Hit him right
- 1:13:44flush. And Shuler keeping the ball down good
- 1:13:47to him now. He'll want to throw it out of the
- 1:13:50way if he can or in and away. It doesn't make
- 1:13:52any difference. He's got to keep it down. There
- 1:13:56he goes. Two strikes. Willie Wilson will lead
- 1:14:05at second base. Now the stretch. Wilson. Going
- 1:14:21two bases today. Big hole in right center field
- 1:14:25now. Washington has moved over towards the line.
- 1:14:28Lemon is still two steps towards left center,
- 1:14:31so there's a big gap in right center. Play ball,
- 1:14:34two strikes. Wilson now a swipe, 26 bases. There's
- 1:14:40a stretch by Kuehler, the putt. A bouncing...
- 1:15:00is saluting the families of America. It's our
- 1:15:03way of saying thanks. here. Ah, the signal given.
- 1:16:21Look at that. Boy, he was jammed. He had a little
- 1:16:24roller right back to the pitcher. Easy out. One
- 1:16:29gone. Here's Lemon. He's nothing for the day.
- 1:16:36Seems like for a week the poor guys are getting
- 1:16:39nothing but jammers. Well, good news for our
- 1:16:42good friend Lee Stern. His Chicago Sting beat
- 1:16:46the trike. Two to nothing. There's the pitch
- 1:16:51to Lemon. Curve strike. Boy, that's the one he's
- 1:16:54got to hit because that fastball is on top of
- 1:16:56him. There's a breaking ball down the middle.
- 1:17:26double hit to hit that ball inside the line.
- 1:17:28I'm glad he did because that put the runner on
- 1:17:30second. And brings up Nordhagen to double the
- 1:17:34right center in the second. Popped up in the
- 1:17:36third. Five to nothing in favor of the White
- 1:17:39Sox. The San Francisco Giants are going for a
- 1:17:43double dip. Here's the pitch. Kansas City has
- 1:18:12scored 276 runs this year. We have scored 246
- 1:18:15runs going into this ballgame. So we've scored
- 1:18:17a fair run, too. Hey, Rocky, I bet my pinto gets
- 1:19:17better mileage than your pinto, yeah. Tell me,
- 1:19:19what do you got in that thing? Yeah, well, I
- 1:19:21got a new set of champion plugs. Oh, wow. Hey,
- 1:19:24I got a... Wait, I just remembered I got to get
- 1:19:25a headband. If they can win it, they'll be two
- 1:20:46and a half out. The White Sox, going into this
- 1:20:50ballgame, trail by three and a half games. If
- 1:20:52they can win it, they'll be two and a half out.
- 1:20:55A one -strike pitch. Breaking ball on the inside
- 1:20:58corner for a strike and a beauty. That time,
- 1:21:00Shuler came over the top. Bannister's in left
- 1:21:03field. Two strikes and no balls. He got a breaking
- 1:21:28ball pretty high as the doc goes out to talk
- 1:21:30to him now. The trainer, Charlie Stad, wants
- 1:21:34to see that hand. Looks like it's his fingers.
- 1:21:40Bob Levin is going to walk out and talk to him
- 1:21:41right now. But that ball really hurt. He had
- 1:21:44him two strikes and no balls. Came in with a
- 1:21:46breaking ball. That hurtle lying right back at
- 1:21:49him. It hit right on his glove, but I don't think
- 1:21:52it hit in the glove. It hit on the top of it.
- 1:21:57Los Angeles has defeated Montreal 5 -0. San Diego
- 1:22:01defeated Philadelphia 3 -0. And, oh, check that.
- 1:22:04They're in the seventh inning in that ballgame.
- 1:22:06Cincinnati won 4 -2. San Francisco won the first
- 1:22:11game, and it looks like they're going to take
- 1:22:12him out of there. He doesn't want to come out,
- 1:22:15but it looks like he might have broken something
- 1:22:17in his hand. And the trainer wants to take him
- 1:22:20into the dugout and get some ice on it in a hurry.
