- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. Alright, welcome back
- 0:07Speaker 1: to Real Talk with Mike D. I am the one,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the only, and the original Mike D. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:15Speaker 1: today I want to talk about why I think my
- 0:17Speaker 1: podcast is very similar to a reality show. And I
- 0:22Speaker 1: want you to let me know if you agree. Think
- 0:25Speaker 1: about it. On a reality show, you get to watch
- 0:28Speaker 1: people talk about their lives, their problems, their relationships, their struggles,
- 0:33Speaker 1: their victories, their bad decisions, their good decisions, and sometimes,
- 0:38Speaker 1: their lack of common sense. And honestly, that sounds a
- 0:42Speaker 1: lot like a podcast. Especially this podcast. Because when you
- 0:47Speaker 1: listen to Real Talk with Mighty, you're not listening to
- 0:49Speaker 1: some perfectly polished television character who's got everything figured out. Nope.
- 0:55Speaker 1: You are listening to me, Mike D, a regular guy,
- 0:59Speaker 1: talking about real life. And that's where the comparison to
- 1:03Speaker 1: reality television comes in. Reality shows are supposed to give
- 1:08Speaker 1: you a glimpse into somebody else's world. A podcast can
- 1:11Speaker 1: do exactly the same thing. The difference is, instead of
- 1:17Speaker 1: cameras following me around my house all day, you get
- 1:20Speaker 1: my voice following you around. Maybe you listen to me
- 1:23Speaker 1: in your car. Maybe you listen to me at work.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Maybe you listen to me while you're walking. Heck, maybe
- 1:30Speaker 1: you're listening to me while you're drinking your morning coffee.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And hopefully, you're not listening to me while you're doing
- 1:36Speaker 1: something you're not supposed to be doing. That's funny. But seriously,
- 1:41Speaker 1: a podcast can feel incredibly personal. And that's because you're
- 1:46Speaker 1: hearing somebody talk directly to you. There's no studio audience.
- 1:51Speaker 1: There's no television producer standing behind the camera saying, Okay, Mike,
- 1:55Speaker 1: now pretend you're angry. No, if I'm frustrated, you're going
- 1:59Speaker 1: to hear it. If I'm excited, you hear it. If
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm having a good day or a bad day, you're
- 2:06Speaker 1: going to hear it. That is reality. And that's what
- 2:12Speaker 1: makes this kind of podcast interesting. Now, here's the thing
- 2:17Speaker 1: about reality television. They show you the good stuff, but
- 2:20Speaker 1: they also show you the drama. They show arguments. They
- 2:24Speaker 1: show people struggling. They show people making mistakes. They show
- 2:29Speaker 1: people celebrating. They show relationships falling apart and relationships coming together.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Life is exactly the same way. Nobody wakes up every
- 2:39Speaker 1: morning and says, man, today is going to be absolutely perfect.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Sometimes you wake up tired. Sometimes you wake up stressed.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Maybe you're worried about money. Sometimes you're worried about work.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Maybe you're lonely. And sometimes you're questioning yourself. Sometimes you're
- 2:59Speaker 1: wondering where in the hell your life is going. And
- 3:02Speaker 1: sometimes you're just trying to make it through another day.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, that is reality. And I think that's
- 3:11Speaker 1: one of the reasons podcasts have become so popular. They
- 3:15Speaker 1: don't always have perfection. Sometimes They sound like somebody just talking.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Somebody just stating what's on their mind. Somebody who has
- 3:32Speaker 1: been through some things. Somebody who can sit behind a
- 3:36Speaker 1: microphone and say, yeah, you know what? I've struggled too.
- 3:40Speaker 1: That's powerful. Because suddenly, you're not alone. Another thing that
- 3:46Speaker 1: makes a podcast similar to reality television is that you
- 3:49Speaker 1: can have a basic idea of what you're going to say.
