- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome. Do the favorites the podcast from the Action Network.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Chad Melman. NFL season is over. I crushed, I've dominated.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I was so good and at the end of NFL season,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I like to reflect. I like to take stock. I
- 0:21Speaker 1: like to think about what the podcast can be when
- 0:24Speaker 1: it's not NFL season, when it's not just me and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Scooch going through every single game. And the truth is,
- 0:28Speaker 1: right now, since gambling became legal, every single person is
- 0:32Speaker 1: trying to do a Pis podcast and doing it in
- 0:35Speaker 1: any way that makes them feel distinguished from the other
- 0:38Speaker 1: Picks podcasts. And the truth is, the best podcasts about
- 0:41Speaker 1: picking are on the Action Network. They are Jason Sobel
- 0:44Speaker 1: and Peter Jennings talking about golf. There Colin Wilson and
- 0:47Speaker 1: Stucky and Mike Randall talking about college basketball. We don't
- 0:51Speaker 1: need another Picks podcast right now, so I want to
- 0:53Speaker 1: find a way to expand the funnel of what we do,
- 0:56Speaker 1: broaden the tent, get more people under the umbrella. And
- 0:59Speaker 1: it's plain how topics that are happening every day in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the world of sports impact sports betting, and how sports
- 1:05Speaker 1: betting impacts you guys as fans. So that's what I
- 1:08Speaker 1: want to try to do today. We're gonna tackle a
- 1:10Speaker 1: bunch of topics. We're gonna talk about the six figure
- 1:15Speaker 1: NASCAR bet that the Action Network has made thanks to
- 1:18Speaker 1: our NASCAR editor p J. Walsh, and we introduced some
- 1:21Speaker 1: new voices from here at the Action Network because I
- 1:23Speaker 1: want to talk about gambling the way we talk about
- 1:25Speaker 1: her here, with people who are more obsessed about it
- 1:28Speaker 1: than you are. That's what we're gonna do today. We're
- 1:30Speaker 1: gonna talk about Pete Rose. I wanted to get back
- 1:32Speaker 1: into baseball. We're gonna talk about the XFL. I am
- 1:35Speaker 1: gonna do it with Matt Mitchell, senior producer at the
- 1:38Speaker 1: Action Network, on the phone from Milwaukee. I'm gonna do
- 1:42Speaker 1: it with Colin Wilson, senior Everything writer calling in from Tulsa.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna do with Katie rich Creek, who runs all
- 1:49Speaker 1: of our NFL and Fantasy coverage. Who's calling in from Denver.
- 1:54Speaker 1: What's going on everybody? Matt Mitchell, how you doing, Buddy?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Doing great? Here in America's dairy land, Chad, Katie freezing
- 2:01Speaker 1: but hanging in there. Colin, I mean, I live in Oklahoma.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We had a tornado and then a sleet storm and
- 2:07Speaker 1: then a snowstorm. These two have their regular climates. It's
- 2:10Speaker 1: predictable weather. I live in the armpit of the weather
- 2:14Speaker 1: part of the United States. I mean it, it's always
- 2:16Speaker 1: something new. It's true, you do. And I think you
- 2:18Speaker 1: can describe it not just as the armpit of weather,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but some people would call it the armpit of everything. Absolutely.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And the thing is, people like, why don't you go
- 2:25Speaker 1: in your basements when you have a tornado? Do people
- 2:27Speaker 1: not realize the state of Oklahoma is a floodplain, so
- 2:30Speaker 1: we can't have basements, So we can't hide from the tornadoes.
- 2:33Speaker 1: All right, Well, listen, you can't hide from this podcast either.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Here we go. We're kicking off something entirely new. Here.
- 2:38Speaker 1: The first thing we're talking about, let's call it the
- 2:40Speaker 1: main thing, The main thing, the XFL. The reason we're
- 2:47Speaker 1: talking about the XFL is threefold. One. The ratings were
- 2:51Speaker 1: really big for ABC, ESPN, Fox, means a lot of
- 2:54Speaker 1: people watched two. The handle on the XFL high yer
- 3:00Speaker 1: than it was for the A A F which launched
- 3:02Speaker 1: last year and then famously failed. Number three, they talked
- 3:07Speaker 1: a lot about gambling during the broadcast of the XFL.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I actually found it distracting. I felt like they were
- 3:13Speaker 1: trying too hard. Every other sentence out of Tom Hart's
- 3:17Speaker 1: mouth when he was broadcasting the Dallas St. Louis game,
- 3:21Speaker 1: was talking about the over under, talking about the total,
- 3:23Speaker 1: talking about the first half of owner. They had a
- 3:25Speaker 1: graphic talking about what the future odds were for who's
- 3:28Speaker 1: gonna win the XFL Championship. I love the score bug,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I love how they were leaning into it. Generally, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: loved a lot of things about the broadcast. I didn't
- 3:37Speaker 1: love the incessant conversation. I felt like they're trying too
- 3:40Speaker 1: hard to differentiate from everything else that is going on
- 3:44Speaker 1: in in football broadcasting. Kator rich Creek, give me your take.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I would say that extends to the rest of the
- 3:49Speaker 1: broadcast as well. I appreciate the idea behind the on
- 3:53Speaker 1: field interviews as players are coming off, and they were entertaining. However,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I did ultimately find them distracting. I didn't think they
- 4:00Speaker 1: added a ton of value in the long run. But
- 4:02Speaker 1: at to your point, Chad, I do think that they
- 4:03Speaker 1: were just talking about it betting too much, and really
- 4:06Speaker 1: all I needed was what the lines were at the
- 4:09Speaker 1: top of the broadcast, and if it mattered as the
- 4:12Speaker 1: game was unfolding, But other than having the spread and
- 4:14Speaker 1: the total just on the screen, I don't I don't