- 1:22:23And that might mean somebody else is going to
- 1:22:25come in to pitch. And that's going to be all
- 1:22:27for Shuler. Then a sacrifice fly to right by
- 1:23:03Naha Rodney for one run. Then Soderholm hit a
- 1:23:06home run just in the front row of the left field
- 1:23:08seat for the second run of the ballgame. Then
- 1:23:11in the third inning, after Pryor lined out, Bannister
- 1:23:16walked. Willoughby will come in now, and he'll
- 1:23:18warm up. He'll have all the time he wants. Claudel
- 1:23:22Washington then hit a high curveball for a home
- 1:23:25run. hit to lose your ball game. He's hit 44
- 1:24:16innings, given up 35 hits, 13 runs, 12 on the
- 1:24:23run, one home run, six bases on ball. He has
- 1:24:28struck out 17, has hit two batters. Willoughby,
- 1:24:32a side -armer who picked for Boston the last
- 1:24:34few years, has been outstanding. He throws a
- 1:24:37side -arm thinker, the right -handers, he can
- 1:24:39really make those guys bail out with that curveball.
- 1:25:57you by WMAQ Radio, NBC, where they'll make Chicago,
- 1:26:02they'll make you rich, WMAQ. So Willoughby gets
- 1:26:06all the time in the world to throw. The lineup
- 1:26:10today, especially in this ballgame, is Nort Higgins
- 1:26:15behind the plate. Naha Rodney has been the Iron
- 1:26:17Man. He's caught pretty near every ballgame and
- 1:26:19has done a whale of a job. Washington. about
- 1:26:26something but the sun The White Sox are leading
- 1:28:205 -0. field for a base hit. Lemon up with it.
- 1:29:17McRae reached for a breaking ball and hit it
- 1:29:19by Kessinger on the line. Kissed by him. About
- 1:29:22a foot more and he had a double play. He had
- 1:29:25gone 0 for 14 in the series before that hit.
- 1:29:32Darryl Porter will step in. Porter won the first
- 1:29:34game with a base hit in the 11th inning. He singles
- 1:29:37in a fourth inning. Walked back in a second.
- 1:29:412 -9 now. That was the third hit of the game
- 1:29:44for Kansas City. Lamar now playing behind a runner.
- 1:29:49He's not holding him a crayon. He's off the line
- 1:29:53and plenty deep. Will it be ready? The right
- 1:29:58-hander delivers from the side. Fastball just
- 1:30:00misses outside. Nordhagen wanted it as he goes
- 1:30:02to the mound. Looks like he wanted a breaking
- 1:30:04ball. There's no other reason for him to go out
- 1:30:08there but to mention it to him that maybe they
- 1:30:10got their indicator wrong. Tremendous gap in
- 1:30:13left center field, even though Bannister is off
- 1:30:17the line and left. Kirtle with a short lead at
- 1:30:20second. Trey lead at first. The pitch. Pass ball
- 1:30:26hits the inside corner. Portage didn't like it
- 1:30:27a bit. One ball and one strike. The Kansas City
- 1:30:31Royals leading the American League West by three
- 1:30:35and a half games now over the White Sox. If the
- 1:30:37White Sox could win this game, they'd go two
- 1:30:39and a half back. looks back at second base kicks
- 1:30:43and delivers fastball swing on hard shot shortstop
- 1:30:46up with it over the fire back 65th double play
- 1:31:11of the year for the White Sox. The opposition
- 1:31:13has had 54. Willoughby now will take his full
- 1:31:18windup. Hurdle down at third. Two out there as
- 1:31:22the White Sox come up with a big double play.
- 1:31:25Al Collins the hitter. Collins has flied to left.
- 1:31:30Both times up. Willoughby ready. Comes sidearm.
- 1:31:34Breaking ball. Just misses low. Nordhagen says
- 1:31:37something to him, but Ford doing a good job behind
- 1:31:40the plate. Alex Ketz is behind the plate. Check
- 1:31:47that. Ketz is doing a good job behind the plate.
- 1:31:49I like that guy with that balloon protector.
- 1:31:51They seem to cover the plate better. One ball
- 1:31:54and a strike as time is called. Willoughby went
- 1:31:57into his motion, but time was called. Bannister
- 1:32:02deep and left, over towards the line. The pitch,
- 1:32:05swung on. He was struck on the middle finger
- 1:32:20of his glove hand, which is his left hand, and
- 1:32:23they're going to take him for x -rays. So that
- 1:32:25ball must have really jarred him. One ball and
- 1:32:27one strike. Two outs. White Sox leading 5 -0
- 1:32:30in the sixth. Will it be ready? Breaking ball,
- 1:32:33swung on. Ground ball, third base. Got her home.
