- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing Your Edge podcast,
- 0:12where we explore what it takes to create the bigger,
- 0:16bolder, badass life you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on paper,
- 0:22and not another spin on the self-help hamster wheel.
- 0:26If you're ready for more joy, more peace, and more contribution,
- 0:30you're in the right place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing.
- 0:37Hello, and welcome to episode four of Surfing Your Edge.
- 0:42I'm so glad to have you here today.
- 0:44We are talking again about what it means to surf your edge,
- 0:48and the challenges that can get in the way.
- 0:52One of the ways I think about surfing your edge is,
- 0:57for me personally, it's when I'm in over my head
- 1:00and having to figure out something.
- 1:02That's where I really, really thrive.
- 1:04And I know not everybody is in that same boat.
- 1:07They don't always want to have to be hanging on by their fingernails
- 1:11and figuring it out.
- 1:13But if you can be out on the edge of where you're growing,
- 1:17where the growth is happening,
- 1:19and stay there as long as you can,
- 1:22longer than you might want to,
- 1:24longer than feels comfortable,
- 1:27that's what I really mean by surfing your edge.
- 1:30And of course, the reason you want to do that
- 1:32is so that you're always evolving.
- 1:34I figure if you're here, you've got more to do,
- 1:37more to learn, more to be.
- 1:39And the way to do that is to surf your edge
- 1:42and continually try new things.
- 1:46And that's also going to mean failing sometimes.
- 1:52One of the things about this podcast,
- 1:55I started it really, really fast before I was ready.
- 2:00And that's probably obvious.
- 2:01But I just want you to know that I am surfing my edge
- 2:04right along here beside you.
- 2:06I don't claim to have it all figured out.
- 2:09I am just here figuring it out as I go
- 2:12and figuring it out in public.
- 2:14So you can learn from what you see me do.
- 2:19What to do, what not to do, maybe.
- 2:22But today, we want to talk a little bit about
- 2:25what in the world gets in our way of surfing our edges.
- 2:30The last episode, we talked about internal things
- 2:35that get in the way.
- 2:36Today, let's talk about what out in the world
- 2:38slows us down and keeps us from surfing that edge.
- 2:43Okay, the first thing I want to share
- 2:45is that a lot of times we, as middle-aged adults or older,
- 2:51have learned to reality-size our dreams.
- 2:54When we were kids, we could dream anything was possible.
- 2:57And adults seem to encourage that in us, right?
- 3:01But then as we got older, it became more about,
- 3:04oh, that's not realistic.
- 3:06Or, oh, that's not suited for you, honey.
- 3:09Your skills lie over here.
- 3:10You don't want to do this, right?
- 3:13So we start to get steered into a box or a lane.
- 3:17And we tend to learn the rules of that box or that lane.
- 3:22And the world tries to enforce that we stay there.
- 3:29And one part of that I call reality-sizing, right?
- 3:32We don't want to look,
- 3:36we don't want to draw too much attention to ourselves, right?
- 3:39We also don't want to outshine someone else.
- 3:42We don't want to look too proud, right?
- 3:44Like, oh, look at me.
- 3:46And we also don't want to look ungrateful.
- 3:48This one is huge.
- 3:50There are so many women I know who are afraid to think about
- 3:54what a bigger, bolder, more badass life might look like,
- 3:58because they're afraid it makes them look ungrateful
- 4:00for what they've already got.
- 4:02And that's just not the case.
- 4:06You can be super grateful for everything you've got
- 4:10and recognize all the goodness
- 4:13and still know that there's more for you to do,
- 4:16more for you to give, more for you to have.
- 4:18So what we've learned to do is look around
- 4:23and see what everyone else is doing,
- 4:25and then kind of like, well, maybe I could do that,
- 4:28but just put my own little twist on it over here, right?
- 4:32We want to end, or maybe I can't go for this,
- 4:37but maybe if I went for this, that would be acceptable, right?
- 4:41We learn to look around and see what everyone else is doing
- 4:44and then make appropriate goals or visions or dreams.
- 4:49And we don't let ourselves fully explore
- 4:52what is out there for us.
