- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat your podcast coming in you shirtless,
- 0:12Speaker 1: severely bug bitten and in my case, underwear lessening podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You can't predict anything, Chris, you might revisiting a conversation
- 0:25Speaker 1: we had real quick, not at all. Uh Rich Pounder
- 0:30Speaker 1: and I were wondering, if you're eating an apple in
- 0:33Speaker 1: the woods, you like, stop for a moment. Then you
- 0:37Speaker 1: eat an apple, You finish your apple, why do you
- 0:43Speaker 1: throw it? Why do you throw the core instead of
- 0:47Speaker 1: just dropping it? Why do you want it like you're
- 0:51Speaker 1: not gonna be there. My theory was because, well, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: think about it, like, I can't do that in my house.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You have to take it over to the trash. Can
- 1:02Speaker 1: you take the trash? You gotta open it and delicately
- 1:04Speaker 1: place it in. But when you're outside you just huck it. Yeah,
- 1:07Speaker 1: it feels good. But if you were standing where like
- 1:11Speaker 1: let's say you're eating an apple and you finish it
- 1:14Speaker 1: and you huck it and where it lands, if you
- 1:16Speaker 1: had eaten the apple where it landed, you'd huck it
- 1:22Speaker 1: somewhere else. Yeah, you just huck it away from wherever
- 1:28Speaker 1: you're at it. I'm gonna stop doing it, though, I'm
- 1:30Speaker 1: gonna start when I finish the apple. I'm sitting that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: But you tried it and you didn't like it. The
- 1:34Speaker 1: trash being near you. Yeah, I tried just setting just
- 1:38Speaker 1: dropping the apple core since I'm not staying there anyway. Yeah,
- 1:42Speaker 1: just drop the apple core. But no, you're something about
- 1:46Speaker 1: your body wants to curl. Huck. I want to make
- 1:52Speaker 1: a throwing motion right now, and I don't. I am
- 1:54Speaker 1: not even eating an apple. Uh. People like throwing ship
- 1:58Speaker 1: they do certain kinds of things. Yeah, I think it's
- 2:02Speaker 1: the core is visually unpleasant. You don't want that sitting next.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I think that's why we really it might attract insects,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and that's not why you throw a core. Well, I
- 2:13Speaker 1: mean you're saying you don't know exactly why, but it
- 2:15Speaker 1: might be like oh in your deep down, Yeah, in
- 2:18Speaker 1: your deep down that a part Is that a part
- 2:22Speaker 1: of you? Your deep down? If I told you I
- 2:24Speaker 1: was gonna grab your deep down like the mammalian brain, yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 1: like how little kids come pre wired fear snakes. Yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and we're prewired to distribute apple seeds. Yeah, just like
- 2:38Speaker 1: a bird. Interesting, I'm comfortably moving on. Is that very good?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Of course? Uh? You know what's funny I'll point out, well,
- 2:51Speaker 1: god us talking about apple Core hawking was not an
- 2:53Speaker 1: apple Core damn bananippele m hm. Because you don't want
- 2:59Speaker 1: to slip, know you just don't. You don't. I don't
- 3:02Speaker 1: want that thing around you. You want to like clean
- 3:05Speaker 1: little space. Has anyone writing that you know ever slipped
- 3:08Speaker 1: on a banana pele? Do we know anyone here who
- 3:10Speaker 1: has actually done that? You know? I feel like maybe
- 3:12Speaker 1: we had a good laugh about someone once slipping on
- 3:14Speaker 1: a banana pel The writer Chris off It once said
- 3:17Speaker 1: to me he didn't make this up, but talked about
- 3:21Speaker 1: someone having one ft out the door and one on
- 3:23Speaker 1: a branana peel or something like that. But now I
- 3:27Speaker 1: haven't Maybe I like where did that start? Is that
- 3:31Speaker 1: like a cartoon visualization that has now seeped into like
- 3:35Speaker 1: all of our But yeah, it's the kind of thing
- 3:38Speaker 1: that you know from its representation rather than its individual reality. Uh.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Great story we heard dar night, and I think we
- 3:49Speaker 1: can all put it together right Uh, And then we're
- 3:54Speaker 1: gonna get into a couple of listening issues before we
- 3:56Speaker 1: get down to talk about what we're here to talk about.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So a mug where you're having dinner with you dar
- 4:01Speaker 1: at night. D what's his name's hunter? And he kind
- 4:04Speaker 1: of defies my old thing that if you have a
- 4:07Speaker 1: kid and you want him to hunt, you're like, oh,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I'll name him a hunter and he'll become a hunter.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And I've seen that backfire lot, but not on this dude.
- 4:15Speaker 1: What was this dude's name, Ynni Hunter? Meek him? Need's
- 4:19Speaker 1: meek him or meet him? He guides for Jay Scott
- 4:21Speaker 1: and Dark Holburn and he's a lion man. He's a houndsman,
- 4:27Speaker 1: comes from a long line of houndsman. Comes from a
- 4:29Speaker 1: long line of famous houndsman who have a long line
- 4:32Speaker 1: of famous hounds and Utah. I believe they hunt Utah.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And his father and his uncle and his family does
- 4:44Speaker 1: a lot of also helps out with a lot of
- 4:45Speaker 1: research projects involved in lions. He's telling a story about
- 4:50Speaker 1: his uncle goes up climbs up in a tree to
- 4:54Speaker 1: tranquilize a mountain lion with a tramp gun and takes
- 4:59Speaker 1: a poke with the gun and misses. So I don't
- 5:04Speaker 1: know if you can say when it's a tranquilizer, but
- 5:08Speaker 1: he shoots and misses the lion. So rather than you
- 5:12Speaker 1: now he's gotta reload the tranquilizer gun. So he lowers
- 5:16Speaker 1: the tranquilizer gun down on a rope to some kind
- 5:20Speaker 1: of college kid who's helping out on this project. And
- 5:24Speaker 1: the college kid, he made a big point to point
- 5:27Speaker 1: out that it was a college kid. Uh, loads reloads
- 5:31Speaker 1: of tranquilizer gun and ties it through the ties it
- 5:35Speaker 1: through the trigger mm hmm. The trigger guard ties it
- 5:40Speaker 1: to the trigger guard, so that once he starts hoisting
- 5:43Speaker 1: the tranquilizer gun back up. Oh no, yeah, blouch hits
- 5:52Speaker 1: him with the tranquilizer dart oh man, and he's out.
- 5:58Speaker 1: His dad this under his dad packed his brother down
- 6:03Speaker 1: off the on a on a mule tied to a
- 6:07Speaker 1: mule will pack him down. He was out for sixteen hours. Whoa.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And they had to keep him up and keep his
- 6:14Speaker 1: tongue like keeping positions so his tongue wouldn't fall back
- 6:16Speaker 1: in his head, which is exactly what they do with
- 6:20Speaker 1: the lion, so they knew what to do. Could have
- 6:24Speaker 1: very easily killed him. Tranked. Yeah, that'd be a good
- 6:30Speaker 1: name for that movie. Um wow, this has happened recently. Uh.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Game warden from Oklahoma gets the chit chatting on a bumble.
- 6:43Speaker 1: How many guys around. How do you guys used bumble
- 6:46Speaker 1: or have used bumble? I have Bridge Pounders used bumble? Yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Okale you've used bumble. Kenny, you've got no business on there?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Now is that a hunting He's got no business on there?
- 7:01Speaker 1: And Rick, you use bumble the dating app So game
- 7:06Speaker 1: Warden is chatting up a woman on a bumble like
- 7:10Speaker 1: fixing the data, and she mentions having just that she's
- 7:13Speaker 1: doing good because she just shot a huge buck and
- 7:15Speaker 1: he gets to ask her some questions about it and
- 7:17Speaker 1: get suspicious and and doesn't do it as a dating
- 7:22Speaker 1: as a date, but goes over there to do a
- 7:23Speaker 1: little investigation. Sure enough, she'd poached a buck buster while
- 7:29Speaker 1: trying to Roman answer on bumble. That's amazing in Oklahoma.
- 7:35Speaker 1: What's the moral of that story? Don't poach I to
- 7:42Speaker 1: be don't date Rick? Before the show, I was asking
- 7:46Speaker 1: real quick, um, like you gotta decide right now? Man,
- 7:49Speaker 1: do you want like a plug? I really hope you do.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You do? No, No, But I just I appreciate that
- 7:58Speaker 1: you are looking out for me our friend here, our
- 8:02Speaker 1: friend Rick. You're a great a photographer drone pilot we
- 8:06Speaker 1: just found out also great a photographer drone pilot. Now
- 8:09Speaker 1: that you don't want to mention that these are these
- 8:11Speaker 1: are not positives in the world world. No women, if
- 8:16Speaker 1: you you're like, oh, he's like a nature documentary photographer,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but that would be appealing to women. Here's the issue, though,
- 8:24Speaker 1: if you're into essential oils, do not call Rick you
- 8:28Speaker 1: like multivitamins. Yeah, because here's a weird deal about here's
- 8:32Speaker 1: a weird deal if you're if one was going to
- 8:34Speaker 1: date Rick is like you could picture that Rick might
- 8:38Speaker 1: lure in. He might lure in people who had habits
- 8:44Speaker 1: that Rick is against because he wants to fix them. Well, like,
- 8:48Speaker 1: he's very suspicious of vitamins, he's very suspicious of essential oils.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He's a skeptic. But you could also see that the
- 8:56Speaker 1: the ladies be lured would be drawn to Rick, who
- 8:59Speaker 1: might have a crystal in some essential oils. I'm not
- 9:03Speaker 1: against that. I mean, I'm really not. So those people
- 9:07Speaker 1: can contact you as well. Yeah, I'm not. I'm not.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I don't. I don't judge. Man, you're not in the market.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You're not in the market. You're not out of the market.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm definitely not out of there. I'm in the market.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's here. He's lurking outside of the market. It's the
- 9:27Speaker 1: good king outside. Yeah, No, lurking lurks not good. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: when you're trying to get a choice, you're trying to
- 9:33Speaker 1: get women to find a guy who don't use lurking.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That's right, that's that's he's hovering. No, he's pathetically No.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I thought I thought this was a hunting. We're getting lurking. Um,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I hope you're gonna mention the little buck from your house.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's a good story. That's a good story.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You keep that in mine. So I'm working down. I'm
- 9:58Speaker 1: working down through my notes. Here a couple of things
- 10:00Speaker 1: about bucks. Uh did you finish pitching? Rick? Oh? Rick? Uh,
- 10:06Speaker 1: he's too bashful. How how do they find you? So
- 10:08Speaker 1: we have a lot of female listeners. Um, they want
- 10:12Speaker 1: to find you. You know, they're like dying, they're dying
- 10:16Speaker 1: to date Instagram. I feel like that's the way people
- 10:19Speaker 1: find each other. Rick Smith Media, Rick Smith media slipping? No,
- 10:24Speaker 1: not slipping? How did they say it? Slide in on
- 10:27Speaker 1: Rick's d MS? Oh yea honest, you're pretty much your millennial,
- 10:33Speaker 1: are you. Yeah, he's right on the edge, right, I
- 10:38Speaker 1: don't have no idea. Yeah, yeah, that's not millennial, that's
- 10:43Speaker 1: pretty millennial. Got an email. They contained the saddest line
- 10:47Speaker 1: of all sad lines. And I've been thinking about this
- 10:50Speaker 1: for a couple of days now. A woman wrote in
- 10:52Speaker 1: a letter and her letter contained the line I'm a
- 10:55Speaker 1: woman and I'm gay, and so it's hard for me
- 10:59Speaker 1: to find to hunt with which I feel like going
- 11:03Speaker 1: hunting weather Now sadestly I've ever heard um not an email.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So she's saying like one compounds the other, which she's land.
- 11:15Speaker 1: She's like, I'm a woman, I'm a woman, and I'm gay.