- 1:32:36Up with it. Fires over for the out and a nice
- 1:32:37play by Johnson. So, the White Sox get out of
- 1:32:40a jam on a fine double play. And the score, after
- 1:32:44five and a half innings of play, the Chicago
- 1:32:46White Sox 5, the Kansas City Royals nothing.
- 1:32:49That's my Brewster. Here's the pitch. Curveball
- 1:32:52beneath, right three, five, three, five. This
- 1:32:55is Kurt Gowdy for your Slush List Club Theater.
- 1:32:58You know, although baseball is more than 135
- 1:33:00years old, it wasn't until the game was already
- 1:33:0230 years old that the first curveball was thrown.
- 1:33:05In 1867, a man named William A. Candy Cummings
- 1:33:09tossed that phenomenon to the surprise of the
- 1:33:12batter who was facing him at the time. And we've
- 1:33:14got an equally surprising phenomenon for users
- 1:33:17of forklift trucks. There's a strong competitor
- 1:33:20to a Clark lift truck that costs about half as
- 1:33:23much. This lift truck can deliver thousands of
- 1:33:25hours of reliable service. Clark's strongest
- 1:33:28competitor? A huge Clark. To find out more about
- 1:33:32this phenomenon, see your Clark dealer today.
- 1:33:34Tell him Kurt Gowdy sent you, and you won a straight
- 1:33:37pitch on used Lyft trucks. See your Clark Lyft
- 1:33:41of Chicago dealer for Lyft truck savings that
- 1:33:43are straight down the middle. That's Clark Lyft
- 1:33:45of Chicago, the Lyft truck people. You can take
- 1:34:02a seven -ounce bottle of Stroh's beer out of
- 1:34:05his handy six -pack. When using your wrist, you
- 1:34:08just twist off the top. The rest is easy, especially
- 1:34:12with a great taste of Stroh's beer. So pick up
- 1:34:16some seven -ounce bottles of Stroh's in the eight
- 1:34:19-pack today or tomorrow, sure, and give your
- 1:34:22wrist a good workout. Rodney swung on. Popped
- 1:34:38up. Pawtack at shortstop will take it for the
- 1:34:40out. And now the second baseman's coming over
- 1:34:42in front of him. The nose. Freddie takes it for
- 1:34:44out number one. So on the first pitch, Naha Rodney
- 1:34:47pops the short. They're placing him around towards
- 1:35:30left. Big hole in the right center field. And
- 1:35:35ready. Delivers over to top. What a nice play
- 1:35:38by Porter as he digs it out of the dirt. Two
- 1:35:41balls and one strike. We're in the bottom of
- 1:35:44the sixth inning. The White Sox are leading 5
- 1:35:46-0. They've got five runs on six hits. Three
- 1:35:48of them home runs. There's a pitch in the dirt
- 1:35:51again. The count now goes to three balls and
- 1:35:53one strike. You know, when you get a couple of
- 1:35:56home runs... through with his hips. The 3 -1
- 1:36:06pitch now. Off floor, a breaking ball in the
- 1:36:10dirt. So pass with the count of 3 -1 went to
- 1:36:12the slider and threw it in the dirt. One out
- 1:36:15here and one run. That'll bring to the plate
- 1:36:19Kessinger who has flied to right and he is flying
- 1:36:23to second base. One out here now. The Yankees
- 1:36:31lost 3 -2 and so did the Red Sox. Anything can
- 1:36:38happen right here now, a hit and run. Brett looking
- 1:36:40for anything at third, in on the grass. Pitch
- 1:36:43on the outside corner for the strike. On deck.
- 1:36:47Friar. Kessinger now looks down for anything.
- 1:36:50It could be a hit and run. Adolfo with the count
- 1:36:52of one strike. He's home between first and second.
- 1:36:57Conner home with his lead. Patton at the belt.
- 1:36:59Delivers a fastball that brushes Kessinger back.
- 1:37:08the infield, out on the outfield now. Terrell,
- 1:37:10the second baseman, over by the bag. So is Portek,
- 1:37:13looking for a double play. There goes the runner.
- 1:37:15Just went out and fouled off to the left side.
- 1:37:17Kessinger got a tough pitch to hit and run with.
