- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We get together with Jim Moore every
- 0:05Tuesday following Yukon weekend games. And coach jmu proved to be what they are.
- 0:12They're a top twenty five team. But the Huskies I thought put them
- 0:16in their place a little bit, certainly early. I love the way the
- 0:19defense was getting all the tackle for losses and coming up their running game,
- 0:24and I mean putting them, I thought, in a position where they were
- 0:27in jeopardy. And I have to believe you had to like what you saw
- 0:31in that first half by your defense. I did. They are a really
- 0:38good football team, Mike. And it was a tough one, you know,
- 0:43because the final score was so ugly, and you go back and you
- 0:46look at that game and it kind of illustrates where we need to improve.
- 0:51And I think, so at thirteen to three and a half, so we're
- 0:57down ten, we're in it. We come out in the second and a
- 1:00half, we get a really good kickoff return, one of our better kickoff
- 1:03returns field position wise all year, and then we fumble on the second play,
- 1:08you know, and that's a moment in time where you have to capture
- 1:12that moment take advantage of that field position and go down and put points on
- 1:17the board instead of we fumble and we go out and get we get a
- 1:19stop and they kick a field goal. So now it's sixteen to three,
- 1:25and now the critical drive happens. We again get pretty good field position,
- 1:29We go I think ten plays sixty two yards, we get a third and
- 1:32five I believe in the red zone, and we bust an assignment on a
- 1:37blitz and we have to settle for another field goal. So now I'll send
- 1:41its sixteen to six. Where had we been able to execute, we have
- 1:45a chance to be at sixteen to ten, and now it's a six point
- 1:49game against the top ranked team on the road, and it's a totally different
- 1:53thing, you know. And then really quite frankly, Mike after that,
- 1:57for some reason, the I know I know the reason, but the wheels
- 2:00fell off, and we need to become as a program, and I need
- 2:08you to understand, everyone listening. I'm never a guy that blames players,
- 2:12and I think you hear that in my comments. It's about us. There's
- 2:15a program. We need to become a program that's mentally tougher and is at
- 2:20our best in those moments where we need to capture the moment and we haven't
- 2:23gotten there yet, and we're on a quest to get there, and that's
- 2:29what's disappointing. But it's also a source of motivation. Yeah, the sense
- 2:34that you bottle them up. And their quarterback Jordan McLeod, who was such
- 2:38a good runner and passer, I mean the first half, every time he
- 2:44touched the ball trying to run with it, the Huskies were all over him.
- 2:46I felt like it's a start. Yeah, you know, game plan
- 2:51wise, you guys were in the right places for a lot of that.
- 2:53I mean first thirty minutes or more. Really, I thought that was a
- 2:58real positive they Yeah, it was, and I appreciate you trying to be
- 3:02positive. It's just that we you know, we don't want to be close.
- 3:08It's good teams. We want to beat good teams. We want to
- 3:10beat every team. And so just for for me, for us, it's
- 3:14so important to recognize, like you are that Yeah, there were some good
- 3:16things early, but the key to being a good team is sustaining that.
- 3:22And that's why I'm talking about capturing those moments where you know they're critical moments
- 3:25in a game. It's you know, it's getting the ball in the end
- 3:30zone to make it sixteen to ten, and then it's coming out and getting
- 3:34the defensive stop instead of giving up a big play for a touchdown on you
- 3:38know, those are the differences, and so we have to develop mental toughness.
- 3:45We have to develop that competitive greatness, and then we've got to go
- 3:47populate this team with guys that that that exhibit that that that have that inherently.
- 3:54And you know that, like I said earlier, that's our quest,
- 3:58that's our that's what we're after, and we're not going to stop and we're
- 4:00not going to rest until we get there. And you know, we have
- 4:04an opportunity because of the portal, and in the portal to me, doesn't
- 4:10mean kicking guys out of here. The portal means we got a chance to
- 4:13replace some guys that are going to graduate, some guys that have given a
- 4:15ton to this program. But we got to go out and we've got to
- 4:17be aggressive in the transfer portal and bring in some established players that can help
- 4:23us immediately, that have that mental toughness, that have that competitive greatness.
- 4:27And we talked about it briefly yesterday or last week, but we're in a
- 4:31very much better position this year entering the portal season than we were last year
- 4:39because we've gotten some very generous people that are behind this program that are willing
- 4:45to adapt to the new world of college football, and so that's going to
- 4:47enable us to go out and be competitive for some impact players that can help
- 4:51us down the line. But I do, Mike, like you, I
- 4:57do see the growth. I do see the positives. It's just really a
- 5:00you know, it's tough to to be excited about that when you're one and
- 5:05nine, but yeah, we see it, we acknowledge it, we we
- 5:09we recognize it. But the goal is to is to win, and we
- 5:13got to we gotta be better in those moments when when it really truly man,
- 5:17it's it's all on the line. Yeah, I'm not listen like I
- 5:21said, I'm talking about all of us have to be better in that situation.
- 5:26I'm not talking about a particular player about me. Shoot, it all
- 5:30starts right here, so uh yeah, that's disappointing this team. We're gonna
- 5:34go quick break here in a moment, though, But the team going into
- 5:39a game like that in the position you're in, you know, with the
- 5:43eight losses, et cetera, and they're unbeaten. They haven't lost in a
- 5:46long time. Just give me an idea of what what you guys were doing
- 5:49in the locker room prior to that. I always wonder when you're up against
- 5:54it like that, what do you get? What do you come up with
- 5:57to get these guys thinking today's the day we're going to knock off these guys.
- 6:01We've got a great group of young men that go into every game thinking
- 6:05that they can win it, and they will win it if they execute and
- 6:08play well and we all do what we're supposed to do. We got an
- 6:12amazing group of young men that come back after a loss and and bounce back
- 6:15and come back with a great attitude and a great work ethic and a great
- 6:18mindset to you know, accept the next challenge. I saw that to.
- 6:25You know, coming off the field today, you just feel it like,
- 6:28Okay, they're back, they're ready for the next challenge. They want to
- 6:31get better. You know, there's no hangdog. Look, there's nobody you
- 6:35know with their dabber down. They're working, they're they're enthusiastic, they want
- 6:42to get better. And you know, as a as a coach, when
- 6:46you're around men like that, man, you know you feel this great responsibility
- 6:51to them, and I do. Yeah. I was gonna say it's an
- 6:55inspiration. It's probably a motivation. Not that you need any motivation, but
- 6:59when you're around guys like that who respond despite what the record says, I
- 7:04mean, that's a positive. I gotta feel that you feel like that too.
- 7:08Well. We're going to continue with that. We're gonna talk about Sacred
- 7:10Heart that's coming up on the weekend, the seniors who will be playing their
- 7:14final home game this weekend. We're going to talk about our usual all of
- 7:18the week that got under my skin maybe yours. Two. This is the