- 11:21Speaker 1: For me to find people to hunt with, that is
- 11:24Speaker 1: a bummer. Guy wrote in we're talking about Santa Claus
- 11:29Speaker 1: being a grade A hole because, uh, you know, moving
- 11:34Speaker 1: around captive servants all over the place spreading disease. Guy
- 11:40Speaker 1: wrote in about that that's not my idea, but he says, man,
- 11:43Speaker 1: there should be a lot more scrutiny on Santa because
- 11:45Speaker 1: he's gonna, like, imagine the disease vector that guy's got
- 11:48Speaker 1: going on with his captive deer going to every house,
- 11:53Speaker 1: every Christian household in the world, with his herd deer
- 11:58Speaker 1: spread and lornels. What around. This guy says, if you
- 12:00Speaker 1: really are in a hack on Santa, think about it
- 12:03Speaker 1: like this. He says, My understand that deer can't see red.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So the only way if all the other deer were
- 12:14Speaker 1: so mean to Rudolph, the only way they would have
- 12:17Speaker 1: known as if Santa told him that his nose was different.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I think his nose as biggers like bullying. He sand,
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's like you guys can't see it because you can't
- 12:31Speaker 1: see red. You can't see that wavelength to check it out.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I can see it, and that Randy is way different
- 12:36Speaker 1: and y'all should be mean. It's very good points an
- 12:40Speaker 1: interesting observation. Another thing on dear real quick Ryan a
- 12:45Speaker 1: fear fear. He has something interesting to say. Um talking
- 12:51Speaker 1: about Antler restrictions. So he says, prior to two thousand two,
- 12:54Speaker 1: do you know this, Kenyan, I couldn't tell you that
- 12:57Speaker 1: the numbers are at the top of the head, but
- 12:58Speaker 1: I'm aware of the general and you're gonna tell me
- 13:00Speaker 1: about do you mind explaining what an Antler restriction is.
- 13:03Speaker 1: An Antler point restriction would be a regulation put in
- 13:06Speaker 1: place by a state requiring a certain number of Antler
- 13:11Speaker 1: points on a deer's antler for you to be able
- 13:14Speaker 1: to legally shoot it. So in Pennsylvania, I think in
- 13:17Speaker 1: most parts of the state they put an a p
- 13:20Speaker 1: R for short. They put an APR in place of
- 13:22Speaker 1: four points on a side for buck to be legal.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Oh man, and that was the bantler restriction. He's gotta
- 13:30Speaker 1: be a Michigan eight. Yeah. And I not from Pennsylvania,
- 13:34Speaker 1: So there might have been a part of the state
- 13:35Speaker 1: there was a three point on one side part of
- 13:36Speaker 1: the state with his four point on one side. That
- 13:38Speaker 1: might be the case. Um, but I believe the Seth
- 13:41Speaker 1: sickly Seth is uh too sick to even have a
- 13:45Speaker 1: head point on. But most states through on one side.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Some of the states four in the one side. Okay,
- 13:50Speaker 1: So I've got an uncle who hunts in the four
- 13:52Speaker 1: on a side part, which is why I know the story.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But it was with a stated goal of trying to
- 13:57Speaker 1: help the more one half year old bucks make it
- 14:00Speaker 1: to an older age class. Yeah, he he wrote in
- 14:02Speaker 1: because we're having this conversation where I was saying, I
- 14:04Speaker 1: don't have any data to support this, but I was saying, man,
- 14:07Speaker 1: like all the damn bucks when I was a kid,
- 14:10Speaker 1: we're a year and a half old. I mean virtually
- 14:13Speaker 1: all of them. You mean all the bucks taken. Yeah,
- 14:16Speaker 1: it's like everybody he shot box and they were all
- 14:19Speaker 1: the same spikes, forks, little sixers, right, just little like
- 14:24Speaker 1: not you know, they're year and a half old bucks.
- 14:26Speaker 1: It was a real rarity. Like I remember when the
- 14:28Speaker 1: old man shot a buck that was not It was
- 14:31Speaker 1: like a giant, you know, in our mind. But he
- 14:34Speaker 1: was saying, he doesn't he didn't have any statistics off
- 14:36Speaker 1: the at his fingertips for um Michigan. But he's saying
- 14:41Speaker 1: prior to two thousand two, when Pennsylvania introduced mandatory and
- 14:45Speaker 1: the restrictions, they're n of the bucks harvested were one
- 14:51Speaker 1: and a half years old. So, if you folks aren't
- 14:54Speaker 1: quick at math, nine out of ten bucks rolling a
- 14:59Speaker 1: year in a half old. Of that, eighty percent of
- 15:05Speaker 1: those were killed on the opening day of guns season.
- 15:11Speaker 1: That's pretty amazing. I'm gonna let that sink in for
- 15:18Speaker 1: a minute. Then he goes down to say this. He says,
- 15:22Speaker 1: in a nutshell, the biggest part of our annual buck harvest,
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, we killed all of our blocks basically in
- 15:29Speaker 1: two days of the season. Of those were one and
- 15:32Speaker 1: a half years old. At the time, they were about
- 15:36Speaker 1: one point to one point two million license hunters in Pennsylvania.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That trend, he says, with the norm in those days
- 15:43Speaker 1: in two thousand and fifteen, was the first time in
- 15:46Speaker 1: our nation's hunting history. So we're outside of Pennsylvania now,
- 15:50Speaker 1: two thousand and fifteen was the first time in our
- 15:52Speaker 1: nation's hunting history that we saw that trend change. As
- 15:55Speaker 1: a nation of hunters, we harvested more three and a
- 15:59Speaker 1: half year old olds than one and a half year
- 16:01Speaker 1: old in two thousand fifteen. Does that surprise you, Mark
- 16:05Speaker 1: Kenyan Wired to Hunt? It doesn't. I've been following that
- 16:08Speaker 1: trend for for prior deca now, and it's been moving
- 16:10Speaker 1: that direction more and more. And and I just got
- 16:13Speaker 1: the data here from this this year, looking back at
- 16:16Speaker 1: the most recent datas that would have been from the
- 16:19Speaker 1: two thousand seventeen eighteen season would be the most recent data,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and that shows that still we're at the lowest record
- 16:26Speaker 1: lowest harvest levels four year and a half old's nationally still,
- 16:29Speaker 1: So in Pennsylvania you mentioned nine ten bucks kill a
- 16:34Speaker 1: year and a half old. Now nationally, only thirty of
- 16:37Speaker 1: bucks harvested a year and a half old. Why, Yeah,
- 16:43Speaker 1: so pretty interesting and thirty four percent we're three year older,
- 16:46Speaker 1: three and a half older. Somebody tell me what's going on.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I'll say, what's going on? Rick? People, you should shoot
- 16:53Speaker 1: a lot of dinkers now they're shooting Biggins. Yeah. But
- 16:58Speaker 1: but the why I understand the I didn't need a recap.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I needed someone elsis I needed a recap. I'm really happy. Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I don't know about move on. Rick's got a good question,
- 17:13Speaker 1: But Mark, tell them what happened. Well, yeah, there's a
- 17:19Speaker 1: little bit of like a egg and chicken kind of
- 17:22Speaker 1: thing here. But probably the biggest thing going on here's
- 17:26Speaker 1: has been change in culture around white tailed deer hunting
- 17:31Speaker 1: in that a lot of hunters started to to see
- 17:34Speaker 1: and learn and hear about the benefits of letting young
- 17:38Speaker 1: deer reach older eight older age classes. And a lot
- 17:41Speaker 1: of that is to um to the credit of of
- 17:43Speaker 1: Ryan's employer of the Quality Deer Management Association, who's done
- 17:46Speaker 1: a pretty cool job of talking about a lot of
- 17:49Speaker 1: different things that we can do is deer hunters and
- 17:51Speaker 1: managers to try to, you know, manage for more natural
- 17:54Speaker 1: balanced deer herd of course, though to Steve's point that
- 17:58Speaker 1: he makes sometimes, which is true hunters, we get a
- 18:01Speaker 1: kick out of a big deer too. So a lot
- 18:03Speaker 1: of people realize that, hey, if I can make decisions
- 18:06Speaker 1: that help the deer herd and help me see and
- 18:08Speaker 1: maybe kill some bigger bucks, that's like a fun, beneficial
- 18:11Speaker 1: thing to do. So a lot more people saw those
- 18:13Speaker 1: benefits and started passing you younger deer, and they started
- 18:16Speaker 1: doing things to improve the habitat, did my health, deer
- 18:19Speaker 1: get bigger, um, and a slew of other things over
- 18:22Speaker 1: the years that the last ten fifteen years have have
- 18:25Speaker 1: really changed the landscape when it comes to deer across America. So, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 1: there's a lot more older deer and a lot more
- 18:33Speaker 1: deer that are bigger too. Dude, row it in. You're good,
- 18:38Speaker 1: Ricky cool? Yeah, I mean is that satisfied? Yeah? I
- 18:41Speaker 1: can ask some questions please. Well, I mean, I just
- 18:44Speaker 1: don't have any idea. But as the deer get older,
- 18:47Speaker 1: does that change the like what is it? How is
- 18:50Speaker 1: that affecting the the population area or herds? How does
- 18:55Speaker 1: it benefit Can we put that off yeah to a
- 18:58Speaker 1: future episode. Yeah, no, well we're gonna have We're gonna
- 19:01Speaker 1: focus on that in a future episode. It's okay with you,
- 19:04Speaker 1: be honest, I'll tell you when it comes out. Alright. Yeah,
- 19:09Speaker 1: that's the only way I learned about hunting by listening
- 19:11Speaker 1: to the podcast. So everyone good, I am. Guy says
- 19:19Speaker 1: he's got a real beef with me. He says that, um,
- 19:25Speaker 1: he says, I got kyot cooking all wrong. He says open.
- 19:29Speaker 1: He's saying that. Uh. He saw me cook Kyle where
- 19:33Speaker 1: we roasted it with the skin on, and he said
- 19:35Speaker 1: that's a sure way to ruin any game animal. That
- 19:38Speaker 1: would make even squirrel taste awful. This is him talking,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and then he goes on to say I very much
- 19:44Speaker 1: enjoy kyote meat and prefer to chunk it up and
- 19:47Speaker 1: fry it dusted and flour It tastes like a mild
- 19:50Speaker 1: combination of lamb and pork, and it's a great way
- 19:53Speaker 1: to add variety to the dinner table. I would love
- 19:56Speaker 1: to see you guys give it another try with the
- 19:58Speaker 1: care the meat deserves. That's good, that's fine. But I have,
- 20:06Speaker 1: contrary to this man's opinion, I have had wonderful squirrel
- 20:10Speaker 1: cooked where you burned the hair off of the squirrel
- 20:15Speaker 1: and then roast the squirrel with its skin on. In Vietnam,
- 20:19Speaker 1: I had wonderful, uh kind of weird squirrel possum looking
- 20:26Speaker 1: marsupio critter that a guy had shot out of a
- 20:29Speaker 1: tree with a air rifle, that he burned all the
- 20:33Speaker 1: hair off and then roasted with its skin. If you
- 20:39Speaker 1: read about the Planes tribes, they would cook domestic dog
- 20:43Speaker 1: that way, by burning all the hair off and roasting
- 20:47Speaker 1: in the skin. I've had wild pork, wild pig by
- 20:52Speaker 1: burning all the hair off and roasting in the skin,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and that was delectable. As for Kyle being good, how
- 20:59Speaker 1: many guys have had high out, Yeah, and he've had
- 21:04Speaker 1: a little nibble nibble last one. We should go kill
- 21:09Speaker 1: some nooks. I want to try Mandrick's recipe too. Ye,
- 21:14Speaker 1: we should give it a try. Oh yeah, I haven't
- 21:16Speaker 1: touched one since I ate my last one. A guy
- 21:18Speaker 1: wrote in he had hunted in Bolivia. He was down
- 21:22Speaker 1: hunting with some Uh indigenous people in Bolivion. He was
- 21:26Speaker 1: marveling how they two things. They went out to hunt
- 21:30Speaker 1: tape here, and they had a sixty engage shell and
- 21:35Speaker 1: they cut it open and put some kind of on
- 21:38Speaker 1: their own little They cut it open and took the
- 21:40Speaker 1: shot out and made their own little slugs somehow and
- 21:44Speaker 1: put it in there and use it to kill a
- 21:45Speaker 1: tape here. And he he said that they corded it
- 21:48Speaker 1: with the skin on, salted it like crazy. But it
- 21:52Speaker 1: reminded me of think about like this talk about shot
- 21:53Speaker 1: guns remind me thing. I was with some guys in
- 21:57Speaker 1: South America that had a sixteen gage shotgun, but they're
- 22:02Speaker 1: only ammo was twelve gauge shotgun shells. So they were
- 22:10Speaker 1: going out night hunting and they would take their cut
- 22:14Speaker 1: open their twelve gage shell and cut open their sixteen back.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Let me back up. Yeah, they had a sixteen gage
- 22:23Speaker 1: shotgun and a bunch of spent shells, and they had
- 22:27Speaker 1: a box of good twelve gage shells. So they laid
- 22:32Speaker 1: out some leaves like bowl shaped leaves, cut the twelve
- 22:37Speaker 1: gage shell open, don't the shot into a leaf, pulled
- 22:44Speaker 1: the wad out, poured the powder out, knocked the primer
- 22:50Speaker 1: out of the twelve gage shell, put the primer into
- 22:54Speaker 1: the sixteen gage shell, poured the powder in there, took
- 22:59Speaker 1: toilet paper and made a wadding and packed the wide down,
- 23:04Speaker 1: poured the shot and got a candle out and wax
- 23:07Speaker 1: sealed the things shot and they'd get two or three
- 23:13Speaker 1: and that was made up, and then it was time
- 23:14Speaker 1: to go hunting. Wow. Yeah. And one night they go
- 23:19Speaker 1: out and they come back with a couple of birds
- 23:21Speaker 1: and they had a a an aquatic road that they'd killed,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and they didn't have enough, and so they went through
- 23:28Speaker 1: this whole process and made one more shell and then
- 23:30Speaker 1: went back out in their boat and a while later
- 23:33Speaker 1: came back near dun hunting. Wow. Good stuff. That is
- 23:39Speaker 1: good stuff. Okay, we got it good, don't we? Where
- 23:45Speaker 1: where you beginning to Molly's Oh we're um. We're just
- 23:57Speaker 1: finishing up a hunt in Sonora, Mexico. Um, not far
- 24:03Speaker 1: from you know, ways off, not far from the US border.