- 1:37:19It was way outside. And to protect the runner,
- 1:37:22he hit it anywhere he could. And that's what
- 1:37:24you got to do when you're hitting and running.
- 1:37:25You've got to make sure you make contact. A vital
- 1:37:29part of managing is to know what hitters can
- 1:37:31protect the place. I don't think we hit and run
- 1:37:36eight times last year, maybe five times. One
- 1:37:40ball and two strikes on Don Kessinger, the better
- 1:37:42playing a doubleheader. Pat now goes over the
- 1:37:46stretch, looks at first base. The right -hander
- 1:37:48ready, comes to a full stop, picks and delivers
- 1:37:50way outside. The conk goes even at two balls
- 1:37:54and two strikes. White Sox, they hit five to
- 1:37:58nothing. They lost the first game, three to two
- 1:38:00in the 11th inning. Passenger looking again.
- 1:38:03It still could be on right here. Way off the
- 1:38:06bag at third now is Brett. Hurdle, the first
- 1:38:09baseman, holding out against the runner. Soderholm
- 1:38:11with a short lead. There he goes. Pitch one on.
- 1:38:13Boy, that was another bad pitch. That ball was
- 1:38:16high and outside. Passenger just got a piece
- 1:38:18of it. So Soderholm has to come all the way back,
- 1:38:22and his legs must be feeling much better after
- 1:38:24two home runs. Sometimes base hits do a lot for
- 1:38:27him. in place of White. White came out of the
- 1:38:35first game late in the ball game. He must be
- 1:38:37injured too. So both ball clubs have had some
- 1:38:39injuries today. Patton ready. Takes a sign. Delivers.
- 1:38:45Hits one on. Hits it in the right field for a
- 1:38:47base hit. I would like to get out of a double
- 1:39:33play. I'd like to see him squeeze right here.
- 1:39:56down at Bobby Knapp. Kessinger down at Spurs
- 1:40:00with a single to right. The White Sox with a
- 1:40:02chance to pick up another run. Second player
- 1:41:26down at first. Hit swung on, hit out front, second
- 1:41:55base. Carroll over with it. Back to first base
- 1:41:59for a double play. Freddie really fired that
- 1:42:02ball at first base. His cruise was jammed and
- 1:42:04he didn't get out of the box. And that before
- 1:42:06the White Sox come up with one run. License,
- 1:42:40destination charges, and available equipment,
- 1:42:42extra. Chevy Monza, $36 .59. A very stylish little
- 1:42:46number. I'm Jimmy Pearsall for Emory Air Freight.
- 1:43:14If you have a package to deliver, you've got
- 1:43:16to be crazy not to use Emory. Mark Brown and
- 1:43:20Jimmy Pearsall back at Comiskey Park as we go
- 1:43:22to the seventh inning. White Sox leading here,
- 1:43:24game two, six to nothing after losing a heartbreaker
- 1:43:27three to two in the first game. And Jimmy, I'll
- 1:43:30tell you what, I think the fact that this is
- 1:43:32father -son -daughter day may have helped this
- 1:43:35small club a little bit. Nobody had a chance
- 1:43:37to sit through to the clubhouse. They're all
- 1:43:38on the field with their kids. think about game
- 1:43:42one and the fact that they had one of the toughest
- 1:43:44left -handers in baseball, the baseball foot
- 1:43:46off. They came out here swinging from the heels.