- 4:55And I want to tell you that that is not my goal for you.
- 5:00I really want you to make the impossible goal and go for it.
- 5:05And if you get there, amazing.
- 5:07And if you don't, you're going to end up somewhere incredible,
- 5:12regardless, right?
- 5:14So I will be here on this podcast,
- 5:17always encouraging you to stop reality sizing
- 5:20and to go for the impossible goal.
- 5:23It just, it's more fun, right?
- 5:27The other thing that happens, aside from us, you know,
- 5:30learning to look around and reality size,
- 5:33is that there are people out there who are enforcers
- 5:38that are be like, oh, that's not the way it's done.
- 5:41Look around the industry.
- 5:43That's not the way it's done.
- 5:44Everybody does it this way.
- 5:46You need to do it this way.
- 5:51I was in an organization, my first big job out of college,
- 5:55I was in a social change organization.
- 5:58And when I brought to the management of, you know,
- 6:01my local management, my direct bosses,
- 6:05some of the things I thought we could do to improve
- 6:07as a culture, they're like, oh no,
- 6:10it's always been done this way.
- 6:12We've always done it that way.
- 6:15I went through it.
- 6:16They went through it.
- 6:17Everybody else got through it.
- 6:19Why can't you get through it?
- 6:20The problem is not us, it's you.
- 6:25So even change organizations have a hard time, you know,
- 6:30recognizing that they're enforcing a set standard.
- 6:35So there are all kinds of people out there
- 6:38who are going to tell you, you can't do it that way.
- 6:41It's never been done.
- 6:43Don't do it that way.
- 6:44Oh, and they'll act like they're trying to save you, right?
- 6:48Like, oh honey, that is too hard a road.
- 6:51Don't go there.
- 6:53Don't do it that way.
- 6:55You don't need to go through that kind of pain.
- 6:57So let's just do it the way everybody else has always done it
- 7:00and we'll all stay safe.
- 7:03And then finally, this is another one.
- 7:06Those enforcers are often the people who love us most
- 7:11or the people we love the most.
- 7:14They have gotten used to us being a certain way
- 7:18and that makes us safe for them, right?
- 7:22They know pretty much what to expect
- 7:26and they don't want to have to adapt alongside you.
- 7:31They might be afraid that you're going to get hurt,
- 7:33that you're going to be disappointed,
- 7:34that you're going to lose money or time
- 7:38or whatever it is that is at risk.
- 7:42They're potentially truly afraid for you,
- 7:46but they also, I think, are concerned that
- 7:50when you start looking at yourself
- 7:52and start trying to grow in your way,
- 7:55that you're going to expect them to grow as well or to change
- 7:59and that can be painful
- 8:01and not everyone is willing and able to look at themselves
- 8:05and decide that they want to come along too
- 8:07and they're worried they're going to get left behind.
- 8:11And in some cases, they might leave you
- 8:14before you're able to leave them
- 8:16just proactively to protect themselves.
- 8:19So serving your edge is not for the faint of heart.
- 8:23It is a challenging thing.
- 8:26The world wants us.
- 8:29Much of the world wants us to stay the way we are.
- 8:33So if you are in this boat
- 8:36and you're starting to realize that there are things
- 8:38that you want that it might be hard for you to go get
- 8:42or to try,
- 8:45I want to suggest that there are ways to do it
- 8:48and there are people who will support you.
- 8:50Sometimes it's a matter of finding a new group of friends,
- 8:55a new coach, a new online community,
- 8:59someone who isn't as married to you being who you've always been
- 9:04and who can really help hold that vision of who you might become.
- 9:09The other thing is that you may not know what it is,
- 9:14what your edge is.
- 9:15You may not know what it is that will light you up
- 9:18and you need friends along the way
- 9:21who will help you explore it
- 9:24and give you the opportunity to really feel into
- 9:28what is going to light you up.
- 9:32So that is what I have to say today about the world.
- 9:37And I really do want to just give you a little bit of encouragement
- 9:40that it's totally worth it
- 9:44and I look forward to surfing my edge right alongside you.