- 24:07Speaker 1: You can see land features across the line in the US.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And it's kind of an auspicious time to be down
- 24:15Speaker 1: here hunting, because you know, we're engaged in a great
- 24:18Speaker 1: national debate about the um ramifications and costs and merits
- 24:26Speaker 1: of constructing a border wall. So it's been funny to
- 24:28Speaker 1: be down flirting with the border and seeing the border
- 24:32Speaker 1: and and and and being down here hunting. It's been
- 24:35Speaker 1: like more I've come down here a number of times
- 24:37Speaker 1: over the years to hunt, and it's been more sort
- 24:40Speaker 1: of I don't know, the geopolitics around my mind now
- 24:46Speaker 1: more than normal being down in Mexico um Cou's deer.
- 24:52Speaker 1: But I felt just the same as years passed, the hunting,
- 24:55Speaker 1: the land well and the the whole travel in the process. No,
- 25:02Speaker 1: no problem, no, no, no, I'm not suggesting that I'm not. Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I didn't mean to suggest that it was problematic in anyway.
- 25:08Speaker 1: You weren't. I was just adding that, yeah, now that
- 25:10Speaker 1: it was problematic anyway, It was just like an interesting time,
- 25:12Speaker 1: right absolutely to come down and hunt and Couzier. It's
- 25:18Speaker 1: Umku's deer also pronounced Cow's deer. A kind of a
- 25:24Speaker 1: weird dude with a real weird personal history. Elliott Cous'
- 25:28Speaker 1: is a guy whose name was applied to these deer
- 25:30Speaker 1: and you're hearing called desert white tails, a little dinky,
- 25:34Speaker 1: nine hundred pound white tails that live in the mountainous
- 25:37Speaker 1: desert and the Sky Island mountain chains. Some in New Mexico,
- 25:44Speaker 1: a great many in Arizona. And then this is kind
- 25:46Speaker 1: of like the good old days down here in Mexico.
- 25:49Speaker 1: There's gotta be more couzier down here than in all
- 25:51Speaker 1: of Arizona when don't you guess? Yeah, in all Sonora,
- 26:00Speaker 1: lots of cous dear, lots of cuse dear. So came
- 26:06Speaker 1: down and we were the way. I've never hunted down
- 26:10Speaker 1: here anyway, but this way, but we've never come down
- 26:13Speaker 1: not with working with Talk about Jay how I used
- 26:19Speaker 1: to work for him, my buddy Ja. Yeah, I used
- 26:22Speaker 1: to work for him as a fishing guide. He was
- 26:25Speaker 1: a client of mine. That's how we met. I didn't
- 26:28Speaker 1: realize that you guys met that way floating down the
- 26:30Speaker 1: old Eagle Eagle River mm hmm. So you guided him
- 26:37Speaker 1: fishing and then you started guiding for him. Yeah, that's
- 26:42Speaker 1: right in Arizona, a little bit down here and those
- 26:48Speaker 1: big famous elk units in Arizona. That's right. Good times,
- 26:54Speaker 1: And you'd like to add about that, you're being awful.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Kurt had a lot of fun hanging out. I always
- 27:00Speaker 1: when I see dark down here, I always think back
- 27:03Speaker 1: on those times and uh miss him because Darna used
- 27:06Speaker 1: two got together and I have a lot of good laughs.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So yeah, no, I don't know what to add about it.
- 27:14Speaker 1: It was good, um, but yeah, so Jay, I didn't
- 27:19Speaker 1: have no idea how time flies. But Jay said, this
- 27:23Speaker 1: is his twenty first year of doing this down here. Really, yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Jay Scott has glassed up the last time I asked
- 27:31Speaker 1: him this question, how many mountain lions he's ever glassed up?
- 27:35Speaker 1: The last time I talked to him, he was at
- 27:36Speaker 1: thirty two. It's like he spent so much time glassing.
- 27:41Speaker 1: You know, look a through his binos or spot and
- 27:43Speaker 1: scopes his number. Now he's glassed up forty three. So
- 27:49Speaker 1: if you think you spent a lot of time out hunting,
- 27:50Speaker 1: add up how many mountain lions you've seen through your
- 27:53Speaker 1: binos and then consider that this man has glassed up
- 27:58Speaker 1: forty three mountain lions while looking for other jumps. Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: if you're a Western hunters spent a lot of time
- 28:07Speaker 1: on the glass. This really wouldn't work for a do
- 28:10Speaker 1: that sits and tree stands. For a white tail, No,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you can wait a long time for mountainline to walk by.
- 28:15Speaker 1: But what Jay does? So Jay guides down. Jay guides
- 28:19Speaker 1: in Mexico. He guides elsewhere too, But he guides in Mexico,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and he guides for Gould's turkeys um and guides for
- 28:28Speaker 1: Cou's deer. But also does give him give him the
- 28:33Speaker 1: give him the spiel, Ynny, you'll do a better job
- 28:34Speaker 1: of it. It's a he basically does like a d
- 28:37Speaker 1: I Y program for guys that want to come down
- 28:40Speaker 1: to Mexico and hunt Cou's deer, and so he the
- 28:47Speaker 1: hunt itself is completely d I Y. But he arranges
- 28:50Speaker 1: the ranch and then it helps with your paperwork for
- 28:54Speaker 1: crossing your firearms across the border, and then kind of
- 28:57Speaker 1: gives you, um, just lays out the whole process of
- 29:01Speaker 1: what it's going to take a cross the border going
- 29:03Speaker 1: both directions. But he'll basically secure a ranch and secure
- 29:08Speaker 1: deer tags for that ranch, and then um, you buy
- 29:12Speaker 1: those through j you know, but the ranch provides them.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And then he basically uh helps you get your firearm
- 29:21Speaker 1: permit for Mexico and then gives you like a real
- 29:23Speaker 1: clean rundown of like this is what you need if
- 29:27Speaker 1: you're gonna bring a vehicle across the border. You need
- 29:29Speaker 1: the insurance and a letter that says that you're the
- 29:32Speaker 1: owner has had to then number this stat and the
- 29:35Speaker 1: other and then gives you real clear directions and he
- 29:37Speaker 1: also offers I think, um like what we call fixers
- 29:41Speaker 1: or like and translators like they can be at the
- 29:44Speaker 1: border to meet you, to help you through that process
- 29:47Speaker 1: to get you to your ranch. And once you have
- 29:49Speaker 1: to ranch, you on your own and it's like you're
- 29:51Speaker 1: it's like you have you it's like having a chunk
- 29:53Speaker 1: of national it's not national force because very much privately
- 29:56Speaker 1: owned land. But it's like it's like when you CROs
- 30:00Speaker 1: us the border and come down in here, not that
- 30:01Speaker 1: far man, it's like you've gone back like a hundred
- 30:05Speaker 1: years back in time, huge ranches. People still work cattle
- 30:11Speaker 1: on horseback. It's great, mon. I mean, I had a
- 30:18Speaker 1: very different idea of how this trip was going to
- 30:22Speaker 1: be when um I got the offer to jump on
- 30:26Speaker 1: and yeah, this whole situation is really fantastic. And the
- 30:33Speaker 1: folks um that we've had helping us out here at
- 30:39Speaker 1: at the Rancho um are great. And it's just kind
- 30:43Speaker 1: of like it's nice watching uh and being around folks
- 30:49Speaker 1: who are living simply and um, you know, I kind
- 30:53Speaker 1: of feel like a bum because they were working, but
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know, while we're tramping the hills. But it's it's
- 31:00Speaker 1: is nice. It it's kind of kind of relaxing. Oh yeah, man,
- 31:06Speaker 1: caught loose on like caught loose, winding around like a
- 31:08Speaker 1: giant chunk of property. Yeah, got a bunch of deer
- 31:11Speaker 1: hiding out in the mountains in it. Yeah, and it's
- 31:15Speaker 1: it's just been It's great too, because it's not like
- 31:18Speaker 1: you're not like walking down to some or not even
- 31:22Speaker 1: walking in some cases. You're not just like stepping out
- 31:25Speaker 1: the door and looking at some center pivot that's fully
- 31:28Speaker 1: irrigated and chuck chuck chucking away and there's deer living
- 31:34Speaker 1: in there night and day. And um, you know I
- 31:37Speaker 1: wouldn't mind having a spot or two like that. Well,
- 31:41Speaker 1: then you wouldn't see any of the ranch, you know.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I mean, this has been awesome because, um, you definitely
- 31:48Speaker 1: got to do some exploring and and checking out new stuff,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and it's been great. It's been great. It's funny back
- 31:56Speaker 1: home hunting white tails. When you talk about a property
- 31:58Speaker 1: you can hunt. You know, if I said I got
- 32:01Speaker 1: a big property to hunt, I'd be like a hundred
- 32:03Speaker 1: fifty acres two acres. I would be really excited about that.
- 32:06Speaker 1: When you're talking about this kind of scale we have
- 32:09Speaker 1: out here, like you said, it does feel like national forest.