- 4:16Speaker 1: think they needed to do a whole lot more than that.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Other than agreeing with me, I think the rest of
- 4:20Speaker 1: your take is horrible. Hey, I watched that live f
- 4:24Speaker 1: bomb and it was it was great. It was entertaining.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I laughed. I enjoyed the moment we're trying. I mostly
- 4:33Speaker 1: I think my qualum was with the player interviews. I
- 4:35Speaker 1: don't think they really want it. I don't really want it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They're not offering me a whole lot in the moment
- 4:40Speaker 1: A well, they could pull that back. God, I can't
- 4:43Speaker 1: believe how much I disagree with you, Kylin Wilson. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: think you would agree with me that I feel like
- 4:47Speaker 1: I'm playing Dana Carvey in the McLaughlin skit in Saturday
- 4:54Speaker 1: Night Live, which Katie informed the other day it was
- 4:57Speaker 1: like she was born today when I told her about this.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But in this case, I actually feel like Dana Carvey
- 5:02Speaker 1: because you're wrong, Katie rich Creek more listen that this
- 5:10Speaker 1: is a beautiful product. It's gonna be great. We need
- 5:13Speaker 1: the announcer to stop talking about the gambling lines because
- 5:16Speaker 1: we have bullshit meters. Those of us that gamble on
- 5:18Speaker 1: games like frequently, like every day, we understand what the
- 5:21Speaker 1: number is. I can't wait we will hit peak gambling
- 5:24Speaker 1: XFL when June Jones goes for a three point conversion
- 5:27Speaker 1: and then he tells the reporter, I did it to
- 5:29Speaker 1: cover the spread. To me, that's going to be just
- 5:31Speaker 1: ratings gold. But you know, from another standpoint, I think
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's a beautiful product. There were only eleven penalties in
- 5:37Speaker 1: four games this weekend. The flow of it, I thought
- 5:40Speaker 1: was much better than an NFL game. From a consumer standpoint,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it was great to watch a twenty five second clock
- 5:46Speaker 1: field position rules on kicking a three point conversion which
- 5:50Speaker 1: nobody went for, and then the stupid coaches went for
- 5:53Speaker 1: one point conversions when obviously expected point says you should
- 5:56Speaker 1: go for two point conversions. I loved it. From a
- 5:58Speaker 1: gambling standpoint. Now, everybody has a little bit of football
- 6:00Speaker 1: team fatigue right now, so I kind of wish this
- 6:02Speaker 1: was July and August. But other than that, I thought
- 6:04Speaker 1: it was a great product. Matt Mitchell, did you bet
- 6:06Speaker 1: on the XFL. Yeah, of course I did. It was
- 6:09Speaker 1: a thing with a result, and therefore was was eligible
- 6:13Speaker 1: to be gambled upon. And if I'm going to bet
- 6:15Speaker 1: on the things like you know, the birth of my
- 6:17Speaker 1: own children, I'm certainly gonna bet on men playing football.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I agree with some of the things said here. One
- 6:22Speaker 1: of the interesting things is the player and coaches in
- 6:24Speaker 1: game interviews is always a hot button for me, just
- 6:26Speaker 1: because I always find that distasteful because they're being paid
- 6:30Speaker 1: to play a game, whether that's baseball or football or
- 6:32Speaker 1: whenever they interviewed them while it's still going on. I
- 6:34Speaker 1: don't like when they blow the lines of media obligations
- 6:37Speaker 1: and the actual sport. But in terms of the XFL's existence,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I think it's delightful in that I'm always looking for
- 6:43Speaker 1: something else to gamble on. I don't have to, but
- 6:45Speaker 1: it's nice to have more things on the menu. I'd
- 6:48Speaker 1: like to treat my gambling appetite with the more of
- 6:51Speaker 1: a waffle house menu and less of a small plate
- 6:54Speaker 1: tapas restaurant and on. Like Katie, also, I could remember
- 6:57Speaker 1: the original XFL debut um. She was probably negative fourteen
- 7:01Speaker 1: years old when that happened, but it was awful. It
- 7:03Speaker 1: was not a good product. In this I'm happy to
- 7:05Speaker 1: see it was a big step in the right direction.
- 7:07Speaker 1: So I had dinner with someone last night. I can't
- 7:09Speaker 1: say who, but I will tell you they were asking
- 7:13Speaker 1: me all these questions about gambling on the XFL, asking me,
- 7:16Speaker 1: how do you know anything? How are bookmakers making these lines?
- 7:19Speaker 1: Colin is like the most experienced, most professional gambler of
- 7:23Speaker 1: this quartet. How would you even consider handicapping something like
- 7:27Speaker 1: the XFL. And why would you other than you know,
- 7:30Speaker 1: Mitchell being a true du gen and needing to bet
- 7:32Speaker 1: on something. What's your take on that? Well, of course,
- 7:35Speaker 1: every coach and every quarterback has an assigned point value.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I mean, yes, Matt mcgloyan has a point value. June
- 7:41Speaker 1: Jones has a point value. And that's where the point
- 7:43Speaker 1: spreads came into existence. Now where they came up with
- 7:45Speaker 1: the totals? And I know the one Vegas book that
- 7:47Speaker 1: came up with a total of forty and that thing
- 7:49Speaker 1: took a rocket ship up to fifty two and a half.
- 7:51Speaker 1: With these rules in mind, this is gonna be a
- 7:54Speaker 1: crapshoot for bookmakers. They're gonna be blindfolded and throwing a
- 7:57Speaker 1: dart when they look at some of these totals. It's
- 7:59Speaker 1: gonna get better over time. Players are gonna get better,
- 8:02Speaker 1: the coaches are gonna get better. But you know, at
- 8:04Speaker 1: the same time, I'm staring at box scores right now.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I can see that the Vipers went over for in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the red zone, and and people don't think Trustman can
- 8:11Speaker 1: call an offense. He can, And so you know that
- 8:13Speaker 1: the bookmakers are going to be trying to be smart
- 8:15Speaker 1: about plays per game and yards and then the rules.