- 3:52Speaker 1: but you never really know where the conversation is going
- 3:56Speaker 1: to go. That's life. You might wake up thinking you're
- 3:59Speaker 1: going to have a normal day, and then something happens.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Someone says something. You get a phone call. Something goes
- 4:06Speaker 1: wrong at work. You get unexpected news, and suddenly your
- 4:10Speaker 1: entire day changes. Sometimes that's what happens during a podcast.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You start with one subject, and five minutes later you're
- 4:20Speaker 1: talking about something completely different. Not necessarily a bad thing.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Sometimes the best conversations happen when you stop trying to
- 4:30Speaker 1: control everything. You just talk. You tell your story. You
- 4:34Speaker 1: say what's on your mind. And you see where it
- 4:36Speaker 1: takes you. That is what I really want Real Talk
- 4:39Speaker 1: with Mike D to be. A place where I can
- 4:42Speaker 1: sit down behind this microphone and just talk. No pretending.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Not trying to make everything sound perfect. Just real conversations.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And when you listen to this podcast, You're getting a
- 4:54Speaker 1: piece of my life. Now you're not getting every single detail.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You're not getting every private moment. But you're getting pieces.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You're getting my thoughts, my opinions, my experiences, my frustrations,
- 5:07Speaker 1: my sense of humor, my hopes and fears and dreams.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And sometimes you're getting me trying to just figure things
- 5:15Speaker 1: out just like everybody else. That's what makes it feel
- 5:20Speaker 1: like a reality show. Except instead of watching me on television,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you're hearing me tell you about it. And honestly, I
- 5:32Speaker 1: kind of like that better. Because television reality shows sometimes
- 5:36Speaker 1: have to create drama. A podcast doesn't. Life provides enough
- 5:42Speaker 1: drama all by itself. Amen. You know, you don't need
- 5:48Speaker 1: a producer when your alarm clock goes off at 4
- 5:50Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning. You don't need a television writer
- 5:53Speaker 1: when the bills show up. You don't need a director
- 5:56Speaker 1: when you're sitting there wondering what you're going to do
- 6:00Speaker 1: with the next chapter of your life. That's real life.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And real life gives us enough material. And ladies and gentlemen,
- 6:09Speaker 1: here's another reason I think podcasts are like reality shows.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The audience becomes part of that experience. When someone watches
- 6:18Speaker 1: a reality show, they start feeling like they know the
- 6:20Speaker 1: people on it. They hear their stories. They watch their struggles.
- 6:25Speaker 1: They celebrate their successes. They get frustrated with them. They
- 6:29Speaker 1: laugh at them. Sometimes they yell at the television. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: podcasts can create that same relationship. Maybe you've listened to
- 6:39Speaker 1: several episodes of Real Talk with Mike D. Maybe you've
- 6:42Speaker 1: heard me talk about stress. Maybe you've heard me talk
- 6:45Speaker 1: about loneliness. Maybe you've heard me talk about money. Or
- 6:49Speaker 1: maybe about work. Maybe you've heard me talk about family
- 6:53Speaker 1: or my dreams. Or maybe, just maybe, you've heard me
- 7:00Speaker 1: make a complete fool of myself talking about something ridiculous.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And I have. And eventually, you're going to start feeling
- 7:09Speaker 1: like you know me. That's a pretty incredible thing. Because
- 7:16Speaker 1: you're not sitting across the table from me. Probably somewhere
- 7:20Speaker 1: completely different. A different state. A different country. A different city.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Maybe you have a different life. But for 10 or
- 7:32Speaker 1: 15 minutes, we are having a conversation. And ladies and gentlemen,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that is powerful. But there's one major difference. Reality television
- 7:46Speaker 1: is often edited. Whereas a podcast can be much more direct.