- 32:11Speaker 1: It's vast, it seems unending almost tens of thousands of
- 32:14Speaker 1: acres completely undeveloped, like all day never cross the border. Yeah, completely,
- 32:22Speaker 1: like just like not developed. It's just a different it's
- 32:24Speaker 1: just different. The way you hunt Cousier. As you get
- 32:28Speaker 1: up this is the This isn't the way it has
- 32:31Speaker 1: to happen. But typically you get up on the kind
- 32:34Speaker 1: of the biggest highest peaks around it you can find,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and um, and you have to just watch the surrounding
- 32:43Speaker 1: hillside is very very very carefully extremely hard to pick up.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The brush is tall and the animal is small. And
- 32:56Speaker 1: it like, for me, one thing uh that really struck
- 33:04Speaker 1: me and something that I had to kind of like
- 33:06Speaker 1: recalibrate my brain over and over again too, is um
- 33:11Speaker 1: was it when when any animal stands out in the
- 33:16Speaker 1: wide open, you're kind of like, oh, yeah, there he is,
- 33:18Speaker 1: and they seem like bigger than life. But when they're
- 33:21Speaker 1: in that brush, these things are so small that UM.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Free handing my binoculars at often many times throughout this hunt,
- 33:33Speaker 1: free handing my binoculars would be frustrating to the point
- 33:37Speaker 1: where I thought it was pointless, Like I had to
- 33:40Speaker 1: have them on on the tripod because so many times
- 33:44Speaker 1: I like looked at a deer and the only reason
- 33:51Speaker 1: that I caught it was because of the motion of
- 33:54Speaker 1: the deer. And that could be like the chin moving
- 33:57Speaker 1: as it's chewing its cut, like little white flashes from
- 34:01Speaker 1: its chin moving, or just an ear flicker, or you know,
- 34:05Speaker 1: maybe in a generous way, it'd be like a big
- 34:08Speaker 1: white tail given a flap um. And so if your
- 34:12Speaker 1: binoculars were moving at all, you know, at yards um,
- 34:18Speaker 1: you're gonna miss that little bit of motion. It was
- 34:21Speaker 1: just amazing at like, I had a hard time giving
- 34:24Speaker 1: them the credit that they would due as far as
- 34:27Speaker 1: their ability to disappear. Yeah, go ahead, well, I was
- 34:31Speaker 1: gonna say. And then to compound on that, if you
- 34:35Speaker 1: were to somehow you know, well, if even if you
- 34:39Speaker 1: had him on tripod, if you bumped them or in
- 34:41Speaker 1: any way left that singular focus on that little bit
- 34:44Speaker 1: of movement, you almost never find it again. So if
- 34:47Speaker 1: you're handheld, you're stuck. Yeah, that's a good point, because
- 34:50Speaker 1: you look at it like a sea of brushy slopes.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And oftentimes you'll be sitting there with you with your
- 34:57Speaker 1: bodies at your hunting with and you'll be like, oh,
- 35:00Speaker 1: got one, and they'll be like where like I can't,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I don't, I can't tell you, I don't know, I
- 35:05Speaker 1: don't want. I can't take my eyes off it to
- 35:06Speaker 1: get the context, and you can't. You know that the
- 35:11Speaker 1: minute you move your eye to figure out where it is,
- 35:14Speaker 1: that your binoculars are centered on it in order to
- 35:16Speaker 1: explain it that something's gonna happen, You're gonna lose track
- 35:20Speaker 1: of the deer. It's like the world's best game of
- 35:23Speaker 1: Where's waldo? Oh. It's fun, but it's like it's they
- 35:27Speaker 1: just vanish. Then you see him and oftentimes you like
- 35:30Speaker 1: catch them and you never catch him again. He went
- 35:33Speaker 1: into that never mind and you never see him again,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and we're hunt him during the rut. So you and
- 35:39Speaker 1: you don't even watched two Dear Make Love. That's the
- 35:45Speaker 1: second time I've seen that happened this year. I was
- 35:49Speaker 1: commenting on the strong oral component. Yes, said love making
- 35:55Speaker 1: a lot of beforehand. After Yeah, you k that needs
- 35:58Speaker 1: to be further defined. I don't want it to find
- 36:00Speaker 1: we got down family. It's a family program. Uh, there's
- 36:09Speaker 1: two like there's two things. And you know I've heard
- 36:12Speaker 1: uh guys like big white tail guys talking to you. Mark,
- 36:17Speaker 1: You're the kind of the main one I know, um
- 36:19Speaker 1: talking about bucks being locked down. Yeah, lockdown being that
- 36:26Speaker 1: that there's a period like in the breeding cycle when
- 36:29Speaker 1: you can't find any big box because the big box
- 36:31Speaker 1: are just standing there. Body, don't you're not doing anything.
- 36:34Speaker 1: They're just hanging out with the dough and man like,
- 36:37Speaker 1: we saw two kinds of buck activity box that were
- 36:41Speaker 1: just moving so fast and so much that it was
- 36:44Speaker 1: like you couldn't go get him if you wanted them,
- 36:46Speaker 1: because they just come in and out of your life.
- 36:49Speaker 1: You know, well, there is you kind of where you
- 36:51Speaker 1: watch him, you losing me, watching me lose me, watch
- 36:54Speaker 1: me losing in precent his way the hell down the
- 36:55Speaker 1: hill and he's gone and he's just gone. Or you
- 37:00Speaker 1: catch a glimpstom and he goes into some giant sea
- 37:02Speaker 1: of brush and never comes back out and he's gone
- 37:04Speaker 1: out of your life. But then the ones we got, no,
- 37:08Speaker 1: that's kind of that's not really true. Yeah, So the
- 37:12Speaker 1: best opportunities were bocks that were that were so intensely
- 37:18Speaker 1: focused on a single dough that they would allow We
- 37:25Speaker 1: watch one today that would go twenty minutes not moving
- 37:31Speaker 1: his feet and not taking a bite to eat. But
- 37:34Speaker 1: just stand there for twenty minutes and watch a dough
- 37:36Speaker 1: feed ten twenty yards away from him, and like all
- 37:43Speaker 1: that's on his mind is standing there. They like to
- 37:47Speaker 1: be a little higher standing, and SE's like they like
- 37:50Speaker 1: to be a little teeny bit higher than the dough
- 37:52Speaker 1: and just stand there and stare at her. He was
- 37:55Speaker 1: a very it was very familiar white tailed behavior in
- 37:58Speaker 1: that regard. That seemed like something that makes sense. You
- 38:01Speaker 1: saw some number of bucks cruising, which was that first
- 38:05Speaker 1: behavior you talked about, just moving around trying to find
- 38:08Speaker 1: that dough. And then when a buck did have a doll,
- 38:11Speaker 1: sometimes several bucks all trying to be close that doll.
- 38:13Speaker 1: But typically there's that one that is with a doll
- 38:16Speaker 1: that's ready to breed. You have that lockdown phenomena. And yeah,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I mean we all I think saw situations like that.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Their patients is kind of amazing or whatever. It is
- 38:26Speaker 1: their focus, especially when you get a look at the
- 38:31Speaker 1: parasite load on these things. Yeah, they have dozens of
- 38:39Speaker 1: per I think if you looked at a patch of
- 38:43Speaker 1: their hide three inches by three inch, twenty or so ticks,
- 38:48Speaker 1: you look around the bald spot just around their anus,
- 38:52Speaker 1: the hairless patch around there, crawling with ticks. They have
- 38:59Speaker 1: nasal bots living in the back of their throat that
- 39:02Speaker 1: could be the size of like the end of your pinky.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Their fore legs are perforated with cactus thorns and all that,
- 39:11Speaker 1: and they can stand there staring at a lady. I
- 39:14Speaker 1: think we've all been there. I don't. Oh man, that's
- 39:18Speaker 1: a lot of stuff. Yeah, focused on the press markets crabs,
- 39:26Speaker 1: but you know that bucks thinking the exact same thing
- 39:32Speaker 1: we're thinking when we're looking through the spatting scope for
- 39:35Speaker 1: the binoculars though, right, He's like, man, if I take
- 39:39Speaker 1: my eyes off of her, I may never see her. Yeah,
- 39:41Speaker 1: he knows he's gonna lose her. Yeah, it's kind of
- 39:43Speaker 1: It's kind of become one of my favorite types of hunting.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Those the hunt COO's dear man. I loved every minute,
- 39:50Speaker 1: like and never I never had a moment where I
- 39:55Speaker 1: was like, God, I hope I filled this tag. It
- 39:59Speaker 1: was always like, well, this goes on another day. I'm
- 40:02Speaker 1: all right with that. Yeah, what what I think happened
- 40:06Speaker 1: with the with the buck you got? The first time
- 40:08Speaker 1: I've ever seen it happen with a couisier I think,
- 40:10Speaker 1: is uh kind of stumbling into a buck, yes, very much,
- 40:16Speaker 1: went up to a glass and knob and then found
- 40:19Speaker 1: a buck. Yeah. And you know what's extremely unique about
- 40:23Speaker 1: that for me is ah, I can count on one
- 40:30Speaker 1: hand the amount of times I've filled my tag before
- 40:34Speaker 1: everybody else in camp has filled their tag, like I
- 40:39Speaker 1: always mostly by choice, and the last person to fill
- 40:45Speaker 1: my tag. It's kind of where I feel more comfortable,
- 40:48Speaker 1: I think, mostly from growing up doing the guiding thing.
- 40:52Speaker 1: But Steve had purposely walked away without his gun, without
- 40:57Speaker 1: more binoculars, and and we saw it. But I wasn't.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I wasn't considering myself to be up anyway. Well that
- 41:06Speaker 1: doesn't matter, I mean to me, I was thinking in
- 41:10Speaker 1: my mind, I was you were up. It helped my
- 41:13Speaker 1: decision making so so much because you had your your
- 41:18Speaker 1: toilet tree hit in your hand. I was going over
- 41:22Speaker 1: to find a rock that I was going to flip
- 41:24Speaker 1: over and then do some something, then flip that rock
- 41:30Speaker 1: back over on top of it and come back and
- 41:33Speaker 1: check on y'all. And I was just it was like
- 41:37Speaker 1: the perfect the perfect green light for me because I
- 41:41Speaker 1: was like, all right, well this isn't even an argument
- 41:44Speaker 1: at this point because my inclination would have been like, Steve,
- 41:47Speaker 1: get your gun. No, I would have said no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 41:51Speaker 1: I ain't just attest to what an amazing the stealthy
- 41:57Speaker 1: crew you get to run around with seven en of
- 42:00Speaker 1: us just waltz right up to two yards and they
- 42:06Speaker 1: were able to film at all. It's hard to using
- 42:09Speaker 1: the hand signals all day and being non verbal and
- 42:14Speaker 1: sneaky like that. You spotted him too, didn't you. It's like,
- 42:17Speaker 1: as soon I remember, as soon as we got up there,
- 42:19Speaker 1: you were like, oh, the eagle. Why do I think
- 42:22Speaker 1: we call him the eagle? Dude? You cannot mess with
- 42:24Speaker 1: the eagle. Why do you think he gets the work
- 42:26Speaker 1: here because he's the eagle. It's not because his sass,
- 42:31Speaker 1: it's not. We don't keep him for his sass? What
- 42:35Speaker 1: about his What about his shoulders? Yes, the big beefy
- 42:39Speaker 1: shoulders helps a lot. His lack of verbosity, um right now,
- 42:45Speaker 1: is not helping him. But the eagle. How many words
- 42:49Speaker 1: one uses? But um, the eagle is the eagle? Man
- 42:55Speaker 1: like a very if you said he gave me a
- 42:57Speaker 1: very verbose explanation, be like a little lots there, yeah,
- 43:02Speaker 1: lots there, lots there loquacious one that when he does strike,
- 43:10Speaker 1: he strikes. Now with Mark's buck, Marks buck, we spotted
- 43:17Speaker 1: up some bucks. So that was a non trad CU's dear.
- 43:22Speaker 1: That was a non Tradu's deer. That was the first
- 43:24Speaker 1: time I've seen that happen. It was the first time
- 43:27Speaker 1: in the my buck last year that way. No, yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 1: last year last year with John and I John snow
- 43:35Speaker 1: and I forgot about last year. M hm, yeah, but
- 43:40Speaker 1: I wasn't there, you weren't. So the ones I've been
- 43:43Speaker 1: in on, I've never seen a play out where um,
- 43:46Speaker 1: it's always played out where you see it far off
- 43:50Speaker 1: and then have to do some things to get over
- 43:52Speaker 1: and getting to get a crack at it. The ones
- 43:57Speaker 1: I've been in on, which is a good handful. Um,
- 44:03Speaker 1: it was the first of my scene where we where
- 44:04Speaker 1: we actually kind of came on, came upon one Marx
- 44:09Speaker 1: was more classic cousier situation. YEA spied him from about
- 44:15Speaker 1: a thousand yards and then you have the work downhill
- 44:21Speaker 1: and get you know, yards closer. Yeah, first time I
- 44:29Speaker 1: ever done anything like that, because I think it's telling Yanni.
- 44:32Speaker 1: I've never muled deer, hunted, never cous deer hunted. I've
- 44:35Speaker 1: only ever both hunted five percent of the time for
- 44:38Speaker 1: white tails, occasionally us a shotgun muzzle loader to shoot
- 44:41Speaker 1: the hundred yard shots max. So this is way outside
- 44:44Speaker 1: of my ballpark of of experience, and it was all
- 44:48Speaker 1: the all the hunting this guy's done. That was the
- 44:50Speaker 1: longest shot he's ever taken. Oh yeah, and the longest
- 44:54Speaker 1: shot before that was my shot last year on the
- 44:56Speaker 1: care Boo. So you guys have stretched and prior to
- 45:00Speaker 1: that it was probably nine yards, so you guysn't really
- 45:03Speaker 1: stretched me. Um when it comes to firearms. Was just good.