- 8:18Speaker 1: But I think they did a really bad job with
- 8:20Speaker 1: totals in the first week. These players haven't played in
- 8:22Speaker 1: one to three years, the coaches haven't coached in years,
- 8:24Speaker 1: so the nerves should be out by now. I think
- 8:26Speaker 1: some points are gonna roll in. I cannot believe we
- 8:29Speaker 1: just did a podcast where you're like, the Vipers were
- 8:33Speaker 1: over for four in the red zone. Everyone thinks Mark
- 8:36Speaker 1: Trustman can't call a play in the red zone. Of
- 8:39Speaker 1: course he can. I cannot believe that was just a
- 8:42Speaker 1: take for a team that has played one game in
- 8:45Speaker 1: a league that did not exist eighty hours ago. If
- 8:49Speaker 1: there's an edge in the market, I don't care what
- 8:50Speaker 1: the sport is. I don't care if it's a hot
- 8:52Speaker 1: dog any contest, Bandy I don't care if it's StarCraft
- 8:55Speaker 1: two or Legal Legends. I'll bet on it if there's
- 8:58Speaker 1: an edge. Katie, you watched a lot of XFL this weekend.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You ran our coverage heading into the weekend. If you
- 9:03Speaker 1: were betting right now on a team to win the
- 9:06Speaker 1: XFL title, who would it be? On our preview podcast
- 9:10Speaker 1: of XFL last week, I know Seawan Corner talked a
- 9:12Speaker 1: lot about the Vipers being number one in his power ratings.
- 9:15Speaker 1: They were favored going into the season. They lost terribly
- 9:18Speaker 1: in Week one, and now they're down to plus six
- 9:20Speaker 1: hundred at FANDEL, So there's a lot of volatility in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the futures market obviously, just coming out of Week one
- 9:25Speaker 1: based on those first four games. Chris Raybond actually made
- 9:28Speaker 1: a good point about the Vipers and that they are
- 9:30Speaker 1: at home for three of their final five games and
- 9:33Speaker 1: there was significant home field advantage in Week one. Average
- 9:37Speaker 1: scoring margin for home teams was eleven and a half
- 9:39Speaker 1: points um and they went three and one against the spread.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So I do think that will factor in down the
- 9:43Speaker 1: stretch for them. So I think if you're looking to
- 9:45Speaker 1: buy a law on a team right now, even though
- 9:47Speaker 1: the first week example, size was not great for the Vipers.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I think it's worth taking a fire on them. Not now, though,
- 9:52Speaker 1: just let me energy it real quick. They're going to Seattle,
- 9:54Speaker 1: longest travel you could possibly have an All XFL and
- 9:57Speaker 1: I don't think Seattle was as bad as they showed
- 9:59Speaker 1: in Week one, But the Vipers have problems on the
- 10:01Speaker 1: road here. I don't know what the weather is gonna
- 10:02Speaker 1: be in Seattle, probably rain. But if we can get
- 10:05Speaker 1: an O in two Vipers team where they've just whipped
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the red zone two weeks in a row, it's
- 10:09Speaker 1: gonna be such a great number next week. That is
- 10:11Speaker 1: a very fair point. Collen, Oh my god, that is
- 10:14Speaker 1: the most class at Colin Wilson look ahead. I've heard
- 10:17Speaker 1: you make the same point about Illinois basketball and the
- 10:20Speaker 1: futures in Illinois being a better value after the end
- 10:23Speaker 1: of February before they get into the conference tournament because
- 10:25Speaker 1: their February schedule is so hard. That is as inside
- 10:29Speaker 1: as it gets Colin Wilson. I'm almost speechless at the analysis.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It happens across all the sports. People see and then
- 10:36Speaker 1: people want to bet. So when they see Houston and
- 10:38Speaker 1: June Jones score all these points, they think this is
- 10:40Speaker 1: the best team. I should bet them now. And it's
- 10:42Speaker 1: the same thing with college basketball. Teams just don't do
- 10:44Speaker 1: well on the road and certain conferences like the Big Ten,
- 10:47Speaker 1: it's been a huge home road split, and you have
- 10:49Speaker 1: to be able to look at when the pitfalls and
- 10:52Speaker 1: where the peaks of the schedule are going to be
- 10:53Speaker 1: and know when the right time to buy is. It's
- 10:55Speaker 1: not about picking the right team, it's about picking the
- 10:57Speaker 1: right value at the right time. All right, Matt, we
- 10:59Speaker 1: get you an assignment. You are our senior producer. You
- 11:02Speaker 1: live in the middle of nowhere, so there's not much
- 11:04Speaker 1: for you to do for us here at the Action Network.
- 11:06Speaker 1: So I'm constantly trying to think of things that will
- 11:09Speaker 1: keep you occupied. What did I assign you? Did you
- 11:12Speaker 1: assign me you? You told me to quote, hit the
- 11:15Speaker 1: streets of Milwaukee and find out what totally normal Midwestern
- 11:18Speaker 1: idiots think about the XFL. That was your I would
- 11:21Speaker 1: never call anyone in the Midwest, and even people in
- 11:24Speaker 1: Milliwauke idiots. Being a mid Westerner myself and having spent
- 11:28Speaker 1: a lot of time in the state of Wisconsin, I
- 11:31Speaker 1: think you should have been that statement. I certainly didn't
- 11:33Speaker 1: share the name of the segment with my fellow milwaukeein's
- 11:37Speaker 1: here in the paris of the Midwest, but they were
- 11:38Speaker 1: more than happy to talk about the XFL. All right,
- 11:41Speaker 1: let's go here. We got we've heard from gambling experts,
- 11:46Speaker 1: but what about everybody else. Let's talk with totally normal
- 11:51Speaker 1: Midwestern idiots. What did you think of the debut of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the XFL. I don't even know what the XFL is.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Is that sound like something you would like? Absolutely not.
