- 0:00Yeah, thanks, Costo. And a big Friday night of rugby league here in the top end.
- 0:04Now, we usually play on a Saturday evening, but due to Anzac Day falling on
- 0:08the Saturday, games were moved to the Friday.
- 0:11This was round two in the Dabscope Premiership, which is our premier men's grade,
- 0:16and it's a 16 competition.
- 0:18South Darwin Rabbitohs v. the Northern Sharks. Now, these are two teams that
- 0:22missed the finals last season, and both teams are last start winners.
- 0:26And the Sharks got the jump leading 16-4 at the break.
- 0:29The Sharkies went on with it in the second half. The final score,
- 0:33Northern Sharks 36, the South Darwin Rabbitohs 4.
- 0:36Now, the Sharkies, they're 2-0 to start the season.
- 0:39Despite the loss, things are looking up for South Darwin.
- 0:43They have struggled in recent seasons, but they've formed a strong partnership
- 0:46with Gove United, which sees a handful of some pretty talented rugby league
- 0:50players flying in from Gove or Nulamboy, one of our more remote regions of the Northern Territory.
- 0:56In the Darwin Brothers v Nightcliffe Dragons clash, now brothers,
- 1:00they are our two-time defending premiers.
- 1:03Brothers built on last week's win over the Bears, but they didn't have it all their own way.
- 1:09Dragons, they came home strong. In the end, the Dragons were gallant in defeat.
- 1:13The final score, Brothers 24, the Dragons 12.
- 1:17Whilst out at Weber Park, which is the home ground of the Litchfield Bears,
- 1:21which is our big rural regional team, the Bears hosted the Palmerston Raiders,
- 1:25and it's fair to say there is a fair rivalry between these two clubs.
- 1:30The Raiders, they established a 12-6 lead at the breakthrough.
- 1:34Field position and ball possession. Poor discipline from both teams impacted the second half.
- 1:40It certainly could have been described as a very heated game.
- 1:44The Bears snuck home in the end to secure a 14-12 victory.
- 1:48That pleased their home crowd. Now on the Bears, they were last season's minor
- 1:52premiers. They went down in the grand final to brothers.
- 1:55They lost their halves partnership of Wilmington and Wedding at the end of last
- 1:59season, with both players leaving Darwin.
- 2:02But the Bears' new spine of Pomeroy at fullback, young Harry Heath at 5'8",
- 2:06Jacobson at halfback and the captain Drayton at hookup, that combination is
- 2:11developing nicely for the Bears.
- 2:13So after round two, the Northern Sharks and Darwin Brothers,
- 2:17they're both undefeated on four points.
- 2:19The Litchfield Bears and the
- 2:21South Darwin Rabbitohs with one win and one loss, they're on two points.
- 2:25And the Nightcliffe Dragons and the Palmerston Raiders both yet
- 2:29to record a win for 2026 so six
- 2:32teams in the competition it is a final four now
- 2:35over in the true flow services premiership that's our
- 2:38six team women's competition and i have to say the women's game is really going
- 2:43from strength to strength here in the top end recently shari togo she is the
- 2:48coach of the litchfield bears she was part of jess skinner's australian indigenous
- 2:52all-stars coaching team when they took on the Māori All-Stars recently in Waikato.
- 2:57So at Weber Park, Shari Togo's team, the Litchfield Bears, they bounced back
- 3:01from last weekend's loss, establishing a fortress, and they shut down the Raiders'
- 3:06attack to record an impressive.
- 3:0822-12 victory, brothers came up against the resurgent dragons.
- 3:12They definitely put them to the sword.
- 3:14Brothers, the four-time defending premiers, clinical in their 52-12 win.
- 3:19So brothers, or the sisters as they are affectionately known,
- 3:22they're a bit like the Penrith Panthers, winning four premierships on the trot.
- 3:26They are definitely still the team to beat.
- 3:28And the Sharks v Rabideaus clash, the Rabideaus stuck with the Sharks for much of the first half.
- 3:34The Sharks, they broke free in the second half to run out 32
- 3:3716 winners so plenty of positives for both
- 3:40teams to come out of the game now we enter the
- 3:43bye round so no senior rugby league this coming weekend
- 3:46in darwin round three will take place saturday 9th of may and we'll see the
- 3:51palmerston raiders v the nightcliff dragons now in the dabsco premiership these
- 3:55are two teams yet to record a victory for 2026 and both of these teams will
- 4:00expect to play finals footing so expect a big clash here south darwin Rabbitohs,
- 4:06they will come up against the Darwin Brothers.
- 4:08Now, this is last season's Premier's Brothers up against last season's Wooden Spooners South.
- 4:13But given the Gove United partnership with South that I spoke of earlier,
- 4:18and I spoke with a senior player from Gove United during the week,
- 4:22they are expecting a full complement of players to fly in this week.
- 4:26So this game could be much closer than we think.
- 4:29And the Litchfield Bears, they will take on the Northern Sharks,
- 4:32the Bears with their new young spine and probably the fittest team in the competition.
- 4:36They will come up against the Sharks who have really surprised and impressed early in the season.
- 4:41Coach Colley really has them firing on all cylinders. So it should be a great
- 4:45round of Rugby League and Costo.
- 4:47I look forward to giving you a full wrap up next time we speak.