- 45:07Speaker 1: But yeah, we spotted that bucket a thousand yards or
- 45:10Speaker 1: so and decided that we thought he was a shooter.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And uh, Yanni and myself and and Seth went tearing
- 45:16Speaker 1: down the hill and went down the steep canyon at
- 45:20Speaker 1: about three yards, came up to this little rise at
- 45:24Speaker 1: the bottomless valley. There's a small kind of knoll, and
- 45:27Speaker 1: we got to the top of that rise shooting up,
- 45:29Speaker 1: shooting up, and uh, can I interject real quick? I
- 45:33Speaker 1: want to point out an important part of who's your hunt.
- 45:37Speaker 1: When you're watching a cou's doing, you're thinking like you're
- 45:39Speaker 1: gonna go after it. That's great, you found a buck,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you're gonna go after it. But the tricky question is
- 45:46Speaker 1: what we're exactly you're gonna go because it doesn't really work. Generally,
- 45:53Speaker 1: it doesn't work to get on his slope. You gotta
- 45:56Speaker 1: find a little perch or something where you can shoot
- 46:01Speaker 1: over into his area, like some kind of train feature
- 46:06Speaker 1: where you might plausibly like get there and look into
- 46:10Speaker 1: his brushy little zone. You can't get on his his
- 46:15Speaker 1: not that you can't, but typically would not work to
- 46:18Speaker 1: get on his slope in this bout set up perfectly
- 46:22Speaker 1: in that way because you had a little perch, had
- 46:24Speaker 1: a shooting shooting shooting up. Yeah, And the other thing
- 46:28Speaker 1: that's important to point out. I think that it was
- 46:30Speaker 1: a thing I learned from this trip was the importance
- 46:33Speaker 1: of before taking making that stock, you really need some
- 46:36Speaker 1: reference points locked in as far as where you saw
- 46:39Speaker 1: that dear last, because you're gonna lose it. You change perspective,
- 46:42Speaker 1: really flips them's around. So so we remember seeing that
- 46:46Speaker 1: there's a really thick patch of junipers, especially thick on
- 46:49Speaker 1: this hillside, and so we remember I remember seeing the
- 46:51Speaker 1: buck in the dough in that on the the right
- 46:54Speaker 1: side of that thick patch last. But then it was
- 46:56Speaker 1: actually Seth who had made the very most important reference
- 47:00Speaker 1: point was the fact that we had last seen the
- 47:02Speaker 1: buck and Do next to a tree with a very
- 47:05Speaker 1: unique white circle on it. So when we ended up
- 47:08Speaker 1: getting back to that shooting knob, we found the thick
- 47:10Speaker 1: patch of junipers, and then we could narrow down our
- 47:13Speaker 1: point of focus even further by looking for that tree
- 47:15Speaker 1: with the white circle on us. So we really could
- 47:17Speaker 1: zero it on where they were last, and they were
- 47:19Speaker 1: very locked down, like we were talking about earlier, they
- 47:21Speaker 1: hadn't moved very much at all, and we had come
- 47:24Speaker 1: up with a little We had come up with a
- 47:26Speaker 1: very rudimentary signaling system using Yanni's Blaze Orange How to
- 47:32Speaker 1: Go to Do Your Bandana UM available at the mediator
- 47:36Speaker 1: dot com currently out of stock, I believe, but coming
- 47:39Speaker 1: back in stock soon. UM a little signaling system where
- 47:45Speaker 1: if need be, like we agreed that if I didn't
- 47:50Speaker 1: do anything, that meant nothing had changed into if I
- 47:55Speaker 1: can interject, I kind of wished that there was another
- 47:59Speaker 1: say know that we had had, which meant we're not
- 48:03Speaker 1: trying here. We were getting that from you many times
- 48:06Speaker 1: when we looked at you, but we were not sure
- 48:09Speaker 1: if you were just doing that because you didn't see
- 48:11Speaker 1: us I got bored, or if you were doing it
- 48:13Speaker 1: because the deer was still doing what was supposed to do.
- 48:15Speaker 1: I got you. So we need some kind of confirmation
- 48:18Speaker 1: that you actually saw us and realized that we were
- 48:20Speaker 1: asking for the update. There's no update. Yeah, buck hadn't moved,
- 48:27Speaker 1: but we need to confirmation. So I'm perched up watching
- 48:30Speaker 1: the buck from afar and you're coming in. And our
- 48:34Speaker 1: agreement was if I don't do anything, there's nothing you
- 48:37Speaker 1: need to know for me. If if not, I was
- 48:40Speaker 1: going to take a orange bandin and tied to a
- 48:43Speaker 1: pole and uh point from my perspective what direction the
- 48:51Speaker 1: deer went on the face of the slope, but never
- 48:54Speaker 1: needed to do it. So, you know, I look back
- 48:58Speaker 1: at your handful of times and you were doing anything.
- 49:00Speaker 1: So the assumption was the deer was still in there,
- 49:02Speaker 1: just a dead stair on my face, Yeah, that's what
- 49:05Speaker 1: it was. And came up to the top of that
- 49:09Speaker 1: first knob, creeped up. Really we crawled to the top
- 49:11Speaker 1: of that knob, but it was about three yards I
- 49:13Speaker 1: think at that point, and just could not see anything.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Just we we We stayed there a good decent bit
- 49:20Speaker 1: I don't know, twenty minutes at least, maybe even more
- 49:23Speaker 1: glass and glass and glassing, but no movement. Um. So
- 49:27Speaker 1: finally we could see that there was still more of
- 49:30Speaker 1: that ridge that was hidden by the furthest edge of
- 49:34Speaker 1: our glassing knob. There's a slight rise and we just
- 49:37Speaker 1: couldn't see beneath that, and so we assumed, then, if
- 49:40Speaker 1: this box is still in there, it's got to be
- 49:43Speaker 1: beneath the rise. So we had to make a final
- 49:45Speaker 1: like seventy yard creep, and finally decided to do that.
- 49:49Speaker 1: We crept in, got right to the kind of highest
- 49:52Speaker 1: point of that little rise, got down on hands and knees,
- 49:55Speaker 1: and and that's when I spotted the dough. It stops glass,
- 49:58Speaker 1: see the dough. Um kind of made a game plan
- 50:02Speaker 1: for what we're gonna do next. Knew that there must
- 50:04Speaker 1: be the buck somewhere nearby. And Um, then I spotted
- 50:08Speaker 1: the buck not too far away in the brush like
- 50:12Speaker 1: just you know, thick junipers and whatever other junks down there, ok,
- 50:17Speaker 1: oak um, And I remember, in the first fleeting glance
- 50:22Speaker 1: of him, I remember thinking it doesn't quite look like
- 50:25Speaker 1: the buck we saw originally, and they turned to you.
- 50:27Speaker 1: I said, I don't know if it's the same buck.
- 50:29Speaker 1: It looks like at shorter times. But then he moved
- 50:32Speaker 1: off and crawled further and kind of got in position
- 50:36Speaker 1: to where I could get a shot in that general
- 50:38Speaker 1: are So we got positioned looking for them again, looking
- 50:41Speaker 1: for them again, and then I'm like, hey, I got
- 50:43Speaker 1: the buck again. I could see this buck standing underneath
- 50:46Speaker 1: that exact tree we had referenced earlier, the strange white
- 50:50Speaker 1: circle tree. He was right there underneath that tree again
- 50:54Speaker 1: in the shade in the tangle. And I just remember saying, hey,
- 50:56Speaker 1: there's a buck and arrange him two thirty yards so
- 51:02Speaker 1: within range, and uh, I'm looking at him and he's
- 51:06Speaker 1: dark handlered, and he's seemed wide ish. I just could
- 51:10Speaker 1: not see time length, and I'm thinking to myself, God,
- 51:14Speaker 1: I think this buck had longer times we saw earlier.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I don't know this bucks in range. Um. I can't
- 51:21Speaker 1: remember if we looked back. I think Seth was trying
- 51:23Speaker 1: to get a camera on it, and we asked him, like,
- 51:25Speaker 1: can you see him? Is he look Is it that buck?
- 51:27Speaker 1: And he's he's like, I just shoot it. If it
- 51:29Speaker 1: was me, and everything was kind of lined up. You know,
- 51:34Speaker 1: it worked out well for the crew with the audience
- 51:37Speaker 1: seth were there and it was my first cuse deer
- 51:41Speaker 1: buck and pretty sweet. So I got settled on him,
- 51:46Speaker 1: and like you know, like you mentioned earlier, that was
- 51:47Speaker 1: my longest shot ever on a on an animal. So
- 51:51Speaker 1: I took my time getting really settled in nicely and
- 51:54Speaker 1: had a bipod on the rifles set in my backpack
- 51:56Speaker 1: and put a patternneath my right elbow and just slowed
- 52:00Speaker 1: it down as best as I could. Um took the
- 52:04Speaker 1: shot well as funny as I was watching the other
- 52:07Speaker 1: buck through a spot and scope on a pretty narrow well,
- 52:10Speaker 1: we haven't yet pointed out the fact that this was
- 52:13Speaker 1: not the original It doesn't matter, which is funny that
- 52:17Speaker 1: I was, Yeah, okay, so go on. Well yeah, so
- 52:21Speaker 1: the point being that the buck I end up shooting
- 52:23Speaker 1: was not the original one was not what was not
- 52:25Speaker 1: the one I was watching to see what it would do.
- 52:28Speaker 1: But I'm staring at it through a spotting scope, the
- 52:31Speaker 1: one that we had always been looking at, and I
- 52:34Speaker 1: hear a shot and all of a sudden, the bark
- 52:36Speaker 1: runs into my field of view and through my spotting
- 52:39Speaker 1: scope and within a second falls over dead right in
- 52:45Speaker 1: front of the buck I've been watching for all that time,
- 52:49Speaker 1: and that buck seemed to not care about that at all.
- 52:52Speaker 1: But then she got like, yo, he had kind of
- 52:54Speaker 1: had an attitude like that bettered him to me. And
- 52:56Speaker 1: then he went up and over top of the ridge
- 53:00Speaker 1: and out of our lives. I don't know how we
- 53:03Speaker 1: never saw that other buck, because you said it was
- 53:06Speaker 1: so close, right, I can't see anything, man, confusing. We
- 53:09Speaker 1: talked about when he grunted right beneath us there yet
- 53:12Speaker 1: all kinds of weird stuff happened, but we couldn't see him.
- 53:15Speaker 1: But just because he was like the same reason we
- 53:17Speaker 1: couldn't see the other deer before we moved. I think
- 53:19Speaker 1: it was just below, yeah, the plane that we could see. Yeah.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I feel bad too, man, because I was so badly
- 53:29Speaker 1: wanted to help out and like look and stuff, but
- 53:32Speaker 1: I was running a camera and I'm always so torn,
- 53:35Speaker 1: and I always rather just throw that camera in the ditch,
- 53:37Speaker 1: just glass and be like there he is, don't you
- 53:40Speaker 1: shoot whatever, But man, I gotta sit there and try
- 53:44Speaker 1: to get my coverage. It's tough, man. You did good work. Well.
- 53:48Speaker 1: We don't know. Yeah, we'll see. I guess that's Mark's
- 53:51Speaker 1: hunt might and be included in the episode. We'll see.
- 53:54Speaker 1: It was the first the first hunt you filmed. No, no,
- 53:58Speaker 1: how long has it been since you a little bit?
- 54:03Speaker 1: This fault hunt? Yeah with Mark? Actually was that with you?
- 54:12Speaker 1: That was you? And I oh yeah yeah, and then uh,
- 54:19Speaker 1: I do a little bit here and there, and I
- 54:21Speaker 1: think he did another one. You pick up a camera
- 54:24Speaker 1: pretty often, but I feel you on the like not
- 54:28Speaker 1: being able to look and see what's going on. I mean,
- 54:32Speaker 1: and I want, I often want to see what's happening,
- 54:35Speaker 1: but I'm I'm just stuck in the lens of my camera,
- 54:38Speaker 1: like I'm not I don't see where the animal is.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I don't get to pull out my binoculars. So it's
- 54:42Speaker 1: all like almost imaginary. Everybody's really excited about something I'm
- 54:47Speaker 1: not looking at. I'm like looking in the opposite direction, dude.