- 12:03Speaker 1: What is it? What does it sound like? It sounds
- 12:06Speaker 1: like a really intense NFL. It's like video game football.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That does not sound attractive to you. No, I don't
- 12:12Speaker 1: think so. I think my husband would love it, though.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Every NFL preseason ends and I think to myself, where
- 12:18Speaker 1: can I get some more of that hot Matt mcgloyan action.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Oh baby, I love the XFL. I don't like it
- 12:24Speaker 1: this idea Bush shows it will stop it because I
- 12:28Speaker 1: know I'm only interesting to see you on the NFL.
- 12:31Speaker 1: This is a really demanding the game and once in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the weekend. That's what I think about it. Well, I
- 12:36Speaker 1: think it's hopefully it's gonna go over for them. I
- 12:39Speaker 1: don't hope they're gonna be bucking the NBA. They're gonna
- 12:41Speaker 1: be bucking marchman Is Pictures and catches report this week.
- 12:44Speaker 1: We'll see how far it goes. But I think it
- 12:47Speaker 1: might be a good idea to have a feeder into
- 12:48Speaker 1: the NFL. Well, I watched it, and now I don't
- 12:52Speaker 1: have to watch it anymore, all right, Matt, that was
- 12:58Speaker 1: as riveting as I expected to be. Let's move on
- 13:03Speaker 1: the next thing. The next thing. Last week, Pete Rose
- 13:11Speaker 1: petitioned Major League Baseball for reinstatement because of the astros
- 13:16Speaker 1: cheating scandal. If you are amongst the people who feels
- 13:20Speaker 1: like one plus one did not equal to with Pete
- 13:24Speaker 1: Rose's logic, you can include me in your group. Guys,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I'm not getting this. I feel like Pete Rose is
- 13:30Speaker 1: not doing himself any favors. But I do think the
- 13:32Speaker 1: fact that MLB is starting to think about gambling will
- 13:36Speaker 1: cause people to start to rethink how they feel about
- 13:39Speaker 1: Pete Rose being banned from baseball. Matt Mitchell, tell me
- 13:42Speaker 1: what you think of Pete Rose trying to do this.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I think the timing is interesting, The logic of the
- 13:47Speaker 1: petition is is interesting. It doesn't necessarily carry water with me,
- 13:51Speaker 1: but the fact that he's held out of the Hall
- 13:53Speaker 1: of Fame just seems silly. I have I have some
- 13:56Speaker 1: friends that worked for the Hall of Fame, and they're
- 13:57Speaker 1: always quick to remind you that it's amused see him,
- 14:00Speaker 1: which is definitely the kind of thing a nerd would say.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But it's also true. It's it's not a Hall of Fame,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and always in the traditional sense. It's it's focused on
- 14:07Speaker 1: being a museum and as a historical figure. Pete Rose's
- 14:11Speaker 1: integral to baseball history more than almost any of its
- 14:14Speaker 1: other inductees, with a few exceptions. So the fact that
- 14:17Speaker 1: he's kind of a huge piece of ship doesn't mean
- 14:20Speaker 1: he should be precluded from being in the Hall of Fame.
- 14:23Speaker 1: If being a sexist or a racist, or a monster
- 14:26Speaker 1: or a gambler or whatever kept you out of the
- 14:27Speaker 1: Hall of Fame, it it had a lot fewer members. Anyway,
- 14:30Speaker 1: he just did a really bad job of covering his
- 14:32Speaker 1: tracks and was kind of unapologetic about it, and they
- 14:35Speaker 1: want to keep Mountain. I get it, but it certainly
- 14:37Speaker 1: seems like it's high time for them to say screw
- 14:40Speaker 1: it and just let him in. Katie Pete Rose, bad timing,
- 14:44Speaker 1: bad idea, what say you bad timing and the logic
- 14:49Speaker 1: doesn't make total sense. They're not perfect one one comparisons.
- 14:52Speaker 1: But ultimately, if the heart of the issue is that
- 14:55Speaker 1: what the Astros did and what Rose did jeopardize the
- 14:58Speaker 1: integrity of the game, then he does have a valid
- 15:01Speaker 1: argument that his lifetime band does look a little bit
- 15:03Speaker 1: unfair compared to how the MLB ultimately handled Hinchion in
- 15:07Speaker 1: lu Now, wow, Katie making a little bit of a
- 15:10Speaker 1: comeback after your horrible XFL take. I like how you've
- 15:13Speaker 1: found in the connection there. I had to bounce back,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and you did. You did because you were losing this podcast.
- 15:19Speaker 1: But now you've climbed back in Kylie Wilson, let's see
- 15:21Speaker 1: if you can take the lead. I hate to be
- 15:23Speaker 1: a party pooper here and I hate to, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: crap all over Matt's take, but absolutely not. He should
- 15:27Speaker 1: not be in the Hall of Fame. And I coached
- 15:29Speaker 1: thirteen year old baseball. I show my son Pete Rose
- 15:31Speaker 1: and George Brett on how to dive into third base.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You know, how to play the game as hard as possible.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I mean, the problem is he bet on MLB every
- 15:39Speaker 1: single day of six as a player, and a coach.