- 1:43:48Good point. And also these fans are not going
- 1:43:50to let them prove. I'll tell you, they want to
- 1:43:52win and they can really get you pumped up and
- 1:43:54excited. I, as a simple announcer, get excited
- 1:43:57listening to them. The umpire behind the plate
- 1:44:24had to make that call, and he made it right away,
- 1:44:26too. So the umpire behind the plate today is
- 1:44:29Kitts, I guess. And he's doing the best job of
- 1:44:31anybody I've seen behind the plate, not just
- 1:44:33because we're winning, because either club is
- 1:44:35arguing with him. Well, I used your quote. Game
- 1:44:40one, Joe Brinkman was a pitcher's umpire. That's
- 1:44:42right. For both sides. Right -handed right here
- 1:44:45is the pitch to Terrell, and it's a strike. And
- 1:44:49then another thing, you lose a tough game like
- 1:44:50that, men got Slidorff to look forward to. The
- 1:44:53White Sox have rebounded off of him after he
- 1:44:56beat the Sox two weeks ago. Here's the one -strike
- 1:44:59pitcher swinging a grounder to second. Fires,
- 1:45:01got it. And he throws over to first. And there's
- 1:45:05two outs. You know, the last double play that
- 1:45:08we made was outstanding. I want to say two guys
- 1:45:11with soft hands, with knowing what to do and
- 1:45:14where to be. I think if they played together
- 1:45:16all the time, you'd see some plays. long, but
- 1:45:19of course, Orta has been sensational, too. That's
- 1:45:21why we're better. We've got better utility instillers
- 1:45:23and guys that can play anywhere. I think the
- 1:45:26only thing that we're lacking right now is that
- 1:45:28extra right -handed hitter. Here's the pitch
- 1:45:31and a slow ball. Yeah, I know that. And I think
- 1:45:34if Nordhagen maybe gets some more catching, he
- 1:45:37might be even better, too. So it's highly important
- 1:45:40that we can fill a few spots if we're going to
- 1:45:42go all the way. And the pitching has just been
- 1:45:44outstanding. Right -handed ready. Here's the
- 1:45:461 -0 pitch. strike in the outside corner. You
- 1:45:49realize in his last three ballgames in a total
- 1:45:52of 18 innings, Shuler has allowed only two earned
- 1:45:56runs for an earned run average of 1 .00 with
- 1:45:59five walks and 15 strikeouts. Here's the pitcher
- 1:46:02to swing and a fly ball left center field. Lemon

- 1:48:02Claudel, Washington. Claudel, Washington leads
- 1:48:06it off here in the seventh inning. Claudel with
- 1:48:08a two -run homer here in game two. One for three.
- 1:48:12After going 0 for 2 in the opener, Marty Patton
- 1:48:14misses low of all. Washington, Lemon, and Nordhagen.
- 1:48:18Facing Patton here. Here's the pitch in the dirt.
- 1:48:21Two balls to no... It's the only game going on
- 1:48:26in the American League right now. Toronto and
- 1:48:30Texas tonight. Right -hander in the wind -up.
- 1:48:41Here's the 2 -0 pitch. And it's low. Ball three.
- 1:48:44Royals beat the White Sox 2 -1 Friday night.
- 1:48:47Sox won yesterday 6 -1. They won the opener in
- 1:48:50Kansas City to 3 -2 in game one. Now it's 6 -0
- 1:48:53White Sox. Right hander ready. Here's the 3 -0
- 1:48:56pitch. And it's a called strike. Three balls
- 1:49:02and a strike to Claudel. Outfield plays him to
- 1:49:04go the other way. Here's the pitch. Swing and
- 1:49:07a foul. Hits the home plate umpire. The chest
- 1:49:09protector, Russ Getz. Backs him up a couple of
- 1:49:13steps. He's all right. Ball goes out about a
- 1:49:15third of the way down the line. A third. And
- 1:49:18George Brett throws it out of play. 3 -2 the
- 1:49:21count to Claudel. and hit three home runs here
- 1:49:26in game two. Sodder home a pair, and Washington
- 1:49:29a two -run homer. Here's the 3 -2 pitch. Swing
- 1:49:32and a topper to the shortstop. UL Washington
- 1:49:34comes in, has it on the short hop, but drops
- 1:49:35it. Cordell is on. Some play will wait for the
- 1:49:39official decision. Patek out of the ballgame.
- 1:49:41UL Washington, now it's short. It goes as a hit.
- 1:49:54Chef Levin the batter. Levin has doubled in two
- 1:49:57trips here in game two after going 0 -5 in the
- 1:50:00opener. Right hander ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:07And it's a called strike. 6 -0 White Sox after
- 1:50:19losing the opener 3 -2 at 11. Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:21High and inside. A ball. Pitching shut high and
- 1:50:25tight all day. Doesn't adjust to it at all. He
- 1:50:29stays right on top of that plate. Different theories
- 1:50:33on that. Some people think he should back off.
- 1:50:35Others, like a Ted Williams, don't change at
- 1:50:38all. Stay with what got you there. Here's a pitch,
- 1:50:42and it's a called strike. Snap throw to first,
- 1:50:44the runner back. 598 here today. Series drew
- 1:50:56112 ,181. Some 15 ,000 more than the three dates
- 1:51:04that Kansas City did two weeks ago. Right -hander
- 1:51:07ready. Here's the one -two pitch, and it's outside
- 1:51:09of all. The one thing you have to keep in mind
- 1:51:12about promoting Chicago baseball fans is that
- 1:51:17every home game of the year with an occasional
- 1:51:20Monday night game, It's televised. Here's the
- 1:51:23pitch. Here's a swing and a fly ball. He adjusted.