- 54:50Speaker 1: But this trip, I was like, normally I'm like super
- 54:53Speaker 1: super excited to shoot, and I was you had to
- 54:56Speaker 1: film Yeah, good clarification, m But like normally we'll film
- 55:04Speaker 1: as every like hunter is getting into getting settled and
- 55:07Speaker 1: pulling out their binoculars, and I just wanted that part
- 55:09Speaker 1: to get done so then I could sit down, put
- 55:11Speaker 1: out my binoculars and start looking around. You spot it
- 55:15Speaker 1: up a couple of deer, Yeah, I'll get a lot better. Yeah,
- 55:18Speaker 1: but a lot yeah more on this trip and Sid
- 55:21Speaker 1: he still had mama's milk on your lip when we
- 55:23Speaker 1: picked you up, dude, the first thing talking about that today,
- 55:30Speaker 1: nice old game spotter. Uh yeah. The buck I got
- 55:36Speaker 1: was kind of like real standard sort of who's deer situation?
- 55:40Speaker 1: There was. I think there's a good example in there though,
- 55:43Speaker 1: because I was thinking about it because um the terrain, Um,
- 55:48Speaker 1: your buck was locked lockdown when we took off. But
- 55:54Speaker 1: we did a lot of walking and sneaking and trying
- 55:57Speaker 1: to get around for for quite a while. Yeah. You
- 56:02Speaker 1: go way the hell out of your way to try
- 56:03Speaker 1: to eventually wind up in a spot where you're in
- 56:06Speaker 1: his zone without him knowing you got into his zone. Yeah,
- 56:08Speaker 1: and and really didn't shave off, you know. I think
- 56:12Speaker 1: I arranged him before when we made the decision to go,
- 56:16Speaker 1: and it was like five hundred and eighty four yards
- 56:20Speaker 1: and then twenty minutes of hiking around and sneaking, we
- 56:24Speaker 1: were at five hundred and forty four yards. Like we
- 56:28Speaker 1: just we did a lot of moving around to try
- 56:32Speaker 1: to get to a spot where we could close distance.
- 56:35Speaker 1: And then um and we weren't. We weren't effectively narrowing
- 56:42Speaker 1: down that yardage. And then once we got in there,
- 56:45Speaker 1: um it. You know, it was a great stock, great
- 56:50Speaker 1: hunt because there's always that apprehension of like, oh man,
- 56:54Speaker 1: this this cannot work out, this cannot work out because
- 56:57Speaker 1: of the angle. Once we in order to it was
- 57:00Speaker 1: that yard is down to a comfortable shooting situation. Um
- 57:04Speaker 1: it made the angle to the buck very difficult, made
- 57:10Speaker 1: it a very difficult killing situation, even though it was
- 57:12Speaker 1: within effective range. And this is kind of for a
- 57:15Speaker 1: lack of a glass of a shooting knob, right, I
- 57:19Speaker 1: bet you found a shooting nob. Though we had to
- 57:22Speaker 1: poke and pride to find a knob. They would let
- 57:27Speaker 1: you look up into his little spot there. There's a
- 57:30Speaker 1: lot going on with there too. At one point you
- 57:35Speaker 1: guys had KU's deer, have len and a coyote. Yeah,
- 57:38Speaker 1: me and Seth were we stuck back and glassed from
- 57:41Speaker 1: the original distance. And yeah, that that buck the unit
- 57:44Speaker 1: up shooting was locked down with the doll. Four other
- 57:47Speaker 1: bucks were kind of circling trying to move in on
- 57:49Speaker 1: that doll, and it was pretty cool as that year
- 57:51Speaker 1: buck would run one of those bucks off, run off
- 57:54Speaker 1: thirty forty yards and then storm right back to the doll,
- 57:57Speaker 1: make sure she was still there, and then he'd run
- 57:59Speaker 1: off with the buck run right back. Um, and then
- 58:02Speaker 1: you have have linings came passing right through, maybe twenty
- 58:04Speaker 1: yards beneath at one point, right around the same time
- 58:07Speaker 1: the coyote trolled through in that buck stated right next
- 58:10Speaker 1: to the dough. They you can see all the deer,
- 58:11Speaker 1: just their eyes following that coyote the whole path he took,
- 58:14Speaker 1: and then he left and then it was right back
- 58:16Speaker 1: to the doll. It's kind of a fun little wildlife
- 58:18Speaker 1: watching situation I had there while you were talking in
- 58:22Speaker 1: it's amazing that at least I won't see that footage
- 58:27Speaker 1: until who knows long time from now. Yeah, and then
- 58:34Speaker 1: you'll be like, oh, that's right, that was cool a
- 58:36Speaker 1: couple of months now. I always like it's fun to
- 58:40Speaker 1: have that stuff. Um, people be like, hey, did you
- 58:43Speaker 1: take in your any photos from your trip? Like I
- 58:46Speaker 1: took a TV show on my trip, must be nice.
- 58:54Speaker 1: That was a very fun hunt, though, that was a
- 58:56Speaker 1: good one. Who wants to be in charge of talk
- 58:58Speaker 1: about how you make tomorle hold on? Aren't you guys
- 59:02Speaker 1: say about tell everybody how you got to shoot my
- 59:06Speaker 1: buck for me too? You go ahead and tell that story.
- 59:09Speaker 1: You just not like say anything you call go ahead.
- 59:13Speaker 1: It's hard to say things. It's tired. Everybody's I'm looking
- 59:19Speaker 1: looking a lot of it's just a lot of other
- 59:25Speaker 1: folks talking um. But no. After Steve shot his buck,
- 59:31Speaker 1: Steve and Chris walked up the hill to go retrieve it,
- 59:36Speaker 1: find it, recover it, and uh, callen ire waiting down there,
- 59:40Speaker 1: and I forget did you just look up and go, oh,
- 59:43Speaker 1: there's another buck standing out there? It was it was
- 59:48Speaker 1: just locked in place, but did you see it? There
- 59:51Speaker 1: was chasing the dough, two bucks chasing that dough. And
- 59:58Speaker 1: then yeah, and then I another buck like bombed in
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: and they eventually chased the dough and right through where
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: your buck expired. Steve's buck expired, and I was kind
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: of like, oh my god, hopefully one of these dear
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: isn't Steve's buck that just magically got up and ran away.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: But yeah, then that buck was down there in the
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: peripheral view. He just showed up. I don't know. A
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: woman in the market spotted him earlier in the same buck. Anyways,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: he standing in there looking down at us and in
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: our from what from our point of view, it looks
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: like he's thirty yards to the left of Chris and
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Steve and you guys are up there making television. So
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Steve's not talking in a quiet voice. He's doing his thing,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: recovering the animal. And uh, finally you guys get done
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: doing what you're doing, and Steve yelling is yelling down
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: on us like, hey, come on up here. You weren't
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: what were you yelling on the side of we did
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: we got a whoop or something like that? Yeah, you
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: got our attention. Okay, well a voice from up did
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I have occasion to go? Who not? Typically not time.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I do remember cal you up. You guys might have
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: heard us talking, because when you're like, when we were
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: up there, you could we were projecting pretty loud going
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Probably not whoop. I don't remember a whoop, but he
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that might have been me. Actually, hey, it might have
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: been me. All of a sudden, you guys, are you
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: guys recovered? Recovered? You made a little tide a little
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: scene and then and then, and then I remember hearing
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: cal being like, hey, can you guys take a couple
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: of steps to your left or whatever, to the north
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: or whatever? You said, go north? I went south. Yeah,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: go north. We went the robe specified a hundred yards
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: and started yelling because you guys didn't have a radio,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: We just started yelling, we have a bucket two some yards.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: You guys are t hundred yards and yards from the
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: buck and we're going, hey, can you move a couple
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: hundred yards to our right? And you yell back why,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: We're like, well, there's a deer up there. Ya. He's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: gonna shoot him if you guys can walk like way
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: to hell off of that slope. So that's so we did.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: You guys didn't, and the bucks stood there through the
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: whole thing. Conversation is like, well, boy, it's nice buck,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: it's right there. This would be you know, we only
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: have so much time to uh, you know, fill the tag.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: And it's like, well, if I just yell at those
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: guys and he stays there, kind of kind of gotta
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: take him, right, Yeah, we figured be worth a try, right.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: We figured since we started yelling, you know, the buck
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: would just scatter leave the hill. But it's hard to
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: imagine what was what was going on with him. Yeah,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I think that dough was just he knew he was
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: the second biggest buck on the slope. It was batter
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: up time for him because the first biggest buck was
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: out of the equation and those two smaller bucks were
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: now chasing that dough. But you and Pounder, we're in
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: between him and that dough. And he was like, really,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: he found himself in a very contemplative situation. He did
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: not move a muscle. No, no, it isn't really interesting though,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I've never seen this before. Obviously, since I've never been
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: in a situation like this. We were watching someone shooting
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: an animal from a DC and bit away, but we
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I was glassing this whole thing, watching it through my
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: binose and both with your bucks, Steve and Janice. I
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: saw the deer react to the bullet before I heard
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: the gunshot go off. That was pretty interesting. Yeah, that
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: was cool. I was like, oh, what's he doing and
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: then boom, yes that yeah, yeah, they're just still over. Well,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: neither of them fell over. Yeah, my shot wasn't quite
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: on the mark, missed him just the hair right. I
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: couldn't tell you. I shouldn't tell what went on in there, man,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: because one shoulder was completely just annihilated to the point
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: where I didn't even bother trying to trim me. Well,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: we took the shank, that's how much was good at
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: It was still, you know, edible, and there was a
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: hole going into the body cavity on the inside of
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: that shoulder. But anyways, the thing wasn't quite ready to die.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: So Steve walked over to it and UH had to
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: sort of run it down, chasing downhill. Yeah, finally got
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: one in its neck, killed it. Dream one's ready to
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: talk about Tomores. I like that Gray Fox. Oh that
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: was cool. Fox Like, I like asking the boys up
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: down here about running the jaguars, which happens. Yes, yes,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: it does happen. Jay said, we would have probably seen
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: the mountain lion that didn't end up happening. I didn't
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: see mountainlin I didn't even cut a track. Yeah, I
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: saw one maybe kind of mushed track of a line.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: The impression these guys run these cats like if they
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: hear of a cat, one of these uh Vakiras sees
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: one sees a track or something that whoever they know
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: what dogs is gonna run that thing. They got a
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: stuffed one here, kind of I don't know if you
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: call that even a stuff one, but very like Bay,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: it's an attempt at tax during we have a lion
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: outside there. Um Yeah, to Molly's. So we made so
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: today we made venison to Molly's yesterday and today with
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: guidance from Carolina. Yes, uh, we took four shoulders for
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: chunking neck. And keep in mind accou'sti your buck only ways.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: He's like, you know, hun pounds and these things are lean,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: unreal lean gen right now, man, they look like greyhounds
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: because they've been rutting for a while. I think they
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: must have. I think we're kind of towards the tail
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: end of the They got no fat on him. Imagine
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: taking a rolling pan and smashing out a chunk of
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Wrigley spearmint and gum and laying it out, smoothing it
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: out flat. That piece of gum that is now flat
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: after it's been chewed a little bit around. No, I'm saying,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: right out of the rapper and just smashed that thing out.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: That's how much fat my buck hat on it. I
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: was amazed, you know, the fat. They get around like
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: inside their pelvis like a kidney fat and stuff. A
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: couple of little mini globs of fat there, you know,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: in the lower like in the lower digestive like outside
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: of the lower digestive digestive track, you'll find like some fat.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: He had some fat there, some fat around his kidneys.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Nobody fat the one I got, the one we skinned out.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Were you skinned with me? Yea in between the anus
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: and like the end of the tender one right there.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Get some fat there, but nothing on the top of
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: his not lick. And when they're landed, they look like
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: it's like it's looks like a greyhound land there. Yeah,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: just amazed. Just man. They work hard. They don't eat.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: The bucks don't eat when they're rutting. I was worried
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: the beat was gonna taste that good. I was. I was.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I thought for sure it'd be tougher in hell, like
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: a poor condition or something. But oh, go ahead, Well,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I was gonna add. I believe I'm right on this number.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: That white tail deer up in my neck of the woods.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: The number that I heard is that a bucked her
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: in the rut up there can lose up to thirty
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: of their body weight, no ship who somewhere in there
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: give a take. That's amazing. That's like me hunting doll sheet.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: How much you lost? Uh? So we took four full
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: front quarters, so four front legs, boned out neck meat.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: What else were throwing there? We'll cook some tongue the
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: night before, real crispy little tongue, little crispers. What would
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: you call those? I think just cilantro, white onion and
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: a bunch of lime in there, like tongue cracklings. That's
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: a different meal. But we took uh, four deer quarters
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: neck meat, and then Carolina boiled it in a pot
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: for six hours until the bones come out of the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: pot just clean. Yeah. She put a couple of heads
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: of gar like putter, and we picked all that meat.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Didn't take long at all, picked all that meat, picked out,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: there's no fat to pick out, barely to speak of,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: picked out the sinew. It wound up with two big
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: imagine like a big gass salad bowl. Household big gass
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: salad bowl. Two of those full of pick meat. And
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: then we had all that picked and then we took
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: the boil the corn. It's like boiled corn. Yeah, so
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: it's bloated. It's yeah, yeah, it's it's soaked up a
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: bunch of water. That's what they call homony, right, yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: except for this isn't harmony is a part of the kernel.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: The harmony is a part of a kernel, that's right.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: And but so this isn't like a ruptured This hasn't
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: been soaking in water long enough to where the kernel
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: is split. It's it's just the whole. Just to imagine,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: like a bloated corn kernel ran up through a grinder
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: looks like a meat grinder. Like at a passing glance,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: you think you look at a meat grinder, But it's
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: these two plates that that mashed together, and the auger
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: runs the corn out and you just mash and it
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: winds up being like a wet corn meal. Yes, then
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: you take all that meat juice that you use for
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: boiling down the meat and wetton what that even more,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: put in a tunnel lard, healthy dose, put in salt,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: put in way more chili potter than you'd ever think
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: you'd put in there, and blend that batter all up.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Got a part. Then you take your button eat and
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: so you got your pick meat. You take a pot
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and you melt all your lard in the pot and
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: put garlic and onion in that pot and cook it
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: and then discard the onion, which I thought was interesting.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Then put all the meat in, put in buck meat, water,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: chili powder, lard, and make chili colorado again, a lot
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: of chili powder. So you gotta pot that's got chili colorado.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: And then you gotta pop that's got your mashed up
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: corn meal. Then you take corn husks, soaked those in
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: warm water so they repliable, and you lay out the
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: corn husk, and you take a spoon and put a
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: big healthy doll up of the batter the corn meal
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: bat around there and spread it all around. Then you
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: take the chili colorado and lay it in there like
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: you're laying a hot dog on a bun, and you
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: roll it up folded, real special, and then you stack
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: them into a pot and steam them. Man, those suns
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: bitches good. Yeah, that was good. How many do we make? Good?