- 15:42Speaker 1: He even bet on the Reds. Now it showed that
- 15:44Speaker 1: he didn't bet against the Reds, but he bet on
- 15:46Speaker 1: the Reds. Reinstating Pete is one thing, but the Hall
- 15:48Speaker 1: of Fame isn't actually going to vote him in. I mean,
- 15:50Speaker 1: there's still a voting process. But reinstating Pete tells all
- 15:53Speaker 1: athletes it's okay to bet on sports, including your own team. Oh,
- 15:57Speaker 1: here's a notebook. He bet on the Reds every day.
- 15:59Speaker 1: As a code and a player, he could make decision
- 16:02Speaker 1: whether he was at first base or not, or he
- 16:04Speaker 1: was just going to coach the game, and then he
- 16:05Speaker 1: get bet on the game and he bet two thousand apiece.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So absolutely not. If Pete had only bet on the NFL,
- 16:10Speaker 1: or only bet on the n b A, I would
- 16:12Speaker 1: be way more sympathetic. But when it's a team you
- 16:14Speaker 1: coach and play on, no way, I'm sorry. Do you
- 16:17Speaker 1: bet on your earth thirteen year old kids baseball games?
- 16:20Speaker 1: With my assistant coach, we do. We bet individually as
- 16:23Speaker 1: each player comes up to bat, whether he sees a
- 16:24Speaker 1: second strike, because these kids just they can't take a pitch.
- 16:29Speaker 1: What are the stakes? I have more cash on me
- 16:32Speaker 1: than than my assistant coach. My purse isn't coach is
- 16:34Speaker 1: a pastor, so he's got like ones to you know,
- 16:36Speaker 1: he's got some quarters in his pocket, will bet for
- 16:38Speaker 1: so he likes to bet. He doesn't like tell his wife.
- 16:41Speaker 1: He doesn't like to tell the congregation that he bets.
- 16:43Speaker 1: But everybody in the South goes to church and they bet,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and they won't tell you that they bet and drink,
- 16:47Speaker 1: but they do. So you just outed your pastor as
- 16:51Speaker 1: being a better on thirteen year old baseball and kind
- 16:55Speaker 1: of went after him for how much money he's got. Yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 1: but the thing is is he's he's subscribed to the
- 16:59Speaker 1: Action Network podcast, not to the favorite So as long
- 17:01Speaker 1: as I don't get a prescribe the favorites, I have
- 17:03Speaker 1: a good jap make sure he never learns about the favorites.
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know what I love about the Action Network the
- 17:10Speaker 1: fact that just about everybody bets on everything. And that's
- 17:13Speaker 1: the whole point. I would say, we have more meetings
- 17:16Speaker 1: interrupted by deep size from Mike Leeboff, one of our editors,
- 17:20Speaker 1: then we have anything else. I'll be in front of
- 17:23Speaker 1: a white board, I'll be making a grand speech. I'll
- 17:26Speaker 1: be inspiring our team and then I don't know where
- 17:29Speaker 1: Leeboff will just go, and I'm thinking to myself, he's
- 17:33Speaker 1: taking it in And then I realized Leeboff has like
- 17:37Speaker 1: money on darts, or he's got money on cricket, or
- 17:40Speaker 1: he's got money on tennis, and it's airing in the
- 17:43Speaker 1: middle of the day. Last week, Lee Boff was all
- 17:46Speaker 1: over snooker. Here's his story. So this was the text
- 17:51Speaker 1: I got, Well, how was at work? It was from
- 17:53Speaker 1: an associate of mine who I've known from backing my
- 17:56Speaker 1: bartending days. And when you work at the kind of
- 17:59Speaker 1: bar I did, You're gonna come into contact with all
- 18:02Speaker 1: sorts of characters and most of them are gonna left
- 18:04Speaker 1: to gamble. This guy was no different. He was also
- 18:06Speaker 1: another bartender. He was an Irish guy, and to be honest,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I kind of trust him with my life. So when
- 18:12Speaker 1: he told me that he heard from his source overseas
- 18:16Speaker 1: that there was about to be a snooker match in
- 18:18Speaker 1: England where one of the players had a really bad
- 18:20Speaker 1: case of the gout, I dropped everything at work and
- 18:23Speaker 1: got ready to bet it. It was a personal bet
- 18:26Speaker 1: for me because back on New Year's Eve two thousands sixteen,
- 18:30Speaker 1: my foot was throbbing. It was so bad that I
- 18:33Speaker 1: couldn't press down on the gas pedal in the car.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I had to have somebody drive me to the doctor
- 18:37Speaker 1: on New Year's Eve and he comes into the office.