- 7:53Speaker 1: You're hearing the thoughts come out of my mouth. You're
- 7:55Speaker 1: hearing the pauses. You're hearing the laughs. You're hearing the mistakes.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And sometimes, you're probably hearing me lose my train of thought.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And that's okay. Because that's human. I don't want reality
- 8:10Speaker 1: talk with Mike D to sound like I'm reading a
- 8:12Speaker 1: corporate memo. I do not want every sentence to be perfect.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I don't want to sound like someone else. I want
- 8:21Speaker 1: it to sound like me. Because the whole point of
- 8:25Speaker 1: this podcast is authenticity. It's about saying what you mean
- 8:30Speaker 1: and meaning what you say. It's about being comfortable enough
- 8:34Speaker 1: to admit, I don't have all the answers. Because none
- 8:38Speaker 1: of us do. We are all figuring this thing out together. Now,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I want you all to think about your own life
- 8:49Speaker 1: for a second. Your life has characters. You've got a family.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You've got friends and coworkers. You have people you love.
- 8:59Speaker 1: You have people who drive you absolutely crazy. You've got
- 9:04Speaker 1: unexpected plot twists. You've got good days. You've got bad days.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You've got moments where everything seems to be going great.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And you've got moments where you wonder, what the hell?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Just happen. You've got chapters. Some chapters you never want
- 9:24Speaker 1: to end. Other chapters you can't wait to close. But
- 9:29Speaker 1: sometimes you don't know what's coming next. That, my friends,
- 9:34Speaker 1: is a reality show. Except there's no television network controlling it.
- 9:40Speaker 1: There's no season finale. And unfortunately, there isn't always a
- 9:47Speaker 1: commercial break. That's life. Maybe that's why we connect with
- 9:51Speaker 1: reality shows and podcasts. Because somewhere underneath all the entertainment,
- 9:57Speaker 1: we see ourselves. We hear pieces of our own experiences.
- 10:03Speaker 1: We're realizing that other people struggle too. Other people get lonely.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Other people get scared. Other people have dreams. Other people
- 10:13Speaker 1: screw things up. And other people wake up the next
- 10:17Speaker 1: morning and try again. You know, so when I sit
- 10:25Speaker 1: behind this microphone and start talking, this is my reality.
- 10:28Speaker 1: This is my corner of the world. And I'm inviting
- 10:34Speaker 1: all of you into it. Not because I have everything
- 10:37Speaker 1: figured out. Not because I'm some expert on life. And
- 10:43Speaker 1: definitely not because I have all the answers. I'm inviting
- 10:46Speaker 1: you in because I have something to say. I have
- 10:51Speaker 1: been through a lot in my life. And I know
- 10:55Speaker 1: a lot of you have been through things in your
- 10:56Speaker 1: life as well. And I want you to know you're
- 11:00Speaker 1: not alone. And maybe something I'm talking about connects with you.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Maybe you've been through the same thing. Maybe you're going
- 11:10Speaker 1: through it right now. Maybe you've been afraid to talk
- 11:15Speaker 1: about it. Maybe you thought you were the only person
- 11:17Speaker 1: feeling that way. And then you hear somebody on a
- 11:21Speaker 1: podcast saying, yep, I have been there too. That's the
- 11:27Speaker 1: beauty of this format. A microphone can turn one person's
- 11:32Speaker 1: experience into a conversation with thousands or millions of people.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, that is pretty amazing. That is the
- 11:44Speaker 1: sole reason why I created this podcast. Because I want
- 11:48Speaker 1: people to know they're not alone. I may not have
- 11:52Speaker 1: all the answers. But I've had a lot of trauma
- 11:56Speaker 1: in my life, a lot of hardships, a lot of pain,
- 12:01Speaker 1: a lot of suffering, a lot of good times, but
- 12:04Speaker 1: a whole lot of bad times. And I know people
- 12:07Speaker 1: out there are going through the exact same thing that
- 12:12Speaker 1: I am or have been through. You may live right
- 12:17Speaker 1: down the street. You may be in another state. You
- 12:20Speaker 1: may be in another country. But we're all similar. and
- 12:25Speaker 1: that respect. Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed this podcast.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I hope you found some enjoyment out of it. And
- 12:35Speaker 1: as always, I greatly appreciate you being here. I greatly
- 12:39Speaker 1: appreciate you listening. And until the next episode, please be
- 12:44Speaker 1: the reason someone smiles. Peace! Thank you.