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: A lot? About seventy seventy two Molly's and had left
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: over meat? Or do we use all of our meat?
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: That's right deep fried up? Jimmy Chong? Did that use
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: up all the meat? No? No, really, there's a lot
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: still more. Yeah, Caroline has probably taking five to ten
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: pounds on them of the chili colorado, just the meat,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: the piston, just the shred of meat. You know. That's
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: what's always tough on the tomaw as your ratio of
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: the um my ease is it my man to Folks
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: call it corn or massa uh to to the meat,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: you know, um, because you always feel like you're stung
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: if you get nothing but the but the asa. Um.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: So they don't. They don't use up as much carna
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: as you think. Um. But holy yeah. And I went
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: round to this evening with several of us. Get yeah,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: when you cross the border back in the US, you
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: can you take your meat home. You can take your
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: meat home on the bone. You can take it home
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: off the bone. What you can't, but you gotta clean that.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: If you want to bring a skull back, you gotta
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: bring the skull back clean. You can't bring a skull
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: across it's not clean, So you gotta boil it and
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: clean it. The meat can go across on the bone.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: We're gonna bring our Tamali's across, no problem. The tricky
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: part is bringing You can't bring a hide, not that
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you can't remember all talking about all those ticks. If
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: you want to travel back in the US and bring
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: a cape, like you want to get the deer mounted,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: you need to get it that every single tick on
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: that cape is gone, and the customs people will check
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: that thing they find a tick, you're back across the border.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: That seems impossible, but I think most of Jay's clients
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: a cross with their capes. Just get there and pick
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: all them ticks. Yeah haven't haven't picked Give someone twenty
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: to pick ticks. You think it's a high percentage. Evacuate
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: the cape once that animals been dead for a while.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Sure that happens a little bit. Yeah, maybe if they
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: haven't attached themselves yet. But I think most of the
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: ones I saw are so bloated they're not going anywhere.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: I think a trick is to freeze them for a
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: little while, make them real cold, you know, and then
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: maybe they come off easier or something. But you've got
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: to go through there. Literally what they find tooth comb
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and a pair of tweezers for a couple of hours.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I've seen a pint and jar full after one okape,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: someone filled a pint jar with ticks. That's cool, uh man,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I would never I mean, you know, nothing against anyone
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: that does. Just personally, I would never mess with that.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Just bring to school home, set it on a school shelf.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: So what else we have to do ni, because we
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: still have to do that tonight. As far as like
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: being legal beagle going across the border with they're just
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: in paperwork. We get to fill out that says what
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: we're bringing across, how much meat? And there is a tag. Yeah,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: you put a tag on the andlers. Is that just
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a customs tag or is that like an actual like
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: game agency tag. Yeah, it comes from the Mexican government.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Really okay tag. But then the US guys will check it.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: And when they asked to inspect our meat, let's pull
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: out our tamali's. Yeah. Like right, dear boy, be like
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: I counted those sens of bit Yeah, that should be
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: about it. But I was gonna say, yeah, that Carolina
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: man that helped us make these tamales. Uh. That's something
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: that Jay set up to you know, That's something I
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: think that anybody can get that comes down here and
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: doesn't huntle with Jay is you can just request that
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: he uh um gets you a cook. So for a
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: very affordable price. We ate some like super good authentic
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Mexican food. Not every night. We brought a lot of
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: our own food, but I think she cooked her own,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: like recipes. What three nights? What else do we have?
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: How many tortosado? We had Italian one night and I
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: put a tortilla in it and I brought down I
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: brought down um some fish jack and she cooked that
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: fish for ut treo trees or trees on eggs. Yeah,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: she made it hunt rids of tortillas. So and she
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: made a big pot of which was amazing, feel like
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: good soup. And what else? We have Chili colorado the
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: first night? The trees though, which is really good dinner
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: and breakfast Papa yes, which is the same on both
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: sides of the border. Yeah, but there's some different. Yeah.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I think that's the fire. She fried him over a
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: huge fire outside. Well, okay, the fried potatoes fire fried potatoes.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: But that was great because it really lets us to
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: focus on the hunting and the production. Yeah, really was.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. I was like, why are we getting
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: to bed so early? And it was because somebody was
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: here getting food ready by the time I got back.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: And you'll be able to you'll be able to watch
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: and see we filmed it, and I presumably filmed beautifully. Dude. Yeah,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: the kind of beautiful process of making to Molly's. Yeah,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: to Molly production. It was a nice scene. You could
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: do it in a day, but it took to It's
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: something it really should be done over two days. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: and we did it, uh like an outdoor kitchen area
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: over wood fire, a lot of it. Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: It's just I can't wait to put I think it's
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: gonna be a really cool scene. Man, It's gonna be
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: really cool scene. Karlyn is awesome, even though she didn't
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: say much. She's kind of like a cool like Grandma
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: style guide passing on the knowledge of to Molly making,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: which is good laborers. I think he appreciated it. Yeah,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: she gave you the unskilled are laughing at us? Yeah,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: all right, couple. Yeah. I had a long time ago,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: had a bunch of musk ox meat and gave musk
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: ox meat to a Guatemalan woman. And our deal that
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: we struck was I would get half my musk ox
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: meat back into Molly's, which is a good deal because
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: you wanted to getting a bigger pile of stuff back
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: then you gave like I gave her like I think
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I gave her like twenty pounds of musk ox meat
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: and I got ten pounds, which is a ton of
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: to Molly's ten pounds meat. And I had wrapped them
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: all up and wrapped them all up and put in
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: my freezer and I just pull thettle suckers out and
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: eat them. They were good, even frozen, even you know, frozen,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: thawed and warmed up, We're wonderful. What's the best way
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: to warm it to Molly? Like reheat it to Molly.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I feel like what I was doing, if I remember,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I feel like I was sticking them in my oven. Mm. Well,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I don't think I was micro and him. I think
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I was throwing him in my oven. I wrapped him
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: in foil, yeah, or just steam him again? Did we
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: steam him? Yeah? That's gonna be yeah, office, I might
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: even have to have another one before I go to bed.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I'll do it. I'll do oh yeah, night. Yeah. All right, Well, Rick,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: what's your um? You know your clothing? Thought? Your concluded?
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: All right? You can go back to you can go
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: back to luring in ladies. No, No, this is that drone. No,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: is that how much fun we had on the mountain.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I mean, it's been a while since I've worked on
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: one of these, uh one of the shows. I was
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: busy this fall, so I sadly didn't get to go
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: on any of the adventures. I missed out on a
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: fog nack happily. Um. But the first hunt I filmed
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: it was Accous deer Hunt with Remy Warren. That was
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: your first foray into film and hunts. Yep, yep, it
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: was yeah, like I've never done it, and I thought
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: it sounds like it would be a good experience, But
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: I didn't realize that it would be. It would be
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: such a something that I look forward to, you know,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: regard it as lowly No, it's actually I think it's
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: kind of in a lot of ways. It's like everything
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: that I like about filmmaking distilled into a very pure form.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Does it does it because because you come out of
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: nature documentaries and whatnot? Does it mean those dudes frown
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: on you? Does that community frown on you because you
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: go out? I don't know, do the savagery I don't.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: I don't really check in. You don't you know what?