- 18:41Speaker 1: He looks at me and he says, congratulations, son, you're
- 18:44Speaker 1: the youngest patient I've ever had to diagnose with the gout.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So that rocked my world. And then now knowing that
- 18:50Speaker 1: I could finally come full circle and beat gout by
- 18:53Speaker 1: betting against it, I was just jumping at the chance.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I was so excited that I told everybody at the
- 18:57Speaker 1: Action Network. I said, Hey, look, there's this guy and
- 18:59Speaker 1: he's got the bag gout and he's gonna try to
- 19:01Speaker 1: play through it in its snooker match tomorrow. We should
- 19:04Speaker 1: probably all fade him. And since I work with a
- 19:06Speaker 1: bunch of freaks, everybody jumped on it. Despite none of
- 19:09Speaker 1: us knowing the rules of snooker. We all thought, you
- 19:11Speaker 1: know what, let's go for it. It's not every day
- 19:13Speaker 1: you get to bet against the guy because he's got
- 19:15Speaker 1: the gout. And it looked good at first. Like our guy,
- 19:17Speaker 1: the guy with the gout, He's sitting in the corner,
- 19:20Speaker 1: his legs extended, he looked like he was suffering through
- 19:22Speaker 1: an attack. But it turns out this was the snooker
- 19:25Speaker 1: equivalent of the Jordan flu game, and we got buried.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Some of my colleagues were mad at me for the tip,
- 19:30Speaker 1: But the important thing is we got to cross off
- 19:34Speaker 1: betting against somebody with gout in snooker from our gambling
- 19:38Speaker 1: bucket list. And you don't get to do that every day.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Thank you, Leeboff. All Right, we got another thing. This
- 19:46Speaker 1: one is serious. Okay, another thing. Baylor is the number
- 19:53Speaker 1: one team in the country. They've got as of right now,
- 19:56Speaker 1: it's only one game winning streak, which is one shy
- 19:59Speaker 1: of the Big te record that Kansas set in. One
- 20:02Speaker 1: of their best players is mac Otigue. Last week, Macote
- 20:07Speaker 1: was at the free throw line. He had a chance
- 20:09Speaker 1: to put Baylor up by six points in a game
- 20:13Speaker 1: in which the spread was five. He missed a free throw.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Baylor still easily won the game. They did not cover,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and Macote experienced what it's like to get hazed by
- 20:25Speaker 1: gambling twitter, something that I know all of us experience
- 20:29Speaker 1: on a regular basis. It is not pretty. And then
- 20:32Speaker 1: Jeff Goodman, a stadium very good college basketball reporter, did
- 20:36Speaker 1: a piece in which he sort of commented on mac
- 20:39Speaker 1: otigue and people on Twitter coming after him for this,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and made a connection to the fact that sports betting
- 20:45Speaker 1: being illegal is now something people are going to have
- 20:46Speaker 1: to deal with on a more regular basis. For this,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I don't agree with the behavior. I don't necessarily agree
- 20:52Speaker 1: with Jeff's premise either, because this has been going on forever.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's been going on for fantasy, and there's been gamblers
- 20:57Speaker 1: on Twitter long before gambling was legal. So Katie rich Creek,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'm going to give you one more chance to take
- 21:03Speaker 1: a very big lead in the podcast. I want to
- 21:05Speaker 1: hear you take on Jeff's angle on this. I think
- 21:08Speaker 1: you're right, and I don't want you to think I'm
- 21:11Speaker 1: only agreeing with you to say in your favor. But yeah, no,
- 21:16Speaker 1: I don't think it's it's anything new. However, I do
- 21:19Speaker 1: think generally speaking, it's one thing to complain about a
- 21:22Speaker 1: player for botching your bet or swinging your fantasy matchup
- 21:25Speaker 1: on Twitter, but it's entirely different thing to slide into
- 21:28Speaker 1: his d m s, which is what was happening in
- 21:29Speaker 1: this case. And if you are a grown adult, going
- 21:33Speaker 1: as so far as to slide into the d m
- 21:35Speaker 1: s of a nineteen or twenty year old kid. That's
- 21:37Speaker 1: a tough look. And your problems extend far past losing
- 21:40Speaker 1: that that Katie going after. Just people sliding into d
- 21:43Speaker 1: ms generally, that's an interesting thing. Matt, as someone who
- 21:46Speaker 1: before you were married and probably slid into people's d
- 21:49Speaker 1: m s, do you feel sensitive to that? Yeah. I
- 21:51Speaker 1: don't like Twitter scolds anymore than I like gambling scolds,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and generally I'd like to support people who want to
- 21:58Speaker 1: attack on paid amateurs online. But I it is so
- 22:02Speaker 1: incredibly distasteful to aim directly at the players and to
- 22:06Speaker 1: tag them and to slide to their damns. That is
- 22:08Speaker 1: that is gross. Like, like I have a in my neighborhood,
- 22:10Speaker 1: we have a we have an alley behind the house
- 22:12Speaker 1: and that's where everybody goes into their garages. And when
- 22:14Speaker 1: it snows a lot, which does all the time in Wisconsin,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I have a neighbor named Dan, and Dan snow blows
- 22:20Speaker 1: the front of all the garages so everyone can get in.
- 22:23Speaker 1: And no one asks him to do this, that one
- 22:25Speaker 1: pays him to do this. It's just a real nice guy,
- 22:27Speaker 1: good neighbor. If Dan opened my garage door, and he
- 22:30Speaker 1: filled my garage with that snow just because he was
- 22:33Speaker 1: mad at me. I would talk tons of ship about
- 22:36Speaker 1: Dan all over the neighborhood. I wouldn't yell at him, though,
- 22:40Speaker 1: because he wasn't getting paid to do that. That's not
- 22:43Speaker 1: his job. You can get screamed at for anything you
- 22:46Speaker 1: get paid to do. But if you're an unpaid amateur athlete,
- 22:49Speaker 1: that's a great reason to pay these kids. Because first,
- 22:52Speaker 1: Rodeo Betters, I mean Macot got an eleven dollar VENMO
- 22:55Speaker 1: request from a gambler. Eleven dollars this guy blew up
- 22:59Speaker 1: ma seo taken were after the game. If you're so
- 23:01Speaker 1: mad about eleven dollars, I remember my first bat to like,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you gotta grow up, Colin. Would you yell at your
- 23:07Speaker 1: pastor if he gave it a bad sermon? I would
- 23:11Speaker 1: ask the collection plate to stop in my lap so
- 23:13Speaker 1: I could take it off he gave a bad sermon.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I mean, listen, if I had eleven dollar eleven dollar
- 23:18Speaker 1: VENMO request, if I had eleven dollars, every time a
- 23:20Speaker 1: college basketball player screwed me on a point spread by
- 23:23Speaker 1: like one point, I could pay off Bret bielim As
- 23:26Speaker 1: Arkansas buy out. That's how much money I would have.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It's a new reality. But the gamblers were here before.