- 1:52:10Go down about it. And it's an 8 -0 ball game.
- 1:52:167 of the 8 runs. and there's one out. But talking
- 1:53:31about the Chicago baseball fan, and I include
- 1:53:33both fans of the White Sox and the Cubs, that
- 1:53:36every home game, with the exception of maybe
- 1:53:39three or four a year on Monday night, are televised
- 1:53:43here in the Windy City. And still, over three
- 1:53:47million came out a year ago, and could well go
- 1:53:53over that mark again this year. Here's the pitch
- 1:53:55to Bill Naharatne, who's holding a foul off the
- 1:53:58catcher. Drove in the first run of the ballgame
- 1:54:01with a sacrifice fly. That was the only run the
- 1:54:05White Sox did not get on a homer. Then Sonderholm
- 1:54:07hit a solo homer. Washington a two -run homer.
- 1:54:10Here's the pitch. Here's a swing and a pop -up
- 1:54:13to the left side. Brett, the third baseman is
- 1:54:15there. Moves into foul territory. And he moves
- 1:54:18back into fair territory. number two after going
- 1:54:37two for five and driving in a run in game number
- 1:54:40one. We'll have the hot corner show on with Sauter
- 1:54:43home after the ball game. Here's the pitch high
- 1:54:45and inside the ball. Snap throw to first, the
- 1:54:47runner back. Eight to nothing, the White Sox
- 1:54:52leading. Ron Schuller out of the ball game after
- 1:54:56being hit on the little finger of his left hand,
- 1:54:58his non -pitching hand. Take it in for X -Ray.
- 1:55:00There's a swing and a foul on Kansas City Royals,
- 1:55:15California will pick up a half a game on Kansas
- 1:55:17City. Here's a pitch high on inside of all and
- 1:55:19move within one game at first. Oakland would
- 1:55:23be two and a half back, tied with the White Sox.
- 1:55:54here in game two. In the American League East,
- 1:56:00Baltimore moved into second place behind the
- 1:56:02Red Sox after Boston and the Yankees got beat
- 1:56:04today. Baltimore now six and a half back. Kessinger
- 1:56:13batting from the left side again against Patton.
- 1:56:15Got a base hit off of him. His last time up.
- 1:56:19Singling to right. Here's the pitch inside of
- 1:56:22Baltimore. Giants are shutting out the Mets in
- 1:56:34a doubleheader. They beat them 3 -0 in Game 1,
- 1:56:36leading 2 -0 at the end of 7 in Game 2. Here's
- 1:56:38the pitcher swinging a foul back to the screen.
- 1:56:41Atlanta beat the Pirates 8 -7. Cincinnati over
- 1:56:44the Cardinals 4 -2. And San Diego beating the
- 1:56:47Phillies 3 -0 in the bottom of the eighth. The
- 1:56:49Cubs will be at Houston tonight. Patton out of
- 1:56:56the stretch. Here's the pitch, and it's a called
- 1:56:58strike. The 1 -2 delivery. Swing and a shot to
- 1:57:15the second baseman. He's got it. And that retires
- 1:57:17the side as Kessinger lines out. But in the inning,
- 1:57:20the White Sox come up with two more runs on three
- 1:57:22hits. The big blow at two -run homer by Lemon.
- 1:57:26And two men left on. So we go to the eighth.
- 1:57:28It's game two after the Royals won the opener
- 1:57:313 -2. Here in game two, the White Sox 8, Kansas
- 1:57:34City nothing. When it's time to sell your house,

- 1:58:21serving Berwyn, Cicero, and the western suburbs

- 1:58:41White Sox out in front here by a score of eight
- 1:58:44to nothing in game two after the Royals won the
- 1:58:46opener three to two in 11 innings. Then retire
- 1:59:13the side in order in the seventh. So he is starting
- 1:59:16his third inning of relief here and has Coquette,
- 1:59:19Brutt, and Hurdle. Three left -handed hitters
- 1:59:21in a row to face. And the first pitch is low