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: They don't care about their opinion on it. No, No,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I I feel like I'm more a
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: part of just a filmmaking or documentary community. And then
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I have a niche, but I jump, I do a
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: lot of different things. But I feel that it's it's
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: just a challenging thing to do to to document these
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: hunts in a way that conveys the aesthetic, the narrative,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: everything you guys feel about the hunt. So there's just
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: a lot of complicated factors and you just have to hike,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: hike and keep up. So which I enjoy, I mean
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: compared to a lot of the jobs I'm on. You know,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: if you're in hotels or you just feel pretty bad
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: at the end of every day, Like, yeah, you feel bad.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: And at the end of these days you might feel tired,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: but you feel like, I don't know, if you feel
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: like super Yeah, more like you're on vacation than you're
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: at work. Dude. The other day, we did sorry, we
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: did the we did a hunt, successful hunt, came back,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: did push up, little lunch break club, the Hondo Club.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Everybody got to a Hondo and then we went back
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: out for an evening hunt, hiking all around. Yeah, and
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: then if yeah, you feel better at the end. I
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: mean we're going to tu dear, just the whole, the
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: whole deal. I mean, accuse, you're easily one of my
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: favorite animals to watch, or at least it's my favorite
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: hunt that I've filmed. I just really liked the process
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: glass and it's very there's a lot of patients involved. Yeah,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: I'm just I was. I was happy to get to
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: come back, and it's this is my third goose deer hunt.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: So we're filming, you know which, but I feel like
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: I'm part of the part of the hunt itself. So um, yeah,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: it was great. I really I really liked the just visually, Uh,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: this part of Mexico is really beautiful and different than
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: I thought. Uh every morning and every evening you get
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: just the yeah, great light really now a lot of
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: lots and everything spiny, really cool plat, I mean, everything's
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: cool about it. Yeah. So we're glad you had fun, right, Yeah,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: I like coming along. Thanks. Thanks, And I mean and Cal.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: You know, I got to hang out with Cal most
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: of the time, and he brought him coffee every day,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: so I've always had a warm cup. I mean it
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: just treats me. I mean in a lot of ways.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: It's like it's a it's the relationship between a cameraman
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: and whoever they're filming. It's this interesting dynamic, but especially
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: in a situation like this where I really am a
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: I'm non hunter, I don't really know what I'm like,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: I'm not expert. I've you know, I try. I do
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: my best. But having Cal being like, all right, we're
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: gonna do this, he's very patient, like explains the process
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: or and he does it both on camera to the
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: potential viewer but also to me, So I think he um,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: I just really enjoy kind of being able to hang
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: out with somebody that it's kind of guiding me through
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: the process and hopefully that translates to good TV. Two.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Uh and you know takes the viewer along for a ride.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: But I enjoyed one around with Cal out there. Actually
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: mostly we just sat stared and you spotted some deer,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: very few. I felt bad. I tried hard, but I
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: didn't have a tripod for my It was great. It's
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: super fun. Yeah, dude, I feel bad too every day
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: we're not spotting there here. Yeah, you know, they're there,
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: that's what it's not. Yeah, they were there and I'm
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: just mitten not seeing them. But I know what I'm
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: saying is you're not alone. Even after a dozen of
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: you guys are good at it, I still feel that way. Yeah,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: But I did like when you guys couldn't amongst one another,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: because it happens to tell us, because we just don't
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: spend that much time behind binoculars, or maybe as much time.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: Is when you couldn't find the animal that somebody else sees,
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: it gives me. It's not it doesn't give me pleasure,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: but because I often feel that, like somebody else sees something,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: I'm like, I just can I don't know where you're looking.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: You could explain very clearly where it should be, and
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: you just can't see it. What's what's happening there? A
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: lot of times the one that sees it catches the movement, yeah,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: or catches it out in the open, right, and so
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: then they got a lock on it, and then it
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: moves into a shitty spot yeah, and then other people,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: like the original finder, it gets to the spot where
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: the original finder wouldn't be able to find it either
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: if they didn't already know it was there, and then
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: it gets really frustrating. Yeah, But didn't happen to me,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: But you thought what I'm saying because you want to
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: be like, well, okay, but he's kind of behind that
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: bush and you look, you'll see his foot sticking out.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: It just something about once you notice something, it becomes
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: visually more obvious than But I like seeing that dynamic
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: unfold because you guys are all very good at spotting things,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: and so when you get frustrated and not being able
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: to But I think you're specifically talking about because I
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: feel that way. Talking in Yeah, talking in the whole
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: process is just like I regard that as um, this
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: is this is gonna sound bold, but I think that uh,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: I regret that as one of my specialties talking people,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I feel that I'm I I feel that I do
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: a pretty good job of trying to talk people into
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: where I'm looking. You know why, because I take the time.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: I take the time. I think Cal uh does some
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: big leaps. He doesn't walk you through every tree. I'm like, okay,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: and then there's that tree, and then if you immediately go,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: then there's that tree. And then if you go six
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: o'clock from him, there's that bush. Cal's like, oh and
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: over one thing I would do more consistently. Is the
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: is your o' clock method? O'clock is the only way
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: to play if you don't run, if you're not running,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: center o' clock. To describe what we're talking about, you
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: see some they try and tell people where it is.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: So I will I go to like a feature that
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: everyone would agree with start with, and it could be anywhere.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: To start with something that everyone could agree with, like
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: that big, huge rocky peak and people like got it,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: and then work from there. Okay, it's a good meth
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: go towards seven o'clock. From there until you have an
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: unfair advantage because you're such a you know, a natural
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: teacher and a patient. That does help. It does help,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: no frustration, mark what you got. If you had to
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: take the whole like one thing, one thing from the
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: whole thing, what would that one thing be that has
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: to be my concluder. Yeah, it's kind of like the
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: spirit of concluders are you could come out of the
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: left field. I don't know what you can talk about,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Rick whatever, Well, well, my one thing is is kind
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: of it's it's kind of two part I guess because
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: the one thing that struck me the most about this
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: what was so cool was the the taking of something
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: that's so familiar to me and that I'm so passionate about,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: white tail deer, so known to me, and then throwing
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: that into a situation in a landscape so unknown to me.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: So seeing this this my my my favorite game animal,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: without of doubt, white tail deer here in place that's
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: so foreign, um and new. Was was a lot of fun.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: Everything was new about this, not just the place, but
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: also as we talked about, you know, this type of hunt. Um,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: So that was really really fun, really interesting. Um. But
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: what it did leave me with was a desire to
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: go back to a little bit of the familiar, which
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: was I wanted to be closer to these animals. Like
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: one of the things I love about hunting white tails
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: back home is being yards from them and hearing them
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: and being afraid to move or make the slightest sound,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: different things like that. So coming out of this, I
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: think the biggest thing I'm taking away is is how
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: awesome it was and how I want to try to
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: bow hunt one of these suckers someday People do it. Yeah,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: just just feel like an entirely different approach. Yeah, it
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: would be so different, so difficult, but like this kind
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: of leaves me charged with wanting to try that someday
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: because it would just be neat to try to figure
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: out some way to slip in really close to one.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: I think you'd want to get into a situation where
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: you had a buck, you had like a like a
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: some of that running activity where you got a doll
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: and there's bucks chasing around, and just get down on
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: that zone and see what happens. Yeah, I think it's
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I mean, like you said, certainly the wind getting that
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: zone and then just kind of try to just wait
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: and see what opportunities or if he moves. Yeah, you've
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: spent a lot of time having no idea where they
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: were because you're on their slope with them. Yeah, and
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: you might hear something, but it would be tricky. But
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I mean, I don't you know people do it. Yeah. Well,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: it's like you know, the other day, after I shot
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: my buck, you came up and we had seen this
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: other deer, and then all of a sudden we heard
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: the deer grunting and he came right by us. I mean,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: he must have been within yards probably, but you can
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: never see him. He was downslope enough and that the
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: brush was tall enough and he was small enough probably
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: that right there, probably within bow range, no idea that
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: where it was. Yeah, I had a bucket ten yards.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: We had to be jumping over a road going. He
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: had a dainty, little bad it's a little little guy grunt. Yeah,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: but so cool. And I just really appreciate you guys
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: having me along. I mean, this is like a once
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: in a lifetime opportunity probably for for me or a
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: lot of people. And man, I enjoyed its man something
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: of it. Yeah, hand has my kids call him Cahan,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Hey Cahan. Yeah, just a phenomenal trip, I guess. Observations
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: just the um, the scale, like the grass isn't abnormally tall,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: the the deer just short, like it's knee high grass. Um.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: And I had I definitely had a hard time like
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: making my brain put these these deer at the proper
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: scale over and over again. Um. And they're gorgeous creators. Um.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: Really really had a good time. Really enjoyed the terrain,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: real ankle breaking hills out here though, like all that
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: loose rock round rolling loose rock. Um U. I gotta
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: see a coati which was pretty hilarious. And that that
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: was a good Rick Smith we were hiking up the
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: road and he's like, oh, you know, I think this,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: uh this poop here's a from a quality. Well, so
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: there's a couple that different ways to pronounce it. I
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: don't want to hash it out, go ahead anyway, It's
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: like a souped up raccoon monkey exactly, yes, thank you.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: And uh. I was like, oh yeah, you know, I
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: saw one of those down on the yuk tan on
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: on the side of the road one time. You see
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: them out. They come out at night digging, like looking
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: around beach or shellfish and really cool. And uh, you know,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: later on that day, we're sitting on this ridge, um
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: getting out smarted by these cus deer bucks and I
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: stand up and look and uh, Rick was, you know,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: always a tent of like Rick always was. So he
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: was locked in those binoculars down on the ground and
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, like Rick, you're and
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: I couldn't remember the name, so I'm like, you know,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: Mexican bush monkey, Rick, get up. Um. So that was
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: super fun. It's just a great trip on all of it,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: just odd observations. At this point, I'm getting kind of tired.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: But the meat was fantastic. People were fantastic. I love
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: the the the pace of life. And and uh, Beto
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: and Carolina down here, we're huge parts of the trip.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: Carolina um and uh yeah, stellar crew. You know, one
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: thing that I always love about running around the woods
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: with photographer types is the fact they they like to notice.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: It's their job to notice. Also, like all the all
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: the good extra stuff. You know, it's not just the deer,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: it's the sunrises, the sunsets, the big thorns, the um,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: the bonus critters um and uh, that's really enjoyable, rich powder,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Viva Mexico. Bro, that's all I gotta say. Loving it,
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: loving it. Sunsets, I mean it's fine, man. Yeah, you'd
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: like filming that sunset, dude. Sunsets down here. We're big
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: throbbing drowner dude. Spiritual awakenings in those things. Man, they're crazy.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: It's cool. It's really cool down here. Johnny's I think
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: that's what they called you at the border. Johnny's something
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: like that. No, actually, I think that the guy at
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: the ID wanna we got our tourists visa. I think
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: he actually pronounced it properly. No, man, I was standing
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: there waiting for him to pronounce it. Because I was
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: excited about what would happen, he said. Johnny's mhm, yeah, anyway,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: I thought you did a better job than normal. Uh. Yeah,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: I love cus here. What I like about it when
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: I always leave, I like the fact that I still
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: feel like a real beginner at this thing and um
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: hunting them and uh it's great to have a a
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: quarry out there that I'm unfamiliar with, and that every
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: time I come down for a hunt of like, I
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: feel really uh like like the odds are against me.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: We see a lot of little box I think if
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: you just didn't care, you know, what kind of buck
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: you're gonna shoot, then I wouldn't feel that way because
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: you probably could get that done in a couple of days.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: But if you set out to shoot something that's you
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: know whatever, a little bit bigger than average, older than average,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: however you want to put it, it's uh, it's a
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: real challenge and it's um not easy to do. And
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah. I like that, like being uh
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: just to be just a beginner. It is the kind
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: of thing where you're you're thinking, like, oh man, next year,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna because it since you never feel like you
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: gotta totally figured out. Yeah, I think we stayed down
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: here for two more weeks and guided you know, four
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: guys piece. That would add up pretty quick. Yeah, week
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: at a time here and there, and yeah, don't great,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: it's instantly addicting. My favorite part of the trip was
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: honestly making the watching the tomall He's get made. That
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: was great. Yeah, because it's like, you know, you'd counter
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: people in life, um that you're just not that that
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: you know, you don't really know what their trip is, right,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: and they don't understand, like you don't really understand the
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: details of their life, and you don't and you don't
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: understand the details of their life, and you're probably not
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: even equipped to understand the details of one another's lives.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: And then the language barrier makes it even that that
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: you're especially not gonna understand the details of each other's lives. Um.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: But it was like an empathy there, like like a
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: human empathy or desire to connect. And it's just cool
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: to be able to spend a bunch of time with
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: someone and like learn some food preparation like that, and
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: and it winds up being that you get you just
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: get the sense that like people are enjoying themselves and
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and feeling not entirely different, you know. And and that's
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: the kind of thing, like, you know, to be in
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: a situation where you've it's a strange relationship to have
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: with someone, um, to make someone that you don't know
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: and you you're you're down filming and so you hire
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: someone to do some cooking for you, um, and you
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: can't talk really that that that well, it's just an
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: unusual relationship, right, It's like it's a relationship that that
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: tends to make me like that kind of relationship makes
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: me uncomfortableoks. I feel like there's somehow like an unequal
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: footing in some way. Um. But then to be able
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: to hang out today doing that and watch someone do
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: something and and and uh like do it well and
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: do it very beautifully. I thought it was cool. It
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: was a nice I mean, I love the hunting. You know,
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: the hunting is great. Um, you know, come back many
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: times to do it. We're already talking about come back
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: next year. But like those little connection points I think
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: are pretty cool. It would have been a completely different
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: trip without that, yeah, just would have been and kind
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: of her relationship to you know, attitude about dear meat.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: It's a coveted thing. Yeah, you know it was awesome.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: It was fun to watch. Man. Then just like the
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: no measuring cups, just everything by just eye of ball,
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: just like haven't done it and done it and done
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: it and done it and done it and then um,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: a pair of hands that have seen a tremendous amount
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: of work, not specialized work work. Yeah, like work work. Yeah,
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: m hands like that don't just happen. No. I like
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: looking at all the guys, everybody's hands, they're all worth
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: like a lot of time. Yeah, it's good man. It
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: sets your head right. Some trips kind of set your
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: head right. You know, it's fun, all right, thanks for listening.