- 23:30Speaker 1: They've all we've always been around years before this. One instance,
- 23:34Speaker 1: Nick bro Set was an LSU running back that fell
- 23:36Speaker 1: down at the goal line and Arkansas covered seven and
- 23:39Speaker 1: a half just shot the line. He does not want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to score. There's some folks very game. Oh boy. That
- 23:51Speaker 1: was a couple of weeks before Todd Gurley decided to
- 23:53Speaker 1: do the same thing against the Packers. Right fall down
- 23:55Speaker 1: at the goal line. And this is just our new reality.
- 23:57Speaker 1: It's just it's just getting more attention now because ambling
- 24:00Speaker 1: is becoming legalized. This has always been going on. Everybody's
- 24:03Speaker 1: used to growing up in a culture where things are
- 24:05Speaker 1: so hush, right, gambling was taboo. You can't talk about
- 24:09Speaker 1: it out loud. You know. Even my tax attorneys like
- 24:11Speaker 1: having I mean, finally, my tax attorneys like asking me
- 24:14Speaker 1: questions because of the new legalization of stuff. So it's
- 24:16Speaker 1: just a new world that we live in and there's
- 24:18Speaker 1: more exposure to the idiots. And I think as a
- 24:21Speaker 1: sports gambling community, we need to be happy that all
- 24:23Speaker 1: this is being legalized. But at the same time, we
- 24:25Speaker 1: have a responsibility to educate and patrol our community. I
- 24:29Speaker 1: might turn my take around a little bit. I'm going
- 24:31Speaker 1: to do about ninety degrees because I do think that
- 24:35Speaker 1: maybe what Jeff is saying in this piece is that
- 24:38Speaker 1: the expansion of gambling might create more of an opportunity
- 24:41Speaker 1: for people to go after athletes who caused them to
- 24:44Speaker 1: miss out on winning bets, is that there's more amateurs
- 24:48Speaker 1: in the market, and amateurs don't know how to behave
- 24:51Speaker 1: they don't know how to handle winning, they don't know
- 24:52Speaker 1: how to handle losing. Colin, I think that's kind of
- 24:54Speaker 1: what you're saying, right. Yeah, there's not an exponential increase
- 24:57Speaker 1: in wise guys, and there's not an exponential increase of
- 24:59Speaker 1: people that are do in this correctly. There's an exponential
- 25:02Speaker 1: increased of new gamblers that are new to betting and
- 25:05Speaker 1: don't know how to handle themselves, and they act immature
- 25:07Speaker 1: when they lose bets, and they like to brag too
- 25:09Speaker 1: much when they win. So that's just the new world
- 25:12Speaker 1: we live in. And Colin, I do want to point
- 25:14Speaker 1: out that I think you and I and everyone at
- 25:16Speaker 1: the Action Network is totally okay with feeling victimized by
- 25:20Speaker 1: and screaming at players and coaches like I After that
- 25:23Speaker 1: U mass Acron football game, I tweeted Isaiah Rodgers of
- 25:27Speaker 1: UMass might be the worst fucking defensive player in America.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I didn't tag him, but he was the first person
- 25:33Speaker 1: to like that tweet. Yes, but the point is, I
- 25:35Speaker 1: don't you don't reach out and try to find those
- 25:37Speaker 1: people to say to their faces, like my neighbor, did
- 25:39Speaker 1: you just talk ship behind their backs? And then event
- 25:41Speaker 1: minutes open. Well, I think I think the important thing
- 25:44Speaker 1: from my Twitter standpoint is that when I see some
- 25:47Speaker 1: funky stuff happening in a game, I will clip it
- 25:50Speaker 1: and I will put it on my Twitter feet and
- 25:52Speaker 1: I will say, wow, look at this. This is awfully strange.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And by the way, here was the total or here
- 25:57Speaker 1: was the points? Right? You just says in the really
- 26:00Speaker 1: interesting colin, which was your clipping stuff saying it's really interesting.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Is the inference or the connection is supposed to be
- 26:08Speaker 1: that you think there was something in terms of a
- 26:12Speaker 1: fixed You thought someone was aware of what the point
- 26:14Speaker 1: spread was. You thought someone was aware of what the
- 26:16Speaker 1: total was. Don't act like these coaches don't know what
- 26:18Speaker 1: the point spread is? Because Lane Kiffin up by what seven?
- 26:22Speaker 1: With a point spread a five and a half or
- 26:23Speaker 1: six ran his punter purposefully through the end zone, causing
- 26:28Speaker 1: a safety, beating Marshall by five. He acknowledged it, got
- 26:31Speaker 1: hopped on Twitter and made a joke about it. So
- 26:34Speaker 1: these coaches absolutely know what the point spread is, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: you know it didn't change the way that Lane coached
- 26:39Speaker 1: the game, but they're aware of exactly what the number is.
- 26:42Speaker 1: All I well, listen, speaking of people who know gambling,
- 26:44Speaker 1: we got one more segment here. We opened it up
- 26:46Speaker 1: to my followers on Twitter and I said to them,
- 26:49Speaker 1: come on the show. If you've got a gambling specific
- 26:53Speaker 1: trivia question that you think can stump our team, and
- 26:58Speaker 1: they do it, we're going to give them a free
- 27:02Speaker 1: Action Network Edge subscription. All right, joining us now our
- 27:06Speaker 1: very first contestant in our gambling trivia segment, which we
- 27:10Speaker 1: haven't even named yet, Mitchell, we gotta get on. How
- 27:12Speaker 1: we gotta think of a name for this. I think
- 27:13Speaker 1: you might have put one in the run down and
- 27:15Speaker 1: you don't know splits. I don't. I don't think I
- 27:18Speaker 1: like that. We're gonna come up. We're gonna come up
- 27:21Speaker 1: with the new name. Our first contestant is Connor Lynch,
- 27:25Speaker 1: who was one of the many people that DM me,
- 27:27Speaker 1: but I liked his question the best Welcome to the
- 27:31Speaker 1: favorite podcasts, Good to be here on Law School at
- 27:35Speaker 1: the University of Missouri, Go Tigers. Yeah, there we go,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and Connor gets to the pleasure of driving down to Pittsburgh, Kansas,
- 27:42Speaker 1: just an hour away and registering for points bet and
- 27:44Speaker 1: be able to play us a bet on his phone legally. Yes,
- 27:47Speaker 1: there we go. Made a couple of trips to Iowa
- 27:49Speaker 1: over to Council Bluff to get some stuff in there.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So doing what we gotta do? What do you like
- 27:54Speaker 1: to gamble on? Mostly football, hockey, the Over and pretty
- 27:58Speaker 1: much anything I can find? So, oh, kinnor you'd fit
- 28:01Speaker 1: in fine here at the Action Network. All right, kind
- 28:04Speaker 1: of listen. You sent in a trivia question last night.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I have not shared it with our panelists. If you
- 28:10Speaker 1: stump us, then you get a free subscription to the
- 28:14Speaker 1: Action Network. Catch a You're Ready Ready Well wide receiver
- 28:18Speaker 1: was most profitable for reception overs in the twenty nineteen
- 28:22Speaker 1: regular season, and this is assuming all bets were made
- 28:26Speaker 1: to win one unit. Matt Mitchell to go over consistently.
- 28:30Speaker 1: It means you have to keep exceeding expectations, which would
- 28:32Speaker 1: tell me that you'd have to have very low expectations
- 28:35Speaker 1: to start the year. So my guest is gonna be
- 28:38Speaker 1: d J. Moore. I'm gonna go with an sec guy
- 28:41Speaker 1: that I loved and Russell Wilson fell in love with
- 28:44Speaker 1: him at the end of the season. I'm worried about
- 28:46Speaker 1: the beginning of the season, but DK Metcalf was starting
- 28:49Speaker 1: to me the tip ball jump ball guys. So I'm
- 28:51Speaker 1: gonna go with DK Metcalf. Yeah, I am not applying
- 28:55Speaker 1: Mitchell's logict, and I'm gonna go with Michael Thomas, Katie
- 28:58Speaker 1: rich Creek. I was gonna go with that all right,
- 29:01Speaker 1: then I am gonna go Keenan Allen. Keenan all ended
- 29:05Speaker 1: up with negative one unit on the season, but the
- 29:08Speaker 1: other guests were all strong. D J. Moore came in third,
- 29:12Speaker 1: getting just under seven units total. Michael Thomas came in
- 29:16Speaker 1: second with seven point three units, the exact number on
- 29:19Speaker 1: DK Metcalf right around even just a little bit above,
- 29:22Speaker 1: but with seven point six units went eleven and three
- 29:26Speaker 1: and two was DeVante Parker from Miami. Wow, does that
- 29:32Speaker 1: mean I effectively win Michael Thomas went twelve and four,
- 29:36Speaker 1: DeVante Parker went eleven and three and two. So if
- 29:39Speaker 1: you want to give yourself a win, that's fine, but
- 29:42Speaker 1: Parker were better throughout this season. Katie's line that my
- 29:45Speaker 1: logic was flawed rules my logic was flawless. More importantly,
- 29:52Speaker 1: Connor wins because he stumped us. Connor, you are the
- 29:56Speaker 1: first winner of an Action Network Edge subscription on the
- 30:00Speaker 1: latest version of The Favorites in which you stumped us
- 30:03Speaker 1: all with your trivia question about betting. Awesome there. We
- 30:07Speaker 1: gotta thank you guys. I think you have a fabulous
- 30:09Speaker 1: career as a lawyer and a better Hey you, that's
- 30:13Speaker 1: the goal. That's the goal, something to aspire to. Connor
- 30:16Speaker 1: Lynch from Kansas City, law student at University of Missouri,
- 30:20Speaker 1: thank you so much for coming on the Favorites. Yea,
- 30:22Speaker 1: thanks for having me Chad before we go as promised,
- 30:25Speaker 1: we have a six figure potential way in writing on
- 30:29Speaker 1: a NASCAR grouper here at the Action Network. A groupers
- 30:32Speaker 1: when all of us go in on the same bet.
- 30:34Speaker 1: P J. Walsh, our NASCAR editor, payned the entire team
- 30:38Speaker 1: about a month and a half ago and said, listen,
- 30:41Speaker 1: I got a bet on NASCAR that we can get
- 30:43Speaker 1: a ton of value on right now, he explained what
- 30:45Speaker 1: he did to us for the bet. I convinced everybody
- 30:48Speaker 1: to make at the Action network. Is Rock Chestaing the
- 30:50Speaker 1: one they take on because I say jump and you
- 30:53Speaker 1: say how high? And all serious though, rock Chesting was
- 30:56Speaker 1: priced as a long stout of two. So I want
- 30:59Speaker 1: to say the Action at works is close to seven
- 31:01Speaker 1: figure liability on this since we all got down with
- 31:03Speaker 1: a good number. Another line is down to one sixty
- 31:06Speaker 1: two one depending upon the book, so we have a
- 31:08Speaker 1: ton of value on it already. The key reason it's
- 31:10Speaker 1: a good bet is because Chastain is actually getting support
- 31:13Speaker 1: from chip can Asty Racing, which, if you don't follow
- 31:15Speaker 1: the sport, is one of the best teams in NASCAR.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So he was priced as a what we call back marker,
- 31:21Speaker 1: but he's actually one of the best rides. And you
